Art in the Barns – A new Arts and Craft Event for Spalding An opportunity to see and experience a wide range of art and craft activities Unique Cottage Studios, a not for profit art and craft organisation near Spalding, have announced an Open Weekend to be held on 26/27th April 2014. The event, entitled “Art in the Barns” will be held at the Studios in Fulney Lane South, Spalding PE12 6FA and entrance will be free. Visitors will be able to see and experience a wide range of arts and crafts including textiles, pottery painting, stained glass, pottery, drawing and painting, mosaics and photography. The new cafe will be open for those wishing to have lunch or perhaps

Householders feel the benefit of council’s energy bill switching scheme Many householders who signed up for South Holland District Council’s latest collective switching scheme can look forward to substantial savings on their energy bills. More than 85% of those registered will be offered a saving, with average savings varying between £12 and £315 depending on the type of energy and billing. As collective switching schemes become better known, they are attracting a mix of ‘Big Six’ and smaller independent suppliers to bid for the group. There were four ‘winners’ in this auction who will supply a range of contracts: Ovo Energy, Scottish Power, newcomer Green Star Energy and British Gas. A council spokesman said: “Households will soon receive their personal offer letters or emails telling them if they’ll be saving against their current deal – and if so how much money will be going back into their pocket. “At a time when many energy companies have increased their prices this is a welcome opportunity for households to see if they can make savings.” There is no obligation for people to accept their personal offer, but if they do it’s easy and straightforward and the council will oversee the free switching process. For households that missed out this time, there is no need to worry, as the next auction will take place in June. People can register their interest at the district council’s offices in Priory Road, Spalding, or online at www.sholland.gov.uk A similar switching scheme is also available for SMEs. Register via the district council’s website.

sample some home-made cakes. Commenting on the event, Carolyn Goodwin, the founder of Unique Cottage Studios said, “The event is being held to celebrate the opening of our cafe and two new studios. We are very proud of the facilities and are delighted that more and more people are coming to our classes and workshops.” An open art competition is being held in conjunction with the Open Weekend. Details can be seen on the Studio’s web site www. uniquecottagestudios.co.uk and entry forms can be obtained by e-mailing info@uniquecottagestudios.co.uk or collected from the café.

More car parking spaces provided at Spalding leisure centre

Demand for parking spaces at Spalding’s leisure centre has been eased with a £10,000 investment. Members said that lack of car parking spaces was an issue and the Castle Sports Complex has responded by creating room for 15 more vehicles. The move follows an increase in users of the dry side of the Albion Street leisure centre, which is leased from South Holland District Council and managed under contract by nonprofit making organisation Leisure in the Community.

Richard Johnson, contract manager of Castle Sports Complex, said: “After members were having issues with parking, we have been working with South Holland District Council to improve the car park and we knew we needed to extend it, especially with the increase in new members. “Here at Castle Sports Complex, we always try and take the members concerns into consideration and hope they are pleased with the new facilities.”

Council supports community-led housing scheme South Holland District Council has played a key role in supporting the delivery of a community-led housing scheme in Pinchbeck. The development, which is owned by the Pinchbeck Community Land Trust, will provide 14 new homes to rent for local people. Work on site in Flaxmill Lane is due to begin soon and be complete by the end of this year. Pinchbeck Community Land Trust (CLT) bought the land from Pinchbeck Parish Council and will work in partnership with Lincolnshire Rural Housing Association, which has a 125year lease on the site. The mix of two and threebedroom homes will have an allotment area and is expected to benefit from a communal biomass heating system. The £1.4million scheme has been funded by a Homes and Communities Agency grant and private borrowing by the housing association. Pinchbeck Parish Council has also played a vital role in helping to get the scheme off the ground. Cllr Christine Lawton, South Holland District Council’s portfolio holder for Housing Landlord, said: “We’re very proud to have such an innovative scheme here in South Holland. “It fits well with our council’s priorities of local housing for local people and increasing

supply of good quality, affordable housing. “It’s good to see a community-led project such as this in action and I look forward to seeing the homes completed and families enjoying living in them.” Pinchbeck CLT is a non-profit, community based organisation run by local volunteers and says its modest income will help benefit other projects in the village. Steve Colby, chairman of the trust, said: “Since our formation in May 2012, we have had considerable help and good advice from John Mather, of Lincolnshire Community Land Trust, who has been our mentor. “We have liaised closely with the parish council and the district council with the desire to produce attractive homes for rent to Pinchbeck families well in to the future and we trust Westleigh Partnership Homes to deliver the goods.” The district council’s strategic housing manager Matthew Hogan said: “We have supported a very innovative method of delivering a housing scheme. “Anyone interested in living in the homes needs to apply through the district council’s housing register.” To speak to the district council’s Housing team, phone 01775 761161.

Sainsbury’s School Games inspires hundreds Hundreds of school children in Lincolnshire have been inspired by sport after competing in a multi-sport event at Grantham Meres Leisure Centre. Approximately 650 children from 80 primary and secondary schools took part in six sports and a total of nine different competitions and one inclusive event on a bumper day of action, health and wellbeing. Schools teams, ranging from age 8 to 18, competed in a variety of sporting competitions including badminton, basketball, hockey, netball, new age kurling and swimming. Winning schools who placed first in their sports included Saxilby Primary School, Haven High Academy, Caistor Yarborough School, St Georges Academy, Spalding High School, William Farr School, Tower Road Primary School and St Hugh’s Primary School. London 2012 Gold Medallist Tim Baillie was among the attendees at the Sainsbury’s School Games 2014 Winter Festival on March 5, through his work with Sporting Champions. He provided inspiration from his past experiences in the Olympics. Tim said: “It’s so important that we inspire young people and ensure they know the importance of sport and physical activity. It takes a lifetime of hard work to become an Olympian and I try to advise children that passion, enthusiasm and being the best you can be are the best qualities to have in sport and when competing. Today has been an inspirational day and it is great to see such a wide range of sports taking place.”

