PURPLE LEGIONNAIRE REPORT

CHRIS HUPE '94

Brothers, it seems the Spring semester just started and here we sit, Spring Break complete, and it is already about to conclude. We are on a tear to the end of the semester with our first officer elections under our new school year term structure and on the horizon, we have Pig Dinner, Formal, Fiji Island Philanthropy, International Reporting, and a full slate of academics, intramurals and greek life. The race to the finish line is on!

Academy Wrap Up. Thanks in part to scholarships provided by your membership in the Excellence Club, Chi Deuteron had 13 undergraduate brothers at the academy, accompanied by four proud Alumni. The Kansas State Delegation, 17 strong, was prideful to receive multiple national recognitions and awards on behalf of the chapter. This is the culmination of efforts which began in the Fall of 2019 and something in which everyone can celebrate as the chapter persevered through significant enrollment decline, university change and years of covid impacts. On our return from St. Louis, the attending brothers participated in a post academy wrap up session where we discussed and leveraged their learnings to set our course for the year ahead. The Condon Cup will be present at this year’s Pig Dinner!

Speaking of Pig Dinner...based on feedback from last year, the committee has removed the undergraduate awards and scholarships from the Pig Dinner programming. As the undergraduates have continued to excel scholastically the past four years, the number of scholarships and undergraduate recongitions have grown to the point where we were rushing the process, and they still took a significant portion of the Pig Dinner program. The solution was to form a separate Spring awards and recognition event for the chapter, one where parents and siblings are invited to celebrate successes with the chapter, and in the process, see first-hand the significant scholarships given by the Kincaid Foundation, and our focus on values, scholastic performance and leadership.

Withtime, webelieve this willdevelop intoakeystoneeventforFIJI at KSU and further exemplify the value wedeliver to ourmembers, solidifying relationshipswithparents andenhancingrecruitmentas well. For Pig Dinner attendees, this willgreatlystreamlinethedinner program, and we hopeyou enjoythechange thisyear. Awardees will still befeatured on the rolling slideshow atthedinner soour alumni can still see all the achievements of our undergraduatebrothers.

OntoRecruiting...In thePhi Gamma Delta magazine and overthe past twoyears, we have heard muchabout the“newmodel”which eliminated “pledging” inPhi Gamma Delta. Another, perhaps less known pieceof thenew model, isthe“growthsystem”which focuses on how we recruit. It seeks to modernize theprocessofattracting and selectingqualitymen using a continuous, values-based approach. The program puts membersthroughcertifiedrecruitertraining developedby PhiredUpFraternal, along withseveralworkshops throughout theyear, andis anchored byanadvanced web-based recruiting CMScalled chapter builder. Our process iscontinually improvingand utilizing thetools availableto us, and indoingso,we have become muchbetter at identifying andvettingpotential new members. Today, thechapterhas developed and implementedafivestarrating approach ofpotentials, similartowhatishappeninginthe sportsworld of recruitinghighschool athletes. Theseratings, which focus onkeyskill sets and character traits, are strictly internal and usedto facilitate thoughtful chapter discussions prior tovotingto extend a bid. I can honestly say, thevetting process ingettingtoknow potential new members, along withthedepthandquality of discussionpriortoextending abid, has neverbeenbetter during my yearsadvising the chapter.

I sign offby sayingTHANKYOU to ourHouse Corporation volunteers, BCA volunteers, Excellence Club members and all alumnigiving time, treasure or talent...you are all awesome andyour generosity continues to make a positive difference for ouryoung men at KSU. I lookforwardtoreconnecting with many ofyouatPigDinnerApril 26 & 27. I am mighty proud to be aFIJI...

RECRUITMENT UPDATE

BILL GILTNER '89 MITCH KEATING‘13

Recruitment Initiatives are well underway at Chi Deuteron for the Fall 2024 Class As of this update, there are eleven outstanding young men signed to the Fall class. We are closing in on our goal, as our target is 18-20 solid men. Recruitment is now a year round effort and involves the entire Chapter.

