A NOTE FROM THE CHAIR AND THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to Symphony Center—home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Symphony Center Presents, and Negaunee Music Institute. Each offer exceptional experiences throughout the season, but at this time of year there is undeniably something extra special in the air as friends and family gather in Orchestra Hall to make music part of their holiday celebrations. This December the Chicago Symphony Orchestra welcomes several distinguished guest conductors and soloists to the Amour Stage in Orchestra Hall. Michael Tilson Thomas conducts music by Brahms and Mozart, including his Piano Concerto no. 23 performed by Orion Weiss. Mikko Franck leads the CSO in Wagner’s Prelude to Tristan and Isolde, Sibelius’s Seventh Symphony, and Brahms’s Violin Concerto performed by CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn. Dvořák’s Carnival Overture, Brahms’s Fourth Symphony, and Saint-Saëns’s Third Violin Concerto, with Renaud Capuçon as soloist, comprise a program conducted by Semyon Bychkov. To conclude the month, the Chicago Symphony Chorus and four world-class soloists join Sir Andrew Davis and the CSO in three performances of Handel’s Messiah. In addition, members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra perform familiar carols and holiday songs alongside Broadway star Ashley Brown in the festive Merry, Merry Chicago! conducted by Thomas Wilkins, and Home Alone in Concert with the Jones College Preparatory High School Concert Choir led by Richard Kaufman. Other notable programming featuring Orchestra members includes the first CSO MusicNOW concert of the season, curated by Mead Composer-inResidence Jessie Montgomery on December 3; and the legendary CSO brass in its annual showcase of works written and arranged for brass ensemble on December 19. This is also a season for giving and expressing gratitude. Your generosity makes you part of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s ongoing pursuit of artistic excellence, essential educational and community programs, and lifeaffirming performances here in Chicago and around the world. Please consider supporting the CSOA by making an end-of-year gift to the Annual Fund. We send our warmest wishes for a music-filled, happy, and healthy new year and look forward to seeing you at Symphony Center.

Autumn in New York: The CSO at Carnegie Hall In October, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Emeritus for Life Riccardo Muti traveled to New York City to open the season at Carnegie Hall with two sold-out performances, following two weeks of concerts here that opened the CSO’s 133rd season. The Orchestra, which first performed at Carnegie Hall in 1898, felt right at home, having made numerous appearances at the world-famous venue over the last 125 years. The beginning of the week of October 2 was filled with travel, equipment packing and load-in at the hall, rehearsals, and brief chances to sightsee. The opening night gala concert, on October 4, featured the CSO, Muti, and guest soloist Leonidas Kavakos in Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, followed by Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition. “Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s delightful piano suite reaches its apotheosis here,” read the New York Times; “on Wednesday, Muti built a magnificent edifice out of it, with crashing cymbals, all-out brasses, and majestic strings. Using an extreme economy of gesture, he barely had to move for the players to unleash torrents of stupendous,

beautifully balanced sound.” The concert concluded with an encore performance of the Intermezzo from Giordano’s Fedora. In addition to the capacity audience, which included stars of stage and screen, many tuned to a live radio broadcast via WQXR-FM, New York’s classical music station. The next day, members of the Orchestra led master classes and related events organized by the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute. CSO trombone Michael Mulcahy and Principal Bassoon Keith Buncke worked with students from Carnegie Hall’s NY02 youth orchestra program, the Juilliard School, New England Conservatory of Music, and Juilliard pre-college program. In support of the CSO’s Carnegie performances, musicians and patrons stopped at the American Museum of Natural History for a special tour of its new wing designed by Chicago-based Studio Gang architects. For the second concert, the CSO and Riccardo Muti took listeners on a voyage to Italy, anchored by Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony and Strauss’s tone poem Aus Italien. The concert opened with American composer Philip Glass’s A L L P H OTO S BY TO D D R O S E N B E R G

