Over ten years after their debut album British Sea Power are going stronger than ever. Their recent album, Machineries of Joy, peaked at an impressive number two in the UK Indie Album Chart, proving that even after a decade together these boys still have what it takes to make a hit record.

With a truly dedicated and, some would say, cult following British Sea Power are currently one of the best bands in the country. Their creatively composed rhythms combined with lyrical expertise have ensured success for the band, who hail from all over the country, from Cumbria to Yorkshire to Ealing to Shropshire.

As part of Leadmill’s Ultimate Friday Indie Night Canterbury will be taking to the stage of the club to entertain us with a night of pure Indie pleasure. The woman behind the voice is embarking on a 19-date tour and (aren’t we lucky?) she’s making a stop off at Sheffield City Hall along the way.

Haim Charlotte Grainger Last year one of the biggest success stories in music came from three valley girls and the son of Irish-American singer Danny Hutton. This year Haim are embarking on two tours, which include a variety of UK dates. We speak to Este Arielle Haim about fame, sisterhood and, of course, Prince.

To say that Haim are an overnight success would be underselling them somewhat. They aren’t some sudden hit-making machine plunging from darkness into an awaiting spotlight; rather they’ve taken their time to slowly trickle into music lovers’ psyches so that now, mere months after their studio debut, their harmonies and riffs are as familiar as records we heard as children.

The band, which now consists of LA born sisters Alana, Danielle and Este along with drummer Dash Hutton, has existed for over six years in various forms, though the girls have been

playing together, in Este’s own words, “since [they] could formulate sentences”. When I speak to her she is on the road with the band, she is chatty yet collected and articulate, she doesn’t hold back and laughs naturally whilst slipping in childhood anecdotes and swearing infrequently.

Este is the bassist, “I think other bass players who are girls are really inspiring to me. It’s nice to feel like you’re in a club of badass ladies”, with the infamous ‘bass face’ when playing live, she is also the eldest of the sisters; something she admits has made her a little over protective.

“I think that I’m protective over both of them, probably to a fault almost. There have been times where I think someone’s mistreating my sister, even from the time they were at elementary school. If I felt someone was bullying them or being mean to them or saying mean things to them I’d be the first one to come to their elementary school.” She says, laughing all the time, “I think I scared the shit out of a ten year old when I was like 16. I basically instilled fear into this child. Looking back on it I think it was just the motherly instinct in me that was trying to protect my sister and the good thing was the kid literally didn’t fuck with Alana ever again.”

This story is unsurprising; the fact that the sisters are extremely close is the worst kept secret in the music industry right now.

Throughout the interview Este gushes about her siblings, talking about growing up together and their teenage ‘misadventures’. “Danielle, Alana and I, we did everything from school plays to school choir. We played instruments basically from the time we could hold them. We were always really involved in music and I think [our parents] devious plan was to just tire us out because we had so much energy and I think probably a little bit of undiagnosed ADHD.” It

took more than just music to tire the girls out, though, and they also played a number of sports including football, or ‘soccer’ as Este calls it.

“Our dad was a footballer, so we were really involved in soccer. Alana was the best out of all of us. I was horrible at it.” I’m surprised at just how modest Este comes across and sincere too. You might expect that a member of such a high profile band would carry with them an air of arrogance, but Este is easy-going and talks freely.

On the subject of her sisters, Este is bold and completely engaged. It was when Este first got her driving license, she explains, that the girls cemented their close friendship. “In LA you can get your license a little too early I think; I got my license when I was 15.” says Este, “I was so excited. I just felt so free. And I really wanted to go and see bands in LA, I wanted to go explore LA.“ Unfortunately for Este her friends weren’t as enthusiastic about going out to see bands and weren’t necessarily into the same music as she was, meaning she had to drag along younger sister Danielle. “I was 15 for fuck’s sake; it was the last thing I wanted to do to go to a show by myself.” She explains. “I forced her to be my date to all these shows.”

When Alana graduated middle school she was invited along too, leading to the three of them traipsing around the city stalking after bands and generally getting up to mischief. At this point all of the girls were still teenagers, so getting into places was a challenge to say the least. “We had to sneak into a lot of places and jump a lot of 10 / Haim

She says before proclaiming him to be “some kind of alien, not human” because of the incredible music he creates. Talking to Este, it’s the first day of Haim’s European tour, so when I mention England she slips into a monologue about our beloved country. “It’s beautiful here.

It’s like something out of a storybook. Being from LA you don’t see anything other than sunshine, so being here is like very exotic for us.

You know, there’s like these snowy mountain tops everywhere and these beautiful lakes everywhere and boats and delicious coffee and delicious food, so it’s pretty awesome.”

fences, open some back doors and sneak into a lot of venues.” This is where the girls first found their love of rock music and the lifestyle that goes along with it, they “fell in love with these LA bands and became friends with them” and resolved to emulate them in their own lives.

Later each of the girls would pursue careers in various other bands and even solo, before they ever dreamt of working together as one collective. When they finally did come together it was in the form of an experiment and due to the fact that they felt they weren’t being heard within other projects. They wrote their first song in about half an hour. “It wasn’t a very good song.” Whilst telling me this I can hear Este’s voice break into a self-deprecating laugh. “It was actually kind of terrible, but it was a song and we wrote it together in complete democracy.”

That happened over six years ago and you could say it was the birth of the band Haim, though the girls had a way to go before coming out as a fully-fledged band.

I think the fact that we’re a rock band and they’re a rock band maybe is the connection, but I don’t see the likeness.” Whilst on the subject of idols we can’t neglect the legend that is Prince. Once Este starts talking about him she cannot stop herself. “I think collectively it would be a dream for us to touch the hem of Prince’s garment. I think that just to be around him would be pretty incredible. He’s been a very big inspiration to us. I think his artistry and his song writing is just breath taking and incredible.”

“For us I feel like it was just a slow and steady climb.” says Este of the band’s recent success.

“The big thing for us was just we wanted to be able to see the world and make music and to be able to do it together. We were just like ‘Holy shit, we can make music together, and we can write music together and have fun doing it and also get to see the world.’”

Last year and after years of perfecting their sound, “I call it wood-shedding; people call it different things”, Haim released their debut studio album, ‘Days Are Gone’. The overwhelming success that followed could not have been predicted with single ‘The Wire’ peaking at number 16 in the UK Singles Chart and the album itself reaching number one in the UK Album Chart.

Since then the band has been compared to numerous greats, most frequently Fleetwood Mac, something that Este finds flattering and simultaneously inexplicable. “I think that statement is very intimidating. Being compared to a band like Fleetwood Mac is kind of a very heavy achievement.” The girls grew up listening to them along with various other 1960’s and 1970’s rock bands in San FernandoValley when they were children. It’s no wonder, then, that the girls find the comparison somewhat intimidating. “They’re a great band, so it’s difficult to hear that. Of course 11 / Haim

After the tour of Europe the band will be off to North America for a series of dates including San Francisco, Vegas and Nashville. Haim has allowed the sisters to fulfil their dream of working and travelling together, for them it’s a vehicle enabling them to make the most of their loves, though at their core the girls are sisters first. “Just because we’re in a band together doesn’t mean we’re not sisters. We play our shows and at the end of the night we’re tired, so we’ll go get something to eat and then go see a movie. “ Despite undertaking two epic tours this year, Este is confident that the band will still manage to work on new material. “I would love to just perpetually tour for the rest of my life, but there’s also a part of me that wants to keep creating.” muses Este, “I think that the plan for 2014 is just to keep being creative and just be a band and have fun. I think that it’s very important to make sure you’re still having fun.”

The Face of South Yorkshire Charlotte Grainger

Representing South Yorkshire is certainly no easy feat. The region’s inhabitants are excessively proud of being Yorkshire ‘born and bread’; in fact, this phrase is something of a mantra, repeated daily by proud Yorkshire men and, of course, women. With that in mind, then, the person chosen to represent South Yorkshire in terms of beauty, fitness and altruism has a great deal to live up to.

The annual Miss South Yorkshire Pageant is a chance for the young women in the region to step up and compete for the chance to represent the area, whilst also raising money for a good local cause. This year’s charity of choice for the competition is Safe At Last, an organisation, which helps young people who are at risk through running away. Each finalist is charged with the task of raising money for the charity through events and collections, and money from the finale ticket sale also goes towards the cause.

One of the finalists in the 2014 event is Demi Marsden, 19, a beautician from South Yorkshire. Sitting opposite me now she laughs a lot as she talks and gesticulates wildly with every word. She’s excitable and the subject of the pageant is one she can talk endlessly about.

