Welcome to the July issue

your LOCAL COMMUNITY

July is a lovely month, sunshine, school holidays and long days! What have you got planned to entertain the children over the summer holidays? If you’re looking for inspiration then make sure you look at our days out guide. Annette from The Village Midwives talks about people perception and I talk about all things vintage.. We also look at looking after your hair over the summer months and the benefits of massage for all ages. I would like to say a massive well done and thank you to Worth Farms at Holbeach Hurn for opening their ‘doors’ on Open Farm Sunday. We popped over as a family and had a brilliant few hours - my son especially being able to climb in and out all of the machinery. I would definitely recommend it for anyone next year! As much as I hate to say it as I am definitely a summer lover, we need to make the most of the long days and good weather as it soon will be gone and back to cooler days, so we have looked at how to make the most of your outdoor space this summer. Finally, Tim has taken the Isuzu D-Max for a spin to see how it stands up! All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

Love Local and support services charities Support is being drummed up for two armed forces charities in a fundraising campaign by Lincolnshire Co-op, together with local producers. As the RAF marks its 100th birthday this year, and to recognise the dedication of service people past and present, Lincolnshire Co-op is raising money for the Royal British Legion and the RAF Benevolent Fund. The charities will be supported through the Society’s Community Champions scheme throughout summer. Money raised for both charities will help them care for forces families, serving personnel and veterans who need help with a range of issues including funeral costs, debt, housing, mobility problems and medical care, and help train others to support them. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Community Coordinator Ryan Hodson said: “In Lincolnshire, the community around us is closely linked with the armed forces, and the charities we’re supporting do an important job caring for the health and wellbeing of service people past and present. We hope that by holding these activities, events and fundraising in our outlets together we can recognise the work they do and raise funds to help them continue it.” A donation will be made every time members shop in Lincolnshire Co-op stores using their dividend card. Colleague fundraising and proceeds from the carrier bag levy will also go into the pot. Lincolnshire Co-op food stores stock a range of local produce through the Society’s Love Local range, and some of these producers are also celebrating with specially created forces-themed goods. For each sale of these products 10p will also be donated through the scheme. They are: • Red Leicester Bastion in the Air cheese, made by the Grinstead family at Lymn Bank Farm near Skegness. • Bastion Pale Ale, brewed by Ferry Ales Brewery in Fiskerton. • Dambusters Beer Chutney, made by Jenny’s Jams of Lincoln.

4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk 4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

• Cupcakes produced by Lincolnshire Co-op’s bakery Gadsby’s during the summer. Ferry Ales Brewery’s Bastion Pale Ale has been brewed to promote the “Bastion in the Air” project which is raising awareness of Lincolnshire’s First World War aviation heritage. Ferry Ales Brewery’s Co-owner Mike Holman said: “It’s great to be supporting causes that help so many local people in Lincolnshire. The armed forces are close to our hearts and we’re thrilled to be involved.” There’ll be fundraising in lots of other ways at Lincolnshire Co-op outlets, including the chance to win a once in a lifetime trip on the Tornado Steam Locomotive from Lincoln to London. To enter, just have a go at the anagram competition at selected Lincolnshire Co-op stores. Customers can test their flying skills by taking part in a paper airplane competition and other games in Lincolnshire Co-op food stores during Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30th June - all in return for a small donation. Money has also been raised in June through a ‘guess where the teddy is’ game at Lincolnshire Co-op travel branches and ‘guess the teddy’s name’ at its funeral homes. There’ll also be three free summer food

events in Chapel St Leonards, Scunthorpe and Washingborough where Lincolnshire Co-op members can donate by taking part in games and the chance to win a food hamper, along with sampling tasty food and live 1940s style music. There’s no need to book, just bring your dividend card to sign in. More fundraising will come from collection boxes located in all stores where customers can donate whatever spare change they like. Regional Director for the RAF Benevolent Fund Mark Quinn said: “We are delighted that in this seminal year Lincolnshire Co-op have chosen to raise funds for the RAF family. We are extremely grateful to all involved for choosing to support the charity. “It is support like this which means the Fund has been able to stand side by side with the RAF for almost 100 years, offering financial, emotional and practical assistance when current and ex-service people need it most. “ Regional Fundraising Manager for the East Royal British Legion Jo Ticehurst said: “We are very excited and feel privileged to be chosen as a Community Champion until September. “It’s set to be a special year in Lincolnshire as combined with RAF 100, there’s lots to celebrate in the county this summer. We look forward to working with Lincolnshire Co-op raising funds and awareness for those who served and are still serving who need our help today.”