The Triumph of the Octagon, a work inspired by the thirteenth-century citadel Castel del Monte. Fittingly, Glass dedicated the work, a CSO commission, to Maestro Muti, fond of the landmark since his childhood. When The Triumph of the Octagon received its world premiere during the September 28–30 concerts in Chicago, Glass could not attend. But for the New York premiere on October 5 at Carnegie Hall, Glass, a longtime Manhattanite, was there in the audience, acknowledged with ecstatic applause. In its review, the New York Times wrote of the Glass work: “The music gradually accumulated a mysterious timelessness with the shifting emphases of its time signatures and the delicate deployment of woodwind timbres.” Earlier in the review, the Times declared: “Under Muti, the Chicago Symphony is all power and finesse with no unsightly edges. . . . Orchestra’s playing, strong yet nimble, drew on reserves of unforced power and charm.” Audiences called for another encore following this performance, and the Orchestra offered the Overture to Verdi’s Giovanna d’Arco (Joan of Arc), “performed with panache and subtlety, truly highlighting the remarkable bond and level of mutual understanding between the musicians and their maestro,” according to Edward SavaSegal of Bachtrack. Jay Nordlinger wrote of the encore in New Criterion, “Wish Verdi could have heard it. Glad we did.” In January, Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra depart for their eighth European tour together, marking the Orchestra’s thirty-fifth tour to Europe, its first since 2020, and the sixty-fourth international tour in its history. Throughout the 2022–23 season, Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery mentored high school students as part of the Young Composers Initiative, a program of the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra that engages youth from across the Chicago region and empowers them to create new pieces of chamber music. In October 2022, five teens were selected as the first Young Composers Initiative participants through a competitive application process. Over the next six months, they each met periodically with Montgomery to work on new compositions in preparation for their world premieres at Symphony Center on April 24. A new group of six students has begun working with Montgomery this fall, and the program has been expanded to include eight coaching days from October through May. Participants’ compositions will premiere at Symphony Center on May 31. “Mentorship and opportunities for young people are really important values that are close and dear to my heart,” Montgomery said to the attendees of last season’s Young Composers Initiative performance, which took place before a CSO MusicNOW concert and featured members of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Following the performance of her piece Sonidos de Bolivia, Naperville North High School senior Sofia Ruiz Cordero shared some thoughts about her experience with the Young Composers Initiative. “Jessie is absolutely amazing to work with,” she said. “I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started, but I’m really glad that I did it.” “I would bring material in, and she’d help me workshop it,” Ruiz said of her sessions with Montgomery. “She’d give me new ideas, she’d give me things to consider, other things to try out, other composers to listen to for inspiration—and then, rinse, repeat. I’d go home, work on it some more, bring the new material in, and then we’d continue.” Hearing her final composition performed at Symphony Center was “amazing,” she said. “It was much better than I ever thought it would be.” All in all, Ruiz felt that the Young Composers Initiative was “a beautiful process.” Your generous support makes educational programs like the Young Composers Initiative possible. COMMENTS by Richard E. Rodda JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH Born March 21, 1685; Eisenach, Germany Died July 28, 1750; Leipzig, Germany

Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue in C Major, BWV 564 (Arranged by Fred Mills)

COMPOSED

around 1705

The magnificent Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue in C major, probably written while Bach was serving as organist at the Neukirche in Arnstadt from 1703 to 1707, is framed by two of baroque music’s least-related forms. The genre of the toccata was essentially a written-down improvisation whose history traces back to Italy almost two centuries before Bach. Its title is one of those beguilingly slippery seventeenth-century terms whose meaning is often elusive but seems to have come from the Italian word toccare (to touch). The toccata indicated a “touching” with the fingers on the keyboard to create great roulades of sound—sweeping scales, colossal harmonic progressions, dazzling figurations, and so forth— usually presented as unconnected episodes. The

fugue, on the other hand, is music’s most tightly integrated structure, growing from a single theme that threads through each of the voices and dominates the seamless piece from beginning to end. Bach brought to this marriage of musical antitheses a flying virtuosity (this work is probably similar to the test pieces he used when trying out new organs) and an unerring sense of impassioned drama. Separating the Toccata and Fugue in this tripartite composition is a deeply felt Adagio, perhaps influenced by the form and expressive idiom of the three-movement Italian concertos, which Bach began studying at that time. The arrangement for brass is by Fred Mills, a Juilliard graduate who was a founding member of the American Symphony Orchestra in New York, principal trumpet of the New York City Opera, member of Canada’s National Art Centre Orchestra and New York City Ballet Orchestra, University of Georgia faculty member, and a longtime trumpeter with the Canadian Brass.

