Life is all about choices.

M

uch of what happened during 2020, you didn’t choose. It was a year more extreme than most for the scale and scope of its awfulness. If you saw the latest Super Bowl, you probably remember the commercial that featured lemons falling from the sky, relentlessly pelting anyone and everyone in a depiction of the past year. The TV version was funny. The real-life version was not.

The commercial made a point, though. Sometimes, we can’t choose our circumstances or what’s happening around us. Still, we can always choose our reaction. We can opt to make lemonade.

In 2020, lots of people chose to help make life better for children. The world may have seemed unstable and harsh, but they chose to do something constructive. They made a gift to Children’s HealthSM. In fact, all together, they chose to give 41% more in 2020 than the year before.

The result was better care for kids who needed it. A breakthrough discovery that can lead to cures on the frontline of battling cancer. And more community resources to keep kids healthy where they live, learn and play—including their mental health.

COVID-19 didn’t stop kids’ illnesses and injuries from happening. And thankfully, COVID-19 also didn’t stop thousands of people from stepping forward with their support to say, even during the tough times, “I choose Children’s Health.”

We’re proud to feature many of their faces in this issue.

Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine

F

rom prenatal diagnosis and time in the NICU, to ongoing developmental care, our collaborative and compassionate neonatal/perinatal team is equipped to treat and care for the most critically ill babies from newborns to children through age 5.

Children’s Health is home to some of the nation’s top neonatologists and developmental pediatric specialists who utilize the latest technologies to help babies grow in the hospital and thrive at home.

In 2020, our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was re-designated as a Level IV—the highest possible level—meaning we offer care for the most complex and critically

ill newborns, and never have to refer a baby to another hospital for care. In fact, the NICU at Children’s Medical Center Dallas is the only nationally ranked Level IV NICU in North Texas.

Children’s Health continually identifies and implements new solutions to improve the care of neonates across the region. Now, infants and babies are able to receive urgent, world-class care even faster thanks to the newly launched neonatal TeleTransport program.

One of the only programs of its kind in the U.S., this virtual capability enables our neonatologists to work with our transport team at other hospitals to visually assess the baby;

speak with referring doctors and parents; and help optimize a baby’s condition before being transported to Children’s Health. Importantly, the virtual correspondence continues during transport, where our physicians can monitor the patient in real time and provide minute-byminute care to keep the baby as stable as possible.

Philanthropic support plays a significant role in the development, continuation and expansion of various new programs and initiatives for these tiny patients and their families—all of which contribute to the program’s reputation, accolades and trust from families and providers across the region.

yle clipped the helmet under her 4-year-old son’s chin.

“Now, you can go really fast,” she said to George, as his feet pushed the pedals of his bicycle forward, looping the shiny blue bike in circles around the driveway.

“You’re doing so good, George,” Kyle shouted from the grassy backyard.

These simple, everyday snapshots—bike rides through the neighborhood, meals at the dinner table as a family of three—are moments Kyle and her husband, Erik, don't take for granted, even four years later.

Born prematurely at a local hospital in 2016, George entered the world weighing just over 1 pound.

Music Therapy

usic Therapy at Children’s Health continues to serve as an important aid to help patients and families cope with hospitalization and improve their physical, psychological and emotional well-being.

Board-certified music therapists are trained to use a variety of musical experiences to create a therapeutic relationship with patients and family members.

The music therapy program began more than 20 years ago and is a recognized leader in the field, including providing opportunities for students from around the country to complete internships and train at Children’s Health. Music therapists from our program maintain a strong presence in the community and present information to various hospital and community groups, including department trainings, college visits, schools and current and potential students.

In response to COVID-19, many

in-person music therapy programs transitioned to virtual offerings, including performances to patients through the Virtual Babysitters Club, virtual game night, virtual support groups, drive-through parades and weekly shows featured on Red Balloon Network, which is produced in the hospital and broadcast to patient rooms.

More than 7,000 patients and nearly 4,000 family members were seen by music therapists in 2020. Our unique and extensive offerings are not eligible for reimbursement through insurance or government subsidies, making philanthropy the key resource that maintains music therapy as a special therapeutic arts service.

Over the last year, philanthropic contributions supported musical instruments, bereavement bears for grieving families, our intern training program and technology needs for therapists to transition to a hybrid schedule of virtual and in-person sessions.

Because he was so tiny, he was at-risk for several health issues.

His body had trouble digesting nutrients. Doctors had to monitor his eyes because they weren’t fully developed. And he struggled to get off the ventilator and breathe on his own.

Needing more acute care, George was transferred to a higher level Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Children’s Health.

Erik and Kyle were nervous about the change, but looking back, they say it was the most critical decision

they made during those first few months of George’s life.

“That decision put him on the best path, and ultimately, impacted the entire trajectory of his life,” Erik said.

“He was immediately surrounded by doctors, nurses and therapists who were giving him the best care. They cared not only about George but about our entire family.”

Grateful to the clinical team who provided life-saving care for their son, Erik and Kyle made a generous gift to support the NICU at Children’s Health. Kyle also joined

Cures Family donates $1 million to treatment and research of Hodgkin’s lymphoma to honor the doctors, nurses who cared for their son

ino and Catherine Sabatini stared at the scan of their 17-year-old son’s body that included a mass the size of a fist on top of his heart.

Standing in the Emergency Room at Children’s Health, their minds began to race.

“We saw this picture of our kid covered from his neck down with nodules of cancer,” Gino said. “We thought, ‘How can you have a picture like that and live?’”

Their oldest of two children was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in June 2019—the summer before his senior year of high school.

For about half-a-year, he was cared for and treated by an army of team members in the Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Health.

As a tribute to their son’s care team, the Sabatini family—joined by the W.P. Carey Foundation—surprised

clinicians in December during a Zoom call with the announcement of a $1 million donation to establish The Dr. Martha Pacheco and Ruth Anne Herring Fund for the Treatment and Research of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

“To you, Dr. Pacheco and to Ruth Anne, thank you for your understanding of our son and who he is. You saw that right away. Your straightforwardness in the way you cared for him is what he wanted, and your lightheartedness is

what he needed,” Catherine said. “To all of you at the Gill Center who treat families like us, you are extraordinary, and I’m overwhelmed by what you do.”

he symptoms began a year before his diagnosis. There were headaches, rashes, a lingering cough.

Later, while skiing in Colorado, he developed stomach pain. Gino and Catherine rushed their son to the ER, thinking it was appendicitis.

By the spring semester of his junior year, he continued to feel worse. And when he landed in the ER at Children’s Health in the summer of 2019, he had a lump in his neck.

Doctor’s diagnosed the teenager with Hodgkin’s lymphoma—the most common cancer in 15- to 19-year-olds, which accounts for about 70% of childhood lymphoma cases in the U.S. each year.

Gino and Catherine were stunned.

Not from Dallas and unfamiliar with Children’s Health, they asked for their

son’s scans to be sent to another pediatric hospital on the East Coast for confirmation.

And while they waited, they began to decide how they would move forward.

“Initially, because we’d never heard of Children’s Health and didn’t know anything about it, we wondered if we should drive down to MD Anderson.

Should we go to Memphis to St. Jude?

Is Children’s Health the best place in the world? Because that’s where we want to be,” Gino said.

But the Gill Center stood out for its record and experience in treating Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients.

The Gill Center’s Lymphoma Program routinely treats Hodgkin’s lymphoma, caring for up to 30 newly diagnosed patients each year.

Clinicians have experience in every form of childhood Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma—from the rarest to the most common. And here, patients can receive the most advanced therapies for childhood lymphoma through participation in clinical research.

“We felt like they’re going to be able to handle whatever happens and take care of our son,” Gino said.

Searching for answers to how your gut’s ‘good guy bugs’ help fight pediatric cancer

B

ehind the door marked “Koh Lab,” masked doctors in white coats peer into microscopes.

A whiteboard is scribbled with science notes, and liquids tagged with handwritten masking tape are squeezed onto shelves.

This is the space where Dr. Andrew Koh, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology at UT Southwestern, has built a career caring for some of North Texas’ sickest children.

