Welcome to the September issue After a busy couple of months we have tried to have a low key month at home, catching up on all the boring jobs – tidying the garage, DIY and general maintenance. With such lovely weather we have been able to make the most of the area on our doorsteps with plenty of family picnics, days out with friends who normally have children at school and simply spending time together at home. The highlight has to be visiting Wicksteed Park…many happy days were spent there as a child and it’s lovely to do the same now with my own children. This is a bumper issue with lots of information on the local area – we celebrate what Holbeach has to offer residents and people in the local area, we are looking at all things Health related as well as how to beat a bulging waistline if you have over indulged over summer. This month Annette talks about new baby etiquette and Tim test drives the Subaru Impreza. It may seem a while away but unfortunately as the nights draw in we all need to think about those winter nights and how to prepare the home for the challenges it brings. Check out our home and property section this month to ensure you have everything checked off the list! But before the dark nights and weather change all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and what remains of the summer weather!

ANOTHER year of 100% Pass Rate for Boston College A levels Boston College students are celebrating after achieving an amazing 100% A level pass rate for the third year running. A fantastic result for all students, with 42% achieving their A levels with a high grade (A*/A/B). Students completing their first year of A levels also achieved highly, with a pass rate 2% higher than the national average. These results demonstrate the hard work put in by the students and staff, the consistently high standards at Boston College and the high calibre of the A levels teaching team. Jo Maher, Principal and Chief Executive of Boston College added, “We are absolutely delighted with this brilliant set of results which evidence the quality of our teaching and learning at Boston College, our culture of excellence, and the outstanding support our learners receive.” Results Day was a huge success for Ariane Fleuriot, who is celebrating her two A’s and a B in her A levels in Psychology, Sociology and English Language. She said “I

am so happy with my results, I couldn’t have done this without the help and support from my tutors and friends. I am now ready to start my Sociology and Psychology joint degree at Bishop Grosseteste University, thanks to the knowledge and life skills I have developed at College.” Poppy Thomson has secured a place at Coventry University to study Law after receiving an A in Sociology, B in English Language and C in Law. Poppy said, “I’ve loved my time at College. Before I started my A levels, I was home-educated, so the idea of staring college was quite scary, but the lecturers have been amazing and so supportive. I’m so excited to start University.” Well done once again to all those Boston College A level students. Whether they continue their studies in Higher Education at Boston College, move away to a university, or enter employment, they are all wished the best of luck in their next steps towards an exciting career.

Water harvesting now possible at Boston community garden A specialist new structure is allowing rain water to be harvested for use within Boston’s community garden in Central Park. The structure was created and installed at reduced cost by Boston’s Adventures in Wood, in partnership with Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS), thanks to donations from Anglian Water and Boston Borough Council. Sarah Castelvecchi, Water Efficiency Manager, said: “Most of the plants in the community garden, like herbs, don’t need to be frequently

watered but it makes sense to use rain water captured for when watering is needed. “During the summer demand for water increases for outdoor use, however we all need to use water wisely all year round as this region is classified as Very Water Stressed.” LCVS works in partnership with Anglian Water to help spread its messages amongst households in Boston to ensure that the local environment and communities thrive now and in the future. Jackie Lane, LCVS project officer, said: “We are delighted to see the water harvesting system

