Welcome to the January issue Happy New Year! A blink of an eye and that was Christmas over! This year is the first for us as a family of four as my baby girl is five months old and my little boy is two and a half. This year has been magical as my toddler has really started to ‘get’ what it’s all about. We managed to rack up a whopping five Santa visits during December….two trips to Baytree, Breakfast with at the Spirit of Endeavour, a Christmas party with relatives at Holbeach Servicemans Club and at Johnsons Garden Centre. For me Christmas is all about family, we tend to alternate between my family and the in-laws each year. Either way it’s a house full and that’s what I love, a busy festive period and this year it was our turn to do lunch! To be honest I prefer being at home so I always welcome it when it comes round to us. But now it’s all about the new year and as we head into 2018 we can look back on the past year and plan our resolutions for the next one. There’s all the usual ones – lose weight, learn a new skill, have a better work/life balance but I feel fortunate that I am pretty happy with my lot at the minute, so mine is quite simple and to take more care of myself. Being a mum of two has certainly pushed me this year as well as running a business and home and to be honest I haven’t really looked after myself so that’s what 2018 is all about. Back to this edition and we look at looking after animals in the winter as well as weighing up if it’s better to move house or improve your existing home. This time of year is often a period when we contemplate packing up and moving, so make sure you check out our guide before you potentially make such a costly decision. Finally I would like to say a huge thank you to the team behind Simply magazines, from the people in the office selling adverts, writing features, our design studio processing artwork and the accounts office to the team of distributors who do such an amazing job of getting the magazine to you every month come rain or shine and of course our loyal advertisers who use the magazine to promote their business every month, without them we simply wouldn’t be able to produce the magazine. As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is to have a great month and a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!

£108,000 raised for community groups Members of Lincolnshire Co-op have clubbed together to raise £108,000 for local community groups. From scouts and sports clubs to health networks, there’s an army of groups around the county and they’re all making life better for people in their communities. That’s why, together with members, Lincolnshire Co-op has been fundraising for 167 local groups through its Community Champions scheme. Over 147,000 members helped raise the total simply by shopping with their dividend card. Senior Community and Education Co-ordinator Ben James said: “We’re delighted to have raised such a brilliant amount for these community groups. “They each have a huge impact on the areas around them, whether they’re Rainbow or Scouts clubs, sports groups or dementia support networks, and this money will help them continue making a difference to people’s lives. “We can’t wait to see how this money benefits them all.” A donation was made through the

Community Champions scheme every time a member shopped in a Lincolnshire Co-op outlet in September, October and November. Proceeds from the carrier bag charge and colleagues’ Halloween fundraising also went into the pot. The total is divided up between the

groups, according to how much has been raised locally. For more information about the Community Champions scheme and a list of other groups benefiting from the quarter, visit www.lincolnshire.coop/community/ community-champions/previous-champions.

Friends of Witham Way dissolved An appeal has been made for volunteers to come forward to help maintain Witham Way Country Park. For the past 16 years a passionate team has worked diligently to help transform the 38 acres into one of the prides of Boston. But now chairman, Peter Desforges, at the age of 78, has decided to hang up his gardening gloves. And the team of friends, family and colleagues that he forged into the Friends of Witham Way have also decided now is the time for them to take things a bit easier. Peter, who became involved in the park almost by default, and ended up being Friends’ chairman for 16 years, said: “It was a very difficult decision to make to dissolve the group.” He said it was made all the more difficult when, earlier this year, he was awarded the Robert Lauberts Environmental and Community Award because of his love of Witham Way Country Park. The presentation was made after the judging tour for this year’s Boston in Bloom Awards. The country park has been

4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk 4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

instrumental in helping Boston gain three gold awards. Peter said: “I couldn’t speak when the award was made to me. I was just filling up.” Over the years the group masterminded the footpath routes – hard and mown – tamed the brambles, planted trees and developed the popular picnic area. Led by Peter they fell into a weekly routine of cutting, trimming, planting and weeding, helping make the park a favoured location for Bostonians and visitors. Peter said: “It would be a crying shame it if slipped back now. I hope someone comes forward to carry on the work the Friends have done. It’s not too onerous – about eight man hours a week keeps on top of it.” He said he would continue to be a regular visitor to the park – he lives about seven minutes’ walk away, and would be happy to pass on his knowledge and pass on the Friends’ equipment to a new group. He knows every square inch and almost everyone who passed by called out a welcome to him.

