The foundation degree created a supportive and nurturing environment which encouraged us to ask questions, to think critically and to problem solve.
We were treated as respected students where our opinions were valued and discussion was student led and always tailored towards how we could be better inside and outside of our studies. The foundation degree is more than just making you a better student, It also makes you a better more rounded person.
The work based learning was so helpful. I received full support from the staff
and actually had boxing equipment bought for myself and TWO other students so that we could run non-contact boxing sessions within the college. This was such a great experience and gave me the confidence and the inspiration to go on to set up my own amateur boxing club in Worthing.

The biggest positive impact of the Foundation Degree at Worthing College was studying Sports Psychology. This module helped me develop a deeper understanding of the mental aspects of performance, and made me realise that this is a field I would like to work in. Being able to apply theory to practical scenarios increased my confidence in the subject and confirmed my interest in pursuing a career within sports psychology.
Being able to transfer my skills from the classroom into real industry experience helped me develop confidence in both my skills and knowledge. The work-based learning element allowed me to receive constructive feedback, adapt to different situations, and further develop my problem-
solving skills. It also gave me the opportunity to speak with professionals already working in the industry, helping me gain a deeper understanding of their roles and possible career pathways.
The lecturers at Worthing College were extremely enthusiastic and supportive throughout my time on the course. The people around me also played a key role in supporting me as an athlete, making it possible for me to balance my training alongside my studies. The range of modules allowed me to explore different areas of sport science, helping me identify the topics I enjoyed most and develop a genuine passion for the subject. This supportive environment made Worthing College the right place for my personal development and future progression.

Sport, Health & Exercise Sciences
Across two focused years, you will develop a strong scientific foundation in biomechanics, physiology and sport psychology, alongside health promotion and independent research skills. Learning is rooted in real-world application, ensuring you graduate with the confidence to translate theory into professional practice and progress to a specialist top-up degree.
Year one introduces core disciplines through a blend of lectures, seminars and regular practical sessions, supported by Work Based Learning. In year two, your learning continues through workshops and laboratory-based teaching, exploring lifestyle and current industry demands.
Small group teaching ensures personalised feedback, regular progress reviews and strong academic support throughout the course. You will also complete a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification as part of your studies, providing early industry recognition.
This Foundation Degree provides a strong platform for both employment and further study. Graduates typically progress into roles within the health, fitness, sport, and physical activity sectors, including positions such as fitness instructor, personal trainer, exercise referral assistant, health promotion practitioner, sports coach, activity co-ordinator, and support roles within public health, community sport, leisure centres, schools, and wellbeing services.
A key strength of the programme is the inclusion of substantial work-based learning modules. These placements enable students to gain real-world industry experience alongside their academic studies, helping them explore different roles, identify what they enjoy, and understand areas that may not suit them. This practical experience allows graduates to stand out from those with qualifications alone, giving them greater confidence, employability, and a clearer sense of career direction on completion of the degree.
Graduation
At Worthing College, graduation is a memorable milestone for every student.
Each year, graduates gather at Chichester Cathedral, a historic and iconic venue in the heart of the city. The ceremony offers a meaningful moment to reflect on the hard work, commitment, and academic achievements attained throughout their studies.
Receiving their certificate on stage in such a prestigious setting marks a significant transition from education to the next stage of each student’s journey. In particular, every ceremony contains hundreds of individual stories, with students following their own paths to graduation. Each of these students will have been shaped by different experiences, responsibilities, and challenges.
This day is about recognising every one of these students, as they celebrate their accomplishments surrounded by family, friends and tutors, and look ahead to the opportunities awaiting them in their chosen industries.

The smaller classroombased learning environment meant I could receive more one-to-one support from the lecturers when I needed it.
Over the two years, I was able to build strong relationships with the teaching staff, which made a huge difference to my confidence and overall enjoyment of the Foundation Degree. The opportunity to gain my Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification during the course also allowed me to secure part-time work within the gym industry alongside my studies.
The work-based learning element helped me build key professional skills such as communication, teamwork and time management. It has undoubtedly played a big role in helping me secure the job I have now within the community. It also gave me clear guidance and a better understanding of what I wanted my future career to look like.
I’m extremely grateful that the Foundation Degree pushed me outside of my comfort zone and gave me the opportunity to complete over 200 hours of work-based learning.
The Foundation Degree was the perfect option for me, as it allowed me to build my confidence in a familiar and supportive environment. The location was also a big factor, as being close to home made it more suitable for me compared to moving away for university. The teaching staff on the course deserve huge credit, as I wouldn’t have gone on to complete a third year and achieve my Bachelor of Science degree with honours without their support, encouragement and guidance during my first two years at Worthing College.

Enjoying our new look?
We’ve chosen Inconstant Regular by Daniel Brokstad as the new typeface for this year’s university-level course guide. It was selected not only for its distinctive, contemporary look, but because it represents something meaningful: accessibility and inclusivity.
Inconstant is designed with an irregular set of letterforms to help people with dyslexia read more easily. As a college group that places opportunity for everyone at its core, Inconstant Regular felt like the right choice. It supports accessibility while reflecting the uniqueness of our campuses and the diversity of the people within them.
Commissioned by Dyslexia Scotland for their awareness campaign, There’s Nothing Comic About Dyslexia, designer, Daniel, talks through the challenges of beginning the project, researching and learning what makes a typeface legible for people with dyslexia.
A huge range of glyphs and concept entry points were sketched out on how to solve this. Eventually landing on the concept of inconsistently inconsistent, by adding in the different stylistic sets and contextual alternatives.
