Human beings are learners.

Throughout our lives, we’re forever learning. As time passes, we learn more complex processes, we reckon with progressively denser ideas, we solve bigger puzzles…. We are well adept at learning how to overcome obstacles and how to improve our lives. Though we’re great at overcoming things, there is one thing that, individually, we can hardly ever completely overcome. That thing is childhood – particularly the first few years of our lives.

Decades of research shows that the environment of a child’s earliest years has effects that last a lifetime. Not only does a child’s early environment affect

physical health and learning capacity in school, it completely shapes the child’s emotional framework – all of which impact lifelong wellbeing.

So, as much as we’d like to overcome our emotional weaknesses, we often can’t.

As adults, we’re left with the emotional framework we were given in childhood. Our ability to trust others, to be close to others, to love others, and to even love ourselves is, in large part, fixed in childhood.

A loving, nurturing childhood environment will almost certainly breed a healthier adult than an environment where caretakers, either uniformed or weighed down by the stresses of life, fail to nurture development.

With children spending so much time in childcare centers, it is clearly important for educators to know how to best nurture

Knowing that, Vanessa Gilliam called upon the Children & Family Resource Center when she first opened a child care facility. Vanessa is the owner of, and a proud early childhood educator at, Nessa’s Young’uns – a five-star rated center in Hendersonville.

“CFRC is my rock and strength to continue with the job I cherish and deem so important in our community,” Vanessa added.

From the inception of Nessa’s Young’uns, CFRC has helped Vanessa ensure she’s doing what is necessary to give her clients the best care. “I could not maintain my quality child care without the resources and collaboration I have with CFRC,” said Vanessa.

CFRC’s Childcare Resource & Referral Program (CCR&R) helps facilities like Nessa’s Young’uns maintain or improve their childcare quality by providing

Racey Jones the journey of

It is often hard for a man to know the precise moment he stepped out of the comfort of childhood and into the generally scruffier realm of manhood.

That, however, is not always the case.

Sitting in a Chick-Fil-A parking lot on a fall night, a boy named Racey received a text message, and became a man. The message from his girlfriend read, “I’m pregnant.”

Racey was scared. More than that though, he was excited. He was excited by the opportunity to give his future

son something he didn’t have – a relationship with his father.

Still, excitement does not serve as a substitute for knowledge, and fatherhood is a long journey one should prepare for. Racey, never having been a father before, and being only 16 years old, was not sure how to best be the man his son deserved. He knew that it wasn’t easy being a teenager, and knew that being a new father certainly wouldn’t make things any easier. So, when his girlfriend Kayla mentioned she would like to enroll in Children & Family Resource Center’s Adolescent Parenting Program, he knew he wanted to do the same.

The Adolescent Parenting Program (APP) gives teen parents, like Racey, the

resources and support needed to complete high school and become productive members of society. With help from those resources and that support, Racey graduated in December. Not only did he graduate, a feat in and of itself considering half of all teen parents fail to graduate from high school, Racey completed the APP curriculum with necessary skills and knowledge that will allow him to tread strongly on his journey to be what he has always wanted to be – a better father.

Children & Family Resource Center serves all types of parents and children at various stages of their personal journeys. Some, like Racey, are beginning a new journey

and need our help for a strong start. Others – like the many children we are helping overcome developmental delays – are somewhere in the middle. Some are celebrating the end of a journey as they use one of our scholarships to complete a degree. At every stage of every journey, it’s your support that allows us to provide the education and support to help parents improve the lives of their children.

Mary Vargas the journey of

A teenager was with child, and without her parents. At just 15 years old, Mary Vargas was entering parenthood – at the same time she was emancipated from her parents.

Knowing she would need support from someone or something, she enrolled in the Adolescent Parenting Program at the Children & Family Resource Center.

That was 13 years ago. With the enduring support of the Children & Family Resource Center, Mary has set out

on the path of success. She studied, she procured a good job, and she is still furthering her education. Now, she wants to be sure her 11-year-old daughter, Celeste, also finds success…yet from a better, smoother starting point.

Daughters of teen mothers are 22% more likely to become teen mothers themselves.

Mary knows this, and she intends to keep her daughter from making the same mistakes she did. She recently completed one of the CFRC’s newest programs – Parents Matter!. Parents Matter! is a free five-week long program that empowers parents by teaching them how to talk to their children about puberty, sex and making good decisions.

“I could never talk to my mom about [sex], and friends didn’t give the most accurate advice,” said Mary. So, in an attempt to keep her daughter from also becoming a teen mother, Mary intends to give Celeste an open line of communication about the subject.

Parents Matter! made it easier for Mary to start that sure to be ongoing conversation with Celeste. They now talk about sexual health openly and regularly. Mary also has a little sister the same age as her daughter, and has begun educating her as well. In addition to educating Celeste about the natural significance and potential consequences of sex, Mary says that her completion of Parents Matter! has left Celeste more willing

to talk not just about sexual health, but about everything.

“Now, I even know which of her friends have boyfriends, and who’s going out with who,” Mary said.

Teens consistently report that parents are their biggest influence when it comes to decisions about sex, drug use or other risky behaviors.

Having open, healthy lines of communication between parents and children is essential.

Mary Vargas wants to break that cycle.

New initiatives this year: Circle of Parents Circle of Parents is a weekly parent-led and professionally facilitated support group for parents. While parents are meeting, children are also involved in their own group and both parents and children will build their leadership skills, develop a network of support, and develop new skills that will help the family communicate and cooperate more successfully.

This program is evidence-based, and is recognized as a bestpractice in preventing child abuse and neglect.

Community

Response Program Community Response Program is a collaboration between CFRC and the Henderson County Department of Social Services.

We are working one-on-one with families (focused on children 0 to 5) on a weekly basis to provide strength-based case management services and parenting education to help build protective factors that lead to enhanced family functioning and better developmental outcomes for children.

Once Upon a Time Once Upon a Time program has expanded this year with a grant from the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Ribbon of Hope Foundation. This program has paired volunteers with local preschool classrooms to build early literacy skills in children while modeling new and interactive ways for teachers to read to children.

We are also providing early literacy skill development training and on-site coaching for child care/ preschool teachers.