Dina’s three little pigs painting wins exhibition’s public vote

Three piglets peering over a fence helped the winner of the 14th South Holland Open Arts Exhibition gain the most votes. Dina Perejogina is a passionate wildlife artist and her painting of the piglets from Pigeons Farm, Thorney, topped the public poll. Dina (37), of Spalding, was fortunate enough to have three pieces

selected by the judges to be displayed in the exhibition. And she took first and second place in the public’s appreciation. “It was the first time I had entered my work for the exhibition – a friend gave me a leaflet and told me I had to!”, said Dina. “I love painting wildlife and trying to capture the characteristics of animals.” For the first time, there was a small award for the public vote winner and Dina was presented with the plaque by Cllr Nick Worth, South Holland District Council portfolio holder for Community, and Rachel Rowett, the district council’s arts and culture development officer, who organised the South Holland Centre exhibition. Cllr Worth said: “Dina’s painting is a brilliant piece of work and she’s clearly very talented. “The standard of art in the exhibition was again very high and the event remains a popular fixture on our arts calendar.” Open to all amateur and professional artists aged 14 or over with a link to South Holland, the number of entries to the exhibition was up this year. More than 80 pieces of work were selected to be displayed.

Local Optometrists Children’s Campaign gathers momentum 18 months into a campaign to protect childrens` eyesight, Molsom Optometrists of Spalding are delighted to announce that they have helped 600 more children to enjoy learning. They are also half way through the 2014 scheduled School Visits programme in Spalding. The team are delivering interactive lessons about our eyes to reception children, where Sidney the Teddy Bear has his eyes tested. Sidney gets to wear some really funky glasses, play some fantastic games, and marvel at optical illusions. According to Andy Molsom “The children love it, and were really engaged asking some intriguing questions”. Andy Molsom says, “Regular eye examinations are crucial for children, especially as there is no formal school screening programme in Lincolnshire. My daughter has been wearing spectacles for the past year, she was struggling a little at school but since wearing her glasses, she loves going and enjoys reading and maths!”

Key Points regarding children’s eyecare • Children’s eye exams are FREE. • Children are never too young to have their eyes checked. • Taking children to have an eye exam is just as important as a trip to

the dentist, or having their feet measured. • Good vision during a childs early years can help them fulfil their academic potential. • It is estimated one in five school aged children (about 1 million children) has an undetected vision problem that could restrict their ability to learn, read, write and spell. • Signs to look out for Difficulty concentrating, thus avoiding close work tasks • Behavioural problems • Headaches • Rub eyes frequently • Difficulty with hand-eye coordination

Monkshouse School Nursery The children in the Nursery have been very busy this term as we have started to think about people who help us as well as how we can help others. We have had visits from a local fire fighter and PCSO, both of whom told us a little bit about the work they do and then let us try on some of their uniform. We then used this information in our role play and have been very busy responding to the emergencies such as rescuing

cats, finding lost property, controlling the traffic, but best of all putting out the fires (especially when we ‘found’ some water for our hoses and were given water pistols as well). We also found out about the Chinese New Year celebrations. We made decorations and puppets as making up our own dragon dances. We also tried some Chinese food, but we used spoons and fingers as the chopsticks were a bit too tricky.

Surfleet Primary School March and April have been a very busy time in school for us all. We’ve had World Book Day, where all the children dressed up as their favourite book character. They all looked great and the teachers enjoyed dressing up for the day too! We held a PE day with different sporting activities held throughout the day. It was lots of fun. Our Mother’s Day Service was held at St Laurence’s Church. The children presented their Mums with a

bunch of daffodils during the service. Achievement Assembly was held before we broke up for the Easter holidays. The children have worked extremely hard this term – well done all of you. The last day of term we had an Easter Bonnet Parade and miniature garden where parents could come to watch. Prizes were handed out for the best decorated. May we take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Easter!

Wisbech Grammar School

Weston Hills CofE Primary Year 5/6 took part in a Volleyball tournament organised by Agilitas, and had a great day – they really enjoyed the competition against other local schools. They will also be attending a Y5/6 Cricket tournament at the Grammar School in May. Our Year 3&4 children will be attending a Tennis Tournament at Spalding High School. Good luck to them all! We attended a Dance Showcase at the South Holland Centre – the children performed two routines and were a credit to the school this is always a very enjoyable event. We took part in Sport Relief in March raising money for this worthy cause. Children in Class 5 attended “Easter Cracked” at the Baptist Church in Spalding. They took part in a quiz, made Easter Cards, listened to the Easter Story and had an Egg Hunt. Another lovely morning! Class 2 will be organising

12

their Collective Worship for the beginning of April – these are always well attended by parents/carers, and will centre around their topic work for the term. Tempest will be coming into school in Term 5 to take class photographs, and May also sees Key Stage 2 SAT’s taking place. The PTA have again been very busy organising a Bag2School event, Mothers Day Wrap (where children purchased gifts for mum/ granny, etc.), as well as School Discos. They have also organised a “Loose Change Challenge” - giant Coca Cola bottles are in each class, and children are bringing in any loose change and are filling them up – this fundraiser will run until the beginning of July! Our extra curricular activities this term include a Book Club, Chess, Homework, Taiko, ICT, Choir, Multi Skills, Rounders, Tennis, Change4Life, Volleyball & Dance.