“It weren’t cause I wanted to win it, it was more about helping people. I want them to look at me like a role model and I want to help raise money for charity.” Says Demi, “I wanted to be Miss South Yorkshire, as I wanted to be the role model for people to want to do what I do. I just thought I might as well go for it. I’ve got nothing to lose” Demi is hoping to win the title of Miss Fitness 2014, since she is a gym fanatic and is most excited about the ‘boot camp’ element of the competition in which the girls will be pushed to their limit in terms of physical endurance in a bid to win the title.

“

I feel quite different to other contestants. It’s not the way I’ve been brought up to be pushed into pageants, I’ve always been pushed into working hard and being an all-rounder I suppose.

Another finalist, Priya Dyson, 22, is a student of Psychology at The University of Sheffield and was picked out of a crowd to be a part of the competition when she was just a teenager. “I actually got asked at the Clothes Show in Birmingham when I was 18 and I was like ‘Oh, I’m a bit shy. I don’t know what to do’ and I dropped out. And I got an email again asking if I wanted to do it and I thought ‘Go on, then’.”

After initially being too meek to take part in a beauty pageant, four years later Priya decided that she would give it a go, something that can in part be attributed to her friend, Charlotte Baldwin-Turner, who just happens to design dresses. “She was looking for some work so I thought it’d be a good opportunity for us to work together on something. I thought we could make it a bit of a project.”

Mixing study and pageants can be difficult, but for Priya both are equally as important and she’s not one to neglect her education. “I feel quite different to other contestants. It’s not the way I’ve been brought up to be pushed into pageants, I’ve always been pushed working hard and being an all-rounder I suppose.”

As both girls talk they are undeniably cheery. This may simple be down to the fundamental nature of pageant contestants, but could also be because of the general temperament of people in Yorkshire.

A 2011 study found that the people in this county are some of the happiest in the country.

“Well I’m always happy so I suppose that’s true.” Says Demi and then laughs, whilst Priya touches on the north-south divide topic, that we were all so desperately trying to ignore. “Yeah I definitely think they’re warm and welcoming. Well they say, don’t they, that northerners are much friendlier than southerners, I don’t know, I’m very proud of being from the north.”

She says.

Recently though there has been uproar within Sheffield and beyond due to a recent statement by Labour MP, Jim Dowd, saying that, firstly he had never heard of the beloved northern Hendersons Relish and secondly that it was just a copy of Worcestershire Sauce. This, obviously a very serious issue, is one the Miss South Yorkshire contestants are quick to comment on.

“When people go away, I know friends who have gone to university, they’ve all taken bottles of Hendersons Relish.” Says Priya, “I don’t know what he’s talking about really to be honest.”

Being crowned Miss South Yorkshire 2014 is more than a mere title, it will give one young girl the opportunity to go forward into the Miss Galaxy England competition and continue to raise money for worthy causes on behalf of the region. Whilst many see events such as this one as a shallow celebration of physical attractiveness, it is in fact an honest celebration of heritage and home pride.

Richard Taylor Plays Sheffield Fundraiser

Blink at The Crucible Charlotte Grainger

Love is not a concrete set of feelings. That is probably the best way to sum up Blink. And there’s truth in it too; love is an all-encompassing term, applied to a whole range of feelings felt in different ways and at different times. One person’s idea of love might be all chocolates, flowers and candle-lit dinners, whilst another person’s is watching their partner on a baby monitor screen and following them around London ten paces back.

Blink is a quirky modern day love story, which explores what it means to be alone and, yet, somehow together in the twenty first century. It’s refreshing to see such an original plotline, which manages to be romantic without being soppy.

What’s most astonishing about this play is how much has been done with so little. For a start there are only two actors, Thomas Pickles and Lizzy Watts, who manage seamlessly to play the protagonists, Sophie and Jonah, and a host of extras they encounter along the way. Props are scarce and the set is minimal; green grass carpet and a tree covered backdrop, a couple of desks and chairs and two boxes. The two half narrate, half act out a plot over a number of months in just 80 minutes, flitting between characters and settings. The protagonists stumble through their own isolated existences connected only by a baby monitor and a shared sense of companionship.

Written by Phil Porter Blink was engaging from start to finish, drawing in the audience into an alternate lifestyle and world. The end of the play leaves you with the feeling that there is nothing at all creepy about watching strangers, stalking them and ultimately falling in love with them.

If you pop down to the warm and cosy Harland Café on Thursday 27th March, you’ll be in for one hell of a treat. Currently touring the UK with a brand new set, award-winning acoustic guitarist Richard Taylor will be gracing Harland Café with his talented presence before he heads off for his first overseas tour. The event has been arranged by local children’s tutor Sultana Begum, 23, to raise awareness and funds for international medical humanitarian organisation MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders). “MSF provide medical aid and supplies to those who need it most – in countries hit by war, disaster and conflict. Everyone is sharing the same world and we can all make a positive impact on eachother’s lives if we try – even if we are across the borders.” Only 4% of MSF’s donated funds goes towards staff and admin, so you can be sure that coming to this event will be really making a difference. Dread Funky Launches New Studio As of February, independent clothing brand and hair studio Dread Funky has been operating out of its brand new studio and shop at CADS. The launch kicked off with an Open Day featuring a clothes exhibition, accessories stall, and the music that inspired the business. Founder Lauren Dowling couldn’t be happier and has big things planned this year: “I’ve just brought out a new line of men’s and women’s clothing for people who like to stand out from the crowd. That’s basically the point of Dread Funky – to be different, to be unique. I got into making my own clothes out of frustration for not finding clothes that were ‘funky’ enough. Ten years later I turned it into a business, and three years on from there, Dread Funky keeps getting bigger and better!” The Dread Funky studio will also be hosting a series of crafting workshops throughout the week, every week, including bag making and batik for beginners. Workshops £5 each, all materials and sewing machines provided.

Comedy of Errors Josh O’Hara

As I took my seat in the intimate surroundings of the Lyceum theatre, the locals of Ephesus, who had been transformed into Hispanic, moustache bearing, sombrero wearing gentlemen, welcomed the audience by playing their array of instruments and carrying out some questionable dance moves. However, I didn’t quite understand the reasoning behind the locals sporting football shirts from all over the globe. I guess they did add to the fact it was modern take on a Shakespeare play though; I doubt you could get Ronaldinho printed on a Barcelona shirt back in then.

‘Comedy of errors’ is one of Shakespeare’s earliest and most farcical plays. Propeller’s rendition definitely does it justice with their incredibly witty production. The all male cast renders the hilarious female characters in the play even more side splittingly funny. The action is centered around the coincidence of two sets of twins that have both been separated at birth, suddenly finding themselves in the city of Ephesus. The slapstick humour is mostly born from the twins being mistook for one another by the people of the city throughout a series of events; the clever puns and Shakespearean language paired with the modern set and costumes make for a fantastic celebration of Shakespeare’s legacy and the English language itself.

The comic tone continues when all the chaos and confusion finally comes to an end and all is resolved. All the action that has gone before is finally clarified which unveils a few embarrassing mistakes, notably, when Antipholus’ wife releases it is not her husband with whom she has dined and then taken to bed, but in fact his long lost twin brother. With the level of comic performance consistent throughout the whole cast, this production makes for a light hearted, easy to watch and endlessly entertaining Shakespearean experience.

"Support Dogs" Charity of the Year for Mercury Taxis Lauren Spencer

To us Mercury is our quick fix, sure way of getting from a to b with their fantastic service and reliability. However, 2014 sees Mercury Taxis teaming up with three major charities as focus for all the fundraising efforts made by the company.

Support Dog’s being one of these and Mercury’s Charity of the Year, welcomed their first puppy of the year, suitably named Mercury to the training centre recently by Mercury Taxis general manager, Dermot Griffiths. Mr Griffiths has a personal attachment to this charity, which works to transform lives of those affected by autism, epilepsy or physical disability through registered dog assistance.

The support of Mercury Taxis is undoubtedly essential and a huge gift to Support Dogs Charity.

It costs around £30,000 to train each assistance dog, so Mercury Taxis is providing a way forward, making the future for this charity look very bright and prosperous. Support Dogs aims to change and make a difference to somebodies life, with Mercury Taxis opening up and helping towards many more opportunities for this amazing charity.

Translations at The Crucible Shazia Afzal

As part of the Brian Friel Season Sheffield Crucible played host to Translations, an original play about language and love. Set in the quiet community of Baile Beag (later anglicised to Ballybeg), in County Donegal, in nineteenthcentury Ireland the play portrays the conflict of English and Irish language during that turbulent period.

The entire play was, thankfully, presented in English, however the Irish characters, though speaking in English, are supposed to be speaking in Irish. This is fairly easy to grasp and you soon learn that the English and Irish characters do

The Dance of Love Millie Hamnett

Meadowhall gave something back to their customers this Valentine’s Day by hosting a danceathon in the mall. The Strictly Come Dancing style dance was a way of the shopping centre thanking their customers and offering something a bit different for the day of love.

