Welcome to the May issue This year is zooming by, how are we heading to May already? May is my little boy’s birthday so we have a busy diary…his social life is better than mine! We are heading down South with friends to visit Peppa Pig World, wish me luck – we are ‘glamping’ so eight of us in two tents, is it appropriate to put all the kids in one and the adults in another for some peace and quiet?!!!! It’s so nice to have the lighter nights so we can be out enjoying the garden (and a pimms!) after work. My two are definitely in the ‘outdoorsy’ category so we have set up a little planting area for tomatoes, strawberries and a few flowering plants too. In this issue we are looking into dental care as May is National Smile Month, we find out what so you need to do when planning an extention! Food and Drink is an all veggie showcase with broccoli and cheese muffins as well as vegetable quesadillas. They are both yummy and family favourites in our house. Plus for a naughty treat we are celerating National Doughnut Week! Tim this month is test driving the DS7, check out his review on page 26. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

Kirton honours its war hero A community has been praised for the way in which it has honoured the memory of its war hero 100 years after he received the Victoria Cross for his courage. Relatives of Sgt Harold Jackson travelled to Kirton from as far away as Australia for the unveiling of a memorial stone and described the local arrangements and the local turnout for the event as “phenomenal”. Malcolm Herbert’s father was Sgt Jackson’s brother. He travelled from Clitheroe in Lancashire for Thursday’s ceremony and said: “What this community has done is incredible; to find this is phenomenal.” Attending with his parents from Swansea was Michael Barker who had travelled to Kirton all the way from Sydney, Australia. His father’s grandmother was Sgt Jackson’s sister. Sgt Jackson’s brother emigrated to Queensland, Australia in the 1940s and relatives Bill Jackson and his sister Linda Rose in Australia sent a wreath to be laid in Sgt Jackson’s memory at Kirton War Memorial. His great niece, Jean Middlebrook, husband Aubrey and son Richard attended from Bournemouth and were soon making the acquaintance in Kirton Town Hall of relatives they barely knew about. Jean said: “I was brought up to know all about Chummy Jackson and what he did. We are very proud and will visit his grave in France on the occasion of the centenary of his death in August.” Members of the 2nd Battalion

Yorkshire Regiment attended and Major Gary England said: “This means a lot for the regiment, for those currently serving and those who have served, to celebrate 100 years since those brave men and women served their country and their local community. There has been a great turnout to mark the occasion. There is clearly great regard for Sgt Jackson here – he is their local hero and it makes us very proud.” Guests processed from the town hall to the war memorial to be welcomed by Kirton Parish Council chairman Cllr Ian Turner. Mr Stan Naylor recalled Sgt Jackson’s heroic deeds leading to him receiving the VC and Father Paul Blanch, vicar of St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Kirton, dedicated and unveiled the commemorative paving stone at the foot of the war memorial. Regimental Colonel David O’Kelly, of the East Yorkshire Regiment, read the Exhortation and the Yorkshire Regiment bugler sounded a poignant Last Post as banners were lowered and raised and the Reveille sounded after a minute’s silence. Mr Toby Dennis, Lord Lieutentant of Lincolnshire read the Kohima Epitaph. Wreaths were laid by the Lord Lieutenant, Major England, Cllr Turner, Boston Mayor Cllr Bernard Rush, the Royal British Legion and Sgt Jackson’s family. The National Anthem was led by Kae Turley and Lucy Dopherty from Kirton’s Thomas Middlecott Academy. Sgt Jackson received his VC from King George V at Buckingham Palace after single-handed action in which he

flushed out the enemy and took a machine-gun out of action. The London Gazette of May 8, 1918, recorded: “No. 18474 Sjt. Harold Jackson, E. Yorks. R. (Kirton, nr. Boston, Lincs.). “For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. “Sjt. Jackson volunteered and went out through the hostile barrage and brought back valuable information regarding the enemy’s movements. “Later, when the enemy had established themselves in our line, this N.C.O. rushed at them and, single-handed, bombed them out into the open. “Shortly afterwards, again singlehanded, he stained an enemy machine-gun, threw Mills bombs at the detachment, and put the gun out of action. “On a subsequent occasion, when all his officers had become casualties, this very gallant

N.C.O. led his company in the attack, and, when ordered to retire, he withdrew the company successfully under heavy fire. “He then went out repeatedly under heavy fire and carried in wounded.” The action took place at Hermies, France. But Sgt Jackson’s war was not over until he was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, near Thiepval, Somme, France, on August 24, 1918, aged 26. His body was located in 1927, close to the same place where he had won his VC, and his ashes were interred at Flers. He was the only person in the borough to be awarded the VC, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Jackson Drive in Kirton is named after him.