A melodious line-up of contenders turned up the volume when they took the stage for the annual house music competition at Wisbech Grammar School. More than 200 pupils from the school’s four houses took part in the choral and instrumental contest, which attracted a total of 500 students and parents who were treated to a broad range of numbers ranging from Purcell to popular modern classics. A vibrant rendition of ‘Livin’ on a prayer’ by a massed choir from Clarkson house helped it to lift the overall winners’ prize, and along the way musicians from Clarkson, with their rendition of ‘You’ve got the love’, also took first place in the ensemble category. One of their members, Miles MacLachlan, topped the results in the intermediate solo performance as well with ‘New Orleans nightfall’. Other solo standout acts were Jennifer Robinson, a member of Sparks house, with ‘Tragedy’, and Madelaine Corney, from Peckover house, singing in Italian ‘Nella fantasia’, and the award for the most promising musician went to Maddison Taylor, from Sparks house, who sang and played the piano in the senior solo section. An Abba tribute group, comprising members of the school staff, which performed

while the verdicts were being prepared, won a standing ovation. Adjudicator Graham Griggs, who complimented the students on their performances, is a former director of music at King’s Ely who has been a practical examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and who has made significant contributions to the Music Masters Association at a regional and national level. Head of houses Mr Tim Chapman said: “It was another fantastic evening for both performers and the audience.” Headmaster Mr Nicholas Hammond added: “The house music competition is one of the highlights of the year at Wisbech Grammar School. This year was no exception and we were extremely proud of the skill and enthusiasm shown by our musicians.”

Advice

Independent Living

 BY LISA BARWELL

T

he government is encouraging independent living by giving people more choice about how their social and care needs are met through systems such as direct payments and personal budgets. If you use government money to take on a personal assistant, or if you fund your own help privately, you face the possibility of becoming an employer and having to deal with responsibilities such as tax, national insurance, paying wages and employment law. It’s very important to know whether you’re an employer because you’ll have legal responsibilities towards the people who work for you. They’ll be your employees and you’ll have to make sure that they get certain rights such as sick pay and holiday pay. You may also have to register for income tax and national insurance contributions. If you’re an employer, you’ll have a contract of employment with your employee even if this is not in writing. This will include whatever you and your employee have agreed between you. Its best if the contract is in writing so you are both clear about your rights and responsibilities. Also, you have to give your employees a written statement of their main terms and conditions within two months of them starting work. Both you and your employee have to stick to whatever terms and conditions you have agreed on. However, some people you pay to do work for you might not be your employee. They might be selfemployed, work for an agency, or only work for you on a very casual basis. You won’t have a contract of employment with these kinds of people and you won’t have the same legal responsibilities towards them. There are rules to help you decide whether someone is your employee. Someone is likely to be your employee if one or more of the following applies: You have to find work for them and can tell them what to do and how to do it, even if they are left

16

alone to do the work you pay them a regular amount of money on a weekly or monthly basis rather than when they have done a particular job you have to find someone else to do the work if they can’t do it for some reason, for example they’re off sick. But if they have to find someone else to do the work, for example a sub-contractor or a friend, this probably means they’re self-employed you’re responsible for providing most of the tools, machinery and material to do the work.  A carer is someone who provides you with personal care and support in your home, usually because you’re sick, disabled, or have a mental health problem. They might help you with cleaning, cooking, shopping or personal care such as washing and getting dressed. A carer can either be paid or unpaid. If you have a carer, you won’t be their employer if they aren’t paid for their work. This type of carer will often be a family member, friend or neighbour. If your carer is paid, they may be employed directly by you, by your local authority or by an agency. You may also be their employer if you pay them directly for their work, even if you’ve been given money by your local authority (direct payments) to pay them. It can be very difficult to work out whether a carer is employed by you, a local authority or an agency. If you aren’t sure whether you’re the employer, you should seek advice. Disabled people who take on a carer or personal assistant now have access to additional information and support, following the launch of an enhanced version of the Disability Tax Guide website. On the website at www. disabilitytaxguide.org.uk, you can download a newly published basic guide which explains the things that you need to consider.. More information about the scope and contact details of the help service can be found on the Disability Tax Guide website at www.disabilitytaxguide.org.uk.

It’s very important to know whether you’re an employer because you’ll have legal responsibilities towards the people who work for you. They’ll be your employees and you’ll have to make sure that they get certain rights such as sick pay and holiday pay. You may also have to register for income tax and national insurance contributions.

1498 The Spice Affair Contemporary Goan cuisine you won’t find anywhere else in Spalding. BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

L

ocated at the rear of the Red Lion Hotel, but with its own side entrance, 1498 The Spice Affair offers food you won’t find anywhere else in Spalding. Serving contemporary Goan cuisine, it offers a wide range of meat fish and vegetable dishes, it tries to represent food you would eat in Goa today. Writing about the restaurant is one thing but the proof of the pudding, as they say, is in the eating so I went along to meet manager Loyd Luis and sample the menu. Goan culture, says Loyd, is in his blood: “What I really want is for people to come in and experience the good food, good service and intimate atmosphere for themselves”. While the dishes come from Arabian and Portuguese cultures a quick look at the menu reveals that much of the meat and vegetables

raw heat that you might find in an Indian restaurant and instead a flavourful traditional Goan dish. But enough of the talk, it’s time to meet the man who does the cooking. Chef Patil is originally from India but has travelled and worked all over the world. Sporting an amazing moustache he is extremely passionate about the food he cooks. Between them, he and Loyd have 40 years of restaurant experience. Because of this experience Chef Patil is happy to discuss the menu with you and then to cook to individual requirements. My starter arrives – Sev Puree. It’s an Indian street food delicacy which I’ve never had before. It’s very colourful and looks tempting. I pick up my knife and fork but am told that in India this is finger food so I should try it like that. I’m only too happy to oblige and it is delicious. I’m told that I will find different