Dementia week

In response to Dementia Action Week, local businesses have been uniting to take action, big or small, to improve the lives of people affected by dementia. Organisations have been busy pedalling for pennies, selling cakes, attending awareness sessions and looking their best in blue. Throughout the Market Place Alzheimer’s Society forget-menot logos have been “blossoming”, each sponsored by a local business. Young people from Nacro and local primary schools have also been getting involved, with their creative efforts proudly displayed in Boston Stump for all to see. In the UK, one person develops dementia every three minutes. Yet too many people living with dementia face the condition alone and are excluded from society. Boston Dementia Action Alliance is determined to create a dementia-friendly community where people with dementia are included and supported to live the lives they want. They want to hear your ideas of how to do this. A suggestions box can be found at Greyfriars Surgery, South Square, Boston. A number of events and activities are yet to take place, including a tea dance and family

event. soundLINCS Celebrates 20 Years of Music-Making On 1st June Lincolnshire based community music charity soundLINCS celebrated 20 years of music development, reaching across Lincolnshire, the East Midlands and beyond and bringing music to hundreds of thousands of people. With over 40,000 workshops delivered, three quarters of a million participants from ages 0 to 100 and more than 1,000 videos and music tracks published online or on CD, it’s been a busy 20 years, and soundLINCS are showing no signs of letting up as they move on to the next. To mark the birthday they hosted a drinks reception on the day, bringing together people involved with the Company spanning both decades to reminisce, party and play some music together as they look back over the years of music-making. Then, on 2nd June, several groups from soundLINCS’ New Tricks project came together for a public performance at The Blue Room in Lincoln. New Tricks is soundLINCS’ Older Adults Music Service across Lincolnshire, supported by funding from Arts Council England and the Postcode Community Trust, and the event was an irreverent, anarchic musical extravaganza, bringing an eclectic mix of music from an eclectic mix of people! This marks the beginning of an exciting year of events and sharing for soundLINCS, who will be embarking on some large new projects,

sharing toolkits and academic research they have created on an international stage and hosting events to hopefully get may more people across the region making music. soundLINCS CEO NikkiKate Heyes MBE said: “We are thrilled to have reached our 20th year, it has been an exhilarating journey and the birthday celebration are the start of yet another exciting year of growth and development for soundLINCS” “We’ve got some incredible plans and aspirations throughout the year and we hope that as many people as possible will get involved throughout.” For further information about the celebrations or to find out more about soundLINCS, visit www. soundlincs.org, visit the soundLINCS facebook page: www.facebook.com/ soundLINCS or twitter: www. twitter.com/soundLINCS, email info@soundlincs.org or call 01522 510073.

Councillor’s Column Cllr Claire Rylott

n.co.uk

info@simplybosto

Cllr Claire Rylott, pictured, is Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for tourism, arts, culture and heritage. Boston has some of the finest heritage with grand architecture dating back to the 13th Century when the town had huge wealth generated by the second most important port in the country. It was the first to have a connection with those seeking religious freedom who would come to be known the world over as the Pilgrim Fathers. But it also has a modern arts and cultural offer. Cllr Rylott is concerned with enhancing the town’s reputation and encouraging everyone to promote it to a worldwide audience.

I

t is the day after the royal wedding; whether you are a royalist or not, the national newsreaders are reporting “What a good advert for England yesterday”, the sun was shining and many had turned up in Windsor to watch the wedding. The world was seeing England at its best, and I heard more than once from those reporting “This has got to be good for tourism in our country”. Part of my portfolio in the town is to promote tourism - a corporate priority that is vitally important for our economy. The only time I have had a call from local and national media is when we have had some vandalism in the town. I asked them to call back when they wanted to report on a good news story. Vandalism happens throughout our county, even the Knights of Lincoln suffered damage last year. We have a minority in our town who like causing trouble, but we have a majority

on the case. Thanks to the support of BTAC (Boston Town Area Committee) we are in the process of replacing our seats and bins around the town. Boston Stump has more than 100,000 visitors a year. The Bollywood Ball held there last year was a fantastic evening. I was asked to auction lots at this event and the evening raised more than £13,000. They have been very busy fundraising in support of their Passion for People Project, and have recently put a bid in to the Heritage Lottery Fund to support their project. I am delighted to say Boston Borough Council has supported their bid. Around our town centre we have Blackfriars Theatre that goes from strength to strength. I understand “The Full Monty “ was an absolute hit. Further along that street is the Guildhall, which is a fantastic building to use for

