What’s On

Welcome

to the February issue I am always amazed at how many people stick to their new year’s resolutions and then how many people give up after 10 days! How are you getting on with yours? So far I am sticking with mine – to create a better work and home life balance, but we are just a few weeks in so we’ll see how long it lasts! I really do love what I do so being at work really isn’t a chore but then my household jobs can get left! I am so pleased to see the nights slowly starting to pull out, I really am a summer creature and cannot wait for it to be light when I wake up in the mornings. With the doom and gloom of January now firmly behind us, it’s time to start looking to February and hopefully the first signs of Spring.

Hayley x Hello!

Please help the local community stay vibrant by supporting local businesses - and don’t forget to mention SIMPLY SPALDING when calling or buying a product from an advertiser you have seen in the magazine! Without the loyalty of our advertisers we would not be able to deliver such a great magazine to you every month.

Are you all used to writing ‘2015’ yet? I think we will be well into Spring before I finally get the hang of it! I must have enjoyed 2014 so much I’m clinging on to it! February is here and love is in the air – we take a look at food and the role it has to play on Valentine’s Day. Elsewhere we’re looking out for your general health this month with tips on foot care, visits to the dentist and appointments you can attend quickly in your lunch hour such as the optician. So why not make February all about you? Enjoy the issue

New street sweeper hired The latest addition to our bid to clean up the district has been hitting the streets of South Holland. A new street sweeping machine has joined our ranks as part of the Pride in South Holland campaign. The sweeper has been hired for 17 weeks and along with our two permanent vehicles will make sure that as many small towns and villages are cleaned as possible. Recently the sweeping team hit the streets of Deeping St Nicholas, while this week the vehicle travelled to Crowland. The team also headed along the A16, sweeping up roundabouts and traffic islands. Cllr Roger Gambba-Jones, portfolio holder for planning, said: “The new street sweeper will ensure that our team has the resources they need to reach as many areas of our district as possible. “We are determined to deal with all those areas that are blighting our communities and we look forward to making further progress with this in the New Year.” The Pride in South Holland campaign was launched recently to boost eyesore sites in the district and has already made

great strides. The former Bull and Monkie pub in Spalding has been cleaned up and other sites, including the Red Cow at Donington are now being targeted. Over the coming weeks the Pride in South Holland campaign will see local areas spruced up with a range of actions

Air Ambulance Appeal Local man Chris Walton is running the London Marathon in April for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and is looking to gain sponsorship. The Air Ambulance has no public funding and relies on donations. Flying around 1000 missions a year and taking less than 20 minutes to get to an incident it can be at a hospital in just 8 minutes. Being in such a rural area, the nature of Lincolnshire’s roads and the large farming community it is a very important part of the ambulance service. Chris turns 50 within 3 weeks of finishing the marathon and the last time he ran was 25 years ago! He started training in January 2014 and to date has run about 600 miles which has taken 83 hours of commitment. He is looking to raise as much money as he possibly

to ensure the district stays clean. The campaign will also include: Additional cleaning of town centres Community payback service carrying out improvement tasks Re-painting of equipment at play areas New signage and CCTV installed where necessary.

Spalding band’s 50th Reunion Sounds Force 5 were once the most popular band in the area, back in the golden era of the Swinging 60s. Not only were they the winners of the region’s 60s beat competition in 1964, judged by Van Morrison, but they went onto appear at the legendary Barbecue 67, along with Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Pink Floyd. Lead guitarist Rob Munton emigrated to Australia but he is returning to Spalding for a 50th Reunion concert with the band at the South Holland Centre on February 20. Joining Sounds Force 5 for this special celebration will be the sensational Swinging Blue Jeans, who had such memorable hits as Good Golly Miss Molly and The Hippy Hippy Shake.

Tickets for the concert have just about sold out, so hurry if you want to see the memorable occasion. Tickets are only available from the South Holland Centre Box Office, on 01775 764777.

New Taxi Rank A new taxi rank has been set up in Spalding town centre – creating public parking spaces in the process. The new rank, based in the town’s Sheep Market, has space for three vehicles and started operating earlier this month. It replaces a taxi rank in Victoria Street which has been decommissioned and converted to public parking spaces close to the library. South Holland District Council’s Licensing team took the decision following public views that the Victoria Street rank was not being regularly used. Spalding town centre currently has four taxi ranks, which are based at: Sheep Market, New Road (at the Junction of red Lion Street), in front of Spalding train station and Spalding bus station and evening taxi ranks outside Boots the Chemist, Hall Place and outside Broadgate House, Westlode Street. Malcolm Chandler, portfolio holder for regulatory services said: “The Victoria Street rank was rarely used due to its location so by decommissioning it, we have provided back some muchneeded parking spaces for the public. “I am confident that the new taxi rank in Sheep Walk will prove popular due to its close proximity to the town centre.”

