anuary is almost over and Spring is just around the corner, it’s the time for excitement and anticipation as to what the rest of the year will hold for us all. We may not have the Olympics and Jubilee to look forward to but let’s not let that dampen our spirits. Vital lifeline to be set up with £14,400 donations
People in crisis across South Holland will be able to call on a vital service thanks to a cash injection of more than £14,400. The Red Cross charity will use the money to fund its First Call service, which provides companionship and social visits to those in need and helps them in practical ways with chores such as shopping. The money has been donated from the cash kitties of 32 South Holland district councillors – the single biggest donation from the councillors’ designated budgets so far. Each councillor has offered £450 for the cause. Alison Allenby, First Call Service Co-ordinator for the British Red Cross, said: “We already receive a large number of requests for help from people in the South Holland area. Although we try our best to help, without a project worker and local volunteers this is very difficult. We are delighted that South Holland district councillors are able to support us this year in providing a very real and necessary service and look forward to establishing a First Call presence in the area.” Speaking on behalf of the council, chairman Councillor Michael Seymour said: “This will be money well spent as this is a fantastic service. “This is the biggest collective donation made from members’ budgets and shows how the money can be put to good use, making a real difference in our communities.”

Co-op Colleague’s HEART-WARMING RWANDA A handful of staff from Lincolnshire Co-op have journeyed 4,000 miles to Rwanda to see how money raised by the Society has been helping young people set up co-operative businesses.
T
hroughout the year colleagues have been taking part in lots of activities to raise money for two charities; Pascal, a co-operative of Age UKs in Lincolnshire, and Plan UK, an international children’s development organisation. The Society’s fundraising for Plan is going towards a project to help young people pull themselves out of poverty in the poorest regions of Rwanda. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Chief Executive Ursula Lidbetter said: “What is striking about the Rwandan people is how they have found a way to move forward after their troubled past. There was a real sense of positivity, hope and respect. This is a country saying to the world – we want to move on, to welcome visitors, to be proud to be Rwandan and to share our beautiful country with you. We felt privileged to be there.
“The money we raised walking, cycling or dressing up, funds the practical help for these new co-operatives that every new business needs. But more than this, I hope that our visit to these co-operatives lets them know that our co-op, so far away, stands united with them in their collective endeavour for a better tomorrow.” Each year Lincolnshire Co-op raises money for a charity voted for by its members. Local Author Launches Book Number FANCY DRESS FOR CHARITY
Last summer LEBBS was approached by a team of night nurses from Lincoln who decided to choose the blood bike group as their chosen charity of the year and organise a Fancy Dress Halloween Party in their social club.
‘The Hospital Night Team’ are a group of 13 dedicated nurses and health care support workers who cover all the general wards at Lincoln County Hospital overnight supporting staff to care for acutely ill patients as well as responding to medical emergencies. The Team hold a Halloween event each year to raise money for charities related to their work and were delighted this year to support LEBBS as it is a new Lincolnshire charity.’ A cheque for £820.00 was presented to representatives from LEBBS.
Annual voluntary sector conference a huge success
Voluntary sector organisations and national keynote speakers came together recently to discuss the impact of the Cabinet Office funded Transforming Local Infrastructure (TLI) programme.

ransforming Local Infrastructure is a national project aimed at improving services to front line groups, including funding advice services, asset transfer, volunteering support, training and consortia development. Involving Lincs, the voluntary sector consortium of local support organisations, held their annual conference in December at The Showroom in Lincoln. Fiona White, Chief Executive of Community Lincs, a member organisation of Involving Lincs leading on the TLI programme, said: “It was fantastic to bring together the members of Involving Lincs to discuss the work being done to improve services in the voluntary sector. I hope that people will be able to see how the TLI project will have a real impact across the whole of Lincolnshire”.