“It would suit someone newly retired with time to spare – as I had when I first became involved. It keeps you fit and active. People appreciate what they have here on their doorstep. We have had very little trouble in here because they know some of us are always around.” If you want to help carry on the good work of the Friends of Witham Way Country Park please contact Jenny Moore by calling 01205 314 583 or email jenny.moore@boston.gov.uk

Homelessness A countywide strategy for dealing with the plight of the homeless has been adopted by Boston Borough Council. The draft strategy has been developed by the Lincolnshire County Homelessness Strategy Group, made up of every housing association in the county, statutory and voluntary organisations, to cover the period 2017 to 2021. The group’s three previous strategies have been recognised as best practice partnership models by the Government. The latest strategy was formulated following a review of homelessness in the county and consultation with a wide range of stakeholders and service users. The draft strategy’s section on Boston concedes that the area has some of the highest private rents in the region and lowest full-time wages, presenting affordability challenges. It has also had one of the largest population increases in the last Census in 2011. The new strategy tackles supply of affordable housing, both rented and purchased, working with partners across statutory and voluntary sectors to reduce homelessness, tackling rough sleeping and the barriers which prevent rough sleepers from moving away from the streets

New Owners at Tates Tate’s Fish & Chips has recently been taken over by longterm employee Sam Cilek who in his own words say: “There has been a fi h restaurant on this site since the 10th October 1903 and I am passionate about continuing with tradition. Subsequently Tate’s was founded in 1959. Under the family’s stewardship Tate’s has become well known for quality fish and chips and has developed into the award winning fish restaurant that is so loved today. Under new management Tate’s remains a family business and we take great pride in the quality of our food and excellent service that is provided by our friendly staff ” A glance at Tate’s page on Trip Advisor shows very quickly that the Fish and Chip shop is held in very high regard, not just by the locals but by people who travel to Boston specifi cally to pay them a visit. There is even a review on there from a couple who travel from Skegness for Tate’s – high praise indeed when people travel from a seaside town with its fair share of chippies!

Saved Music Charity Launches New Website – And is Looking for New Members!

MUSIC:LINK, the music information service for Lincolnshire and the East Midlands, has this month launched a brand new website -www.music-link.org - as part of a range of enhancements made since soundLINCS saved the three decade old charity from closure a year ago. Started in Lincoln in 1986, MUSIC:LINK had faced the threat of winding up late last year as new volunteer committee posts could not be recruited. Community music charity soundLINCS stepped in as existing members had overwhelmingly said that they wanted the service to continue. MUSIC:LINK provides venues, promoters, schools, orchestras, bands, teachers, performers and individual music lovers with a range of services, including a monthly printed diary of live music events throughout the region. In the past year, a Facebook group has been launched to share information between members and the wider music community, and there has been a focus on increasing communications to help place members at the centre of the service and guarantee maximum promotion for events. MUSIC:LINK hopes that the new website will help to continue

to grow the membership and facilitate it reaching a wider audience going forwards. Nikki-Kate Heyes MBE, CEO of soundLINCS, said: “This is a very exciting time for MUSIC:LINK as we embark on our ambitious plans to grow and improve the service to help give Lincolnshire and the East Midlands an excellent music information service.” “We have listened to the service’s passionate and experienced membership and have strived to put their concerns and priorities at the heart of this new site. It is inspiring to see how much people value MUSIC:LINK and attracting new choirs, bands, teachers, venues, schools and performers will only make it more comprehensive in its promotion of live music opportunities in the region.” Membership signups for 2018 are open now for individuals and organisations, giving access to the directory and monthly diaries of events, opportunities to advertise services and events to a dedicated audience and the chance to connect with people passionate about live music across the region. For more information visit www.music-link.org or email music-link@soundlincs.org.

ou will have heard the clichéd phrase New Year, New You. It is usually applied to those who may have overindulged during the festive season and perhaps need to shed a few pounds. But I want to apply this well-worn phrase in a different and slightly extended way – New Year, New You, New Boston. It’s my New Year Resolution that in 2018 we look for the positives in and about Boston; let’s always

Each month a different member of Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet writes about the issues which they have responsibility for. This month the Mayor, Cllr Bernard Rush, gives us his New Year message.

borough who do their best. I have seen that there is much to celebrate in people who also love to live here and who go that extra mile to do their bit for the community. It has been a privilege to meet this silent “many” who beaver away at their good works quietly and unannounced, rarely, if ever, seeking praise for what they do for us all. Their actions speak volumes about their positive take on life. Not everyone can be a volunteer and work in some

“I am not afraid of the future for our town, nor our borough so let us all dare to dream of a new tomorrow.” try to celebrate the good news. When I was elected Boston’s 483rd Mayor in May I am sure I echoed the ideals of the previous 482 Mayors that we all do our best for Boston. I have said many times before that when I arrived here 46 years ago I simply fell in love with this town of Boston and its inhabitants and since May, with my wife at my side, Lady Mayoress Jayne, I have been meeting lots of good folk in this fine

capacity for the good of others, but we can all find ways to be positive and reject the negatives that some portray about our town. I am very aware, and do at times sympathise with some of the growing concerns expressed by true Bostonians; those local families who have lived and worked here all their lives. But nothing is ever achieved easily. So we must face our challenges together as a community.

Our futures may be about to flourish, and I am beginning to feel the same type of excitement I felt as a 17-year-old, when I set foot on the gangplank of the Duke of Abercorn passenger steamer, in Belfast Harbour, for my first solo foray to the wonderful country called England. Our Borough remains vitally important to the nation. Yes, because of the volume of food grown here – life’s staples such as wheat to make bread, sugar beet, potatoes and the best vegetables in the world; these are all treasures. But I want more. I want us to seek out new horizons for employment, and opportunities for our gifted youth. These are reasons to be proud. Let’s all work better to give Boston a reputation that we can all be proud of. I am not afraid of the future for our town, nor our borough so let us all dare to dream of a new tomorrow. Feel brave, demand from our politicians a brighter and better future for this great, historic borough... because Boston people are good people, and Boston people deserve no less than the very best. I hope you all had a very merry Christmas, and we can all look forward to a very happy and prosperous New Year.

