NEWS ITEM OF THE WEEK First Time Available: David Stone Martin Vintage Jazz Fine Art Prints The jazz album cover illustrations of the great artist David Stone Martin are now available as limited edition fine art prints! In the world of jazz there’s one artist collected the world over who’s never played a note of music but has left an indelible mark on jazz culture as well as modern art & design. David Stone Martin was one of the most prolific and influential artists of the postwar era. With his signature hand sketched graphics in two or three primary colors he perfectly captured the energy and spontaneity of the jazz idiom and post war America. Martin’s work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian Institution. He’s won numerous awards from the Society of Illustrators and the Art Directors Clubs of New York City, Boston and Detroit. DSM was the subject of a Jazz at Lincoln Center retrospective in 2010, Jazz at First Sight: The Art of David Stone Martin. His diverse pieces included illustrations for books and numerous posters, billboards and advertisements for film, television and the theater, including the Lincoln Center Repertory Theater productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s. Martin’s portraits for Time Magazine covers included Robert F. Kennedy, Eugene McCarthy, Mao Zedong and George C. Wallace. Starting in the mid 1940’s, DSM began working with Norman Granz, the great jazz empersario, designing album covers for his various record labels. Martin did nearly all the covers for the Asch, Clef. Norgran and Jazz at the Philharmonic labels of the 1940’s and 1950’s. These were mostly done in the distinctive heavy black-ink lines he’s renowned for. And of course the subjects were equally amazing: Stan Getz, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington and many other jazz giants. Amy Jill, with her silky voice unveils an unusually
intimate world of sound. Icons Marilyn Monroe, Nicole Kidman, Diana Krall come to mind - even a touch of Jessica Rabbit (in 3-D.) Amy’s love affair with music began at her family’s central Illinois farm. At a young age, Amy perused her parents’ eclectic record collection, learning big band, Broadway, classical and country music. Corralling the cats for an audience, she performed an ever changing musical show. Most intrigued by composers from the American Songbook and vocalists, such as Julie Andrews and Judy Garland, it is no surprise Amy’s musical style evolved into jazz. Beginning her performing career in St. Louis, Amy eventually settled in the Chicago area. She most recently appeared at The Art Institute, Katerina’s and Cheney Mansion in Oak Park.

Andrew Distel is a vocalist and trumpet player.
He was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where he attended the prestigious College Conservatory of Music studying both trumpet and voice. He moved to Chicago to continue his education, receiving a graduate degree in jazz voice from Roosevelt University. He has played at such notable venues as: The Green Mill, The Pump Room, The Blue Wisp Jazz Club, Green Dolphin Street, and Pops For Champagne. His quartet plays regularly-every Friday and Saturday night at The Pump Room-featuring Pete Benson, Hyosub Kim, and George Fludas.

The classically trained vocalist has performed jazz, pop, and rhythm and blues in the U.S. and abroad. had a love of the arts and began acting, singing, and songwriting at an early age, but became more involved as a more behind-the-scenes player— marketing, directing, producing, films and music artists. In music, Charbonier has developed and produced music and music videos for artists from various genres. In cinema, his involvement varies from the full-scale production of independent feature films to programming and organizing film festivals all over the United States.

Jim Sellers is a Chicago based jazz pianist, having
been lucky enough to have performed with some great musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Frank Catalano, Spider Saloff, Luba Mason, Ava Logan, Art Davis, Bill Yancey and many others. Jim’s interest in jazz began in grade school when he discovered Daddio Daley’s radio program on what was then WXFM. With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

Endres, music played a bit of a different
role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

Marc Pompe began performing around Rush
Street as a solo piano/vocal in the mid fiftys and was influenced by the music of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. Vocal influences include Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McCrae and Jon Hendricks. In 1965, Marc left Chicago to work out of New York and played at Jilly’s (NYC), Eddie’s Backstreet in St. Thomas, The Gaslight Club in Toronto and Mother’s Lounge in Pittsburgh. After 40 years of performing, 1997 saw the release of Marc’s first CD, Nobody Else But Me, on Kopaesthetics Records. Since then, Marc has released 4 additional albums.

Roger L. Harris is a pianist residing in Chicago,
IL. His musical talents were evident at an early age. His father, Leo Harris, is the cellist that founded the South Side Family Chamber Orchestra and encouraged Roger to embrace his gift. Roger is currently the Conductor Emeritus of that orchestra. Sam Fazio made his return to the Chicago music scene
in 2009. Over the years, Sam has performed in nightclubs throughout Chicago and Las Vegas. Sam’s repertoire includes a unique mix of American standards, swing tunes and pop classics. His heartfelt interpretations bring new life to the standards and showcase his soulful, yet classic style. Sam performs at a variety of venues and events around the Chicagoland area, including weekly performances at the Drake Hotel.

Shawn Maxwell has the urge—a quality

Each harmony he creates is purposeful in form as well as function. After starting his professional career touring Internationally, across the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Maxwell returned home to conquer the Windy City. With equal parts genius and toil, Maxwell has become one the preeminent performers in the Chicago jazz landscape. His multi-instrumental talents have been lauded by fellow musicians and critics alike.

Stacy McMichael is one of the premier bassists
in Chicago today. Equally proficient on upright bass and electric bass, Stacy performs comfortably within a broad range of genres and styles. As an active professional bassist, Ms. McMichael has played with hundreds of artists in countless settings. Ms. McMichael received her Masters degree (Jazz Bass performance & pedagogy) from the prestigious University of Miami Jazz School and her Bachelors degree (Double Bass performance) from the University of Nebraska - Omaha. Ms. McMichael currently holds a faculty position as Adjunct Professor of Bass at Olivet Nazarene University.

During her two-year tenure she performed for celebrities and European royalty, as well as many a love struck couple out to make a memorable night. Since that time, Stephanie has been featured at the Chicago area’s most notable jazz clubs, including Andy’s, The Green Mill, Pete Millers, Pops for Champagne, as well as many others.

Steven Hashimoto has been a highly visible part of
Chicago’s jazz scene since 1976, when he founded the band Mothra (which is still in existence, with a CD on AsianImprov Records). He has also anchored the late-night jam sessions at The Green Mill on Fridays for almost 16 years. He has recorded with many local bands, and appeared at almost every jazz venue in Chicago. He has also appeared at The Chicago Jazz Festival, Taste of Chicago, ChicagoFest, Chicago’s Asian American Jazz Festival, as well as festivals and concert venues nationwide.