now in place in the community garden and thank all those who made it possible. “It sends a wonderful message about the difference we can all make at home in using water wisely and conserving rain water for our gardens.” Anglian Water’s Drop 20 campaign encourages all of us to cut our bills and water usage each day – that’s a lot of water saved for tomorrow. soundLINCS Announces soundPLAT4M Lincolnshire based community music organisation soundLINCS are celebrating following their success in securing a substantial new funding award from National Foundation for Youth Music. The funding will support soundLINCS to commence a three-year project called soundPLAT4M starting in September 2018. The project will create new music making opportunities for children and young people working with Lincolnshire Adoption Support Service and Freiston Hall School as well as other locations across the county. soundLINCS has previously developed a wide range of services with these project partners which include music-making, workforce development, research, advocacy and information. soundPLAT4M will engage with the least advantaged children and young people in communities and schools across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and North East Lincolnshire. They will be able to take part in a full range of music making opportunities such as digital music production, bands, singing and song writing. In addition to increasing music skills, soundPLAT4M is designed to support other outcomes for children and young people such as improved confidence and collaboration skills. soundLINCS’ CEO Nikki-Kate Heyes MBE, said: “We’re delighted that Youth Music have given us another fantastic opportunity and that they continue to recognise the work that we strive to deliver through quality and innovative community musicmaking opportunities and training for all ages and communities. With match funding, soundPLAT4M represents new investments of £300,000 in our region which will make a real impact for the partners and groups involved. It is a really exciting time for soundLINCS and a brilliant opportunity for the East Midlands.” Matt Griffiths, Chief Executive Officer at Youth Music explained: “So many children and young people – particularly those experiencing challenges in their lives – miss out on opportunities to regularly make music, to progress and follow their own musical paths. soundLINCS’ soundPLAT4M project will support and develop young musicians right across Lincolnshire, helping to tackle this imbalance head-on.” For further information about soundLINCS and their projects, visit www. soundlincs.org, or, visit the soundLINCS Facebook page: www.facebook. com/soundLINCS or Twitter: www.twitter.com/ soundLINCS, email info@ soundlincs.org or call 01522 510073. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 5 www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 5

T

here has been much concern about pressures at the Pilgrim Hospital which pose a threat to some services – primarily maternity and children’s services. This is the district hospital for not just Boston borough but much further afield, and when any services are at threat of being withdrawn it is understandable that passions will be aroused. News that there were staffing difficulties at the Pilgrim at such a level that some services were at risk of being withdrawn came suddenly and out of the blue. The angry response from residents to that bad news was just as swift. The council kept a watching brief on an unfolding situation until it met as a full council and agreed a vote of support for staff at the hospital, but no confidence in the ability of senior management at United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust (ULHT) to resolve the situation.

A motion of no confidence is ALWAYS a very serious matter, and no council would undertake such a vote lightly, especially in respect of another public body. But the unravelling crisis appeared at that time to be getting deeper with residents becoming more desperate and ULHT

Councillor’s

Column Each month a different member of Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet writes about the issues which they have responsibility for. This month Cllr Michael Cooper, Leader, Boston Borough Council talks about Pilgrim Hospital

management seemingly unable or unwilling to address the issues to anyone’s satisfaction. The council has pledged to work with the MP in taking residents’ concerns about this to Government, and with the Lincolnshire Health and Wellbeing Board and the ULHT. There was a certain amount of anger at the latest meeting of the ULHT to discuss the Pilgrim because it was held in Lincoln. The council organised a further meeting in Boston of its scrutiny committee to which health bosses were invited to discuss the Pilgrims’ future. They faced a three-hour grilling from councillors and members of the public. The meeting was held on the very day that the hospital declared that any child requiring more than 12 hours observation would be moved to another hospital, as would any expectant mother not yet at 37 weeks gestation requiring medical attention – an increase from 34 weeks. These interim measures have been introduced while the hospital grapples with staff shortages. Staff recruitment and retention have been poor, but this is a national problem and not unique to Boston. What has emerged, very strongly, is that residents feel they have not been consulted or even kept very well informed, by the hospital bosses and that has bred an atmosphere of mistrust, suspicion and anxiety. Those from the hospital left with the message ringing in their ears that they need to engage with the community properly, otherwise public confidence is undermined. The council’s task and finish group, charged with examining the NHS Lincolnshire Sustainability and Transformation programme,

is to continue its work, and expand its remit to take account of the developing crisis at the Pilgrim, involve other organisations who want to make submissions and prepare a report with recommendations for the full council and other relevant organisations. The BIG issue here is difficulty in recruiting staff to the Pilgrim. The Trust is committed to ramping up recruitment to advertise Lincolnshire as best we possibly can and attract the staff we need. I admit to sometimes being a little shocked at some of the content placed on social media about Boston, often ill-informed and damaging to the town’s reputation. It’s not big and it’s not clever. We are now in competition for medical staff throughout the country and we all can play a small part in promoting Boston so that any professional seeking career advancement who Googles “Boston, Lincolnshire” is not then put off by what they find. The facts are that there is much here to recommend historic Boston and rural Lincolnshire, especially to those seeking a better quality of life away from the pressures of city living. It’s not just me who thinks this – independent Royal Horticultural Society judges have awarded Boston three gold in-bloom awards, and they know a thing or two about pleasant environments. We now wait with bated breath for the announcement later this month (September) of the judgement after this year’s examination of the town. Of course, we are all hoping for a fourth gold, but whatever the result I want to thank all those involved in the in-bloom campaign, our paid grounds staff, those employees from partner organisations and every one of the volunteers who work hard because they are proud of Boston.

