IT’S GOLDEN

I

was a kid in Alabama when Taylor Swift’s 2006 debut album was released. Her country-meets-pop ingenuity and innocent views of love and love lost won me over, and I’ve been following her career ever since. I followed along as she created art out of heartbreaks, new crushes and lasting romance. I could go on and on about my admiration for Swift’s craft, but I’m sure that’s not why you’re here. Stick with me on this. I’m bringing up Taylor Swift because I’m inspired by her growth into healthier and happier mindsets. In her 2012 single “Red,” she sings about love as this passionate whirlwind, speeding fast and crashing into rubble. The song’s chorus repeats, “loving him was red,” summing up the burning intensity and initial thrills of an unhealthy relationship. Seven years later, Swift released a love-smitten album, “Lover,” featuring the melodic track “Daylight.” The song is riddled with romantic lyrics, but notably, she draws a parallel to her “Red” lyrics with the verse, “I once believed love would be burning red, but it’s golden.” To Swift, love is no longer about fervid yearning and burning emotion. Love is the refreshing and warm feeling of the sun glowing on your skin. It is comforting, temperate and gleaming. So how does this tie into your wedding planning? While researching and preparing for this issue I repeatedly came across wedding planning content saturated with negative language. Many resources emphasized how stressful, expensive and frustrating the wedding planning process is. And that’s not what I believe in. Once, we believed that wedding planning would be burning red. But it’s golden. You’re marrying the love of your life and you’re hosting a celebration that honors the gift of loving and being loved in return. If you go into this chapter preparing for stress and angst, that is what you’ll feel. But when you look at the beauty of your wedding through a golden lens, a new experience materializes. Throughout this issue, we’ve done our best to remove the negative language, while still being realistic and practical. We’ve let Atlanta wedding industry professionals share their expert advice to showcase the reality of wedding planning. Yes, there will be hiccups, but it’s nothing you can’t get past with a solid team on your side. With this attitude in mind, we’ve curated every page of this magazine to help you plan with confidence. From venue guides to vendor viewpoints to wedding fashion inspiration, in these pages, you’ll find a planning blueprint. I sincerely hope this issue leaves you feeling “like daylight” as you embark on this exciting chapter. And if things get rough or stressful, take a step back and step into the sun. It’s time to celebrate your love.

Happy planning and stay golden,

Where to Go

Obtaining a Georgia Marriage License

Marriage licenses are issued by county probate courts, so where you receive your marriage license can depend on residency and ceremony location. Since procedures for applications vary by county, call your county clerk’s office to verify requirements, hours and additional locations. Some counties require an appointment, so be sure to schedule as needed.

FULTON COUNTY

MOONSTONE PHOTOGRAPHY

REQUIREMENTS

WHAT TO PROVIDE

Both parties must be present at the county clerk at the time of application in order to obtain a marriage license.

Both partners must be present at the time of application and will need to bring proof of age, proof of divorce (if applicable) and a method of payment. Accepted documents include: birth certificate, driver’s license, state ID, military ID, resident alien ID or passport.

In Fulton County, the signed marriage license should be returned to the probate court within 30 days of the ceremony. You will then receive your marriage certificate in the mail within 30 days.

WHO MAY APPLY Unmarried people who are at least 18 years of age, of sound mind, and have no living spouse from a prior un-dissolved marriage can apply for a marriage license. If at least one applicant is a resident of Georgia, a marriage license can be issued at a probate court in any county. If neither applicant is a Georgia resident, then you must get your license issued from the county where the ceremony is taking place. Exceptions: • If you are 17 years of age when applying for a marriage license, you must show that you have been emancipated for no less than 15 days and present a certificate of completion of separate specialized premarital counseling for each applicant, even if one applicant is over 18.

COST A marriage license fee differs depending on the county and ranges from $16-$76. Each county offers a discount for completing a premarital education course. Check with your local probate court for restrictions on payment. For Fulton County, marriage licenses are $56 (cash/credit/debit) or $16 if you provide to the court a Certificate of Completion for a Qualified Premarital Education Program. This premarital education must be completed within 12 months prior to the application of the marriage license and the couple must undergo the education together.

WAITING PERIOD/ EXPIRATION OF LICENSE Georgia doesn’t have a waiting period before the license can be used. In some counties the license doesn’t expire, but in others, the license expires after six months. Also, verify how many days you have to return the license for filing.

Looking to get married somewhere other than Georgia? Visit atlantastyleweddings.com/planning-tools to learn about marriage license laws in other areas of the Southeast.

Wedding Budget Breakdown There are so many options when it comes to allocating your money. Start the process by nailing down a total budget. Once that is set, you can break down the entire budget using this helpful guide. Based on national averages, this guide will give you a good starting point to know what amount you should be willing to spend for each vendor. Of course, this is a fluid guide. If you are set on splurging for your dream wedding dress, accounting for 30% of your wedding budget, go for it! Just be sure to adjust the other items accordingly.

Tipping Etiquette Guide Once you’ve established your budget and allocated it accordingly, you’re all done thinking about finances, right? Wrong! Enter the taboo world of tipping. No one wants to intentionally stiff someone, but how do you know what is standard? Let’s break it down. To start off, aside from contracts that include it, tipping is not required for most vendors. However, when a vendor goes above and beyond for you, tipping is greatly appreciated! Typically, it is not standard practice to tip the owner of the service provided. However, many vendors — such as catering — have waitstaff that deserve special thanks. Sometimes, gratuity is included in your invoice, so be sure to check and don’t assume it is or isn’t. Some vendors include total gratuity for their staff in the fee, so don’t hesitate to doublecheck. Pro Tip: To avoid forgetting during the whirlwind of your big day, prepare your tips beforehand. Head to the bank for some cash and create tip envelopes, labeled for each vendor. You can assign one of your attendants or family members the task of distributing the tips on the wedding day.

FINDING

“The

FIND THE PERFECT WEDDING LOOK WITH THESE SHOPPING TIPS FROM SĀKRED BRIDAL

One” F

WRITTEN BY Kelly Joslyn, Owner of Sākred Bridal PHOTOGRAPHY BY Tags Photography

inding “the dress” is on the to-do list of most brides. But it can certainly be one of the more daunting (and sometimes stressful) tasks to check off. However, with proper planning, it can be one of the most enjoyable, memory-making moments unto itself. Let’s dive into a few ways in which you can make the most of your dress shopping day.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

There is a proper time and place for “dropping in,” but wedding gown shopping is not one of those. Nearly all reputable bridal salons require an appointment — usually with 24 hours or more notice and many times with a preappointment questionnaire. This is for your benefit. You should have a stylist that is knowledgeable of your wedding details and is planning to spend one to two hours of undivided attention to make the most of your time.

BRING PROPER UNDERGARMENTS

Think about what you would plan to wear on your wedding day. If you think Spanx or other shapewear will be in your garment bag, then bring them along to your appointment. Regardless of size, many crepe or fitted gowns look best with shapewear or a thong for a more seamless appearance. If a ballgown is more your style, then your regular undies should be just fine — just make sure they are neutral in color and closest to your skin tone. It’s not the day to sport your red polka dot bikinis as they will show through most gown fabrics. Finally, strapless bras are not needed for bridal appointments. Most well-constructed gowns have built-in support with corseting or cups and are made to be worn without a bra.

INVITE THE RIGHT AUDIENCE

Brides by nature are a little nervous, excited or sometimes both when starting their gown search. Strong personalities and opinions can affect the overall mood of the appointment. Think specifically about the opinions you value most and keep your circle small. For example, if you can’t imagine saying yes to a dress without your mom present, then don’t shop until she can be with you. “Just looking” could end up being THE dress and she missed that authentic moment. For those you feel compelled to involve, but have reservations about, invite them to your gown pick-up appointment. A gown reveal is much more direct, but just as special, and the pressure of a decision is a thing of the past. And finally, it never hurts to have a pre-appointment pep talk with your entourage. Let them know you love them and value their opinion, but would appreciate it if the first reaction to any gown comes from you.

GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO SAY “YES”

Your gown should feel authentically “you.” No one can define what that is but you. A gown can check every

box on your musthave list, but if you don’t love it, then it’s not the dress — move on. The next gown could be completely different than anything you thought you wanted, but she evokes an emotion within you — if you relate to her like your favorite pair of jeans … then honey, you’ve just found your gown. Whether it is the first gown you try on or the 50th, giving yourself permission to say yes is key. When you find a gown that you just don’t want to take off, she’s your girl! And don’t let future bridal salon appointments you have scheduled deter you. Bridal shops would much rather you call to inform them that you’ve found your gown and cancel an appointment than to spend an appointment helping you search for a gown you’ve already found elsewhere. That’s a valuable time slot that could be given to a bride still searching or on a waiting list.

WHEN YOU DO SAY “YES” … DELETE THE PINTEREST BOARD!

“FOMO” has no place in the bridal world. There are millions of gowns out there and there are all sorts of shapes and sizes and personalities to match them. Going on an elusive search, store after store, to try them all is exhausting, confusing and, quite

frankly, impossible. When you met your fiancé, you stopped looking for someone else. Take the same approach with your dress.

RELAX AND ENJOY!