He’s looking for answers about how the “good guy bugs” in your gut—as he calls them—shape your immune system to prevent infections, block autoimmune complications and help you fight cancer.

He’s trying to understand how the gut microbiome impacts the immune system of cancer and stem cell transplant patients so he can develop new therapies to help his patients.

He and his team of researchers are one of the few pediatric groups in the world searching for these clues.

“Being a physician scientist is a really, really hard gig,” said Dr. Koh, Director of Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation at Children’s Health, which now performs on average 40 to 50 stem cell transplants a year—double the number of life-saving treatments from a decade earlier.

“You have to have this really crazy curiosity—we call it fire in the belly.

And you’ve got to be really stubborn and persistent. Those are the folks who can survive.”

But the advancement of Dr. Koh’s research depends on a steady stream of financial support.

For the last several years, he has held the endowed Edwin B. Jordan Master Physician in Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation at Children’s Health, which the Jordan family established several years ago in honor of their problem-solving father who passed away in 2006.

Edwin “Ed” Jordan was a businessman who, with his family, developed and constructed hotels

around the world, as well as many commercial and residential properties in Texas and across the nation. He was also involved in health and educational causes and was a former board member of the Children’s Medical Center Foundation. His daughter, Anne Jordan Logan, now holds his seat.

“My dad was very proud to be a part of Children’s Health. He would have been honored to be a part of this groundbreaking work to change the lives of young people,” said Anne, who worked alongside her dad with her brothers in a family real estate partnership. “After he died, we wanted

to recognize and honor him in an area he contributed to for many years. We established an endowment so the gift would be ongoing.”

A few years ago, Dr. Koh’s lab employed five people and he had one National Institutes of Health grant. He credits the support of the Jordan family for spurring his research forward.

Now, his lab includes about a dozen researchers, and he has three NIH grants and funding from pharmaceutical industry partners supporting his mission.

The hope: To land on an answer in the next couple of decades to change clinical care for pediatric cancer.

Children’s Medical Center Foundation receives $7.5 million challenge grant to support innovative mental health initiative

M

ental health is one of the largest, most complicated and costly challenges in pediatric health care, crossing all ethnicities and socioeconomic levels.

And these challenges have only been exacerbated by COVID-19.

Despite rising youth suicide rates and an increase in online bullying, Texas ranks near last in the nation for child and adolescent access to mental health services, according to the 2019 Beyond ABC report published by Children’s Health.

The current approach to pediatric

mental health cannot keep up with the present demand and the growing number of children living in North Texas.

In 2020, Children’s Medical Center Foundation received an external challenge grant of $7.5 million from long-time Children’s Health supporter the Hamon Charitable Foundation, which was established by the late Jake and Nancy Hamon.

The generous challenge grant is given to encourage and inspire others to help launch an initiative that will educate and train

pediatricians, equipping them to diagnose and treat low to moderate depression and anxiety.

A collaboration between Children’s Health and Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute aims to directly address these challenges, but it will take philanthropy to make it happen.

Children’s Medical Center Foundation is currently raising funds to meet this challenge and continue charting a path forward.

And we need the support of the entire community to join us and meet the challenge!

Donations help SPARC grow its reach to help pediatric patients struggling with depression, suicide during COVID-19

T

he Suicide Prevention and Resilience at Children’s (SPARC) program is a key feature of the care offered by Children’s Health to youth following times of personal and psychological crisis.

This evidence-based, intensive outpatient program makes an incredible difference in the lives of suicidal children, decreasing depressive symptoms and suicide risk and helping them plan for and manage times of concern. Through group, individual and family therapy; parent support groups; case management; and access to a psychiatrist, the team keeps children safe and healthy.

This was especially important in 2020 as many confronted personal struggles amid an isolating year due to COVID-19. In-person programming was adjusted to allow for social distancing and virtual platforms were utilized for assessments and therapeutic activities.

In further response to the need to support families during COVID-19, multiple blogs, articles and media contributions about youth depression and suicide were developed by our specialists to help families navigate this incredibly trying and difficult time.

Additionally, suicide prevention and depression experts conducted training for students, teachers and clinicians across North Texas throughout the year to better serve our community’s youth; they also trained providers throughout the Children’s Health system regarding coping mechanisms and strategies for families in crisis they may encounter, like the emergency room.

The SPARC program has been able to accomplish so much with support from generous donors.

These investments in 2020 were critical for the social and emotional well-being of so many youth during unprecedented challenges.

How philanthropy plays a crucial role in the SPARC program: • Helps fund the cost of care not covered by insurance reimbursement • Extends strategies for suicide prevention within Children’s Health • Enables experts to train others so that children outside the walls of Children’s Health can access this life-saving care

Children’s Health to expand Plano campus with 300,000-square-foot tower

hildren’s Health has steadily implemented multiple initiatives to continue providing world-class care to the rapidly growing North Texas pediatric population. Whether through direct care in our facilities, partnerships with local school districts or with collaborative community-based initiatives, our commitment is to improve the health and lives of children.

After more than a decade of serving children and families north of Dallas, our Children’s Medical Center Plano campus will undergo a major expansion, including the addition of a 300,000-square-foot tower that will house expanded specialty care programs, such as cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, orthopedics and neurology, among others.

The new tower, which will nearly

double the size of the hospital facility, will increase the total number of available beds from 72 to 240 and is expected to be complete by 2024.

Plans also include additional operating room space, an upgraded emergency room relocated on campus, enhanced patient family amenities and supportive programs,

and even a new dog park to give our beloved therapy dogs a dedicated place to play and rest.

When our Plano campus opened in 2008, it was the first pediatric hospital in North Texas north of Dallas, and we are excited to continue our long-standing commitment to expand as the northern community grows.

Children’s Health team members reflect on how they cared for others in 2020

hen schools and businesses around us closed last year and many of us were required to stay at home, thousands of Children’s Health team members kept working.

Some provided services necessary for patient care and comfort. Others were relied on to keep our hospitals clean, and our families fed. And some pioneered innovative ways to be there for our patients, even if at a distance.

One year since COVID-19 took center stage in our world, we revisited some of the team members who shared stories last spring of

how the virus had impacted their lives. The Housekeeper: Who was the attacker of germs, wiping down surfaces and doorknobs to keep our hospitals clean and safe. The Nurse: Who left a profitable career in business to care for some of our community’s tiniest and sickest. The Child Life Specialists and Music Therapists: Who brought laughter to patients isolated from the outside world.

We asked them what 2020 taught them, what is bringing them hope in 2021 and why they continue to choose Children’s Health.

Here’s what they said.

NOW: In December, I began to work in the COVID-19 vaccine clinic at Children’s Medical Center Plano, and I was the first team member at the Plano campus to receive the vaccine. I was honored to play a part in the vaccine distribution.

People would say to me, “You’re saving lives.” I knew what we were doing was important, but to see people with tears in their eyes as they received the vaccine was heartwarming.

NOW: My first priority is keeping the hospital clean and everything sanitized. The first line of defense is killing germs and washing hands, so what I do at Children’s Health is crucial. I’m always wiping down doorknobs and surfaces. I take a lot of pride in my cleaning. After the last year, I feel like a hero. I’m proud of myself and everyone I work with. I love seeing the patients and making them smile. I know we can’t ignore the virus, but I try to make every day fun and positive.

THEN: I’ll go into patient rooms and do their cleanings. But the most important part to me is making the families laugh and making them feel comfortable when I’m there. I’m really passionate about cleaning and very thorough. You go onto the sixth or fifth floors, they’ll tell you. They speak highly of me. I work with a lot of positive ladies. These days, we’re dancing at work. We even have the doctors dancing sometimes.

THEN: I’m pre-assigned to the COVID-19 response team to treat patients who test positive or presumptive positive for the virus.

I felt prepared and trained by the hospital for this. As nurses, this is what we signed up for, and I was ready and proud to be part of the team. Nursing has completely changed my life and opened up my eyes. When you walk out of the hospital after seeing kids all day fight for their lives, it gives you perspective. It’s honestly made me a better man.

NOW: I think 2020 showed us we need each other and that you have to work together to be successful. The last year pushed me professionally and personally, and I learned you really are stronger than you think. I saw Children’s Health pull together and do whatever it takes to make life better for children.