New Year’s Honours for Councillors Two South Holland Councillors have been awarded prestigious medals in the New Year’s Honours List. The British Empire Medal has been awarded to Cllr Graham Dark for services to the community in Spalding and Cllr Michael Booth for his services to Sutton Bridge. Cllr Booth (73) has been fundraising for the Market House Trust and the church, both at Long Sutton. He said: “I picked up the post and saw an envelope with House of Commons written on it, my first reaction was ‘uh-oh I’m in trouble now!’ “So it was a nice surprise, a lovely moment, and I feel honoured that the people I represent felt I am worthy to have put my name forward. “I’ve had several phone calls since from people congratulating me which is also much appreciated. “I don’t know when I will receive the medal but I have been invited to the Queen’s garden party in the summer.” Cllr Dark (74) is a volunteer driver of Age Concern ambulances and has run the Spalding Fifty Plus Club for over two decades. He also helps out at a disabled swimming club and recently helped to install a changing room for disabled adults at the South Holland Centre. He has put on six concerts to raise money for Help for Heroes in the South Holland Centre, which has so far raised £34,500. Cllr Dark said: “I was surprised and delighted. It is a real honour and the nice thing is to be nominated by people who have written in and appreciated your work. “Lots of people have already come up to me and said congratulations which is really nice. “I have always enjoyed working on ward matters and getting involved in community projects.” 6 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Antique & Collectors Fair On Sunday 1st February the Spalding Antique and Collectors fair returns to Springfields Event Centre with 100+ stalls full of Antiques, Collectables, Deco, Retro, Vintage, Contemporary Art, Jewellery and watches including a funky collection of SWATCH originals - all items that you won’t find on the High Street! There is ample parking and loading space for larger purchases, on-site catering and easy access makes an all-round good day-out for everyone. “February is a very busy month in the trade calendar” said fair organiser Pollyanne Trapmore-Shaw “overseas buyers begin returning to our shores after the Holidays and Springfields’ location is an ideal stop-off for trade buyers and sellers heading up to Newark and Hemswell” she added. The February fair is again SOLD OUT and due to popular demand a 6th date has been added to the 2015 event calendar firmly securing its position as a firm favourite in trade and visitor diaries.

The fair opens 10-4pm at £2 admission to general public with early trade only access at 9am (proof of id/business card required for early trade admission). Call 01754 811897 or visit www.springfieldsfair.co.uk

Grant Funding Cuts It has been confirmed that the grant South Holland receives from government for the year ahead has been reduced by around 15%. Despite this cut, Cllr Gary Porter, leader of South Holland District Council, has reiterated the council’s commitment to reducing the council tax paid by residents. Cllr Gary Porter, said: “It is disappointing that the grant has been cut by this amount, however we understand that the government has to balance its books due to the state of the economy. “We are determined to defend our residents and ensure this cut isn’t passed on to them. That is why they will see a reduction in the council tax they pay for a fourth successive year. “Back in 2011 we froze and then cut our share of the local tax bill. In 2015 cabinet will recommend that from April onwards we cut council tax again. This means a real terms cut of around 16% for our residents.”

In this edition of Simply Spalding I am concentrating on Holbeach and my role as the County Councillor for The Holbeach Division and some of the work that I have been doing in that division over the past year. A lot of my time in the Holbeach Division has been spent on young people and in particular with the ongoing development of Holbeach Youth Club. A new group of directors and trustees was set up, of which I am one, under the old charity and a newly formed limited company, Holbeach Youth Centre Trust Ltd. The limited company took over the running of the youth centre, which includes a full sized sports hall from Lincolnshire County Council and has just completed its’ first year of operation. We now have a part-time paid youth development worker and a growing number of volunteers ( eight at present), who run the youth club on a Friday evening and in the New Year will be completing one of its main aims – to open on a second evening, which will start on the second Wednesday in January. Our sports hall is fully booked in the evenings, but we do need more bookings during the day – it is still a bit of a hidden gem to the majority of the Holbeach population! We also incorporate a large office which is used by the Careers Service once a week and from January they will be joined by the Citizens Advice Bureau. Our aim is to further develop this area of the building into an IT hub for local business and where young people can teach older people IT skills. Dealing with pot holes and highway issues is a regular part of divisional work, although I have to say the roads in the Holbeach Division are generally well maintained considering the majority of smaller roads in this very rural area are now too narrow for many of the massive tractors, sugar beet lifters and combines that frequent our roads throughout the year. On a more strategic level I have been lobbying for some time for a new roundabout at the junction of the A151 / A17 ( Peppermint Junction) the scene of numerous accidents over the years and a source of constant problems in the town centre, where heavy lorries would rather use the town centre to access the A17 than this dangerous junction.

This has now been highlighted by the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership as a priority in the applications to Government for Growth Deal round 2 funding, ( as has the Western Relief Road in Spalding), not only for the roundabout, but to open up surrounding land for new housing and employment land, much needed in this area of South Holland. I am hoping for some good news in the New Year! Holbeach is at the centre of the agricultural and food industry in Lincolnshire and as such is putting itself forward to be part of a pilot scheme from DEFRA as a Food Enterprize Zone, honing in on the excellent work of the University of Lincoln Holbeach Campus and its’ National Centre for Food Manufacturing. I have spent many hours with the University helping to draw together plans for the future expansion of the Holbeach site and exciting plans to increase the skills of young people who attend the University sponsored Holbeach Academy that sits on the same site, so that young people are retained in the area and see the opportunities for higher skills and higher wages that are becoming part of an increasingly highly skilled industry. More locally I am getting nearer a solution that could see a footpath in Skinners Chase, off Stukeley Hall Drove finally come to fruition after over twenty years or more of petitioning by past and previous councillors and Holbeach Parish Council. Lots of legal issues and finance to overcome, but I believe the end is finally in sight!