Kathy Evans, Deputy CEO of Children England said: “I’ve been really impressed by how many people have turned out to show their commitment to working together and supporting each other in the voluntary and community sector in Lincolnshire”.
Spaldonian born and bred, Alastair Goodrum writes aviation history books with a local content. His latest book ‘They Spread Their Wings’ is out now - all about the lives of six airmen born in South Lincs, around Spalding. Alastair Goodrum has held a passion for aviation ever since being taken as a small boy to the 1954 Farnborough Air Show. He spent his career in telecommunications then ran his own company 1995-2004. He held a commission in the RAFVR(T) from 1968 to 1975, is an occasional radio broadcaster and presents illustrated talks on his pet subject. He has previously written Balloons, Bleriots & Barnstormers: 200 years of Flying For Fun and Dying To Fly: The Human Cost Of Military Flying for The History Press and two earlier books on aviation history.

St John the Baptist Primary School in Spalding was delighted to be graded as “good” by Ofsted in its recent inspection. Inspectors came to the school in the week before the Christmas break and found that;

The report also highlights the good provision for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, which was also highly praised in the school’s outstanding Church Inspection which took place a few weeks before Ofsted visited.
The children will be celebrating Chinese New Year, the home corner will be turned into a Chinese restaurant and we are hoping to visit one. The children will be making and eating Chinese stir fry for snack and making a dragon to do some dragon dancing. We will be having pancakes for snack to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. The children will be making cards for people we love for Valentine’s Day and talking about special people in our lives.
Headteacher, Paul Reid, said “We are delighted with this report. The expectations placed on schools is ever increasing and we are really pleased that St John’s hasn’t stood still since our last inspection and that the inspection team recognised that we are a good school with many strengths. In the senior maths challenge, a national competition organized by Leeds University, pupils at the school obtained a total of three gold, 17 silver and 15 bronze certificates. The best in school award went to upper sixth former Callum Gurbutt for the second year in a row, and lower sixth
formers Thomas Beresford-Peirse and Holly Young also gained golds. Head of mathematics Mr Geoff Howes said: “Several of the students have applied for maths at university and two of these have applied for Leeds, so these results will certainly help their applications.”

by Marian Keyes Don’t be put off by the ‘chick litt’ designed cover of this book, Marion Keyes offer’s more to her fans than that. This is her latest in her novels and features Private Investigator Helen Walsh who we see on an economic downturn living back at home, hired to find the elusive Wayne, member of a boyband called Laddz. The race is on to find him in time to appear at a reunion concert. We meet her dodgy ex-partner who has hired her to find Wayne and the new partner the gorgeous Artie who comes with a certain amount of baggage (when don’t they in novels!). However this book is a lovely read to get you cheered in the cold winter months, various reviews describe the book as ‘unputdownable’, ‘enjoyable, easy to read’ and ‘brilliant’ (Amazon.com).

Post Christmas is a stressful time for many people who are struggling with their debts. More and more people every year have trouble making ends meet and covering the most essential household bills. This Christmas, more people than ever before have also taken out payday loans as a last resort.
M
oney troubles don’t go away by themselves, so if you're getting into trouble, act quickly and seek advice about how to deal with it. It is important not to panic but don't ignore it either – it won't go away.
To deal with a debt problem, you will need to: • Sort out how much money you owe. To do this, you will need to make a list of all the people and companies you owe money to. • Work out which are the most urgent debts for you to pay off. Some debts are more urgent than others because the consequences of not paying them can be more serious than for other debts. Priority debts include: mortgage or rent arrears. If you don’t pay these, you could lose your home. Gas and electricity arrears. If you don’t pay these, you can have your supply disconnected. Council tax arrears. If you don’t pay these, a court can use bailiffs to take your goods. If, after this, you still have arrears unpaid, you can be sent to prison. • Work out if you’ve got any money to pay your debts off and, if so, how much. This is done by completing a budget of your income and expenditure. • Deal with the most urgent debts as a matter of priority. • Look at your options for dealing with the less urgent debts and work out how to pay them off. • Contact your creditors and make arrangements to pay back what you owe. • Work out your options if you don’t have enough money to pay off all your debts.

