Victorian bedspread returns to Ayscoughfee Hall Home

A ‘priceless’ Victorian bedspread hand-sewn at Ayscoughfee Hall has returned to its Spalding home, more than a century after it was first made. The double bed cover, which dates back to 1890, was picked up for £5 at a church bazaar in West London by a bedspread maker who traced it back to South Lincolnshire through census records. The crucial piece of evidence was the signature of Ada F. Bonner with the date 1890 which had been stitched into the corner. She was the daughter of the last tenant to live at Ayscoughfee Hall, Charles Foster Bonner, who was resident at the historic home from around 1874 until his death in 1896. Patchwork bedspread maker Alice Nissen, who discovered the cover at the bazaar and has donated it to the hall, said: “When I came

Lost Cat

Since the 18th September seven year old male tabby cat, Mouse has been missing from the Cross Street area in Spalding. He is neutered and also micro chipped but doesn’t wear a collar as he is a very active cat. He is extremely loyal and not often far from home, he usually comes running when he hears his owners car or with a good shake of the treat jar. Since the 25th September another male tabby cat has been missing belonging to another Cross Street resident and despite all of their searching (leaflets, posters and

across this bedspread on the bric-a-brac stall at my local church I couldn’t bear the thought that this magnificent piece of work should be thrown out. Most unsold stuff gets skipped. “We are likely to move house in the next 12 months so I have been sorting cupboards and I rediscovered Ada F. Bonner’s bedspread. Thinking this was piece of history, I asked the Embroiderer’s Guild if they would like it for their museum but at the same time I looked up Ada F. Bonner in the census records for 1891. “ Julia Knight, Museum Officer at Ayscoughfee Hall which is run by South Holland District Council, said: “To us this is priceless because we have so little, if anything, from a family that have lived at the hall. It’s one thing that we can be sure was made in one of the rooms here before 1898 when the hall was bought by the people of Spalding.”

night time searches) neither one has returned or been found. Assuming that the worst has not happened and Mouse has merely strayed too far and is being fed by kind a person, the owners are urging them to get in contact so that they can be reunited. If anyone has any information; good or bad; regarding either of the cats, please contact Laura on 07957 159425.

Following hot on the heels of their award winning comedy “Comfort & Joy”, Spalding Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society (SADOS) present their 2011 autumn comedy, “Sandcastles”, from the 16th to the 19th November at the South Holland Centre. Written by Bob Larbey, best known for the TV comedy classics, “The Good Life”, “Ever Decreasing Circles” and “As Time goes by”, “Sandcastles” illustrates perfectly the British obsession with class. Based on an English beach, the Pattersons and the Billets are proud owners of beach huts, and over the years they have developed their own set of unwritten rules on beach hut etiquette. This tranquil life is threatened by the jealousy of other beach users, and by the irreverent Doug, who with his beautiful “nieces”, have rented the adjacent vacant hut. Things come to a head when the beach users stage a protest, and a holiday romance blossoms! Directed by Martin Tyrrell, “Sandcastles” guarantees to raise a warm gale of laughter on a chilly November evening. To help the mood along, the South Holland Centre are

SADOS has been entertaining the people of Spalding since 1928, although an earlier version of the society dates back as far as 1866. Although many members have been with the society for many years, they are always looking for new blood, and there are always opportunities for people with a love of theatre, whether that be in the wings, in the chorus, or in the spotlight! They usually stage a play in the Autumn and a musical in the Spring, and they have just announced that the musical in May 2012 will be the fantastic “Fiddler on the Roof”. Elaine Deathridge, who is producing both shows, is realising a long term ambition of bringing ‘Fiddler’ to Spalding. “We will have a cast of over 30 people, and would love to welcome new people to get involved”“If you saw “Me & My Girl” last May, you know the quality of the production that we can put on, with an all-local cast!” If you are interested, you can drop a line to sadosmail@googlemail.com or ring Martin Tyrrell on 07809 585913. We have teamed up with Sados and have got three pairs of tickets to give away for their opening night performance. The first winner will also have a fish & chip supper included. Pumpkin Festival packed with fun THE 11th annual Spalding Pumpkin Festival was today hailed a resounding success after an evening glowing with fun and sparkling with fireworks. The Market Place was transformed into a sea of orange as thousands of people from around South Holland and beyond joined in the celebrations to honour the wonderful pumpkin. Hundreds of youngsters and many in their senior years were kitted out in pumpkin fashion, the Sheep Market was thriving with stalls and nearby shops were bedecked in pumpkin paraphenalia. Many families joined in the spectacle of the Pumpkin Parade, headed by Flower Queen Daisy Ivatt as lantern-holding youngsters lit up the darkness while touring the town.

finale with fireworks launched from above the South Holland Centre before The Wild Boys rounded off a mouth-watering series of musical entertainment.

Up to 10,000 people in total took part in the festival during the whole day with between 1,500 and 2,000 joining the parade and an estiimated crowd of between 6,000 and 8,000 joining the event in the evening.

South Holland District Council Deputy Leader Councillor Nick Worth said: “This was a real treat for all the family to enjoy. A celebration of the harvest and all that is good in South Holland.”

Food, fancy dress, pumpkin carving, entertainment including music and drama were all part of thrilling itinerary of entertainment.

Grower David Bowman is the UK’s biggest producer of pumpkins, producing more than two million every year to supply supermarkets up and down the country. He gives away hundreds of pumpkins away at the festival every year.

After a short-listing process in the weeks leading up to the final, Katie was put through her paces by industry experts but had a little fun on the way. Katie says “part of the final judging, as a diversion from the world of beauty all the finalists were asked to work in Jamie Oliver’s restaurant designing and producing a cocktail. It was great fun and very different from my day to day job” The result of the final was not announced until the ceremony itself, where Katie found herself in the company of celebrities including Katie Price and Callum Best. Hills Managing Director Darryl Simpson who attended the event with Katie said “ we are absolutely thrilled that Katie has been

recognised in this way. We feel we have excellent people working on the business, but for Katie to win a national award ahead of iconic retailers like Harrods is really something” Will this change Katie’s life? Well maybe in the future, but for now after a night out in London and a day’s shopping in the West End with her MD, it was back to what Katie loves best - spending time with her customers on the Clarins Counter at Hills.