Rubbish fire

warning

Despite recent warnings about the potential for electrical items in rubbish collections to start fires another close call has been experienced when banned items were pulled from a smouldering Boston bin lorry. Cllr Michael Brookes, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for waste services, said: “A bin lorry costs £169,000 and carries a crew of three, so a fire in the load risks life and destruction of a valuable asset. “We are repeating again the advice already issued - do not place batteries or any electrical item, which is any item which needs a battery or mains power to make it work, in either your green or blue bins. There is overwhelming evidence that these items can and have caused fires.” Previous warnings were issued after batteries in Boston’s recycled waste were thought to be responsible for two fires. Even apparently dead batteries can carry enough of a charge to short and provide a source of ignition. These can be buried in a pile of as much as 100 tonnes of combustible material at the transfer station operated by Lincolnshire County Council which takes waste from

Boston borough and East Lindsey district. And now fire in a travelling bin lorry has been narrowly averted. The first fire at the waste transfer station caused some damage to the building and its fittings. Used batteries can be recycled at most supermarkets. Batteries and electrical items can also be disposed of for free at the new household waste recycling centre in Bittern Way, Boston, which opens on Monday (April16) or any other household waste recycling centre. Large items, such as televisions or desktop computers, can be collected under Boston Borough Council’s bulky waste arrangements – www. boston.gov.uk/bulky or call 01205 314200. Any of these items in blue or green bins will be treated as contamination and the bins will not be emptied while they remain in them. Action is already on its way to deal with those who routinely or seriously contaminate their blue bin recycling collection. There will be a substantial period of education and information before new rules come into effect which could culminate in worst offenders receiving a £75 fine.

Local Author Launches Book: Boston in the Great War Boston’s rich history climaxed in 1914 with arguably the first British casualties of the First World War when the town’s trawler boats were sunk in the North Sea. Men, sons and fathers, lost in someone else’s conflict, found themselves victims of a figurative storm that no weathered sailor could have foreseen. This small town was affected in many other ways during those long, hard years of the Great War. Boston’s other traditional industry, farming was decimated of its workforce when men joined up in their hundreds to answer Kitchener’s call or to fight alongside their brothers when the eager territorial force was called into action. Biographical accounts bring to life what existence was really like in those dark days of some of the most ferocious fighting encountered in the fields of France and Belgium. Both men and women recite their varied and colourful stories, all brought alive by their humour, resilience, extreme kindness and love of this unique town. Boston was also one of the few towns that fought on every front, the real and dangerous threat of the notorious German High Sea Navy when the Navy’s code of conduct evaporated under pressure from the German Admiralty, to the threat of the aerial menace forged in the mind of Count Ferdinand Von Zeppelin and then onto the grim battlefields of Europe. Whilst at home the women, tendered the wounded, farmed the land and enthusiastically challenged the status quo of

male orientated labour. Surviving these horrors was a testament to a town built on values that outweigh anything that would try to diminish the free will of a determined community. Amongst other memorials in the town and surrounding areas, a square base on a chamfered plinth bears the names of the fallen with the timeless epitaph in the gardens: ‘Walk in this garden of peace and remember. When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today.’ Author, Mark Green’s interest in writing was sparked once he started writing articles for his town’s local history magazine, Barnsley Memories. He became fascinated by the sacrifice the local fishermen of Boston made for their town, and was eagerly driven on by the enthusiasm of local Boston people willing to help with his research into this remarkable place and into what the community endured. His personal interests are cycling, reading, history tours, researching local history and enjoying time with his two children.

here have been concerns for a long time in Boston borough about the impact of shared housing by residents who are not from the same family – these properties are known as Houses in Multiple Occupation, or HMOs for short. A main concern has been anti-social behaviour generated at some HMOs which causes a nuisance to neighbours and the local area. Boston borough has a higher proportion of HMOs than many districts with its transient population of migrant workers. All landlords of such properties now need to sit up and take notice - an extension of mandatory Houses in Multiple Occupation licensing is coming. The Government has decided to extend mandatory HMO licensing because of its concerns about the number of HMOs operated by landlords who rent out sub-standard, overcrowded and dangerous accommodation, exploit vulnerable tenants and, in some cases, defraud the public purse. Poorly managed and maintained HMOs have a significant impact not only on tenants, but can also affect local communities through excessive and inappropriate disposal of waste, excessive noise and antisocial behaviour. At the end of February 2018, the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government announced that by October 1, 2018, landlords of most HMOs that house five or more people who are not a single household will need to have applied for an HMO licence. A landlord who fails to apply for a licence by October 1, 2018, will be committing a criminal offence. The council will soon be asking all landlords and letting agents to complete and return a short form to pre-register their details and

Each month a different member of Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet writes about the issues which they have responsibility for. This month Cllr Martin Griggs, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Property and Community talks about property and accomodation.