Nick

The school were delighted at this time last year to find that they had been placed in School Sport magazine’s list of the country’s top state-funded schools for sport. The magazine has repeated its survey of schools’ sporting activities, of the breadth of sports offered by schools and of the level of participation and

success in major competitions. The list of the top fifty schools has been published and we feature in it - at place 38. There are about 3,500 state-funded secondary schools in the country. Just two Lincolnshire secondary schools feature in the top 50 and we are the only mixed school.

The children enjoyed an exciting last few weeks of the Autumn term with the build up to the Christmas festivities. The infants performed their Nativity play with joy and enthusiasm and all of the children had a wonderful time at their Christmas parties. The juniors also had a fabulous trip to see the pantomime and then put their organisational skills to good use

arranging a games afternoon for the younger children to take part in. Out in the community, Year 6 went to Spalding Baptist Church for “Christmas Unwrapped”. This is always an enlightening event with a retelling of the Christmas story followed by fun activities such as decorating biscuits and performing a special rap. The older children also spent some time at the AGAPE foodbank helping to pack the Christmas food parcels and all of the Year 3, 4 and 5 classes visited Broad Street Methodist Church after designing stars and gifts to decorate two trees as part of the Christmas Tree Festival. The Reception class had a lovely walk into town to visit the butcher, baker and florists as part of their topic work. They had a Christmas cake and drink in Greggs and were delighted with the pine cones and jingle bells they were given in Flowers ‘n’Things. The children enjoyed singing Christmas songs to the shop owners. The School Choir have also been very busy. They performed in a lunchtime concert at Spalding Parish Church as part of a weeklong festival of music to raise money for the

Spalding Parish Church Day School Children in Year 4, at Spalding Parish Church of England Day School, have been sharing their reading views with other children across the country on the Young Writers website. They have enjoyed being challenged to write book reviews for a variety of books. The children were able to write about the plot, characters and the author’s language choices. They were very excited to read their reviews online at www.youngwriters.co.uk and receive a free book title for their hard work! 12 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Church. They also entertained the Christmas shoppers at Baytree on a Saturday afternoon and performed admirably to finish runners up in the competition at the Christmas lights switch on, being presented with a cheque for £250 from Bakkavor foods. The term culminated with the whole school, parents and staff celebrating the traditional service of carols and readings held in the Methodist Church where the Church collection raised £465 for the Ebola Crisis Appeal. As ever, the Spring term has started with a flourish with the children taking advantage of a host of learning opportunities and experiences.

Electronic Cigarettes A New Year is the time when we reflect on the past and try to make changes to improve our health, relationships, work-life etc. A common change is to give up smoking ❱ BY NIKKY RUSKIN, ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH, SOUTH HOLLAND DISTRICT COUNCIL

E

lectronic cigarettes (E-cigs) have emerged in recent years and quickly grown in popularity with smokers as an alternative to tobacco or to those trying to stop smoking. But do they help with quitting smoking? Are there any safety issues with the e-cigarettes and their chargers? Recently a one-year old baby sadly died in New York after drinking from what is thought to have been an e-cigarette refill bottle. It is believed that the child had drunk from a glass bottle containing the liquid nicotine which did not have a childproof cap. At this current time containers containing liquid nicotine do not have to be supplied in child-resistant containers. One of the key concerns of these containers is that the refills are marketed in a very similar way to fruit juices, sweets, children’s bubble containers, inadvertently making them attractive to children. (Details taken from ABC News America). The advice is if you buy and use e-cigarette refills, treat them as all medicines, cleaning chemicals etc. store them out of reach of children and educate them that they are not toys. There have also been several reports nationally regarding e-cigarette batteries either overheating or exploding during charging. In one incident in a private care home a resident died following a fire in her room, firefighters were able to attribute this to an e-cigarette battery part overheating. The overheating/exploding are due to a number of reasons but mainly because consumers may not be using products that are compatible with each other and possibly not reading instructions. At this time South Holland District and Smoke free Lincs Alliance is unable to recommend e-cigarettes as they are currently unlicensed and unregulated. However, by summer 2016 those e-cigarettes classed as medicinal products (make claims to aid cutting down, quitting and reducing the harms of smoking) will be licenced by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency; all other e-cigarette products (no medicinal claims being made) will be regulated by European Tobacco Products Directive. Currently there is no definite, significant 18 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Only use the connectors and chargers specifically provided for use with the battery Don’t buy batteries or other items that don’t have instructions − all batteries must be sold with instructions for use and always follow the manufacturer’s advice Don’t leave a charging battery unattended Don’t exceed the recommended charging time and disconnect the battery when charging is complete Only charge in a location fitted with a smoke alarm and well away from flammable materials, soft furnishings, beds, sofas and carpets. Don’t charge batteries in an unattended vehicle Handle batteries with care and remove from equipment when not in use Replace batteries that have been damaged, dropped or overcharged - they may have a higher risk of fire or explosion. Use replacements made by the manufacturer that produced the device Be wary of low-priced, unbranded products Keep the original product literature for future reference.

evidence to suggest that electronic cigarettes are a successful means of helping smokers to quit. However, during December a report was published by the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews which stated that a review of E-cigarette trials (to June 2014) suggested that they can help smokers stop or reduce their habit. Whilst this news is positive for those trying to use to them to stopping smoking, its worth noting that the results are limited by the small number of trials and the limited sample of participants. It is however, noted that the popularity of the devices have grown and may have helped smokers to cut down or quit. E-cigarettes are not covered under the Smoke Free Legislation as they do not release a smoke, just a vapour. There is no law that prevents people from smoking these products

within public workplaces, however many companies have made the decision to ban them. Each business is within their right to either allow or disallow their customers/employees/ visitors from using e-cigarettes’ within there premise/work vehicle. It is strongly recommended that those businesses that do not allow this use methods to make people aware such as signage, staff training etc. It is worth remembering though that E-cigarettes are one method to help people from stopping smoking, if you or someone you know is interested in stopping smoking, help can be found at http://www.lincolnshire. gov.uk/smokefree-lincs/stop-smoking/ or get support from Phoenix on 0800 840 1533 or Text ‘QuitCompletely’ to 0778 6205128.