Cllr Michael Cooper, Leader, Boston Borough Council

Travel Compensation With this time of the year being holiday time for most, we hope everything goes smoothly if you’re jetting away but you can be entitled to compensation if everything doesn’t go to plan. If you booked a flight that departed from Europe or was with a European airline, you might have rights under EU law if your flight is delayed or cancelled. For the EU law to apply, you’ll need to have departed from the UK, European Union (EU), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. If these don’t apply to you - for example, because you flew from New York to Los Angeles, or to Europe on a Qantas plane. What you’ll be entitled to will depend on the airline. If your flight’s delayed for 2 or more hours, your airline have to give you food and drink, access to phone calls and emails accommodation if you’re delayed overnight - and journeys between the airport and the hotel The airline should give you

vouchers to get these things at the airport. Ask someone who works for the airline if you’re not offered any help. If your flight’s delayed for 3 or more hours, you have the same rights as above but you’ll also be entitled to get compensation if the delay is the airline’s responsibility - for example, if they didn’t get enough bookings or there was a technical fault. You won’t get compensation if it was delayed because of something like bad weather or a strike. You’re entitled to a set amount of compensation depending on the distance of the flight, the length of the delay - how late you are getting to your destination and whether you’re flying to an EU or non-EU destination. You could be entitled to up to €600 depending on the length of delay and the flight. More information can be found at the Citizens Advice website You don’t have to take the flight if it’s delayed

for 5 hours or more. It doesn’t matter whose responsibility the delay is. If you don’t take the flight, the airline legally has to give you all of the following: a full refund for the flight or other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking, for example an onward or return flight. If you’re part-way through a journey, a flight back to the airport you originally departed along with all the rights you have if the flight was delayed more than two hours. If you do take the flight, it would be the same as if the flight had been delayed three hours, with the same amount of up to €600 depending on the length of delay and flight. If your flight is cancelled, you have the legal right to either a full refund - including other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking such as onward or return flights a replacement flight to get you to your destination. Ask for a refund or replacement at the airport if you can. If not, you can claim from the airline later. You also have a legal right to help with costs if the cancellation delays you 2 or more hours or compensation if you’d be delayed 2 or more hours by the replacement flight offered. If you get a replacement flight, the airline legally has to help you with things you need while you’re waiting at the airport for your replacement flight. You can also claim compensation, depending on the length of time between booking the flight and it being cancelled, the distance of the fliught and the length of time you have to wait for a new flight. This, again, is up to €600. To find out more about this subject, please visit: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/ holiday-cancellations-and-compensation/if-yourflights-delayed-or-cancelled/

Mini Police Mini Police is a new primary-school engagement coming to Lincolnshire in September 2018.

T

he Mini Police project we introduced to Simply magazine last month continues to gather momentum every day. Over the last 4 weeks of the school term, PC Tim Newell visited several schools across the Boston sector along with the Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) assigned to each school to introduce the project to both pupils and class teachers. They explained the importance of the project, how Mini Police would be representing not only their school but also Lincolnshire Police, and gave a brief insight into some of the tasks and projects that Mini Police will be undertaking, and also a sneak preview of the uniforms that Mini Police will wear for official duties. Needless to say, the response from the children in every school was phenomenal, with more hands in the air than they could count when they asked who would like to join! The children were told that there will be an election in September, with children from Years 5 and 6 being elected by their peers, and asked to think about what would make them a suitable candidate for the role. They will be asked to prepare and present an election speech in September, so will have plenty of time to think about what qualities they can bring to the project.