Martin’s Notes the details of properties owned and managed by them which will require a licence to comply with the new requirements. The council will be putting systems in place to enable formal applications to be made as soon as possible after the Government makes the final Orders necessary and publishes its official guidance. As part of the new measures, the Government is introducing national minimum room sizes for rooms used for sleeping and mandatory HMO licence conditions relating to refuse storage and disposal. The council has, however, not being sitting around waiting for this to happen. For some years it has been running its rogue landlords project to tackle these issues, and it has been recognised by the Government and awarded extra funding on three occasions. The main thrust of the council’s rogue landlords initiative has been to investigate cases where accommodation provided has been sub-standard and to prompt landlords into rectifying defects. Successes have seen landlords invest in their properties providing modern, comfortable and sanitary conditions for their tenants. In a few cases the council has shown that, when all else fails, it has been prepared to take rogue landlords to court, especially where, when working with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, there have been hazards presenting a risk of injury or even a risk to life. Our aim has always been the same, to improve living conditions for all tenants in private rented accommodation and to persuade landlords to do the right thing for their tenants. Recently the council was awarded a £1.39 million grant from the Government’s

Controlling Migration Fund, following a bid by the council and partners. The funding will be used to promote community cohesion, in partnership with various local charities and organisations. There will specifically be increased focus on tackling and remedying the impact that rogue landlords and anti-social behaviour have had on the local area. The funding will allow the council to continue and expand its work to tackle rogue landlords and improve housing locally. Owners of unfit private rented accommodation could also find themselves facing new penalties imposed by the council. Councils have been given authority to impose civil penalties for certain Housing Act offences. These could include financial penalties of up to £30,000 for failing to comply with an improvement notice, offences in relation to licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), failure to comply with management regulations for an HMO and contravention of an overcrowding notice. Previously these offences had to be dealt with by the courts. The council is considering a new civil penalties policy to determine when to issue its own penalty and the severity of the penalties. Repeat offenders could end up on a national database of rogue landlords and property agents. More information about these very significant changes can be accessed by following the links below. •http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ uksi/2018/221/made •https://www.gov.uk/ government/consultations/ houses-in-multiple-occupationand-residential-propertylicensing-reforms

Advice Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire’s advice for issues with trees and hedges with your neighbour.

If you disagree with your neighbour about a tree or hedge If you and your neighbour disagree about a problem with a tree or hedge, it’s best to try to resolve things informally. Problems could include, for example, if you think a hedge is too high or branches from your neighbour’s tree are overhanging into your garden. If you rent your home, talk to your landlord about the problem. They might be able to deal with the disagreement on your behalf. Before you cut a tree, check if it’s protected by a Tree Preservation Order. If it is, you’ll have to ask the council for permission to cut the tree even if it’s yours. Check who owns the tree or hedge If the trunk or main stem of a tree or hedge is on your land, you own it. If it’s on the boundary between properties, you’ll need to check the legal documents you got when you bought your home. They’ll indicate where the boundary is and might say who’s responsible for the tree or hedge. You can buy the documents from the Land Registry if you don’t have them - it only costs a few pounds. It might be a good idea to buy the documents for your neighbour’s house too - they might give information that’s not covered in yours. If it’s not clear where the

boundary is, you can get help from RICS - they work with surveyors who can help with property problems. Try to find a solution with your neighbour Talk to your neighbour face to face if you can - make a note of what you agreed. If you don’t feel comfortable speaking to them, write a letter or ask someone to contact them for you. Keep copies of any letters or emails you send or receive. It’s often best to find a compromise, for example sharing the cost of pruning a hedge even though you think your neighbour owns it. It could help you keep a good relationship and might be cheaper than paying a solicitor to resolve the disagreement. If the problem continues There are different ways to deal with the problem depending on who owns the tree or hedge. If your neighbour owns the tree or hedge If your neighbour won’t cut branches hanging over your garden, you’re allowed to chop them off but only the bits on your side of the boundary. Check if your neighbour will let you throw away the branches - legally they own them.