Cllr Bernard Rush, Mayor.

Advice

Volunteering for Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire by Vicky Flood – Training and Recruitment Team Leader

Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire are indebted to over 90 highly trained volunteers who support the delivery of our work across North Kesteven and Boston. Our volunteers come from all sorts of backgrounds and help with everything we do: research and campaigning, administration, trusteeship, reception - and, of course, giving advice including as a telephone assessor. Volunteers who give advice to our clients are at the heart of our service and we could not manage without them. Volunteer assessors and advisers receive full training in the skills needed to help people deal with their problems and learn how to find the information the client needs from our extensive database. Volunteers are supported and supervised as they begin to assess clients and give advice. They will get feedback and development opportunities throughout their time with Citizens Advice. Will I have to complete an application form or have an interview? Yes, but remember the application form and interview is a two-way process. It enables us to find out more about you, to ensure that you are suitable for the role, but also enables you to ensure that the volunteering opportunity meets your needs and interests.

Do you provide training? All advisers receive comprehensive free training, which is recognised and respected throughout the country. The training programme consists of group training sessions, observation/shadowing, working through self-study packs, and courses run by Citizens Advice. You will be supported throughout your training. Most local Citizens Advice have several trainees at any one time, so you are likely to be training with other new volunteers. We find that most people complete the adviser training programme in 6-12 months, although this will, of course, depend on how much time you are able to commit to it. Do you always need volunteers? Yes, we constantly need volunteers.

I’ve got specific skills and experience, can you use them? One of the strengths of Citizens Advice is the diverse range of backgrounds, skills and experiences our volunteers bring to their roles. We will try to utilise volunteers skills and experience in the best role to suit these. Are there certain skills I need to be a Citizens Advice volunteer? It will depend on which role you are interested in. All advisers receive comprehensive free training so do not need any previous qualifications or experience. However, you will need to be open-minded, nonjudgemental, be able to listen, learn, and work in a team. In most other roles, volunteers will usually need some form of prior experience. However, we are a learning environment and volunteering in any role will give you the chance to develop your skills. What will I get out of volunteering for Citizens Advice? All our volunteers get something slightly different from the experience. Some of the most common benefits reported are: • making a difference to an individual’s life • changing the way things work for the better • receiving highly respected training • getting invaluable work experience • developing new skills • putting existing skills to good use • getting involved with the community • making new friends.

What support will I get as a volunteer? All volunteers are fully supported and supervised throughout their involvement with Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire. There will be a paid member of staff that you can turn to for extra support if you feel you need it. There is an Advice Session Team Leader on duty at each advice session to guide and assist volunteer advisers. We make sure that you are not put in situations that are beyond your abilities, and will work with you to help ensure that you find volunteering with us both challenging and rewarding. How much time do I need to give? There is no minimum time requirement to volunteer with Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire, you can discuss with us the time you have available, your interests, and skills, and how they fit with local needs. When / what times can I volunteer? We have offices in Sleaford, Boston, and North Hyekham. Will I get my expenses paid? We will reimburse travel and other out-of-pocket expenses. What are the chances of getting a job afterwards? Nearly one third of volunteers who leave us go on to paid employment. Local Citizens Advice volunteering provides skills and experience that is valued by many employers. A lot of paid local Citizens Advice staff, for example managers, case workers and

administrators, started out as volunteers. What age restrictions are there on volunteering? Citizens Advice volunteers need to be 16 or over. There is no upper age limit for volunteers. Will volunteering affect my jobseeker’s allowance? Citizens Advice volunteering will not affect jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) provided you: • remain available for and are actively seeking a full time paid job • take reasonable steps to find a job (e.g. answering adverts, signing up with an agency and taking other steps required by the Jobcentre Plus office) • inform the Job Centre/ Jobcentre Plus office that you are volunteering • can attend interview within 48 hours and take up work within one week. We can help you by providing a standard letter stating that the volunteer: • receives no remuneration, only reimbursement of actual out-of-pocket expenses, which does not count towards the JSA ‘earnings disregard’ • can be contacted whilst volunteering at Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire if a job opportunity becomes available • can be available at a week’s notice to start work or attend an interview with 48 hours’ notice. Volunteering should not affect income support as long as you are not receiving any money other than reimbursement of expenses. Will volunteering affect my other benefits? You should notify the relevant agency before starting if you receive incapacity benefit (IB), severe disablement allowance, employment and support allowance (ESA), carer’s allowance, industrial injuries disablement benefit, or invalid care allowance (ICA). We can help by providing a letter for you confirming the number of hours, that these hours are unpaid, and that volunteering is far more flexible and cannot be regarded as the same as paid work. If