Olivia and Adam, competition-winning dancers from the famous Sheffield dance school City Limits, were on hand to lead the way whilst Sheffield star, Paul Pashley, set the scene singing classics to get people in the mood.

The dance was a success, with large numbers of shoppers and staff donning their dancing shoes to Waltz their way through the mall. Sheffield residents traveled to the shopping centre especially for the event, wanting to do something a bit different for Valentine’s Day. Friends, lovers and strangers all gathered together to enjoy the event and show off their ballroom dancing moves. Thorntons and Hotel Chocolat joined in, offering sweet treats to anyone who had a dance.

“Meadowhall’s a great public place and its Valentine’s Day so we wanted to try and get everyone into the spirit a little bit. There’s definitely love in the air.” said 16-year-old professional dancer Olivia.

The hit 1940’s love story will be coming to Sheffield this April for a night of showbiz and cabaret. ‘Miss Nightingale – The Musical’ by Matthew Bugg is back after a wildly successful tour of the UK and West End last year.

The musical tells the story of feisty northern singer Maggie who longs for fame and the spotlight. Along with her gay refugee songwriter, George, Maggie plans to take the world by storm.

George struggles throughout, hiding the big secret of his sexuality, whilst trying to make Maggie into the star she deserves to be. When the duo meet Sir Frank, though, everything changes for both of them.

Maggie is catapulted to fame under the alluring name of Miss Nightingale, with outrageous costumes and saucy songs making her the talk of the town, whilst George gets caught up in a gay love affair, which is not only illegal, but also unpatriotic.

The musical also has a special link to the Steel City, as it is the official touring production celebrating the 20th anniversary of the University of Sheffield National Fairground Archive (NFA), which is a unique collection of material covering the culture and history of popular entertainment from the 1800’s onward.

You can catch ‘Miss Nightingale – The Musical’ at Library Theatre in Sheffield from 28th April until 2nd May.

Tamper Late Chinese New Year Sam Whitaker Never having celebrated Chinese New Year before, I was eager to get involved this year, but where to go? ‘Tamper: Late’ is an evening regularly hosted at the Seller’s Wheel branch of Tamper on Arundel St. Each event revolves around a different theme in which chef Steve Tauilli crafts a menu to impress. The first ‘Tamper: Late’ of 2014 just so happened to be a celebration of Chinese New Year. Granted it wasn’t the most authentic location for the experience, but the diversity of the whole thing intrigued me.

The waiting staff, friendly as ever, showed us to an intricately arranged table, complete with chopsticks and fortune cookie. According to my cookie I can achieve anything I set my mind to and since it was the last day of my participation in Dry January, that meant setting my mind to ignoring the carefully selected drinks menu that listed no less than two selections per course, chosen for their accompanying potential. I listened to what the wise fortune cookie foretold and ordered a (non-alcoholic) ginger beer.

The starters arrived, Sheffield Honey & five spice braised short beef rib with crispy lotus root & spring onions. Really tender, simple and delicious.

I realised as we awaited the next course that the ambience created by the

mood lit exposed brick walls transformed the café into a contemporary boutique restaurant with brilliant success. For main we were treated to my personal favorite Chinese style, Dim Sum. The steamed char siu pork bun was perfect, filling and yet light whilst the crispy chicken & oyster won tons were all about bold flavors which really gave the dish a great edge. The dumplings came with moo shu vegetables & dipping sauce, which were really exceptional.

Desert was the only course that divided opinion at our table. We were served Nian gao, traditional Chinese New Year rice cake, with chocolate and candied orange sauce. Perhaps it was too far removed from the deserts we’re used to for everyone to enjoy but I really appreciated it. It felt like the dishes were authentic to the event and I thought it accompanied the meal well.

A final course of green tea was served, accompanied by traditional red paper envelopes containing chocolate coins that brought in the year of the horse in a charmingly unique style. Chef Steve Tauilli, creator of the menu, proved not only an impressive ability to turn his attention to culturally diverse foods but also his aficionado in constructing a menu that looked beyond the fusion cuisine that is regularly presented as Chinese food. The whole evening was thoroughly enjoyable and the uniqueness of the concept a breath of fresh air.

The Taste of La Tasca

After a particularly stressful week at work what you really need is some good food, good company and excellent service. When I headed down to La Tasca in the Oasis section at Meadowhall on that fateful Friday night I expected nothing short of some greatly needed stress relief and I was not disappointed.

At the door an extremely cheery man, who turned out to be the manager Craig, greeted my boyfriend and I. He took us to our seat and promptly presented us with the tapas menu and a huge smile.

The ‘right’, or at least the traditional, way to eat tapas is to share it with everyone at the table. Remember you are not merely ordering a couple of dishes for yourself, rather contributing with your order to the entire shared meal. This presented my boyfriend and I with something of a problem; he is a seafood fanatic, whilst I really cannot stand it. After much deliberation we settled on a compromise, one seafood dish and five strictly non-seafood dishes.

The staff at La Tasca have a rare talent, they are able to suggest a wide variety of dishes and also manage to have a wide knowledge of each

suggested dish. This meant that we were never at a loss for ideas when ordering. We opted for the patatas bravas (spicy potatoes), huevos cabreaos (Spanish egg and chips), gambas al ajillo (chilli and garlic prawns), pork belly, boneless pork ribs and pollo Marbella (chicken and chorizo in a delicious sauce). All of the above were perfectly complimented by a nice cold lager and nice warm service.

The highlight of this for me was the boneless pork ribs, which were beautifully cooked and of which I could have eaten three times as much, though that would not have been particularly healthy. The lowlight, however, was me trying a prawn, which I was forced to do by my boyfriend and which was secretly very tasty, I am a big fan of chilli and garlic, but let’s not tell him that.

Then came my favourite time: dessert time!

A friendly waiter suggested we try the ‘dulce placeres de La Tasca’; chocolate brownie, warm pancakes, vanilla cheesecake, churros, strawberries, vanilla ice cream and two sauces - chocolate dipping sauce and a berry compote.

This was the ideal way to finish the meal and, whilst I haven’t been a fan of churros in the past, they were soft, delicious and not too heavy.

The world of a celiac, that is people who suffer with celiac digestive disorder, is not a happy one.

Unable to eat wheat or gluten products they are confined to eating bland and carb-less dishes, which, as you might imagine, are anything but satisfying. However, if you’re a celiac and it’s Mediterranean cuisine you crave then you are in for a treat.

Tucked away on Castle Street, Roma Bar is Sheffield’s first established Gluten-free bar and restaurant, serving some of the most authentic Italian specialities which are even suitable for celiacs!

When we stopped by one mid-spring afternoon to sample some of Roma’s fine cooking, we were treated to a traditional taste of Italy right here in the Steel City. I opted for the highly regarded Penne Alla Sarda, a traditional pasta dish hailing from Sardina. Plated up before me was a succulent fillet of lamb coated in a chilli tomato sauce on a bed of perfectly cooked pasta.

This was accompanied by a large glass of Nero D’ Avola, red wine, which, as I always say, is the ideal accompaniment to any dish, but particularly suits red meat dishes and Italian dishes alike.

My experience of Roma was the ideal afternoon excursion and I would strongly suggest this restaurant-come-bar to anyone.

Penne a la Sarda

The Whisky Files is back once more and this time a more heavily bearded and soon to be America bound Chris Bamford is here to talk us through whiskies of the world.

The first whisky we’re looking at this month is the Edradour Ruby Port Cask Matured, a less than smooth drink, but popular amongst whisky drinkers all the same. As the name might

Edradour is 46% ABV and will cost you £3.20 for a single.

Next we move on to the rather interesting case of Signatory, who are mainly an independent bottlers meaning buy stock from other distilleries, bottle it and then sell it on. “There’s a lot of trading in whisky essentially.” Says Chris. In fact, there are only three distilleries in Scotland with their own bottling line. This particular bottle is from the Clynelish Distillery in the Highlands, which is quite a modern distillery founded in 1968 and is next door to an original distillery of the same name. Shakespeares has an 18 year old single barrel Signatory which was bottled on 6th September 2011. This whisky is also 46 % ABV and will also cost you just £3.20 for a single.

For our final whisky this month we’re travelling all the way to Japan to sample Miyagikyo, which is a whisky owned by Nikka, part of Asahi Breweries. The whisky itself is quite light, as a lot of Japanese whiskies tend to be; quite light, quite delicate, fruity, but not overly so. “It’s quite a good beginners whisky and because it’s quite rare it’s a little more expensive.” If you’re a beginner or just want a soft and easy drink Miyagiko, at just 43% ABV, will set you back £3.80 for a single at Shakespeares.