What I really want is for people to come in and experience the good food, good service and intimate atmosphere for themselves. are locally sourced – a local restaurant supporting local suppliers. Says Loyd “It’s great to have a mixture of local and exotic ingredients. We also have a large choice of meats on the menu, venison, duck, lamb and pork. Pork is a delicacy in Goa.” I ask about the 1498 reference and he’s really enthusiastic about sharing the history of Goan cuisine. 1498 was the year that Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer, sailed his way to open up the first maritime trade route between Europe and Asia. The Portuguese traded gold in return for Indian spices and silk and Goa became a fusion of east and western cultures. The Spice Affair pays homage to this Indo-Euro cuisine. Loyd also tells me about the origin of the word “vindaloo”. Coming from the Portuguese “vinho de alho” the “vin” part meaning vinegar and the “alho” meaning garlic. So if you order the vindaloo you will find that, although it is seasoned with chillies the dish will lack the

types of this dish on every street in India. After this Chef Patil returns to the table with a chicken tikka masala, daal makni (a creamy, buttery dish of split black lentils and kidney beans), rice and naan bread. Although you would expect to find these dishes in an Indian restaurant the flavours are richer and more subtle but it still retains a nice warm spicy heat. Starters: Caldo Verde – a Po I’m offered Bebinca for dessert, a Goan rtuguese style spinach and delicacy made with refined flour, coconut potato soup milk and free range eggs but I’ve eaten all I Mushroom Balchao – wild button mushro can! Loyd is absolutely right, the best way to om tossed with Goan pic kle find out about Goan food and culture is to experience it for yourself. I make a reservation for a birthday party in a couple of weeks and Mains: Galinha Cafreal – slo say my goodbyes – I’m looking forward to my w cooked whole baby return and sampling more from the menu! chicken, an old Goan delicacy 1498 The Spice Affair is open from 12Pork vindaloo – flavo ured with chillies, ga rlic 2pm for lunch Tuesday to Sunday and for and vinegar evening meals 5-10pm Tuesday to Thursday Mandua King Praw ns – in special 1498 and Sunday and from 5-11pm on Friday and spices, marinated in dark ru m Saturday. Easter Traditions

Easter -

a time for tradition

 BY KATE CHAPMAN

You know Easter is on its way when the shops fill up with chocolate eggs and sweet treats - but this time of year is about so much more.

M

any of the popular customs we enjoy today, from hot cross buns to Pancake Day, are rooted in the events surrounding the final week of Jesus’ life. The most important Christian festival in the calendar, it is always celebrated on a Sunday. Many years ago Christians decided Easter Day would fall on the Sunday following the first full moon after the first day of Spring, around March 21, meaning it could be as early as March 22 or as late as April 25. Shrove Tuesday - the long build up to Easter is called Lent and the day before is known as Shrove Tuesday, when people’s wrong-doings are traditionally forgiven. Long ago Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, was a time for feasting and rejoicing. People confessed their sins at church and were ‘shriven’ or forgiven before Lent. As rich foods like eggs are forbidden during this period it became custom to use them up making pancakes. Lent - Lasting 40 days, this is the time Christians prepare for Easter by contemplating all the things they have done wrong. A solemn time, it reminds them of the 40 days Jesus spent alone in the desert without any food right before he began his work teaching about God. Lent used to be a time for fasting, but today people give up things they

22

enjoy like chocolate or sweets instead. Maundy Thursday - The night before his death Jesus shared a meal with friends, before which he washed the feet of every person present to show his followers they should love one another in humble ways. During the meal - or Last Supper - Jesus passed round bread and wine to represent his broken body and blood, as he knew he was going to die. Today Christians remember this act by sharing bread and wine during many of their church services, particularly on Maundy Thursday. Good Friday is the day Jesus was killed when he was nailed to a wooden cross by Roman soldiers - hence why the cross is such an important Christian symbol. There are crosses in churches and many followers wear one on a chain, while at Easter hot cross buns - with their cross shape on the top - are popular fare. Easter Sunday is a happy day for Christians, who believe that Jesus rose from the dead on this day - showing that death is not the end of everything. Many of the customs associated with Easter Day involve eggs. For the last 200 years the tradition of giving children chocolate eggs has been a popular one. Eggs were always regarded as special, even before Jesus’ time, because of their associations with new life.

Pets Corner

In association with

Good bunny care - hop to it! BY SIMON COWLING

Rabbits are great pets for children, but don’t make the mistake of thinking they are low maintenance. Depending on whether yours is an indoor or outdoor pet, there are a number of considerations. So to help you, we’ve compiled a list of top tips to keep your bunny in good health!

Outside Rabbits

 A secure hutch and spacious run is necessary, as rabbits are masters of escape. In hot weather, you’ll need to supply shade across the top of the run - try plywood sheets, and in the cold months they will need dry straw for bedding.  Good hygiene is vital, so make sure you clean out your rabbit’s hutch regularly with a good disinfectant that will kill harmful bacteria and viruses.  Pay close attention to his diet. Yes, rabbits eat carrots, but only as a treat! You must ensure they get a good variety of foods. Try a rabbit mix and add freshly picked greens such as dandelions and clover. In the winter months, give them good quality hay. Fresh water should always be

24

available and make sure you break any ice that forms on water bowls or feeders.  What about health? Rabbit’s teeth grow constantly, so they always need something to chew on to help wear them down. Not only that, but you must comb your rabbit’s fur too; especially in the summer as flies are known to lay their eggs in the matted hair around their back legs. You should also consider having your outdoor rabbit vaccinated against fatal myxomatosis.