Valentine’s Day

Celebrating Valentine’s Day This year why not head to your favourite restaurant?

V

“...whether your preference is a candle-lit sit down meal at an intimate little restaurant or grabbing your favourite takeaway and heading home for a quiet night in, put food at the centre of your Valentine’s celebrations.” 20 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

alentine’s Day is a fantastic day to celebrate. Christmas is long over and the boring donothing days of January have passed so what better way to really start enjoying the year than by spoiling the one you love the most. A massive 1 billion cards are sent worldwide on Valentine’s Day with different countries observing their own traditions. Giving gifts is very popular with every year bringing ever more extravagant options – gone are the days of roses and chocolates, now it is all about driving sports cars on experience days, spa breaks and city weekends. Another popular choice is to go out and enjoy your favourite meal. We are lucky to have a wide variety of restaurants in the area so you can really take your pick – so why spend time slaving over a hot oven when you can take the time to glam up before you head out! You can then sit and relax, enjoying time with your partner while the food is prepared for you and at the end of the evening you can go home and the best part of all, there is no washing up waiting for you or a dishwasher which will need loading! There is an old saying that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and this is as true today as it ever was. We also know that women are very visually driven, so a tasty meal presented beautifully should be win-win! Here are some of the foods most associated with Valentine’s Day, if you’re feeling really adventurous, try and include them all in the one meal! ❤ Chocolate. The undisputed champion

when it comes to Valentine’s Day. As well as a popular gift, who can resist desserts which are full of chocolate? Perfect for sharing (just ask for an extra-large helping!!) ❤ Strawberries. A red berry in the shape of a heart. What could be more romantic?! Associated with the Roman goddess of love, Venus, you could team these up with the aforementioned chocolate for extra impact. ❤ Honey. This sweet food is said to have been served as Mead (honey wine) to newlyweds which is where the term ‘Honeymoon’ could have come from. Honey can be used in both savoury main course dishes and delicious desserts. ❤ Asparagus. A tradition from across the Channel, men in France who were about to marry were served three helpings of asparagus to keep them strong and virile! Used in starters and main courses, asparagus has many health benefits. ❤ Chillies. Full of vitamins and antioxidants, the fiery properties of chillies make them a superb ingredient to really add a kick to a meal. So whether your preference is a candle-lit sit down meal at an intimate little restaurant or grabbing your favourite takeaway and heading home for a quiet night in, put food at the centre of your Valentine’s celebrations.

Making The Most Of Your Lunch Hour Rather than just grabbing a sandwich at your desk and catching up on social media, what can you do to make your lunch hour work harder for you?

I

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

f you work in an office it is very easy to stay at your desk during your lunch hour and either end up working as you eat or doing very little at all. Provided you work centrally and not in the middle of nowhere there are many things you can do during that hour, from both a practical and pampering point of view. If you are more rural there are still things you can do at your desk which don’t involve working!

4) Try and fit in some of those jobs that take up valuable time on your weekend. Drop off or pick up dry cleaning, go to the bank, pay your bills (you could even go for it and do all three in an hour!)

1) Go to the Gym. Half an hour of exercise will leave you full of energy for the afternoon as well as all the health benefits it brings. For the best results have a chat with the trainers at the gym and devise a personalised programme to make the most out of the short time you have.

6) Learn a foreign language. Take it one step further and utilise your computer to learn a new language. Rosetta Stone is a popular choice for learning a language and can be accessed via your computer at work or on your smartphone. There are a huge number of languages to choose from so why not give it a try?

2) Fitness Class / Yoga. In the same vein as the Gym, there are many lunchtime fitness classes which run for half an hour. From aerobic exercise to toning classes and relaxation such as Yoga you can decide how energetic you are feeling before you commit to a class!

7) Mini spa at your desk. Grab your hand cream and eye cream and have a little desk indulgence. You can also take the chance to shape and polish your nails.

3) Appointments. Within your hour you can have your eye test with an Optician, visit the dentist for a checkup or go to the Doctors. Looking after your health is so important so rather than putting it off, do it in your lunch hour and you won’t even feel like you’ve taken time out of your day.

5) Read a book. If you do want to stay at your desk then try not to work. In the UK almost 4 million of us don’t read for pleasure and we say it is because we don’t have time. Well there’s time in the middle of the day on your lunch break – even if it is just ten minutes at a time.

8) Beauty appointment. Saving the best for last! There are many beauty appointments that you can attend which are classed as “express” which usually means they fit nicely around a lunch hour. The most popular include express facials, manicures, pedicures, waxing and head massage. You can also book in to the hairdressers and have a shampoo and blow dry – go back to looking as fabulous after lunch as you did first thing!