Advice - Tips To Avoid A Debt Hangover! by Diane Clay

Christmas is a time of giving, but you don’t want to give yourself a headache in the New Year with bills and debts you can’t afford. It’s all too easy to overspend – there are tempting offers and pressures to buy, but you must decide how much you can afford before you start spending.

2 Don’t Forget The Everyday Bills Remember that rent, the mortgage, council tax, utility bills, food bills and other existing debts still have to be paid – and the consequences can be severe if they’re not. Even though it’s Christmas, get your priorities right.

8 Do Your Own Credit Checks If you are going to use a credit card, shop around and compare terms. Some cards charge high interest rates, but provide interest free periods or discounts. Budget for all these costs and put the payment dates in your diary.

3 Don’t Bank On An Overdraft If you do need more money, don’t just run up an overdraft without talking to your bank first – it will work out much more expensive.

9 Be Organised There’s a lot to remember at Christmas. If you’ve borrowed money don’t forget that it won’t be long before you have to make a payment. Make sure you pay on time, even if it is only the minimum, or you will be faced with additional charges.

4 Keep Things Simple If you can afford to pay for your goods outright by cash, cheque, or debit card, don’t be persuaded to take out extended credit agreements unless they really do work out cheaper. 5 Shop Around Try as many different places as possible to find the best price. Buy what you want and not what other people say you need. Be wary of extended warranties; the cost of a repair could be less than the cost of the warranty.

Follow our tips for avoiding a Christmas debt hangover: 1 Plan Early For Christmas Be realistic and budget accordingly. Work out how much you are going to spend on each person – and stick to it. Manage expectations as to what you or Santa can give.

6 Buy Safe To Be Safe Whatever the deal, whatever the temptation, don’t buy from unauthorised traders and don’t borrow from unauthorised lenders. The initial savings and convenience may prove to be a false economy. 7 Read The Small Print If you do decide to take credit, check for hidden extras in any credit agreement. Work out the total amount payable. Ensure that the monthly instalments are within your budget before signing. Interest free credit can seem attractive, but if you don’t pay on time, or miss a payment, you could have to pay a lot more.

10 Start Planning And Saving For Next Christmas! Once Christmas is over, it’s worth looking at what you did well and what you didn’t. Learn from your mistakes and start planning how you will do things differently next year. This might also be a good time to start saving for next Christmas. Saving For Christmas The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has produced a guide to help you work out the best way to save for Christmas. The guide gives you a description of the different savings options available, including: • bank and building society savings accounts • Christmas clubs with local shops • Christmas hamper and voucher schemes • supermarket stamp schemes. There is also a chart which lets you compare all the different options. To view the information, go to: www.consumerdirect. gov.uk or call 08454 04 05 06. Some bigger Christmas clubs belong to the Christmas Prepayment Association (CPA). These clubs pay the money they get from their customers into a special fund which offers protection for the customer. You can find out more by going to the CPA website at: www.cpa-advice.org.uk. Planning, budgeting and organisation are key to avoid getting into debt at Christmas and beyond. If your spending runs out of control, you can soon find that debt is not only a problem at Christmas, but can become a way of life. If you do get into difficulties, get advice as soon as you can from your local Citizens Advice Bureau or visit www.adviceguide.org.uk

The bureau is also open at the following:   Parish Offices, 11 West End, Holbeach:   Wednesdays   (drop-in for 15 minute assessment interviews)   Fridays   (appointments only):10am – 1pm   Market House, Market St, Long Sutton:   Mondays (drop-in for 15 minute assessment interviews)   Thursdays (appointments only):10am – 1pm

School News Ayscoughfee Hall School It has been a busy start to the term for the children of Ayscoughfee Hall School. The whole school enjoyed a visit from Mike Smith and his performance poetry workshop. Mike captivated the children and engaged with his audience in an entertaining and thought provoking way. Years 4 and 6 benefited from an Electricity workshop run by another visitor, David Evans. Year 6 have also been busy taking their eleven plus papers and more latterly have been improving their cycling proficiency with the Bikeability course. The Reception year had a trip to the market and Year 3 visited the archaeological site at Flag Fen to learn more about the way of life in Ancient Britain. The Year 1 children loved their Pirate day and the whole school participated in the Harvest festival on 5th October. The new Kindergarten class have settled in really well and are enjoying life at the school. On the sporting front, it has also been a busy time with netball, tag-rugby and cross-

Weston St Mary

Our school has been busy learning about Africa this term. We have had a very enjoyable African Drumming workshop. Class 2 went on an ‘African Live’ trip to Lowestoft. Africa Live is described as an awe inspiring recreation of the African Savannah, where animals roam freely together as they would in the wild. The children had the opportunity to get close up to the animals and discover the sights, sounds and smells of the world’s most vibrant and exciting continent. As part of the day, the children rode on the safari road train which had commentary of the African savannah as part of the tour. They also took part in an African adventure workshop where they became

country fixtures taking place. Calypso Priestley was the individual winner of the under 9 South Holland cross country event at Snowden Fields in Crowland reaching the finishing line ahead of 60 other competitors. Outside of school hours, Hugo Kedzlie continues to grow from strength to strength on the golf course and recently won a national golf skills tournament against over 5000 other competitors. Hugo is already representing the County under 16 boys golf team at the age of 11. Coming up soon on 24th November is the school’s art gallery event where the children will be exhibiting their own works of art. A further date for the diary is the annual Christmas Cracker on 10th November run by the school PTA. All are welcome to the event which starts at 7.00pm and, with a host of seasonal stalls, provides an ideal opportunity to get the Christmas preparations underway.

