Welcome to the December issue Merry Christmas!

It is true what they say the older you get the faster time passes, I cannot believe we are fast approaching December and Christmas is upon us. This year is our first as a family of four and I have really struggled with gift ideas for our baby as she (or we are) certainly making the most of the ‘handme’downs’ from her big brother! As a family we are very traditional – a turkey and all the trimmings for lunch, a lazy afternoon with maybe a little walk, followed by a buffet dinner. There will be four generations in the house this year with my grandmother and then my children, I feel very fortunate to have this. This issue is full of festivities with our Christmas Themed food and drink section, as the weather turns colder we also look at elderly care and how to keep children active through the winter months. Tim is test driving the Renault Koleos. As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is to have a great month and a very MERRY CHRISTMAS

Have your say on GP appointments in Lincolnshire Healthwatch Lincolnshire is one of 152 local Healthwatch groups set up by the Government as part of health reforms set out in the Health and Social Care Act in 2012. Its job is to ensure that the voice of patients, users and the public is at the heart of NHS and care services. Healthwatch Lincolnshire gathers patient views, represents those views to local NHS organisations and makes sure they are taken account of. Healthwatch Lincolnshire have been hearing for some time about the delays in people getting appointments at GP surgeries. To help us better understand what impact this may be having on patients health we are carrying out a survey to find out what people’s experiences are. We want to hear your experiences, to share those with us follow the link: https://www.surveymonkey. co.uk/r/hwlgp17 Alternatively you can share your experiences by contacting Healthwatch Lincolnshire on 01205 820892 or email info@healthwatchlincolnshire. co.uk

Funds available for community events in Boston Groups with an idea for a community event in central Boston or those who already run one are being urged to get applications in for funding totalling £18,000. Boston Big Local has made the funds available again this year, having previously supported events including Boston Bike Night and Butterfly Hospice Trust’s Ugly Bug Marathon. The next deadline for applications is January 19 but groups who require a decision before then are invited to get in touch. The Local Event Grants Scheme is designed to support six small events up to a maximum of £1,500 and two larger scale events of up to £4,500 between now and end of March 2019. It is again being administered by Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) on behalf of Boston Big Local. Richard Tory, Boston Big Local chairman, said: “One of Boston Big Local’s main priorities is building community spirit and we feel supporting these events can help with bringing people together and instilling pride in the town as well as attracting tourists and promoting all that Boston has to offer.”

4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk 4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Final decisions on all applications for funding will rest with an independent panel made up of people living, working or volunteering within the Boston Big Local area. LCVS will also work with groups to support them to ensure they have the right infrastructure in place to successfully deliver an event. LCVS can provide advice and information on governance, volunteering support, support with policies and procedures, identifying and meeting training needs and becoming fit to fundraise and run events. Boston Big Local is a resident led 10-year programme to help make the town centre area an even better place to live. Projects must benefit the central town centre area of Boston the funding is designed to support. If you have an event you think could benefit from this funding and would like to find out more, contact Mr Jody Raggo, LCVS Area Officer for Boston, on 01205 510888 and chose option 1 or email jody.r@ lincolnshirecvs.org.uk. Application forms and further guidance are available via www. lincolnshirecvs.org.uk

Lincolnshire celebrated in charity calendar

Ringrose Law and DPS have produced a charity calendar which is for sale in aid of LIVES. Calendars will be sold to the general public and all proceeds will be going towards training and equipping lifesaving volunteer responders throughout Lincolnshire. Ringrose Law invited members of the public to take their camera and explore Lincolnshire, from the Wolds to the coast, the Humber to the Wash. This vast county provides us with a diverse mix of scenery, wildlife and architecture, and the calendar showcases the best images from the Love Your Lincolnshire Photo Competition in the 2018 Calendar. Alex Bennett, Marketing Manager at Ringrose Law; “This is the fourth year we have run the competition and every year the quality of the photographs just get better and better. Thanks you to everyone who entered and a big congratulations to all of the winners. This year we are delighted to be teaming up with LIVES and selling the calendar for the charity. We have supported LIVES for many years now and to work so closely with them on this project has been great. We hope to sell as many calendars as we can and raise lots of

