LITTLE LIGHTS 晓
2021 is a year of celebration and reflection for the Catholic fraternity and the IJ community. This year, we joyfully commemorate Catholic200SG (the 200th anniversary of the Catholic Church in Singapore) and the 400th anniversary of the birth of our Founder Blessed Nicolas Barré.
In the Gospels, Jesus repeatedly invited the people with two simple words “Follow me”. With these two words, he has touched and transformed so many lives. What does it mean to follow Christ? Simply put, it is to place our faith in the providence of the Lord and to remain faithful to God’s call to
uplift and touch the lives of those around us.
Almost 400 years ago, Blessed Nicolas Barré answered God’s call to help the poor and disadvantaged and started the first free “little schools” for girls in poverty. 200 years ago, St Laurent Imbert landed in Singapore, marking the beginning of the Catholic Church on our little island. From then, missionaries continued to come to Singapore to plant and grow the seeds of faith, and, working alongside the people of Singapore, contributed to the growth and modernisation of our country.
The Catholic Church views education as a universal human right and has set up many schools to provide a rich, holistic and distinctive education to

develop the young into persons of character and value. In CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School, we continue to build a Christcentred school community, where our children are loved unconditionally and are guided to develop and use their gifts generously to help others. Inspired by the pioneering spirit, courage and faith of those who came before us, we will do our best to walk in the footsteps of Christ, to develop our children to be “Girls of Grace, Women of Strength and Leaders with Heart”, leading lives of love and service.

Principal’s Message

P6 Asian Civilisations Museum Learning Journey
On 2 February 2021, my Social Studies teacher took my class to the Singapore Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM).
Before embarking on this trip, I was not too excited because I felt that the Southeast Asian culture and heritage were not as exciting as other foreign cultures. However, I quickly realised
that the Southeast Asian culture is unique and rich!
At the ACM, we saw many interesting artefacts, such as vases and bowls from China that were discovered from the Tang shipwreck. It was believed to have taken place off the coast of Belitung Island, Indonesia 1,100 years ago! The education guides also
introduced us to special houses and some long-standing traditions that can only be found here in Southeast Asia. This trip has certainly changed my perspective of Southeast Asian culture and I have learned the importance of embracing our multicultural heritage.

SNGS RECYCLING CAMPAIGN
In 2021, St Nicks embarked on the SNGS Recycling Campaign in which pupils are engaged in a series of homebased activities to do their part to recycle.
Over a ten-week period from Term 1 to Term 2, pupils set up recycling corners in their homes to collect recyclables like paper, plastic or aluminium cans. This provided them with an opportunity to recycle things together as a family. Thereafter, they placed the recyclables in the neighbourhood recycling bins. By taking part in the recycling campaign activities, the pupils put into practice how they can Bin Less, Recycle More.
The pupils are also encouraged to Refuse and Reduce the use of plastic containers in school. Many pupils took up the challenge and brought along their own reusable containers to school when packing food back to their classrooms for lunch.
Some pupils even took the initiative to make attractive upcycled items from the recyclables they had collected and displayed amazing creativity in their upcycled items. Let’s do our part for the environment and make recycling our lifestyle in St Nicks!

Primary 1: Basic Sewing
Forty Primary 1 pupils participated in a basic sewing workshop that was held on 1, 8 and 22 February. The activity took place in the Art Rooms on Monday afternoons after school.
The objective of the workshop was to allow pupils to acquire basic sewing techniques like tying a knot on a thread, inserting the thread through the needle hole and sewing diagonally and horizontally. Over
these sessions, the pupils made two bracelets using stitching and braiding techniques, a stuffed keychain with cotton filling or aromatic fragrance, and a sewn handbag.
We hope that the workshop has equipped the pupils with the skills they need to help with simple sewing tasks at home.

Hold On To Our Dream