Your gown will be a direct reflection of who you are. When you meet her, you’ll know her. The End. ■

To A Summer’s Day

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Designed by Caitlin & Co. Events, the eye of heaven shone on The Wildflower 301’s natural landscape. Incorporating architectural details of the venue, the vendor team unveiled an intimate elopement in shades of periwinkle, lilac and powder blue. Drenched in summer sun, chilled beverages were essential. To charmingly quench thirsts, Fizzy Beverage Cart served beverages from their 1986 Piaggio Vespacar cart. Such vintage details created an enchanting and timeless celebration of love.

Golden Hour

With Iron Horse’s picturesque acreage, the sun set on this summer afternoon and welcomed in an autumnal dusk. A fall color palette awakened the country fields. Coordinated by Rachel Bentley of Bentley Wedding Planning, the team channeled the charm of traditional southern farm venues, but with an elegant, modern touch. Lush, warm-toned blooms by Flourish Floral Design packed a dynamic punch against the natural setting. The allure of toasted brown sugar, crackling dry leaves and cinnamon spice scents created this inspiration, elevating a standard countryside wedding scene into a charming affair.

Reminiscent of the French countryside, Walnut Hill Farm’s open terrain set the stage for this ethereal wedding retreat. This design reflects a tailored, southern elegance with an appreciation for ornate, heirloom decoration. The color palette of honey yellow, sage green, muted coral and terracotta clay was complemented by traditional touches like blue and white porcelain, cane-back chairs and crystal candelabras. Complete with a pastel cake, fragrant florals and textured tablescapes, this styled setting evokes delight from all the senses.

IN LIEU OF GIFTS

We’ve seen traditional gift registries decline in popularity. If looking for an alternative to gifts, ask your guests to donate to a charity or cause that means a lot to you.

COLLEGE SPIRIT

AUTHENTIC COLLECTIVE

Your wedding day is a complete reflection of you and your partner. You put everything you love into this day. From including your best friends as your wedding attendants to crafting a menu of favorite dishes to marrying your favorite person in the world, your wedding is all about what you love most. So why not tie your ideals and values in as well?

CEREMONY READINGS

The ceremony itself is the most integral part of a wedding. It sets the scene for your marriage and reminds you, your partner and your guests what the basis of your marriage will be built on. In the whirlwind of planning, the ceremony can get overlooked. So don’t forget to really lean into your ideals and passions with special readings, such as scripture passages from your faith’s holy text, poems or lyrics that spell out your most important ideals.

48

INSPIRATION & DETAILS

It’s no secret that college pride runs deep in the South. Honor your alma mater with touches like novelty desserts, a school spirit color palette, specialty cocktails or accessories (we’re talking socks, cufflinks and pocket squares). If you attended school nearby, you can even host your celebrations on campus — many colleges have event centers or chapels available for your celebrations.

VOLUNTEERING AS A BACHELOR/ BACHELORETTE PARTY

We’ve been loving alternative bachelor/bachelorette parties lately. Invite your best pals to join in on a day of volunteering for something that’s important to you. Help out at an animal shelter or food bank, run a charity race together or spend a day at a nursing home. Whatever cause tugs at your heartstrings, celebrate your love by sharing love!

Whether you have children already, younger siblings or are a blended family, including the kids most special to you in your wedding day is important. While a full wedding day might not be thrilling to a little one, use these options to make sure all your guests — no matter their age — feel welcomed and ready to celebrate.

CEREMONY ROLES

Depending on the child’s personality and outgoingness, inviting them to speak in the ceremony is a fun touch. This can be as complex as having them prepare a speech or simply having them read a poem or scripture. And of course, we can’t forget the crucial role of being a flower girl or ring bearer!

CUPCAKES

Traditionally, it is common for weddings to have a dedicated cake for both spouses. Feel free to keep the two cakes, but also have a kids’ cake — or even cupcakes! Any excuse to have a funfetti cake and some sprinkles, right?

ENTERTAINMENT

Let’s be honest, weddings might be arduous to some kids! Give the day some extra fun by offering games and activities. This can include weddingthemed coloring pages and word

searches, an I-Spy Bingo board, kid-friendly snack packs or backyard games.

CAKE TASTING

This might be the kids’ favorite part of the whole wedding process! Inviting them to your cake tasting will let them know they are involved in the wedding and that their opinions are valued in this marriage.

DECORATORS

What could be sweeter than crayonillustrated table name cards? If your wedding has a more relaxed air to it, don’t be afraid to let your children join in on the decorating. This could mean giving them the task of sprinkling flower petals/confetti throughout or allowing them to get creative in outfitting the photo booth. Kids are great at thinking outside of the box, so you might as well tap into that creativity!

Is your pet just as important to you as your significant other? For many couples, incorporating their furry friends into their wedding is a must. While they might not make the invite list, they certainly deserve to be represented in the festivities one way or the other.

CUSTOM COOKIES

What is cuter than a portrait of your pet on a deliciously designed cookie? Include these sweet treats in your guests’ welcome bags, at the reception dessert table or as a departing gift.

SPECIALTY COCKTAIL NAME

Dedicate a cocktail or two to your pet by including them on the bar menu. Go simple with a name like “The Fido” or get creative with a play on words.

RARE LOVE STORIES

INVITE THEM FOR THE PHOTOS

Maybe having your pet in attendance for the whole wedding isn’t the right fit. But an option is to coordinate with your pet sitter to bring the pet to your wedding during your scheduled photo time. Having your pet in some of your wedding photos will be a priceless keepsake!

“DOGGIE BAG”

As guests leave the wedding, invite them to take a “doggie bag” of cat or dog treats with them — a gift from your pet to theirs.

PHOTO BOOTH PROPS

Whiskers might not be in attendance, but his/her presence will be known! Create photo booth props of your pets so that they get to be in your guests’ photos and very much a part of the big day. ■

hen planning their wedding, many couples start with selecting and securing their venue. After all, your venue will ultimately influence the mood, logistics, and design choices for your celebration. From the rehearsal dinner to the ceremony to the reception, there are a lot of options for what your wedding landscape will be. Keep things simple and streamlined by planning all your festivities in one spot or treat your guests to several locations. Whatever you choose as your venue(s), take into account the aesthetics and overall vision, but also think about these important aspects: • Location — How easily will guests be able to arrive and exit your venue? Is the venue located near hotels? Do you want something within the city or in the suburbs? How far are you willing to travel? • Cost — Will you have to move around other items in your budget to accommodate for a certain venue? Does your desired wedding date have a higher peak-season rate? • Amenities & Decor — How much will you be provided by the venue and how much will you need to bring in? How many restrooms are there and what are they like? Is it handicap accessible? Is there a catering kitchen? • Size — What is the maximum capacity? Will the venue be too large or too small for your guest list? • Preferred Vendors — Does the venue have a list of preferred vendors that you’re limited to? • Privacy — How private or public will the venue be? Is there a risk of strangers and passersby stumbling into it? What is security like?

HOTEL OR RESORT

Wedding logistics are a breeze when you book a hotel wedding. Hosting your wedding at a hotel or resort is a great option if you anticipate a lot of out-of-town guests. On-site accommodations ease the need for wedding-day transportation, and it helps keep everyone in a central locale. Plus, there’s an added layer of guest safety, as no one will need to find a sober driver at the end of the night — they can just go up the elevator to their room! Many hotels and resorts offer a variety of celebration locations, from their hotel restaurant as the rehearsal dinner venue to a ballroom for the ceremony to a hospitality suite for getting ready the day of. The value of all the amenities a hotel provides is hard to overlook. Right: Hotel Colee

GARDEN

Gardens are charming and undeniably beautiful venues for a spring or summer wedding (perhaps a conservatory or green house in the winter!). Let nature guide your décor, allowing the expert landscaping to lead the way with ample greenery and blossoms. The depth and texture of garden venues allow you to be transported to a full sensory experience.

EVENT HALL

Event halls are dedicated to events and offer a turn-key location that is a blank slate for you to build on. The purpose of these venues is to host events like weddings or conferences, so you can be confident that they have every detail accounted for. Most event halls have an in-house team dedicated to making your wedding great. This can include in-house catering, planners, designers and event staff. Another benefit comes with the assets. Event halls typically are equipped with a range of necessary wedding essentials, including sound systems, furniture and basic decor. Left: The Carlyle. Photography by The Tinsley Co.