Infant Life at Ayscoughfee Hall School

C

Life in the Infants is always varied, busy and challenging but above all it is enjoyable

hildren can now join the school as soon as they reach 3 years old. All classes in school have a maximum of 20 children. We have specialist teachers in the Infants for French, Music and PE. So what is a day like in the Infants? Here are a few recent experiences the children have had and quotes from parents.

“Our daughter has settled into school life very well, she loves going to school and says she feels excited”. The children smile and can hardly contain their excitement as they bring their teddies to school for a special pyjama day! Kindergarten children love the daily ‘show and tell’ and this gives them the chance to share all their favourite bedtime story books with each other. Everyone wears pyjamas including the two staff and two helpers! Children play games and sing lullabies to their teddies. Hot chocolate, marshmallows and cookies are a special treat on this theme day before parents come to collect their children and see what they have all been up to in another fun packed day. Maths money activities today centre on the Knights castle found in the Reception class as young magicians put together spells. “How

“As a family we have been really impressed with the school and would definitely recommend this school to any other parent” many frogs can l buy for my magic potion with 10p?” asks one child. Imagination runs wild later that day as the children compose their spells and start writing their invitations to the ‘Cinderella Ball’ when all the lovely princesses and knights of the class will be gathered for a special banquet. In French children sing songs to practice the names of the colours and of course there is the daily individual reading session when they get to read to an adult, which the children really enjoy. Year1 children enthusiastically talk about what their out of space aliens may look like before all goes quiet and the children put pencil to paper and start their ‘Big Write’. They all work hard on remembering capital letters, full stops and Wow words! Later that day some of the children are designing and building their

own robots from boxes, tubes, bottle tops and anything else that comes to hand! Lego is out for space buggy construction, whilst others put on space suits and blast off in their own spacecraft they have built in the corner of the class! “Science is like magic and one of my favourite subjects of the week” says Charlie. Well it certainly was when Mad Science visited Year 2 recently. The children were full of awe and wonder as Cosmic Kate made water disappear and then explained how! The children learnt all about how atoms moved and had great fun pretending to be atoms in the different states. They saw lots of chemical reactions and loved getting involved in the experiments. Maths is another favourite subject in this class with children eager to learn times tables and gain their next belt in the School Taekwondo Challenge.

“The staff are really helpful and always around if l need to speak to them”

Come and see the whole school in action and see what life in the Infants is all about. You are welcome to join us for our next Open Morning on Tuesday 10th February or book an individual appointment to look around at any time if you are unable to make that day. Please call the school on 01775 724733 to arrange a visit or pop in to collect our new prospectus. 24 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Dental Health

The Importance of Dental Check-Ups How often do you visit the dentist for a check-up? Some go every six months, others when there is a problem. So what do dentists recommend?

R

www.nhs.uk

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

egular dental check-ups allow your dentist to work with you to keep your mouth healthy and to pick up any problems early (or even potential problems!). Many people aren’t keen on the dentist which makes them leave any problems until the pain is so bad they can’t take it anymore. By this time there is often very little the dentist can do by way of prevention. The word ‘regular’ will have different meanings for each patient. Your dentist will gauge the gap needed between appointments. For some it may be a few weeks if you are prone to problems or your dentist is keeping an eye on a particular condition. For others it may be as long as two years between appointments. If you look after your teeth and gums well then don’t be surprised if you only see your dentist once a year or even less! At a dental appointment your dentist will first ask about how your teeth, gums and mouth have been since your last appointment. This is your opportunity to have a discussion with your dentist before you are actually sat down in the chair. Don’t ever feel embarrassed to ask about anything you may not be sure of – dentists have heard it all before and will be able to answer you. And try to be honest with your answers – if you are asked if you floss regularly and you don’t then say so! Your dentist will take the information you give and be able to offer you recommendations about how you can improve your oral hygiene. Once you are in the chair you will have an

“A look on the NHS website will be able to tell you which dentist in your area currently accepts patients.” 26 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

examination of your teeth, gums and mouth in general. If there are any problems your dentist will highlight them to you and will then tell you what needs to be done next. Nothing is likely to be done on that appointment and you will need to book in again to have any necessary work done. It might be that between appointments you have an x-ray to get a better look at where the problems are or you may be prescribed a course of antibiotics should you have an infection. Your dentist may also recommend you visit a dental hygienist. The job of a dental hygienist is to professionally clean your teeth by removing plaque and tartar from your teeth. They will look closely for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and provide other preventative dental care. Your hygienist can also give you advice on how to improve your brushing techniques and show you how to floss well. They also educate patients on ways to improve and maintain good oral health. If you have never visited a dentist then it is never too late to start. NHS dental services are available to all. There is no need to register with an NHS dentist, just find a practice which is near to you (either home or your place of work which may be more convenient for daytime appointments) and call to see if an appointment is available. If your preferred practice is full or doesn’t provide NHS care, this doesn’t mean that no NHS dental care is available locally. A look on the NHS website will be able to tell you which dentist in your area currently accepts patients.