After forty wildly successful years together The Stranglers are this year embarking on their Ruby Anniversary tour. We caught up with the oldest member of the band, Jet Black, who at 75 is still going strong.

Critically acclaimed jazz outfit, Get The Blessing, first got the attention they so rightly deserve back in 2008 when the won the BBC Jazz Award for Best Album with ‘All is Yes’.

This year the band releases their new EP ‘Lope & Antilope’ and will embark on a UK tour, stopping off at Sheffield on the way. We caught up with the band for a quick chat.

What can people expect from the tour?

‘Excitement’ in a word.

How would you describe your sound in three words?

Will you be doing the entire tour yourself or will someone be filling in for you on some shows?

Tasty. Surprising . Life-affirming.

The entire show is a bit excessive for my 75 year old frame so my understudy will do the first few numbers.

How do you find improvisation as opposed to traditional music composing?

Do you think this will be the last Stranglers tour?

We like to compose as we improvise and improvise as we compose our new album is composed entirely of improvisations, so we are a bit reluctant to separate the two.

I think that’s unlikely.

What can people expect when they come to see you live?

Not sure what they expect. Maybe blokes with bags on thier heads? What they get is a set of tunes carefully tailored to the audience and the venue, we like a lot of interaction, audience participation and we respond very much to how an audience receives us… So it’s different every night. We like to keep it fresh and exciting.

Forty years is a long time though, how do you feel the band has developed?

Massively, we were more one-dimensional at the start but you learn new tricks as you get older.

Are the dynamics any different now?

Well I would say dynamics are our specialty, so now, there are more of them!

You’ve previously written two books, is this something you would want to pursue more?

I certainly like writing, so yes, although there are no plans on the table at present.

Does the band have any plans to record a new album?

We are talking about it and we have some unrecorded songs, so it’s very likely.

What else do you have planned for 2014?

Worldwide tour.

How do you spend your time when you’re not rehearsing and playing?

Trying to stay alive!

The fact that you’re touring at age 75 is remarkable. Do you attribute your energy to a love of what you do or something else?

Well, unfortunately the love doesn’t actually produce any energy, but I wish it did. I’m just determined to do it as long as possible.

This year marks the band’s Ruby Anniversary and if you thought you’d seen the last of The Stranglers you were wrong. The band have already been confirmed to play V Festival in Staffordshire and Essex this August, as well as 53 Degrees in Preston this July. When Emily found herself stuck at home with a chronic illness she did not, as most would be inclined, wallow in self-pity, but instead taught herself the guitar and began writing songs.

A few years later, and when Emily had made a full recovery, she gave up her flat in London in favour of a shack, literally, in the Australian Bush.

This is where she set up her record label, Shaktu Records with her partner.

It was when she released her third album, ‘Believer’, that Emily has won herself much acclaim and recognition, with her beautiful songs regularly gracing Radio 2.

Her fourth album, “Bird Inside a Cage” was released last year and was produced by Nigel Butler , one of the producers on the hit UK show the X-Factor. Emily’s songs are lyrically stunning and this is something she has taken from album to album.

Tell us about ‘Lope & Antilope’.

‘Lope & Antilope’ is a new approach to recording for us. We recorded improvisations in west Wales and edited out the stuff we didn’t want and the rest became an album. It’s different from our other albums, but in some ways it’s even more similar.

What else have you got coming up in 2014?

We will be traveling across Europe consuming all in our path. Making some fun new videos…

Sheffield is Still Conscious Sam Whitaker

For those with an interest in the current music scene or anyone looking to get involved in it, I suggest a venture over to YouTube where Stop Drop Robot have debuted a new discussion based web series focusing on the Sheffield music scene. Named ‘Still Conscious’, the show explores current issues facing the scene, such as how a more considered approach to hosting gigs could benefit the bands and audience. Featuring guests Neil Hargreaves of Aggressive Management, Mat Hume of Fourth City and Michael Holmes of Sheffield Sound (three of Sheffield’s most prominent promoters), the first episode sets out on an open and informed discussion about the merits and issues of the current scene. The music included and debated is eclectic, ranging from the current wave of Electronica through to Grime, with small segments titled ‘Discover a New Sheffield Artist Today’ featuring samples from local artists such as Maza. Host Sam Christie of Stop Drop Robot guides intelligent discussions and exhibits an awareness which creates a lively and entertaining show to watch. Venues mentioned range from Plug and Corporation to Red House and Green Room, giving the show an inclusiveness, representing all things musical in Sheffield.

From infrequent gig goers to diehard champions of the Sheffield scene, Still Conscious is a must watch, informing on the latest gigs, bands and events hitting the city. Well produced, blending entertainment and insight seamlessly, Still Conscious could be a great tool in unifying the scene, potentially evolving into a fantastic platform for some great contributors who, until now, arguably didn’t have a place to gain exposure. Still Conscious pioneers a transparency, which will hopefully improve the experience of local music for everyone, promoters to punters and the bands in the middle.

Shannon Blandford British musician, DJ, record producer and radio presenter Ben Watt is back with new album ‘Hendra’, after 31 years of establishing himself as an admired DJ and dedicating time to personal label ‘Buzzin Fly’. Watt took a year off this to allow himself to work on two new projects, one being the new album which offers a cameo appearance from Pink Floyds very own David Gilmour, the other to focus on his second book ‘Romany and Tom’ which is available to pick up in stores now. (The US edition is set to be published by Bloomsbury in June).

Ben teamed up with Irish film-maker and critic ‘Mark Cousins’ in order to search for new talent to help create an exclusive music video for title track ‘Hendra’. Shot in East London, the video demonstrates a typical day of an Asian Shopkeeper, soon revealing a ‘minimasterpiece’ according to Mark himself.

Renowned for “Everything but the Girl” duet album with wife Tracey Thorn in 1999, the new album is set to be the biggest and best yet, being defined as “a folk-rock album in an electronic age” and I must say, after listening myself I couldn’t agree more, setting a chilled atmosphere it’s an excuse to relax after a long and stressful week at work. Get the candles lit and curl up on the sofa with an accompanied glass of wine. Sounds perfect, right?

The 52 year old artist has already announced dates for an upcoming 2014 solo tour across both the US and UK, one of the dates including Sheffield. The Greystones will be hosting the night on Tuesday 15th April and with tickets priced just £15 why not give the album a sneak preview and get yourself along. It’s a must for all you Folk music lovers out there!

The album can be pre-ordered in the UK on iTunes now, set for release on the 14th April and the single ‘Hendra’ can now be purchased.

Augustines St Vincent

Ina Fischer Augustine’s self-titled second album is a lot more upbeat and positive than its predecessor, ‘Rise Ye Sunken Ships’. It fulfils all the expectations one would have of a typical indie rock album. Following the intro, Cruel City immediately launches into an infectious drum beat and the catchy chorus will have you humming along “come on-a cruel city” in no time. At times, the Brooklyn-based trio’s sound bears resemblance to Mumford and Sons, especially following the crescendo on Walkabout and during the final song of the album, Hold on to Anything. But McCarthy’s signature raspy voice sets Augustines apart from any of their contemporaries. While most songs focus on a classic guitar/bass/drum combination, the inclusion of piano and string elements on some tracks raises Augustines’ sound above the indie rock average. This is an album that will no doubt resonate well with all fans of the genre.

Ina Fischer The tone of St Vincent’s fifth album ‘St. Vincent’ is at times melancholic, at other times slightly delirious and at best rather thrilling. Frequent minor chord changes and heavy distortion on the vocals and guitar make it everything but easy listening. St Vincent is the kind of record that becomes a lot more catchy on second listen. Especially Birth in Reverse, an up-tempo number that brings back memories of longforgotten tracks by The Fratellis. On some songs, Clark’s voice rings light and clear in an almost angelic manner, on others, namely Bring Me Your Loves, her wailing sounds almost manic.

This record is an el dorado for fans of electropop, synthesizers and groups like The Knife.

Nymphomaniac: Vol 1 and 2 Release date: 21st March 2014

For Lars Von Triers next trick he will be making a film about sex addiction and we literally can’t wait.

No… Agh! That’s right, it’s a film called Noah and it looks like it’s going to be awful. You’d think that Russell Crowe and a biblical tale would be a recipe for success, wouldn’t you? That’s right, you wouldn’t, because it literally sounds like the worst idea for a film ever.

Charlotte Gainsburg takes the lead role in the film as a self diagnosed nymphomaniac who recounts her many sexual experiences to a man, who just happens to have saved her after a rather tough beating.

There has already been a wealth of controversy surrounding the film, as well as a whole lot of hype. Described as a “wild, poetic drama”, these films certainly have a lot to live up to.