Fantasy on Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan, Op. 2 COMPOSED

2023

World premiere

Trombonist, pedagogue, composer, and arranger Daniel Chevallier holds a bachelor’s degree in music performance from the University of North Texas, a master’s from Northwestern University, and is currently pursuing a doctorate at UNT. His teachers include Tony Baker, Christopher Davis, Randy Hawes, Timothy Higgins, Natalie Mannix, Steve Menard, Michael Mulcahy, Gail Williams, and Douglas Wright. Chevallier is committed to expanding the classical repertoire of the trombone through his own original compositions and arrangements, performing and premiering new works by other composers, and adapting for trombone such repertoire staples as the horn concertos of Glière and Strauss, Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata, and Brahms’s sonatas for cello, violin, and clarinet. He has performed in new music programs at such events as the California All-State Music Education Conference and Texas Music Educators Association Convention, including a clinic with the UNT Trombone Consortium on the pedagogical value of new works for trombone ensemble. Daniel Chevallier also performs with the North Texas Wind Symphony, Lone Star Wind Orchestra, and Las Colinas Symphony

Orchestra, maintains an active studio for trombone students, and coaches brass ensembles. “Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan” (What God Does Is Well Done) was among the most popular Lutheran hymns of Johann Sebastian Bach’s time. The text was written in 1675 by Samuel Rodigast, who taught philosophy and classical studies in Jena and Berlin; the tune has been credited to his friend Severus Gastorius, a cantor in Jena. “Was Gott tut” was among the earliest musical examples of Lutheran pietism, the personal and strongly emotional belief that was popular in Germany during the early eighteenth century. (Rodigast’s first verse ends, He is my God, though dark my road, He holds me that I shall not fall: So, to Him I give my all.) Bach wrote a chorale prelude for organ on the hymn (BWV 1116) early in his career and later included it in a half dozen cantatas. Daniel Chevallier wrote of his Fantasy on “Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan”: The music of Johann Sebastian Bach has been an inspiration for many composers through the years, myself included. This piece explores the ways in which composers have used Bach’s music (directly and indirectly) using motifs from his setting of the chorale “Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan.” My Fantasy uses styles from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries before it culminates in a statement of the chorale itself.

PABLO CASALS Born December 29, 1876; El Vendrell, Catalonia, Spain Died October 22, 1973; San Juan, Puerto Rico

O vos omnes (Arranged by Leopold Stokowski) COMPOSED

1932

Pablo Casals was universally known as one of the twentieth century’s foremost cellists, a man widely admired for his passionate stand on world affairs, and an ardent Catalonian nationalist, but he received less recognition as a talented composer. His works include a mass, an oratorio, a string quartet, songs, choral pieces, many chamber compositions, and eight motets written for the choir of Santa Maria de Montserrat, the Benedictine abbey dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia. (Stone from Montserrat—“Serrated Mountain,” because of its jagged peaks—was used in the construction of Gaudi’s stunning Sagrada Familia Basilica in Barcelona.) So highly regarded was Casals

in Montserrat as a musician, humanist, and Catalonian that a statue of him, seated and playing his cello, was erected on the abbey grounds on the centenary of his birth. Casals’s setting of “O vos omnes” (O, All You Who Pass Along the Way) was written in 1932 for the tenors and basses of the basilica’s choir and rearranged for mixed choir in 1965. The text from Lamentations 1:12—O, all you who pass along the way, behold and see if there is any sorrow like unto my sorrow—was included in the combined Roman Catholic services of Matins and Lauds that bracket daybreak on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of Holy Week during which fifteen candles, signifying the ebbing life of Christ, are extinguished one-by-one after the singing of each of the obligatory psalms and their associated responsories, such as “O vos omnes,” and the service closes in darkness. Casals’s prayerful setting is matched perfectly to the solemnity of that occasion.