One of my proudest moments for my team is when we converted the VGo robot (donor-funded robotic technology that helps children too sick to attend school in person participate in their classes virtually) to be the teacher.

We took something we thought was impossible, and we figured out a solution so that our patients were able to still receive an education.

THEN: The library is closed, but we have some options for families to access activities online. Closing the library was a difficult decision because I knew it was a resource temporarily unavailable to our families. A space to have fun with their toys or read a book. But with social distancing and the hospital implementing extra safety measures, we knew it was the right— but difficult—thing to do.

NOW: Even though the last year was a difficult time for a lot of people, we still found things to be joyful about. Children’s Health did a great job making sure staff felt safe coming into the hospital and put in several measures to protect us, such as daily health screenings, mask wearing and temperature checks.

Last year, I also began pursuing my master’s degree in health care administration, and I’m grateful for the support of Children’s Health and my director to help me grow professionally.

THEN: Patient support for each other looks a little different now.

They can’t just sit on the floor and play a game with one another.

And at our community meal in the cafeteria, everyone isn’t at the same table. But they’re not far from one another. They’re still supporting each other, playing distraction games. They’re laughing and making jokes during mealtime, which has always been a challenging time for kids with eating disorders.

NOW: We’re always doing what we need to do to support our patients. Just because there’s a virus, doesn’t mean patients stop needing our support.

I’m a facility dog handler, and it brings me joy to see teenage boys who can be difficult to connect with light up when they see our Pet Therapy dog, Espen, and I walk into the room. Suddenly, they’re talking about what it’s like to have cancer.

Or there’s the withdrawn patient who comes out of her shell with music. One of my patients relapsed last year, and this time, he wanted to create a blog to process the experience as he does treatment a second time.

THEN: Our families in the hospital are still going through all the things they’ve always gone through. There are still beautiful things that happen.

You just have to be a lot more creative with how you interact with patients. Today was a great day. I had a little one who had been crying all day long. We ended up walking down the hallway. As I played the ukulele and began to sing, he slowly stopped crying. The nurses told me I was a miracle worker.

NOW: There are several kids in our eating disorders program who have said they can trace the start of some of their difficulties to the pandemic. We would never say COVID-19 caused an eating disorder. But for a lot of people, they might have already have been at-risk for mental health issues.

Then, you throw in a major stressor that isolates you from your friends and normal activities, and it creates this perfect storm.

Looking forward, I feel a lot of hope as more people return to work in the hospital. I’ve seen how people have reached out and supported one another. We still must be safe, but I know we’re going to get through this.

THEN: I’m an educator plus a quality coordinator for sterile processing. I make sure that our staff is up to date on the standards for sterile processing, as well as staff training and orientation. I was in the military for 14 years and after active duty transitioned into the medical field. Since COVID-19, I’ve never stopped coming into the hospital. We continue to reiterate to staff to be safe—wear a mask and wash your hands. We’ll push through this.

NOW: The last year was a year of learning. A year of reevaluating things for myself and my team. A year of looking at how we’ve done things in the past and seeing how we can change and adapt.

In Child Life, we’re used to throwing really good in-person events. Instead, we created what I call “party-on-the-go.” We bagged up games, toys and prizes and delivered them to patient rooms so we could still make the hospital experience special for families. We

had to learn that it’s OK for the unknown to be there, and you must grow within yourself and as a team to try something new.

And maybe, in the end, you’ll even discover a better way.

THEN: As a Child Life Specialist, I am there to support kids. But with a mask on, I have to make sure I am really introducing myself to patients and their families, letting them know I am here with care and compassion. You can learn a lot by looking at people’s eyes, but you have to make sure verbally they understand and not just rely on those social cues we’re so used to.

Children’s Research Institute at UT Southwestern

cientists and physicians who work at Children’s Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern (CRI) share the same determination to push the boundaries

of knowledge and to discover new strategies for treating disease.

Last year, researchers at CRI made significant strides in learning how cancer cells spread and how a treatment for patients with chronic

liver damage could prevent cancer later in life. The scientific community also recognized the dedication and tireless work of CRI researchers with several prestigious awards.

How lymph nodes help cancer cells spread

F

or decades, physicians have known that many kinds of cancer cells often spread first to lymph nodes, before traveling to distant organs through the bloodstream.

New research from CRI provides insight into why this occurs, unveiling new targets for treatments that could inhibit the spread of cancer.

The study, published in Nature and supported by Children’s Medical Center Foundation donors, found melanoma cells that pass through the lymph nodes pick up a protective coating, allowing them to survive high levels of oxidative stress in the blood and go on to form distant tumors.

Most cancer deaths happen after cancer spreads to other parts of the body through a process known as metastasis. This occurs when cancer cells from the primary tumor spread through blood vessels or migrate through lymphatic vessels before entering the blood.

“Previous research has focused on how cancer cells metastasize through the blood, but very little was known about how these cells compare to cells that metastasize through lymphatics,” said Sean Morrison, Ph.D., Director of CRI and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator. “Our data suggest that passing through the lymphatics can promote the survival and spread of melanoma cells by protecting the cells from the oxidative stress they normally experience during metastasis.”

The researchers observed how human melanoma cells behaved when injected intravenously or into the lymphatic system of mice.

They found that cancer cells injected into lymph nodes had a better chance of surviving and forming tumors than those injected directly into the blood.

Researchers hypothesized this difference could be explained by the high levels of oxidative stress cancer cells experience when they migrate through the blood.

Exposure to oxidative stress in the blood is one reason why metastasis is a very inefficient process in which most cancer cells die before they have an opportunity to grow at a distant site.

“After further analysis, we discovered that the oxidative stress in the blood causes the cancer cells to undergo a specific form of cell death called ferroptosis,” said Jessalyn Ubellacker, Ph.D., lead author of the study and a postdoctoral researcher in the Morrison lab.

The possibility of immunotherapy for liver cancer prevention

C

hronic liver damage raises the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)—the most common type of cancer that arises from liver tissues. In 2020, CRI researchers discovered that treating patients who have chronic liver damage with immunotherapy early on could prevent a liver cancer diagnosis later in life.

HCC is the fastestgrowing cause of cancerrelated death in the U.S. and one of the leading causes of death in patients with cirrhosis— the end result of any chronic liver disease.

“Modern lifestyles have made liver damage and disease a commonplace problem for Americans.

Many have the misconception that only people who drank heavily have liver problems. But in

reality, a huge number of people have these issues because of obesity, which can lead to diabetes, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis and potentially cancer,” said Dr. Hao Zhu, an Associate Professor at CRI. Since it can take years or decades for patients with cirrhosis to develop HCC, scientists in the Zhu lab recognized that a cancer prevention strategy could be an effective approach to limiting or even stopping the development of cancer in cirrhotic patients.

In order to identify drugs with potential to prevent cancer, researchers analyzed the genetic makeup of cells found in patients with cirrhosis for vulnerabilities. They found cirrhotic liver tissues harbored a significant amount of neoantigens—a type of altered protein

that only precancerous or cancerous cells express.

This observation made immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) a promising option since these drugs harness the immune system to kill mutant cancer cells by targeting neoantigens. These inhibitors are currently used as an effective treatment for many types of cancer, including HCC. When researchers tested ICIs on mice with chronic liver damage, they found these mice had 46% fewer tumors compared to untreated animals.

“These results encourage a prevention trial in cirrhotic patients with the highest risk of developing HCC,” said Dr. Zhu, who is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern.

Researchers uncover a potential treatment for an aggressive form of lung cancer

A

new metabolic vulnerability in a highly aggressive form of non-small cell lung cancer could pave the way for new treatments for patients with mutations in two key genes—KRAS and LKB1. Patients whose tumors contain both of these mutations, known as KL tumors, have poor outcomes and usually do not respond to immunotherapy.

“We used to think that most tumors rely on the same handful of metabolic pathways to grow, but we’ve learned over the last decade that this is an oversimplification.