Extras tips for house rabbits!

 Don’t forget toilet training. Bunnies are easy to house train because they are naturally clean animals. Put a litter tray, containing a

pelleted wood based litter, in the corner of your room and put the rabbit in it when he lifts his tail to go!  Mind the electrics. Rabbits like to chew and household electrics are fair game. Tape wires above ground level, or box them in. And don’t leave bunnies loose when you go out – it’s likely to be a recipe for disaster. Rabbits make affectionate pets, but bear in mind they’re sociable animals that live in groups. If you choose a pair, ensure they are neutered as soon as possible. The old saying ’breed like rabbits’ is true! If you would rather avoid getting a second rabbit, then you can always try a friendly guinea pig companion.

Family Life

Never let the Weather get in the way of play time! BY MELANIE FOSTER, MUNCHKINS KINDERGARTEN

A

s I write this article it is, as usual, pouring down with rain outside. The last few months have been so wet and windy, that at first, it was difficult to persuade our children at Munchkins that a little bit of rain and wind makes for exciting outdoor play opportunities. Once appropriately dressed though, and given licence to splash, it has been hard to get them back inside at lunch time. The children themselves have embraced our English weather, and with readily available resources have been leading their own play, with adults close by watching them develop ideas and continue to build on activities over several days, stepping in to support new learning where appropriate. One of their favourite pastimes is to use the standing water to ‘paint’ the playhouse, climbing frame and chalk boards. Their conversation alongside this was initially about colour, and then moved on to the patterns they were painting and eventually working as a team to ensure that all areas had been painted.

Who would have thought that such a simple task would involve so much active learning and critical thinking! Muddy puddles created a new dimension to this activity with the children using the mud to paint patterns on the slide and then washing it off again with water collected from our outdoor hose pipe. To support this activity the children chose from a selection of paintbrushes and rollers, with some children using fallen leaves to paint with, discovering that they could also make leaf shapes on the dry pavement. Our parents have been very supportive and are happy to see their children enjoy outdoor messy play and have provided appropriate clothing and of course the obligatory spare clothing for very wet days! Outdoor fun makes for happy, healthy children and for parents, hopefully, a good night’s sleep.

y little monkeys are all about games at the moment - but not so much the cupboard stuffed full of board ones, oh no, it’s Hide & Seek all the way in the Chapman household. There’s not a day goes by without Nancy insisting we’ve got to play. I’m not entirely sure where her new obsession has come from, but it’s all she wants to do - morning, noon and night. Don’t get me wrong - I’m thrilled she’s more interested in traditional rather than electronic toys and the television - it’s just we’re running out of hiding places! Plus she doesn’t seem to have got a grip on all the rules yet, especially the one about being quiet until you’re found. You can guarantee as soon as she’s picked her hiding place, she’ll be giggling or talking away to herself - immediately giving herself away! And on the very rare occasion we don’t manage to find Little Miss Chatterbox straightaway, Peter is usually on hand to bounce up and

down excitedly, pointing out where she is. Once we’ve exhausted every hiding place from behind the doors, under the kitchen table, and the back of the sofa, we then have to go through them all again - usually with Nancy announcing where she’s going to hide next. And it doesn’t stop there - she’s cleverly come up with another game too, to help pass the time when we’re in the confines of the car. I-Spy has cunningly been converted to take into account the fact she can’t yet spell - so instead of guessing objects based on the letter they begin with, we spot them based on their colour. It’s a bit boring I must admit, driving round the fenland countryside where everything is either green, blue or brown, but nevertheless Nancy always seems to enjoy herself - and that’s the main thing. Now it must be my turn to hide again. The pantry’s my favourite spot - at least I can raid the biscuit tin while I wait for them to find me!

Family Entertainment

Keeping the Kids Entertained over

the Easter Holidays BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

R

ecent research by Travelodge found that, on average, parents spend £300 entertaining their children over the Easter holidays. This year’s holidays run from the 4th to the 22nd April and, should the weather continue to get better as it has been doing of late, then there is plenty of scope for both indoor and outdoor activities to keep you and your family entertained. The research went on to name the Top Ten activities. Strangely enough it missed out an Easter egg hunt, a perennial favourite and something that children can really get stuck in to, whether it is helping to do some baking for snacks afterwards or making decorations to give your house a real feel of Spring, an Easter egg hunt can be a day of fun for the whole family. Weather permitting, of course! But back to the nation’s Top Ten.

Top ten holiday activities 1

Going to the cinema. A firm favourite with everyone. There are so many films at the moment which appeal to the whole family so be ready for a big discussion on which film you are going to watch! There are many films over the holidays showing in 3D so get your glasses on and your popcorn at the ready and enjoy! Visiting family and friends. This is a great way to spend the day. Whilst visiting you might like to go out for lunch – check the local familywelcoming pubs and local cafes and restaurants to see what is on offer and to take advantage of any holiday deals they may be running. Restaurants are increasingly running “kids eat free” promotions which can make a meal out an affordable choice. Baking at home. If you don’t mind the mess (and the subsequent disappearance of the children when the time comes to clean up) then baking is a great way to spend time at home. Teaching children to follow recipes or to be creative with their own ingredients can be almost as much fun as the tasting session at the end. Almost… Having picnics. We are lucky to have many places of beauty in the area so if the weather is beautiful, pack up a picnic and away you go.