Bishop Tim of Lincoln came to visit our Weston school. The children were delighted in showing him around our school. He gave a very interesting assembly which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Children in year 5 and 6 went to a Tag Rugby event at Spalding Rugby club where they took part with lots of other local primary schools. It was a very successful day.

12th October was Roast Dinner Day. All our children had the chance to have a free roast dinner and we asked

School News Spalding Grammar School Yet another exciting Academic Year is underway at Spalding Grammar School, especially given that the School has re-organised into Vertical Forms. Vertical Forms are Tutor Groups that have a mix of students from Year 7 to Year 13 although subject lessons are still taught in groups of the same age students. The idea that older students support younger ones is impacting so quickly is to the surprise of the students, staff and parents who initially had reservations. Vertical Form Tutors are now able to spend dedicated time with a smaller number of students within the Year Group and the opportunity for the Senior students to lead from the front has started to pay dividends in terms of helping their personal development.

Spalding Grammar School is, and always has been, at the forefront of the leading schools in Lincolnshire and is fully committed to developing fully rounded individuals who will go on to make their mark in society, whether that be through University, Apprenticeship or other means. The increased success rates in sporting areas such as Football (not a traditionally notable area for Grammar Schools) as well as results within the Engineering Diploma demonstrates that we have a dedicated team of Teaching and Support staff who are able to move themselves and their thinking forward whilst providing the students with the Academic and individual prowess required to succeed in a hugely competitive working environment.

We have also seen that the younger students are gaining the confidence to be able to hold meaningful discussions and conversations with the older students – a real break from tradition - which can only be for the better.

VIBE, Contemporary Youth Choir, have been back in the South Holland Centre on Thursday‘s, from 5.30 – 7pm, rehearsing hard for their forthcoming Christmas performances!

It has been a very busy start to our new term of pre school music and singing classes and it’s been great to see new faces joining our classes this term.

I am thrilled this term to see lots of new members, and always welcome more, so if you are between 8 to 18 years old and love to sing why not come and join us. You don’t need to read music or have any previous singing experience.’ Contact The South Holland Centre 01775 764777, southhollandcentre.co.uk

shop smart, shop local Shopping local saves you money Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us all that sole traders = expensive, but the evidence just isn’t there to back this up . If you add in travel, parking costs, fees to transport larger items home and your time, the overall cost is often much higher. Shopping locally retains our community People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns and villages but don’t equate this to how they spend their money. Shops will only survive if customers spend locally – so if you want a vibrant town centre, where people can socialise as well as shop, shop locally. Shopping local retains our distinctiveness Many town centres in Britain look the same with franchises and multinationals. Our independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Independent shops keep traditional local products alive. Adult Read of The Month - The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal Winner of the Costa Biography Award and a Library Book of the Month, this title comes highly recommended by our customers. If you wouldn’t normally pick up non-fiction, try this, the tale of the author’s inheritance of a fabulous collection of Japanese carved animals and the unfolding story of his family through the history of the carvings. The book brings to life exotic locations and cultures in Paris, Vienna and Japan. Beautifully written, it has been described as ‘absorbing’, fascinating’, ‘unique’ and a ‘must read’.

Children’s Read of The Month - Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Alex Scheffler For Halloween and Bonfire night and from the team that produced the Gruffalo, this is the story of a happy witch who flies around on her broomstick with her contented cat, until her hat gets blown away by a gust of wind. As they search for it they are joined on the broom by other creatures until disaster strikes and the broom breaks under the weight. Read the book and see what happens next. A lovely story that you will have to read night after night and you won’t be allowed to miss any words out! We can’t recommend this book highly enough.

Tulips Update Following their very indifferent start to the new football season with only two league points gained from their opening four matches in the ChromaSport United Counties League, Spalding United’s new look team found their feet and enjoyed a glorious month. With four victories and a draw, and scoring 17 goals while conceding just two in the process, the Tulips quickly climbed the ladder to reach the play-off spots in fifth position. Much credit for the team’s insurgence was the introduction of new signing Greg Smith, who the older supporters associate with as “an old fashioned centre forward”, a person who knows where the net is. The likeable and very friendly 21-year-old quickly became their favourite by scoring ten goals in his first six appearances. As a bonus for the team, Greg’s appetite for goals rubbed off on fellow striker Simon Mowbray who suddenly started to hit the target and is now just one goal behind his rival for top spot. The beginning of September saw the arrival of new goalkeeper Nick Conroy, an old playing colleague of manager Andrew Stanhope, who has without doubt, brought stability to the defence. He conceded just two goals in his first five games. At the hub of operations is centre half and captain Glen Fuff, a real inspiration on and off the pitch. The Tulips are celebrating their 90th anniversary this season and are arranging a series of events to mark the occasion. As an opener the club signed a partnership agreement with leading local junior club Spalding

Eddie & Glen Fuff 20

Striker, Simon Mowbray Athletic Junior FC who run teams for all age groups. The ultimate aim of the partnership will see a senior Spalding team take to the field with a squad of “home grown” players. A group of Athletic’s players, (the “Blue Army”) are now regular and very vocal attendees at the Tulips’ home games, their cheerleading chants etc., being welcomed by everyone and in particular the players The birthday celebrations continued with a Spalding Re-United hog roast function in the Social Club. In many ways it was a disappointing day with so few old players, managers and coaches attending, but in other ways it was a success, giving everyone the opportunity to have a chat in a relaxed atmosphere and to enjoy some excellent food. The next confirmed birthday celebration event is an evening of live music, again in the Social Club, on Saturday, December 17th (8pm). If you like your music to be upbeat with a rocky ‘Eagles’ country sound, then you will not want to miss seeing and listening to the excellent 101 Proof. The Spalding-based band, who incidentally are celebrating 21 years on the road, play very few gigs in their home town, but are much in demand in the country music clubs of Yorkshire and the North East.