To give them some ideas, Mini Police from one of our pilot schools were asked to list the most important responsibilities and what they intend to do to make a difference as a Mini Police volunteers: ‘I intend to do a good job in the role of a Mini Police officer to make a difference to the school and also the world’ – Jennifer ‘I think the most important responsibility is helping others and trying to make the environment better’ – Emily ‘I think the most important part of being in Mini Police is looking after others’ – Dominic ‘I want to help people and work as part of a team to help our community to be a better place’ – Lennon ‘You have to be very mature and responsible because you are representing the school’ – Katy ‘The most important thing about Mini Police is that you need to always be sensible and you need to be good in class’ –Ryan ‘As a Mini Police I am proud of what I have achieved’ – Ruby

The full list of Boston schools starting Mini Police in September is as follows: • Boston Pioneers Free School Academy • Park Academy • The St Nicholas Church of England Primary School • Carlton Road Academy • Staniland Academy • The Saint Thomas’ Church of England Primary School • Wyberton Primary School • Wrangle Primary School • The Butterwick Pinchbeck’s Endowed CofE Primary School • Fishtoft Academy • Hawthorn Tree School • Swineshead St. Mary’s Church Of England Primary School • The Fourfields Church Of England School (Sutterton) • Old Leake Primary School

or most families, the birth of a new baby is a very exciting time! There will have probably been lengthy talks about everything that a new baby means – a new chapter, things to buy, hints and tips plus lots more. Friends and family seem more interested in us and our health, more keen to meet up and more likely to call or drop in for coffee. This is usually a welcome increase in our social network but sometimes, especially once the baby is born, visitors to the house become more of a hinderance than a help. We feel obliged to have visitors round because we don’t want to upset anyone, especially family. There are however, some pretty good basic rules that all visitors can adhere to and help support a new family in ways they might not have thought about.

easy to warm up food. 10. Take washing away – ask the family to put a basket of washing out for you to take away. Bring it back a day or two later and leave it on the doorstep. If the family are having a Babymoon and don’t want visitors yet, respect their decision and try not to take it personally. It’s not that they don’t want you to see their baby, but they might want the chance to bond as a family or work out the problems they are having with breastfeeding or sore stitches. If visitors are not yet being received, or you are too geographically distant, consider sending a supermarket delivery to them (message to confirm a suitable time!). It will save them a trip out and they will appreciate it more than flowers and another teddy bear. Other ways in which you can really support a new family are to do other repetitive practical things in the home – mow the grass, fill the car up with petrol, clean the bathroom, take older siblings out for the day etc. Family and friends always rally round to help a family in their first few weeks, but don’t forget to keep that up after the ‘newness’ and novelty of the baby has worn off. Most parents need the most help after the first 3 months – the time at which fairweather friends have been and gone.

1. Only visit if you’ve been invited. Don’t assume and don’t turn up unannounced. 2. Don’t visit if you’re unwell – even if it’s just a cough or cold 3. Keep visits short and don’t overstay your welcome. 30 minutes is a good start. 4. Ask before picking up the baby and wash your hands 5. Know when to give the baby back 6. Resist the temptation to give advice if it hasn’t expressly been asked for 7. Don’t comment on the physical appearance of the mother 8. Don’t expect too much 9. Bring food. Casseroles, soups, pasta bakes – nutritious, filling,

be inspired Obesity in the UK is at an all-time high with two out of three adults in the UK overweight or obese. So the demand for a healthy weight loss programme that offers real solutions to individuals, families and whole communities through a supportive approach based on sound principles has never been greater.

S

limming World’s approach is based on a deep understanding of the psychology of slimmers. We believe that the burden carried by overweight people is two-fold. There is excess weight, but there is a far heavier burden to be lifted – that of guilt, self-criticism and poor self-esteem. We help people to shed the misery of excess weight, supporting members to lead happier, more fulfilling and healthier lives. Through an understanding and compassionate approach we help members to develop the motivation, confidence and mutual support they need in order to make healthy and highly effective lifestyle changes for life. It’s this deep understanding of the most effective support for slimmers that has seen Slimming World become the UK’s leading weight loss organisation. 1. Food Optimising – our no-hunger eating plan Slimming World’s eating plan, Food

Abi

Alison

Ward

Optimising, turns conventional wisdom about dieting on its head. It is the most generous and flexible approach to weight loss in the world. It provides a structure or framework around which members have the freedom to choose what they eat, when they eat and how often they eat to suit every individual’s taste and lifestyle. There is little or no weighing and no calorie counting involved whatsoever. 2. Body Magic – to encourage a steady increase in activity Body Magic is Slimming World’s unique programme designed to inspire and support members to become more active. It has been developed in collaboration with leading academic experts including Emeritus Professor Ken Fox, a government adviser on exercise. Body Magic is built on wellestablished psychological and scientific principles of behaviour change. It’s in line with current government exercise initiatives focused on getting people more active.