JOAQUÍN TURINA Born December 9, 1882; Seville, Spain Died January 14, 1949; Madrid, Spain

Orgía from Danzas fantásticas, Op. 22 (Arranged by Javier Viceiro-Filgueira) COMPOSED

1920

With the works of Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados during the decades around the turn of the twentieth century, Spanish music emerged as an integral part of the international cultural scene. In the years before World War I, Albéniz and Granados were joined in creating a national musical style by Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Turina, who, like their older colleagues, went to Paris to study the traditional ways of music-making and to be inspired by the exciting modernities of Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, and the other important composers then making that city the most vibrant center of art and culture in Europe. Turina was especially attracted to formal academic study, and he enrolled at the

Schola Cantorum as a pupil of the eminent pedagogue and composer Vincent d’Indy. Turina returned to Spain in 1914, and he soon came to be regarded as one of the leading musical figures of his country. Though he was best known during his lifetime for his compositions, he also gained fame as a pianist and chamber music player, professor at the Madrid Conservatory, director of the performances of the Ballet Russe in Spain, music critic, and member of the Spanish Academy of Arts. The Danzas fantásticas of 1920 comprises three movements, each headed with a quotation from the Spanish poet José Más. “Orgía” (Revel), the finale, bears the legend: “The perfume of flowers is mingled with the fragrance of camomile and the bouquet of tall goblets filled with incomparable wine. From this, like an incense, the dances rise.” “Orgía” evokes the fiery, heel-stomping music of the flamenco style cante jondo (deep song).

Cindy McTee, born into a musical family, began piano studies at age six and played saxophone as a teenager. She completed her undergraduate studies in music at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma and continued her professional training by earning a master’s degree in music from Yale University and a doctorate from the University of Iowa. McTee also spent a year studying at the Higher School of Music in Kraków, Poland, with Krzysztof Penderecki, who met her when she was studying at Pacific Lutheran University and invited her to come to Poland to teach his children English. She taught at PLU in Tacoma from 1981 to 1984 and thereafter served on the faculty of the University of North Texas in Denton until her retirement in 2011 as regents professor emerita of music composition; later that year, she married noted American conductor Leonard Slatkin. McTee’s works, for both acoustic and electronic media, have been performed widely by orchestras, concert bands, and chamber ensembles across the United States and abroad; her music was included in a concert honoring Penderecki’s sixtieth birthday in Kraków in 1994. In addition to commissions from several of this country’s leading orchestras, Cindy McTee’s

distinctions include the 2008 Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Award from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, a Creative Connections Award from Meet the Composer, two awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a Composers Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. She was also winner of the 2001 Louisville Orchestra Composition Competition and in 2002 was selected to participate with the National Symphony Orchestra in Music Alive, a residency program sponsored by Meet the Composer and the League of American Orchestras. McTee wrote of Notezart, commissioned in 2016 by the Brass and Percussion Ensemble of the National Orchestra of Lyon: I very much enjoy finding a way to make various kinds of music live together. So, in this piece, you will hear twelve-tone passages along with quartal, quintal, and triadic harmony. To create unity, I use a steady pulse throughout and a strong reliance on the interval of the perfect fourth that opens the third movement from Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik—inspiration for Notezart. My “stolen” music (the work’s centerpiece) is cast in a quasi-Renaissance style—with the exception of the duet between trumpet and trombone, which is more in keeping with an eighteenth-century variation.