Rescuing & Re‐homing Dogs throughout Lincolnshire and beyond!

I recently had a hen weekend in London and I was relaxed as I knew Abigail was really looking forward to weekend with Dad and without mum, but as usual, all best laid plans...and of course the guilt kicked in. It was manic phone calls to friends a couple of days before to ‘palm’ our daughter onto friends. Abigail of course took it in her stride, in fact I would go so far as to say that she thoroughly enjoyed her weekend – it’s always full of treats when friends look after her. Time with Mum

and Dad must be comparatively boring! My whole weekend was spent texting and checking she was OK, which of course she was. I thought I would be over any separation anxiety issues, but does this ever go away? I can imagine feeling similar when she is 18! When I returned I was open armed and expecting a ‘mummy I’ve missed you!’ with a big hug and a kiss, the reality was - I received a passing ‘hi mamma’ as she proceeded with her game with her friend. Absolutely gutted, when I had spent my weekend feeling guilty and missing Abiagil so much! The only thing I got out of Abigail was delightfully informing me that the highlight of her visit was seeing a ‘dead’ cat at Ayschoughfee Hall Gardens (taxidermy isn’t part of the vocabulary of a five year old!). All in all it appeared that I had missed out on a fun filled weekend! Still, there’s our family weekend away at Butlin’s to look forward to soon...

(cover and leave overnight to marinate) 2 - Sift flour and spice in another bowl, add ground almonds, sugar, butter or margarine, add beaten eggs and mix well, then beat for about two minutes until smooth and glossy. 3 - Fold in the fruit mixture until evenly blended. 4 - Spoon the mixture into a lined tin, and give the tin a few sharp bangs to level the mixture and remove any air pockets. 5 - Bake in a pre-heated oven 140’c / gas mark 1 for 2hrs 15mins. Test the cake to see if cooked 15mins before the end of cooking time. 6 - Once cooked leave the cake in tin until cold, then turn the cake out. 7 - Wrap cake in tin foil and store in a cool place. 8 - Put some pin holes in the cake and feed with a splash of whichever alcohol was used . (once a week for about 3 weeks)

Moules Marinière

Serves 2 Mussels are great value and there’s nothing better than sitting down to a huge bowlful, and mopping up the sauce with chunks of baguette. Ingredients 25g butter 2 shallots or 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 bay leaf 2 stalks of fresh parsley 150ml dry white wine 1kg mussels in shell, scrubbed and beards removed 4 tbsp crème fraîche handful chopped fresh parsley freshly ground black pepper Method 1 - Melt the butter in a large heavy saucepan, add the onion and cook gently for 5 minutes until tender, but not coloured. Add the garlic, bay leaf and parsley stalks and cook for a further minute. 2 - Pour in the wine and bring to a rapid boil. Add the mussels, all at once, and immediately cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid. Cook over a medium heat, shaking the pan occasionally for 3–5 minutes until the mussels have opened. Discard the bay leaf, parsley stalks and any mussels that have not opened. 3 -Strain the cooking juices through a fine-meshed sieve into a small saucepan. Add the crème fraîche and 1 1/2 tbsp of the chopped parsley and boil for a minute or two to reduce slightly. Season to taste with black pepper. 4 - Meanwhile, transfer the mussels to a warmed serving dish or individual bowls. Pour over the hot sauce, sprinkle with the remaining parsley and serve straight away.

Spotlight on Winsover Road John Cleary from the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society takes a look at this historic road.

The oldest surveyed map of Spalding, the Grundy Map of 1732, hangs in The Spalding Gentlemen’s Society’s museum. It was prepared by the surveyor and drainage engineer John Grundy as his entrance gift on joining the Society. Spalding is shown to be a small town clustered around its marketplaces and open fields close to the town-centre. The major difference from today’s street-plan is the presence of a second river, the River Westlode, running past the Sheep Market to join the Welland. Today the course is marked respectively by Westlode Street, New Road, Chapel Lane, Winsover Road and Bourne Road to Pode Hole and the Pode Hole Pumping Station. This last is the clue to the mystery of the vanished river. In another ancient map, in the National Archives in Kew in London, painted by Monks on parchment about 700 years ago and shown at one of our lectures, we saw a small waterway leading from the well at Bourne

to Spalding Priory via Monk’s House on Monk’s House Lane and St Thomas’s Lane (a source of fresh water for the priory). Following King Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538 this would have been used as a canal for transport to and from Bourne. After The Adventurers drained Deeping Fen in the 1790s they installed powerful pumps at Pode Hole which diverted the waters from the Westlode into Vernatt’s Drain. The Spalding Westlode dried up and was used as a roadway.

line from Peterborough to Boston, and it took two years, 1848 to 1850, to complete. The main function of the new railway system was to move produce to the London markets to command London (higher) prices.

Winsover Road

New businesses were established in Winsover Road such as coal merchants and an iron foundry to utilise the heavy raw materials brought in. In the rail boom years, lines to Lincoln, King’s Lynn and Bourne were built to collect farm produce for onward transport to London. Marshalling yards were also built as a result of this.

In his description of the Parish of Spalding in 1740 Maurice Johnson junior, the ‘Antiquary’, founder of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, says ‘the hamlet of Windsover stretches from the Priory site to Hawthorn Bank’. Thus by 1850 Winsover Road had become a wide straight road with few large houses, probably small farms, leading to open fenland, beyond the town bank.

Now road haulage has taken over this task and the only heavy lorries in Winsover Road are those delivering goods to the supermarkets like Sainsbury’s and Aldi that are built on the sites of the marshalling yard and foundry respectively. The line to Peterborough and Lincoln escaped Dr Beeching’s axe and still takes hardy commuters to London daily.

A Victorian map in our archives also shows us the projected course of the Great Northern Railway and the site of the railway station which would transform this sleepy country lane into the bustling urban space it is today. Five hundred men were employed to build the

Final Thought Thus Winsover has gone from waterway to country lane to tarmac to railway in one millennium. Where next?