If you think your neighbour’s tree is dangerous, you can report it to the council - for example if you think it might fall over. They might ask the owner to make it safe or deal with it themselves. Search for ‘trees’ on your council’s website to find which department to contact. You can find your council’s website on GOV.UK. Get specialist help from a tree surgeon if the roots of your neighbour’s tree are affecting your home and garden. You can cut them yourself but you must try to limit the amount of damage to the tree, which can be difficult to do. You must tell your neighbour in advance if a tree surgeon needs to go on their land. Check what to do if you think a hedge is too high on GOV.UK. If you can’t solve the problem, ask your council to help. They can only help if you try and solve the problem yourself first. If you own the tree or hedge Your neighbour can cut any branches that are overhanging into their garden as long as they only remove the bits on their side of the boundary. If they want you to cut your tree or hedge just because they don’t like the way it looks, it’s up to you whether you do the work. You should check if the tree or hedge is dangerous before you decide.

If your neighbour says your tree is dangerous, you could ask a tree surgeon for advice. It’s also worth finding out if your council can check if the tree is safe - you can find your council’s website on GOV. UK. Search for ‘trees’ to find which department to contact. Your hedge might count as a ‘high hedge’ if it’s over 2 metres check the definition on the Royal Horticultural Society website. Your neighbour could report it to your local council and you could be told to cut your hedge. Get help from a mediator If you still can’t agree, you can get help from a mediator - this is someone who doesn’t know either of you and is trained to help people resolve disagreements. It’s a good idea to ask your council if they can help you find a mediator. You can find your council on GOV. UK If you still need help, you can look for a mediator on GOV.UK. You might have to pay for a mediator. Get help from a solicitor If the problem continues, you’ll need to get help from a solicitor who specialises in neighbour disputes but this will be expensive. Check our advice on how to choose a solicitor on our public website. You can also check if you can get help with costs.

Hawthorn Tree Primary School H Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk

awthorn Tree Primary School took part in this year’s Big Schools Clean Up with a litter pick around the school grounds and the local area. Our Schools Council pupils went out on Monday 5th March equipped with litter pickers, high visibility waistcoats, gloves and black disposal bags. A host of litter was collected and disposed of with the children keen to improve the local area. The children noticed that whilst the volume of litter in the local area has overall reduced, this year there was a lot of dog poo discarded in small plastic bags. Their plea is that dog owners clean up properly after them and dispose of the bags safely and

responsibly. Hawthorn Tree Primary School is celebrating after being award the Eco-School bronze award which includes knowledge and understanding of and action for the environment.

The annual awards event, which is sponsored by the Federation of Small Businesses, recognises the hard work, commitment and achievements of both Apprentices and Employers over the past academic year. The evening was hosted by BBC Radio Lincolnshire Presenter, Melvyn Prior, who is extremely passionate about the Apprenticeship programme and believes they provide great opportunities. Following the awards event, Melvyn said “What a great way to celebrate the hard work and determination of the Apprentices. I was particularly pleased to hear stories of former Apprentices going on to gain full time employment.” Boston College currently trains over 400 Apprentices and out of these 15 Apprentices were nominated to receive an Apprentice of the Year award for

outstanding achievement and progression during their Apprenticeship, some even finishing ahead of schedule. The Outstanding Apprentice of the Year Award was presented to Demi Weir, Apprentice in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, who was extremely pleased with the evening’s success, said “An Apprenticeship was definitely the right choice for me, enabling me to stay in the job as well as gain the skills and qualifications I need for the future.”

There were 14 employers that received a special recognition award in a variety of categories, including Listers Group Ltd, MetsaWood, Lincolnshire County Council and Boston Mayflower. Apprenticeships are working for the growing number of Apprentices and Employers that alongside Boston College are helping to equip the workforce of the future with the skills and qualifications they need for a successful career.