If after you have gone through these steps and you want to seek advice then you should not have to add to your debts by paying for debt advice. There are several organisations that offer free, confidential advice to help you get your finances back on track. And you can get that advice in lots of different ways. If you would like to see someone face-to-face about your debts, you can make an appointment at your local Citizens Advice Bureau. If it’s difficult for you to see someone face-to-face, StepChange Debt Charity offers a free phone helpline 0800 138 1111, open 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday. They also operate Debt Remedy, a 24-hour anonymous online counselling service at www.stepchange.org Alternatively, you can call National Debtline on 0808 808 4000 or visit their website at www.nationaldebtline.co.uk to find out how you can get email advice. the humble chip Lincolnshire is the country’s top potato producer, so what more excuse do we need than to dig in and support national Chip Week, which is in its 22nd year and runs from February 18 to 24 this year.

hether they’re straight, chunky, crinkly or wedges, it would seem that we as a nation just can’t get enough of these delicious potato delights. To help celebrate the humble spud, a program of fun events and activities has been put together by the Potato Council especially for chip lovers everywhere. These include the Choice Chip Awards where you can vote for your favourite chippies, plus games, recipes, quizzes and much more. Coupled with a tasty bit of fish, chips have been a staple of the British diet for years – enjoyed best as a Saturday night supper treat or from the paper while strolling along the seafront.

The classic combination has been a national institution for more than 150 years, coming a long way from its humble roots as a cheap, yet tasty and filling meal for the nation’s poor. But did you know that the delicacy of fried fish came to our shores courtesy of Jewish refugees from Portugal in the 1600s, while the Belgians claim to have invented the chip. What we Brits can take credit for though, is uniting them together. Both 13-year-old Joseph Malin and Lancashire man John Lees lay claim to have done this – the teenager selling them together in London’s East End to help supplement his family’s income in 1860, while Lees traded from a wooden hut in Mossley Market in 1863. Whoever came up with the pairing there’s no disputing it quickly caught on and with the advent of the Industrial Revolution the tasty tucker was soon a firm favourite among the Victorian working classes. By the time fish ‘n’ chips peaked in popularity in the early 1920s there were 35,000 chippies nationwide. It’s hardly surprising then, that as a morale booster they were deemed vital in helping to win World War I and were one of the few foods exempt from rationing during World War II. 21 www.simply-spalding.co.uk SIMPLY SPALDING

And contrary to popular misconceptions the dish is not as unhealthy as we’re often led to believe; for instance a portion of sweet and sour chicken, egg fried rice and two spring rolls actually contains 22 per cent more calories than fish and chips, while an average portion of the latter contains 686 fewer calories than a doner kebab.

If you want to ensure your chips are as healthy as possible, shake and drain them once cooked as this can reduce fat absorption by 20 per cent.
* There are more than 10,000 fish and chip shops in the UK.
Studies have also shown that thin chips contain, on average, more than one and a half times the fat of a thick chip cooked under the same conditions; making fat chips the healthier option. And oven chips contain just five per cent fat.

St Valentine’s Day – the celebration of love and affection - has been marked on February 14 for centuries in one form or another.

oday it’s a multi-million pound, global business with millions of cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts exchanged between couples, admirers, family and friends, in countries all over the world. But what stands it out as the most romantic of the year? One myth associated with St Valentine is that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry, and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. During his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer and legend has it, that before his execution wrote ‘from your Valentine’ as a farewell to her. Others claim the celebration stems from the Roman’s religious Lupercalia festival, held in mid-February to avert evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility. Its association with romantic love grew during the middle ages, when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the poem Parlement of Foules, to honour the first anniversary of the engagement of Richard II to Anne of Bohemia. Moving forward The Young Man’s Valentine Writer was issued by a British publisher in 1797; it contained numerous sentimental verses for the young man unable to compose his own. By this time printers had already begun producing a small number of cards with verses, while a reduction in postal rates in the following century made it easier to mail cards too, and in turn made it possible to exchange them anonymously. In the 19th century paper Valentines became so popular, they were assembled in factories, while fancier versions were made with real lace and ribbons. 23 www.simply-spalding.co.uk SIMPLY SPALDING