Did you know?

Winsover road used to be spelt as Windsover. The quote from 1740 is not a spelling mistake but how the road used to be named!

r e n r o C s ’ t Pe Keeping pets Autumn sound! So we’ve arrived at the heart of Autumn; the air is cooling, the crisp mornings are taking over and the leaves are beginning to turn on the trees. Whilst we wish the summer had continued the Autumn is the perfect time for your pet, temperatures are cooler and the number of sticks to fetch and leaves to bound through is plentiful. But beware! Autumn is also a time of lurking dangers for our furry friends. From household poisons to cold weather hazards, the season is a minefield.

Training tip: If you and your pooch haven’t been active outdoors in a while because of the summer heat, do some remedial recall training. Dogs, like people, get rusty on their skills if they aren’t using them.

Here are some tips to keep your pet snug and healthy during the Autumn months.

Poison The use of rodenticides increases during the Autumn as rodents seek shelter from the cooler temperatures by attempting to move indoors. Rodenticides are highly toxic to pets. If ingested, the results could be fatal. If you must use these products, do so with extreme caution and put them in places inaccessible to your pets.

Pesky children For those of you with young children, while the school term is in full flow you’ll be stocked up on fun items like glue sticks, pencils and magic markers. These items are considered “low toxicity” to pets, which means they’re unlikely to cause serious problems unless large amounts are ingested. However, since gastrointestinal upset and blockages certainly are possible, be sure your children keep their school supplies out of paw’s reach.

23 High Street, Spalding PE11 1TX Tel: 01775 713005 www.rookespetproducts.co.uk 26

Not always a Funghi The Autumn season is mushroom season. While 99% of mushrooms have little or no toxicity, the 1% that are highly toxic can cause life-threatening problems in pets. Unfortunately, most of the highly toxic mushrooms are difficult to distinguish from the nontoxic ones, so the best way to keep pets from ingesting poisonous mushrooms is to keep them away from areas where any mushrooms are growing. Contact your veterinarian or the RSPCA immediately if you witness your pet eating a wild mushroom

A life outdoors In order to generate body heat, pets who exercise heavily outdoors, or who live outdoors, should be given more food during colder seasons. Make sure horses and other outdoor animals have access to clean, fresh water that is not frozen.

Training Autumn is a great season to train your dog or puppy. With the cooler weather, there’s less worry about heat exhaustion, and there are plenty of sights, sounds and smells for you and your dog to experience.

There is no better time than Autumn to practice your dog or puppy’s self-control with distractions. Obedience training is the key to enjoying overall good behavior from your dog, and there is no better time than Autumn to practice your dog or puppy’s self-control with distractions. Scampering squirrels, crunchy leaves, tempting sticks and kids playing ball are all common distractions your dog can learn to listen to you in spite of.

Watch the freeze Many people choose the Autumn as the time to change their car’s engine coolant. Ethylene glycol-based coolants are highly toxic, so spills should be cleaned up immediately. Consider switching to propylene glycol-based coolants— though they aren’t completely nontoxic, they are much less toxic than other engine coolants. Just a few drops ingested and the results can be fatal!

Warning: Antifreeze can be fatal!

Remember, pets won’t be aware of the dangers themselves. They are likely to stumble across these hazards without even knowing their danger. As responsible owners, it pays to be aware of the risks. Simple precautionary measures will keep your furry friends safe and sound. Just the way they should be.

Martial Arts -All You Need to Know It’s often said that martial arts are the best way to shape up and kick your way to a less stressed life. We were tempted at the prospects, so have got the low down for you on some of the various forms martial arts can take. The American Council on Exercise - which sets the standards for fitness worldwide - recently reported that the average hour-long combat-style class burns 450 calories. If this kind of hardcore exercise suits you, there are plenty of martial arts classes to choose from in the local area. But which one is for you?

Karate

The English translation of the Japanese word Karate means ‘empty hand,’ a nod to the fact that karate teaches you to fight unarmed. Karate is a form of self-defense that relies on tremendous power from the legs and abdominal muscles. Most classes last over an hour and incorporate a full range of fitness disciplines from stretching to punching and kicking and once you’ve mastered the basics some sparring with a partner. You don’t have to be physically strong to take up Karate but your strength and overall muscle tone will improve if you keep up with the practice. The emphasis is on speedy footwork and quick reaction time, so agility, balance and co-ordination will also get better as will your cardiovascular fitness. Because Karate is a competitive sport it’s not generally run as a fitness class. However, beginners are welcome at Karate clubs, and if you like it you’ll be encouraged to work your way through the graded belt system.

Ju Jitsu

Ju-Jitsu loosely translated means “science of softness” or “gentle art” and is applied to many schools of unarmed and hand-to-hand combat. The soft grappling style was intended to help unarmed soldiers to fight against armed enemies in any way possible, using the least amount of force necessary. Ju-Jitsu was the primary unarmed combat method of the Samurai. The Ultimate Self Defence, armed and unarmed combat system. Many other Martial Arts are modern day descendents of Ju-Jitsu. Ju-Jitsu emphasizes turning an attacker’s own force against him or herself, putting them off balance. Ju-Jitsu also emphasizes certain grappling moves and strikes to vital areas. A Ju-Jitsu student is expected to learn how to gauge the force of an opponent’s attack and use it against him, evade attacks, use leverage against an opponent and how to attack nerves and pressure points.

The main goal in Ju-Jitsu practice is to cultivate a person’s mind and body: not to use it as a means to vent one’s anger, frustration or emotional problems. The use of force is condoned only in self-defense or in the defense of those who are defenseless.