vital funds for this fantastic local charity.” Chris Strawson at DPS said: “ It been a pleasure putting together this calendar for our client Ringrose Law and helping to support LIVES. This isn’t the first project that we’ve work on that has involved LIVES, so we are well aware of what a great job they do, let’s hope that lots of calendars are sold are we can raise more vital funds for this fantastic local charity.” Nikki Silver said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Ringrose Law and DPS for producing a charity calendar for LIVES that celebrates what is great about Lincolnshire. LIVES is on track to help more than 21,000 people across the county this year, and therefore by buying the calendar the public are helping us to keep our responders on the road so that they can continue to be there for the people of Lincolnshire in their time of greatest time of need” The calendars can be purchased in any Ringrose Law Offices in Boston, Lincoln, Grantham, Sleaford, Spalding and Newark; DPS Office in Boston and LIVES office’s in Horncastle or online at lives.org.uk . t is always surprising, when you look back over 12 months, to see how much has happened. We quickly move on to deal with the next important matter and past victories can quickly fade from the memory. I want to start at the end of 2017 and not the beginning. Because the big news just in is that we have been successful in a bid to the Government’s Migration Impact Fund. Thanks to the hard work put in by volunteers and partners, elected members and officers Boston borough is to receive £1,387,503. This will be used for a programme of projects aimed at bringing people together through sport, events and community assets, extending the availability of advice services, tackling rogue landlords and anti-social behaviour, strengthening community leadership and whole community volunteering opportunity and supporting the development of English language skills. These are all reflective of the main concerns people have been expressing about the impact on Boston of rapid population change. It has been pleasing to witness business growth in the past 12 months. Our success at growing our own and encouraging new businesses to start up here and existing businesses to relocate here will be essential as we move towards the end of Government financial support and into a new era of dependence on revenue to pay for essential services raised through business rates. A revised management structure has taken into account the requirement to focus on economic development and regeneration and there have already been some early successes, brining in extra business rates revenue for the borough, including: • Duckworths Landrover and Jaguar car showroom at Kirton

Each month a different member of Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet writes about the issues which they have responsibility for. This month Leader of Boston Borough Council Cllr Michael Cooper, looks back over the last 12 months

Michael’s Notes Distribution Park; • Howard Tenens warehousing and distribution extension; • Pilgrim Foods extension; • County Hall Apartment Hotel; • Boston Bowls Battle Centre; • Lidl, Westbridge Centre; • Co-operative Group Wyberton; • Sportsbikeshop extension, Kirton Distribution Park; • Trade Windows manufacturing warehouse, Kirton Distribution Park; • Lincolnshire Co-op Swineshead; • UK Capacity Reserve electricity storage infrastructure; We have had the culmination of a council task group’s work to help maximise Boston’s prosperity and new initiatives to ensure markets and events are well run and are developed to maximise income opportunities. And a new bid to welcome more through the www. visitbostonuk.com website After rounds of public consultation and a public inquiry, the Boston Barrier flood protection project has been officially approved. It can now move ahead unhindered, and on the original timeframe - a £100 million tidal barrier will be delivered, which will provide improved flood protection to more than 20,000 homes and businesses. It was another good year of the community coming together for all the right reasons. Once again the Big Boston Clean-up was held, marking its tenth anniversary and this year supporting the Great British Spring Clean campaign. Councils continue to be pressed for cash, with austerity measures still bearing down on us all. The council continues to balance its budget and is actively pursuing its transformation programme to find new ways of saving money and working more efficiently. So it is timely that I congratulate all those willing volunteers who turn out for Boston’s Big Clean-up – now