Well there are plenty of ways you can still celebrate, should you wish to.... * Treat yourself to a day of pampering – book a spa day, go shopping, rent your favourite film or indulge in your favourite food. If there's a style of music that you hear on the radio that makes you want to get up and move to the beat, then chances are there's a fitness class built around it. There are many different benefits of dancing for fitness. You'll get the aerobic and muscle strengthening benefits, of course. But dance fitness classes can also be a lot of fun. Keep in mind that many people who begin a new exercise program will end up giving up on their fitness goals because they get bored with treadmills and weightlifting machines. That isn't likely to happen with a dance class. Going to a dance class will also get you socialising with the other class members, which can make it much easier to motivate yourself for each future class. But don't be fooled, fitness dance classes are a seriously good workout. The movements may not involve any weights or balls or steps, but they can be extremely challenging.

It's certainly possible to do any of the dance fitness routines at home. You can rent or buy professionally made DVDs or why not pop to the library and see if they have any you can borrow. However you choose to begin, start slow and give yourself a little time to learn the moves. Once you do, you'll probably be hooked! Not all exercise programs are suitable for everyone. Check with your doctor before beginning any fitness program to avoid/reduce the risk of injury.

And to date, I’m afraid I’d have to agree with them. Now, I know Peter is still only ten months old, but he’s already proving to be a lot more easy-going than his big sister. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Nancy’s high maintenance or anything like that, but she’s certainly been indulging in what I can only described as a few episodes of the ‘terrible two’s’ just lately, while in stark comparison baby Peter barely makes a sound. Nancy was a very good baby, but Peter’s been nothing short of model ever since he dropped his bad habits of going to bed at 9pm and waking several times a night! It’s all happened since he’s gone onto solid food - he’s been partaking of two regular naps a day, goes to bed like clockwork without fuss and sleeps through. Already he’s a typical man – as long as his tummy’s full, he’s happy! But I’m not sure whether this has more to do with the fact he’s baby number two and has simply learnt to take his place in the pecking order, or whether it’s down to me being less anxious and more laid back rearing him. Or perhaps it’s a combination of both. However, I suppose us girls should stick together - in her defence, Nancy does have all those raging female hormones to contend with. She’s also well into exercising her right as a female to change her mind as often as possible too – just to keep me on my toes you understand! And now they’re little character traits and foibles are developing, we’re having great fun. Despite their apparent opposite natures they love playing together, which is absolutely wonderful to watch too. Anyway, wouldn’t it be boring if we were all the same?

Honouring the great and good of Spalding and beyond A renowned historian, illustrator and experimental archaeologist is the second person to be honoured with a commemorative blue plaque in Spalding. A special ceremony was held at 22 Spring Street at the end of last year to mark the achievements of Peter Connolly, who lived there for more than 20 years. By Kate Chapman
M
r Connolly who died aged 76 last May, was also an author and was most widely know for his meticulously researched history books on subjects including the Ancient Greeks and the Romans. On leaving school he joined the RAF, after which he trained as an illustrator and published his first book The Roman Army in 1975. He was a great experimental archaeologist too, preparing reconstructions in his workshop to show how things were actually made and functioned.
* Sir Peter Scott (1909-1989) - the conservationist, painter, television presenter and founding chairman of the WWF lived in the East Bank lighthouse at Sutton Bridge for six years during the 1930s. Spending much of his time studying and painting the wildlife surrounding the isolated building, Scott was also an Olympic sportsman and excelled at gliding, ice skating and yachting.
His crowning glory was his work with the Roman saddle, which showed that a man using a saddle with horns instead of stirrups was just as effective, when it had previously been thought otherwise.
* Charles Frederick Worth (1825-1895) - the father of Haute Couture was born at Wake House, in Bourne. He moved to Paris in the mid 1840s, where he went on to take the fashion world by storm, dressing wealthy American patrons, European Royalty, aristocrats and theatre stars.
In 2002 he became the President of the Ermine Street Guard, the number one Roman Re-enactment Society of Europe.
His designs were notable for his lavish use of fabrics and trimmings, incorporation of elements of historic dress, and attention to fit.
Fundraising for the plaque, unveiled back in December, was orchestrated by former Spalding Grammar School pupil Ed Fordham. It is the second to be put in place as part of a program to highlight the area's good and great, being led by Spalding and District Civic Society.
* Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712 -1778) - the Swiss born writer and composer spent nine days in Spalding in 1767, staying at the White Hart Hotel, Spalding, where a plaque to commemorate his visit was unveiled last year. Rousseau came to England, having fled France, where he’d been in danger of imprisonment and violence for his controversial views which had influenced the French Revolution.
"We need to record more famous people from Spalding and highlight those with a connection to the area by having these blue plaques and information about points of interest around the town," explained Judy Chapman, of the society. "We've got a long list of suggestions for more that we're working through and we're always open to more ideas," she added. In addition to this, a plaque to commemorate Spalding born man Frank Pick - the London Underground manager credited with creating what was regarded as Europe's best urban passenger transport network during the first half of the 20th century – is due to be unveiled in the Spring. * Norman Angell (1872-1967) - was born in the Mansion House, Holbeach. An author, journalist and pacifist, Angell was the winner of the 1933 Nobel Peace Prize. He served as MP for Bradford North and was also a member of the Executive Committee of the League of Nations following the First World War. * John Harrox (d1561) - Yeoman Harrox left his estate for the creation of a school in Moulton, following his death. A blue plaque was unveiled on Harrox House - the former headmaster’s home - last year, to coincide with the 450th anniversary of the school.