Boston College O

n Saturday 11 November, Boston College opened the doors to its music and performing arts building, the Sam Newsom Centre, to host a day of workshops for the local community followed by an evening music gig by students and staff at the College with special guests, London African Drumming. A year in the making, the event was awarded £6,500 by Celebrate England, part of the National Lottery’s Big Lottery Fund which gives people the chance to come together to celebrate something important in their community, commemorate a local historic event or simply get to know their neighbours better. Local residents of all ages attended the daytime workshops, which included African Drumming and Dancing, Music Production and DJing. Led by industry experts, attendees could get up close and personal with their chosen area, having a go themselves, learning the tricks of the trade and being given the opportunity to ask questions and learn more. Christopher, who took part in the African Drumming workshop said “I’m so grateful to Boston College for this opportunity. I’ve always loved drumming and when I saw this free workshop advertised I jumped at the chance to take part! I’ve had a really fun day in this fantastic venue – the acoustics of the drums was amazing.” In the evening a packed auditorium was treated to a free three-and-a-half-hour

gig featuring Kings & Bears, The Rogues, Koyote, African Drumming and Performing Arts and Dance Medley. The auditorium, famed for its incredible acoustics, showed off the best the College has to offer, with original material and covers being played to this appreciative audience. Programme Area for Creative Arts, Neil Percy, said “This really was a fantastic celebration of this historic building and I was pleased to see so many people turn out to have a go at one of our workshops and in the evening to see our talented students and staff performing – there really was something for everyone. We are proud of the facilities at the Sam Newsom Centre and look forward to welcoming members of the public back soon at our regular events.”

Spalding couple who took their eight-year-old son on a round-the-world trip are now halfway through their adventure. Nigel, Louise And Kian Chapman have spent time on the west coast of America, in Japan and took six weeks touring the north and south islands of New Zealand. They’re now in Australia. Here’s Nigel’s latest update for Simply:

T

he first week of the Australian leg of our trip has presented the biggest challenges of our three months abroad so far - with two swift enforced changes of accommodation and an encounter with insects which wouldn’t be out of place on I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! The first hiccup came when we realised (whilst at Christchurch Airport in New Zealand ready to fly to Sydney) that the AirBnB accommodation we’d booked for our first five nights in Australia had been cancelled by the host. With little affordable alternatives to choose from at that late stage, we hastily booked a couple of nights in Sydney Central Backpackers. That

was swiftly reduced to one after our first night. We hadn’t booked beds with springs providing acupuncture and had not reckoned on “shared facilities” meaning with cockroaches the size of Tasmania. Fortunately, other wildlife we’ve encountered in the country has been much more welcome - a possum, kangaroos (on a golf course!), koala bears high up in the trees and Australian King parrots feeding out of our hands. Sydney is a wondrous joy and its appeal is clear to see. Yes, it’s best known for its opera house and harbour bridge and, no, they don’t disappoint from afar or at close quarters. But to fail to mention the city’s many other attractions would

be doing it a major disservice. Circular Quay and Darling Harbour are a pleasure to wander around, with seemingly as much going on, on the water as along the quaysides with ferries and water taxis jostling for position, and at Circular Quay the awesome sight of cruise ships harboured. All along the waterfronts are buzzing bars, cafés and restaurants, with buskers providing a backdrop of entertainment. We took a guided tour of The Rocks area, learning about the history of criminals being sent there from the other side of the world, the site of the city’s first hospital and witnessing the public housing flat a woman in her 80s is refusing

to leave despite the council wanting to demolish the block. No doubt the gaudy flashing sign she has in the window of the top floor flat overlooking Circular Quay is adding to the council’s frustration. The tour was a clever concept set up by the university graduate who led us around - they’re free (attracting lots of budget-conscious travellers) and are funded by tips (which are plentiful due to the quality and content). Elsewhere in the city, Darling Quarter was home to perhaps the best playground Kian has ever come across. Imagine every different manner of high quality play equipment coupled with a huge network of water play, all set

in an attractive tree-lined square (with a McDonald’s) and you’ll be somewhere near what this place offers. For me though, Australia will really have to go some to better New Zealand. In the last edition I told of the sights and attractions of the North Island. Well, the even more scenic South Island trumped it. We kayaked in Abel Tasman National Park, biked and luged in Queenstown, hiked to glacier viewing in Franz Josef, cruised in the mesmerising Milford Sound fjord and, in Christchurch, heard first-hand stories about the earthquakes which devastated the place in 2010 and 2011 and witnessed a city clearly still getting back on its feet.

