W H AT D O E S “ C H I C A N O S P O R L A C A U S A” M E A N ? Our organization’s name represents our roots. The term “Chicano” refers to those who navigate both the Mexican and American worlds and was popularized during the Civil Rights movement, when CPLC formed. “Por La Causa” (pronounced “cow”-”saw”) translates to “for the Cause,” which at that time was combatting discrimination. Since then, we have expanded our interpretation of “Chicano” to mean anyone who believes in equal opportunity for all people, regardless of background, and “the Cause” continues to evolve, like CPLC, to meet the changing needs of the community.

HOUSING

Rural Housing Our Self-Help program helps low- to moderate-income households construct their own homes in rural areas. Founded in 1993 in Santa Cruz County, CPLC Self-Help program is targeted to families who are unable to purchase a home through conventional methods and has helped more than 250 families build and own their own homes. Families participating in a mutual self-help project perform approximately 65% of construction labor on each other’s homes under qualified supervision. Working on weekends, they perform tasks such as wall framing, installing trusses, sheetrock, installing doors and windows and flooring, insulation, painting, siding, cabinets, and countertops. The savings from the reduction in labor costs allows otherwise ineligible families to own their homes.

Research indicates that a child’s experiences during these formative years have a lasting impact on their ability to learn and succeed.

CPLC’s ECD Head Start programs provide comprehensive, developmentally appropriate early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families in safe, nurturing and supportive environments which successfully address each child’s total learning experience.

Workforce Solutions

Commercial Development

We connect job-seekers with employers.

CPLC provides a full range of commercial and mixed-use development services.

CPLC Workforce Solutions connects education with employment by partnering with employers to determine their needs and bringing together job seekers to fill open positions. This approach places clients in a position to succeed rather than filling out 50 to 100 applications for jobs that may be the wrong fit. More important, CPLC Workforce helps clients find a career, not just a job, focusing on high-growth fields such as health care and technology that will allow them to be fully self-sufficient and provide for their families. CPLC Workforce also provides training at all levels, from 1:1 and small-group GED tutoring to industry-tailored skills development. In one example of the latter, the program is currently providing English and Spanish language classes at a large corporation for entry-level employees through management to improve internal communication. These innovative practices are incredibly effective for Opportunity Youth (16–24 year-olds not working or enrolled in school). By offering services to all, CPLC Workforce successfully helps highneed populations while benefiting the community at large.

Our fully-owned for-profit subsidiary La Causa Development in Arizona and in Nevada provides professional expertise in full service real estate development from design to implementation. La Causa Development, along with CPLC subsidiaries Tiempo Inc., La Causa Construction LLC, and La Causa Realty, LLC, provides comprehensive professional expertise in design and construction, in addition to construction management, property management, and sale of completed projects, to include: retail, medical, and mixed-use development, as well as residential multi-family and single family homes. CPLC Real Estate Operations also specializes in contracting with municipalities and funding sources via federal and state-level grants. CPLC has a successful record in utilizing Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), New Market Tax Credit, funding from HUD, Economic Development Administration (EDA) and other community capital funding in order to provide affordable housing alternatives and commercial development to the communities served. Balancing mission-driven projects with a competitive edge and expertise, the real estate operations of CPLC is considered one of the top performing non-profits in the country.