The Friends of the Cemetery are getting involved this year. With help from the bloom committee and the borough council they have recreated the bog garden at the cemetery. I took a wander around the grounds not long ago. It is so tranquil; the flora and fauna on that site are amazing. who want to continue to improve the place where they live and work. Somehow, together, we need to get that message out to the big wide world, then we will find more people will want to come and visit, live and work here. I was delighted to be offered a seat on the Greater Lincolnshire LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) visitor economy board recently. We now have a voice for Boston. At my first meeting the chairman enquired as to what appetite would there be if districts were asked to introduce new street furniture. There was silence around the room. I then had great pleasure in reporting that Boston is already 6 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

functions, even wedding ceremonies, together with Fydell House next door, a perfect place for a wedding reception. The walled gardens to the rear are a hidden gem, well worth a visit. The new art deco garden in Central Park is now complete and it has transformed a corner, but I still have lots of ideas for the park. Boston in Bloom is working hard - three gold awards in a row for the town, and all-out effort being made to achieve another. The Friends of the Cemetery are getting involved this year. With help from the bloom committee and the borough council they have recreated the bog garden at the cemetery. I

took a wander around the grounds not long ago. It is so tranquil; the flora and fauna on that site are amazing. I understand the Town Team is under new leadership and hopefully will be able to offer support to the businesses in the town. I have set up a Women in Business lunch event in the town. We meet bi-monthly and new members are always welcome. Last year I championed the new Visit Boston website (www.visitbostonuk.com). Many groups were struggling to advertise events they were holding, they needed help, and couldn’t always afford to promote in the local papers. Take a look, it has lots of information about Boston. There are great opportunities regarding tourism for Boston leading up to Mayflower 2020 and beyond. Kuoni world tour operators have visited our town and were very impressed with what they saw. Boston features as a destination to visit within the Mayflower Trail https://www.mayflower400uk.org/ This is only a snippet of what happens in our town, and one of the common denominators in all this is volunteers and sponsors. I am ever grateful for all the voluntary work and sponsorship that is given to our town. All town centres are changing and will continue to do so. Supermarkets have taken away many small businesses, and Internet shopping is killing our high streets. We live in a multicultural society. Embrace the changes that are happening in our town. Let us all promote this great town as we should, it has so much to offer.

Cllr Claire Rylott, Portfolio holder for Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage, Boston Borough Council.

Scams Awareness Scams Awareness Month is a yearly campaign which aims to create a network of confident, alert consumers who ‘don’t miss a trick’ when it comes to scams. Whether you’re an individual consumer looking to protect yourself and your family from scams, or an organisation or group representing consumers, your efforts during Scams Awareness Month 2018 are important. You can help to spread the message that scams are crimes that can happen to anyone and we don’t need to be embarrassed if we fall victim to them. A scam is a scheme to con people out of their money. Almost three-quarters of people have been targeted by scammers in the last 2 years. Most victims don’t report scams. But the impacts can be huge - people can: • lose their life savings. • suffer emotional trauma or mental health problems. • lose their confidence. • suffer long-term health problems.

Different types of scams Investment scams They may offer shares, or a range of investment “opportunities”. Generally targeted at the 55+ age group and often sophisticated enough to lure in even experienced investors. Also called “boiler room” scams because they use high pressure sales to create a sense of urgency. Citizens Advice found average losses reported last year to be £20,000. “Phantom goods” scams These scams are when items are bought online but are never delivered. They can be targeted through sites including online marketplaces and social media. A rising number of people are being caught out by “phantom goods” scams. Citizens Advice found the average loss to be £1,100.

Computer software service or internet provider scam Victims are cold called and told that there is a problem with their computer. They are talked through the log-on steps so the fraudster can gain remote access to the computer, for which they charge “fees” and gain access to personal and financial information. This was the most common scam reported to Citizens Advice Consumer Service in 2015-16. Courier scams Usually start with an unsolicited telephone call or text advising that a bank fraud has been detected. The scam is completed when the caller attends the victim’s home or uses an innocent courier to collect their bank card. This method is sometimes also used with pension scams. Your bank will never call at your home to collect your cards. Money Mules This is where an individual allows their bank account to be used to move money from criminal funds. Young people and students are particularly vulnerable as they are often short of cash. They may be approached with what looks like a genuine job offer, asking them to receive money into their bank account and transfer it onto someone else, keeping some of the cash for themselves. If caught, the person targeted may be implicated in money laundering themselves. You can find out more about current scams on Action Fraud’s website at www.actionfraud. police.uk.