3. IMAGE Therapy – a unique and powerfully motivating support system IMAGE Therapy stands for Individual Motivation And Group Experience and is at the heart of Slimming World. Involving the whole group, IMAGE Therapy invites members to see achievements positively and in perspective. Based on compassionate and understanding support, each week members share experiences, exchange their personal solutions to common challenges, and share practical advice such as recipes and money-saving ideas. Members look ahead to potential pitfalls and, with the help of the group, are encouraged to set mini-targets and action targets to overcome these. Helping members to raise their awareness to the ways in which they sabotage their weight management success in a genuinely caring, powerfully motivating and totally non-judgemental environment is the key to empowering them to make new lifestyle changes.

Health & Beauty

Rid Yourself of your

Holiday Weight Gain So you’ve been away and gained a few pounds...don’t worry you can get back on track

T

here isn’t a magic number of “ days” you can spend eating all the Mexican food and margaritas you want before you start to gain weight, but the good news is there are certain tactics for your post holiday diet that can help your body “recover” after a few days off the wagon. First, to determine how much weight you’ll gain after a few days of unhealthy eating, use the same calculations you’d use if you want to drop weight. An extra 1,000 calories per day would cause you to gain about two pounds per week, while

an extra 500 calories per day which would cause a one-pound weight gain in a week. Secondly, consider how you were eating previously. If you have been chronically under-eating and over-restricting calories, you will most likely gain more than one or two pounds in a week. We underestimate the terrible effects on our metabolism that chronic under-eating has, and unproportional weight gain with increased calories is one of them. However, there is also an interesting upside to eating more

food. Research shows that when you overeat for several days, your body responds by increasing the amount of calories burned. That’s right, overfeeding (the scientific name for overeating) leads to a temporary increase in your metabolic rate that can range from 4 to 12 percent. But you should note this increase in calories burned does not completely counteract the increase in calories consumed, so you’ll still gain weight. Fortunately, if you’ve overindulged on delicious food on holiday (and why not, you’re on holiday!), you can easily recover.

Simply go back to your normal clean-eating habits and active lifestyle, and any weight that you gained will come off. Even a small increase in activity will help you rid you of those few pounds in a couple of weeks. What you shouldn’t do is start aggressively dieting and restricting your calories. This can promote a “binge and restrict pattern,” which may or may not have negative impacts on your metabolism in the short term, but over the long term it lays the groundwork for an unhealthy relationship with food.

Essential Oils Roman Chamomile

Grapefruit

Coriander

Settle back and calm down. Roman Chamomile will soothe your body, skin and mind either by diffusing, putting a couple of drops on the bottom of your feet at bedtime, or adding some to a hot drink. The plant, with flowers that resemble a daisy, has been nicknamed the ‘plant’s physician’ because it has positive effects on other plants growing nearby. If you need a little fix of peace, Roman Chamomile can help you find your quiet place again.

Grapefruit essential oil is derived directly from the skin of the fruit and you’ll enjoy its uplifting and invigorating scent either in massage, body scrubs, diffusing or in water, giving your drink a flavour-filled and vitalising boost. Diffusing grapefruit oil invokes a sense of clarity and can help uplift your mood. When applied directly to skin it will help promote a healthy, clear complexion. (Remember to avoid sun exposure for up to 12 hours after applying any citrus oil topically).

Coriander is perhaps best known as a spice in food but it has many other properties as an essential oil. Did you know that if you apply Coriander oil directly to your skin (mixed with your favourite moisturiser) you’ll start to see the cleansing properties contribute to a clear complexion and better looking skin? In fact, this oil works very similarly to Lavender as they share several of the same chemical constituents so if you are out of Lavender then reach for this for it’s amazing, soothing benefits.