5

A trip to the beach. Be it by car, coach or train beaches are within easy reach. If the weather is fantastic then swimming costumes it is, if not then wrap up and pack a wind-breaker and your kite!

6

A trip to the countryside. Being in Lincolnshire means that we are never far away from open green space. You never know what you might discover in the little villages surrounding the towns.

7

8 9 10

Visiting local museums and points of interest. A quick search on line will throw up more than you think. There are museums covering local history, animals, old farms and art. There are also several working windmills in the area which are worth a visit. Doing crafts at home. Another way to while away the time. From pompom chicks to great works of art most children relish the opportunity to get painting and sticking! Visiting a local farm. Take your pick! There are working farms in the area as well as those dedicated to smaller animals and play areas. Don’t forget to find out when the lambs are being born. Bowling. Every family member. Tournament. Loser buys dinner. A great way to round off the holidays.

As you can see, keeping the family entertained over the holidays doesn’t have to be expensive and doing a little research beforehand can lead you to the best deals and brand new experiences. The Easter holidays are often a little hint that summer is on its way so where you can get outside and enjoy!

Dance Yourself

Slim BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

F

or those who hate going to the gym and exercise in general, how about dancing to lose the weight and tone up those muscles? Think about the celebrities on Strictly Come Dancing and how they look on the night of the final compared with how they looked at the beginning of week 1! If you’re not too bothered by the number on the scales but want to do something about those ‘bingo wings’ then dance can really help. There aren’t many hobbies that combine getting fit and healthy with having lots of fun and socialising. You will find that there is a type of dance for everyone, regardless of your age and level of fitness. Zumba The undisputed king of dance fitness. Zumba is a dance and fitness craze which has slowly worked its way across the world and now has millions of followers. Zumba works by using a set of dance moves in different routines set to upbeat Latin tunes. It sounds simple enough but it’s not for the faint hearted! Saying that the moves are easy to pick up as they are repeated in different variations and you’ll find that if you go to the classes as a group of you go then you’ll have lots of fun as well as not feeling too foolish if you don’t pick certain moves up at first! And you’ll see results quickly as it is a great cardio work out as well as working all the major muscle groups. Calories burned per hour: 500-1,000 Jazzercise Using dance and fitness in a way that is similar to Zumba but it uses Jazz music instead of Latin. Each 60-minute workout routine blends dance and muscle toning movements choreographed to music including Top 40, jazz, country, funk, and classics. Every dance fitness class includes a gentle warm up, 30-minute aerobic workout, muscle toning and strengthening segment with weights, and a stretch finale. Calories burned per hour: 600 Street Dance Mainly using hip hop as its starting point, but anything goes, this is a high energy dance style and you can use pretty much any music so long as it has a good beat. You can learn

32

routines in a group or freestyle and either use a selection of moves in a random order or create your own moves and start a new craze! No two routines are the same as Street Dance likes to put the emphasis on being an individual and seeing what you can create. Calories burned per hour: 400 Belly Dancing Definitely one for the ladies, belly dancing is one of the more popular kinds of dance to help you lose weight. It is also good for helping you tone up that middle area that a lot of us have trouble with! Again it’s more fun if a group of you do it together. It’s also great for all abilities and fitness levels as it isn’t as energetic as other dance forms and relatively easy to pick up. It’s great for several of your core muscle groups and if nothing else is a great party trick! Calories burned per hour: 275 Ballroom dancing Ballroom dancing is good exercise for both men and women but don’t be fooled, while it may look effortless and graceful when you see the professionals dancing, it takes a lot of work and practice to get to that point! The benefit of ballroom dancing is there is a lot of variety – dances can be slow or fast, anything from a slow waltz to jive, cha-cha to foxtrot. It is the most social of the dance types as many classes encourage you to switch partners for different dances. Calories burned per hour: 150-300 depending on the type of dance

Are you one of the 60% of adults overweight or obese, wondering how did that happen? Well we all know how... slowly! A tiny bit here, less exercise as you always feel tired, more work and less play. If you are thinking enough is enough, time to make healthy choices and feel more energy then Acupuncture could be part of that healthy boost you are looking for. Acupuncture is not a cure all for bad habits and a poor diet but using a combination of ear and body points it can help with cravings, help regulate hunger, energy levels and mood. Once you feel more energetic Acupuncture can help to get Qi and blood moving, your sleep quality may well improve and your digestive system will be grateful for the help.

Simply Fitness

Get Fit For the

Summer BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

A

fter a long and wet winter, spring is finally here and the countdown to barbecues, days at the beach and summer holidays abroad has begun. Now that the evenings are starting to get lighter and the temperature is getting warmer, the outdoors is available again for your health and fitness regime. If you are feeling like you could lose a few pounds and increase those fitness levels then there are some positive steps that you can take now to ensure you head into summer at your most fabulous! A good place to start is to look at what you are eating. It is very easy in winter to eat lots of comforting carbohydrate heavy food to get us through the cold weather! But spring is a great time to break that habit and start eating seasonal vegetables. As well as asparagus, cauliflower and new potatoes there are also great salad vegetables arriving – cucumber, lettuce, radish and spring onion. Eating seasonally is not only better for the environment but it also gives you the best selection of fresh produce. Leaner meats such as spring chicken are available and you can find delicious recipes using seasonal food all over the internet. And eating seasonally is usually cheaper as well. Next have a think about your exercise regime (for those of us that have one). If we are honest we could all do with exercising a little more. The recommended amount of time an adult should exercise is between 20 minutes and an hour, three to five times a week. This is often easier said than done for a lot of people with jobs and family commitments. Spring brings the opportunity to get outside for exercise and bring some variety for those whose exercise during the winter is done exclusively at the gym. You can exploit the extra light in two ways – by getting up a little earlier in the morning to exercise or by taking