Instead, different tumor subclasses have particular metabolic needs arising from mutations in key

genes. Understanding how specific combinations of mutations promote tumor growth and metastasis may allow us to design tailored therapies for patients,” said Ralph DeBerardinis, M.D., Ph.D., a Professor at CRI and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.

While mutations in either KRAS or LKB1 can alter metabolism individually, less is known about the metabolic needs when both genes are mutated in the same tumor. To uncover new metabolic vulnerabilities, the scientists compared metabolic properties of KL tumors genetically engineered in mice to tumors containing different mutations and to the

normal lung. In the study, they discovered that the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway (HBP) is activated in KL tumors. Genetically silencing or chemically inhibiting an enzyme in the HBP suppressed KL tumor growth in mice. The findings suggest enzymes in the HBP of KL tumors could be a useful target for this aggressive subtype of NSCLC. “Ultimately, we are looking for options that can help stop the growth and spread of these aggressive tumors,” said Jiyeon Kim, Ph.D., the Postdoctoral Fellow who led the study with DeBerardinis. Kim is now an assistant professor in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

alph DeBerardinis, M.D., Ph.D., a Professor at CRI, was elected in 2020 to the National Academy of Medicine—one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine.

Cancer metabolism expert Dr. Ralph DeBerardinis, who is also a UT Southwestern Professor of Pediatrics and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, is known for his significant discoveries in cancer metabolism and research into childhood conditions known as inborn errors of metabolism.

DeBerardinis is also the second

member of CRI to be elected to NAM, along with Sean Morrison, Ph.D., Director of CRI. “I’m so grateful to the academy for recognizing our work and for the people in my lab whose creativity and perseverance are responsible for the discoveries that led to this honor,” said DeBerardinis, who is also Chief of the Division of Pediatric Genetics and Metabolism at UT Southwestern and an Attending Physician at Children’s Health. “I am fortunate to be in an environment at UT Southwestern and Children’s

Health that values mechanistic, disease-focused research and cultivates the collaborative environment at CRI that has made our research possible.

Thanks also to my family for their patience and support, and to all the patients who have participated in our studies over many years.”

Dr. DeBerardinis’ achievements include helping to pioneer a new way to study altered metabolism directly in cancer patients.

This has allowed his team to uncover the mechanisms by which tumors use nutrients to produce energy and to

identify metabolic pathways that allow tumors to grow and spread. The approach provides researchers with insights impossible to obtain in the laboratory and is now being used to study metabolism in nearly a dozen forms of human cancer.

In 2020, Dr. DeBerardinis also was elected to the Association of American Physicians. Election to the AAP is considered a top honor in science and medicine as it recognizes researchers who have made impactful contributions to improve public health.

Decoding the hidden genetic changes in human blood cancers

utations in certain DNA sequences known as noncoding regulatory regions have the ability to rewire how genes are expressed during blood cancer development, according to research from Dr. Jian Xu’s lab at CRI. The findings could lead to new cancerdiagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

Noncoding DNA sequences account for 99% of the human genome and can contain regulatory information that determines where and when protein-coding genes are active. The role of mutations in noncoding regions has been overlooked by conventional genomesequencing analysis,

which is often focused on how genetic alterations in protein-coding sequences drive cancer formation.

The study, published in Cancer Discovery, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, describes new approaches to identify cancer-associated mutations in noncoding DNA sequences in human leukemia.

“A major limiting step towards understanding how damage to noncoding DNA sequences influences human cancer is the lack of high throughput and unbiased approaches to assess their biological effects,” said Dr. Xu, senior author of the study and Associate Professor at the CRI and in the

Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern.

To overcome this challenge, a team of investigators in the Xu lab developed an integrative approach to identify and characterize alterations of non-coding DNA in human leukemia that combined a number of different tools and methods (e.g., targeted deep sequencing of bloodassociated regulatory DNA sequences, mutation discovery, CRISPR/ dCas9-based epigeneticediting screens and mouse modeling).

“We are excited that the tools we’ve developed offer the research community an integrative framework to identify and functionally dissect noncoding regulatory variants in other human disorders,” says Dr. Xu.

r. Sean Morrison, Director of CRI and Professor of Pediatrics, was elected in 2020 to the National Academy of Sciences—one of the highest honors for American scientists.

Dr. Morrison is honored for his significant discoveries in stem cell biology and cancer.

His achievements include pioneering new methods to purify stem cells from multiple

tissues and discovering molecular mechanisms that allow stem cells to persist throughout life and regenerate tissues after injury.

“I appreciate the recognition of my laboratory’s work, and all of the talented students and postdocs who have worked in the lab over the years, many of whom are now running their own laboratories. Thank

you as well to my colleagues and collaborators in CRI, as well as in the broader UT Southwestern and Children’s Heath communities for the remarkable environment they have created for research,” said Dr. Morrison, who is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2018.

Dr. Sam McBrayer awarded grant from the V Foundation for cancer research D

r. Sam McBrayer, an Assistant Professor at CRI, received the V Foundation for Cancer Research’s V Scholar Grant to study glioma—a deadly type of cancer found in the brain. The grant supports young tenure-track faculty early in their cancer research careers Dr. McBrayer was also named the recipient of the 2020 Abeloff V Scholar Grant, which recognizes the individual who submitted the highest-rated V Scholar proposal this year.

Gliomas represent 80% of the 26,000 newly diagnosed cases of malignant brain and central nervous system tumors in the U.S. each year and are among the most lethal and treatment-resistant human cancers. The standard treatment for gliomas has not changed since 2005, and no new drugs have been approved for glioma

therapy in the last decade.

Dr. McBrayer hopes to change that with the support of the V Foundation.

“It is an honor to receive this award from the V Foundation and I look forward to contributing to their mission of achieving ‘Victory Over Cancer’. I’m deeply grateful for their support, which we hope will allow us to develop a desperately needed new therapy for brain cancer and improve the lives of patients suffering from this disease,” said Dr. McBrayer, who is also a Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas Scholar in cancer research.

In collaboration with Dr. Kalil Abdullah, assistant professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at UT Southwestern, the McBrayer lab is working to exploit a mutation, known as isocitrate

dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1), found in many glioma cells to stop cancer growth. So far, researchers have identified a specific metabolic pathway that IDH1 mutant glioma cells rely on to survive and tested a class of drugs that inhibits this metabolic pathway to preferentially kill brain tumor cells with IDH1 mutations.

Support from the V Foundation will help researchers take the next step to understand why brain tumor cells with IDH1 mutations rely on this specific metabolic pathway to survive and test if this drug class will inhibit brain tumors in mice. If successful, efforts by the McBrayer lab could lead to clinical studies to test whether these same drugs are effective against human brain tumors and help uncover new treatments for brain tumor patients.

These stories showcase the mission we pursue every day: to make life better for children.

And in a year like no other, the stories of why these patients choose Children’s Health were the stories that propelled us forward.

We introduced you to Abby, who found strength in her mental health journey with the help of our Suicide Prevention and Resilience at Children’s (SPARC) program. You met Jaxon and the nearly 20 team members who support his osteosarcoma journey. And you got to know Harrison and the hope he found with a new heart.

Our patients count on you to be there through their best and worst days.

And for many of them, the journey isn’t over yet.

Kids can do amazing things with a little help, and so can we. Your donations of time and money help us do what we do best.

Abby

bby has fiery red hair with bangs that skim her eyebrows and a spunky personality that greets you at the door.

She talks with her hands and doesn’t try to hide the freckles that sprinkle her nose and cheeks.

A self-proclaimed nerd, she loves to read—The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and Emma by Jane Austen are a couple of her favorites. And those who know her say she brings out the best in people, even when it’s difficult to do that for herself.

But while in middle school, online bullying coupled with family issues weighed heavily on her.

Worn out from fighting, she withdrew to her room. Feeling alone, she lashed out at family.

“I thought a solution would be ‘What if I wasn’t here anymore?’”

Abby said. “I thought that would make everything better.”

Abby was 12 years old when she made her first suicide attempt.

Her family brought her to the Children’s Health Day Treatment Program, where she attended counseling and group therapy sessions and was taught coping skills to handle big emotions.

She began to improve, but then she relapsed.