CELEBRATION LOCATIONS

PRIVATE RESIDENCE

Private residences have added sentimental value that a standard venue can’t replicate. They offer an entirely private and intimate experience, as the venue is not publicly accessible. However, they can come with hiccups, like not being equipped for events and not having staff dedicated to making everything run smoothly. While this type of venue might not cost anything for you to book (in the case that it is a residence of a family member or friend), it might not necessarily save you money. In the end, you’ll likely need to bring in external coordinators, staff, set-up crews and more to ensure the venue operates as cohesively as a dedicated event venue would. But you can’t beat the emotional value of getting married in grandma’s garden or your childhood home! Left: Private Residence in Cartersville. Photography by Madeline Jane Photography

MUSEUM

While your wedding will be the star of the show, a museum venue adds a layer of entertainment and culture to your festivities. Guests can meander through the museum’s exhibits and immerse themselves in a unique and textured experience. Thought-provoking and conversation-starting, museums are good options for when you have a lot of guests from different social circles. What better way to break the ice! When your love story is a piece of art itself, a museum is a great backdrop setting for your celebration. Right: High Museum of Art. Photography by Sarah Vitel Photography

COUNTRY CLUB

Views and greens abound! Country clubs and golf courses lend themselves to some stunning panoramic photo opportunities and event backdrops, something you can’t replicate in the city. Besides the aesthetic appeal of country clubs and golf courses, these venues come with white-glove service, multiple rooms available and experienced staff and catering. Many country clubs offer events to their members only, so be sure to check before you get your heart set on one. However, this does add an extra layer of privacy and security into your special day. BREWERY OR DISTILLERY

Gilded halls and china place settings aren’t for everyone. Some couples feel more comfortable celebrating among wooden kegs and saying “cheers!” with pint glasses. A brewery or distillery wedding can feel industrial, relaxed and true to the couple. Many breweries have on-site kitchens available, which makes for some ideal food and drink pairings. If there are no kitchen or catering options, bring in some local food trucks to set up in the parking lot. Above: Elsewhere Brewing. Photography by Dessa Lohrey

WINERY

HISTORIC ESTATE OR SITE

Character abounds with a historic site or estate as a venue. By leaning into the splendor of the past, you can ease up on decor rentals and let the space speak for itself. These venues typically have sweeping gardens, breathtaking architecture and the irreplaceable richness of history. If you’re looking for a venue that is timeless and welcoming, a historic estate might be up your alley. Due to the quaint charm of the past, these venues can lack modern amenities like ample restrooms or grounded power outlets, so keep that in mind! Above: Swan House at Atlanta History Center. 58

CELEBRATION LOCATIONS

Like the idea of hosting your wedding at a distillery, but want something a touch more formal than a beer hall? Try a winery! While we are not in Napa Valley, our region does have several beautiful vineyard estates. As the wine ages in caskets around you, your love will be one that grows better with age too. Below: Montaluce Winery & Restaurant. Photography by Kim Hymes Photography

WATERFRONT

Romanticism and serenity come with the territory of a waterfront wedding. No matter how high your wedding-day nerves might be, ultimate relaxation comes with getting married to the sounds of trickling water or crashing waves. A waterfront wedding can take place in a variety of places, like on a yacht or private charter, on a beach, at a marina or at a dock. There are so many options in the Southeast. Opt for something on Tybee Island or plan a mini-destination wedding to Florida. Left: The Westin Savannah Harbor. Photography by Izzy + Co.

URBAN LOFT / WAREHOUSE

For some texture, exposed brick and high ceilings, urban lofts or warehouses are great options. A non-traditional, urban loft is the versatile and industrial take on a classic barn wedding. For city-dwellers, the urban loft or warehouse route adds an undeniable city flair. Plus, these venues are often centrally located, which is also great for out-of-town guests. With past lives as train depots or industrial stock houses, urban loft or warehouse venues have tenacity and a rich history perfect for starting your future. Right: Burrow Warehouse.

RESTAURANT

By picking a restaurant, café or bar with aesthetics you enjoy, you will have built-in décor! Save for any personalized details you want to decorate with, a stylish eatery comes with the restaurant’s existing décor as well as tabletop needs like silverware and plating. And of course, you know the food and drink will be spectacular. Typically, a restaurant wedding will require a smaller guest list due to venue capacity. If you want an intimate wedding that doesn’t feel empty, a venue like this is perfect. Certain restaurants or bars have private rooms available for rent, while others offer the possibility to buy-out the entire venue, so there’s still room for a wide headcount range.

Photography by Ivory + Grace Photography

BARN

A bonus: you now have an automatic anniversary date night planned for years to come. What’s more special than celebrating in the very spot you tied the knot?

Rustic charm and serenity come easily at a barn or farmhouse. Barns offer up a lot of space, so these are ideal for large weddings, especially if you intend on having both indoor and outdoor festivities. The outdoor grounds give space for elements like a fire pit, yard games and maybe even some barn animal cameos. And don’t feel boxed-in by the given rustic aesthetic; these venues are versatile and can be dressed up to create an engaging juxtaposition of glamor and homespun charm. For a breath of fresh air and a step away from the hustle of city life, a barn or farmhouse is a lovely choice for a blissful wedding. ■

Room HOTEL BLOCK BOOKING TIPS WITH JACQUELINE VIZCAÍNO OF TINTED EVENT DESIGN, PRODUCTION AND PLANNING PHOTOGRAPHY BY Tags Photography

W

hether you have guests traveling from out of town or you opt for a destination wedding, your loved ones will need a place to stay. And not just any place, you want their accommodations to be comfortable, easy and able to set the overall tone for the weekend ahead. One great way to ensure comfort and ease is to secure a hotel block. It’s likely that you don’t have past experience in booking hotel blocks though. What is it? Why should you do it? How do you do it? We asked Jacqueline Vizcaíno, founder and lead visionary of Tinted Event Design, Production and Planning, to share her expertise on all things hotel blocks. As a well-versed Atlanta event planner, Vizcaíno knows how important

62

CELEBRATION LOCATIONS

it is to have such details ironed out so that you are set up for success.

WHAT IS A HOTEL BLOCK?

Before we get into the benefits, let’s start by defining what a hotel room block is. A hotel room block is a grouping of hotel rooms set aside for a specific event. By securing a room block, you also secure a group rate for your attendees and, oftentimes, other special perks. Some hotels throw in a complimentary room for the couple, access to a hospitality suite, welcome bag distribution at the front desk and flexible check-in/check-out times.

By reserving hotel room blocks, you can ease transportation woes, streamline timelines and provide a luxurious experience for your guests. In a weekend full of detailed coordination, you want to work smarter, not harder. A room block can make things trouble-free for you and your wedding planner. You can easily coordinate transportation and activities by having all of your guests in one place. Trust us, your wedding planner will thank you for making their job easier!

TRANSPORTATION

Rideshare services can be spotty, and cabs can be expensive. Having a room block at a hotel near the wedding venue and/or reception venue allows for guests to carpool or you can take advantage of a trolley, shuttle or other stylish event transportation methods. Having a singular pick-up and dropoff location for your guests will also help keep your aunt from texting you “Where am I supposed to be?” When everyone is in the same spot, these questions answer themselves.

THE HOTEL THANKS YOU

Not only is a hotel block convenient for guests and the planner, but it also is beneficial to the hotel to be able to plan ahead and make accommodations for your party. Knowing that a whole group of hotel guests are attending the same wedding festivities, the hotel staff will ensure all needs are met. In contrast to just suggesting your guests stay at a certain hotel, official group bookings enable the hotel to properly prepare and ensure your guests have a room.

REST AND RELAXATION

Perhaps most importantly, a hotel room block can give your guests a place to relax and unwind after a long weekend of celebrating. Yes, your wedding is for you and every detail is something you’ve carefully curated. But a wedding is also

for your guests, and you want them to have a stress-free weekend so that they can properly celebrate with you. By having a room block, you can give your guests a place to stay where they can relax and recharge before heading home. Plus, it’s a great way to keep the party going after the reception or even into a brunch the next morning. ■

Top Three

Superb service is the hallmark of Atlanta. So when booking a hotel room block for your wedding, you want to ensure you have all the information you need to make the best decision for you and your guests. Here are our top three tips for booking a hotel room block:

1

MAKE A LIST OF YOUR MUST-HAVES What amenities are important to you and your guests? Make sure the hotel you book can provide them.

2

JACQUELINE VIZCAÍNO TINTED EVENT DESIGN, PRODUCTION AND PLANNING

DO YOUR RESEARCH Not all hotels are created equal. When looking for a hotel to book your room block in, read reviews and compare rates. You’ll want to find an affordable hotel with a reputation for providing excellent service.

3

START EARLY The earlier you look for a hotel room block, the better. This will give you more time to compare prices and find the best deal. With so much happening in Atlanta — sports, concerts, conventions, social and charitable events — room blocks fill up fast! Having your hotel block booked before you send out save-the-dates is helpful, as your guests can begin to plan their travel arrangements ASAP.

PARTIES, PARTIES, PARTIES!

The ceremony and reception get a lot of attention — as they should! But there are a lot of other events surrounding a wedding. For a full celebration, pre- and post-wedding parties are not to be overlooked. Here are some options to get the soirées started … and to keep them going. You certainly don’t need to take part in all of these, just do whatever fits you, your relationship and your culture best!

