Dear Partners, Supporters, and Friends,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Urban League, I am pleased to share with you the annual report for our 2023 fiscal year
We ended the year on a strong financial footing thanks to investments by many of you in our mission. Support from corporate partners, foundations, government entities and individual donors fueled our work to help people find jobs and establish careers, become homeowners, enhance their educational experiences, strengthen their leadership skills, and grow their businesses. The standout was a transformational $6.6 million gift from philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott, which enabled the organization to retire debt and continue critical investments in technology. We also continued to be a trusted partner in providing direct services to our communities on behalf of Chicago, Cook County, and the State of Illinois.
The staff’s work to prepare job seekers and youth for the future garnered national recognition and partnerships, with President Joe Biden’s Investing in America Tour making a stop at the Chicago Urban League and the Environmental Protection Agency partnering with our Youth Services Center to launch an Environmental Justice Academy focused on teaching high school students about sustainability We also expanded the reach of our programming, offering skills training and academic enrichment in south suburban communities with high levels of unemployment and poverty.
As Board Chair, I am grateful for the commitment and dedication of the Chicago Urban League leadership team, staff and volunteer auxiliaries. I am equally thankful for the partners, donors, and supporters who enable and enhance our work. The service numbers in this report are proof points that we truly are empowering communities and changing lives. Thank you for helping to make it happen.
Sincerely,
Suzet McKinney, DrPH, MPH Chairman, Board of Directors
Dear Friends,
I am delighted to share our annual report for fiscal year 2023. From July 2022 through June 2023, we continued to adjust to post-pandemic work life, with most staff in the office three days a week and working from home two days a week. We also continued to expand our impact through programming that empowers communities and changes lives
Our 5th Annual Youth Summit was our largest to date, with more than 1,000 middle and high school students engaging in a day of hands-on entrepreneurship and STEM activities, supported by more than 100 volunteers from Chicago-area corporations. The event included a pitch competition where youth showcased their business ideas developed with support from our staff during the academic year More than 1,200 job seekers and 60 employers attended our 2023 Citywide Job Fair. Some 1,900 individuals joined us for our 63rd Annual Golden Fellowship Dinner, where we honored Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and creator of the groundbreaking 1619 Project Nikole Hannah-Jones, former Chicago Community Trust CEO and Spelman College President Dr. Helene Gayle, and President Emeritus of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Dr. Walter Massey. We also released the 2023 State of Black Chicago report and followed it with multiple discussions focused on solutions to addressing vast disparities in resources and opportunities.
Renewable energy and the environment were major themes for the Chicago Urban League this fiscal year. In July 2022, students in our Project Ready youth program conducted an experiment on pollution levels in the city’s tap water and Lake Michigan for the National Urban League’s CASE competition, where they placed 3rd out of more than 90 affiliates across the country In May 2023, our policy-focused spring SUMMIT was a daylong conference that brought together more than 250 business and civic leaders for workshops and discussions on “Equity in Clean Energy and Water.” And in June, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan visited our office to tour our solar project and learn more about our work preparing members of underserved communities for jobs in the solar energy industry.
These highlights are just a sample of the impact of our efforts throughout FY23. As you read the pages that follow, I believe you will see our mission at work. None of it would be possible without a committed Board of Directors, a dedicated staff, and assistance and collaboration from our multiple partners and funders.
Thank you for your support and interest in this important work
Sincerely,
Kelly Evans Vice President, Entrepreneurship & Economic Development
Mavis Laing Vice President & Executive Director, IMPACT Leadership Development Program