Set many, many years ago not long after the bible began, Noah tells the tale of a period in history when God got very angry at mankind. So angry in fact that he decided to kill them all and all the animals too. As we know, though, God is merciful so he asked Noah to build an arc and take himself, his wife and two of every animal on earth to salvation, whilst God flooded the rest of the planet.

I have little more to say about this film. Watch it if you must, but, seriously, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The Grand Budapest Hotel Release date: 7th March 2014 Josh O’Hara Directed by Wes Anderson and staring Ralph Fiennes as a hotel concierge who sets out to recover a stolen, priceless renaissance painting with his lobby boy friend. Their hunt leads them to a battle for a substantial family fortune; the film is set in a Europe experiencing a period of transition between the wars.

If the past collaborations of Wes Anderson and Bill Murray are anything to go by, then we are in for a treat with this comedy drama. The weird and wonderful quest that Steve Zissou and his crew take us on in the 2004 release, ‘Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’ allows me to think that this latest production has the potential to produce an even greater spectacle.

With the BAFTA award winning Ralph Fiennes playing the lead role of Gustave.

H, and the star studded supporting cast including Jeff Goldblum, Angela Lansbury, Jude Law, Harvey Keitel, Owen Wilson and as mentioned, the legendary Bill Murray, we can look forward to some inspired performances.

The striking colours of the luxurious and elaborate set provide a grand, artistic spectacle in itself. The set is not too dissimilar to that of the colourfully stylised Prada Candy commercial that Wes Anderson also directed. So with the artistic tableau and the enthralling storyline, this release is surely worth a trip to the flicks.

Cancer patients and survivors living in Sheffield will be offered access to a new cancer rehab programme designed by researchers at Sheffield Hallam University.

The development of this new exercise and rehabilitation programme comes as the Western Park Hospital Cancer Charity has secured £34,000 funding. The programme is good news for survivors in the city and seeks to promote the well-being benefits of regular exercise and support in their ‘post-treatment’ months.

“In Sheffield we are fortunate to have world-class cancer facilities and clinicians such as those at Weston Park Hospital, and we are really pleased to be able to work with them to bring all relevant expertise in clinical and exercise science together. It is now vitally important that we learn how to connect our clinical and physical activity resources in the city to further support our cancer patients on the road to recovery.” Says Dr Helen Crank, Sheffield Hallam Centre for Sport and Exercise Science.

The funding will go towards the training of several exercise and rehabilitation instructors who will be based around Sheffield city and will be available for both patients and survivors in order to offer exercise consultations and personalised prescriptions, which will support their recovery.

The beds, bedside tables and storage units we make in our workshop in Sheffield. As for the pieces in the showroom, we try to buy them from UK manufacturers wherever we can. We stock candles by Melt, and our throws are from a company called Bronte; both are UK companies.

Is sustainability an important factor when selecting your products?

It is indeed yes, we are very conscious of that in determining which wood suppliers we use and we only use sustainable timbers.

The East plays a big role in your collections.

Is the mixing of western and eastern designs something that is important to you?

This is a reflection of our directors Peter and Kay, and their travels, that is where that influence has come from. We do import things from India, mainly bedding. But yes, they love mixing East and West in their design.

The trends that you have highlighted as being big for 2014 (Eco industrial, Modern Nomad, Retro Futurist) have a paradoxically element to them. Is this something we can expect to see more of in the future from interior design?

Absolutely, it is a modern take on the influence we are used to. Ethnic things have been updated, and its done in a much more subtle way, but it is still there. Yet it isn’t quite as stripped down as the minimalist thing was a few years ago. So it’s nice and easy to live with; its comfortable. But because its modern its easy to incorporate into most home. So its the best of both worlds really.

Just updating your bedding is a really easy way to update a bedroom without having to spend a lot on new large items. So new throws and new bedding is a great way to start.

What inspired you to set up a shop like in Inherited here in Sheffield?

Sheffield is where I’m from, and at the time I was wanting to open up a shop of this kind here in Sheffield, a friend had the property available; the place was ready to move in so I couldn’t really pass up the great opportunity.

What is your biggest market? Is it students, or does your brand fit a wider demographic?

The initial idea was to cater for everybody. It might be a kid coming in and buying a watch, a belt or a pair of socks; right up to middle aged men buying t-shirts. Of course students make up a certain percentage of the custom, but

there are people of all types, all ages that can find something to suit them.

The Inherited retail strategy is extremely unique and refreshingly relaxed. Do you think this has had a part to play in your success?

I used my own experience of shopping in independent boutiques across the country in creating this relaxed atmosphere. Usually with the independent boutiques you feel uncomfortable in the small surroundings and therefore obliged to buy. I have steered clear from that by making it as relaxed as possible, anybody can come in and chill, relax and have a chat. If you buy, you buy, if you don’t, you don’t, that’s it.

The Inherited Shop has a large social media presence, with well over 4k followers on Twitter and close to 10k on Instagram. In terms of marketing strategy, how important is this form of social media in the industry?

it has to represent the shop and the brand in the best way possible, be it with the images, general information regarding the store or conversations regarding delivery times for instance, customers can just tweet me without the hassle of emailing. It is also great for customer feedback.

What does the future hold for the Inherited brand?

The ultimate goal is to have the store selling everything Inherited. We have already started branching out with iPhone chargers, iPhone cases, and one day there will be an Inherited product to serve every wardrobe department.

Recently there has also been interest from other stores wanting to stock the Inherited clothing line. Beyond that, it would be cool to open more branches of the Inherited store in the UK and Europe, maybe Paris, or somewhere in Germany.

Very, very Important. With social media you can market the brand globally, and as it has a link to the website, we now have orders from Paris, Germany, Australia, Sweden and Canada as a result. So whatever you put out on Instagram or Twitter has to be on point, and

Sheffield Shoppers Perform for ITV As we all very well know Sheffield is a talented city. This is the city that has given the world such greats as the Arctic Monkeys, the Human League and Pulp, so it’s only natural that when the chance to perform for new ITV show ‘Let Me Entertain You’ came around the people of Sheffield just couldn’t help themselves.

Last month Meadowhall shoppers were given the chance to sing along to some of their

favourite songs in the ITV pop up karaoke booth.

Each and every singer was filmed and may even make it onto the Saturday night TV show, which will launch in April.

Singers were given props and costumes to enhance their performances, which allowed them to dress up as the likes of Robbie Williams, Elvis, the Spice Girls or even Cher. Props included a very fetching Ginger Spice wig and Union Jack dress to match, an Elvis wig and gold sunglasses and even some sparkly microphones, which proved to be very popular with both male and female singers.

“We’re delighted to be hosting ITV’s Let Me Entertain You and hope to help discover some

new Yorkshire talent to sit alongside our region’s many exports!” said Alex Caley, Events Manager at Meadowhall.

Throughout the day the booth was home to a number of interesting acts, including an Elvis fanatic and a cross-dressing teenager. Our highlight of the day, though, was 16 year old Connor Bradley and his ‘interesting’ dance moves, whilst he was singing along to “If You Wanna Be My Lover” in the booth. We couldn’t help but laugh, just a little.

You can catch ‘Let Me Entertain You’ on ITV from April, where you might even get to see some familiar faces.

Connor Bradley as Ginger Spice Who would have expected to see a teenaged boy dress up as Geri Halliwell in the middle of Meadowhall? Certainly not us, but a brave 16 year old named Connor Bradley decided to take the chance to spice up his life in the Let Me Entertain You booth.

What made you want to go in the booth?

It just looked like fun.

Great! Have you ever dressed up as a lady before?

Umm… Yes. I don’t know; it’s just girls find it funny to put makeup on me and stuff.

And how did you find it in there?

I liked it, yeah. I could hear girls giggling outside, so I though people are watching, so that’s alright.

Do you like the Spice Girls then?

I don’t know who they are! I’ve heard of them before, but I don’t know who they are, no.

Nigel Harris as Elvis Elvis enthusiast, Nigel Harris, took to the booth to sing two of the King’s best-known hits. Nigel, 51, works at Halfords and first got into Elvis when he was at high school after his dad’s death.

How did you get into Elvis?

I used to go to friend’s houses and they all had Elvis collections from their dads. They used to play their dad’s record collections, so it filled a little gap.

Do you sing in your spare time then?

I do yeah. I sing in a band, we don’t do it live though, but I’ve met some famous people. I love singing, but it’s mainly either busking or singing to the elderly.

How did you find it in the Let Me Entertain You booth?

It were alright, but because of the vocals on it [the track], it put you off.

Are you excited to maybe make it on TV? Yeah I’d love to, because I look like Columbo, so that’s a little spin on it!