Bridal Shower or Couple’s Shower The bridal shower is a daytime party hosted by friends and non-immediate family. No planning by the nearlywed needed! This event is often a ladies-only festivity in the form of a luncheon, tea party or light hors d’oeuvres social. A shower is a great opportunity to embrace a theme and light-hearted games that you might love, but not want to incorporate into the wedding itself. Traditionally, this is an occasion to celebrate the bride herself, but as our culture shifts, it’s not uncommon to see these being replaced with couples’ showers, a joint event celebrating both partners. WHEN: One to two months before the wedding

Bachelor Party and Bachelorette Party Your wedding is all about your relationship with your future spouse. But the bachelor/ bachelorette party allows some time to just celebrate you as an individual. For the rest of your life, you will be joined with your partner, but this is a party for you. This celebration involves yourself and your closest friends in one final revelry of being single (legally speaking). This celebration can be anywhere from one fun night out on the town all the way to a multi-day destination adventure. The quintessential bachelor/bachelorette party involves a same-sex guest list, but some couples — especially ones with a blended friend group — may prefer to have a joint party, which can be just as fun! So don’t be afraid of this alternative option. WHEN: Six to eight weeks prior to the wedding

Welcome Party For couples anticipating a lot of out-of-town guests, the welcome party is a great way to usher in your big weekend. This event can be anywhere from a bar buyout cocktail party to a casual backyard cook-out, whatever gets your guests together to break the ice amongst each other and set the scene for fun. Your wedding day will be busy, so this is the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with guests. ASHLEE C PHOTOGRAPHY

WHEN: One or two nights before the wedding

Rehearsal Dinner The rehearsal dinner is the last official celebration before the wedding itself! As the name implies, this dinner occurs after the ceremony rehearsal. Usually, the rehearsal dinner is for immediate family and the wedding party (or anyone who is involved in the ceremony itself), but invitations can also be extended to out-of-town guests. The rehearsal dinner is often hosted by the groom’s parents, although it is just as frequently hosted by the couple themselves. Locations for rehearsal dinners vary, but private rooms at restaurants or private residences are top options.

WHEN: The night before the wedding

Sangeet

Aufruf

A Sangeet is a colorful Indian pre-wedding tradition in which family joins to sing, dance, eat and celebrate the upcoming festivities. Compared to Western tradition, a sangeet is similar to a rehearsal dinner, but even more vibrant and lively. This celebration is centered around music and involves choreographed dances, ornate attire and free-form dancing, all centered around wishing the best for the couple.

An Aufruf is a Jewish ceremony hosted at a synagogue on the Saturday before the wedding. Aufruf translates to “calling up” in Yiddish, and the customary ceremony tradition involves just the groom, but more liberal synagogues have expanded to include both partners. The ceremony calls for the groom (or the couple) to recite a blessing followed by the congregation showering him (or both partners) with candies as a symbol of sweetness and fruitfulness.

WHEN: The day before the wedding

WHEN: Saturday before the wedding

After Party Depending on your reception venue’s hours or noise restrictions, your party might have to close down before you’re done celebrating. To keep the party going, many couples have an after-party held at a hotel room, nearby bar or a friend’s house. Your parents and grandparents can head back to get some rest while you and your close friends continue on into the night with loosened ties and kickedoff shoes. TAGS PHOTOGRAPHY

WHEN: After the reception ends

Day-After Brunch You’re recovering from a long weekend with a packed timeline; the day-after brunch offers a relaxed closing to it all. An informal buffet-style brunch works great for this, as guests can come and go as they please. Depending on how the night ended, this allows guests to say their goodbyes and not feel rushed. Plus, who doesn’t love some coffee and pastries among loved ones? WHEN: Morning after the wedding ■

Reasons to get Married in

Savannah

CELEBRATION LOCATIONS

IT’S EASY TO SEE HOW SAVANNAH EARNED ITS NICKNAME “THE HOSTESS CITY OF THE SOUTH.” BEDECKED IN HISTORIC CHARM, OCEAN BREEZES AND SPANISH MOSS, SAVANNAH SHOULD BE ON YOUR WEDDING DESTINATION RADAR.

1 BEAUTY

I

s this the day you’ve been waiting for? Perhaps it’s the day you never knew you wanted until the right person came along. Maybe it’s another chance to get it right. Your wedding day is the opening act to the true headliner — a blissful marriage. Where you choose to get married could determine where you celebrate anniversaries and milestones, start a family, relocate or even retire. It may seem unlikely for a location to leave a lasting impression after the event, but Savannah is not like most. The task of listing all the reasons why Savannah should be on every wedding bucket list would prove impossible. But we’ll give it a go. Here are eight reasons to consider hosting your wedding in Savannah.

Savannah doesn’t miss in the looks department. Millions of visitors travel here annually to admire the city’s beauty, laced with history and unexplainable allure. Azaleas elegantly return in the spring, sending a colorful welcome throughout downtown. Rows of Victorian homes dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries line every street corner, as historic gardens and courtyards have been intricately preserved to fit the home’s period. Massive oak trees are home to Spanish moss suspended precariously as you walk through 22 lush green squares. This architectural precision and beauty has withstood over 300 years. Without a doubt, Savannah is a live, illustrative scene for exchanging vows.

2 HISTORY

General James Oglethorpe couldn’t have predicted the tremendous impact that Savannah would have on the world when he founded the first city of Georgia in 1733. Savannah is

drenched with historic cobblestone streets, buildings, gardens and homes that never go out of style. Allow your wedding day to be a part of nearly 300 years of Southern record.

3 VENUES

Weddings are much like luxury real estate — location, location, location. Where you choose to begin your forever starts with the proper venue, and Savannah is the perfect host. Your wedding day isn’t only about you; it’s a day to tell your family and friends that you’ve found your someone, and the celebration wouldn’t be complete without them. You and your guests will feel like royalty in historic residences like the Andrew Low House and Davenport House. These 19th-century mansions are beautifully maintained with gorgeous courtyards and gardens purposely suited for indoor or outdoor weddings. Or let nature’s lifetime experience as a wedding designer prove worthy,

as you exchange vows in picturesque Forsyth Park or one of the other 22 park squares. If waterways are your favored piece of nature, set sail with your crew on the Georgia Queen for a riverboat cruise wedding. For a luxurious and contemporary feel, stunning views of historic downtown and River Street are guaranteed with Perry Lane Hotel and Thompson Savannah. Perry Lane Hotel is located in the heart of the city with an eclectic mix of

traditional and modern decor. This artsy accommodation has three on-site restaurants (including the Peregrin rooftop bar) that deliver a proper introduction to Savannah’s skyline. Further down the river, the Thompson Savannah is a part of the city’s Eastern Wharf District, an architectural nod to the history of the Savannah River and its unwavering relationship with the city. A mid-century chic essence flows throughout the entirety of this 193-room accommodation, featuring two on-site restaurants and two bars. Bar Julian is an incredible rooftop bar with unparalleled views of the city on one side and the Savannah River on the other. Recognized as the tallest roof in the city, you and your guests will feel like you’re on top of the world.

4 SAVANNAH’S BEACH

When the Atlantic Ocean calls, you must answer. Tybee Island is a warm and welcoming community of fewer than 3,000 people, just 30 minutes from Savannah. In an old-school beach town environment, this island is home to five beautiful beaches. Nicholas Sparks readers will pinch themselves while exchanging vows at the Tybee Island Wedding Chapel, featured in “The Last Song” movie. On Tybee Island, you can say “I do,” celebrate and honeymoon all in one place as you walk through white, sandy beaches towards your one-and-only with the ocean playing your song.

5 WEATHER

Your spring date fell through. Your great-grandmother can’t attend during the summer heat. The venue you wanted wasn’t available for the fall. Winter weddings are just too cold. Fear not; Savannah is the superhero in this story. It’s one of the only coastal locations where the wedding season is

year-round. The climate dial is always set at “chill,” providing a relaxing and laid-back atmosphere requiring only light layers during the short three months of winter. No matter the unique circumstance, preferences or date changes, Savannah is the ultimate avenger.

6 DINING

To say that Savannah restaurateurs are whizzes in the kitchen is an understatement. Savannah’s dining scene is a delicious, well-rounded blend of Southern cuisine infused with multicultural layers. It’s not unusual to dine in historic mansions such as The Olde Pink House, Elizabeth on 37th or 700 Drayton Restaurant. For the real foodies out there, the former 1938 Greyhound Bus Terminal is home to James Beard award-winners at the famous The Grey Restaurant. Whether your rehearsal or wedding menu calls for soul food, burgers and fries, fresh seafood, Asian fusion, Parisian, Greek or Mediterranean, this city is a melting pot of cuisines to cater to your wedding day palettes.

7 ENTERTAINMENT

Make your last night as a single memorable with entertainment you won’t find anywhere else. Savannah has several fun excursions for groups to accommodate both bachelor and bachelorette parties that will all involve live entertainment and libations galore. “Don’t Stop Believin’’’ in your karaoke dreams at McDonough’s Restaurant & Lounge. Savannah Smiles Dueling Pianos will have you swaying throughout the night to the audience’s music of choice, while Savannah Slow Ride gives you a chance to have a few drinks and put your feet to work as you pedal through the city with your friends to your favorite soundtracks.

8 HOSPITALITY

Don’t expect to have to lift a finger when planning your nuptials in Savannah. Don’t worry, everything is under control because the city’s experts are here to help. Your wedding day is assured to be a day of indescribable joy. That’s just the Savannah way, y’all. ■

CUSTOM WEDDING PLANNER AND DAY-OF COORDINATOR, GLORIA SCHULZ SHARES FOUR TENETS IN HER APPROACH TO WEDDING PLANNING WRITTEN BY Gloria Schulz, Gloria Schulz Events PHOTOGRAPHY BY Glorianna Chan, Glorious Moments Photography

I

f you opted for a diamond for your engagement ring gem, you probably are familiar with the 4Cs of diamond shopping. The concept of the 4Cs was created in the 1940s by Robert M. Shipley, the founder of GIA, as a way to characterize a faceted diamond. These four tenets being: color, clarity, cut and carat weight. This amalgamation of the four characteristics then determines the overall quality, and therefore price, of a faceted diamond. I’ve developed a similar 4C methodology to consult when planning your wedding. It doesn’t gauge overall value and isn’t universal across the globe, but it can help serve as a guide on how to approach your wedding planning. Likely, you haven’t planned a wedding before, so let this framework give you a starting point for how to approach your wedding decision making. So without further adieu, I present to you my 4Cs to consider when wedding planning.