Citizens Advice

...give free, confidential, impartial and independe nt advice to help you solve your problems

As a nation, we still don’t talk enough about scams. 7 out of 10 people targeted by a scam do not tell anyone about it, including friends, family or the authorities. Talking about scams can help reduce the stigma and help protect others from falling victim.

Top tips to avoid scams If you haven’t bought a ticket – you can’t win it. You shouldn’t have to pay anything to get a prize. If you’re contacted out of the blue – be suspicious. Say no to coldcall investments and pensions reviews. Your bank will never phone you to ask for your PIN or your online banking password. Genuine computer firms do not make unsolicited phone calls to help you fix your computer.

Suspect a scam? GET ADVICE from the Citizens Advice consumer service 03454 04 05 06. or 03454 04 05 05 for a Welshspeaking adviser. If it is a scam this will automatically be reported to Trading Standards. REPORT scams and suspected scams to Action Fraud 0300 123 2040 www. actionfraud.police.uk If debit cards, online banking or cheques are involved, contact the bank or credit card company. TALK to family, friends, neighbours so that they can avoid scams.

School News

Boston High School A Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk

As part of the 2017-2018 Student Leadership Team, a Women’s initiative was set up to find ways to raise aspirations of young girls in the school. They asked students, staff and their families to donate books to be sold by the SLT in a book sale — the money raised (£362.40) from this was put towards buying new books for the library in a dedicated section for books written by or about inspirational women. Their incredible work has gained the attention of national figures such as The Female Lead, a charity designed to highlight the work of inspirational women, and Matt Warman MP, who will visit the school in June to see the efforts so far. A huge congratulations to Cai Cherry and the supporting head students and teachers for this successful project. Year 7 student, Eden Gardener, travelled to London where she competed in a karate competition. Entering in the Green and Blue belts category, where the oldest competitor was 15, 12-year-old Eden

fought one-on-one in three highly competitive rounds and was successful in achieving first place. This amazing achievement has started her on a journey towards international success. Eden is a part of TKFGB and only the top three fighters from this organisation are qualified to go to the World Championships in Canada in October this year. As a school, we are very proud and wish her the best of luck in the upcoming world championships.

Boston College - Pilot project will teach students about modern slavery

B

oston College will become the first college in the UK to join forces with the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) to teach students about modern slavery and labour exploitation within its curriculum. The pilot project for the 2018-19 academic year will see a number of activities taking place from September, helping students gain a better understanding of modern slavery and labour exploitation. Masterclasses will be held with professionals giving their insights on the work to tackle modern slavery and support victims. Tutorials will be created for staff and students, who will be equipped with a comprehensive knowledge of employment rights. They will also take part in a unique visual art competition interpreting the term ‘gangmaster’. The project, which supports the GLAA’s Prevent strategy, will reach out to local employers to help them better understand labour exploitation in the workplace. A launch event was held at the college on Friday 1 June, with attendees including Minister for Crime, Safeguarding, Vulnerability and Women Victoria Atkins, Member of Parliament for Boston and Skegness Matt Warman, and Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner Marc Jones.

10 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Dawn Telford, Head of Learner Services at Boston College, said: “This new partnership will provide opportunities for not only our learners, but also for staff and parents to learn about issues of modern slavery and labour exploitation. “It is important our learners understand their rights in the workplace, and by providing this information it safeguards our young people who will be moving in to employment. “Boston and surrounding areas such as South Holland have a historically high concentration of gangmasters serving the agricultural and food processing sectors. “Over the last 15 years, the area has also seen significant levels of migration from other EU countries, especially Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. This has meant that more than one quarter of students studying at the college come from a nonBritish background.” GLAA Director of Strategy Darryl Dixon said: “We are delighted to be working with Boston College on this ground-breaking initiative. The college is perfectly placed within its community to raise awareness of modern slavery and labour abuse, as well as being able to take appropriate action to help anyone who may have been exploited.” Minister for Crime, Safeguarding, Vulnerability and Women Victoria Atkins said: “I am pleased that the GLAA and Boston College have created a

course which will help raise awareness and build a stronger insight to effectively tackle this awful crime. “This government is taking a world leading approach, by using the Modern Slavery Act and reforms to the GLAA, to provide law enforcement the powers they need to identify victims, protect vulnerable people and bring offenders to justice. “The GLAA has played a pivotal role in our fight against exploitation by using its new powers to investigate labour market offences, arrest employers who may unscrupulously be exploiting their workers, and identify and refer potential victims through the National Referral Mechanism to ensure the right support is given to those in need.” At the end of the project, the GLAA will make a range of educational resources for all other colleges and post-16 education providers across the UK freely available. If you have concerns about labour exploitation, speak to the GLAA’s intelligence team on 0800 432 0804 or email intelligence@glaa.gsi.gov.uk. Alternatively, call the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700. 10% of colleges nationally. We could not achieve these heights without the support of our employer and delivery partners who continue to work with us to develop Lincolnshire’s best Apprenticeship talent.”