It’s those sort of experiences which are enriching our trip further and reminding all three of us how lucky we are to be able to undertake it. Christmas is in Perth with a friend of ours who emigrated from England five years ago. The Christmas trees and festive decorations in the towns and shops all seem a bit, well, wrong alongside sunshine and temperatures in the high 80s. On the plus side, the preparations all start much later than in the UK and are much more mooted. Happy New Year! Well, wasn’t that over in the blink of an eye? All that planning, preparing, shopping and wrapping and here we are in January with not much to show for it other than clothes that are a bit too tight, a huge pile of black sacks for the bin men and a bank balance that could do with being a bit healthier! After such a highly anticipated event, The New Year and the return to normality can be a little depressing. Dark nights, long hours at work and the longing for some excitement and fun that invariably comes around with Spring & Summer. I am talking about Christmas, aren’t I? Maybe not… Pregnancy is a bit like the build up to Christmas…exciting, full of promise, family, love and new beginnings. Labour and birth can also be likened to the emotional meltdown we have the day before Christmas Eve when we’ve had enough, have run out of patience and don’t think we will ever actually get to the bit we have been waiting for. Your first few days as a new mum are like Christmas Day and Boxing Day all rolled into one. Lots of friends and family come to see you and you are still riding the hormonal high of the birth. But what happens when all that settles down? Your first few months as a new mum can be very much like the dark, drab, uninspiring days of January when we mostly feel fat, broken, unloved and exhausted. Falling in love with your baby at first sight is an amazing and magical time for women, but

not everyone feels like that. I’m going to let you in on a secret about not loving your baby straight away or even liking them. Or motherhood for that matter. It’s normal. Yes, that’s right. Normal. Perfectly acceptable. The anti-climax of birth is just like January blues apart from one really important detail: everybody understands about the January blues and accepts them for what they are. They know they will get over it and they know that just because you feel that way now, doesn’t mean the rest of your year is going to be a write off. Feeling sad, lonely or overwhelmed after what is perceived as the happiest event of your life is a really hard thing to deal with. So much pressure! Just what you need when you are sleep deprived and on the edge! If you are finding life physically or emotionally challenging after the birth of your baby, try to give yourself a break. I can guarantee you are your own worst critic. Eat and drink – your mental health and energy levels rely on it. Ask for help often and don’t feel guilty about doing it. Help comes in all sorts of forms…babysitting, having a chat and a cup of tea with a friend or someone to do your food shop. Remember that almost every other woman on the planet feels like you do right now and it’s OK. It is all going to be OK.

Wishing you all a healthy and balanced 2018 Annette Xx

Looking after your Dog this Winter

Exposure to winter’s dry, cold air and chilly rain, sleet and snow can cause chapped paws and itchy, flaking skin, but these aren’t the only discomforts pets can suffer. Winter walks can become downright dangerous if chemicals from de-icers are licked off of bare paws. To help prevent cold weather dangers from affecting your pet’s health, we have compiled a list of how you can help him this winter. • Repeatedly coming out of the cold into the dry heat of your home can cause itchy, flaking skin. Keep your home humidified and towel dry your pet as soon as he comes inside, paying special attention to his feet and inbetween the toes. Remove any snow balls from between his foot pads. • Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. If your dog is long-haired, simply trim him to minimize the clinging ice balls, salt crystals and de-icing chemicals that can dry his skin, and don’t neglect the hair between his toes. If your dog is short-haired, consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear. • Bathe your pets as little as possible during cold spells. Washing too often can remove essential oils and increase the chance of developing dry, flaky skin. If your pooch must be bathed, ask your vet or groomer to recommend a moisturizing shampoo and/or rinse. • Massaging petroleum jelly or other paw protectants into paw pads before going outside can help protect from salt and chemical agents. Booties provide even more coverage and can

also prevent sand and salt from getting lodged between bare toes and causing irritation. Use pet-friendly ice melts whenever possible. • Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. • Pets burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in winter. Feeding your pet a little bit more during the cold weather months can provide muchneeded calories, and making sure she has plenty of water to drink will help keep her well-hydrated and her skin less dry. • Make sure your animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect. • Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside. If left outdoors, pets can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen, injured or killed. In addition, don’t leave pets alone in a car during cold weather, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold and cause animals to freeze to death.

Helping Birds in Bad Weather Make sure seed is accessible and dry Hopper or tube feeders are good at protecting seed from wet weather, and they dole out food as it is eaten. Sweep snow off of platform feeders, or clear a place on the ground where you can scatter seed for groundfeeding species such as sparrows, towhees, juncos, and doves. If snow build-up is a problem… Keep extra feeders for use in bad weather Keep an extra-large-capacity tube feeder in the garage for use when nasty weather comes. It not only gives the birds another place to eat, which means more birds can eat at one time, but it also cuts down on our trips outside for refilling the feeders. Other extras to consider having: peanut feeder, suet feeder, satellite feeder (for the small birds to use), and a hopper feeder. Scatter seed in sheltered places Not all birds will venture to your feeder. Some species prefer to skulk in the thickets, brambles, and other secure places. For these species, consider scattering some seed (black-oil sunflower, sunflower bits, peanut bits, mixed seed) in your hedges and bushes, or even along the edge of a wooded area. Put out high-energy foods Food such as suet, meat scraps, and peanut butter are great. Fat gives the biggest energy boost to winter birds, and without enough energy to keep them going, many songbirds would not survive a cold winter night. Suet (the fat removed from processed beef), meat scraps, and peanut butter all provide fat to birds that eat them. If you don’t have a suet feeder, use a mesh onion bag. Suspend it from a tree branch or iron feeder hook. To feed peanut butter, drill oneinch holes in a foot-long section of a small log. Insert a screw eye into one end of the log. Smear peanut butter into the holes and suspend the feeder from the screw eye. Furnish your bird houses. Imagine you’re a bird roosting in a nest box on a cold winter’s night. Wouldn’t it be nice to snuggle down into some dried grass or dry wood shavings in the bottom of the house? Wood shavings work well, too. Don’t use sawdust, however; it can retain moisture once wet, which does not help the birds keep warm.