C is for The first wedding planning “C” is Choices. From the very start, you will be making choices, and some of them will be difficult! Once the word is out about your engagement, people will be congratulating you and asking you a million questions. “What’s the date?” “Where’s the wedding?” “Who’s going to be in your wedding party?” “What are you going to wear?” “Am I invited?” It can be a little overwhelming as you make the choices that will determine the answers to such questions. And on top of all that, you may not even know what choices you will have to make. Each vendor, venue and wedding come with choices to be made, some of which you might not have ever considered, so don’t be afraid to ask. Especially when it comes to your vendor contracts! There may be some industry lingo in there that you don’t understand, and that is OK. When in doubt, always ask; no question is too silly. Believe me, we’ve heard it all!

C is for Next up, the ever-tumultuous Compromise. This one goes hand-inhand with the previous “C,” Choices. There’s the age-old adage that a happy marriage is all about compromise — and a happy wedding is no different. Obviously, this is a very nuanced discussion, sometimes compromise is great, sometimes it isn’t and ultimately you should do what feels right. All that being said, when it comes to the choices you make while wedding planning, you will likely have to settle on some compromises. Are there dream floral centerpieces you’ve seen on Instagram that are simply out of your budget? A good compromise is to design your bouquet inspired by

102

BUILD YOUR VENDOR TEAM

them, rather than having multiple huge installations. Or maybe your mother has always dreamed of you walking down the aisle in the family heirloom gown, but a modern and sleek dress is what you’ve had your eyes on. Compromise by wearing one look for the ceremony and having another look for your reception. The list of examples goes on, but the lesson here is that choices will be made, and many of them will be compromises. Head into your planning process with an open mind and be prepared to think outside the box for alternatives that are just as dreamy. A good wedding planner will be more than happy to pitch in with solutions, as well!

C is for Now for the fun part, the third “C” is Creativity. Be creative when thinking about your overall wedding day vision, there are no rules that dictate what you have to do! Getting creative with how you will execute your wedding day will likely be the part of the process you enjoy most. Part of that comes with establishing the little details that will personalize your wedding day. As a couple, you have many things in common, and you can highlight that in the little details. Maybe you have a special pet or you both love the movies or a certain type of music. You can incorporate these little details to make your wedding unique. Some of my favorite ideas are cocktail napkins with your fur babies’ photo on them, a guestbook that is your favorite bottle of wine or a coffee table book of the place you love the most. In one of my recent weddings, the bride made a personalized crossword puzzle for her guests to work on, filled with questions about the couple. This made for great cocktail hour entertainment and I’ll definitely be recommending this touch to my couples moving forward! Be creative and think outside the box — I guarantee your guests will love these special touches.

More To

Keep In Mind Keep the wedding planning easy and simple with the 4C method in mind. And with that framework in mind, I offer you three further suggestions on how to approach the planning process:

1

HIRE A PROFESSIONAL WEDDING PLANNER You may love to plan and consider yourself a planner-type, and that’s great! But you probably already have a full-time job and wedding planning takes up a lot of time. Hiring a professional will save you time and money, and will also open you up to a world of contacts with some of the best vendors in the industry. Unless you want to spend your weekends scrolling through vendor websites and reviews, let the planner take this item off your to-do list.

2

DON’T TRY TO PLEASE EVERYONE This is your wedding. Not your mom’s or your sister’s. Yes, you want everyone to enjoy the event and have a good time celebrating, but keep in mind that this day is you and your partner’s. Avoid tension and any hostility when need be (refer back to the “C” of compromise!), but remember that your happiness is the priority. You won’t please everyone, so don’t sweat trying to.

3

ASK QUESTIONS Enjoy the planning process and seek guidance when you don’t know the answers. There are questions that you likely won’t know you’ll need to answer yet, so don’t be afraid to broach them as they come. Do not assume anything, especially when it comes to what is included in certain pricing, so ask for a breakdown of everything. Did you know some caterers charge $5 per slice of cake they cut? Or that if you want a champagne toast there will be a charge for that too? Make sure you know what you are paying for! This includes asking yourself questions. When in doubt, refer to this question: Do we want it or do we need it? This will help you make a decision quickly and responsibly.

104

BUILD YOUR VENDOR TEAM

C is for The fourth “C” is, of course, for Couple. This is the day about the two of you, the couple. First dating, then engagement and now marriage, it is time to celebrate your history and future. A wedding is about your relationship, your new family and your new life together. Celebrate this milestone with those who are closest to you both! Through all the vendor contracts, last-minute changes and boutonnieres, remember what the real reason is for the day: your love story, your marriage and your new beginning together. Keep that in perspective when the planning starts to feel overwhelming. Keep in mind that everyone has

an opinion, and you will hear them all! You will be inundated with unsolicited advice and requests. Whether it is your mom, sister, bridesmaid, aunt or friends, they all will tell you what they think you should do. And guess what? You don’t have to do what everyone else says. We are here to tell you that it is your day and it should be how you envision it with your partner. Yes, you may have some people contributing to your wedding budget and they will want to control where the money goes, but keep in mind what the day is really about. And that is the two of you and how you want to start the next chapter together as a married couple.

Y

es, you’ve been knee-deep in wedding planning and dreaming since your engagement, but your guests’ first entry into your wedding world comes with the invitations. The stationery (or invitation) suite is the place to really set the scene for your celebrations. Couples have the opportunity to communicate a lot more than just the date and time on their wedding invitations. A wisely crafted invitation suite can share everything from event logistics to the overall feel to attire expectations. In a digital world, formal invitations sent in the mail are a treasured rarity. So it can be confusing to understand the details like how to address them, how to word the invite itself and whom to include in the address. A good designer can make sure the stationery aesthetics are just right, but you have to know what details to print on them! Here is a quick guide to what information to include and how to say it.

WHAT TO INCLUDE ON THE INVITATION

1

HOST LINE

Start off the invitation with who is hosting the festivities. In the past, this opening line often referenced the bride’s parents, but nowadays we see weddings hosted by the couple themselves, both sets of parents, one set of parents or an omission of this line altogether. It isn’t necessary to include the names of all the hosts, a simple “Together with their parents [...]” gets the message across.

2

THE REQUEST TO ATTEND

Not to be overlooked, be sure to ask for the pleasure of your guests’ company. It might seem obvious, but including an explicit invitation to attend lets guests know they are excitedly welcomed to the celebrations. There are many ways to phrase this request, depending on formality and your personality. Here are some examples: • “[NAME & NAME] request the honor of your presence [...]” • “[NAME & NAME] invite you to celebrate with them [...]” • “[NAME & NAME] would love for you to join [...]” • “[NAME & NAME] invite the pleasure of your company [...]”

3

WHO IS GETTING MARRIED

If not already named in the host line, this is your time to loudly and clearly let your guests know who is getting married! Often, this part of the invitation gets some special

typographic treatment and can be printed large and in a statement script. Formal invitations often include the full names of each partner — so get ready to show off your middle name!

4

DATE AND TIME

Depending on the formality of your event, you can write out the date and time in full, or you can use numerals. Whatever works best for you! Formality aside, the most important thing is to be clear and avoid confusion. Some fonts have numerals that are hard to read, so if you’re using figures be sure to select a clear font with no room for misinterpretation. In the past, writing out the year was optional, but as weddings are being planned more and more in advance, it is wise to include the year no matter what.

5

LOCATION

It is important for guests to know exactly where they are expected to be! Include the name of your venue and its full address (street, city, state and ZIP code). Some venues with straightforward locations do not require the address to be spelled out entirely, but no matter what, you should include the city and state. This shows guests right off the bat where they should be planning their travel (if needed).

6

RECEPTION DETAILS

Some invitation suites include a separate stationery piece with all the reception details, or it can be printed on the main invitation if space allows. If your reception is at the same venue as your ceremony, phrasing

like, “reception to follow” will suffice. However, if there is a different location, be sure to clearly note its address and arrival information. When there is a separate venue for the reception, this is when an additional stationery piece is useful.

7

DRESS CODE

While not absolutely necessary, including a dress code guide for your guests is helpful as they plan to attend your big day. Not to distract from the main event (your wedding details!), include dress code guidance in the bottom corner of your invitation, or use a separate details card to communicate this information. While the style of the invitation itself should communicate the level of formality expected, spelling it out helps. Dress Code Examples: • Black Tie • Formal or Black-Tie Optional • Cocktail • Semi-Formal • Beach Formal • Festive • Garden Party • Smart Casual • Casual

8

RSVP INSTRUCTIONS

Lastly, let your guests know how they can accept with pleasure or decline with regrets. RSVP is short for “Répondez, s’il vous plaît,” which means “please respond” in French. It is common for the RSVP information to be included on a separate response card for guests to complete and mail back to you by a specific date. However, many couples are saving on postage and track their RSVPs via a wedding website or other online platform. Whatever method you decide, be sure to clearly communicate how your guests are to respond. ■

Timeless, Southern, Inventive HOW TO INFUSE SOUTHERN FLAIR INTO YOUR MENU, WITH HAMBY CATERING WRITTEN BY Allison Moorman

t’s no wonder that picturesque Charleston, Travel + Leisure’s toprated U.S. city, has become a haven for destination weddings and splendid Southern affairs. Within this vibrant and sought-after locale lies Hamby Catering, the city’s oldest caterer. We chatted with their president and owner, Candice Hudnall, about how her daily to-dos translate into catering some of the most delicious and charming nuptials in the Southeast — and what to look for when it comes to hiring a caterer.