plain sailing for Boston’s Historic Mill

Having fallen into disrepair by the mid 1980s, Boston’s historic five-sailed Maud Foster Windmill has gone from strength to strength since being refurbished.
T
oday the seven-storey building, located alongside Skirbeck’s Maud Foster Drain - which it takes its name from - is England’s largest, operating windmill. Open for visitors to delve into its rich history, the mill also sells the flour it grinds in an on site shop and provides unique holiday accommodation for those wishing to explore Boston and its surrounding area. Standing 80 feet (24.38m) tall to its ball cap, the beautiful tower mill was originally built to grind corn brought in by barge along the drain. Constructed in 1819 for brothers Thomas and Isaac Reckitt, it was built by Hull millwrights Norman and Smithson, for £1,826 - 10s 6d - a large sum of money in those days. Their partnership was responsible for building several mills throughout Lincolnshire and Yorkshire during the 19th century, and The Maud Foster is now the only complete survivor. The Reckitts continued their business as millers, corn factor and bakers from the site and in the 1820s added a bakehouse, as well as installing a steam engine to supply power to a bone mill where they were ground for fertiliser. But a succession of poor harvests put an end to the brother’s partnership, and they dissolved their business in 1833. Isaac moved to Nottingham, where he set himself up as a corn factor, again with little success, although his next move to Hull, into the starch business proved more profitable. The Maud Foster Mill was then taken over by the Ostler family in 1914, who continued to run it until 1948 when mechanical problems made it unusable. Trade continued for several years thanks to electrically driven equipment, but all activity was eventually wound down and the premises sold again in the late 1950s.
The survival of the historic building owes much to Basil Reckitt, Isaac’s great-grandson. He became aware of the building’s plight in 1953, when he arranged for his family’s charitable trust to finance essential repairs. The building had deteriorated considerably by the time its current owners, the Waterfield family, took it on in June 1987 with the aim of putting it back into working order and to use it. They set about extensive repairs, relaying the floors, installing new trapdoors, grain bins, millstone cases, balcony doors and windows where needed. Three new sails were also made, while the cap, frame and roof also required extensive repairs. A new fantail was fitted and the machinery overhauled too. Work was completed in July 1988, while ten years later two new sails were fitted. The granary was restored in 1989, when plans to use part of it as accommodation were approved. The holiday let is situated on the first floor, up one gentle flight of stairs and is arranged for two adults; features include a king-size brass bed, roomy living space, digital TV and free WiFi. Part of the fun of staying in the mill is that it is a working building, so there are guaranteed to be unavoidable rumblings from the machinery during daytime working hours, but close to Boston’s town centre, it is the ideal base for exploring the market town and further afield.
The mill is open to visitors on Wednesdays, Saturdays and selected Bank Holidays, while its shop sells organic flour, porridge oats, muesli, local history books and a variety of souvenirs. The office says the most commonly-reported are those affecting mobility, lifting or carrying, while the prevalence of disability rises with age; with around six per cent of children being disabled, compared to 15 per cent of working age adults and 45 per cent of adults over State Pension.