‘B

e your authentic self’ said the woman leading a meditation I went to last week. Be my authentic self?! Who is she kidding! I wear so many hats (midwife, mother, wife, domestic goddess, pta member, counsellor, gardener, friend, teacher, healer, daughter to name but a few) that sometimes it’s quite hard to figure out which one I am supposed to be when I’m by myself. I’m sure a psychiatrist would have a field day with this, but my life is how it is, and you learn to roll with punches and get good at switching hats. If this isn’t enough, there is a theory that hundreds if not thousands of different versions of you exist at any one time. Your own view of yourself, as well the perceptions and thoughts of every person you meet, smile at or talk to are also out there, floating around. You are not one person, you are multiple people all at the same time. If we can say this about how people view us, the same can be said for how we view others. Depending on what walk of life we have contact with people, will depend on how we see them. The problem with this, as with all human beings, is people don’t always meet our expectations. Someone who we can greatly admire as a colleague, might make the worse friend or confidante. A great friend might not make a great employee. The person with whom you have a baby might not turn out to be the amazing supportive partner or

parent you had hoped. On the recommendation of a friend, I have been watching ‘The Let Down’ on Netflix. The trials and tribulations of becoming a mother for the first time, especially about things not turning out quite how your expected or how you expected other people to turn out. When things don’t go to plan, it can make us feel quite low. Our confidence, hopes and ideals for the future all change. We can feel trapped and sometimes even hopeless. We lose our own identity, our ‘authentic self’ and become absorbed in the negative and monotonous minutiae of parenthood. When our babies are small, everything is about them – endless feeding, changing and soothing. This feels a thousand times more stressful when we don’t have good support at home. Even getting out the house feels like a mountain that isn’t worth climbing. These are the times when it is the most important to get out – physically and emotionally being surrounded by the same 4 walls can leave us feeling worse. Be brave, get out – where isn’t important. Just get out and feel the wind in your hair. You can apply this to almost any aspect of your life… when it feels scary to jump, that’s exactly when you need to jump, otherwise you end up staying in the same place your whole life.

Do you suffer from …

“I Don’t Know What To Wear Moments?” If you do, relax, because very few people are born with a natural sense of style and Oasis For Hair have launched a brand new Personal Image Design Service that can help you.

How?

By gently taking you through a step by step process of Colour and Figure analysis which reveals exactly what clothes and make up you should choose to both look good … and feel great! Imagine … no more ‘I don’t know what to wear moments’. No more panic buying or fear of standing out for all the wrong reasons. Instead imagine clothes you love to wear and being noticed for all the right reasons. Here are real quotes from people who felt like you do now, before they had their colour and figure analysis sessions.

Joanne says

“All my life I’ve been confused and unsure about what to wear. Since my analysis sessions I see myself in a totally different way. Gone are my safe blacks and baggy comfortable clothes, instead I’ve finally had the confidence to lose weight and be more confident in every aspect of my life!’

Debbie says

“I’m an artist so I thought I knew all about colour choice … but boy was I wrong! Since my analysis sessions I feel much more decisive when I go clothes shopping. I’ve also enjoyed many positive comments from family and friends about what I’m wearing. I would thoroughly recommend the experience!” Colour & Figure Analysis will also save you thousands in future because once you’ve had it done you’ll be far less likely to buy clothes that end up being ignored in your wardrobe because you don’t feel right in them.

If you want to know more, come to the next Colour & Body Analysis information evening held monthly on Tuesday nights at Oasis For Hair. Tickets are FREE but you do need to pre-book to qualify for the Half Price Analysis discount offer you’ll hear about on the night. Massage For All I know adults have hectic lives, but it seems to me that our children kids are potentially the ones who really need the occasional massage. They juggle school, sports, chores, mean kids, social lives, acne, peer pressure and about a hundred or so other stressors. So, why do so many spas discourage or limit massage therapy for the under-18 crowd? The vast majority of massage professionals will readily admit that no one is too young to appreciate and benefit from a good massage. In fact, the massage experience can begin as early as infancy and continue throughout life, as long as a licensed professional is used. Studies have repeatedly shown that massage helps kids and adults of all ages with stress and stress hormone levels, mood and behavioral problems. The immune system can also enjoy a much-needed boost from a regular rubdown. Plus, they’re just fun and relaxing, and who doesn’t need a little bit of that? In addition, physically active teens are sure to appreciate the sports-related benefits of massage. For example, massage therapy has been proven to aid sore muscles and specific pain (such as lower back spasms or hamstring troubles). Other teen-specific pros include the fact that massage relieves the symptoms of PMS; plus, studies have shown that people are more alert following a session. But there are a couple of factors to take into consideration before booking