advantage of the lighter evenings. You can even do something as a whole family, head out for an evening walk or get on your bikes and enjoy the warmer weather. If it is relatively close, you could walk or cycle to work rather than drive and you’ll be getting fitter without even trying! Invest in a pedometer and you will see your progress for yourself, it is gratifying to see how many steps you have taken in a day. Remember to take things steadily and make gradual changes. If you radically change your diet and fitness routine all at once then you are far less likely to keep it up. You will find it only too easy to slip back into those winter hibernation habits! Instead, if you take it one step at a time and aim to make small lifestyle changes over a number of weeks you’ll surprise yourself with how much progress you’ve made and not even noticed! Make sure your goals are realistic – if you currently do no exercise then don’t be signing up for any marathons this year! Marathons aside, you can set yourself a fitness goal which includes fundraising at the same time. There are many charity events which run through the summer which involve a group of friends getting together and walking, running or cycling in return for sponsorship. If you begin to exercise regularly now then a 5 or 10km run at the end of summer is definitely within your reach and not only will it give you the motivation to stick with it but you also get to do something great and raise money for some worthwhile causes. As always, if you are planning on doing something strenuous like a 5km run then check with your doctor before beginning any sort of training. If you are interested in helping a charity through a walk, run or cycle then get in touch with your favourite charity and they will let you know what events they have on and where they are taking place.

Remember to take things steadily and make gradual changes. If you radically change your diet and fitness routine all at once then you are far less likely to keep it up.

aking over your lounge needn’t be a costly enterprise – there are plenty of ways to change the look of your living area without breaking the bank. From updating key pieces, to planning before you buy, you can achieve a fresh new look in your home which will last for many years to come. Interior designer and owner of Austin John Interiors, Spalding, Nikki Austin says planning ahead is the key to avoiding costly mistakes. “We always draw a scale plan of the rooms we are furnishing, and make scale models of the proposed furniture to arrange within the room,” she advises “But if you can’t do this, grab some sheets of brown paper and cut it to the size of your furniture and arrange it in the room, on the floor before you buy and don’t forget to measure the door opening to make sure you can get it in the house!” Think carefully when choosing a sofa – as this is an item you will have for many years. as you will have it for many years. “A good sofa a sound investment. If you like to curl up on yours, make sure you choose one which is at least 40 inches deep,” Nikki says. “Fillings of feather allow you to sink into your sofa, great for a truly sumptuous, relaxing seat, but if you’re not up for a hefty workout plumping them, ask your retailer if they can offer an alternative, like feather wrapped around a foam.”

When it comes to colour schemes there is no right or wrong – only badly composed. Nikki says monochromatic - using the same colour throughout the room in different levels of dark and light shades - is a key trend and always a successful option. “Working with the same pallet of colours makes the room feel bigger, but be careful, they can look bland and uninteresting, “she says. “Think of the current trend of neutrals, which work great in modern homes and can look equally stunning in older properties too. “A room decorated in only one colour, with no other accents will work well if you layer your tones of the colour, try deep shades mixed with mid and light tones. The most important element to think about in a monochromatic scheme will be texture - using very hard, shiny surfaces mixed with deep fluffy throws, a soft carpet and some textured cushions will give your room a designer look.” Alternatively think about adding splashes of colour like orange, yellow or lime accessories in a grey room, which will not only lift the look but also give a new colour scheme at minimal cost. Think carefully about lighting too as this can dramatically alter a room. “A bright pendant in the centre of the room offers good ambient light, while you may want to soften the tone by using table lamps,” Nikki adds. “You could also, consider asking your electrician to install a dimmer to give you great flexibility to alter the mood.”

Garden Project

Spring into action in the garden BY KATE CHAPMAN

With spring finally on its way, there’s no doubting it’s an exciting time to be back in the garden, with plenty of jobs to get on with.

A

You can help dry up and warm the soil during March and April, by covering an area with pegged down black binliners.

lthough we can still expect the inevitable April showers, this month can provide some sunny, although slightly chilly days – meaning it’s the ideal time to tackle some general garden maintenance. Start by applying a general-purpose fertiliser to your borders and beds, taking care not to damage any emerging shoots, or burn them with the fertiliser. Remove tired winter bedding and plants that did not survive the season, as well as faded daffodil and tulip flowers. Deadhead your pansies, primulas and other spring bedding plants too. Hoe borders to stop any annual and perennial weeds from spreading and seeding themselves and top up pots and tubs with fresh compost. Early spring is also the ideal time to sow hardy annuals in pots or modules to provide a bit of colour. In mild areas with light soil you can sow directly outdoors while half-hardy summer bedding plants like marigolds and petunias should be sown in trays. Label them and plant them under cover, or in a heated propagator, only putting them outside when the weather is warm enough. Be vigilant and watch out for pests and disease. Check roots to make sure there is no damage if any of your plants have started to wilt. You can apply chemical or biological control if there are any larvae

present, but young containerised plants are unlikely to recover if there is bad damage. Mow your lawn only when necessary – in essence whenever it is growing – adding the clippings to the compost heap in thin layers. Sow new lawns, or over-seed dead patches from mid-April until early May, but if the soil is very wet or cold delay sowing until the weather improves. Don’t neglect your vegetable patch either. Thanks to the wet weather, it’s unlikely you’ve been able to plant out onionsets, shallots, horseradish and garlic cloves yet. Don’t panic – experts advise they are potted individually in 2 to 3 inch pots with moist multi-purpose compost, with the tip of the tuber or bulb just proud. Put them outside, or ideally in an unheated greenhouse, if you have one. Once the soil has dried up sufficiently they can be carefully moved and transplanted. You can help dry up and warm the soil during March and April, by covering an area with pegged down black binliners. Now is also the time to plant chitted potatoes outside or in potato grow bags, harvest asparagus spears and prepare vegetable seed beds by removing all the weeds and forking in plenty of compost. Crops including parsnips, cabbages and radishes can also be sown direct into the ground.