Health & Beauty

Keep on Smiling Oral health is something none of us should take for granted, so no matter what your age, or how many teeth you have, it’s important to look after them.

To keep your smile in tip top condition, or if you’re looking to start a new regime today, why not follow these tips from the British Dental Health Foundation. • When it comes to dental hygiene, prevention is better than cure. Always listen to your dentist’s advice when it comes to booking check-ups, as regular visits can help nip problems in the bud before they become more serious ones. • Look at your diet - a poor one can have adverse effects on your teeth. Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks, especially children, as the acid in them can lead to decay. Stick to foods and drinks which are kinder to teeth like cheese, crackers, breadsticks, raw vegetables, plain water and milk.

• Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. During the night the flow of saliva (the mouth’s cleaning system) slows down, leaving the mouth more at risk to decay. Brushing is a preventative measure, so it’s important to do this first thing in the morning and before you go to bed. • Floss or use interdental brushes, as these help clean away any food debris caught between your teeth, which in turn helps cut the risk of gum disease. • Invest in an electric toothbrush - tests have shown these are twice as effective as manual brushing. Plus many newer models also feature twominute timers, to help you make sure you brush for the recommended period of time.

Children and their Teeth

Establish good dental habits from an early age and your children will thank you for it in the long run. Start brushing your baby’s teeth with a fluoride toothpaste as soon as their first milk tooth breaks through.

Did you know NHS dental care for children is free? Take your children to the dentist whenever you attend for a check up, so they can see you being examined and get to know there’s nothing to be afraid of. And take them from as early as possible get used to the surgery and the dentist too. Be positive, and try and make it a fun trip - this will help them stop worrying about future visits. 18 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

• Look after your teeth - genuine accidents do happen, but be careful. Don’t bite things open like packets or use your teeth to open beer bottles as you’ll end up doing them more harm than good. • If you’re still unhappy with your smile, there are plenty of cosmetic treatments available to help alter the appearance of your teeth. People who smoke or drink red wine and coffee often find their teeth become stained - there are special toothpastes that can help reduce discolouration and whitening treatments to restore your natural colour. Or why not have a chat with your dentist about other options such as veneers and crowns?

New Year

New You

Once Christmas is over, it’s easy to feel a little lost. We’ve eaten to excess, we’ve got stressed with the shopping and we’ve obsessed over making sure that for one day of the year, everything is perfect. By the time January comes around, it can feel like we need a bit of a boost to get going again. So how can we meet the new year with a spring in our step?

Banish those blues

We all know that exercise helps us to lose those extra pounds (according to research, on average you consume 6,000 calories on Christmas day!), but it’s also good for the mind. Not only can exercise reduce the risk of health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, but it can make you feel better emotionally. When we’re feeling stressed or depressed, it’s easy to give in to comfort eating, which can develop into a vicious circle. However, exercise can help reduce stress levels and improve mood. Doing regular exercise is also a chance to escape from the pressures of everyday life and socialise. By using up energy, you’re also helping yourself to a good night’s sleep. According to the Royal College of Psychiatrists, there are a whole range of benefits to keeping active including being more likely to feel good about yourself and being less likely to have problems with concentration and memory.

But exercise is boring

We’ve all used this excuse before - but

exercise really doesn’t have to be a chore. If jogging round the park isn’t your thing, why not pick an activity that you enjoy or that you’ve always wanted to try? Dance classes, yoga, swimming, weight training, kick boxing, martial arts – the choice is yours. Why not check out the opening times of your local gym? You might find you can fit in a session before work. Or maybe you could go in your lunch hour? Pilates and yoga are recommended for helping combat stress. The Department of Health recommends that adults should do at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times week, so the trick is to do something you enjoy.

Your health and well being

Depending on your individual requirements, there are also many complementary therapies that can help improve your wellbeing in general. Here are some of our favourites: Indian Head Massage This has relaxing massage has been practiced for over a thousand years and

includes the treatment of the shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face. It is said to relieve tension, fatigue, headaches and eyestrain by manipulating energy channels. Aromatherapy This alternative therapy combines the use of essential oils, naturally produced by plans and trees. Sometimes it’s combined with massage. Aromatherapy is believed to help improve physical and emotional wellbeing. Reflexology This intensive massage works on the idea that different points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body. It has been practiced for some 5000 years by the Egyptians and Chinese and is said to be a means of unblocking energy and promoting healing. Great for some serious relaxation if you’ve been on your feet all over Christmas! Always check with a healthcare professional before changing your diet or embarking on new exercise regimes or alternative therapies. Always seek professional advice!