lifting you your child onto a massage table. First, younger kids only need a 15 or 20-minute session to get the job done because an entire hour would be too overwhelming. In fact, parents can learn to give basic massages to younger kids at home. Since teens would probably hate at the idea of a ‘mummy massage’, they’re best left to the capable hands of massage therapists!

Summer Haircare

Don’t let the sun, dull your shine! Summer is round the corner and the sun is ready to shower its’ wrath on you, so pick-up your armors and get ready for the upcoming battle. You got to kick the sun in the ass and protect your hair from the cruel and merciless sun. The sun’s heat causes damage to your hair and makes it dry. So, it’s better to avoid any hair treatments or too much hair coloring during summer. Prevent your hair from splitting and becoming dry, damaged and dull this summer with these tips.

Apply conditioner

As the sun is already known to make the hair dry and fizzy during the summer season. So, make sure that you apply a good quality conditioner that suits your hair. If you go for swimming during summers do apply the leave-in conditioner on your hair and don’t forget to wear a cap.

Avoid dryers

You should keep your hair as natural as possible and avoid blow dryers and curlers. Do wash your hair earlier so that you get time to dry your hair in the air and not with a dryer. As the sun’s strong heat is enough to damage your hair during summers so we suggest you not to use styling

iron for your hair as they are high heating agents which can completely destroy your hair.

Trim your hair

This will help you to take care of your hair-ends as during summers the hair usually develops split ends a bit too frequently and the hair also becomes dry which does not look good. So, to give your hair a new life you must shorten them during summers.

Bring on those scarves and hats

You need to cover that head of yours before getting out in the sun. Put on that hat or cover your hair with that scarf and protect it from the harmful radiations of the sun.

Allow the roots of your hair to breathe. Never strangle your hair by tying it up tightly. When you do such a thing, sweat gathers on your scalp and prevents them from escaping. This results in the loss of hair and dullness. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 17

Focus on Kirton: A town of Famous Faces

Dame Sarah Ann Swift, who was born in Kirton Skeldyke, was a nurse and founder in 1916 of the Royal College of Nursing and introduced the Nurse registration. She was born on the Blossom Hall Estate at Kirton Skeldyke, daughter of a tenant farmer she had been Matron of Guy’s Hospital (1901–09), then retired, but in the First World War she returned to this position for the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St John of Jerusalem in England. In 1919 she was made Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) for her services to nursing. A ward at St Thomas Hospital, London is named after her. Royal College of Nursing With help from the Hon. Arthur Stanley (Chairman of the War Committee) she set up the College of Nursing. A letter was sent out to all the training hospitals outlining the idea pointing out that although there was disagreement on issues relating to registration there was a need to coordinated nursing and all trained nurses should unite in one democratic organisation with the power in the hands of the membership. By 1918 there were 13,000 Members. They elected the first council and set up Centres (later to be called Branches). The College of Nursing later became the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) modelled on the Royal College of Physicians and surgeons. On 27 March 1916 the College of Nursing was registered. It became the Royal College of Nursing in 1947. Joseph Gilbert: Master of HMS Resolution Joseph Gilbert (1732–1831) was a British naval officer who was Master of HMS Resolution on the second voyage of Captain James Cook. As Master he was responsible for a number of specific duties, especially navigation. Joseph was born in Kirton, and was baptised in St Peter & St Paul’s Church on the 1st June 1732. He was the youngest of the eight children of John & Elizabeth (nee Armstrong) Gilbert. He later moved to Freiston, where he was married to Frances Plant on the 16th November 1758, and 20 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

they had four children, all baptised in St James’ Church, but he made the Royal Navy his career. It is not known at what age he went to sea, but from 1764 to 1769 he was the master on HMS Guernsey (32 guns) surveying the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador (both provinces of Canada). Gilbert Inlet and Gilbert River could be named after him!! Joseph subsequently became master of the HMS Pearl (32 guns), which surveyed Plymouth Sound, and of the HMS Asia (64 guns), until he was selected by Captain James Cook to serve as master of the HMS Resolution on his second great Pacific voyage (1172 – 1775). Cook thought highly of him both as a seaman and as a surveyor and draughtsman, paying tribute particularly to his judgement. During the voyage Joseph produced numerous finely executed charts; many of them embellished with charming watercolour drawings and perspective views. He was slightly wounded during the skirmish at Eromanga on 4th August 1774. On 17 January 1773, HMS Resolution was the first ship to cross the Antarctic Circle and crossed twice more on the voyage. The third crossing, on 3 February 1774, was the most southerly penetration. On his return to England, he was

