CHI St. Vincent Saves Walter Anger’s Life! W alter Anger expected to be in a little pain after moving his son into the dorms. But, he didn’t expect to end up in the emergency room the following night. Although the patient’s symptom was back pain, the emergency department physician at CHI St. Vincent Infirmary noticed when he examined Walter’s x-ray that his heart looked enlarged. A CT scan was ordered immediately and it was determined

that Walter had a large aneurysm in his aorta, which created a complex split in the wall of his aorta, referred to as aortic dissection. Fortunately for Walter, Frederick Meadors, MD, an experienced cardiac surgeon, was on hand to do this complex surgery. Explaining the gravity of this situation, Dr. Meadors says that approximately 90 percent of people who have aortic dissection die within 14 days if it is not operated on emergently.

Patient Story

“An aortic dissection is not common,” says Dr. Meadors, “but we do see several of these cases a year because they are referred to us from across the state. We have a lot of experience with fixing these, and it’s a delicate surgery.

Within eight weeks of the surgery, Walter was back to work and able to travel. After surgery and 12 weeks of cardiac rehab, Walter says he’s feels better than ever. “I was able to go on hikes, take walks,....I’m in a lot better shape now than I was.”

Early Detection of Breast Cancer Inspires Advocacy for Awareness Patient Story

A

Labor and Delivery nurse at CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs, Kristin Dunn discovered she had breast cancer at a young age. She was 29 years old and two months from her wedding date. Fortunately, her early detection meant early intervention. Because of her family history with breast cancer, Kristin decided to have a bilateral mastectomy to avoid the possibility of the cancer returning. The surgery took place before her wedding and two days following, she began a three-month course of chemotherapy.

obtain her doctorate degree as a nurse practitioner. She’s also mother to a baby girl, Dorothy. When she questioned why God placed this on her, Kristin decided it was so that she could be an advocate, share her story to help other women in similar situations through their journey, and to raise awareness in hopes of helping women avoid a similar path. In addition to monthly breast selfexams, 3D mammography can mean early detection for more women in Arkansas. CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs is bringing 3D mammography to southwest Arkansas.

Through it all, Kristin has continued working and going to school to
