DEAR MUSEUM FRIENDS, Look at all we could do....because of you! The Children’s Museum of Phoenix welcomed over 325,000 visitors this fiscal year and was designated as one of the top three children’s museums in the nation by the Early Childhood Education Zone. The Museum also provided 50,000 free/reduced admissions to underserved children and families in our community, presented over 500 educational programs, and welcomed nearly 29,000 school children visiting on fields trips.

Major support from the APS and Steele Foundations made it possible for us to expand our play experiences by opening our STEM-rich BlockMania! exhibit. In addition: we’ve shepherded new supporters of the Museum through the formation of a high-impact network of emerging leaders known as Playmakers/Young Professionals Network; increased our earned income opportunities with adults-only events; continued our role as a caregiver resource with workshops dedicated to providing caregivers with the tools they need to help their children reach their full potential; and engaged hundreds of families in the WIC program through free memberships to encourage them to visit early and often - maximizing the positive impact the Museum can have on their family’s lives. In today’s world, playtime is being eliminated from children’s lives. Schools are cutting back or doing away with recess altogether in favor of more didactic learning environments - this in spite of more and more research showing the importance of play in a child’s life. Now, more than ever, children’s museums are playing a vital role in early childhood development. Free form play is how children make sense of their world, build self esteem, test their limits, learn patience and make new friends -- laying the foundation for critical skills that will lead them to become confident, successful adults. The Children’s Museum of Phoenix is a place specifically devoted to the concept of early learning through play. It is a place made especially for children, with experiences that are driven by what they want to do and how they want to do it -- an empowering place where the child takes the lead, and the adult follows. Ninety percent of a child’s brain develops in the first five years of life; more than 80% in the first three! Therein lies the Museum’s greatest potential for social impact -- reaching young children when their minds and imaginations are most ripe for learning. The Children’s Museum of Phoenix is a strong, healthy, financially responsible organization. And in the year ahead, we will continue to grow and expand with new programs, exhibits, spaces and workshops and by opening up new spaces that support our mission of engaging the minds, muscles, and imaginations of children and the grown-ups who care about them. While we thank the leadership team of the Museum, our Board of Directors and dedicated staff for their continued commitment to the Museum, none of our accomplishments could have been realized without you -- our supporters. Your investment in the Children’s Museum of Phoenix gives back in multiple ways through benefiting our children and their futures. We are profoundly grateful.

Every Child Program | WIC Committed to ensuring that as many children as possible can experience the Museum’s richlearning environment, the Children’s Museum of Phoenix provides 50,000 free or reduced Museum admissions to low-income, at-risk children and their families annually. In June, the Children’s Museum of Phoenix began a partnership with Adelante Healthcare, to provide eligible WIC (Women, Infants and Children) families so that they can utilize its rich and varied learning experiences. Adelante Healthcare runs the WIC program which is available to Arizona’s pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants and children under the age of five who are at nutritional risk and who are at or below the 185% of the federal poverty guideline. Museum membership provides programming opportunities that encourage healthy development of a child’s well-being and are offered to WIC members at no cost. Each membership allows free access to the Children’s Museum of Phoenix for the card holder plus seven guests and includes the same benefits as with any other membership sold at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. WIC members remain Museum members as long as they are part of the WIC program. To date, 1,425 Museum memberships have been given out to WIC members.

This free membership program falls under the Museum’s Every Child Program. “The Children’s Museum of Phoenix is committed to providing museum access to our entire community, regardless of their ability to pay,” said Kate Wells, CEO of the Museum. “The WIC program is particularly important because it serves infants and children under the age of five. Being able to provide them free access to the Museum’s learning experiences gives us the opportunity to have the most impact on these children at a critical time in their development.”

The Children’s Museum was thrilled to launch its summer camp program this year! Throughout June and July the Museum was filled with happy campers enjoying four different themed weeks of fun. Campers discovered the everyday heroes among us in Super Hero Adventure camp, explored this great nation in Ready, Set, Road-Trip!, discovered the wonders of water, facts about fire, anything air, and everything earth in Element Explorers and took the stage and explored their inner star power in Hollywood Hall of Fame. In our inaugural summer camp season, we had 194 enthusiastic campers participate! At the end of the camp season, the Museum surveyed camper families to measure outcomes and the feedback was amazing! Here is a small sampling of the praise we received! My daughter loved both weeks of the camp that she attended--after her first day, she told me she could not wait for the next day so that she could go back. She was that excited and happy every day. We will definitely be back for another session! My daughter liked camp and the staff so much, that I cancelled other camps and enrolled her in additional weeks at the Children’s Museum. Camp was the best and all the staff were warm and welcoming. The kids had a blast! They came home happy, bursting with stories and singing songs! My child quoted this as the “Best Camp Ever!!” He has been going to other summer camps for the last three years but this was his first summer camp at a children’s museum. He thought this camp was the best with “the most fun ever.”

Volunteers - An Integral Part of the Museum Volunteers are a valuable and integral part of our business. In the past year alone, 700 volunteers contributed a total of 7,181 hours to our Museum. They provided a wide range of support to multiple departments: from serving as staff support at our special events like our Target Free First Friday Nights, Adults-only Play Date, SandFest and our Children’s Museum Gala; to helping our exhibits team keep our exhibits clean through our Adopt-an-Exhibit program and by binding books which are used in our Book Loft and throughout the Museum; to providing administrative support through tasks like cutting, sorting, stamping and collating.

In return, we provide professional development and networking opportunities and a unique and fun way to give back to the children and families in our community. The Volunteer Program at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix is funded by a generous grant from the American Express Foundation. Thank you American Express Foundation for your support of this valuable Museum program.

Planned Giving: Impacting Our Future Making a planned gift helps ensure that the Children’s Museum of Phoenix can meet our goals for current and future generations. Terry Hanson, friend of the Children’s Museum since its infancy, has created a lasting legacy while helping the Children’s Museum of Phoenix by including the Museum in his estate planning. An avid arts supporter, and advocate for early childhood education, Terry is a treasured friend of the Museum who will be remembered for generations to come. Planned gifts can take many forms, but the most popular are bequests (a gift made through a will), charitable trust, life insurance policy or beneficiary designation in a retirement plan. With life insurance, donors can select a charity to be the beneficiary of a portion or all of a policy. To learn more about making a planned gift to the Children’s Museum of Phoenix or to notify us of your future intentions in ensuring that the Museum will be a centerpiece for future generations, please contact: Debbie Paine Director of Development, Children’s Museum of Phoenix 602.648.2743 or dpaine@childmusephx.org