News Review: Butlers Balti Chic Lifestyle Magazine were invited to the upstairs restaurant opening of Butlers Balti House, inviting guests into the beautifully decorated restaurant featuring a unique neon blue ceiling and large projectors to entertain you with Asian Music. The large waiting area entices some to the bar, while the non-drinkers can relax inside the diner area.

Guests were welcomed with complimentary poppadum’s and pickle tray, adding excitement with the unusual twist to the sweet chilli.

Starters included a selection of onion bhajis; spicy and crispy, described as “one of the best food served”, seekh kebabs and chunky chicken tikka accompanied with fresh salad and lemon slices on a hot skillet of fried onions.

The main course was a buffet style. The vegetarian Aloo Saag was on first taste slightly bland but still a great choice regardless, the chicken tikka was rich and the lamb bhona cut effortlessly. The table was replenished rapidly with rice and fresh naans, partnering the buffet choices perfectly. The price of drinks have been noted as cheap and reasonable.

The staff couldn’t be faulted, staying friendly and helpful all night, accommodating the vast amount of guests present. Saj, the owner was

Hou Mei: Frog's Legs and Soy Sauce around taking much interest and running things smoothly. The night was run faultlessly, with the restaurant downstairs also being open for regular guests, while upstairs held the VIP’s for the launch.

Butlers Balti House would be highly recommended for small functions or parties as it caters for a young and old mix, providing everything you would need for that occasion.

The atmosphere remained great throughout the night. We would definitely be going back again. As compliments of Saj, we were able to take some fresh food home to carry on the experience a bit longer.

We Are the Champs, No Time for Losers!

On entering the restaurant we were seen to our seats by a host of very friendly staff and then promptly presented with three different menus from which to choose, whilst we supped on jasmine Chinese tea. The first was the Hou Mei Dim Sum enu, from which we chose an array of dishes including beef cheung fun, king prawn cheung fun, pork meat balls, char siu pork buns and mini glutinous rice, at the staff’s recommendation. I was most surprised by the char siu pork, marinated pork in a sweet rice ball, as they were simultaneously sweet and delicious, even more so when dipped in Chinese chili sauce.

We then ordered something that I never thought I would eat. The second menu, the Claypot Menu, was filled with a range of traditional delicacies such as sampan congee, crab congee and rice with cured meat. However, we took the opportunity to try something a bit different and swiftly opted for the rice with frog meat and chicken. The claypot dishes are very reasonable at just £8, meaning that if you are feeling adventurous you can try frog’s legs right here in Sheffield for under a tenner.

The claypot dish arrived, as you may imagine, in a pot made of clay. On a bed of seasoned rice and soy sauce were perfectly cooked chicken pieces and on the bone frog’s legs. The rumours are true, ladies and gentlemen, frog’s legs taste like chicken wings, only far more succulent.

Once you try them you will not go back.

Hidden within the gamblers’ palace that is Genting Club is a rare and intriguing find; an authentic Chinese restaurant that serves both traditional dishes and westernized style food. Hou Mei, which has recently come under new management, is a delightfully decorated authentic Chinese restaurant located in the heart of the ever-popular Genting Club.

With its quirky interior, friendly staff and deals on food and drinks, it would be hard for the opening of Champs not to have been a hit.

Their opening night was a huge success, with VIP’s receiving a free drink and a selection of food upon arrival. It quickly filled up with people checking out the new look and enjoying the buzzing atmosphere.

The new bar, located in Hillsborough, offers the same great atmosphere, drinks offers and sports as their partner on Ecclesall Road. On the site of the former Yewtree Pub, Champs has opened with a fresh new look in the hope of attracting a good crowd of regulars from the local area.

The bar is already proving popular with local residents from the area, with a crowd gathering every night of the week for food and drinks.

Weekends are their busiest times with Friday and Saturday night revelers using it as their first stop for a night out, or staying to enjoy the range of drinks on offer all night.

For less adventurous diners Hou Mei also offer a westernized three course set menu, boasting English Chinese favourites as chicken in satay sauce, sweet and sour roast pork and spring rolls. The dessert element of this menu offers diners the choice of ice cream or tea or coffee.

I opted to try some vanilla ice cream to finish off my experience, which was the ideal end to a lovely evening. The three course menu is just £10.99 per person, a bargain given the wildly generous portion sizes at Hou Mei, and if you spend longer than an hour in Genting Club you even get your parking for free!

This month the expert sign-fitters at We Are Chic Ltd. embarked on the epic job of installing huge contravision signs to each and every window of the new restaurant.

Managers at the brand new Marco’s New York Italian, which is located within the Hampton by Hilton, made the highly commendable, landmark decision to employ the efforts of a local media business in both designing and fitting their unique window signage.

New to Sheffield’s ever-expanding repertoire of restaurants and hotels is the recently opened Hampton by Hilton. The brand new hotel is situated in the heart of the bustling Steel City, on West Bar. The hotel itself boasts 142 exquisite and reasonably priced rooms, which offer people visiting the city a great value and extremely comfortably stay in a prime city location.

The building itself is the former location of West Bar Police Station and this is something, which the management staff members at Hampton

Supercar Review:

Lotus Exige S Marc Cooper

There is no driving experience quite like that of driving a Lotus. Something about the way the car handles just feels different. Once seated, in a very low seat we might add, in the car it becomes evident that you are truly inside a supercar.

The Lotus Exige S, a car developed by drivers for drivers, offers a unique and thrilling experience akin to that of driving an actual racecar. The 345 hp supercharged V6 engine packs a whole lot of power, meaning that drivers are in for something of a ride when driving this car. This is certainly not for the weak of mind or the weak of stomach. To drive this supercar you have to be ready for an intense and fast ride.

If I had over £35,000 I would happily buy the 2.0 TFSI quattro S line version of the Audi Q5.

You see, the styling of the Q5, with its coupe-like roof line and wrap-around tailgate, has been subtly refreshed. The design of the headlights has been changed, and the sparkling xenon units are now framed by new-look LED daytime running lights that form a continuous band surrounding more of the lens.

Inside, the Audi Q5 is pure understated refinement. The controls are trimmed in chrome, and the narrow panels of the centre console are finished in high-gloss black.

The hi-tech central media component, MMI navigation plus, has very few buttons, so you don’t need a degree in Rocket Science to work out how to use it. Other touches such as heated seats, air conditioning and a multifunction steering wheel make the Q5 a dream to drive.

The car is as solidly made as an oak table and yet seems as light as a feather. There’s a reason for this: the bonnet and tailgate are crafted from aluminium, while the car’s structural elements integrate ultra-high-strength steels; they reduce weight and improve crash safety. The result is that the Q5 handles like an executive saloon and takes off like a bat out of hell when you dab the accelerator. Indeed, the performance totally matches the looks of this Germanic road warrior: top speed is 138mph and the 0-62mph sprint is done in a satisfying 7.1 seconds.

Another explanation for this awesome performance is the updated Q5’s TFSI petrol engine, which combines direct fuel injection, while the eight-speed tiptronic automatic

powers the 2.0 TFSI Quattro up the cogs effortlessly. The chassis of the latest Audi Q5 also adds a great dollop of refinement and comfort, thanks to changes to the spring, shock absorber and anti-roll bar settings. The new power steering system gives you a better feel for the road too.

The Q5 driving experience is further enhanced when the optional Audi drive select system is specified. Audi drive select lets you vary the operating characteristics of the throttle pedal, the shift points of the automatic transmission, the degree of power steering assistance and the operation of the automatic air conditioning system via four modes, including an efficiency mode. In addition, three optional components can also be controlled by the Audi drive select system if they are fitted. These include adaptive cruise control, damper control and dynamic steering. During higher speed cornering, it compensates for understeer and oversteer by intervening with slight steering pulses.

I’m not saying you’ll ever get sick of driving the Q5, but when you’ve had enough of all that commuting to work and driving the kids to school malarkey, the Audi will thrill you off road.

It may look a bit bling but it actually performs well on rugged terrain. Its maximum climbing angle is 31 degrees and its approach and departure angles are each 25 degrees.

And you won’t rip anything off the Q5’s underbelly because the vehicle’s ground clearance measures 20 cm.

This is truly a motor for everyone – but you’ll have to have a decent bank balance, or a boss who’s nice enough to put this on the company car list to drive one.

Bakka, known as the “God of Water” in his village knows how to find water with his mystic dowsing rods, being the only hope for everyone. Kim turns to Bakka for help, but they both begin to realise there might not be enough water for both the people and the birds. A question of who’s life is more important becomes the focal point.

This follows dramatic and heartfelt true events. Lakshmi is a story of amazing courage and heroism. A 13 year old girl is kidnapped and brutally sold into prostitution. They happily go about their lives, knowing what they’ve got is just friends with benefits. Until, an innocent, young, fresh-faced girl comes from India to study in London and decides to live as a housemate with the night life loving girl. The two girls are worlds apart.