Pets Corner

Create A Wild Bird Paradise In Freezing February February can be one of the coldest months. During this time of year, when frosts are nightly and day temperatures often remain freezing, wild birds need help Frozen Food Food is scarce in the depths of February. Barely any seeds, fallen berries or worms can be unearthed from frozen ground. Birds use valuable body fat searching for a meal, so highfat food to replenish their stocks is in order. Fat-balls, suet pellets, peanuts, seeds, left-over pastry and coconuts are packed with healthy fats. This will guarantee an increase in feathered visitors to your garden. Would You Like Ice With That? Imagine eating nuts and not having a drink! Break ice on bird baths and continue to fill them each day. Deter Unwanted Visitors All year round squirrels will take bird food, but freezing weather means even greater scarcity of their natural diet. Try a squirrel-proof pole in the centre of your garden. Sparrow-hawks will also venture into gardens when it’s cold. Hang feeders near a covering hedge so blue-tits, chaffinch and sparrow feel safe. You’ll probably see an increase in magpies

and pigeons too. The problem with these larger birds is that they eat everything. Discourage them with seed feeders, and spread ground seeds thinly. Spotting Early morning and evening are the best times to spot birds, when they fill up for the cold day or night ahead. Keep cats inside at this time, and minimise disruption in the garden. This will create a lifesaving source of food for birds. Keep filling those feeders though, because a wasted visit will burn fat reserves, and may result in little Bluey not making it through to spring. Freeze Frame... Frosty weather provides great photo opportunities. Wrap up, and sit on a hot water bottle! To create the perfect snap, clear away garden toys and angle your camera towards

frosted greenery. Ground-feeders such as robins will do almost anything for mealworms. Throw a few near your bench and get ready. You probably won’t even need the zoom! February’s cold weather encourages birds to huddle for warmth, and they follow one another to food sources. Wrens are especially prone to flocking in cold weather. This is good news for a budding wildlife photographer! Here’s a tip...for the perfect valentine’s day photo, roll up sheets at nightfall, create the shape of a heart on your grass, and when you pick them up in the morning you’ll have a gorgeous heart shape. Snap a robin in that and you’ll have a photo to keep for life. It’s hard for birds caught in February’s chill, and it doesn’t cost a lot to feed them. Why not help birds out? It’ll give you more pleasure than you think.

Dorset Carpentry & Building Your first call for all aspects of Carpentry and Building “Simon and his team are able to provide everything you need for your project. He has high standards and that is reflected in his choice of tradesmen who work with him.”

A

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

t the beginning of the year many people start planning their home improvements for the year. It might be something simple as a new coat of paint or some remodelling or major work such as extensions and conversions. Ranging from a few hundred to thousands of pounds it is important that you have the right people doing the job. Based in Spalding, Dorset Carpentry & Building have been trading for 10 years and during that time have been fortunate enough to have never had a quiet period. Owner Simon Twelves, who has been qualified for just over 19 years has a wealth of experience to bring to your project. He is proud of the company’s reputation and the fact that much of his work comes through recommendation. He is also proud of the sheer amount of services he is able to provide “We are able to help with all aspects of carpentry and building – extensions, kitchens, conversions, garden work and bespoke building such as car ports and outbuildings.” Simon and his team are able to provide everything you need for your project. He has high standards and that is reflected in his choice of tradesmen who work with him. “The people who work with me on projects are fully qualified and always hold the relevant certificates for electrics and gas work.” Whilst most of the work is for private homes, Simon is more than happy to quote for commercial projects. Distance is also not an issue as Dorset Carpentry & Building cover the whole of Lincolnshire (and beyond if required!). If you are considering having some work

done to your home or business then please get in touch to arrange a visit or have an initial chat about what you might like to do – no project is too big or too small and if you don’t know where to start then don’t worry, with almost 20 years in the business Simon will be glad to point you in the right direction. Focus on Spalding

Spalding Round Table A great way to meet people, make friends and help worthwhile causes...

B

“If you’re interested in joining, or just want a free pint on a Monday night, then get in touch with the Table.”

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

In September 1953, Spalding Round Table was formed and since then they have been meeting twice a month to take part in new & interesting activities, make friends locally, nationally and internationally and have a positive impact on the local community 61 years on, the Spalding & District Round Table is one of the strongest tables in the country with 18 members. However, despite their successes and continued fundraising, Round Table is still a well kept secret within the town! So what is it all about then and how can you get involved? Round Table is the largest voluntary organisation for young men in Great Britain and Ireland. There are 600 tables across the country with over 8000 members in total. The Round Table roundel or ‘The Dartboard’ is a medieval reproduction of King Arthur’s Round Table, however, there is no medieval ancestry! In actual fact, the name comes from a speech that the then Prince of Wales made in 1927 to the British Industries Fair: “The young business and professional men of this country must get together round the table, adopt methods that have proved so sound in the past, adapt them to the changing needs of the times and wherever possible, improve them”. The Spalding & District Round Table currently has 18 members who meet every other Monday night to socialise and try different things from 4x4 driving and brewery tours to horse riding and raft building as well as helping out good causes within Spalding and the local vicinity. They are also twinned with the Round Table in Speyer (our town twin city) and take part in exchange visits. 10

of the Tablers also competed in a 45 strong team from Lincolnshire in Winchester (the location of the original Round Table) at the national Sporting Weekend where they came 3rd overall from all the Tables in the UK. For the past 21 years the main avenue for fundraising is a boxing event held at Springfields, which has seen the likes of Frank Bruno, John Conteh, Henry Cooper and George Groves attend as guest speakers. On the night 8-12 bouts of boxing between the home team of the Police Community Club of Great Britain and this year The British Army’s boxing team. This year’s event on the 21st February promises to be yet another memorable occasion as its the night where they hope to surpass the £200,000 mark of money raised. Some of the recent funds raised have support such causes as; Z A motorbike for the Lincolnshire Blood Bike Service Z Significant donations to the air ambulance Z Bladder scanner donated to Johnson Hospital Z Football Kit to Bourne Juniors FC