USES: • Younger looking skin • Supports a healthy immune system • Insomnia • Calms inflamed skin • Flatulence • PMS • Rheumatism • Sprains & Strains

USES: • Weight Loss • Anti-inflammatory • Reduces Depression • Disinfectant • Respiratory Infections • Antibacterial • Inhale to reduce sugar cravings • Arthritis

Business Focus

Tony Bills

Landscape Gardener

M

ost of us can potter around in our gardens; weeding, trimming the hedge. But when it comes to more serious stuff it’s usually time to call the professionals. If it involves taming the great outdoors, beautifying the beds and barriers and sprucing up the spruces then here’s your man for the job. A local lad, Tony was born with a love for getting his hands dirty. Helping parents and neighbours with hedges and ‘veg’ plots grew into thoughts of actually making a living at something he loved to do – and was good at! During a fifteen-year ‘sabbatical’ in the butchery trade these thoughts developed until finally, some twenty years ago, he took the plunge and started his own business as a Landscape Gardener. The initial combination of hard landscaping, hedge and conifer cutting, tree-work and turf laying with word-of-mouth recommendations grew an impressive, satisfied customer base. He quickly found himself working all over Lincolnshire – and beyond. Some jobs have taken him as far as Milton Keynes, Birmingham and Southampton with a very successful and memorable week in Great Yarmouth. With leisure time becoming ever more important and people wanting to enjoy their gardens and enhance and ornament their properties Tony, and now co-worker David, have

found they have had to develop new skills and adapt to ever-changing customer demands. Block paving has always been, and still is a popular choice for many. Fencing of all types has always been something of a specialty. Patios have become unremittingly more elaborate and complex in content and design with the Lads supplying and laying more choices and colours of concrete and natural stone slabs than ever before. Concrete bases, gravel, granite, slate and other

aggregates are in constant demand as neighbour competes with neighbour for something just that little bit different and more special. Tony and Dave’s growing knowledge and experience can handle them all. Regular seasonal work has always been a major part of the working calendar and Tony has been working for many clients for all of the last twenty years. Nothing is a better guarantee of future work than a good job well done – and at a keen price too!

The message is then, if you want a free quote for a definite plan or idea, or if you want a change but are not sure where to go with it, call Tony on 01205 624684 or 07717 416 728. He’s happy to come and chat and is chock full of excellent suggestions and solutions to make your garden grow – beautifully. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 21

Home & Property

Winter Maintenance

As Autumn arrives it’s a good idea to finish all of the outside jobs before the cold weather sets in. This Autumn Maintenance Check Guide helps to ensure that you carry out all those end-of-the-year jobs that will protect and preserve your home and garden as we enter the colder wetter Autumn season. Frost Damage All external decorating should be finished and remedial work using sand and cement mortar should be done before the Autumn temperature falls, because frost can affect this sort of work badly. Frost damage will affect the structural integrity of cement and mortar, and you don’t want to be doing the job twice! On a building site for example, sand and cement work is not allowed to commence unless the temperature is at least 3° and rising. Heating Checks Now is the time to check your heating is working. Don’t wait until you need it, give it a trial-run in Autumn to make sure that it is working properly. This means that if you need repairs to your boiler or heating system you can book it in before you really miss your central heating. It’s also handy to do this now as most plumbers’ prices rise during the winter. Book a Central Heating Service Preparing for the cold weather should be done now and your boiler, or other heating should be serviced (by a competent, registered person) in Summer or Autumn. Do not wait for cold weather to find out that something is not working properly. Heating engineers get really busy at the beginning of the cold winter weather, as customers turn on their heating and find a pump has seized or a pilot light won’t light. Beat the rush by booking your annual boiler service now if you haven’t yet had your boiler serviced, it isn’t too late. Expansion Tank Maintenance If you have a feed and expansion tank in the loft you can carry out a simple test to make sure it’s working well, by moving the float arm up and down a couple of times while watching to check the valve lets in water and then shuts the water off. This means you can effect your own repairs or it will at least can save you time and money by finding the fault with your heating system before you call a heating engineer. Loft Insulation Autumn is a good time to top up your home insulation. Do you know how much loft insulation you should have? While you are in the loft, make sure you have a depth of at least 270mm of loft insulation. This often means raising the level of your loft floor if you use your loft for storage.