After her second attempt, she was enrolled in the SPARC program, joining other teens in learning to target and manage risk factors for suicidal behaviors.

In SPARC, Abby’s life started to change.

She met other teenagers grappling with similar difficulties.

She found healing in expressing her feelings through poetry.

And for the first time, she didn’t feel alone.

“I used to be so worried about what everyone thought of me,” Abby said. “Then I realized, why am I trying to change myself to fit other people’s ideals of me? I love myself the way I am.”

Live for You

I look up from the ground and take a deep breath I finally realized what I’ve found I don’t want to leave I’ve found happiness.

A

melia was 4 months old when her now adoptive mother, Robin, met her.

The baby wasn’t the first child for Robin and her husband, Henk, to adopt or foster, having already fostered 16 children and adopted two after the couple became an approved foster home in 2008.

But a note from Amelia’s birth mom worried Robin.

“It said that sometimes when Amelia ate, she stopped breathing,” Robin said.

Within 24 hours, Robin was on the phone with a nurse at the Rees-Jones Center for Foster Care Excellence at Children’s Health.

As Robin described Amelia’s respiratory and feeding issues, the nurse recognized that something was drastically wrong.

Robin soon received a call back from a physician at the Rees-Jones Center. She told Robin to bring Amelia to the emergency room (ER) as soon as she could.

Robin said the family didn’t know it at the time, but that intervention is what saved Amelia’s life.

“I’m at a loss for words to try and explain the gratitude that we feel for the care she got, which was only made possible because of donors who recognized that there was a need,” Robin said. “In this particular case, that need had a name. And she’s as beautiful as she is today—and she’s alive today—because somebody stepped up to support the foster care clinic.”

At the ER, Amelia tested positive for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Recognizing the importance of continuity of care, the Rees-Jones Center team recommended that Amelia be transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where she had spent her first 11 weeks of life.

The foster care team stayed in constant communication with the nearby NICU, advocating for Amelia.

That persistence made all the difference. The NICU was finally able to locate Amelia’s original medical records, which were under a different name, and discovered that she had a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)—an opening in her heart—and needed cardiac care.

Amelia underwent heart surgery, and 18 days later, she returned to Robin and Henk’s home.

by Robin and Henk’s side as Amelia continued to face setbacks. She was a poor feeder and began to miss key developmental milestones.

Suspecting a neurological issue, our clinical team ordered an MRI, and at 22 months old, Amelia was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

Now, Robin said the diagnosis does not define or limit Amelia, and that is largely due to the level of care and interventions provided by the Rees-Jones Center team and Children’s Health.

A

rya sat in a plastic chair before the class of wideeyed preschoolers. She wrapped her arms around the squishy teddy bear on her lap.

The yellow-haired bear looked like any other stuffed teddy— two eyes, brown nose and a thin-lipped smile—but with one exception.

“I see it’s a special teddy bear,” Arya’s teacher said to the class during show-and-tell. “What is so special about him?”

“He’s got a heart,” Arya replied, pointing to the red cloth pinned to the teddy’s chest. She squeezed the bear tight like the hug was their last and swung her legs.

Martha, Arya’s nurse, explained to the class that teddy, like Arya, has half a heart—medically known as hypoplastic left heart

Arya syndrome, meaning the left side of her heart can’t effectively pump blood to the rest of her body.

And like 4-year-old Arya, teddy needs his full heart to function.

“Her teddy bear has the full heart, the zipper and the stitches that she has,” Martha said. “Arya, besides teddy bear, who has a zipper, too?”

Arya pulled down the front couple buttons of her navy polo dress, exposing the scar in the middle of her chest—a permanent marker left behind after three surgeries to repair her congenital heart defect.

A year ago, she would have been embarrassed for a crowd of kids to stare at this mark that made her different. But this time, she just grinned.

She was proud.

After three surgical repairs, doctors no longer describe Arya’s condition as critical.

“I don’t just pray for my daughter to live a long life. I pray for her to have a good quality of life as she grows up,” Arya’s mom, Seher, said.

She is an outspoken advocate for the Heart Center clinical team at Children’s Health, saying they are an integral part of Arya’s journey.

She wants clinicians to continue to receive vital funding that supports their pursuit of research and treatment advancements that help them care for her daughter and other patients with congenital heart defects.

“Children’s Health understands that it’s not just important to keep your child well. It’s about keeping them well and moving forward with a good quality of life,” Seher said.

lli was theirs. Officially theirs.

Almost a year of waiting weighed on these minutes beneath fluorescent lights in a Dallas County courtroom in the fall of 2019.

With their right hands raised, Jennifer and Angie promised to protect this baby and care for this baby.

They promised to love her.

“Congratulations,” the judge said, as Jennifer, holding a wiggly Elli, then almost one-year-old, in a gold headband and lacy dress.

The three turned to face the courtroom for their first family photo.

The camera shutter snapped.

Click, click.

Elli was two days old when Jennifer and Angie met her in 2018. She weighed four pounds, five ounces and had a head of wispy dark hair.

As they peered over the isolette

in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), they saw past the crooked smile of Elli’s cleft lip and the congenital heart defect.

“She was beautiful to us despite her medical issues,” Angie said. “It was instant love.”

Elli was almost two months old when Jennifer and Angie took her home for the first time.

About a month later, they noticed signs of heart failure.

Elli was gaining weight slowly, had a heart rate of 160 and a high respiratory rate. But the biggest clue was the sweating when she ate.

After receiving numerous recommendations, the couple first came to Children’s Health for Elli’s heart catheterization—a minimally invasive diagnostic treatment that involves passing a catheter through

the vessels supplying blood to the heart to test her heart function.

Elli had a small ventricular septal defect—a hole in the wall separating the ventricles of her heart that doctors expect to eventually close.

But she also had an atrial septal defect—a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of her heart.

And for Elli, it meant practically her whole wall was missing.

The only option was open heart surgery at almost six months old.

And the procedure needed to happen quickly because Elli wasn’t gaining weight.

“There is a level of true care at Children’s Health,” Angie said. “The doctors, nurses and all the staff truly care about the patients, which is really comforting and makes it feel more like a family.”

G

abrielle climbed into her son’s hospital bed, stroking his curly blonde hair that she’d trimmed herself earlier that day.

She held him close as they began to drift to sleep, amid beeping monitors and dozens of stuffed dinosaurs (Harrison’s favorite!), including an oversized T-Rex tucked by his side.

“I’m so proud of you, Harrison,” she told her son, as his eyes fought to stay open.

“I’m proud of you, too, mommy,” he replied.

Gabrielle reached for her phone and typed a quick post to update friends and family.

“This boy melts me every day,” she wrote of her son who loves to wiggle his eyebrows up and down and roar like a dinosaur.

“I’d live in this hospital until the end of time to keep him if I had to.”

Because as she typed this, Harrison’s heart was failing.

When Harrison and Gabrielle left their home for an appointment at Children’s Medical Center Dallas several months earlier, Gabrielle packed an overnight bag.

She suspected her son was in heart failure and that they wouldn’t be coming home that night. And she braced herself for news she’d spent the last two years anticipating since Harrison received his cardiomyopathy diagnosis: He would need a new heart.

Harrison has been under the care of our team members since 2018, when Gabrielle and her husband, Bobby, relocated from their home in North Carolina to Dallas for Harrison to be treated at the Heart Center. They also were given the option to enroll Harrison in a research drug study.

In April 2020—one day after the two-year anniversary of Harrison’s cardiomyopathy diagnosis—Harrison was placed on the heart transplant list. Later that month, Gabrielle received the call

that Harrison’s new heart was here.

“We’ve never doubted for a second that we made the right decision coming to Children’s Health. We’re really comfortable here,” Gabrielle said.

Months since his heart transplant, Harrison continues to improve. When the weather is nice, he and his parents go to the park and on bike rides. A fellow Children’s Health patient, who received a heart transplant a couple months after Harrison, comes over to play once a week.

And Harrison still loves dinosaurs… and roaring like them! Gabrielle spends a lot of time reading him National Geographic books before bed, and he enjoys learning about invertebrate and different types of bacteria.

“This is such a difference from where we were a year ago,” Gabrielle said. “The transplant has improved his quality of life like you wouldn’t believe.”

