Children’s Museum of Phoenix ANNUAL REPORT

July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023 Engaging the minds, muscles and imaginations of children and the grown-ups who care about them.

A Message From Our CEO Dear Friends, As we reflect on the past year at our Museum, I am filled with joy and optimism for the impact we continue to have on young minds. This year was particularly special as we celebrated our 15th birthday on June 14th. Fifteen years sparking imagination and curiosity! For over a decade, we have welcomed children and families from across the community to explore, play, and learn through the power of hands-on exhibits. I am thrilled to share that we welcomed our 4 millionth visitor this year. Overall attendance grew by 46% compared to the previous year, welcoming over 360,000 visitors this year -- our highest attended year to date. This remarkable growth speaks to the community's enduring appreciation for the value of playful learning and family bonding. Nurturing children's natural creativity and curiosity remains our guiding purpose. Our annual fundraising gala, Night at the Museum, and our annual SandFest event both benefited our Every Child Program, providing free and reduced Museum admission to children and their families who wouldn’t normally be able to pay the price of admission. Our commitment to IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) remains one of our highest priorities as we continue to mold a workforce reflective of diverse backgrounds through our IDEA Fellows Program and as we feature artists to celebrate diverse cultures with our guests. In recognition of the Indigenous Peoples upon whose land the Museum was built, we formally adopted a land acknowledgement this year. Through this statement, we reaffirm our commitment to truth, understanding and mutual respect. Our land acknowledgement is included in this annual report. As we look ahead, I am confident our Museum will continue to be a beloved community asset that brings families together for shared joy and discovery. Our future is bright, and we could not achieve this without your ongoing support. Thank you for being part of our journey. With gratitude, Kate Wells Chief Executive Officer P.S. While this is an annual report for our 22-23 fiscal year, I wanted to share with you that in early November of this year, the City of Phoenix GO Bond passed and includes $5.37 million for major capital projects at the Children’s Museum! Keep your eye out for more news on that soon!

THE EVERY CHILD PROGRAM To ensure that all children in our community can visit the Museum, the Children’s Museum of Phoenix aims to provide free or reduced admission access to approximately 75,000 people each year through the Every Child Program. This program allows low-income or at-risk children and families to access the Museum’s rich learning environment and experience programs and exhibits that reach out to any audience. This fiscal year the Museum is proud to have welcomed a total of 75,249 visitors through the Every Child Program for a total value of $1,016,508.

A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM On November 5th, 2022 the Museum came roaring to life after-hours at our 14th annual Children’s Museum Gala – Night at the Museum. 300 guests enjoyed an evening filled with surprises and discoveries including dinner and dancing under the stars, an exciting live auction, dancing, and a silent disco after-party. This incredible event raised $290,000 in support of our Every Child Program helping to build stronger children, stronger families, and stronger communities.

SPRINGTIME MEANS BEACH TIME March brought 175 tons of sand to the Museum’s north parking lot for our annual SandFest event. Held on Saturday, March 25th, 2023 the day offered plenty of sand play for kids and their families plus live entertainment, outdoor activities, food trucks and professional sculptors, The Sand Guys, who were front and center putting the finishing touches on their signature sand sculpture. Festivities included the exciting sand‐sculpting competition among Valley businesses vying for the coveted Golden Shovel. Over 2,100 people attended this sand-sational day in support of our Every Child Program. Mayor Kate Gallego helped to judge the sand-sculpting competition along with visitors who joined in the fun and voted for their favorite sand sculpture. Thank you to our SandFest teams: Barker Pacific Group, Immedia Audio Video Solutions, Intel, Orcutt|Winslow/CORE Construction, PADT, Inc., SmithGroup/Okland/Dibble, SmithGroup/McCarthy, Tokyo Electron, and B2Gnow. The Museum gratefully acknowledges Fisher Sand & Gravel and Preferred Materials for their generosity and support in donating all of the sand for SandFest. FUNergy joined the festivities once again this year in a salute to the 100th anniversary of Disney with beloved character meet & greets and photo ops throughout the day. Character appearances were generously sponsored by Legacy Traditional Schools.

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY In our continuing commitment to IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility), the Museum was honored to feature special artists such as Fiesta Mexicana dancers, Etsitty Group Pow Wow Dancers, and Sampradaya Dancers of India to celebrate diverse cultures with our guests. We also had the pleasure of displaying the artwork of local artists Aileen Martinez celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, Damian Jim & John Rodriguez for Native American Heritage Month, Derrick Snead & Kenneth Elliott Webb for Black History Month and Nancy Chong for Asian American/Pacific Islander Month.

HONORING INDIGENOUS INHABITANTS: THE MUSEUM’S LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT In March, the Museum, along with our IDEA Committee, finalized a formal statement acknowledging the Native Peoples on whose ancestral homelands the Museum is on, as well as the diverse and vibrant Native communities who make their home here today. An integral part of the Museum’s communications to both internal and external audiences, the Museum’s Land Acknowledgement reads as follows: We respectfully acknowledge that the Children’s Museum of Phoenix is located on the traditional lands of the Akimel O’odham (Pima). We recognize, celebrate, and honor the diverse ancestry of the Indigenous peoples of modern-day Arizona; being the original stewards of this land, they are an important part of our history, present, and future. As an arts, culture, and educational organization, we are committed to preserving and uplifting multi-generational contributions through our programs and exhibits.

OUR IDEA FELLOWS This was the second year of our IDEA Fellows Program which seeks candidates in post-secondary education and exceptional high school seniors who are impacted by systemic barriers and provides semester-long, paid fellowship opportunities in finance/administration, marketing, development, and educational programming. The Fellowship’s overarching objectives are to impact the students through a meaningful, supportive work experience and extensive networking opportunities and to benefit the Museum and the communities we serve through their diverse perspectives.