The Village

Midwives W

hen I was a little girl, I used to look at the stars in the night sky with my Dad. We would look out of my bedroom window across the fields and he would tell me stories about the different constellations. One day, he asked me how many stars there were, and although I don’t remember the answer I gave him, it would have been something like hundreds or thousands. What he said to me has stayed with me my whole life and in one sentence, changed my view of the world forever (although I didn’t know it at the time). He said, “how about just one star and a thousand mirrors”. At the time, I thought he was plain crazy. Of course there weren’t mirrors hanging in the sky! Of course there were thousands of stars! I’m not sure how I knew this, but I was certain that I was right, and he was wrong. Little did I know how wrong I could be. What I have come to learn from that conversation is not anything to do with astronomy, physics or science. It’s to do with soul. The connection between the soul, the universe, birth and death. The connection between me and midwifery. Nearly all the atoms that make up our bodies were created beyond the Milky Way. In every one of us, the universe is present, and we are all present in the universe. We are the same thing. We are

travellers on a cosmic journey. Stardust, swirling and dancing in infinity, stopped for just a moment to meet, to love, to share. In loving other people, new life is born and as women bring life into the world, they birth and rebirth the universe. When I look up to the same night sky and talk to my son about the stars and his place in the universe, I cannot fail to feel the perspective of how tiny we are. The circle of life; of birth (of which I see a lot), of death (of which I see more than you might realise), the two doors into and out of this world, I am reminded of how little time we have on this earth and how much time we waste worrying about things that are out of our control. If one star can be reflected a thousand times and create a night sky, anything is possible. We can create for ourselves any life that we want. It is only our blinkered thinking that holds us on the path we currently walk. This Bank Holiday weekend, I encourage you to spend some time outside looking at the stars. Use their reflection to see your own life with more perspective and decide what it is you need to do to better find your place. My Dad showed me the way to think beyond what is visible with my own eyes and not to be afraid to take the path less travelled. Sometimes, wandering off the path and getting lost is the best way to be found.

Tips for a Healthy Mouth

Good oral health can have so many wonderful lifechanging benefits. From greater self-confidence to better luck in careers and relationships, a healthy smile can truly transform your visual appearance, the positivity of your mind-set, as well as improving the health of not only your mouth but your body too. •Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste. • Clean in between your teeth at least once a day using interdental brushes or floss. • To check if you have bad breath lick your wrist, let it dry and give it a sniff, if it smells your breath probably does too. • If you use mouthwash don’t use it directly after brushing as you rinse away the fluoride from your toothpaste. • Quit smoking to help reduce the chances of tooth staining, gum disease, tooth loss, and in more severe cases mouth cancer. • Make sure your toothpaste contains fluoride; it helps strengthen tooth enamel making it more resistant to decay. • Change your toothbrush every two to three months or sooner if it becomes worn as it will not clean the teeth properly.

14 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Childrens Oral Health

• Weaning your baby off the bottle early can help them avoid developing dental problems. • All children up to three years old, should use a smear of toothpaste with a fluoride level of no less than 1000ppm (parts per million). After three years old, they should use a toothpaste that contains 1350ppm -1500ppm. • Parents should try and supervise your children’s tooth brushing until they are about 7 years old. • Take your child to the dentist early, as

soon as their teeth start to appear, this will help them get used to the sights, sounds and smells of a dental practice. • Use a timer or brush along to a song to ensure your children are brushing for the correct amount of time. • Use a reward chart to track your children’s brushing habits and get them actively involved in brushing their teeth. • Use disclosing tablets to show areas of your children’s mouth which may need better brushing.

National Smile Month 14 May to 14 June 2018

I

n a nutshell, National Smile Month is the UK’s largest and longest-running campaign to promote good oral health. Together, with thousands of individuals and organisations, National Smile Month highlights three key messages, all of which go a long way in helping us develop and maintain a healthy mouth. They are: • Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste. • Cut down on how often you

have sugary foods and drinks. • Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend. The aim of National Smile Month is to ultimately improve the UK’s oral health. Organised by oral health charity, the Oral Health Foundation, the campaign hopes to raise awareness of important health issues, and make a positive difference to the oral health of millions. With the help and enthusiasm of those who are passionate about health and wellbeing, National Smile Month 2018

hopes to see thousands of events and activities up and down the UK educate and engage local communities about the importance of a healthy mouth. In 2018, the campaign will take place between 14 May and 14 June, and will encourage all dental and health professionals, schools, pharmacies, community groups, colleges and workplaces – in fact anyone with an interest in good oral healthcare, to join in and help us educate, motivate and communicate positive oral health messages and improves

the quality of smiles all around the UK.