22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Make sure it is laid away from the roof eaves to let in air for loft ventilation, and prevent damp via condensation. Pipework in Your Loft Check pipework in the loft is insulated. Pipes can be insulated using purpose-made pipe insulating foam tubes which are really easy to fit. They are usually a grey coloured dense foam tube. They simply slot over the pipes and help to prevent them freezing. There are also special elbow joint insulating materials, which allow you to insulate bends and corners in your pipes, or you can tape insulating foam or tape around the bends. Stopcocks and Isolating Valves Check your loft for a stopcock and make sure all stopcocks (this applies to the whole house) are working. Give isolating valves a quick turn and test to make sure they do turn off the supply. Including these checks in your Autumn maintenance regime means that if you do get a water leak or a frozen pipe you can be confident that you can turn off the water supply. Stop the Drafts in Your Home Check all door and window draughtproofing, including the letter box. Adding a threshold strip to external doors is quick and easy way to stop draughts and save money on heating. Check Ventilation to Stop Condensation Autumn is a time that we tend to shut up our houses and the resulting lack of ventilation can cause condensation. In older houses with solid walls, the appearance of damp in the colder months is common. This is usually caused by condensation.. Condensation can be reduced greatly by making sure rooms are well-ventilated and extractor fans are installed. Check Exterior Walls Pick a bright Autumn day to have a look at pointing and brickwork to make sure there are no cracks or flaking that need to be repaired. Water can find its way into the smallest defect so be sure to look carefully. You can use a pair of binoculars to save you climbing a ladder or erecting scaffolding for a visual check. As a final check, make sure there is no soil or other debris build up against any house walls

which could cause a breach of your damp proof course. Check Air Vents and Air Bricks Check that air bricks are clear of dirt and debris to ensure you get a proper flow of air under your suspended floor which helps prevent condensation and wet and dry rot. Make sure that trickle vents in windows are clear of debris. Trickle vents allow you to have a flow of air in the room when windows are shut tight without experiencing a draft. Clear Drains, Gutters and Gullies In late Autumn, when the leaves have fallen, remove leaves and other blockages from drains and gullies, and clean and repair leaking gutters and down pipes. This prevents rainwater running down your walls and soaking into brick, stone, timber and render. While these surfaces will resist damp if they are in good condition if they become soaked over long periods of time they may allow water into the house, especially if the surface is damaged by freeze thaw action. Roof Maintenance Use binoculars or a camera with a good zoom lens to check the condition of your roof. If you have cracked or slipped tiles, damaged flashing, or valleys and gullies that are full of debris, you will need to hire scaffolding to carry out maintenance. Otherwise you should get quotes from reputable roofing companies to carry out repairs before the damage becomes more serious. Check Outside Taps If you have an external tap, make sure both the pipes and tap itself is insulated to prevent freezing. Fit a Water Butt There is unlikely to be a shortage of water over the winter period, but you can take advantage of seasonal special offers by buying a water butt and fitting it.

Business Focus

Bold New Step

for Local Flooring Specialists

L

ouise and Simon are proud to announce the opening of their family run flooring business, L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd. The family have always lived locally and after having many years of experience and celebrating Simons’ 25th year of fitting this year decided to open up their own showroom. The doors opened to the public late July to showcase a wide range of flooring products. The showroom holds various different flooring types such as: carpets, vinyl, laminate, Karndean, Moduleo, Quickstep and more. The showroom has specifically designed demonstration flooring for most flooring types as a visual example for customers to see when finding the perfect flooring for them. With the many years of experience the family decided to design the showroom to provide a service for every customers’ individual needs. What makes L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd unique is the fact that they are one of the largest stockists in the area. As well as having many different flooring stands, they also have a variety of carpets and vinyl on roll stock which means customers and take their carpet or vinyl home that day. The showroom holds over 50 carpets and vinyls on roll stock all offering a range of different styles, textures and prices. In addition to roll stock the showroom also offers carpet and vinyl remnants and off cuts of various shapes and sizes. This is the piece of flooring left from the roll stock after the greater part has been brought. There is also a small roll section of entrance matting with remnants and off cuts included. Carpets and vinyl aside, L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd has much more to offer. Quickstep