Kickboxing

Although the true roots of kickboxing date back to Asia 2,000 years ago, modern competitive kickboxing actually started in the 1970s, when American karate experts arranged competitions that allowed full-contact kicks and punches that had been banned in karate. Because of health and safety concerns, padding and protective clothing and safety rules were introduced into the sport over the years, which led to the various forms of competitive kickboxing practiced in the United States today. The forms differ in the techniques used and the amount of physical contact that is allowed between the competitors

Taekwondo

Taekwondo as a sport has over 60 million practitioners in 184 countries. It originates from South Korea where the world governing body, the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), is currently based. The modern form of Taekwondo was not agreed until 1955, but the sport has its roots in various Korean forms of martial arts stretching back more than 2,000 years. The name Taekwondo literally translates as the way of the foot and the fist - tae means to break or attack with the foot, kwon means to break with the fist and do translates as the art or way.

Judo

Judo has its roots in ju-jitsu, which goes back many centuries in Japanese history when is was a brutal and often lethal method of self-defence and unarmed combat. Judo was established as a modern physical activity

by Hayley Willerton

when in 1882; Professor Jigoro Kano founded his Kodokan Judo. Responsible for education he was aware that physical education in his country at that time was sadly lacking. Jealous ju-jitsu masters began to question this system and the matter could only be settled by arranging a tournament between the various schools. This was done in 1886 and the outcome was a totally victorious Kodokan. Japanese police officials had been watching the proceedings closely; they were looking for an acceptable method of apprehending and controlling aggressive law-breakers without resorting to weapons. To them Judo was the answer and it is used in Japanese police training to this day. From that time, Judo schools were established in many countries and the first Judo club to open in Europe, the Budokwai which still operates today, was founded in 1918 by Gunji Koizumi who became known later as “The Father of British Judo”. There are now nearly 1,000 Judo clubs registered with the British Judo Association in the United Kingdom.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi has its origins in Taoism and Martial Arts. Tai Chi Chuan means “Supreme Ultimate Boxing.” At the time of its development, Tai Chi was a very potent art, jealously guarded by a few families and used for self defense. The proper shapes for the transmission of energy, the methods of singleweightedness, techniques of relaxation and breath control all were developed with the express purpose of prevailing in combat in an efficient, scientific manner. It is important for the Tai Chi student to be able to appreciate and understand this martial context even if one is not interested in this aspect of Tai Chi. The other purposes of Tai Chi being physical health, and meditative (or emotional, mental and spiritual) well-being.

Rising Farm Crime Prompts Extreme Security Measures UK farmers are going to extreme lengths to protect themselves from theft as criminal activity on farms increases.

Agricultural theft costs the UK farming industry £48M last year, up from £41M in 2009, with tools, tractors, heating oil and fuel topping the list of targeted items. However, through good housekeeping and robust anti-crime tactics, farms can minimise the threat from theft and more importantly could help reduce their farm insurance premiums by showing insurers that good preventative measures are in place to deter thieves. Ann Hempsall of national insurance broker Bluefin who have offices in Peterborough says, “Our advice to farm clients is always the same: improve your security and never be complacent with what you have in place. Security doesn’t have to be a major expense and through some robust management of equipment and livestock you can greatly reduce your chances of being targeted by thieves. There are also various security firms in operation for increased protection and sometimes this is the best measure. Your local crime prevention officer can also offer effective crime prevention advice. “Thieves will often make repeat visits once items have been replaced especially to farms which have inadequate security. Being caught twice could seriously affect the terms and premiums offered by insurers at next renewal. Insurers may increase premiums or amend terms after break-ins so it is very important that the farmer has made it as difficult as possible for thieves to gain access to steal from his premises. “If a farmer shows willing to reduce the possibility of crime on his farm, insurers could be more flexible with the terms and premiums they will impose at renewal. Insurers generally load premiums and place high excesses on vulnerable sections of a farm; therefore prevention is always the best policy. “Especially during periods of financial hardship, farmers cannot afford continual losses under their farm policies from theft which may result in

32

higher premiums. They should be seen to be putting into place effective preventative measures to deter theft on their farms, as it is the only way to beat crime, whilst helping to reduce insurance costs at the same time. ” Practical hints and tips which may help prevent crime on farms:

• Lock fuel tanks with quality locks or even re-site them in locked buildings • Lock away tools and equipment in secure workshops and tool cabinets with quality locks or grilles or even consider bricking up windows to prevent access • Keep All Terrain Vehicles/Quad Bikes in locked buildings and chained to a solid object. Do not leave them out in a yard on display as thieves with vehicles can easily pick them up • Agricultural vehicles should be put away at night in securely locked buildings and any keys removed • Install CCTV and consider other types of security protection such as infra-red beams fitted across yards or gateways which activate alarms if the beam is broken • Install an alarm system on obvious target buildings, workshops, riding tack stores and offices • Install a lockable bar gate at the entrance to the farm to prevent vehicle access • With farms where there is no house occupancy at night by either farmer or any employees, if tools or vehicles have to be stored on such sites then they should be items which can be replaced easily and with little cost. Isolated farms or those with no overnight occupancy are most likely to be targeted by thieves • Fit tracking devices to vehicles, particularly valuable tractors, so that items can easily be traced and recovered if stolen • Fit immobilisers to vehicles particularly valuable tractors to prevent items being driven away • Install data-tagging on agricultural machinery so if machinery is stolen from a farm it can be identified and returned back to its rightful owner • If possible keep livestock in locked gated fields in close proximity to the farmhouse and buildings • Buy a noisy farm guard dog which always acts as an effective deterrent

home well; get financial help; eat well; get a flu jab; look after yourself and others. Lincolnshire Social Services distributes the guide to its 12 area offices across the county, day centres, libraries, churches, post offices, hospitals, Citizens Advice Bureaux, and to members of the public via home carers. Financial help There are grants available to help you with heating your home - the Energy Saving Trust is an impartial organisation and their experts can offer comprehensive advice on grants available to your home. You can also speak to your energy provider for current deals available. If you are over 60, disabled or on a low income, you may be able to get financial help to heat your home. For more information on schemes like cold weather payments and winter fuel payments visit www.direct.gov.uk and click on the link ‘Home and Community’ and then ‘Help with heating your home’.