Dying Matters 2018

Dying Matters is a broad based and inclusive national Coalition set up an when NCPC merged with Hospice UK. The aim is to support the impl The Coalition’s mission is to promote awareness and support chang bereavement, and through this to

T

he Coalition is made up of over 32,000 members. This includes organisations from across the NHS and the voluntary and independent health and care sectors, including hospices, care homes, charities supporting old people, children and bereavement, from social care and housing sectors, from a wide range of faith organisations, community organisations, schools and colleges, academic bodies, trade unions, the legal profession and from the funeral sector. Working together, members of the Dying Matters Coalition are encouraging people to talk about their wishes towards the end of their lives, including where they want to die and their funeral plans with friends, family and loved ones.

Why has the Coalition been set up? The End of Life Care Strategy, published by the Department of Health in 2008, identified a number of significant issues affecting dying and death in England: • Some people die as they would have wished, but many do not. Many people do not die in the place they would choose to, many do not receive quality care at the end of their lives and there are reports that people have not been treated with dignity and respect • In the past, the profile of end of life care across the NHS and across society has been relatively low, leading to variability in access to and the quality of end of life care across the country and in different communities • People are uncomfortable

talking about dying and death, meaning that when they come to the end of their lives friends and loved ones are not aware of their preferences The Dying Matters Coalition is part of a wider drive to ensure that all people have access to high quality care and support at the end of their lives, helping people to attain ‘a good death’. This involves improving service provision across the NHS; but to be successful, the attitudes and behaviour of people across society need to change. Dying Matters was set up to promote and support this process. Where do people want to die? There is a major mismatch between people’s preferences for where they would like to die and their actual place of death. Our research shows that around 70% of people would prefer to die at home, yet around 60% currently die in hospital. Does Dying Matters support hospice care? Yes. Dying Matters fully supports hospice care as it sets a gold standard that needs replicating in care homes, hospitals and all settings. What is Dying Matters Awareness Week? The highlight of the Dying Matters Coalition’s calendar

16 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

is Dying Matters Awareness Week. The Awareness Week involves a programme of events to mark the occasion and is being supported by a national PR and media campaign. Coalition members are supporting Dying Matters Awareness Week in a wide variety of ways, in many places with support from the national Coalition. Why should I talk about death? Isn’t it morbid? Not at all. We all live and we all die, and life is something to be celebrated through to death. Talking about dying and death is something people understandably feel uncomfortable about, but it is something we all need to do - otherwise we, or our loved ones, may not die in the way we want. Talking about dying does not make it happen, or happen faster. Not talking about dying and death has many unwanted consequences: • If relatives and loved ones do not know a person’s preferences, they may make decisions about care the dying person does not want • Close relatives may be unaware of how best to help and support a person who is approaching death • Those nearing death may feel isolated, distressed or frightened, which can impact on the level of pain they

Dying Matters is encouraging people to

communicate their preferences for the end of their lives – broadly, this corresponds to the following questions: • Where do you want to die? – at home, in a hospice, in a hospital, in a care home, or somewhere else? • When you are approaching the end of your life, is there anything you want to do? – do

you have a ‘bucket list?’ • When you are approaching the end of your life, how do you want to be cared for? – what medical support do you want? Are there any medical procedures or treatments you don’t want? Do you have a preference for who cares for you? Do you want any spiritual support (i.e. support related

to meaning and purpose, whether you are religious or non-religious)? • After you have died, what do you want to happen? – what sort of funeral do you want? Do you want your organs to be donated to help others to live? Do you want to donate your body to science? Have you made a will, is it up to date and where is it?

Business Focus

Dying Matters Awareness Week What Can You Do?

There are two inevitable events in our lives; birth and death. The first, we plan for and celebrate. The second, it feels easier to ignore. Every death affects people differently. We’re often too polite to ask for help or don’t offer for fear of saying the wrong thing. We might be unsure of our loved ones’ wishes or be in the dark about their administrative affairs. It’s all understandable. Death is a difficult subject. So, what can you do? The answer is simple – it all starts with talking. Dying Matters awareness week from 14th to 20th May is a national campaign aiming to get everyone thinking about bereavement and breaking down barriers

by getting your thoughts out into the open. Lincolnshire Co-op’s funeral homes are taking part by running a series of interactive coffee mornings and drop-in events. They’re a chance for you to ask all those unanswered questions you’ve been too shy to tackle and to meet our friendly, sympathetic and professional colleagues. It’s also an opportunity to mull over your future wishes such as; what’s on your bucket list? Would you like to be buried or cremated? What music would you like at your funeral? There’s a huge range of personal touches you can add to a ceremony these days. So, whether it’s Elvis singing Love Me Tender and a motorcycle hearse or a decorated eco-cardboard coffin and an all-yellow