LOWCOUNTRY LOCAL

Charleston resides in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, a place where time runs a little slower, conversation is a little sweeter and the breeze blows a little warmer. Though it can hold its own against the world’s most glittering cities and welcomes visitors from around the globe, Charleston is very protective over one thing — its own. Infusing local flavors into your wedding will immerse your guests in the spirit of your celebration, whether you wed in the city you live in, your hometown or another charming destination.

MARRYING STYLE, SOPHISTICATION AND SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY

It’s true when they say the South leads the charge in hospitality. It also has a unique style that you won’t find anywhere else; a groom might wear a peacock bowtie, rich hues can dominate the rentals and the venues themselves transcend your typical reception hall and touch on the city’s storied history. “Hamby strives to tell a story through our service, from the first tasting to the final course,” says Hudnall. “We can start with our rendition of the bride and groom’s first date meal and end with crowd pleasing dessert and late-night stations that go beyond your typical slice of cake.” Hamby Catering’s approach has not been lost on the Holy City; they’ve continuously been recognized as a top caterer and trusted by both locals and visitors. “We don’t take the city’s trust in us lightly and remember it with each new event we lead,” says Hudnall. The beloved nature of southern cuisine makes for a great beginning. May your marriage be blessed with the same timelessness as the dishes passed down from generation to generation. ■

What Your

Wedding Photographer

Wishes You Knew WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY Hellen Oliveira, Hellen CO Photos + Film

Y

our wedding photographer probably has a long list of tips they want to share about how to guarantee the best pictures. After all, photographing weddings is what they do day in and day out! However, it would also be pretty overwhelming to share years’ worth of knowledge and experience all at once. As a starting point, Hellen Oliveira of Hellen CO Photos + Film shares here a few tips on how to work harmoniously with your photographer. You’ve poured your heart into planning every meaningful moment of your wedding, you’ll want to make sure your photographer is on the same page as you. With these tips in mind, you’re sure to be a satisfied customer.

Selection

Venue

Lighting is everything for photography; clients should keep that in mind when selecting their venue(s), which they have booked by the time they meet with photographers. It is important to think about the aesthetics of the wedding venue and then imagine the photos that will be taken there. If there is no natural light at the venue, then clients need to understand what flash photography is and that it will be necessary to use flash or some form of artificial lighting to capture the event properly.

GETTING

Ready

LOCATION

With venue selection in mind, I hope clients consider the “getting ready” room at the venue for both partners. The photographer will capture getting ready photos at the beginning of the day, setting off the celebrations ahead. The main thing for clients to consider is that they will need a clean, open area for their getting-ready photos. For a soft and clean aesthetic, they’ll want lots of natural lighting.

When it comes to planning music choices for those important wedding moments, the most important thing to consider is if the songs are important to you. Mixing in different genres and eras, here are some tracks to add to your “must play” list:

PROCESSIONAL 1.

The Ultimate Wedding Soundtrack

HELLEN CO PHOTOS + FILM

RECESSIONAL WRITTEN BY Alexandra Dillard

W

hat is the soundtrack to your love story? Choosing songs for your wedding can either be super exciting or completely overwhelming. It is, however, an important step in establishing the vibe and sound that will make your wedding unique.

THE RULES

When it comes to your wedding, there are no rules. But, if you’re looking for some musical guidance, here are some helpful things to consider: • Keep a Spotify or Apple Music playlist so that whenever you hear a song you both like, you can remember it by adding it to the playlist. • Create your list of “must play” songs so that your favorite tunes make a cameo on your favorite day. • Create your list of “do not play” songs. You might not want to hear some songs on your wedding day, if they hold bad memories or you just don’t like them! • Tailor your choices to your own favorite genres and use music as a storytelling device. Personalize your wedding soundtrack by including artists you’ve seen in concert together, “your song” and even covers of classics done by contemporary artists. • Make sure to pick songs that fit special events of the day (entrances, cake cuttings, first dances), keeping in mind the song tempo and thematics. • Think ahead: Is there a certain part of the song you want played at a particular moment? Things can happen quicker than you anticipate, so if there’s a particular part of a song you want played during a specific moment, be sure to tell your sound operator so that they can edit or cue up when appropriate. • Don’t let your favorites miss out. If some of your favorite songs don’t fit into the dancing portion of the evening (not every song is danceable!), those songs can be used during dinner or cocktail hour.

REAL WEDDINGS

ANDREA & AARON In a Casablanca-meets-Egyptian-Revival celebration, Andrea and Aaron ensured there was never a dull moment in their wedding celebration. The couple reinvented traditional wedding fundamentals and successfully created an undeniably amazing party. Since Andrea’s family and friends are not local to Atlanta, the couple wanted a venue in the heart of the city. The Fox Theatre’s central location fit the bill. But aside from the location, the venue’s distinctive Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon secured it as the perfect venue for the couple. A traditional wedding dress wasn’t Andrea’s style, so she decided to wear a custom-made flamenco dress from Sibilina Flamenca in Seville, Spain. And in lieu of a bridal bouquet, she added a handmade, scarlet beaded fan to complete her look. Andrea and Aaron’s ceremony took place on the theater stage in the Egyptian Ballroom. For a truly unique guestbook, friends and family created their own Egyptian cartouche (a hieroglyphic nameplate) as they awaited the ceremony. After vows were exchanged, the doors opened to the Grand Salon for cocktail hour. Guests were greeted with a Moroccan tea tent with tea leaf readings from Handy Entertainment and an electric violinist filling the air with music. The party really got started when Aaron debuted an outfit change and the couple performed their first dance, choreographed by Academy Ballroom Atlanta. Dancing continued as an aerialist on a lollipop hoop enticed guests to the dance floor. To close out the night, the bride and groom created a soul train line and made their exit into happily ever after. REAL WEDDINGS

KENISHA & CAMERON Kenisha and Cameron’s butterfly-filled wedding was a magical and enchanting fairytale. Butterfly thematics portrayed the transition in their lives, from five years of dating to their new marriage. “Our wedding represented so much love between us and ultimately reminded us that life transitions can be absolutely beautiful,” says the bride. With floating butterflies in each vibrantly colored centerpiece, Akeem Clayton Designs executed this metaphor exquisitely. These arrangements adorned the couple’s head and guest tables, and lit candles throughout the reception created a warm and loving atmosphere. The couple chose Biltmore Ballrooms as their venue specifically for the aesthetic. Details like crystal chandeliers and stately columns complemented their vision, and the violet and pink palette was a perfect match for a sophisticated event. On a monogrammed dance floor, Kenisha and Cameron shared their first dance as husband and wife. As their dance began, sparklers were lit and smoke clouds formed around their feet, giving the appearance that they were floating on clouds. The bride shared that the sparkler surrounds felt like a representation of their hearts exploding for each other. Every detail was as beautiful as the next. Not only did Kenisha and Cameron’s love radiate strongly, but they also were showered with love from friends and family. It was as if their guests stepped into the enchanting fairy tale of happilyever-after with them. As a white Rolls Royce chauffeured the newlyweds away at the night’s end, Kenisha and Cameron knew this was a day they’d never forget.