She even wears an Indian suit daily while the other walks around in her guy’s t-shirt and skimpy hot pants with a tonne of makeup.

As expected, the guy gets bored of this ‘side chick’ and starts to fall in love with the sweet, innocent Indian, ‘wife material’.

While the club-loving chick isn’t fazed initially, she slowly begins falling in love with the guy too. Oh, the tragedy.

An over-the-top film director takes his enthusiastic crew to a farmhouse in an actual haunted location on the outskirts of Mumbai to film an erotica-horror. The director casts the famous adult film entertainer, Sunny Leone to play the lead, Ragini. Being in a haunted location, ends up leading to creepy and menacing incidents.

News Wedding Show at Double Tree Wedding season is in full bloom and with it comes a whole host of shows and events to whet your appetites. The latest event took place at the Double Tree on Saturday 8th March and was organised by Nadia from NK Exhibitions.

On entering the event guests were privy to a wide range of carriages and Lamborghinis. This gave guests a good chance to browse their potential wedding cars (or carriages) and even make bookings then and there for their event.

The event was a huge success boasting a wide variety of stalls, all of which were of the highest standards. The stalls were spread throughout the main room around the centrepiece, the lavish catwalk, which was to later host a show, boasting some of the best bridal fashion of the moment. Stalls included Janan, Pure Threading, Zara Bridal, Orchid Hair, along with stalls offering jewellery , cakes, mehndi, beauty and even fitness products.

There was also a showcase catwalk at the centre of the event, displaying the latest bridal and groom wear along with contemporary accessories by various designers. Soon came the event that we were all waiting for, the live catwalk itself. Maysa Boutique created the clothes for the catwalk, all of which were superb and even regal looking. There was also clothing from the likes of Janan and Kiran’s Boutique.

“I did the stand modeling for Janan, which was a first experience for me and was very exciting as Janan is loved by many and has a great collection of designer clothing.” says Sameena Khan, one of the event models. “I modeled the Needlez outfit. The stand was different and attractive and it was great working with Aftab Ahmed and his assistant, Romanah Shah. They were very informative of how they would like me to promote their business and I am very pleased to say that Janan sold up to nine outfits at the event. Hina Mirza collection being the most popular amongst the crowd.”

Chino’s, on London Road, has often been the end destination of an evening out on the town.

The takeaway famously offered two pieces of chicken and fries for just £2.50 and was known for its cheap meal deals, however these low prices came at an even greater cost to their customers, hygiene.

Throughout the event various genres of music were played including music from dhol players from Apna Sounds and various DJs showcasing wedding sets they offer. The experts at Moonlight Photography and Elite Photography took a selection of photographs by way of promotion for the event itself.

At the beginning of March Chino’s was served a hygiene emergency prohibition order at Sheffield’s Magistrates’ Court, which came following an application from Sheffield Council’s environmental health department. But what was the reason for this sudden move? Simple, the takeaway was infested by some little furry friends, mice.

The owner of Chino’s, Balal Fazal, accepted this prohibition and did not object. He was said to have ‘fully co-operated’ with environmental health officers throughout the process. The takeaway will be allowed to reopen once the infestation has been sufficiently dealt with by pest control, however the takeaway’s reputation is now tarnished beyond repair and, of course, this whole mess is likely to have a knock on effect on Chino’s’ business.

An Evening in Aid of Orphans Raises Over £6,000 Last month the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel hosted a very special nightlong event in aid of orphans. The event was organised by Ambreen Besharat to raise money for the Islamic Relief One-to-One Orphans Sponsorship Programme.

The night involved a variety of entertainment and culinary delights and began with a Quran recital, followed by a poetry reading from Amerah Saleh, Voice of the Poets.

This was shortly followed by a multicultural catwalk showcasing new collections including, the Arabic Collection by Al Hayaa (Manchester), Indian/ Pakistani Collection by Neelam Creations and the African (Somali) Collection by Catty Diraac.

Guests were treated to a delicious three course meal of Indian cuisine, whilst enjoying the entertainment and marveling at the style on show.

What really stuck out about the variety of apparel being showcased was the diverse nature of the pieces; each piece signified cultural diversity in its own unique way. Sabah (Z Bridal

Sheffield), Nagina, Sham and Nayab provided makeup and styling for the catwalk as each model was immaculate, whilst Uswah provided mehndi art. There was also a variety of stall holders who came down to support the event and help raise money from various locations, such as Croydon, Middleborough, Manchester and Sheffield.

Shockingly, before this Ambreen had only ever organised one other event, which just so happened to be her sister’s wedding. Despite being something of a novice in the event planning world, the event was a huge success raising over £6,000 for charity.

Also my friends Naheed, Anisa, Fatimah and Hafsa for all their help”, Taf (Chandni), who both helped and donated towards the cause, Al – Hayaa, Catty Diraac and Neelam Creations, who allowed their clothes to be showcased during the evening, the people at Islamic Relief, especially Zia, Atique, Sarah and the volunteers, the makeup artists, Squibble Creative Design, who designed the event’s promotional material, Pure Islamic Art, for the canvases, Junoon Boutique, for the khameez (top), Unique Creations by Shaheena Ahmed for the jewellery box and decorative candle, Asad Patel for the two tier chocolate cake, Bab-eIslam for the canvas, Asma, for the cupcakes, Roomstyle for the chair and Karachi Stores for the jewellery which was auctioned, Wiam Saad Photography, Sabah, who came down from Manchester to host this event and Amerah Saleh (Voice of the Poets), and everyone who attended the event and made the evening possible.

“Ever since I can remember I have wanted to help orphans by opening an orphanage. Time after time I have dreamt about this but this is a big dream and I pray Allah (swt) allows me one day to fulfil this dream. I am very passionate about helping orphans and I hope one day I will be able to make a difference in their lives.” says Ambreen.

Asian Cuisine: Arooj After a long day at work what you really need is a platter of Asian delicacies to cheer you up.

Luckily at Arooj you don’t have to settle for just one measly dish, instead you can take your pick of a whole range of deliciously prepared meals.

Serving a range of both Indian and Chinese niceties, the Arooj buffet is the ideal place to unwind and fill your hungry stomach. On entering the newly refurbished restaurant we were seated at a romantic table for two and served two diet cokes. Whilst Arooj doesn’t serve its own alcohol you can bring your own if you’d like.

Next I filled my plate with some Chinese rice and chicken tikka masala (where else could you have these two diversities together?) and a side of naan. As a person was has tried a lot of tikka masala in my time I can safely say that this was one of the best ones I have ever had, not too spicy and just a little bit sweet.

We were then shown to the vast buffet and set free to do as we wish with the huge variety of food that lay before us. I opted to dive straight in some fried boti, deliciously spiced and fried chicken on the bone, for a starter, this was the ideal way to start my feast, but as soon as I’d finished I wanted more.

Finally came the best part of any meal, dessert.

My friend went for the very special ‘Arooj fruit salad’, which was the healthier of the options, whilst I opted for two scoops of ice cream, one bubblegum flavour and one strawberry, covered in blue and red sauce. Eating this I felt just like I was in an American ice cream parlor. Yum!

A Taste of History: Istanbul Mezze Grill

The cuisine of Istanbul, in this instance I’m referring to the city in Turkey, rather than the delightful Turkish restaurant on West Street, takes much of its inspiration from the food of the ancient Ottoman Empire. Over time this cuisine has evolved and transformed so as to suit modern tastes, however if you care to take the time you can trace the delicacies of this rich and varied culture right back to the thirteenth century AD. In Ottoman the Imperial Palace Chefs would work tirelessly to create intricate and tonguetingling dishes for the hierarchy of the empire.

This in itself was an incredibly difficult task, which only the best chefs could possibly attempt. Subsequently chefs from all over were brought to the palace and tested before they were hired. Chefs would be set a simple, yet surprisingly easy to get wrong, task of perfectly cooking a dish of rice. If they managed to cook the rice to it’s optimum level, they would be rewarded and hired as a fulltime chef within the palace itself.

Once hired and working within the stunning Imperial Palace chefs would have to create a number of dishes intended for the Sultan himself. However, before even a crumb of food could pass between the Sultan’s lips, it would have to be tasted by the ‘Chesnidjibashi’, the imperial food taster who tested for both richness of flavour and, of course, traces of poison.

At one time these fine dishes would be only suited to members inside the palace, never having been tasted by the general public.

However, in time, the dishes and recipes used to create them trickled down to the masses

and unsurprisingly quickly became extremely popular.