The vast majority of the Undergraduate Chapter was trained earlier this semester as Certified Recruiters and have also completed a Recruitment Retreat. These tools equip each brother to provide complete assistance in identifying young men that will add value to Chi Deuteron. Referrals from Graduates and parents continue to be extremely helpful. We target potential referrals that are leaders with at least a 3 4 GPA in high school

If you are aware of any candidates, please send to rushksufiji@gmail com for review and consideration Please include the candidate’s name, hometown, cell number, GPA and additional information you feel would be helpful Your help is greatly appreciated and will ensure we have quality young men in place to take our Chapter to even greater heights!

Our Undergraduate Recruitment Team consists of:

Logan Latto

Jackson Vanlerberg

Cuyler Kietzmann

Ben Abraham Kaden Sims

This talented Recruitment Team has planned and implemented a number of Recruitment events including: Bowling, Paintball, Casino Night, Football and Basketball Watch Parties, Axe Throwing as well as a number of dinners with candidates

The entire Chapter is rallied around our Recruiting efforts and are resolved to bring in a stellar class in Fall 2024. Thank you to all Brothers thus far for your efforts, and let’s continue to persist to reach our goal!

FIJI MOTHER‘S WEEKEND

From March 2nd thru the 4th, the Brothers of Chi Deuteron welcomed their Moms to Manhattan for their Annual Mother’s Weekend. On Friday, each pledge class went out to dinner across Manhattan with their moms. After dinner, everyone met up back at the Chapter House, and from there traveled to Wamego for some karaoke. The Moms outshone their sons with their singing abilities and a great time was had by all

On Saturday, Moms and Sons attended a nice dinner and live auction at the Manhattan Country Club. In keeping with tradition, the Moms raised more money than the Dads by raising over $20,000! The auction had some great items including custom corn hole boards, furniture, coolers and a signed Avery Johnson jersey The weekend was a special time for the FIJI Brothers to spend time with our Moms, and we’re already looking forward to another fun Mom’s Weekend next year. Shout out to Brothers Zach Berard for coordinating the weekend festivities and Sam Wright who served as the auctioneer.

On Thursday, March 15th, the men of Chi Deuteron attended the Fraternal Excellence Awards for Kansas State University At the awards ceremony, Phi Gamma Delta won the Dean’s List Award and the Certificate of Achievement Learning - two very prestigious and welldeserved awards. Below is an excerpt taken from the awards ceremony:

“Our chapter’s scholarship incentive program is through the very successful Scholarship Dinner. Scholarship Dinner recognizes brothers with 4.0's and brothers who beat the All-Fraternity Average. The graduate advisor helps the chapter to put on a scholarship dinner by collecting the money that both the graduates and undergraduates contribute to the pool. This money is then divided among the members who match or surpass the All Fraternity Average GPA. This money is handed out in conjunction with a certificate the celebrates the consistent achievements of that specific brother. Specialized certificates are made and separate recognition is reserved for brothers who achieve 4.0 GPAs in one or more semesters. Over $12,000 was awarded to Phi Gamma Delta members last year alone thanks to our graduate brother’s generosity. Every week at chapter, the scholarship chairman selects a scholar of the week, a “Big 4” of the week (brother with a 4.0 that demonstrated academic excellence or improved to 4.0), and a Class of the Week. These awards help the chapter celebrate brothers who are achieving and add a certain excitement to the scholarship chairman report. A personal example of this was in the Spring Semester where Phi Gamma Delta achieved a 3.48, with the Junior Class awarded Class of the Week for the last 4 weeks of the semester. This was a point of pride for all the juniors, and members were not only motivated to continue to achieve, but to continue to push the envelope so that when they attended chapter, they would be able to engage in friendly brotherly bragging about being number one for another consecutive week. The scholarship chairman also puts on the “Wheel Spin” every Wednesday at chapter. The Wheel Spin is a list of names of all brothers who achieve a 90% on an exam or major assignment that week. The chairman then would randomly select one of these names to receive a cash prize, all the while, the brothers are giving a drumroll with anticipation.

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not: unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On!’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”