You finally decide to switch on the heating, but all you can feel is draughts. Your heat is going out of your home and it feels like your money’s going down the drain. So what can you do?

co.uk) in Spalding explains solar energy:

As the nights get colder, we take a look at how you can keep your home warm – and the heat in!

‘Solar PV (electric) is generated by installing panels on your roof (or they can be ground mounted). The electricity produced is free to use and a payment of 43.3 pence per kilowatt is paid to you directly by your energy supplier just for generating it – whether you use it or not! Any surplus electric is sold back to the grid. As PV works on light not just direct sunshine, it generates even on cloudy days.

Keeping in the heat - Invest in good quality curtains; the thicker they are, the more heat you’ll keep in! - Make a draught excluder. They’re cheap and fun to make - and they will brighten up any room. - Loft insulation. According to the Energy Saving Trust, in an un-insulated home a quarter of your heat is lost through the roof. Now that’s a lot of heat to lose! Laying down loft insulation is a simple and cost-effective step to reducing your heating bills. It’s recommended that your loft has at least 10 - 11 inches of insulation. - Cavity wall insulation. If your home was built from 1920 onwards, it’s very likely that its outside walls are made of two layers with a small gap or ‘cavity’ between them. This means they are ‘cavity walls’. With cavity wall insulation the gap is filled which means it’s harder for your heat to escape through the walls. The Energy Saving Trust state if every UK household that is suitable for cavity wall insulation installed it, we could save around £690 million and nearly 4 million tonnes of CO2 every year! - Double glazing. The two panes of glass trap a layer of air - this layer of air acts as insulation, preventing loss of heat. - Hot water tank and pipe insulation - this is easy to do and it will keep your water hotter for longer by reducing the amount of heat that escapes. - Boiler - is your boiler efficient? Do you need a new boiler? Check out the ‘Heating and Hot Water Guide’ at www. energysavingtrust.co.uk. Here experts will talk you through everything you need to know to make an informed choice whether you need advice on purchasing a new boiler, or help understanding how to decide when you need a new boiler. Remember: get your boiler serviced annually, and regularly shop around for better energy prices - research the market for your gas, electric and oil deals! Solar energy: the facts Phil Newbon from Solar Creations Ltd (www.solar-creations.

How can solar panels contribute to saving money and energy?

‘Solar Thermal (hot water heating) is created by flat plate or evacuated tube collectors being installed on your roof; a special fluid is pumped through the solar collector and returned to the hot water cylinder on a heat exchange basis. A typical install will give mostly free hot water heating from March to September and assist the hot water heating in winter. All new installations are eligible for a grant under the government’s new Renewable Heat Incentive. ‘ Did you know? ‘The name “Feed in Tariff” is slightly misleading as it’s actually a “Generation Tariff”. Yes, you are paid just over 3 pence per kilowatt for selling your excess electric back to the grid, but to generate it you are paid 43.3 pence per kilowatt!’ Log burners & fireplaces When it comes to looking at log burners and fireplaces, there is a wide choice available – whether you want something that’s efficient and practical or a fireplace that’s the centre piece to your home, or both! From wood burning stoves to multi-fuel stoves; from electric fires to gas fires – visit your local provider for some professional advice on where to get started. Awareness Lincolnshire County Council supports the Government’s annual ‘Keep Warm, Keep Well’ campaign, which aims to reduce coldrelated illnesses and deaths among the elderly and people with chronic illness. You can download a copy of their brochure from Direct Gov - simply click on the link ‘Staying Warm in Winter.’ The brochure is packed with practical advice on how to keep warm and well during the winter. You can read more about their top five tips for keeping warm this winter: Heat your

Energy Saving Week 2011 Energy Saving Week runs from 24th - 28th October. The theme for this year is ‘Take back control of your energy bills.’ You can download an information pack from the Energy Saving Trust to find out how you can reduce bills at home and in the workplace. Make Your Own Draught Excluders What you will need… A rectangular piece of material, at least 40cm wide and just a bit longer than the width of the door. No need to buy brand new material - you can use up old scraps to create a funky and fun draught excluder! Needle and thread, pins An old pair of tights Stuffing (beanbag balls, uncooked rice or lentils, old clothes cut up/old tights) What you need to do… 1. Fold your chosen material in half lengthways, so that any pattern your material has is on the inside, and pin it together. 2. Stitch up the length of the rectangle, as close to where the two edges meet as possible. 3. Turn the material inside out so you have a long cylinder that is open at both ends, with the patterned side of the material on the outside. Stitch together one of the ends so your stuffing does not fall out. 4. If you’re using beanbag balls, rice or lentils cut a leg off your tights and fill it with stuffing. When it’s full and just a little bit smaller than your draught excluder, tie a knot in the end. Insert the stuffed tight into your draught excluder and stitch the other end together. 5. If you’re using old clothes and old tights as stuffing (clean of course), you don’t need to put them into the tights as in step 4. Using old clothes is also a lot cheaper than using rice or lentils. Just push the clothes/tights into the cylinder and stitch the end up. With whichever type of stuffing you use, make sure you get enough of the filling into the draught excluder so that it is firm - this will stop draughts from getting through. You can keep your draught excluder simple - or you can get creative and add buttons, ribbons, braids. Children might like to make it into a snake!

Time to De-clutter? We all have clutter of some sort in our homes – some people just have more than others. Keeping your home free from clutter is no easy task but it can be done and it can be maintained.