a local institution – to do their bit. The schools clean-up also goes from strength to strength. I want to also praise all the volunteers who turn out all the year round to do their bit to keep the borough clean and tidy. Once again in 2017 we claimed a gold in-bloom medal – Boston’s third. I hope you agree that the efforts of all those involved in this year-round campaign really show. In my eyes the town is cleaner, tidier and generally a nicer place to be thanks to the efforts of all those involved in Boston In Bloom. Please don’t be persuaded from what you may, from time to time, see on social media. A photograph of a lone drinks can or crisp packet abandoned in a gutter does not indicate streets knee deep in litter. There is an ongoing battle with litter of all descriptions which may never be truly won while some in society continue to refuse to use the many litter bins we have provided. But Boston is no worse, and better than some. In fact, we have been leaders in the field – first to introduce street drinking controls, first to use anti-social behaviour legislation to deal with persistent offenders, first to use new laws to deal with those who won’t clean up after their dogs. We have also formed a partnership with a third party environmental enforcement agency to deal with littering at no additional cost to council tax payers. They have been particularly successful this year in helping reduce incidents of deliberately dropped litter, discarded cigarette ends and spitting in the street. With all that in mind can I wish all reader a merry Christmas and a happy and PROSPEROUS new year.

Advice

‘Tis the Season to Shop Online by Sally Pygott – Project Development Team Leader

We all know Christmas is a huge time for shopping, UK spending reached a record £77.56bn during the festive period in 2016 and online sales contributed 27% of all Christmas retail sales. The vast majority of these were completed successfully for all concerned but…

If you experience problems with something you ordered and it hasn’t arrived: You should contact the seller to find out where it is. It’s the seller’s legal responsibility to make sure the item is delivered to you. They should chase the delivery company and let you know what’s happened to your item. If your item wasn’t delivered to the location you agreed (e.g. it was left with your neighbour without your consent), it’s the seller’s legal responsibility to sort out the issue. If the item doesn’t turn up, you’re legally entitled to a replacement or refund.

Get the item delivered again You can write to the seller and ask them to deliver the item again. You should do this if the item wasn’t delivered within a reasonable time or the item wasn’t delivered by an agreed date.

Get your money back You can ask for your money back if you don’t receive the item either: • within 30 days of buying it • on the date you agreed with the seller - if it was essential to receive it by then (e.g. for an event then or

shortly after) If the seller refuses to give you your money back, you should put your complaint in writing - follow their complaints procedure if they have one. If that doesn’t work you could: • contact their trade association - look on their website for this information, or contact them to ask • use an alternative dispute resolution scheme - it’s a way of solving disagreements without going to court, where a third party will mediate to try and reach a solution You might also be able to get your money back through your bank or payment provider - this depends on how you paid.

If you paid by debit card

If the item cost more than £100 but less than £30,000, contact your credit card company and say that you want to make a ‘section 75’ claim to get your money back.

If you paid using PayPal Use PayPal’s online resolution centre to report your dispute. You must do so within 180 days of paying.

Report to Trading Standards If you think the seller’s broken the law, for example, by taking your money and refusing to deliver your item, you should report them to Trading Standards . They may be able to investigate and even prosecute the seller, but won’t usually be able to get you your money back.

Contact your bank and say you want to use the ‘chargeback scheme’. If the bank agrees, they can ask the seller’s bank to reverse the transaction and refund the money back into your account. Many bank staff don’t know about the scheme, so you might need to speak to a supervisor or manager. They might ask you to put your request in writing. You should do this within 120 days of when you paid.

You have the legal right to a refund if you’ve bought something that’s fake or counterfeit. You can also report the seller to Trading Standards or report the seller for fraud. Trading Standards might take legal action against the seller, but they can’t help you to get your money back.

If you paid by credit card

Getting a refund from the seller

If the item cost less than £100, you should contact your credit card company and say you want to use the ‘chargeback scheme’. They could also ask you to put your request in writing. There’s no time limit for when you need to do this.

You’re legally entitled to a full refund on fake goods within 30 days of paying for them. If it’s been over 30 days but less than 6 months since you paid, the seller is legally able to give you a real version of the item to replace the fake

If you think you have bought fake or counterfeit goods

one. However, if they can’t provide a replacement, they’re legally required to give you a refund (up until 6 months after you paid for it). If you paid for the item more than 6 months ago, you’re entitled to a partrefund depending on how much you’ve used the item and how long you’ve had it. It’s harder to do this after 6 months as you could be asked to prove that the item is a fake - try talking to the real brand and asking them to inspect it.

If the seller refuses a refund Sometimes sellers argue that items were obviously fake because they were very cheap. They can say you must have known it wasn’t the real

thing and use that as a reason not to give your money back. However, they’re breaking the law by selling fake items and your legal rights still apply. If you need more help finding out how to get your money back, you can contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline .

Report the seller for fraud As well as reporting them to Trading Standards, you can also report the trader to ActionFraud. You’re under no obligation to do this, but they will register the trader on the national fraud database, which helps them understand the scale of fraud across the UK. You can report online at www. actionfraud.police.uk or call them on 0300 123 2040.

Boston College Students at Boston College have been busy preparing for a Christmas campaign to highlight the dangers of drinking and driving. The Motor Vehicle department will host a series of events in December looking at the consequences of drink driving, culminating in a re-enactment of a major car accident with the help of the emergency services. Retained firefighter Lee Crisp, who is a lecturer in the Motor Vehicle department at the College, has organised this event in previous years and is keen to once again lend his expertise to raise awareness at this key time of year. As well as a day of workshops, there will be a simulator and the re-enactment which will be taking place on the 15th December. Students will get the opportunity to see first-hand the

devastating effects that drinking and driving can have when the scene of a head-on collision is recreated, complete with volunteers who have agreed to act as the drivers of the cars. The police, ambulance service and fire service will all attend so spectators can see how the emergency services work together as one big team. The fire service will also be displaying their skills when they cut one of the victims out of their car and free them so they can be seen by paramedics. The latest statistics show that in 2015 over 70,000 people were caught drink driving with 220 people killed and more than 8000 injured. With many students at the College starting to take their first driving lessons, these events will serve to remind them of their responsibilities as careful drivers.

12 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

It’s also the season for thankfulness and reflection, and with the New Year around the corner, you might want to consider your own affairs. Thinking ahead to your funeral is another way of looking after your nearest and dearest. With a funeral plan, they’ll have peace of mind. That’s because when your funeral arrangements are entrusted to us, we make sure relatives have no more to worry about than necessary. We offer a personal and professional service from modern facilities in your area, and you’re welcome to pop in for a cup of tea and a chat. Our caring funeral colleagues can take you through all your requirements and a variety of personal touches. We can provide unique transport, from our own traditional vehicles to horsedrawn carriages and even a motorcycle-hearse. Music, readings and flowers or even the release of doves are some of the many other personal options available, and we employ memorial masons who can produce unique tributes. You’re guaranteed excellent value with us as there’s no middleman. Our colleagues organise and carry out funerals

themselves so you’ll have complete peace of mind. We’re also clear about the price we set. There are two different types of cost - the funeral director’s charges and the disbursements paid to third parties. The disbursements you include in a plan with us are fully covered, so once they’re paid, your loved ones won’t need to pay more at the time of the funeral as may be the case with most other plan providers. We’ve signed the Fair Funerals pledge to prove we’re committed to transparent pricing and helping people find a funeral that’s affordable. Our current funeral plan cost will change on 1st January 2018, but you can still visit your local Lincolnshire Co-op funeral branch now to secure this year’s price. And whatever is included in a funeral plan, we want to look after the person who needs it. That’s why we’re offering 10 per cent dividend to members on plans arranged between 18th November and 15th December. Visit your local Boston Funeral Home in South Square for a friendly chat or call on 01205 362512 to find out more.

Tastes so good... Reindeer Marshmallows Ingredients

Method:

Large Marshmallows Pretzels (for Antlers)

1. Line a large board with greaseproof paper. 2. Melt the chocolate – ask an adult to help - and leave to cool slightly 3. Dip each marshmallow into the melted chocolate covering the base and edges. Place on greaseproof paper and leave in fridge to set. 4. Take out the fridge and turn upside down, add a drop of melted chocolate to base of every marshmallow and add two pretzels to either side to make antlers. 5. Flip them back over and return to fridge to set, meanwhile make small icing eyes. 6. Add the eyes and a sweetie red nose using a drop of melted chocolate and return to fridge to set. Thread string around antlers and hang from the tree – irresistible!

Small Red candy sweets Ready to roll white and black icing 100g milk chocolate (Need to add string to hook to Christmas Tree)

Peppermint Cream Sweets Delicious, minty sweets that are perfect served after dinner or as an indulgent treat. Can be kept in the fridge if there are any left after serving!