rewarded with the gift of Cook’s watch. When his sea going days were over, Joseph took on the position of Master Attendant at Sheerness Dockyard, moved to Woolwich and then to Portsmouth where he served with the rank of Lieutenant from 1776 to 1791 From 1791 until 1802 his last post was as Master Attendant at Deptford. Joseph retired in 1802 and lived in Hampshire with his unmarried daughter Frances (b 1764). His eldest child George (1759 -1786) sailed with Cook on his third voyage and produced a journal, and Richard the second son (1767 – 1845) also entered the Navy. Joseph is mentioned on a tablet to the local people with connections to Australia and the South Seas in St Botolph’s Church, Boston (the Stump). The plaque is mounted on the north wall of the tower.

Hot tubs, spas and Jacuzzis are fast becoming the must-have garden luxury. The ultimate indulgence for outdoor play, they can cost from around £3,000 upwards. But in making such an expensive investment you really should visit a showroom before taking the plunge and get some expert advice. Make sure whatever brand / model you choose can stand up to UK weather too – ie it should be able to withstand plenty of rain. And whatever hot tub you go for, make sure it’s well insulated with a tightly fitting cover as this will help save energy costs and keep it free of garden debris too.

BBQs Outdoor dining is one of the highlights of summer, enjoying a relaxed meal outside with your nearest and dearest. BBQs come in all sorts and sizes - before you buy, have some idea on the type of things you want to cook on it regularly and for how many diners.

A small circular grill is ideal for traditional barbecue food like burgers and sausages, but if you want to cook bigger joints or fish you’ll need something larger. Do you want the whole BBQ experience of lighting the charcoal, fanning the flames and waiting for them to reach the right temperature before you get cooking, or would you rather use gas, which is far less time consuming? With everything from disposable to industrial / catering size BBQs available, not to mention chimineas and fire pits, make sure you set a budget before you shop.

With summer just around the corner, what better time to turn your attention to your garden? As the temperatures start to climb, chances are you’ll be wanting to spend more time outside. As well as a play area for children, your garden can be a great space for adults to enjoy too - in essence it’s another room. So why not treat yourself to a few little luxuries and to turn it into a haven where you can unwind, entertain and play!

Ponds / water features Why not bring nature back into your garden by adding a pond or water feature and create your very own aquatic oasis. As well as being a soothing addition, it’s another way of adding a touch of elegance and style. Match the size of your pond / feature to the space you have available, to make sure it does not overpower your garden. Visit your local garden centre for ideas and expert advice. But remember, if you have children - especially babies and toddlers - it will be necessary to add a cover or fence it off to make is secure.

Lighting

Garden furniture

Garden lights are a great way of increasing your home security as well as adding atmosphere to your outdoor spaces. Why not create impact by highlighting trees, shrubs or statues with different lighting

effects using floodlights, garden lanterns or security lights. If your budget is a bit smaller, why not add some twinkling fairy lights to a trellis, or trees for a low-cost alternative or place solar lights along footpaths to highlight them.

Decorations

No, we’re not talking garden gnomes, although these could be a great addition too! Give your garden some glamour with some beautiful decorations like statues, planters, sundials, ornamental bird tables or even wind chimes. Add some creativity and focal points to your outdoor space with garden art or an unusual sculpture. Whatever additions you decide, make your garden a place of fun this summer.

Spruce up your garden with some new furniture this summer. As well as traditional table and chair patio sets, there are loads of great funky designs and styles available to suit every budget. Hammocks, swing chairs, sofas and day beds are all great contemporary choices for lying back and relaxing in the great outdoors. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 23

Summer Driving Tips Whether it’s the daily commute, the school run or a long journey to a holiday retreat, driving in the summer has its challenges... and is very different to driving in the depths of winter. As well as glare, which can also be treacherous in winter, you’ve got high temperatures to contend with, which can make your car behave differently. Roads are also often busier, especially during school holidays, on airport and port approaches, and in and around popular tourist destinations. So before you head off again, take a look at these summer driving tips from RAC Breakdown Cover to keep you safe and moving.