history of The story of Warners (Midlands) plc began over 80 years ago when, like many people in the 1920s, Lorenzo Warner found himself out of work. With grim determination and a bicycle with only one peddle he set out to provide for his family by delivering newspapers. The business we know today really came into being in 1958 when Michael came to work for his father and decided to concentrate on the printing side of things. Within 8 years the newsagents business was sold and the money used to finance the now rapid expanding print company.
By 1983 the change had proved so successful that further investment was needed and the firm’s first heat-set 4-colour 8 page web press was installed closely followed by a second in 1985 and then a 16 page heatset web-press in 1989. The company continued to grow not just as a printer but now it also had a fledgling publication business as well and in the late 1980s Stephen and Philip joined Michael.
Today the printing company employs 251 staff and has a turnover of in excess of £30 million per annum. Warners specialise in the printing and production of magazines, brochures and catalogues of quantities anywhere between 100 and 500,000 copies while our sister company, Warners Group publications plc, now employs a further 200 people, turns over £20m per annum and publishes over 30 magazine titles.
The growing company moved to West Street in 1971 and purchased a state of the art Heidelberg Cylinder press and at the time employed 60 people. In 1975 continued expansion saw Michael looking for larger premises, which he found in the form of the old Maltings in Manor Lane. With the relocation came the biggest change in the company’s history with the move from Letterpress to Litho offset and the purchase of a brand new 4-colour Komori press.
By the early 90s Warner’s employed 172 people and had a turn over of £10 million, the company was ready for its next evolution, as Stephen and Philip started to make an impact in their chosen areas. In 1997 Stephen and Philip where made MDs of Warners Group Publications and Warners (Midlands) plc respectively and Michael took wellearned semi retirement as Chairman knowing that he had left the business in good hands.
Since 2003 Warners have invested over £15 million in new equipment and facilities to ensure that they have one of the most efficient, up to date and environmentally friendly plants in the country. The company occupy premises totalling 150,000 square feet on a site that covers 10 acres in the heart of the town and is fully conscience of it’s obligations both to the town and its people and takes it corporate responsibilities very seriously.

The age old question of should you stay or should you go? As families grow we all think of moving to a new home but is it really necessary? Before you pack up boxes and moving it’s worth considering making improvements to your home rather than moving.

For several thousand pounds you could easily fund an extra shower and loo and it will probably add value to your home too, improving the equity levels and in some cases this may even mean getting a better mortgage deal in the future! Extra rooms can be added and put in the garden, over a garage, or at the back of your home if you have the space for less than £10,000 so it's worth considering and chatting through these options with a builder before taking the plunge into marketing your home. When thinking about having any home improvements carried out, arrange for a free no obligation meeting to discuss your project and what you wish to achieve from the alterations. It’s always a good idea to obtain details of all alterations in writing in the form of a contract so there can be no understandings. In particular, I’d advise that you discuss the timescales that each alteration requires as these could affect your daily routines - e.g. electricity and water disconnections, or having to book time off
work. Finally, ensure you allow plenty of time to think carefully about what changes you want to make - your new design needs to meet your exact requirements to fit in with your life. If you do decide to move, you need to try and make the home as easy to clear up and clean as possible. You may only get 30 minutes notice for a viewing, or if you are out during the day and the agent wants to show someone round, the place needs to be really tidy every time you step out the door. It can be tough with busy lives but it’s worth the effort if it means you can sell your home as quickly as possible and for the best price. If you are anything like me, I watch lots of house programmes and the one piece of advice they all give when selling a property is to: Declutter! We all accumulate lots of stuff - toys to games, DVDs and CDs. It's now time to box up what's not required to show off the real space available in your home. Remember, most people can't see past your furnishings and decor, so you have to make the effort to do it for them. Have your rooms lost their purpose? One thing which happens when you have a busy lifestyle is rooms tend to become multi-functional. Dining rooms double up as offices, hallways a space for the bike, the spare room becomes a ‘dumping ground'. That's fair enough when you are living there, but if you are selling, every room must have a clear purpose. Box rooms need to be offices that can ideally be turned into a bedroom in an instant if required. If rooms are big enough to have a double bed, make sure they do, or prospective home hunters will just believe that the room can only fit a single bed. The last thing any child or teenager wants to do is tidy up regularly - unless you are very lucky! So make this as
easy as possible. Easy and temporary storage is helpful so things can literally be ‘chucked in' and put under beds, in cupboards, run up to the loft if you have easy access. Moving the family is tough. So try to make the process as straightforward as possible – from experience it can be worth investing in removal company’s packing service, your home remains as is right up until the day before moving and as they do all the lifting. You are not shattered when you arrive at your new home so you tend to unpack more quickly and get back to normal life. Many even offer an unpacking service too but for me, I like to put things where I want them to go from the start. Have you thought about part exchange if you are trading up? And especially if you are buying a brand new home as you may get a good deal. Alternatively, if you have found ‘the house of your dreams' and you can afford to do so, think about renting the one you currently own to buy a new one and then you can sell when you are ready as holding chains together in the current recession can be a deal breaker. Before you make a decision either way, look at all your options, speak to builders for quotes and estate agents to see what property is available in your budget as well as how quickly they would expect your property to sell.