If you think you have a worthwhile cause that you would like some fundraising support for, then it is worth contacting your local Round Table. If you were to ask any member why they joined you will hear many different reasons. Whether you have moved to a new area or just want to expand your social circle, it is a fantastic way to meet new people and build strong friendships, whilst making a difference locally. If you’re interested in joining, or just want a free pint on a Monday night, then get in touch with the Table. You can go along to one of their regular meetings, get to know some of the current members and find out a bit more about it. Upcoming events include trip to a Climbing wall, brewery tour, ten pin bowling and of course the Boxing. http://www.spaldingroundtable.co.uk Twitter: @SpaldingRT428 32 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Looking After Your Feet With everything we put them through, looking after your feet should rank highly amongst your daily routines

O

ur feet really do deserve a little love – we tend to give them more attention during the summer months when sandals show them off but we should care for them all year round. The NHS recommend that we wash our feet before bed and dry them well to to ensure they are clean. If you are able they also recommend the removal of hard skin with a pumice stone or foot file and that you regularly cut your toenails. Having mentioned summer above It should be noted that they also ask you limit the wearing of flip-flops during the season as they offer very little support for your feet. See if you can tuck that away and remember it in a few months!! Many foot complaints begin with wearing ill-fitting shoes. If you wear shoes which do not fit properly your feet will suffer – as a cause it is up there with walking on hard surfaces and standing still for long lengths of time so it really does pay to take a little time when buying new shoes. Firstly, and most importantly, make sure they fit properly. The ideal pair of shoes should have half an inch gap between the ends of your toes and the ends of your shoes. They should fit snugly both at the heel and the instep. Make sure they are wide enough. If your feet are prone to swelling then buy your shoes in the afternoon as this is when your feet will be at their largest. If you are unsure then ask the staff at the shop you are buying from as they will have been trained in measuring feet and will be able to offer advice on the brands of shoe which will fit you best.

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN If you do find yourself feeling discomfort with your feet then get them looked at sooner rather than later. Here are some of the more common foot complaints: Corns - Corns are caused by pressure or friction over bony areas, particularly over the joints, the ends of the toes and under the feet. Calluses - These are also caused by pressure and friction but can grow over any bony area. Bunions - Bunions are a deformity of the big toe joint. They produce an enlarged joint which can be painful and make walking difficult. Heel Fissures - Characterised by torn and cracked skin around the heel, fissures are caused by hard, dry and flaky skin. Ingrowing Toenails - A painful condition, ingrowing toenails are caused by ill-fitting, over tight footwear or by cutting your toenails too short. Verrucae - A verucca is a wart on the foot (and something which we all remember from childhood!). It is caused by a virus and so can spread and get bigger if it is not treated. Athletes Foot - A contagious fungal infection which can be spread by clothing, towels or floor coverings in bathrooms, swimming pools and showers. Chilblains - These come about as a result of poor circulation in cold and damp weather. If you have any of these conditions or are in any kind of discomfort then speak to a chiropodist who will be able to treat or give advice on the best course of action for you.

“The ideal pair of shoes should have half an inch gap between the ends of your toes and the ends of your shoes.”

fter 10 years as a franchise we have now become an independent lawn care company, and we will continue to serve our existing customers in the Spalding and Holbeach areas. We pride ourselves on being a little different to other lawn care companies. We are free to use whichever suppliers we choose, and as a result have many more options available to us.

What do we do? We will come and carry out a free survey of your lawn. Once we have checked a few things we will be able to give you a firm quote for a programme of treatments. You are, of course under no obligation to accept and we don’t use hard sell techniques. We do not try and sell you what you don’t need and we don’t do gimmicks, just honest and sustainable cost effective lawn care. There is no contract to sign, just tell us if you no longer require our service. If you agree then we can start as soon as possible.

Looking after the soil is one of our primary

3 2 3objectives. We know that the soil is the single most important

c o . u kfactor in determining how good your lawn looks.

Soil types vary hugely from the really sandy loams to clay. Soil should be teeming with biological life, such as beneficial bacteria and fungi. It is these that we need to keep the soil balance correct and everything working as it should. It is these that we rely on to breakdown organic matter such as thatch. In some soils the bacterial elements don’t work as effectively as they should, sandy soils for instance because they drain too quickly during the summer months. This is why we use natural soil stimulants such as humic and fulvic acids, seaweed etc. We can even add live beneficial bacteria and fungi to our fertilisers to further boost the microbe levels.

Thatch Does your lawn feel spongy to walk on? It shouldn’t. It is likely that the thatch level is too high, and has been fed with the wrong products. Thatch is a layer of tightly interwoven redundant stems and roots (see photo) that should be broken down by the biology in the soil. In a perfect situation thatch should be broken down as fast as it forms. I many cases this does not happen due to damage to the biology, and so the thatch builds up unchecked. This build up can lead to all kinds of problems such as moisture and air not reaching the roots. If the thatch level is too thick then the grass is probably going to die at some point through drought stress.

“We know that the soil is the single most important factor in determining how good your lawn looks.”