2020 Faces of CHILDREN’S HEALTH

T

he pain in his right leg started as a limp Jaxon thought he could walk off.

He relied on this leg to push him through the finish line in track races, score soccer goals and lead him on explorations for insects.

When his mom brought him to Children’s Health shortly before Christmas Day 2019, she had to practically carry him into the hospital.

The second youngest of four boys, Jaxon was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer most often found in the long bones of your arms and legs. The cancer also

had spread to his left and right lungs.

“There was a lot of research and trying to figure out exactly what this was,” said Jaxon’s dad, Jason. “Where did it come from? Why Jaxon?”

Since Jaxon’s diagnosis, he’s undergone knee replacement and a couple of lung surgeries, along with months of chemotherapy treatments.

He’s also been cared for and looked after by dozens of team members at the Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Health.

“From the very beginning, I knew this is where we were

supposed to be,” Jaxon’s mom, Shay, said. “From day one, we have received the best care.”

At Children’s Health, Jaxon met a nurse who, as he was listening to Jaxon’s heartbeat, told him about how he also battled osteosarcoma as a kid. The story reminded Jaxon that he wasn’t alone and inspired him to keep fighting.

“We think we’re strong, but when you see these little, tiny creatures at the hospital pushing their IV poles down the hallway, it’s hard to see, but that’s strength,” Shay said. “That’s strength that I don’t have.”

Kepley T

hey couldn’t hold or see her immediately after she was born.

Arriving at 24 weeks and five days, Kepley James entered the world at 1 pound and 10 ounces. Still so small that you could see her lungs through the skin on her chest.

She was rushed to an isolette, where a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) team was waiting to intubate her. A tangle of tubes and cords covered her tiny face.

Her parents held their breath as a nurse in a mask and cap approached, a vision of only eyelashes and bangs.

“You have a beautiful baby girl,” she said as they wheeled Kepley to the NICU. It would be several hours before

Hollis and Court would see their baby for the first time and another eight days until one of them could hold her.

“I just kept thinking, ‘She has to make it,’” Hollis said. “We’d worked so hard for her. I just had a good feeling about it.”

Before she met Court, Hollis planned to have a baby on her own.

She’d already picked out the perfect name: Kepley, after the first woman in her family to graduate from college.

A 39-year-old cervical cancer survivor, Hollis knew her pregnancy would be high risk. She and Court planned for an early delivery, but they didn’t anticipate their baby would come so soon.

Kepley was born at a local hospital

and later transferred to a higher level NICU at Children’s Health.

About four months after she was born, Kepley was discharged from Children’s Health.

But Hollis and Court haven’t forgotten where Kepley’s story began, and the hospital and people who became close friends. This is what drives their giving to Children’s Health and support of the NICU and team that cared for their daughter during her first months of life.

“It’s like this triumph because Kepley can be outside, and she’s not on oxygen,” Court said. “We can get out and about with her, and that’s because of the work that was done at Children’s Health.”

Mitchell

itchell was six days old when he had a craniotomy to remove his brain tumor.

But intracranial bleeding weakened his mobility on his left side. Since he was four months old, he’s received physical therapy at Children’s Health to help him run, kick a soccer ball and jump rope with his friends.

“For day-to-day life, not having that left side work as efficiently as the right really presents some challenges,” his mom, Tonya, said.

For years, Mitchell wore leg braces. Walking was difficult, and he frequently fell.

his food also was a challenge. And it took years of dedicated practice to ride a bike without training wheels.

By elementary school, the falling had become worse. He would trip in the classroom, in the hallways, everywhere. He couldn’t keep up when he ran with his friends.

“His teachers were so sweet.

They would act like the rug was bent up or something,” Tonya said.

When he was seven years old, Mitchell had surgery to release the contractures in his leg muscles and give him more mobility.

But before the surgery, he was scared.

Would the procedure hurt? And

afterward, would he really be able to run?

“I said, ‘Buddy, if you do this surgery, you can run just like your friends,’” Tonya said. “And he said, ‘Just like my friends?’”

“I said, ‘You can run in a race.”

Now in high school, Mitchell runs on his school’s cross country team, running up to eight miles some days.

He pushes himself to keep going farther, keep going faster. And he continues to receive weekly therapy sessions at Children’s Health.

“Children’s Health is his second home,” Tonya said. “The physical and occupational therapists there are like family. They’ve just lived life with us.”

ecurity Officer Wendell Muhammad pressed his hand over his ear, focusing on the static radio call coming through his earpiece.

“Hold on for a minute,” he said, pausing his patrol down a hallway at Children’s Medical Center Dallas.

“I need to take this.”

Nearby, a woman in scrubs waited at a pair of elevators. Wendell smiled and waved.

“You on your way out?” he asked, as she nodded in reply.

“Be careful out there.”

A security officer at Children’s Health, Wendell has built a more than three-decade career dedicated to keeping team members and patients at the hospital safe.

I’ve always wanted to be a part of something bigger than who I am.

He’s the guy you’ll often see posted in the main lobby, smiling and waving to families and team members when they enter the hospital.

Sometimes, you’ll find him patrolling a hallway or circling the nooks and crannies of parking garages.

When Wendell came to Children’s Health in the late 1980s, it was a smaller community hospital. Since then, he’s watched it grow into a regional hospital, then a national hospital and now an international hospital that treats patients from around the world.

“One of the reasons I stayed for so long is because this place kept growing, and I wanted to be a part

of that,” Wendell said. “I’ve always wanted to be a part of something bigger than who I am.”

And as Children’s Health grew, there was more area to patrol and more people to keep safe. Over the years, security became more than just a job for Wendell.

“When I got trained years ago, the officer who trained me, after he was done, he said that he had given me what I needed to become a good security officer, but he told me something was missing,” Wendell

said. “He told me he couldn’t make me care, so I learned to allow myself to open up and think of this as more than just a job.”

That compassion is what propels Wendell when he races to meet a CareFlite and escort a patient family into the hospital. It’s what gives him the empathy to calm a psychiatry patient trying to find his mother.

When the virus that causes COVID-19 entered our world last year, Wendell missed being closer to patients as

social distancing and extra safety measures at the hospital were put in place.

Wendell isn’t providing direct patient care, but he also can’t perform his job patrolling the hallways and responding to calls from home.

He said during this uncertain time, it was important for him to provide an atmosphere where people felt safe—whether that’s a hello or a wave from afar and a smile with his eyes—with that same compassion and empathy.

Volunteer Catherine Seles leaves majority of estate to Children’s Health after a decade of service

C

atherine Seles slid her arms through the blue smock, flipping her dark brown hair out from underneath.

Almost a year had passed since the affable New Yorker with an infectious pep had last worn the volunteer uniform at Children’s Health—when in-person volunteering at the hospital paused because of COVID-19 safety precautions.

And she missed it.

“When do you think we get to go back?” she asked, turning to face the camera.

Donning the smock on this rainy January wasn’t for a volunteer shift—just a quick headshot.

Catherine is one of the many faces featured on the front and back cover of our 2020 annual report. The faces represent the donors, employees, patients and volunteers who stood by Children’s Health through an uncertain year.

When COVID-19 turned the world upside down, Catherine continued to support Children’s Health from afar, dropping off donations of toys and food.

But her biggest contribution was choosing to leave 70% of her and her husband’s estate to Children’s Health as part of a generous planned gift.

As she stood in front of the camera, Catherine held up a sign that in thick, black marker stated why she continues to choose Children’s Health: “TO GET MY KID FIX.”

atherine has spent her life looking out for people.

The daughter of two deaf parents as a kid in upstate New York, she was her parents’ window into a world they couldn’t hear.

A dental hygienist for almost four decades, she dedicated her career to caring for people’s teeth.

And for the last 11 years, she’s been a loyal volunteer at Children’s Health, playing games of Monopoly with kids to distract them from pokes and cracking jokes to make them smile.

“Most of the time, kids who are in the hospital don’t want to focus on why they’re in the hospital.

How our volunteers pivoted to helping from afar during COVID-19

t Children’s Health, volunteers add little touches that make families’ hospital visits special.