dress code, you can let your loved ones know now. One way of recording such wishes is through a Lincolnshire Co-op funeral plan. It’s also a good way of paying for your funeral in advance, giving your family peace of mind and one less thing to handle when the time comes. Instead of insurance policies and over 50s plans - which may not cover the average cost of a funeral - a Lincolnshire Co-op funeral plan makes sure that whenever you come to use it, the full cost is covered if the requirements haven’t changed. Got you thinking? You can discuss all of this and much more at our Boston Dying Matters sessions – we look forward to meeting you there.

Hurrah! Ice Cube Tricks It’s National for Summer Doughnut Week

N

ational Doughnut Week is a very special week where businesses including bakers, coffee shops, offices and educational establishments take part and sell lots of delicious doughnuts to raise funds for The Children’s Trust. The week, sponsored by CSM Bakery Solutions, has been running for 27 years, after being launched in 1991 by independent baker, Christopher Freeman. Last year National Doughnut Week raised over £26,500 with the help of hundreds of independent bakers, cafes and shops who sold delicious doughnuts for charity. The Children’s Trust provides rehabilitation to children and young people with acquired brain injury at their national specialist centre in Surrey, helping them make the best recovery possible after a serious incident or illness. The charity is also home to an expert multidisciplinary team who offer a nationwide community service that supports children and young people with acquired brain injury following an accident of illness. The centre is also home to one of the only specialist schools in the UK dedicated to providing

education, therapy and care exclusively for children and young people aged 3-19 with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). They also support a range of neurological conditions and complex medical needs through our residential and day placements. Recently The Children’s Trust has started campaigning and aims to be an active voice for children and families affected by brain injury and neurodisability, speaking out on their behalf and empowering them to share their experiences

These clever flavored cubes will enhance your drinks when melting rather than watering beverages down. Ice is nice in the summertime, what with it being cold and all. The downside? It melts. Which is bad when you think of the weak, watery mess at the bottom of your iced latte cup. But if you use flavored cubes instead of water-based ones, suddenly the melting becomes a strategic way to change and improve your drinks.

Get Your Fruity Fix Peach Nectar Cubes: Drop a square into a glass of Prosecco for a reverse Bellini. Apple Juice Cubes: Add to a pitcher of cut-up fruit and wine — white and red both work — for an easy sangria. Savoury Sippers Beer Cubes: Chill down your favorite pint. Because the only thing better than beer is more beer. Pickle Juice Cubes: An irresistible addition to a pitcher of Bloody Marys Olive Brine Cubes: Drop a small cube into a glass of vodka or gin for the ultimate dirty martini. Do I need

Permission for An Extension? Whilst we would of course always recommend consulting with expert architects and discussing any plans with the local council’s planning department, if you are thinking of extending your home the process may be simpler than you think! This guide has been taken from planningportal.co.uk where you can find lots of information on planning. This guide is a snapshot so please do your own homework before taking on a project. This guidance reflects temporary increases to the size limits for single-storey rear extensions that must be completed by 30 May 2019, and the associated neighbour consultation scheme. An extension or addition to your house is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, subject to the following limits and conditions: • No more than half the area of land around the “original house”* would be covered by additions or other buildings. • No extension forward of the principal elevation or side elevation fronting a highway. • No extension to be higher than the highest part of the roof. • Single-storey rear extension must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house* by more than three metres if an attached house or by four metres if a detached house. • In addition, outside Article 2(3) designated land* and Sites of Special Scientific Interest the limit is increased to 6m if an attached house and 8m if a detached house until 30 May 2019. • These increased limits (between 3m and 6m and between 4m and 8m respectively) are subject to the prior notification of the proposal to the Local Planning Authority and the implementation of a neighbour consultation

scheme. If objections are received, the proposal might not be allowed. • Maximum height of a single-storey rear extension of four metres. • Extensions of more than one storey must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house* by more than three metres. • Maximum eaves height of an extension within two metres of the boundary of three metres. • Maximum eaves and ridge height of extension no higher than existing house. • Side extensions to be single storey with maximum height of four metres and width no more than half that of the original house. • Two-storey extensions no closer than seven metres to rear boundary. • Roof pitch of extensions higher than one storey to match existing house. • Materials to be similar in appearance to the existing house. • No verandas, balconies or raised platforms. • Upper-floor, side-facing windows to be obscure-glazed; any opening to be 1.7m above the floor. • On designated land* no permitted development for rear extensions of more than one storey. • On designated land no cladding of the exterior. • On designated land no side extensions.