Flash-forward to the modern world and it is clear to see the influences the Ottoman Empire Cuisine has had upon the contemporary cuisine of Istanbul. The dishes have been refined somewhat, but most Turkish dishes still boast traces of original Ottoman recipes. The light use of spices, along with the heavy use of rice within current dishes tell tales of times long forgotten and recipes passed down through the years.

Living in the Steel City you might think it’d be nigh impossible to taste the authentic and delicious cuisine akin to that served in the megacity that is Istanbul, however, you’d be wrong. Nestled in the heart of this northern oasis, on West Street, you will find a place where you can be transported to Turkey in mere minutes.

Aptly named Istanbul, this restaurant specialises in grills and traditional Turkish food. This place is simply a must for lovers of foreign cuisine, offering the exquisite taste of Turkey right here in the UK. With a wide range of hot and cold starters, including cacik and borek, and an enormous variety of mains, including tuvuk sote; a traditional Turkish stew and adana kofte; spicy minced lamb, Istanbul is at the forefront of fine Turkish dining. The restaurant also serves a range of Turkish wines, in case you happen to fancy a rather traditional style tipple to accompany your meal.

Style Matters at Jumaira Spice Over 300 guests attended the highly anticipated opening of Jumaira Spice in Ecclesfield. Local talents, such as boxing star, Ryan Rhodes, and Sheffield Wednesday wonder, Roger Wylde, graced the prestigious event.

The glamorous event was alive with a buzz of people, all wanting to sample some of the new cuisine and check out the restaurant’s makeover. Guests were treated to a special champagne reception on arrival, before being seated and dined, with full table service.

Ryan Rhodes had the privilege of cutting the ribbon in the official restaurant opening, which was rather fitting since he is such a big fan of the local eatery. “I live a two minute walk just up the road and I was a regular before,” said the former British and European boxing champion, “They’ve done a fantastic job. The décor’s really nice, the people are great and the food is probably a little bit too nice! I think it’s great for the area and great for the community.”

“I love Indian food and I’ve really enjoyed it. The people I’ve been here with have said it’s as good as any Indian restaurant they’ve been in.” said Roger Wylde. Jumaira Spice is one of the main sponsors on the ex-footballer’s biography, The Wylde Man of Football, and the restaurant has taken great pride in helping to support one of football’s greatest heroes.

The night itself was a massive hit, something, which can be attributed in part to its brand new makeover, which was completed by the interior design specialists at Style Matters, who have done a brilliant job in brining together Eastern and contemporary style to create a modern and beautiful environment.

“We’ve got a really great place where we offer high quality, contemporary Indian cuisine that combines the traditional – in the same way that I would eat in my house.

We’ve brought my mum’s cooking to Jumaira Spice to offer Indian cuisine at its best.” Says Abdul Ghafoor, Owner.

Moonlight and Chandni Present

Wedding Fayre One of the biggest events in Asian wedding planning took place last month. Presented by Chandni Weddings and Moonlight.me.uk, the Wedding Fayre was a huge success seeing over 30 stalls specialising in wedding gifts, fashion, accessories and more take part.

The event, which took place at the Magna Science and Adventure Centre, also saw some of the biggest names in entertainment, such as Zaf Shabir and Signature, turn out to entertain guests throughout the day.

Stalls included Khimaar, Milap Entertainment, Lipstique, Cakealicious and many more.

Guests were able to browse the wide range of wedding outlets and talk to staff, whilst being entertained by a variety of shows. Guests who felt particularly charitable were also able to buy a rose for the small price of £1, which went towards helping the cause in Syria.

There was also entertainment provided for children and even a bouncy castle to keep them contented, whilst their parents had the opportunity to shop till they dropped.

Excitingly supermodel Zaf Shabir took the role of Creative Director of this year’s show.

Over his career as a fashionista Zaf has

secured a name for himself within both the Asian and mainstream fashion industry, where he is renowned for his creative and diverse collections.

Zaf, who is originally from Sheffield, begun his professional career when he became a fashion buyer for some of the UK’s leading retailers.

Since then he has risen to fame for his style and has had the privilege of collaborating with big fashion names, such as Vogue, Wella, Toni & Guy, London Fashion Week and even Dazed and Confused.

Within the last two years Zaf has further developed his career by moving into the creative director field and taking on a number of projects, which have allowed him to flex his creative muscles further still managing models, photo shoots, choreography and fashion shows. At the Wedding Fayre guests were lucky enough to witness a fashion show featuring the 2014 Wedding Collection, which was organised by none other than Zaf himself.

The duo were runners up in the 2008 final of Britain’s Got Talent, which had a record breaking 19 million viewers. Since then Signature have made a name for themselves in the music industry as innovative and humorous performers. At the Wedding Fayre Signature performed their Michael Jackson tribute routine mixed with some traditional Asian dancing.

Khiza and Soni-J also made an appearance and stayed to sing a medley of classic hits from their careers. Soni J is a UK born Pakistani Punjabi singer from the wonderful city of Birmingham.

He has been working with acclaimed music producer, Khiza, over the past three years.

The pair have worked together on a number of projects and have built quite the working relationship. Their performance at the Wedding Fayre caused quite a stir, with old and new fans coming out to see the performance.

The event was such a success that there are already plans to have a 2015 Wedding Fayre next year, so watch this space!

The entertainment throughout the day was nothing short of brilliant. The highlight, though, had to be Britain’s Got Talent stars Signature; a dance duo made up by Suleman Mirza and Mashu Singh.

Interview SHABIR HUSSAIN ON EXTENDING HIS EMPIRE You’d think Shabir Hussain would be satisfied with being Chief Executive of ten restaurants across the UK, yet this driven and inspirational entrepreneur is not stopping there.

There are now over ten restaurants proudly boasting the name Akbar’s, which were named after Shabir’s dad, to whom the restaurants are also dedicated. The name itself was a brainwave, since it is know across Asia and the Middle East to mean nothing other than pure excellence.

This notion of an extremely high standard is something, which Shabir has taken into all of his restaurants.

The chain now employs more than 400 staff members and has restaurants in the likes of Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Newcastle,

Bradford and many more great cities across the UK. The restaurants have won such acclaim since the first one opened back in 1995 and Shabir himself has become something of a pillar of the community, inspiring young people to chase their dreams from an early age.

I’d achieved everything I could with that chain and everything had gone to plan, and yet I was suddenly quite bored with it.

“

His business empire came from small beginnings when, at just 18 years old, Shabir decided that he would one day start a restaurant of his own.

At the time he was himself working as a waiter, where he got his first taste of what working in a restaurant truly entailed. Not happy merely being an employee, Shabir wanted to be the boss; this goal lead him to open a small 28 seat restaurant in 1995 in the heart of Bradford. From this small and humble beginning Shabir was to build himself an empire of Asian cuisine, become a pillar of the community and an extraordinary entrepreneur.

After the huge success of his first restaurant chain, Akbar’s, Shabir has decided to branch out further still and open a brand new line of restaurants. This time Shabir has decided to 11/Shabir’s Restaurant

move away from the honourable Akbar name and go for something a little closer to him personally. The new line of restaurants will be named after none other than himself.

“Over the years I found that there was no excitement left in Akbar’s, I’d achieved everything I could with that chain and everything had gone to plan, and yet I was suddenly quite bored with it.” Explains Shabir. When we talk to him he is busy planning and arranging the opening of his new restaurant. “After thinking about things and realising that I could not push Akbar’s any further, I decided that it was time to embark on a new challenge. With everything I do I aim high and Shabir’s is an entirely new concept.” Serving authentic South Asian Cuisine, Shabir’s is set to be a huge hit with the regulars from Akbar’s, as well as branching out further and targeting a new market of clients.

In the lead up to the restaurant opening the staff at Shabir’s have been very busy engaging with potential customers through their website, Twitter and on a Facebook fan page entitled, “Shabir’s Restaurant”. Through this the staff have managed to talk directly to their client

base and even ask their opinion on events. Staff have been answering client’s queries directly on the website, where the idea of holding a special event for Doncaster Businesses has been floated. This direct engagement with their customers has proven to be a great marketing strategy for Shabir’s, since it allows customers to feel as though they have a very real and genuine connection to the restaurant and the staff before it’s even opened.

Some lucky customers were given a sneak peek of the new restaurant. On Tuesday 11th March, a hundred competition winners, who had entered a competition, run in association with Hallam FM, were invited to a very special preview night where they were able to sample some of the food that will be available after the restaurant opening. Entrants were told to visit the Hallam FM website and enter their details for a chance to win this exciting experience.

The rest of us, though, will have to wait to taste dishes of South Asian culinary excellence until the actual restaurant opening. The Grand Opening of Shabir’s Restaurant will take place on 21st March in Doncaster and staff are now taking bookings for the event, which is likely to fill up fast. Shabir hopes that this initial restaurant opening will lead to another successful chain of restaurants.