They greet them with big smiles and giant hugs.

They cart toys to patients’ rooms. They distract kids with games and songs, while their parents grab something hot to eat.

They help build a community of people who love Children’s Health.

With over 500 volunteers serving on a weekly basis, they’ve become a window into Children’s Health for the community, serving as advocates and references for friends and family.

From patient pals and playroom volunteers to serving in the longeststanding role—surgery services—volunteers show up and provide support in ways hospital staff cannot.

“We have dedicated, amazing volunteers,” said Julie Powell, Volunteer Services Specialist. “Their investment of time, passion and commitment to serve is completely unwavering.”

Then the unimaginable happened.

A pandemic shifted the norm across the world, causing Children’s Health to quickly rethink the way volunteers serve. As they began to pivot, virtual opportunities emerged— allowing volunteers to continue to serve and show their love and dedication from afar.

They gravitated toward these new opportunities.

Virtual story times—known as the Mystery Readers Segment—quickly became a fan favorite and received multiple submissions from volunteers.

“Our volunteers enjoyed this so much that they’d submit 10 videos at a time,” Julie said.

Over 100 story times were recorded and broadcast through the Red Balloon Network for patients to enjoy.

The hospital also pivoted its comfort cart to a nocontact service, which made an enormous impact.

Each day, volunteers called patient rooms to see if they needed socks, hairbrushes, shampoo and conditioner.

“When making phones calls, volunteers could access the language line to help families where there were language barriers,” said Susan Lakey, Director of Auxiliary Services.

“Because of this, volunteers were able to tap into the resources we offer that they haven’t used before.”

In just six months, volunteers reached over 3,800 patient rooms, providing close to 10,000 individual toiletry items to patients and their families.

Volunteers also dropped off boxes of non-perishable snacks and foods for patient families who couldn’t leave their rooms.

In-kind donations also included hand-made items such as masks, hats, blankets and pillows.

“Every day we are constantly picking up food from valet to make sure our food storage stays full,” Susan said. “Our social workers rely on that food, as well as our ICU families, for those long days.”

e gathered in February before COVID-19 took center stage in our lives at the Frontiers of Flight Museum for an inaugural Volunteer Appreciation event. More than 200 attendees joined in the fun and celebration of volunteers past and present for their dedication to Children’s Health. Volunteer stories and photos were shared throughout the evening, and formal speakers included longtime volunteer Lynn Drawbridge, who spoke about why she chooses Children’s Health for her time and treasure, and Brent Christopher, President of Children’s Medical Center Foundation.

Celebrating 10 Years of

Red Balloon Run & Ride Red Balloon Run & Ride hosted by Passion for Children’s has been an incredible source of funding for Children’s Health. Hundreds of teams were created by our amazing community to collectively raise more than $8.4 million dollars in support of areas across Children’s Health during the last 10 years.

For 2020, Red Balloon Run & Ride was reimagined as a virtual event to honor our commitment to the patients and caregivers at Children’s Health. About 1,800 participants and 125 teams across the country chose to wear red and “race” for a reason by running, walking and riding in their own neighborhoods. The community then came together online sharing photos and videos for a virtual celebration. More than $615,000 was raised and millions reached thanks to community support.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to shine a light on the need for support of pediatric cancer treatment and research. With support from its co-chairs like Donovan Lewis, this special initiative raised $63,000 and reached 24 million people through media coverage.

Programming included an auction in partnership with the Red Balloon Children Helping Children Tennis Tournament, as well as the inaugural Play Yellow golf campaign with the PGA Tour and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

BOO Yard Sign Challenge The BOO Yard Sign Challenge made October spooktacular for our patients as supporters took neighborhood trickery to a community fundraiser. The community rallied together to raise more than $60,000, doubling the amount from year’s past.

More than 70 volunteers—including Neighborhood Credit Union, RE/MAX offices and Liz and Honey—served as team captains, offering sign pick-up locations across North Texas.

2020 RECAP

In 2020, Children’s Health was named the first-ever featured nonprofit and beneficiary of the Reunion Tower Over the Top New Year’s Eve Celebration.

Giving Tuesday As a 24-hour, nationally recognized giving day, Giving Tuesday provided an opportunity for Children’s Health to spotlight pediatric mental health initiatives. The day also marked the launch of a $7.5 million challenge grant from Hamon Charitable Foundation to help support innovative initiatives and develop new solutions to address the mental health crisis.

The generous grant inspired more than 80 online donors to give on Dec. 1, totaling $35,000 to advance critical solutions for pediatric mental health..

Reunion Tower Over the Top NYE 2020 Children’s Health was named the beneficiary of the Reunion Tower Over the Top New Year’s Eve Celebration for 2020—the first-ever featured nonprofit. Televised across 14 states, the firework spectacular is one of the largest displays in the country and lights up the Dallas skyline every New Year’s Eve. The show allowed the community to celebrate with hope and joy—two values Children’s Health strives to bring to patients and families in our care. More than $135,000 was donated by the community and partners like Park Place Dealerships and McCarthy to support the children who light up our lives.

During North Texas Giving Day, we shared stories of how Dr. Pamela Okada, an Attending Physician at Children’s Health, and other Emergency Department doctors care for our patients’ most severe and life-threatening injuries.

North Texas Giving Tuesday Now In 2020, Communities Foundation of Texas brought an early verion of the global Giving Tuesday movement, #GivingTuesdayNow, to our community with North Texas Giving Tuesday Now. In response to the COVID-19 global pandemic, they partnered with United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and the Dallas Cowboys to serve the North Texas community during its time of need.

This 18-hour, national giving day gave North Texas nonprofits the ability to raise awareness and funds for their organization in response to their efforts to combat COVID-19 and serve the community.

Thanks to our generous donors across North Texas and a $15,000 matching gift from Capitol One, we raised over $90,000 from 275 donors.

North Texas Giving Day The biggest of them all, North Texas Giving Day is an 18-hour community-wide giving day where nonprofits across North Texas raise awareness and funds for their organizations.

Our campaign featured a virtual engagement celebration—where we shared our patient and caregiver stories, educated the North Texas community about the mission of Children’s Health, heard from our friends and supporters at Panda Express and celebrated various fundraising milestones throughout the day.

With the support of our generous donors and a $250,000 matching gift from Panda Express, Children’s Health came in No. 2 on the Leaderboard and raised more than $1.16 million from over 1,000 donors.

Fundraising Spotlight: Spirit of Halloween A long supporter of Children’s Health, Spirit of Halloween had another record-breaking fundraising year in 2020. Through in-store efforts and their Spirit of Children coupons, Spirit Halloween was able to raise almost $219,000 for Children’s Health, adding to its lifetime giving of over $1 million and making this the company’s highest fundraising year to date.

Passionate about making hospitals less scary for kids, Spirit Halloween enthusiastically asks customers for donations at the register in support of our Child Life department, as well as distributes “10 for 10” coupons, allowing customers a 10% discount while simultaneously donating 10% of their purchase price to Children’s Health.

But their commitment doesn’t stop there. Each year, they host an in-hospital Halloween party for our patients at Children’s Medical Center Dallas.

Last year, they pivoted this in-person celebration to sending costumes to the hospital for our mobile costume cart and goodies for a reverse trick-or-treat in patient rooms. Some associates even participated in a virtual pumpkin decorating contest that was streamed on the Red Balloon Network and judged by our patients—the Poppy pumpkin was a crowd favorite.

Three of the highest fundraising stores also offered virtual tours of their stores for our patients that were unable to visit them in-person.

Children’s Miracle Network Panda Express In 2020, Panda Express continued to grow and strengthen its partnership with Children’s Health.

Before COVID-19 had reached the United States, they were able to facilitate a special Lunar New Year event for patients and families at Our Children’s House. At this event, they talked about Lunar New Year and provided food to patient families and staff.

As COVID-19 started to impact us locally, nearby Panda Express locations delivered meals to team members at Children’s Health, totaling over 400 meals donated.

In September, our partnership with Panda Express was highlighted on North Texas Giving Day when they helped motivate others to give to Children’s Health by providing $250,000 in matching funds, resulting in more than $1.16 million raised on the community-wide giving day.

