Story of Inspiration Tamara Young Owner of Local Boutique, Consign Couture
Betrayal: A Love Story
hings just weren’t adding up. The fights. The financial statements. The credit card bills. The explanations of why debt collectors were calling. Tamara Young knew something wasn’t right, but she didn’t know just how wrong things were until one fateful night when she decided to look for the truth. “When I saw an email confirming my fiancé’s infidelity—and the information about the financial betrayal—I wasn’t even mad,” she said. “I woke him up, hugged him and said goodbye.” That moment of true agency came from a deep sense of self and a resilient spirit, two traits that would help Young navigate the next 15 months. The complex and frustrating reality of financial abuse doesn’t just affect those suckered into internet scams, it’s a pattern of abusive behavior that can happen to absolutely anyone, including a selfassured, successful young woman like Young. It’s insidious, taking many victims years to recognize the signs and symptoms of their partner or spouse’s controlling behavior. Why? Because money is something that causes a lot of anxiety and shame for many people. So much that they stay in the dark about their financial situation and let others take the wheel when it comes to bills, taxes and savings.
“Everyone has a money story—we each need to learn about our relationship with money. We need to understand each aspect of it, even if we think we’re not good with that stuff.” Young said. “I didn’t care before about where my money went. Now I care. I want to teach other women to be more empowered when it comes to their finances. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. That’s why I share my story: To help other women take charge of their own power.”
Being engaged to one of her closest companions and someone she had known for her entire life, it took five of their six years in a romantic relationship for Young’s confidence in her own decision-making and money management skills, to gradually erode. Young was made to feel like everything that didn’t go well for them was her fault. That all their fights about money and resources were about her choices, when in reality more of those choices were slowly being taken away from her. Every resource she had, from her savings to her credit to the equity in her home, was being drained and she had no idea. Debt, back taxes and liens—every angle possible, was used by Young’s fiancé to fund a separate, secret life while in a relationship with her. The impact on her money wasn’t the most painful part; it was what this did to her usually unshakable sense of self. A self-made woman who, at the beginning of the relationship, was at the top of her career in sales and the owner of a small business. She is the last type of person one would expect to be caught off-guard by anything like financial abuse. In the height of the abuse, Young wasn’t allowed access to their accounts and given only cash or prepaid credit cards to use for her needs. She would have to call her fiancé before every purchase, not trusting her own inner compass to make good decisions about money and not wanting to risk an argument otherwise. “Financial abuse is more about the feeling you have about using your own money. It takes away your ability to make decisions on your own.” Young said. “When it came to my spending money, to my healthcare or anything else I needed money for, my fiancé would pay for it, always with cash.” Bouncing Back From Financial Abuse When the relationship ended, she discovered that she was deeply in debt. Her home was in foreclosure, her credit cards were maxed out and she had no money to her name. She didn’t even have a car. Drawing on her inner strength and tenacity, she attacked every single issue head-on by creating an action plan.
“I want to teach other women to be more empowered when it comes to their finances. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else. That’s why I share my story: To help other women take charge of their own power.”

Photo Courtesy: Meg Nanna With the help of close friends, financial advisors and supporters, she rebuilt her life brick by brick, paying off over $55,000 in 15 months— a huge accomplishment hard won by daily work to get her life back. On the worst days, she used a four-word focus to get through: Sleep, water, moving and food. Young experienced a supportive community that rallied to her side throughout this ordeal and it was through those relationships and the relationship with her mother, that she was able to gain back her confidence and her decisive inner voice. “I didn’t think I could come through it. All day, every day, I had messes to clean up,” Young said. “I had support from my friends—they coached me and guided me through. My mom, who I got my sense of confidence, helped me feel like this was going to be ok. I realized, through all of this, that the relationship wasn’t actually real. Who I thought that person was, didn’t actually exist. I was the one that existed. I was true and honest. This wasn’t my fault. This could happen to anyone.” A Beacon For Others
After regaining control of her money and her life, Young’s focus turned to empowering others (women in particular) to take charge of their financial situations. Though a seldom talked about epidemic, a recent survey by National Network to End Domestic Violence found that financial abuse happens in 98% of all domestic abuse cases. Victims have their resources limited by their damaged credit and
diminished bank accounts, leaving them with few options to leave their abuser. Despite how common this crime is, it’s rarely talked about due to the stigma surrounding abuse and people’s discomfort discussing financial matters. Yet the number of women specifically, who suffer from financial abuse keeps growing. Young’s mission is to inspire other women to really understand their relationship with money and how money is handled in their relationship. She wants them to be able to recognize the signs of financial abuse, such as: •A partner that insists on being the only one handling the finances. •A partner’s stories about finances are not adding up. •An increase in arguments about money. •Being given access only to cash or a prepaid credit card. •Feeling compelled to call your partner to approve purchases—you feel guilty about spending. •Being told you are bad with money. •Difficulty accessing accounts, healthcare or other major financial accounts.
“An abuser uses every resource they have access to,” Young said. “They pay for you a la carte, using manipulation and gas lighting tactics to undermine and erode your confidence. But it’s not about you. It’s not you—it’s them. The sooner people who find themselves in a situation of financial abuse realize this, the sooner they can start to heal.” Emotionally, the journey back to her core self has been long but rewarding. As of August 2016, Young is completely debt free, her business is thriving and her support system is stronger than ever. Still the owner of Consign Couture, a local boutique in St. Johns, Young is also a sought after speaker for companies like PepsiCo, bringing her own brand of swagger to teach audiences how to own their confidence. Helen & husband Brian have 3 children. In 2008, after the birth of her second son, Helen was working as a nurse in a busy emergency room and developed a product line that helped her collect and save more breastmilk. She started a company, Milkies, and began to manufacture and sell the product, the Milk-Saver. The Milk-Saver was eventually patented and is still sold all over the world to help mothers meet their breastfeeding goals. Helen oversaw every aspect of building Milkies into a world class brand and in 2013 she sold the company. She now oversees product development and writes for the company blog, appears in podcasts and speaks at events about pregnancy, labor, delivery and the science of raising healthy children. In early 2016, Helen achieved her dream of earning an advanced degree when she completed her coursework for a Masters of Science in Nursing.