REAL WEDDINGS

KATHLEEN & ERIC As Kathleen and Eric’s first date, the two visited a vintage bookstore and proceeded to extend the date a whole 10 hours. As a vintage lover — and as a nod to their first date — Kathleen wanted her wedding to be a vintage wonderland. Such vintage details included her vintage engagement ring, her mom’s perfume bottle, a retro updo, timeless pearl jewelry and even the flower girl — her grandmother! The couple initially chose their venue, Brasstown Valley Resort, because they desired an outside wedding with a mountain view as their backdrop. But as Mother Nature had other plans, rain forced them to pivot to the venue’s indoor space. The bride was sad about this in the beginning, but their stellar events team put her at ease. The couple stated their vows before a stately stone fireplace which, adorned in white and pale pink roses, baby’s breath and greenery, was just as lovely. Despite the scattered showers, the couple was still able to snag some photo opportunities against the Blue Ridge mountain town atmosphere they so loved. Just as Kathleen ensured vintage details were woven throughout, Eric’s Naval career was incorporated with details like a submarine groom’s cake, using his officer’s saber to cut the cake and the prominence of his U.S. Naval Academy ring. The couple’s wedding date was important to them, as Eric would be deployed soon after. They were glad to have the wedding of their dreams and their honeymoon at Four Seasons Vail before he deployed in the fall. From their own wedding monogram to an antique typewriter guestbook to family heirlooms throughout, Kathleen and Eric’s celebration was timeless, classic and a show of Southern elegance. SKYLER & REID When explaining their vision to each of their wedding vendors, Skyler and Reid painted an image of a tea garden partyturned-wedding. “I wanted the wedding to feel like an event all of our friends and family could come to and say, ‘This is definitely Skyler and Reid’s wedding,’” the bride shares. Skyler’s passions lie in sewing, crochet, cross stitch and basically anything crafty, meaning her skills were put to use to personalize their wedding. Such handmade details included crocheted table decor, food pun laser-cut signs and the bride’s crocheted parasol. Regarding Skyler’s ensemble, the bride stunned in a lilac gown with a handstitched cape (created by Skyler’s sewing teacher). Skyler made the daring choice to ship off her gown to its designer in New York to have it dyed a purple hue. And the risk paid off! Completing her look, hairstylist Anna Thompson nailed a Pride and Prejudice-inspired updo while makeup artist Courtney Musick achieved old-Hollywood vibes and a bright red lip. Not everyone is comfortable busting a move in the daylight, so Skyler and Reid wanted their guests to have other forms of entertainment during the afternoon celebrations. Such bonus activities were a Robot Booth photo booth, lawn games, musical entertainment from James Patrick Morgan and, most notably, a bouncy slide and inflatable axe throwing. Because ... why not? The Butterfly Pavilion’s airy, lush and gorgeously green venue perfectly set the scene for this whimsical tea party atmosphere. Beneath a leafy canopy, the sun shone upon these vibrant newlyweds. As friends and family took part in a tea toast send off, Skyler and Reid knew they achieved a truly memorable celebration of love. REAL WEDDINGS

SUSHMA & KISHAN Over the course of three days, Sushma and Kishan hosted 200 guests for five entirely unique events. Following Indian tradition, the couple celebrated a Mehendi Ki Raat, Haldi, Holi, Garba and wedding ceremony. At the picturesque Meadows at Mossy Creek, the outdoor ceremony was complemented by breathtaking mountain views, while a modern farmhouse-style venue hosted the reception. Sushma is a wedding planner with her own company, Simply Posh Events. Therefore, when it came to planning her wedding, she was equipped to make everything perfect. All of the events, color schemes and outfits were conceived by Sushma, making for an extra special day. Sushma flipped tradition and stood out in a vibrant fuchsia lehenga while her bridesmaids, Kishan and his groomsmen wore white. In contrast, the couple surprised their guests at the reception with a grayscale aesthetic and outfit changes into a black Anushree Reddy lehenga and gray Suitsupply tuxedo. Sushma custom designed her looks, from picking the exact raw silk material to the color of thread used to construct the garments. Throughout each event, Sushma followed the advice she gives her clients: “No matter how tired you are, know that guests feed off the energy of the bride and groom. You can sleep when it’s over, but be the most hype, energetic bride and groom that you can be.” In Hinduism, rain is a sign of good luck. As the couple was driving away after the ceremony in a Packard OneTwenty getaway car, it started to sprinkle. This rain on an otherwise sunny day was a sign that their union was blessed by God — a beautiful reminder.

REAL WEDDINGS

ARIEL & ALEX Ariel and Alex’s wedding day was an Italian-inspired soiree, dripping in elegance and designed to highlight both Western and Taiwanese traditions. The couple originally dreamt of a destination wedding in Positano, Italy, but due to the pandemic, they began to look for venues locally. Ariel and Alex wanted the overall theme to be modern and romantic, and to still achieve an Italian aesthetic. Narrowing down their venue search to just wineries, the couple ended up selecting Montaluce’s quiet and intimate atmosphere as their venue. Montaluce didn’t feel like Georgia at all, but instead, it felt like a step into the Tuscan landscape. The morning of the wedding, the couple and their respective wedding parties began their day at Montaluce’s villas. Here, they dressed in traditional Taiwanese attire and took part in a traditional tea ceremony with their family. After this tradition, the couple returned to their villas to change into Western wedding attire, staying separate until their breathtaking “first look” in the vineyard. The ceremony itself took place inside the wine production room at Montaluce. Illuminated by the glow of flickering candles, the ceremony was intimate and warm. Montaluce’s oldworld charm set the tone for the decor choices, and the floral installations and candles accented that vision perfectly. The reception took place in Montaluce’s main dining room with spectacular views of the vineyard. Guests enjoyed a delicious dinner as jazz played in the background and the sun set over the rolling hills. In spite of the original Italian plans, Ariel and Alex’s north Georgia wedding was romantic, intimate and as dreamy as can be. REAL WEDDINGS

SARAH & CHARLIE “All’s well that ends well to end up with you.” With Taylor Swift songs as the soundtrack, Sarah and Charlie’s fun-loving wedding was feminine with a modern kick. Sarah drafted such inspiration for their wedding from pastel pink wildflowers and an edgy modernity. When deciding on a venue, Brick and Ivey’s light and bright take on a modern industrial warehouse sealed the deal. The whitewashed brick walls and natural wooden chandeliers were a beautiful, neutral canvas to execute their vision against. The bride’s Willowby by Watters strapless gown from The White Magnolia was embellished with glittering sequins and pearls. But smiley-face ankle socks, Veja sneakers and retro sunglasses made the otherwise traditional look feel true to her. Photos of the couple toasting champagne bottles while showing off their sneakers ended up being some of their favorites from the whole day. Having their fun-loving personalities shine through in classic, romantic poses like this was important to Sarah and Charlie. Reception seating for the couple’s 135 guests was depicted on a custom, petthemed seating chart titled “Sit. Stay.” The bride runs a pet portrait business, Sarah Paints Pets, and she wanted to incorporate her art into the celebrations. In an incredibly thoughtful act, each table had a portrait of one of the guest’s pets on it. Needless to say, this was a hit! The DJ played “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)” to close out the evening. In the recording, Swift sang, “It’s a love story, baby, just say, ‘Yes,’” and, of course, Sarah and Charlie obliged.

REAL WEDDINGS

JOI & CHRISTOPHER Joi and Christopher met in 2010 while in college at Tuskegee University. A friendship evolved into a romantic relationship and the couple moved to Las Vegas together after graduating. After becoming engaged in 2020, the couple realized that the best place to be was closest to the people they loved most. So they moved back to Atlanta to be near family and the wedding planning began! So on a beautiful September day just blocks from the square of historic Marietta, the couple celebrated their union. The weekend festivities took place at the charming Stanley House Mansion, a historic 1895 bed and breakfast and event venue. The inn’s historic furnishings, intricate woodwork and southern elegance set the scene for the wedding atmosphere. As the ultimate convenience, the couple’s family arrived and spent the night at the inn the night prior. One the morning of the wedding, they all enjoyed a gourmet breakfast while the bride’s hair and makeup artists worked their magic highlighting her already beautiful spirit. Having everyone together in one spot added another layer of closeness and intimacy to the day. Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktail hour in the courtyard while the couple snuck away for portraits, as they did not opt for a “first look” before the ceremony. Joi and Christopher were received by the guests as they descended the Stanley House grand hall staircase into the ballroom. Then, dinner and dancing ensued! This wedding set Christopher and Joi up for a beautiful start to their married life. They’re forever grateful to “Mother Tuskegee” for introducing them over a decade ago, an occurrence that set in motion a lifetime of love together. REAL WEDDINGS

EMILY & COPE When it came to planning their wedding, Emily and Cope knew one thing for certain: typical wedding traditions were not their thing. After considering an intimate elopement or destination ceremony, the couple ultimately decided they wanted to celebrate surrounded by loved ones — thus a “big day” was set in motion. Their festive fete was planned in less than six months, as they did not want a long engagement. Integral to making their non-traditional ideas a reality was florist and designer Raven Scott from Raven Scott Creative. Following their meeting with her, the couple felt confident in their desired outside-the-box celebration and that the expedited planning process was feasible. The Carlyle was the venue for the celebration. The contemporary-meetshistoric space was just the right amount of blank slate. The space was already lovely as is, allowing the wedding team the freedom to do as much or as little as desired, and it would still be a visually pleasing space. In the venue’s clean canvas, color and texture danced and a warm, ethereal summer garden sunset aesthetic was achieved. Notably, the couple and the designer drew inspiration from Henri Matisse’s “La Japonaise,” tulle textiles and frothy plumosa ferns. With a curated selection of floral installations in each area of the event space, guests were invited into another piece of the story and the overall visual narrative. Such installations included bold colors paired with summery greenery, mixed materials and an array of both dried and fresh blooms. Under the glow of a “Better Together” neon installation, the couple hosted an event that was true-to-them and undeniably fun. The joy radiating off of the couple proved just that — Emily and Cope really are better together. To see more photos from this real wedding, go to atlantastyleweddings.com/real-weddings.