Though there where many changes last year, Panda Express saw significant fundraising success through point-of-sale register asks and employee giving, raising more than $510,000 in support of Children’s Health.

or almost 30 years, Children’s Health has been a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, operating as the local beneficiary for 40 national fundraising partners in North Texas. In 2020, these partners raised more than $2.8 million through point-of-sale and other fundraising campaigns, bringing lifetime giving to about $32 million.

Extra Life In 2020, Extra Life had its highest fundraising year to date, raising over $120,000.

This would not have been possible without the work of over 600 gamers in North Texas raising money for Children’s Health.

For the second year, local pro esports team Complexity Gaming supported Children’s Health through Extra Life, raising nearly $17,000.

Students at Leadership Prep School in Frisco raised over $4,000 during their virtual day of gaming. The school did an incredible job of rallying their students together during a time when students could have felt isolated due to COVID-19.

Though many of our gamers had major changes in their lives last year, they chose to continue fundraising and found other ways to support Children’s Health. For DFW Gaming Village, this meant more than just raising money.

After hearing our Child Life team needed board games, they purchased the items so our patients had something to do when they couldn’t leave their rooms. Also, Extra Life gamers Tyler Haase and Zander Price utilized their 3D printers to make mask straps (or “ear savers”) for our team members working in the hospital. For our frontline workers, these straps offered a small comfort by relieving ear pressure caused by masks.

Hispanic Radiothon In December, six Children’s Health patients shared their stories with local radio host Chiquillin on La Grande 107.5 as part of a joint radiothon with Cook Children’s.

During the event, our patient Camila and her mom went live on the station’s Instagram page to share her osteosarcoma treatment journey at Children’s Health with Piolin, a radio host based in Los Angeles with a popular following in the Hispanic community.

“My favorite part about participating in the radiothon was speaking with the radio host about my personal experience at the hospital,” Camila said. “I let them know how important it is to support the hospital to help kids like me.”

With the support of over 1,000 generous donors, the event raised more than $241,000 for Children’s Health.

The Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center Members of the Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center raised more than $807,000 in 2020, totaling their support to more than $23 million in fundraising dollars for Children’s Health throughout their 58 years.

T

he nearly 850 members of the Women’s Auxiliary raise funds and serve as advocates and volunteers at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and Plano campuses.

Funds raised by the Women’s Auxiliary support lifesaving medical equipment and critical program areas, including Family Support Services, research and intensive care.

The Auxiliary’s heartfelt support was particularly evident in 2020 as members rose up to support our patients and team members. The Auxiliary found creative and innovative ways to continue their important patient and staff support programs within the halls of Children’s Health.

The Auxiliary hung and decorated nearly 400 holiday wreaths and trees at the Dallas and Plano campuses, provided 250 holiday gift wrap kits to our Plano staff, delivered hundreds of meals to patient families and team members and gave treat baskets to nearly 1,300 Dallas employees.

Because of COVID-19 safety regulations, the Auxiliary also reimagined their signature fundraisers that have become annual traditions in the community to virtual and socially distant events.

The Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center Dallas partnered with NorthPark Center to bring the community A Season of Giving. The initiative allowed the community to safely experience the magic and joy of the season, while at the same time, raising more than $130,000 in critical funding for Children’s Health.

NorthPark’s renowned Santa has been a special tradition in North Texas for more than 30 years. Thanks to the generosity and creativity of NorthPark, this year was no different.

More than 1,100 families and 700 patients were able to meet Santa virtually and safely whisper their Christmas wishes through their screen.

The Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center Plano celebrated

the holiday season by hosting its signature event, Santa’s Workshop.

Evolving from an inside affair, a drive-thru winter wonderland awaited supporters this year.

Participants picked up festive activities, a boxed breakfast and were able to wave to Santa from the car. Over 200 guests drove through Santa’s Workshop, which raised $32,013—more than ever before.

The Women’s Auxiliary was established in 1962 by combining auxiliaries from the precursors of the modern-day Children’s Medical Center; Bradford Memorial Hospital for Babies; Children’s Hospital of Texas and Richard Freeman Memorial Clinic.

In the early years, members assisted staff in admitting patients, delivered samples to the lab and founded and operated the Women's Auxiliary Children’s Corner Gift Shop—still a favorite stop for patient families and team members. For membership information, visit childrensauxiliary.org.

Children’s Medical Center Foundation welcomes new board members appointed in 2020.

SALLY DUTTER Sally Dutter is committed to serving the community in service to causes closest to her heart. She was first introduced to Children’s Health in 1993 as a Junior League volunteer.

Fifteen years later, she found herself back at Children’s Health when her daughter needed heart surgery. Since then, Sally has been a dedicated member of the Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center Dallas, serving as president of the Dallas Chapter and chairing many signature fundraising events and projects. Sally currently serves as a deacon at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, has been a faithful volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 27 years and is a past president of the Episcopal School of Dallas Parents Association. She also serves as a member of the Junior League of Dallas, Community Partners of Dallas Board and Genesis Women’s Shelter Auxiliary.

Sally was an engineer at Texas Instruments and Hewlett Packard for many years after receiving a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas. Raised in Sherman, Texas, Sally is married to George Dutter and they have two daughters.

MATTHEW NUNLEY Matthew “Matt” Nunley grew up in Dallas as a part of a family committed to serving others, including supporting the Children’s Health mission of making life better for children. Matt is excited to join the Children’s Medical Center Foundation Board and continue the tradition of giving back, especially to an organization providing the best possible care to children. Matt is chief revenue officer for Greenlight Distribution. He previously held positions in finance, banking and real estate, since moving back home to Dallas after graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 2010. In 2015, Matt received his MBA from the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University.

Matt and his wife, Cecily, have one daughter, Lily Anne, who is currently attending the German International School of Dallas.

The One Society

I

n 2020, members of The One Society raised $3,000 for their beneficiary—School-Based Telebehavioral Health.

Since 2017, the program has been increasing access to mental and behavioral health to North Texas students— a critical need particularly last year. School-Based Telebehavioral Health provides virtual access to licensed behavioral professionals for students to identify and resolve common behavioral health issues, such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues and lack of coping skills.

ike many organizations last year, The One Society reimagined how it engaged with members and Children’s Health patients, shifting from in-person to virtual events as

it celebrated its 10th anniversary as a young professional organization in Dallas.

ndation Board Members BRAD RAMSEY Brad Ramsey is president and general manager of WFAA and senior vice president of WFAA’s parent company TEGNA, Inc. At WFAA, he oversees day-to-day operation of the Dallas-Fort Worth ABC television affiliate, which serves more than 7 million people across 32 North Texas counties. In total, Brad is responsible for 1,300 TEGNA employees as they work to fulfill their mission of “serving the greater good” to 13 markets across Texas and Arkansas.

TEGNA’s media outlets reach an unparalleled 87% of homes in Texas and serve 23 million people monthly across Texas and Arkansas. Brad is a member of the boards of directors of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic and Dallas Summer Musicals. He also was an inaugural member of Nielsen Media Measurement’s “Anytime/Anywhere” Advisory Board. He received both his bachelor’s degree in communications and his MBA from Virginia Tech, where he is a past member of the MBA Advisory Board. Brad lives in Dallas with his wife, Chris, and sons, Alex and Brady, who attend St. Rita Catholic School.

MIGUEL SOLIS Since 2009, Miguel Solis has served the residents of Dallas in the areas of education, housing and transportation. Miguel began his professional career in Dallas as a teacher and later, special assistant to the superintendent in the Dallas Independent School District. He also co-founded the nonprofit Latino Center for Leadership Development and currently runs the urban policy think tank Coalition for a New Dallas. In 2013, Miguel was elected to the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees at the age of 27. During his tenure, he served as the board president and vice-president, making him the youngest person ever to hold these positions. Miguel is a graduate of Lamar University and Harvard University. He and his wife, Dr. Jacqueline Nortman, are the proud parents of Olivia Solis, a Children’s Health heart transplant recipient. Miguel and Jacqueline are also the authors of Olivia’s New Heart, a book used to demystify the organ transplant process in a child-friendly way.