ANDRÉS GAOS BEREA Born March 31, 1874; La Coruña, Galicia, Spain Died March 13, 1959; Mar del Plata, Argentina

Cantos celtas from Symphony No. 2 (En las montañas de Galicia) (Arranged by Javier Viceiro-Filgueira) COMPOSED

1917

Andrés Gaos Berea was born in Spain and trained in Europe but based his career as a violinist, composer, teacher, and conductor largely in South America. His father was a dealer in musical instruments and scores in La Coruña, on the Galician coast in northwest Spain. He taught his son the violin so effectively that the provincial council offered Andrés a grant to study in Madrid when he was just eleven. His stipend was renewed three years later, enabling him to study violin and composition in Paris for a year and then in Brussels, where he was a student of the renowned Eugène Ysaÿe. Despite his excellent training, Gaos failed to gain admission to the Paris Conservatory, and in 1893 he headed to Cuba, where he gave his first public recital, then to Mexico, playing in theater orchestras for several months. In 1895 he moved to Buenos Aires and then to Montevideo, Uruguay, where he met and married the singer and violinist América Montenegro. The newlyweds performed and taught in Montevideo until moving to Buenos Aires in 1898 to teach at a music school run by Argentinean composer, pianist, and conductor Alberto Williams (which eventually became the Buenos Aires Conservatory). After Gaos and Montenegro toured Europe together in 1899, they returned to Buenos Aires. They taught and performed (in July 1904, Andrés gave the first performance in Latin America of Saint-Saëns’s Violin Concerto no. 3 under the visiting composer’s direction), started

their own conservatory, and Andrés established himself as a conductor. They lived and performed in Europe again from 1909 to 1912, after which they returned to Argentina, closed their music school, and divorced. Gaos resumed his teaching career, married a violin student of his in 1919, and in 1923 started another music school. After it closed in 1925, the family moved to the French side of the Pyrenees, which served as their base while touring Europe for the next eight years. Gaos and his family finally settled permanently in Buenos Aires in 1933, where he retired from performing to teach in a local school, and in 1935 became Argentina’s director of school music education programs, a position he held until 1948. Andrés Gaos Berea died in March 1959, and his remains were interred in the Chacarita Pantheon, Argentina’s National Cemetery. Gaos composed steadily throughout his life, though performances and publications were sporadic and rarely took place outside Buenos Aires—an opera, incidental music, two symphonies, a few descriptive orchestral compositions, recital pieces for violin, cello, and piano, songs, dances, and didactic works for violin. “Cantos celtas” (Celtic Songs), now the second movement of Gaos’s Symphony no. 2 (En las montañas de Galicia), originated in two descriptive orchestral pieces together titled Galicia that Gaos composed around 1917 in a French Impressionistic style suited to the current taste of Buenos Aires’s music lovers. He submitted both pieces to a local composition competition in 1923, and one won, but the promised performance never took place, so Gaos filed the works away. They remained unplayed and unpublished until their listing on the 1939 sheet music of his Prelude no. 2 for

piano as “symphonic scenes” with a third piece added, which was actually an orchestral passage from Gaos’s 1916 opera Amor vedado (Forbidden Love). The complete three-movement work, retitled Symphony no. 2, En las montañas de Galicia, was premiered on July 28, 1959, in Buenos Aires by the National Radio Youth Orchestra, conducted by Washington Castro, forty-two years after it was begun and four months after Andrés Gaos Berea’s death. The title of “Cantos celtas” is rooted in the history of Gaos’s home region of Galicia, the northwest corner of the Iberian Peninsula, north

of Portugal. During ancient times, large swaths of Europe, Spain, and the British Isles were inhabited by Celtic tribes who shared elements of language and culture; those in that far northwest corner of modern Spain were known to the Romans as Gallaeci. The outer sections of Gaos’s “Cantos celtas” are quiet and lyrical, with the simplicity and expressive directness of folksong; the extended central episode is animated and extrovert, and in the full three-movement symphony substitutes for a scherzo. The arrangement for brass is by Spanish conductor Javier Viceiro-Filgueira.