New Year, New Career? Boston College is offering a range of part time adult courses starting in January 2018. December is traditionally the time to begin making plans for the new year, including New Year’s resolutions. While losing weight and eating more healthily might be at the top of most lists, you might also include items such as “learn new skills” or “start a new career”. Boston College’s

part time adult courses can be the first step towards that goal. Study time is just one day a week (some as little as 3 hours) for between 19 and 40 weeks so the courses can fit in around your current commitments. Courses are being offered in the following areas: Health and Social Care, IT, Sport, Catering, Beauty Therapy and Accounting, covering topics such

as Dementia Care, Personal Training and Indian Head Massage. Full details of all the courses can be found on the College’s website, www.boston. ac.uk. To help with the cost, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. Your household income isn’t taken into account and there is no credit check. You won’t pay anything back until

you are earning £21,000 a year. The Learner Services team at the College will be able to help you with all aspects of the Advanced Learner Loan and answer any questions you might have. So why wait until September to start a course when you can begin training towards a new career as early as January 4th? Writing a Eulogy Funerals are often remembered on account of the words that are spoken within the frame of a personal recollection. A Eulogy is a recount of someone’s life, as told by friends and family. It need not be long but contain enough references to be substantive to the listener. More than one person can stand in front of a congregation to read it out.

R

eading out a Eulogy is probably the best way of saying Goodbye, by heralding achievements and moments in a person’s life that should be celebrated for all time. How do you choose a person to read the Eulogy? It could be a friend or a family member, that is confident enough to read it out aloud. It is an honour to be chosen. You cannot truly assemble a Eulogy without having a little detail about that person’s life. The reason for this prose is to get across factual accounts about their personality, character and the qualities that made them who they were. This is recounted by way of tales and stories that either people can imagine or recall or compare to the situation they know all too well. This should be a light hearted focus on happier moments that a congregation of family and friends can leave with, feeling good about the person and themselves. It’s not good to be repetitive when you

22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

have so little time to recount the best of all of someone’s character traits. As you talk to friends and family and the info starts to build up and stories, anecdotes and pictures are added you will start to see the basis of the Eulogy forming in your mind. Parts that will create a laugh, another aspect a tear and jog people’s memories into remembering the person they knew best. People will hear the same words but they will each take something different from hearing it. The topics of each content can be assembled from birth to their youth, to marriage and family. Starting with their place of birth, the family itself, then through to childhood, nicknames, their personality beginning to form. To becoming an adult, work life, relationships that matter, military service and how they benefited from a good education or beat the system and went on to achieve more. A person often dedicates their life to a cause or passion so brining that

into play will be a good idea, as well as acknowledging certain family and friends in the congregation who provided you with the anecdote or tail. Awards, rewards, public service, commendations and heroics, sporting achievements, these can all add colour to describe someone’s life. This is not a Best Man’s Speech for a Wedding, obviously. That doesn’t mean you can’t make people laugh however. It is up to you to judge how receptive those at the funeral service will be to your sense of humour. You can set the tone and be serious throughout or split half way through and offer a smile. Happy anecdotes, poignant memories of struggles with a happy endings, even jokes can be welcomed. Simply ensure you rehearse the reading of a Eulogy, perhaps ask a friend to listen so it can be adapted and pass to a family friend to ensure corrections are made if necessary. When up at the podium, clear your throat, speak up, be clear and concise, look up and speak to those in front of you.

Is it Better to

Home & Property

Move or Improve?

The age old question of should you stay or should you go? As families grow we all think of moving to a new home but is it really necessary? Before you pack up boxes and moving it’s worth considering making improvements to your home rather than moving.

M

oving home when you have a growing family to feed, clothe and support can be an expensive task buying a property for £275,000 will cost you £3,750 in Stamp Duty alone, that’s without solicitor fees, removal costs and any other things that crop up along the way. The area you wish to live in is often one of the most important factors when moving, so if you like where you live it is definitely worth seeing if you can work with your existing property to meet your needs. If it’s an extra bathroom you are after, may be you can take some room from a larger bedroom or put a sink in the current bedrooms? Have you thought about having a separate the bath from the shower so several people can use it at the same time (if that works for you and your family!). For several thousand pounds you could easily fund an extra shower and loo and it will probably add value to your home too, improving the equity levels and in some cases this may even mean getting a better mortgage deal in the future! Extra rooms can be added and put in the garden, over a garage, or at the back of your home if you have the space for less than £10,000 so it’s worth considering and chatting through these options with a builder before taking the plunge into marketing your home.  When thinking about having any home improvements carried out, arrange for a free no obligation meeting to discuss your project and what you wish to achieve from the alterations. It’s always a good idea to obtain details of all alterations in writing in the form of a contract so there can be no misunderstandings. In particular, I’d advise that you discuss the timescales that each alteration requires as these could affect your daily routines - e.g. electricity and water disconnections, or having to book time off work. Finally, ensure you allow plenty of time to think carefully about what changes you want to make - your new design needs to meet your exact requirements to fit in with your life. If you do decide to move, you need to try and make the home as easy to clear up and clean as possible. You may only get 30 minutes notice for a viewing, or if you are out during the day and the agent wants to show someone round, the place needs to be really tidy every time you step out the door. It can

