Why Play
This session will discuss the history of the Adventure Playground movement from inception to their current status. Playwork, and its development alongside this movement will be discussed as well as the evolutionary function and many benefits, educational, developmental and psychological, play has for children when offered with affordance. Why Play is designed to demonstrate philosophically, theoretically and practically why intrinsically motivated play is critical to the development of successful humans where ever they may be.
Play is often at best seen as a bit of fun for children, and at worst something that happens around the important stuff.
Angus Gorrie
As a playworker and play advocate, Angus Gorrie is passionate about providing authentic play opportunities for children, wherever they may be.
Working in a large OSHC Adventure Playground, Angus has qualifications in Behavioural Sciences and Psychology, Playwork and is currently working towards a Masters of Medical Research investigating how play (in the broadest sense) supports the mental health of children.

06 1. “A child loves his play, not because it is easy but because it is hard...” -Dr Benjimen Spock 2. In play, children work at the edge of their capabilities. 3. Play is evolutions’ gambit to create intrinsic motivation to do really difficult things! 4. “The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct.” – Carl Jung 5. “Children learn as they play. More importantly, in play, children learn how to learn.” – O. Fred Donaldson 5 Fast Facts About Play