Suite No. 2 from The Three-Cornered Hat (Arranged by Geoffrey Boyd) COMPOSED

1917–19

The dazzling Parisian success of Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe that began in 1909 came to a jarring halt when the Guns of August tore across Belgium and France in 1914 to begin World War I. Diaghilev, Leonide Massine, and some of the company took refuge in Switzerland and Spain, while Nijinsky and others fled to America. Diaghilev arranged a season in Spain for 1917 and, always on the prowl for new talent, took the opportunity to look up a musician Stravinsky had met in Paris in 1910. Stravinsky described his Spanish colleague as “even smaller than myself and as modest and withdrawn as an oyster . . . unpityingly religious, and the shyest man I have ever met.” His name was Manuel de Falla. Falla, a meticulous worker who composed slowly, had completed only a small number of works by 1917—most notably Nights in the

Gardens of Spain, the opera La vida breve (The Brief Life), and the ballet El amor brujo (Love, the Sorcerer)—and he was little known outside his homeland. When Diaghilev and Massine introduced themselves to him in Barcelona, he took them to see a one-act farce set in the early nineteenth century about the attempted seduction of a miller’s wife by the local governor for which he had provided the music, El corregidor y la molinera (The Corregidor and the Miller’s Wife). Massine wrote that Falla’s score “seemed to us very exciting, and its blend of violence and passion was similar to much of the music of the local folk dances. Both Diaghilev and I felt that the story and the music offered us the potentials of a full-length ballet.” Falla accepted Diaghilev’s proposal to revise and extend his score for production when the war was over; The ThreeCornered Hat was staged as part of the 1919 London season of the Ballet Russe. The Three-Cornered Hat concerns a village miller and his pretty wife. The corregidor (mayor) is attracted to the miller’s wife, and she tells her husband to watch as she spurns the old NOV E M B E R– DE CE M B E R 2 0 2 3

man’s attempts at love. That evening, the village festivities are interrupted by the local constabulary, who have come to arrest the miller on a charge trumped up by the corregidor to get him out of the way. The corregidor appears as the miller is led away but falls into the millstream as he pursues the girl. She runs off in search of her husband while the corregidor removes his sodden clothes, including his three-cornered hat—symbol of his office—hangs them on a chair outside and jumps into the absent girl’s bed to ward off a chill. Meanwhile, the miller has escaped and returned home. He sees the corregidor’s discarded clothes and believes himself betrayed by his wife. Vowing to get even, he exchanges his garments for those of the official, scribbles on the wall, “The wife of the corregidor is also very pretty,” and runs off in search of his conquest. The corregidor emerges to find only the miller’s clothes. He puts them on just in time for the police, hunting their escaped prisoner, to

arrest him by mistake. The miller and his wife are happily reconciled. Falla derived two suites from the complete score for The Three-Cornered Hat. They parallel the action of the ballet but omit some of the connecting tissue. The second suite includes “The Neighbor’s Dance,” “The Miller’s Dance,” and the energetic “Final Dance.” This brass arrangement is by Australian-born Geoffrey Boyd, who played double bass in the Melbourne Symphony and the Opera Australia Orchestra. After taking advanced training at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Boyd conducted widely in Germany and England, served as music director for London’s Opera Nova, and worked extensively as an arranger and orchestrator. Richard E. Rodda, a former faculty member at Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Institute of Music, provides program notes for many American orchestras, concert series, and festivals.

He is also principal trombonist of the Australian World Orchestra, with whom he has performed under conductors Alexander Briger, Zubin Mehta, Sir Simon Rattle, and Riccardo Muti. He was a founding member of the National Brass Ensemble in 2014. Michael Mulcahy’s interest in conducting was sparked by an invitation from the West German Radio Orchestra to direct a concert of music by Arvo Pärt. He serves as director of the CSO Brass, conducts annually for the Grand Teton Musical Festival, and makes guest appearances with the Sydney Symphony, Tasmanian Symphony, New World Symphony, and the Royal Danish Orchestra. He has also served as music director for National Music Camp in Australia. Born in Sydney, Australia, Michael Mulcahy began studying trombone with his father, Jack Mulcahy, and completed his studies with Baden McCarron of the Sydney Symphony and with Geoffrey Bailey at the State Conservatorium of New South Wales. In 1987 he became a senior lecturer at the Canberra School of Music at the Australian National University. Currently, he leads the trombone studio at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music and is a visiting artist at the Australian National Academy of Music.
