Us names olympic hockey squads for Sochi

Marché U vous souhaite une bonne et heureuse année

The United States named 13 members of the 2010 Winter Olympic silver-medal squad to the roster for the Sochi Winter Olympics after the National Hockey League’s Winter Classic on Wednesday. A young and relatively inexperienced American squad lost to Canada in the Vancouver Olympic final when Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby netted the gold-medal goal for a home-ice triumph. The 25-man US roster for Sochi next month includes returning leaders, among them forwards David Backes, Dustin Brown, Zach Parise and Ryan Callahan plus defenseman Ryan Suter and Brooks Orpik and goaltender Ryan Miller. Centers Backes, Paul Stastny, Ryan Kesler and Joe Pavelski are back from Vancouver and joined by Derek Stepan, the top scorer for the 2010 world junior champion US squad. Other wingers include Patrick Kane, Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk, Blake Wheeler, Max Pacioretty and T.J. Oshie. «Any time you get a chance to represent your country, it’s great,» Kessel said. «I’m really excited.» Van Riemsdyk said «it’s going to be a huge thrill.» Orpik’s NHL backline partner for Pittsburgh, Paul Martin, is among the other Olympic defensemen, as are Kevin Shattenkirk, John Carlson, Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler and Ryan McDonagh.

Miller will be joined as an Olympic netminder by Detroit’s Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Quick, the Los Angeles goalie who won last year’s Conn Smythe Trophy as the NHL’s best goaltender. «It’s a tremendous honor,» Howard said. «Words cannot put it into perspective.» Among those not named to the US lineup were bobby Ryan and Jason Pominville, who rank third and fourth in goals this season among American NHL players. The deadline for naming rosters is next week, although nations may substitute for injuries after that. The United States will be in Group A with host Russia, Slovakia and Slovenia in the Olympic preliminary round. The Americans open February 13 against Slovakia. The US Olympic women’s hockey roster was also named. It included 11 Olympic veterans, with forward Julie Chu making her fourth Olympic appearance and becoming the oldest woman on a US Olympic hockey squad at 31. The US women’s lineup also includes last year’s US college player of the year, forward Amanda Kessel, the sister of Toronto Maple Leafs star forward and fellow Olympian Phil Kessel. The US women, who like the men lost to Canada in the 2010 Olympic hockey final, will open in Sochi on February 8 against Finland.

From 14th to 19th April 2014, St. Barth will be host to the fifth edition of the Voiles de SaintBarth. More than seventy boats and 1000 sailors are expected to attend the event, which in just four editions has become a must for those who enjoy racing in the Caribbean. Owners, sailors and partners have got it right. The historic partners will in fact be joined this year by Veuve Clicquot, the world famous champagne house. Once again, this year we can look forward to a fantastic line-up in St. Barth. Five months before the starting gun is fired, forty boats have already registered in the five classes that are available: Maxi yachts, Spinnaker class, Non Spinnaker class, IRC 52s and Multihulls. “This is clear progress, as usually at this time of year, we have only had around thirty boats registered. So I think it is quite reasonable to look forward to seeing more than seventy boats lining up this time,” declared François Tolède, the organizer of the Voiles de Saint-Barth alongside Luc Poupon. High performance sailing out on the water and a

friendly atmosphere ashore, and all within the magnificent setting of St. Barth. The concept attracts the world’s finest yachts, including Rambler, George David’s famous Maxi-Yacht, already confirmed to be returning to the event. Once again this year, we will be able to admire the elegance and speed of this Reichel-Pugh designed 90-foot boat. Selene, Wendy Schmidt’s Swan 80 will also be attending, as will Ocean Phoenix, the Spanish Humphreys 77 skippered by Juan Luis Serra Lalaurie. Staying with the Maxi yachts, for the first time we shall be able to enjoy the sight of Bella Mente, Hap Fauth’s mini-maxi (designed by Judel/Vrolijk) with her crew of 26, including Mike Sanderson and Dee Smith, the Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup heroes. One of their major rivals will be Caol Ila R, Alex Schaerer’s Mills designed 68-foot boat, a stand out performer last summer, when she won the Rolex Capri Sailing Week Volcano Race, achieving line honours and first place under corrected time ahead of thirteen other maxis.