flooring is a diverse range of many collections of laminate, engineered wood and LVT. Quickstep flooring is simple to maintain and has stunning results. As well as L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd being a registered quickstep retailer, they also are Karndean specialists. Karndean is a vinyl flooring with many unique ranges. They have various sizes of design strips which are added between planks and tiles for a natural looking effect. Karndean Design Flooring has a large selection of products in the showroom and one main attraction is the Karndean table. This is a large table that has all different styles of Karndean flooring inside for customers to try their own looks and ideas by customising the flooring to what they are looking for. The demonstration flooring is a example as to what customers can create for what is suitable for them. Another style of flooring L&S offer is Moduleo; a luxury vinyl flooring combining the products natural beauty with the products durability. Fun fact: L&S

are the only retailer of Moduleo within 15 miles radius. If you are looking for carpet binding, L&S are able to offer their service to bind together the edge of a carpet to wool to prevent fraying. The finished product could be used for many reasons such as rug to protect flooring from scratches and scuffs to a runner down the stairs. The service is completely custom, customers can choose any colour wool, shape and size of the carpet to bind giving it a personal touch. The showroom also holds a small section for a chance for customers to look and feel different artificial grass. This is a supply only service at a great price. L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd have a small friendly team of Simon and son, Craig fitting, Louise and daughter Nicole with daughter-in-law Xiana in the office. The team are all looking forward to welcoming you to the showroom and the future of their business.

Subaru Impreza 2.0i SE Lineartronic PROS ‘N’ CONS

FAST FACTS

T

he fifth incarnation of the Subaru Impreza brings four-wheel-drive grip within reach of buyers who don’t fancy an SUV. It is an Astra-sized hatchback with a symmetrical all-wheel-drive (AWD) system coupled to 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol Boxer units. I drove the higher powered 2.0-litre. What’s intriguing about the new Impreza is that it is the first motor to be launched in Britain on Subaru’s fresh Global Platform – the pillar of all its future models. There is nothing stirring about the latest Impreza’s silhouette, but the interior is better than the former model’s. The quality of plastics and finishes have been enhanced, while the cabin is wider and offers more rear legroom. Maximum cargo capacity has also been boosted by 10 litres. The cabin houses lots of kit, too, with safety being the new Impreza’s selling point. The car is fitted with EyeSight technology – a camera-based system that scans the way ahead for other road-users. It is more accurate than conventional camera and sensor arrangements, continually producing 3D images and identifying specific objects – rather than just reacting to unknown obstacles. Behind the wheel, the 2.0-litre powerplant isn’t mind-blowingly quick. The car pulls away briskly, but anything after this feels a tad lifeless, so you must plan your overtakes in advance. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) imitates an orthodox auto’s ratios. It works okay, but it does whine offensively. There’s no manual gearbox,

as the intricate EyeSight gadgetry only functions with the CVT. So, when all’s said and done, you need to work the engine like a dog to make real headway. Relax to a cruise, however, and the refinement is respectable, even if the levels of tyre rumble are a touch too much. Handling-wise, the Impreza corners with hardly any body lean. The steering is wellweighted, and the grip is incredible, due to the all-wheel-drive system. Alas, you will fork out for the Impreza’s traction talents when you fill the car with petrol. The 2.0-litre variant only returns 42.8mpg, meaning the Subaru is eclipsed on the efficiency front by many SUVs. But Subaru is happy with how safe its cars are. It is proud of its durability. It is proud of its slightly unexciting worthiness. And that’s cool, for keeping a core brand of loyal buyers

(2.0i SE Lineartronic as tested) à Max speed: 127 mph à 0-62 mph: 9.8 secs (est) à Combined mpg: 42.8 à Engine layout: 1995cc four-cylinder ‘boxer’ petrol à Max. power (PS): 156 à CO2: 152 g/km

Price: £24,995 content, but it will do nothing to lure new customers from competing manufacturers. Still, if you want a family-sized hatchback, then the Impreza is a safe bet – in more ways than one.