Learning to Drive

Getting on the road for the first time BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

Okay, so you want to learn to drive? Simple enough but you’ll need to get some vital paperwork sorted first. To get your motoring ‘career’ on the move you need a provisional licence. You can apply for this up to three months before you turn 17, and it allows you to sit your theory exam on the actual day of your 17th birthday if you’re eager! Theory test

The theory test consists of two parts: a multiple choice questionnaire and a hazard perception test. With the theory examination completed, you can take to the road with a driving instructor or a fully qualified driver who is over 21-years of age and held a full driving licence for at least three years. The vehicle you learn in must also clearly show ‘L’ plates at the front and rear, and it must be properly MoT’d, taxed and insured.

Insurance

One of the main concerns of new drivers is finding the cheapest car insurance possible. Low-cost insurance policies often come with large excesses, which means you have to shell out for the initial sum of any claim or repair. In the case of many new drivers’ cars, the excess can be more than the value of the car, which makes such policies very little use to the driver. Going for the cheapest insurance can also prove to be a false economy when you look at what is and isn’t included. Basic Third Party insurance may cost a smaller amount but you have very limited cover. Far better to pay more for Comprehensive cover that includes you, your car and possessions as well as other drivers, cars and third parties in the event of a bump.

First car

Whether you pronounce it ‘K-A’ or ‘KA’, Ford’s diminutive KA has been the king of the little supermini for many years now. If you’re on a shoestring but you want something that’ll get you around with little bother, the KA is the ideal companion. Low tax, insurance and fuel costs combined with the car’s petite dimensions and straightforward design provide you with the motoring equivalent of a low-cost supermarket. A great alternative is the Fiesta. Thanks to

42

Ford’s devotion to the Fiesta name, there are now thousands of the hatchbacks to choose from. Whether you want a new one or an old used model, the Fiesta is the go-to motor for any first time driver looking for something with a tiny bit of style but with dependability, too. Minimal running costs and respectable space inside means that any teenager will be satisfied taking their friends to the pictures or just sitting happily on the local supermarket car park.

Audi RS 7 Sportback

 BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

Well, the car is simply a God on four wheels. It looks amazing; it delivers more thrills than the fastest rollercoaster you’ve ever been on; it sits four adults in total comfort and it’s made exquisitely.

O

ne of the benefits of being a motoring journalist is that most press cars come with a tank of fuel. This is necessary for the job you understand. The thought of actually filling up a test vehicle and paying for it with your own wallet sends most hacks recoiling in horror. But very occasionally a car captivates you so much that you really don’t mind throwing fistfuls of cash at it when the free juice runs out. The Audi RS 7 Sportback is one such motor. Why did it seduce me? Well, the car is simply a God on four wheels. It looks amazing; it delivers more thrills than the fastest rollercoaster you’ve ever been on; it sits four adults in total comfort and it’s made exquisitely. So let’s drill down a bit further into the very essence of this stunning car and look at the root of its monstrous muscle. With the help of its two turbochargers, the 4.0-litre TFSI petrol engine delivers its formidable peak power of 553bhp between 5,700 and 6,700 rpm, and top torque of 516lb/ft between 1,750 and 5,500 rpm. The turbochargers boost pressure, helping to generate incredible accelerative force. This gives the German goliath a phenomenal 0-62mph acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds and a governed 155mph top speed. If you have Autobahn aspirations, then you can increase the maximum speed to 174mph by specifying the optional Dynamic package, and enhance it even further with

the Dynamic plus package, which calls a halt to acceleration at 189mph. Despite performance of this magnitude, the RS 7 Sportback nevertheless manages to keep a firm grip on reality where economy is concerned. Thanks partly to an engine startstop system it can cover up to 28.8mpg on an average run. In the RS 7, the Quattro permanent allwheel drive system enables you to tackle long journeys in all weather without fear of losing control. The car is also pinned securely to the road by an electrically extending rear spoiler providing additional downforce. And when it comes to scrubbing off speed there’ll never be a problem, because behind the huge 20-inch seven twin-spoke alloy wheels are four massive brakes which provide reassuring stopping power. The interior of the RS 7 Sportback conveys the sporting theme with subtlety, but leaves you in no doubt you’re travelling in a very special Audi flagship. RS logos appear in the dials with their white faces and red needles, on the flat-bottomed threespoke multifunction steering wheel, in the illuminated entry sills, in the rev counter and in the displays. RS logos are also punched into the front RS super sports seats with their pronounced bolsters, integrated head rests and honeycomb-quilted Valcona leather upholstery. The two-seat rear bench, which is standard for UK models, also has well-defined contours for optimum grip.

And, as befits the ultimate incarnation of the A7 Sportback, the RS 7 features a list of standard equipment, and it is possible to upgrade the inventory even further with a portfolio of driver assistance, driver entertainment and driver information systems, including adaptive cruise control, night vision, a Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System with 15 speakers and 1,200 watts of total power. Awesome? I think so.