* The term “original house” means the house as it was first built or as it stood on 1 July 1948 (if it was built before that date). Although you may not have built an extension to the house, a previous owner may have done so. * Designated land includes conservation areas, national parks and the Broads, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and World Heritage Sites. Please note: The permitted development allowances described here apply to houses and not to: • Flats and maisonettes • Converted houses or houses created through the permitted development rights to change use • Other buildings • Areas where there may be a planning condition, Article 4 Direction or other restriction that limits permitted development rights.

T

he UK Window group, responsible for manufacturing 10,000 + window, doors and conservatories each week, supplying some of the biggest household names in the industry, have struck a deal with local installers Fusion Home Improvements to be an outlet for their high quality products. The business model is to serve the trade and retail markets and to facilitate thisa new show centre and trade counter has been created in the Old Railway House in Sutterton on the main roundabout where the A16 meets the A17. Windows and doors are available in 5 days from order and at the site is a full stock of building plastics, underground drainage and rainwater goods which can be sold as they are or fully installed. “We needed more space to cope with the extra windows, doors and conservatories that will be passing through our firm, serving builders, independent window installers and the DIY market”. Owner Richard Fairbanks explains “this is all extra to the retail business that we have been and will continue to install to local customers. The move to Sutterton

“Fusion Home Improvements have always been competitive on price but the tie up with UK Window Group gives them access to unrivalled support and group bulk buying power..” sits us in between our old base in Pinchbeck and on the link road to our main target markets of Boston, Sleaford and King Lynn. We aim to serve as many people as possible hence the show centre, we have displays of windows, conservatories and composite doors so people can touch and feel the quality of the products. Both our windows and doors have unrivalled levels of security using Yale locks for added peace of mind for our customers.”.

Fusion Home Improvements have always been competitive on price but the tie up with UK Window Group gives them access to unrivalled support and group bulk buying power. “Pop in for a quote and a coffee, have a look at our products and see what you could save” for the opening month of October, just bring in a quote and it will be beaten, regardless of product. That applies to fully installed windows and doors, conservatories or building plastics.

“Windows and doors are available in 5 days from order...”

DS 7 Crossbac

A

At first sight, the DS 7 Crossback shows off conservative, rather than cool, characteristics. Yes, yes, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But this is my opinion, and someone needs to have one. On the move, body lean is kept to a minimum, even though the steering is spongy and dead - and it isn’t perked up by changing the DS into its Sport mode. Don’t let me rain on the DS7 Crossback’s parade too much, though. The French motor is best kept in its Comfort setting, so that

26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

you can make the most of its respectable ride quality. This car isn’t all about the zero to 62mph sprint, it’s far happier as a laid-back cruiser. But it can still pull okay, with the 2.0-litre diesel model doing the 0-62mph in just under 10 seconds. The DS marque is launching the Crossback with four different trim levels, and the Performance Line DS 7, as driven here, is likely to be the model to please the masses. This car gets 19-inch alloys, a gloss black grille, and LED lights. In the cabin, leather and Alcantara abound, while a 12-inch

touchscreen infotainment screen hogs the limelight. Playing second fiddle to the big display is a large analogue clock, perched above the ignition button. The infotainment system itself is intuitive and responsive and is supported by a bunch of touch sensitive switches for the cabin controls. But more remarkable in this car segment is the adding of an infrared night vision camera that projects a vivid picture onto the driver’s display. It picks out pedestrians and animals ahead of you, and, as I found out driving around Berkshire’s

ck 2018 First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups

unlit backroads, it works! The only drawback is that the clever driver aid is an option costing £1600. Room in the cabin is good for five-up and it’s a very comfortable car fore and aft. Indeed, the DS 7 Crossback’s flat floor means that a rear seat occupant sitting in the middle will still have space. What’s more, the car’s boot is generously proportioned with 555 litres of cargo capacity.

The all-new DS’ weak point is its price-tag. At over £30,000, other more established premium brands may seem more attractive. The BMW X3 and Volvo XC40 are examples of the stiff competition the up-to-the-minute French machine is up against. Still, being different is quite appealing, so it’ll be interesting to see what 2018 holds for the DS 7 Crossback. Watch this space!