Scarifying and aeration These are both tasks designed to reduce and breakdown thatch levels. Scarifying is a vertical cut which penetrates the thatch layer and reduces the levels. Aeration is designed to bypass the layer by introducing channels so that air and moisture can once again penetrate. Both of these tasks have a major impact on removal and control of moss, which can flourish where the grass is weak, and has little defence. Car Maintenance

Driving in Winter The worst thing that can happen on a journey in winter is for your car to break down. With a little maintenance beforehand you can ensure a hassle-free winter in your car

A

ccording to the AA, the number of breakdown callouts they respond to doubles in the winter – they are so busy during this season that they have to put on extra patrols. There is also a large increase in the amount of accidents on the roads when the weather is snowy or icy. When temperatures are low it is especially important to perform some routine checks on your car to do all that you can to stay safe. During winter, when the days are short, coming home from work will often mean a journey in the dark. On these types of journeys lots of pressure is put on the car battery as the heater, lights and windscreen wipers may all be working at the same time and the car isn’t making a long enough journey to give the battery sufficient charge. If your weekend journeys are light then an overnight trickle charge on the weekend will give the battery a chance to recharge. Antifreeze is also very important during the winter. Without it you could find yourself hundreds of pounds out of pocket to repair a frozen engine. The amount of antifreeze needed varies from vehicle to vehicle so check your handbook or take your car along to your local garage and they can do it for you. Make sure your wiper blades are in good condition, firstly for when you have to defrost your windscreen in the mornings but also your windscreen gets dirty very quickly in the winter and so you need to be in a position to clean it quickly and well. Reduced visibility can be very dangerous and quickly lead to accidents. Along with good wipers check you have enough screenwash for your journey and that it will not freeze. Have a look at the label – most good quality screenwash will have protection to at least -10 degrees.

40 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

For long journeys it is advisable to make yourself up an emergency kit so if the worst should happen you will be prepared. In the kit you should have the following items: • Jump start cables • Warm clothes and blankets • Wind up torch • Ice scraper and de-icer

• Mobile phone charger • Reflective Warning Sign • First Aid Kit • Emergency Food and Drink

A trip to the garage or even the petrol station to check the pressure on your tyres as well as the depth of the tread can literally be lifesaving. Your car’s manual will give you the correct tyre pressures for your front and back tyres and air is usually free at the petrol station and garage. The minimum tread depth for your car’s tyres should be at least 2mm but at least 3mm is recommended during winter. When you check your tyre tread have a good look at your tyres to make sure there is no damage to them.

“Make sure your wiper blades are in good condition, firstly for when you have to defrost your windscreen in the mornings but also your windscreen gets dirty very quickly in the winter and so you need to be in a position to clean it quickly and well.”

FIAT 500 S

T

They say “small is beautiful”, and the petite FIAT 500 is no exception to that much used turn of phrase

he revised car went on sale in the UK in 2014 with new style, comfort and technological enhancements. A fresh feature is the seven-inch digital instrument display, which combines cuttingedge technology without disrupting the trademark aesthetics of the cabin. Standard on the 500 S 0.9i (105ps) TwinAir model, on test here, the centre of the instrument display can be configured to show various trip computer readouts, such as distance travelled, instant fuel consumption and range. In addition, the screen reconfigures when the Sport button is activated on the 103bhp powered car. The ‘eco’ gauge, which measures how efficiently the FIAT is performing in real time, transforms into a turbo-boost gauge, emphasising the dual-personality of

42 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY the fun-but-frugal engine. I did feel slightly annoyed when I first climbed into the FIAT and slammed my knee against the centre console, but I’m a six foot tall chap and it’s a small car. What did I expect? Well, I didn’t anticipate it to be so lush inside – that’s for sure. The funky cabin soon made me forget about my aching knee. Actually I completely forgave the 500 S for causing me pain once I started her up. On the move, the feisty Italian is a genuine giggle to drive because the TwinAir engine is ‘rev-happy’ with a decent amount of ‘go’, thanks to the turbo bolted to it. Top speed is a surprisingly fast 117mph and 0-62mph takes 10 seconds. This is more impressive than some 1.2 and 1.4-litre four cylinder petrol engines. The ride can be a little too firm over bumpy surfaces and this causes handling to become slightly jittery, but other than that the FIAT 500 S does a great job. It’s actually more practical than I thought it would be too. The rear bench takes two child seats without any problem, and when my wife borrowed the car to take our toddler to nursery she raved on afterwards about how easy it was to manoeuvre in the manic crèche car park.

Reassuringly, the FIAT 500 range achieved a maximum five-star rating in the gruelling Euro NCAP crash test safety programme. When it accomplished this, it was the first time that a car of such compact dimensions, (3.5 metres in length), had achieved a top ranking, and astonishing that a vehicle of its type had been equipped with seven airbags as standard. In fact, the FIAT 500 S offers general levels of equipment more usually associated with cars of a far higher segment, with anti-lock braking, remote central locking, electric front windows and door mirrors, as well as electric power steering. The car also has mobile phone connectivity, air conditioning, 16 inch alloy wheels and a very useful 50:50 split/folding rear seat with head restraints. What’s more, the FIAT 500 personalisation programme offers a range of over 100 bespoke accessories which, generating more than 500,000 possible trim, colour and option combinations, gives you the opportunity to personalise the model in ways you never thought possible! At just £13850 on the road for this particular 500 S variant, you really can’t go far wrong if madcap, funky motoring is your cup of tea.
