Blizzard By: Bryant What is a Blizzard? A blizzard is winter storm with snow and high winds. Blizzard can reach at least 35 mph and lasts for a long period of time usually for three hours or longer. A blizzard has the following two characteristics. For example, it has a large amount of snow and blowing snow. There is also another kind of blizzard called ground blizzard where snow is not dropping from the sky but the loose snow on the ground.
Why does Blizzard happen? Blizzard happens when cold air from the polar regions is pulled to the equator, and warm air is brought toward the poles from the equator. When warm and moist air meets with the cold and dry air, then a front is formed and during the process, the precipitation will happen. As warm air rises up to the mountainside, because of the sudden drop of the temperature, blizzard snow occurs too.
What damage does a Blizzard cause? Did you ever think that snow could cause a lot of damage? Well, actually a blizzard occurs in very strong winds, and depending on the blizzard’s strength or the amount of snow, there could be a lot of different types of damage. Below is a list of different types of damage a blizzard can cause. 1. Frozen pipes break 2. Ice runs down from the roof 3. Roof runoff soaks the house 4. Snow causes roof collapse 5. Tree branches break and fall 6. Gutters and downspouts split