Ingredients

Method:

1.5 cups of coconut oil

1. Whip the solid coconut oil, honey and peppermint essential oil together with a hand mixer. The whipped filling will be white and fluffy when it’s ready. 2. Put the whole bowl into the fridge for about 10 minutes. Use a small teaspoon to take a portion of the mixture and pop them into a silicon mould. Alternatively, just shape them with your hand as best as you can! If you’re not using a mould then place the creams onto parchment paper and put them into the freezer. 3. In a small saucepan gently melt the chocolate over a low heat. Take the sweets out of the freezer. 4. Use a wooden skewer to dip each piece into the melted chocolate. Place onto the parchment paper again and put them back into the freezer until hardened. Best served at room temperature.

0.25 cups of honey 3 drops peppermint oil 1 cup dark or semisweet chocolate (melted)

Family life

Caring for the Elderly As close family or friends get older it can be very distressing for them and you to see them deteriorate and cope less and less with day to day activities and chores. Making the decision as a family to ask for help is an extremely difficult one, not only for the person needing help but for those around them too. So what are the options? Personal Alarms Having a personal alarm gives you independence and your family peace of mind. It offers help on hand 24 hours a day. Usually the alarm pendant can be worn around the neck or as a wrist band. When you press the red button, it connects 24 hours a day to our dedicated call centre. So if there is an emergency or you have a fall, you can get help quickly. The alarm works in the home or in the garden, leaving you free to get on with your life! Meals on wheels This service is for people aged 18 and over, normally older people, who are unable to prepare and cook one hot meal a day. This may be a permanent situation due to sight loss, a physical or learning disability, illness or a temporary situation such as recovering after a stay in hospital, to help you maintain your independence and quality of life. A Country Kitchen is a meals on wheels service that provides hot, healthy and nutritious food to your door every day. They already provide meals for Age UK and can provide them for people who need them in the Spalding and South Holland area. Their meals are cooked fresh on a daily basis using good local suppliers, please note the cost of preparing the food and delivering it to your home has to be covered. To contact them please call 01406 425242 6.30am - 11am or mobile: 07979 500162 anytime. Homecare If someone requires ongoing care but also

18 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

desires to remain in the comfort of their own home, home care is a viable and acceptable solution. Home care solutions come in a variety of packages, using an assortment of tools. Identifying the exact homecare services you or your loved one need is the first step to finding the home care solutions that will work for your family. When it comes to at home care there are a variety of solutions available to meet the needs of patients with a variety of needs. Personal care might include helping the person bathe, wash them, or get dressed in the mornings. It might also include providing domestic services such as cleaning the house, washing the dishes, doing the laundry or lawn care. Cooking meals or even delivering meals are part of some home care solutions. Of course basic home health care may also be included as a part of the homecare services being provided. Homecare solutions are various because individual needs are various. Not everyone is suffering in the same way so not every home care solution fits every person. Home care nursing is also available should the patient need services beyond the basic necessities. This might include helping them manage their medications, and stay on a daily meal schedule. If there is a problem there is a likely a home care solution that will work. The best part is that with all homecare services come the added benefit of a patient who is happier and family members have peace of mind. Daycare Day care is a popular service offered to people who need some help with personal or practical care and are unable to get out and about by themselves. There are various day care options from a social ‘getting out’ meeting point to having somewhere that helps care for you. Day care is usually available in a resource centre, community

building or a residential home and offers more support than an ordinary day centre can provide. Professional caring staff can support you with personal care, such as going to the toilet, reminding you to take medication or help with washing or bathing. You may also be able to have a hot meal and drinks during the day and a chance to socialise and to take part in a number of leisure and craft activities. Care Home Often a move into a care home is suggested because of a crisis – maybe an illness or a fall – but it’s not always the only solution. Think about why you are considering a move to a care home. Is it mainly because other people advise it? Or do you really want to make the move? Your family and friends, or people such as your doctor or social worker, can help you work out what you want to do. But it is up to you to make the final decision about what is best. There are two main types of care home. Some offer accommodation and help with personal care – activities such as washing, dressing and going to the toilet. Others provide those services and also offer nursing care. There are also care homes for those who require extra care and support, often due to dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society can give advice to people with dementia and their carers and families about suitable homes. It also gives information on what to look for in a care home. Care homes are owned and run by local authorities, private companies or voluntary organisations. If you can’t find a care home that provides the sort of care you need, ask your local council to help. It has a responsibility to find a suitable home for anyone it has assessed as needing a care home place. Care homes have to make it very clear what level of care they provide and how they will meet each resident’s needs. They must not accept residents if they don’t have the staff and facilities to meet their needs. All care homes should be able to give you help with personal care if you need it – this could include washing, dressing and going to the toilet. If you are unable to leave your bed, or have any sort of medical condition or illness that requires frequent medical attention, you will probably need to look for a care home that provides nursing care. This type of home should have a qualified nurse on duty 24 hours a day and appropriate facilities such as hoists and specialist beds.