Living in a de-cluttered, well organised space can help to bring peace and harmony to your home and can instantly improve your lifestyle…   What is clutter? Clutter can consist of many different things. It can be:~ things that you haven’t used for years, but keep hold of ‘just in case’. ~ piles of old junk mail or newspapers and magazines that you ‘may’ get round to reading. ~ impulse purchases that you no longer like but don’t want to get rid of because of what they cost. ~ an expensive item of clothing that you have only worn once, or not at all! ~ old make-up and dried up pots of nail varnish. ~ hordes of empty jam jars that ‘might’ come in useful one day. ~ broken objects that you ’will’ get round to fixing soon. ~ unwanted presents. This list goes on, but basically clutter is really anything that you do not use, need, wear, refer to or like.

and depressing and before long you avoid being there and having people round. Dealing with clutter Tackling clutter can seem an impossible task if you don’t know where or how to start. The first step is to assess the amount of clutter you have. If you are a compulsive hoarder then you may find it easier to call in the professionals. If you just allow clutter to take over specific rooms or areas of your home, then it really is a matter of being more organized and stricter on yourself and your family. Before starting your task, have allocated areas for the items you are throwing/recycling. It will be easier if you can place the items straight into cardboard boxes or black bags labeled charity shops, car boot, eBay etc. as this avoids any opportunity for second thoughts. Start in one room. Allow yourself at least a day. Decide where you are going to start and work methodically. Be sensible and understand that it will take time. With every item that you pick up ask yourself the following questions - Do I need this? Do I use this? Do I like this? As you decide what you want to keep and remove you may go through

different emotions of relief and guilt– this is normal so don’t let it deter you.   Do’s and don’ts Any sentimental items that you want to keep, package safely and securely before placing in the loft. Don’t keep hold of any items that you ‘were’ going to get round to fixing. If you haven’t done it already then it’s unlikely that you will. Don’t feel guilty if you are getting rid of unwanted presents – just let it go! Also invest in a small shredder to help whip through old bills and junk mail. Once you have decided on the things you no longer need, make sure you get them out of the house as soon as possible. Take unwanted items to a local charity shop, or see if any family member or friend wants to take them off your hands. If you want to make some money, go along to a local car boot sale or advertise bigger items in your local paper or community magazine. Benefits The new amount of storage space will be great so stay in control by making sure there is a place for everything and everything in its place. If you don’t, you will soon find yourself back in the same situation. Dealing with

Once you have de-cluttered you will be amazed at the sense of relief it brings. You will feel that you are finally in control of your home again, not the other way around and as a result a more relaxed and welcoming home will appear. And the best thing of all? You will now have a house that almost seems to tidy itself!

Effect of clutter We often find ourselves overwhelmed by the amount of excess baggage we have managed to accumulate over time, and in some cases this can affect how we feel about our home. Living in an unorganised mess can have a diverse effect on how we operate throughout the day – not being able to find a clean work shirt or the car keys when you are already running late can often lead to feelings of stress and not being in control. If you have allowed clutter to build, your home will no longer be the place where you can recharge your battery and relax; it will start to feel oppressive

VW Passat Estate Until fairly recently the estate car was thought of as the ugly one out of the family. It was the unwritten rule that its saloon and hatchback siblings would be better looking. Today that still holds some truth, but not when it comes to the new Volkswagen Passat. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in my eyes the latest Passat Estate is more appealing than the saloon. But it’s not all about appearance because the VW is also a practical, refined, comfortable and economical car to drive. Indeed, the Passat is established as a firm favourite with UK buyers, with over 600,000 examples having found homes here since it arrived on the scene in 1973. The seventh generation Passat is the most advanced iteration yet with every model fitted with special sound insulating windscreen glass and new sound deadening materials to make it one of the quietest cars in its class. As well as an elegant new look on the inside and out the Passat can be specified with Automatic Distance Control (ADC) that can instinctively slow the car to a halt should it encounter traffic. In addition, the VW can be fitted with a fatigue detection system that monitors the driver’s inputs and automatically emits an audible and

visual warning to recommend a break if required. Of course, improving safety in cars is vital, but developing cleaner, greener engines is equally important to motor manufacturers - and VW is no exception. That’s why the German company’s diesel engines are now badged as BlueMotion products (why not GreenMotion?) and they are equipped with battery regeneration and Stop/Start systems as standard. The result is that the Passat, on test here in SE 2.0 TDI 140 PS DSG guise, is capable of 54.3 mpg and emits only 135 g/km CO2. That’s pretty good going when you consider the car is fitted with a six-speed auto gearbox (with very handy flappy paddles behind the wheel). Alright, the 2.0 litre 140 PS (138 bhp) engine isn’t the quickest, but the Passat I had felt solid, well-built and fast enough for purpose. I couldn’t stop praising it when I lifted the tailgate. The load area is vast and it swallowed up everything I needed to chuck in – and more. It’s an ideal car for a family – and as a dad of two young children I felt this might well be a motor I’d choose to buy – if I didn’t already have a perfectly decent Audi A4 Avant. Actually, the Audi I own is a 2003 model and the boot is nowhere near the size of the latest Passat’s!

The VW is perfect for long-distance commutes or short school runs. I never felt tired behind the wheel, despite driving up and down the M6 several times over the week I had the car. And on the short trips to school and nursery the decent turning circle on the Passat came in handy when chucking U-turns in narrow streets. I can’t believe I’ve been so enthusiastic about an estate car. I must be getting old. But, believe me, if you have a family and you’re in the market for a substantial, comfortable, well screwed-together, economical, loadswallower then the new VW Passat Estate is a car to add to your list of test drives.

Oscar’s Outings

With the unusually nice weather in early October we got up early one Sunday morning and headed off to the local gardens. I live on the Wygate estate so it took about 20 minutes to get there and it is lovely seeing the

The cafe offers a real treat for breakfast if you can’t be bothered to cook and they are one of the kind places that has a dog water bowl. Us doggies love that at a cafe, nothing better than after a walk to slurp back some of the cool stuff. This month we also travelled a bit further afield to Houghton Mill. Situated in a stunning riverside setting and full of excellent handson activities for all the family, this five-storey historic building is the last working watermill on the Great Ouse. Flour is for sale, ground in the traditional way by water-powered mill stones too.