REAL WEDDINGS

JULIA & TAYLOR From day one, Julia and Taylor knew they wanted their wedding to be colorful, bright and fun. So that they could incorporate lots of colors and florals, they chose a vintage botanical/garden theme. The industrial atmosphere of The Engine Room paired with eclectic floral details brought this vision to life. Julia loves florals, and this was prevalent throughout the day. Your Best Guest made all her dreams come true, incorporating a jewel-toned color palette into arrangements reminiscent of wildflower foliage. Beyond the blooms themselves, Taylor donned a floral tie, Julia’s shoes were floral print and flower seed packets were used as the table seating chart. The guest dress code even was “garden party attire,” encouraging everyone to wear florals and fun colors. The vintage-meets-floral piece de resistance was the fireplace mantle that the couple used as an altar. Julia and Taylor loved the idea of buying something as unique as this mantle, knowing they could use it as decor in their home as a reminder of their promise to each other on their wedding day. The couple loves shows like Downton Abbey, Peaky Blinders and Wes Anderson films, so these factors inspired their apparel choices. Julia’s hair was specifically Downton Abbeythemed and Taylor’s three piece suit and pocket watch were nods to Peaky Blinders’ costuming. So many details of this wedding were intentional nods to inside jokes and the history of the couple. From the outside, it’s a beautiful wedding. But knowing these Easter eggs, the celebration really transcended into something sentimentally spectacular.

our philosophy is simple:

to make each and every client feel appreciated and valued, with timely and detailed service, promises delivered above and beyond, and to remain focused on the diversity of our clients and their needs.

MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE

Even if you don’t decide to change your name, having multiple certified copies of your marriage certificate is a good idea. You can purchase certified copies in advance when you first apply for your marriage license. This is a good method, as you’ll already have it paid for and you can receive the certificate and certified copies all at the same time. Your official certificate and its copies are issued directly from the county and will have special seals that verify their authenticity. These embossed seals mean you can’t just make your own copy.

Alessandra Lee Photography

The first step in legally changing your name is physically obtaining your marriage license. It’s important to note that your marriage certificate is not the same as your marriage license. Your marriage license serves as proof of eligibility to marry while the marriage certificate is the official documentation that your marriage occurred. So before moving on to any name-change tasks, you’ll need your county clerk’s office certified marriage certificate. Typically, you’ll receive this two-to-four weeks after your wedding.

Custom Wedding Planning & Coordination We bring your plans together and your ideas to life!

Not sure how many copies to order? Three to five is a good starting point, but don’t stress! If needed, you can simply order more copies down the road. Cost: In Fulton County, certified copies of marriage records are $10 per copy.

SOCIAL SECURITY

Reporting the change to the Social Security Administration (SSA) is the gateway to the name change process. This step is required before changing your name on anything else. You can do this either by mail or in person, but there’s no way to complete the process online. Why is this the crucial first step? Your SSA record is linked to your identity in the eyes of every federal and state entity. To change your name on anything official, it needs to match up with your SSA record. To get started, there are three steps: 1. Ensure you have the following documents: one form of a valid photo ID, original or certified copy of your marriage certificate (no photocopies!) and proof of U.S. citizenship. For each document, you need to provide either the original document or a certified, governmentissued copy. 2. Once your identification documents are in hand, print and fill out Form SS-5 (the application itself for a social security card). You can download the form from ssa.gov. Be sure to sign with your new name! 3. Lastly, submit your application. To do this, locate the closest SSA office by searching your ZIP code at ssa.gov locator. Once you’ve found the most convenient location, you can either mail your application and documents to that SSA office or you can visit in person. We recommend doing this step in person to avoid mailing sensitive documents that you want to keep on hand (like your driver’s license!) Once these steps are complete, you’ll receive your new SSA card in the mail in 10-14 business days (along with your documents — if you mailed them in). Cost: None

PASSPORT

If you don’t have a passport already, you can skip this step — or go ahead and apply for a passport for the first time. However, if you’re looking to update your name on your existing passport, here’s what to do. You’ll have to wait until your new Social Security card arrives before you can legally change the name on your passport. Once you have your SS card in hand, you can get a new passport, which will then allow you to change your name on your driver’s license or state ID. You can either complete this process in person at a Passport Acceptance Facility (find a location at: iafdb.travel.state.gov) or by mail. Depending on how old your passport is, there will be a different application you’ll need to complete. All of these forms can be found at eforms.state.gov. • If your passport was issued more than a year ago, you’ll complete DS-82. • If your passport was issued less than a year ago, you’ll complete DS-5504. • If your passport has been expired for more than five years, you’ll complete DS-11. In addition to the application form, you will need to provide your current U.S. passport and a certified copy of your marriage certificate. And of course, you’ll need an updated color photo for this application. If you’re applying in person, the facility can take your photo. But if you are mailing in, you’ll need to follow the U.S. Department of State’s guidelines. You can take the photo yourself, but we recommend you get an official photo taken at a business like The UPS Store, Walgreens, CVS or Walmart. This will ensure the photo checks all the necessary boxes. Basic requirements can be found on the U.S. Department of State’s website. Once all the required elements are mailed in, you will get your new passport in the mail. The timeline for this varies widely, depending on demand.

Cost: $140 for a passport book and card $110 for a passport book $30 for a passport card $0 for existing passports less than a year old

DRIVER’S LICENSE OR STATE ID

For this step, you will need to go in person to a Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) facility within 60 days of your legal name change. To save time, we recommend filling

out the online application form (found at dds.drives.ga.gov) before you go to a DDS Customer Service Center. You’ll also need: • Your marriage certificate or court order indicating the name change • Proof of any other previous name changes, including divorce decrees • Your current Georgia driver’s license or state ID Cost: Up to $32

VEHICLE TITLE AND REGISTRATION

You can change the name on your Georgia title at your county tag office. Find an office near you at dor.georgia.gov/motor-vehicles.

VOTER REGISTRATION

Changing your voter registration varies by county in the state of Georgia, so be sure to check your county’s government website for instructions on updating your voter registration.

BANK ACCOUNTS

Now that all of the government-related steps are complete, it’s time to change your name on personal accounts. First up, we recommend you change your name at your bank or credit union. In instances where businesses might ask for two forms of ID, your new license and a credit/debit card are often checked together, so you’ll want them to match! To change the name on your account(s), most banks require you to visit a physical branch office with your photo ID and a certified copy of your marriage certificate. While doing this, you can request new debit cards or checks and get it all done at once. However, if you don’t live near your bank branch or you use online banking, going to an office might not be possible. Each institution will have a variation of the in-person method. Call the customer support phone number on the back of your card to check and see what their process is.

PERSONAL ACCOUNTS

And lastly, it’s time to update everything else! This includes everything from your health insurance plan to your social media accounts. After a few months you’ll probably still be finding accounts out there with your old name, and that’s OK! You’d be surprised just how many places have your name on file. No sweat, you can just change them as you come by them. Common accounts to get you started include home mortgage or rental lease, utilities, mobile plan, internet, pharmacies, medical providers, professional certifications, investment accounts, loyalty programs (airlines, hotels, etc.) and social media accounts. ■

REAL WEDDINGS

SARA & REID Sara and Reid’s wedding at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center was a true fairy tale come to life. Nestled in a serene setting away from the bustling city, the Tudor-style venue provided the perfect backdrop for their romantic and whimsical celebration. Sara was glowing, with a sleek bridal bun and an elegant, strapless gown. Her bridesmaids wore silk taupe gowns and carried white parasols, adding a touch of grace as they strolled through the gardens. Meanwhile, the groom and his groomsmen donned classic black suits complete with pastel boutonnieres and custom socks featuring peaches and logos of their favorite football teams. The ceremony took place in a secluded secret garden, where chairs were arranged in two half-circles facing the bride and groom. A string quartet played modern classics, setting the mood as guests arrived. As Sara and Reid exchanged their vows and sealed their love with a kiss, guests tossed lavender into the air, creating a magical and fragrant moment as they took their first steps as husband and wife. The reception unfolded in the mansion’s courtyard, where decor in pastel hues accented the breathtaking architecture. European archways, Spanish flooring and flowing white drapery enhanced the dreamlike ambiance, while abundant floral arrangements added natural beauty. As the night progressed, candles and flowers lined the grand staircase, creating an intimate and romantic setting for the celebration. Sara and Reid’s genuine love and happiness were evident throughout the day. Their sense of calm and gratitude radiated, leaving no doubt that they were meant to be together.

REAL WEDDINGS

CHRISTINE & LOI Christine & Loi’s fall outdoor wedding ceremony unfolded in the picturesque setting of The Venue at Daisy Hill in Fayetteville, Georgia. The ceremony’s focal point was a gracefully curved altar adorned with a profusion of white flowers and lush greenery. This ethereal backdrop birthed an enchanting atmosphere, accentuating the couple’s love and commitment. The bride, resplendent in a beautiful Allure Bridals gown from Aisle & Veil, and the groom, handsome in a classic black tuxedo, exchanged vows as they faced the venue’s serene lake. The natural beauty of the surroundings served as a magnificent backdrop for their special day. As if blessing their union, nature itself intervened at the perfect moment. At the conclusion of the ceremony, a rainbow arched across the sky, sprinkling some magic onto the occasion. Their photographer, Glorianna Chan, captured this serendipitous moment, preserving the beauty and symbolism of the day. During the reception, the couple paid homage to their Korean heritage with an outfit change. As the reception commenced, both the bride and groom changed into traditional Korean hanbok outfits. Joining in the celebration, the bride’s mother and grandmother also adorned themselves in stunning hanbok dresses, further symbolizing the merging of traditions and generations. This fall outdoor wedding ceremony was a true celebration of love and heritage, blending tradition with personal style. Surrounded by the idyllic scenery and touched by a rainbow’s embrace, the couple left the reception in a sparkler tunnel and embarked on their new journey together.