Working closely with local schools and preschools, Annica is spreading the word about the importance of children’s eye health and visual requirements. Tradition meets technology Over the years, Cheryl and Annica have invested in new technology to provide even more in-depth analysis of your eye health. Included in their 45-minute eye health and vision examinations are 3D ocular health scans which are used to monitor the underlying layers at the very back of the eye, something that traditional methods would not be able to achieve. “By investing in such machinery, our optometrist can look at your eyes in greater depth, these methods are used to detect and monitor.” Fabulous eyewear as well as great eyecare As well as the professional eyecare service you will receive at Clark Family Eyecare, there are some great spectacles to choose from also. Follow Your Dreams

Nigel and Louise Chapman and their son, Kian (8) put their lives in Spalding on hold to travel the world during a family gap period. After volunteering at family activity centres in the UK over the summer, the trio spent three weeks on the west coast of America and ten days in Japan. Here, Nigel updates Simply on the trip...

e’re in New Zealand now and I suppose the best compliment I can pay it is that we’ve postponed our onward flight to Australia in order to give us more time here. It’s such a beautiful country, dotted with mountains and green landscape, that we can forgive the roads for not being too cracky (or should that read being cracky?) Either way, we soon decided that four weeks wouldn’t be enough. That’s despite the three of us being cooped up in a small campervan! So we’ve ‘bought’ ourselves an extra fortnight here; we could regret losing those two weeks in Oz but as I write this overlooking a marina

in Wellington on a bright spring morning it’s a risk worth taking. We’ve enjoyed taking full advantage of the country’s terrain by bathing at every opportunity in hot pools and streams supplied with geothermally heated water. At Rotorua - a town with bubbling waters at every turn - you can even take a spade to the lakeside and dig your own personal hot pool! We began our stay on the North Island. After flying into Auckland, we immediately headed north to the Bay of Islands - an area comprising 150 undeveloped islands. We stopped for a couple of nights in Russell - a one-time capital in the mid-19th century, albeit for less than

a year. It initially prospered from an influx of traders and settlers but with that came drunken bawdiness and the tag of ‘hellhole’. Today, it’s a peaceful coastal town, still thriving on its links with the water. The size of catches displayed in the swordfish club’s trophy room was breathtaking. Back on the mainland at Paihia, we embarked on a 5km walk through forest and mangrove before picking up kayaks to take us within a stone’s throw of Haruru Falls and paddling back to the town. Waterfalls were to play a major part in an element of our trip which I’ll forever remember. I hadn’t abseiled since PGL

activity breaks while at Fleet Wood Lane Primary School more than 30 years ago. I was about to get reacquainted with it in spectacular fashion after returning south to the Coromandel Peninsula. The Sleeping God is a spectacular canyon and I had the chance to abseil, zipwire, jump and slide my way down 300 metres of it. The feeling of abseiling down a waterfall with the water gushing in my face was exhilarating and scary in equal measure. Oh, and there was a 10m high leap into a rockpool too! Much more laid back was our evening at Tamaki Maori Village. We heard about the history and culture of New Zealand’s first

settlers, enjoyed dance and song (including the famous haka) and sat down to a sumptuous hangi (a traditional meal of meats, fish and vegetables cooked in steam underground). Further south is Taupo, a town on the cusp of the second largest lake in the southern hemisphere, which is actually a volcanic crater and 200m at its deepest point. Here, Kian got to spend time in the town’s primary school. It was a marvellous experience for him to share stories of his trip with a class and see learning in a different culture. We’re road schooling him as well as we can and he’s enjoying learning about the countries we

visit and seeing their marvellous sights at first hand. As I write, we’re about to embark on the the 3.5hr ferry trip across the Cook Strait to the South Island where the fjords, glaciers and towns of Christchurch, Queenstown and Wanaka await. And then it’s on to Australia on November 20. We’ll let you know how that all goes in the next edition.