be tough with busy lives but it’s worth the effort if it means you can sell your home as quickly as possible and for the best price. If you are anything like me, I watch lots of house programmes and the one piece of advice they all give when selling a property is to: Declutter! We all accumulate lots of stuff - toys to games, DVDs and CDs. It’s now time to box up what’s not required to show off the real space available in your home. Remember, most people can’t see past your furnishings and decor, so you have to make the effort to do it for them. Have your rooms lost their purpose? One thing which happens when you have a busy lifestyle is rooms tend to become multi-functional. Dining rooms double up as offices, hallways a space for the bike, the spare room becomes a ‘dumping ground’. That’s fair enough when you are living there, but if you are selling, every room must have a clear purpose. Box rooms need to be offices that can ideally be turned into a bedroom in an instant if required. If rooms are big enough to have a double bed, make sure they do, or prospective home hunters will just believe that the room can only fit a single bed. The last thing any child or teenager wants to do is tidy up regularly - unless you are very lucky! So make this as easy as possible. Easy and temporary storage is helpful so things

can literally be ‘chucked in’ and put under beds, in cupboards, run up to the loft if you have easy access. Moving the family is tough. So try to make the process as straightforward as possible – from experience it can be worth investing in removal company’s packing service, your home remains as is right up until the day before moving and as they do all the lifting. You are not shattered when you arrive at your new home so you tend to unpack more quickly and get back to normal life. Many even offer an unpacking service too but for me, I like to put things where I want them to go from the start. Have you thought about part exchange if you are trading up? And especially if you are buying a brand new home as you may get a good deal. Alternatively, if you have found ‘the house of your dreams’ and you can afford to do so, think about renting the one you currently own to buy a new one and then you can sell when you are ready as holding chains together can be a deal breaker – however be aware second home ownership will increase the stamp duty rate you pay. Before you make a decision either way, look at all your options, speak to builders for quotes and estate agents to see what property is available in your budget as well as how quickly they would expect your property to sell.

New McLaren 570GT PROS ‘N’ CONS à Stunning Looks 4 à Unforgettable Drive 4 à Lightening Quick 4 à British Built 4 à Cost 8

T

he letters ‘G’ and ‘T’ are used far too often on cars. And, yes, I’m referring to a grand tourer rather than a gin and tonic. Some automakers think that by sticking a ‘GT’ badge on the boot lid it makes their product instantly irresistible. Many are wrong about that. But McLaren isn’t. Indeed, the 570GT is so far from wrong, it’s untrue. McLaren’s 570GT is one of the best cars the British firm makes and it’s undeniably the most multitalented sports car, too. You can probably tell I was utterly blown away with the 570GT when I tested it on British bitumen recently. Fundamentally, McLaren has taken the awesome 570S and has injected it with an extra dose of civility. The result is the 570GT – a machine that’s as refined as possible without swapping for a smaller power unit and additional seats. The 570GT even looks like the 570S, but there are some major differences between the models. The latter’s flying buttresses have been replaced by curved bodywork that comprises a glass hatch. There’s a respectable 220-litres of load space under there, meaning the 570GT has a genuine practical edge to it. The car also has a glass roof that makes the cabin airy and full of mood-enhancing light. The engine, normally on display in the McLaren 570S, is tastefully concealed under a leather floor in the 570GT. While, inside, the car gets extra soundproofing, soft-close doors and electric heated seats. If that’s not enough to start justifying those letters ‘G’ and ‘T’, the 570GT is equipped with a more hushed exhaust system and softer suspension. The steering is also milder than the 570S’. These changes make the McLaren 570GT a car you could use every day. The ride is pliable enough to make our pothole-ridden roads bearable, and

26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

FAST FACTS (McLaren 570GT as tested ) motorway cruising din is subdued enough so that your ears don’t bleed. But, just because you could use the GT on a daily basis doesn’t mean this is a lacklustre McLaren. Oh no. In every other way, the 570GT does everything else a full-fat McLaren does. And, most importantly, it looks one of the meanest, sexiest cars out there. It’s a major head-turner, that’s for sure. With just a quick stab of the 570GT’s starter button, the twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 lump barks into life. Depress the gas pedal and the increase of velocity is hard-hitting, due to the 570 horses under the lid. And snapping up and down the cogs via the paddlemounted gears-shifters is a real smile-inducer. Zero to 62mph is done in an insanely rapid 3.4 seconds, while the top speed is a licence-losing 204mph. Regardless of the additional luxuries added to the GT, this McLaren’s cabin stays broadly the same as in the 570S’. It’s a work of genius in contemporary sports car interior design and a long way from the chaotic buttonfest of the Ferrari 488 or the unemotional ambience in Porsche’s 911 Turbo. You sit near to the ground but erect in the 570GT, so visibility is very good. And, as mentioned earlier, it’s comfortable enough to be used as a real-world form of transport.

à Max speed: 204 mph à 0-62 mph: 3.4 secs à Combined mpg: 26.4 à Engine layout: 3799cc twin-turbocharged V8 à Max. power (PS): 570 à CO2: 249 g/km

Price: £154,000

While the alterations from the 570S to GT could be seen as fairly minor, they make a substantial difference to the McLaren driving experience. The British sports car maker has constructed a machine that is as calm as possible, without kicking any of the theatre to the kerb.