Summer Car Maintenance Modern cars largely cope fine with summer weather and driving conditions. However, a few things can crop up – some are nothing to worry about, while others you should be mindful of. Don’t worry about: • Pools of water under your car – These are caused by condensed water from the air conditioning system • Smoke from air vents – Unless the smoke is acrid, it’s just water vapour produced by the air conditioning unit that hasn’t had time to condense. • Roaring from the engine bay – This is the

cooling fan turning on and off • Less power – If your car seems more lethargic in summer, this is probably because the air is warmer and less dense, giving the engine a little less “oomph”. On the flipside, you should be aware of the following: • Tyres – high temperatures and under-inflation exacerbate existing damage and weak spots, increasing the risk of punctures. Before setting off, check tyre condition and pressures on your vehicle, as well as anything you might be towing.

• Overheating – check your coolant reservoir, look for wet or white marks on coolant hoses and listen for the fan when your engine is idle. If you think anything’s amiss, have it looked at ASAP. • Fuel efficiency – use a roof box and close windows on the motorway to reduce drag; start air conditioning when doors and windows are closed, and turn it off when the car has cooled; and increase tyre pressure if you’re carrying extra passengers. • Glare – keep glass clean, repair scratches and chips, and wear non light-reactive sunglasses.

Hay Fever The onset of hay fever can prove dangerous for drivers – if you sneeze at 70mph you lose your vision for as much as 100 metres! Research from Halfords suggests 27% of UK drivers suffer from symptoms, and one in three admit to being distracted by hay fever. There are numerous remedies available to help (always choose a non-drowsy

24 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

form when driving), and wearing sunglasses, keeping a tissue to hand and closing air vents and windows can make your journey more comfortable. But if you’re severely affected by hay fever, it might be best to delay your journey – you don’t want to be one of the 2 million drivers thought to have had an accident, near miss or lost control of their vehicle as a direct result of hay fever.

Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 PROS ‘N’ CONS à Appearance à Clout à Practicality à Wallowy

4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

(1.9 4X4 Artic Trucks AT35 Double Cab Auto - as tested)

W

hen it comes to getting the job done, there aren’t many pick-ups more hardcore than the Isuzu D-Max – a muscular all-rounder that just works. Master of all trades and the perfect blend of rugged capability, whether off-road or load-lugging; paired with performance and comfort. The D-Max is masculine enough on its own. But marry it with Icelandic vehicle modifier, Arctic Trucks, and it gets an extra dose of testosterone. The customised, off-road inclined D-Max AT35 has been offered in Nordic territories for some time, but over the last couple of years, UK consumers have been able to have a slice of the action. The Arctic Trucks conversion can be had in two variants: the four-door Double Cab I drove, and the extended cab. Both are built on the existing D-Max Utah specification, but add a few grand to the price-tag. The biggest difference between the AT35 and a normal D-Max are the outsized 35inch tyres and the broader track. The truck has also been elevated by an extra 55mm. The tyres are so substantial that Arctic Trucks reckons the D-Max can glide over slush and snow, rather than plunge into it. Other outer surface conversions include burlier side steps, and wider wheel-arches. The standard Isuzu suspension has been given a seeing to as well, with superior Fox Performance dampers made to endure the toughest impacts. The additional ground

clearance means you won’t ground it out on any off-tarmac obstructions you’re likely to find in Britain. What’s more, the approach and departure angles enable it to confront almost perpendicular inclines without throwing a wobbly. The D-Max still goes about its business without upmarket hill descent control, but the low-range four-wheel drive and manual gear selector on the automatic transmission lets you do things the oldschool way, via engine braking. The 164PS 2.0-litre oil-burner might not be as hard-hitting or sophisticated as Mitsubishi’s L200 pickup on the asphalt, but it has bags of torque from low down to tug you out of bother. Not surprisingly, the Isuzu D-Max AT35 isn’t meant to be a motor you can hoon around twisty back roads; both performance and handling are impacted by the embellishments. It won’t outmanoeuvre BMW’s X5 if that’s what you imagine, but then that’s a long way from the intended market. What does amaze is the AT35’s talent to achieve and sustain motorway speeds without much tyre roar. The ride is very

à Max speed: 112 mph à 0-62 mph: 15 secs (est) à Combined mpg: 36.2 à Engine layout: 1898cc four-cylinder turbo diesel à Max. power (PS): 164 à CO2: 220 g/km

easy-going, too, although it does become quite wallowy the quicker you go, due to the balloon-like tyres. Hypothetically, you could use this special version of the D-Max to do the daily commute, but that would almost be an insult to its mud-plugging abilities.