elcome to my first column about all things baby! My name is Annette and I run (with lots of help from other lovely people) The Village Midwives. We offer a range of services and advice in all aspects of pregnancy, birth and beyond. When I don’t have my Village Midwives hat on, I am Mum to George, a larger than life 6 and half year old, a midwife, a smallholder, a crafter (fabric, I love fabric!) and a lover of nature. There’s nothing quite like the outdoors to reset your mind and body. Over the next few months we are going to explore all sorts of topics from fertility to pain relief in labour, to weaning and baby sleep problems. If there’s anything you would like me to cover please let us know what you want to read about! It’s almost Christmas and should you believe what was written, a very pregnant lady was travelling uncomfortably on a donkey, right about now. I’m certain that anyone who has been pregnant can empathise with being uncomfortable at one point or another, especially towards the end. Bits of your body ache that you didn’t even know existed! From one woman who remembers those aches and pains very well indeed, here are my tops 5 tips for looking after yourself when pregnant: Be kind to yourself – this applies to every stage of pregnancy and parenting, not just when you have a bump. There are going to be good days and bad days, and days that you just can’t manage to do what you did yesterday. You haven’t failed, you aren’t going to be a terrible parent – you just need to give yourself a break and know that you are about to birth a whole tiny new human. If your back is too sore to do the hoovering…the universe will be ok with that! Ask for help – help for the discomforts of pregnancy is widely available. Try something new; massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, herbal medicine…the sky is the

limit. This isn’t limited to the end of pregnancy. Nip things in the bud in the earlier weeks and you can save yourself a lot of heart (and back) ache. Google is your friend, but friends with word-of-mouth recommendations are better! Keep things simple – the more complicated you make things, the more anxious you are going to be over whether they have been done ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. Your baby won’t be forever scarred if your nursery furniture doesn’t all match, if you don’t own a Diaper Genie or a Perfect Prep machine. Babies need somewhere to sleep, something to wear, something to eat and Love. Lots and lots of Love. And maybe some nappies. Definitely nappies. Don’t ride on a donkey - Mary did a fabulous job but she had no choice. Taking the hard route physically or mentally when you don’t have to, is not going to do you any favours. Where ever possible, treat yourself well. Rest. Sleep. Nourish your body and baby. This doesn’t mean lie on the sofa for 9 months and consume your body weight in Maltesers, but neither should you push yourself to the limits of endurance. Find a balance. Find your village – you don’t wait to learn to ride a bicycle until you need it, and the same can be said for your Village. A Village is your Tribe. The people that are going to make your life better and easier once baby is here. This might be your family or friends, but it might not. Find out what your local services are, get savvy about breastfeeding support (believe me, when you need help at 2am you want to know who you’re ringing in advance!) and find women who can support you in a positive and nurturing way.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas Annette Xx

Choosing

Your Tree! With just a few weeks left until Christmas, it’s time to start thinking about decorating the house – and choosing your perfect Christmas tree.

W

hen it comes to finding the right one, the first thing is decide whether you’re going to have either a real or fake tree. Although there’s nothing like the smell and look of a real fir or spruce in the house, it’s worth considering an artificial tree. Designs have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years, with many versions now looking just like the real thing. In addition a fake tree won’t drop needles all over your carpet, it won’t need watering or caring for, plus if you’ve got children or pets it might be a safer alternative. And, in the long run, you’ll only have to pay once and will be able to use the same tree year after year. However, if you’re adamant it’s got to be real, there are several things to remember when choosing one. Size – make sure you don’t pick a tree that is too big / tall for the space you have. Type – Fir trees are the most popular variety as they tend to hang on to their needles longer, as opposed to the Norwegian spruce, which dries out quicker. Care – The better you look after your tree the longer it will last. Do you want a cut or rooted one? Most people opt for a cut