For tile, you’ll need a wet saw, but a cut-off saw for wood and laminate. A table saw can also be helpful for wood flooring. * Cabinets: Now more than ever before, homeowners have great options for easy-to-install cabinetry that don’t require a team of professionals. Make sure that you’ve got the right drill, drill bits, nails, screws, anchors, levels and supports on hand before you get started - that way you’ll be able to work without interruption. * Worktops: Again, the tools you need will vary, depending on what material you’re using. If you need to cut a material like laminate to size, a jigsaw will be a convenient tool. Sanders and drills are two more items you’ll want to have nearby. * Walls: Whether you’re hanging drywall or simply painting, a ladder will be an essential tool. If your kitchen has
particularly high ceilings or hard-to-reach spots, renting a ladder to fit the task is a good idea. A beautiful kitchen will quickly become a focal point in your home, both for your family and for potential buyers. Citroën DS5 DStyle e-HDi 110 Airdream
This is a fine medium sized car - especially where looks and seating comfort are concerned. It’s just a shame the six speed electronic gearbox blights an otherwise decent drive. I n auto mode my DS5 demo was a bit like a rocking horse sliding downhill. It rocked forwards then backwards every time it went up or down a cog. However, using the automated manual paddle shifts all was well, but that kind of defeats the object of having a car that’s meant to change gear without you moving any body part unnecessarily. While I’m in gripe-mode, I have to say that if you want a vehicle with a bit of a bite, then don’t bother with the e-HDi 110 model. It’s so sluggish – 0-62mph comes in a painfully slow 12 seconds. But, grumbles out of the way, and as I mentioned in the opener, the DS5 is a looker. If you want a French fancy with lots of interior frills and features too, then the Citroën will work for you. The driver-focused cockpit fuses the driving position of a coupé with the finesse of a Gran Turismo. Highlights include a wraparound dashboard and wide central console, whilst a tasteful analogue clock adds a touch of sophistication to the DS5’s interior. LED lighting appears throughout, bathing the controls in an ambient display of intermittent reds and whites. Acoustic treatments ensure a high-quality cabin atmosphere and insulation from road and wind noise is excellent thanks to laminated windows.

FAST FACTS
Driven carefully (and let’s face it, how can you not drive this unhurried DS5 model sensibly?) then it’ll return up to 64.2mpg on an average run. This is partly due to the Airdream model’s Stop & Start micro-hybrid technology that reduces CO2 emissions by up to 15% when driving in congested areas. Other plus points consist of a three year, sixty thousand mile warranty and a maximum five star safety rating.

So, would I pay £24,900 for a dawdling, fluffy, eco-hatchback? I suspect not; but my mind might well change if I get the chance to drive the DS5 mated to a manual gearbox.