24 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

tree as their gardens won’t accommodate a rooted tree after Christmas. Once you take it home, try to acclimatise your tree to its new surroundings by putting it in a shed or garage for a day or so, to allow it to warm up gradually. If it’s a cut tree, saw a couple of centimetres off the base – this will enable it to draw up water more easily. Put it in a stand with a solid base, where you can add water and make sure it’s not near a direct heat source. And now you’ve chosen your tree, the fun really begins – it’s time to decorate it. * Make it a real family affair and get everyone involved * Add the lights first – make sure they work before you put them on * Now add the decorations. Think about your colour scheme beforehand. Will you have a theme or use certain coloured baubles? Will they be hand-made or family heirlooms? * Hang your baubles according to size, starting with the largest at the bottom, with droplet shaped ones on the branch ends, and your more treasured, fragile ones towards the top of the tree. * Finally add your finishing touches – tinsel or ribbon around the tree and a star or angel on top.

Renault Koleos 2017 PROS ‘N’ CONS à Comfortable à Refined à Commanding à Off-Road Ability à Insipid Looks

T

he Renault Koleos won’t rock your world, but it’s a decent enough SUV. It looks a bit too like many other SUVs out there – most noticeably the Skoda Kodiaq, but it’s an impressive car, nonetheless. I got behind the wheel of the flagship trim level – the Signature Nav, which has a generous amount of Kit, comprising big 19-inch alloy wheels, a sat-nav, a touchscreen and leather-bound seats. The car’s infotainment system, accessed via the touchscreen is easy and self-explanatory to use, and the Renault is practical, offering cubby holes and four USB slots. What’s more, the Koleos is endowed with good quality soft-touch plastics and the hide wrapping the seats and steering wheel is top notch. The top-of-the-tree 2.0 dCi 175 AWD X-Tronic Koleos I drove really is the bee’sknees, in terms of out-and-out technology and cabin refinement. The layout is well thought out for driver and passengers, and room is more than respectable. The wheelbase is the same as the X-Trail’s at 2,705mm – and this equates to awesome legroom. Better still, the Koleos’ load area is 29 litres bigger than the Nissan’s – measuring 579 litres. Alas, take a tape-measure to the similar-looking Skoda Kodiaq and the Czech-made car’s boot is 630 litres. Oh well, you can’t have everything. Strangely the Gallic car brand isn’t providing the Koleos with a seven-seat option, though. This could be a deal-breaker as Skoda’s Kodiaq does. Renault gets away with it, however, by explaining that you can always go for the Grand Scenic if you need all those seats. On the road, the Renault Koleos is wellbehaved and easy to like. Zero to 62mph arrives in 9.5 seconds and the top speed is 125mph, so the car has plenty of ‘go’ for motorway commutes or for overtakes on lesser roads. The Koleos has 174 horses

FAST FACTS ((2.0 dCi 175 AWD X-Tronic 2017 - as tested ) under its ample bonnet to provide such power, and this helps tug the car along, even with fiveup and a fully laden boot. The auto ‘box isn’t bad, even though it’s a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This means the transmission shifts through a constant range of ratios. Alas, CVTs don’t always work as seamlessly as they should, resulting in a rather jerky driving experience. Nevertheless, I’m pleased to report Renault has stuck an advanced CVT into the Koleos that uses technology to copy a sequential ‘box. This makes the car painless to operate. The Koleos’ ride is super comfy, with its soft suspension making you all but forget the existence of potholes. But the squidgy springs don’t wreck the handling; if anything, the French SUV comes across as predictable and steady. The Koleos I drove had all-wheeldrive, so I also tested it off-road. Because the car has good ground clearance I could drive it over stones and hummocks without fear of ripping bits off the underneath of the Koleos. Furthermore, the Renault grips well in mud and anything not resembling tarmac. It’s no Land Rover, but it’s a great asset to have if you live in the sticks, or you plan on lugging a tin-tent to a grassy

caravan park or suchlike. The Koleos is a car that is roomy and wellappointed. It also flies the luxury SUV flag for Renault. This means it could attract fresh customers to the brand who are looking for an SUV with a bit of French flair. First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups
