FC DALLAS vs CHICAGO FIRE TOYOTA STADIUM, Frisco, Texas Oct. 12, 2013 (WEEK 33, MLS Game #303) 7:30 p.m. CT (TWCSN-TX; My50 Chi) FC Dallas will be aiming to keep their slim playoff hopes alive against a Chicago Fire side desperate for a win to pull themselves back into a postseason position when the clubs meet in the Brimstone Cup match on Saturday evening at Toyota Stadium. FCD must win to remain in contention for a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs, following their 1-1 draw at Real Salt Lake last weekend. The Fire are two points out of the top five in the Eastern Conference, following their 3-0 win at D.C. United last week. REFEREE: Kevin Stott. FCD is in eighth place in the Western Conference with 41 points from 31 matches. LAST MATCH  Real were a man down after just 17 minutes when Abdoulie Mansally was sent off by referee Hilario Grajeda after a late, hard tackle on Jackson.  But the home side was able to take the lead in the 60th minute when Alvaro Saborío got on the end of a long, bouncing ball cleared toward the Dallas area, held off three Dallas defenders and won just enough space to fire a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Chris Seitz.  But the visitors pulled even 12 minutes later. Substitute Je-Vaughn Watson raced down the left wing and hit a ball across the middle that goalkeeper Nick Rimando could only parry to Kenny Cooper, who took one touch before poking it into the back of the net.  FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman made four changes to the team that dropped a 4-2 decision to the Columbus Crew at Toyota Stadium. Chris Seitz came in between the posts for Raul Fernandez, Stephen Keel andJair Benitez started in the back four for Matt Hedges and Zach Loyd, and Michel came into the midfield for Erick.  FC DALLAS (4-2-3-1): Chris Seitz - Kellyn Acosta, George John, Stephen Keel, Jair Benitez - Andrew Jacobson, Michel (Peter Luccin 61) - Jackson, Mauro Diaz (Kenny Cooper 46), Fabian Castillo (Je-Vaughn Watson 70) - Blas Perez. TEAM NEWS  While FC Dallas put an end to their three-game losing streak, they did see their overall winless run extended to four games. FCD has won two league matches since the start of June.

“We needed three points. We don’t need ties, we need wins. We’re so disappointed, so frustrated right now because Salt Lake gave us the chance to get those three points and we didn’t capitalize on it,” FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman said. Kenny Cooper netted his fourth goal of the season, his first in league play since May 18. He was making his ninth consecutive substitute appearance; his 45-minute shift was his longest action since his last start, July 20 vs. Montreal. “We felt that we needed a second striker. We needed two strikers we didn’t feel like at the end of the first half we were putting enough pressure in the box so we put Kenny Cooper in and I think Kenny scored the goal,” Hyndman said. Added Cooper: “We’re all extremely hungry to get in there with only three points. We know we have to get points. I think you’re going to see a really determined squad over these next couple games and finally get some points.” Chris Seitz was making his fifth start of the season in goal for FC Dallas, with Raúl Fernández out. In games where Seitz has deputized, FCD has three wins and two draws. “We’ve got to just continue to get better as a unit from all people, we need to work well as a team. We don’t really have any chances we need to go out there and create our own. It’s going to be a fight for the next three games,” Seitz said. Peter Luccin made his FCD and MLS debut, coming on for the final half-hour in the midfield, after being reinstated from the injured reserve list. Je-Vaughn Watson also made his first appearance in three matches, coming on as a substitute for the final 20 minutes. “We brought Peter on to give us some direction in the midfield … not lose as many balls. We brought JeVaughn on and the first time he touched the ball, he took it 70 yards and put a great ball across,” said Hyndman. “So I think we needed to score in the first half and it didn’t happen.”

CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire won for the first time in three matches, strolling to a 3-0 victory against D.C. United at RFK Stadium. The Fire are in sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 43 points from 31 matches. LAST MATCH  The Fire opened the scoring in the 24th minute. On the near side of the 18-yard box, Juan Luis Anangonó beat James Riley and then beat Daniel Woolard with a nimble cutback before slipping the ball to Larentowicz, who knocked it past United goalkeeper Joe Willis from a tight angle.  Two minutes later, the Fire doubled the margin when center back Bakary Soumare blasted home a loose ball after Willis was drawn out of the goalmouth by a long free kick.  Substitute Quincy Amarikwa iced the result with a diving header off a nifty cross from Dilly Duka in the 89th minute.  Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson made eight saves on the evening to record his fifth clean sheet of the year.  Fire head coach Frank Klopas made two changes to the team that reached a 2-2 draw with the Montréal Impact at Toyota Park. Bakary Soumare returned from suspension in place of Logan Pause, and Chris Rolfe started out wide for Dilly Duka.  CHICAGO FIRE (4-4-2): Sean Johnson - Jalil Anibaba, Bakary Soumare, Austin Berry, Gonzalo Segares Patrick Nyarko (Alex 61), Arevalo Rios, Jeff Larentowicz, Chris Rolfe (Dilly Duka 71) - Mike Magee, Juan Luis Anangono (Quincy Amarikwa 80). TEAM NEWS  The United match was the first of three road matches over the final four games of the season for the Fire. After the win, they are two points behind Philadelphia for fifth place in the Eastern Conference and final playoff position.  “We knew that this was a big game for us. We needed to get points. We’re playing four games—three on the road – and we need to find points to be there,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “It’s never easy. But it’s great that we got the three points here and you can watch the games a little bit more relaxed.”  Said defender Bakary Soumare: “We know it's going to be a battle. These last three games are going to be huge for us. I'm excited, man. It's a fantastic scenario, and we're going to fight to the end. Most of the guys on this team are fighters. We think that come October 27, we'll be right there with everybody else.”  Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson recorded his first shutout since Aug. 23 in the win, and just his second in league play since a 2-0 blanking of United on June 2.  “He was massive. Sean is just unbelievable,” Soumare said. “Week in and week out, he's a kid that works really, really hard. It's no wonder why he's in contention to be a U.S. national team goalkeeper. I don't say that about every one of my teammates. He's one of the best goalkeepers in the league.”

“We were smart, we kept our shape, we didn’t get stretched out knowing that they had to push. I think when you keep a clean sheet and you put your chances away, you put yourself in a good position to win,” said Klopas. “We knew it was going to be a difficult match.” Soumare recorded his first goal of the season, his first in five seasons and 86 league appearances in Major League Soccer. Jeff Larentowicz scored his second goal of the season, his first since April 20. Quincy Amarikwa scored his second goal of the season, his first since May 25, when he scored a late equalizer as a substitute vs. Real Salt Lake. Juan Luis Anangono recorded his first MLS assist, to go with his first MLS goal two weeks earlier. “With Juan and Quincy coming in with their ability and attitude, the movement off the ball creates a lot of space for our midfield players. And Mike [Magee] is smart to find those guys. I think Jeff [Larentowicz] did a very good job joining in late and making late runs,” Klopas said. “A lot of times goals follow goals. When you’re on the road and get chances, you got to put them away and you need to be able to defend well and we did.”

FC DALLAS INJURY REPORT IR – U. Ihemelu (D) concussion. DL – Eric Hassli (F) lower back strain. OUT – L. Woodberry (right knee injury). FC DALLAS’ PLAYOFF PICTURE Currently in eighth place of the Western Conference standings, FC Dallas (10‐ 10‐11, 41 points) has three games remaining in the 2013 MLS Regular Season to move into fifth position and into playoff contention. FC Dallas is chasing Colorado (13‐9‐9, 48 points) and the L.A. Galaxy (14‐11‐6, 48 points). IF FC DALLAS WINS OUT AND FINISHES WITH 50 POINTS (13 WINS)… TO PASS PORTLAND, the Timbers would have to lose all remaining matches. * If Portland ties any of its three remaining matches, FC Dallas cannot catch them (51 points). TO PASS COLORADO, the Rapids would have to lose or tie both remaining matches. * If FC Dallas and Colorado both finish with 50 points, the first tiebreaker is wins (both teams would have 13). * The second tie‐breaker is goals for (FC Dallas currently is ahead, 43 to 42). TO PASS LA, the Galaxy would have to lose all of its remaining matches. * If LA ties all of its remaining matches, Dallas cannot catch them (51 points). * If LA ties two matches and loses one, FC Dallas would lose via tiebreaker to the Galaxy based on number of wins (LA 14 – DAL 13). SHOULD ONE OF THE TEAMS ABOVE DROP, FC DALLAS STILL NEEDS… TO PASS VANCOUVER, Whitecaps FC would have to lose one of its two remaining matches (finishing with 48 points). * If Vancouver wins out, FC Dallas cannot catch them (51 points). TO PASS SAN JOSE, the Earthquakes cannot win another game (one more would put them at 50 points with a tiebreaker of 14 wins). * Two ties would allow FC Dallas to pass San Jose. COOPER VS FIRE FC Dallas forward Kenny Cooper found the back of the net for the fourth time this season in a 1‐1 draw against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 5. Now FC Dallas’ second‐leading scorer (behind Blas Perez’s 11) will be looking to score in back‐to‐back matches for FC Dallas for the first time since 5/31/09 – 6/7/09. May 31, 2009 was Cooper’s last match against the Fire while playing for FC Dallas. The striker has six goals in 544 minutes of action (.993 goals per 90 minutes) versus Chicago, while playing for Dallas. In his five games against the Fire in which he was not playing for Dallas, Cooper has not scored. BENITEZ SHINES IN RETURN Out of the lineup for the first time in five games versus Columbus on Sept. 29, Jair Benitez reclaimed his spot at left back in last week’s draw against Real Salt Lake. Dallas’ left back led the way with 54 completed passes, 14 more than RSL’s Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales (both had 40) for the game‐high. Benitez also topped Morales’ 88 actions by a large margin (+43). The Colombian had 131 actions by the final whistle.

28 LINEUPS THROUGH 31 MATCHES Schellas Hyndman has rolled out a unique lineup in 28 of the team’s 31 MLS matches thus far this season. The three matches in which Hyndman was able to feature the same 11 came in consecutive matches from April 13 to April 27. In three matches, FC Dallas beat the LA Galaxy, 1‐0, and Whitecaps FC, 2‐ 0, before drawing Vancouver, 2‐2, in Canada. MLS ELITE GOALSCORER: BLAS PEREZ Blas Perez scored five goals and had two assists in his last seven starts for FC Dallas. The Panamanian is also having his best season in MLS with 11 goals. Perez surpassed his goal total from the 2012 season when he scored in the th 19 minute of FC Dallas’ 2‐2 draw against San Jose on 8/24. Despite missing eight games this season due to international call‐ups and suspensions, Perez eclipsed his minutes‐played total of 1705 from last season in the second minute of Dallas’ 4‐2 loss against Columbus on 9/29. FC Dallas will be without its top goal scorer against Chicago on Oct. 12. Perez rejoined the Panamanian National Team following Dallas’ 1‐1 draw against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 5. Panama faces Mexico at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico in a pivotal CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying match on Friday, Oct. 11. QUICK TRANSITION TO MLS In nine appearances this season, Mauro Diaz has three goals and two assists. In 411 minutes played, he is averaging 0.66 goals per 90 minutes. FC Dallas signed the 22‐year‐old Mauro Díaz on July 17. He made his FC Dallas debut at halftime of a 3‐0 loss to Sounders FC on 8/3 at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. On 8/17, Diaz scored in his first start for the club in a 2‐1 loss to Portland. FIRST START, FIRST GOAL Prior to Mauro Diaz scoring for FC Dallas in his first MLS start (a 2‐1 loss to the Portland Timbers FC on 8/17) Jeff Cunningham was the last FC Dallas player to achieve the same feat. He did so in a 2‐1 loss to the Crew on nd 8/16/2008. Before Cunningham, Dom Oduro scored in the 2 minute of his first start for FC Dallas on 7/08/06, a 2‐1 win vs. New York at Toyota Stadium. HEDGES HISTORIC RUN nd Second‐year center back Matt Hedges appeared in his 52 consecutive game for Dallas on 9/14 to surpass Ted Eck’s run of 51 games from 4/5/98 through 7/31/99. Hedges streak ended on Oct. 5 when Stephen Keel took over Hedges position next to George John, effectively ending the UNC’s product run of 54 consecutive appearances. Hedges streak began on 5/9/12. He is one of only four rookies from the 2012 class to have surpassed the 1,000 minute mark this season. THIS DAY IN FRANCHISE HISTORY: OCTOBER 12 FC Dallas defeated the Chicago Fire, 2‐1, on October 12, 2011 – the only match FC Dallas has played on that date in franchise history. Jackson opened st the scoring in the 41 minute. He was assisted on the play by Ugo Ihemelu. rd Daniel Cruz scored the eventual game‐winner for Dallas in the 53 minute. He was assisted by Zach Loyd and Ricardo Villar. 42‐GOAL PLATEAU Kenny Cooper’s goal against Real Salt Lake last weekend pushed FC Dallas over the 42‐goal plateau for the first time since the 2009 season. FC Dallas had scored 42 goals in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

CHRIS SEITZ Goalkeeper Chris Seitz started FC Dallas 1‐1 draw versus Real Salt Lake on th th 10/5. The match was the 39 start of his career and his 10 for FC Dallas. The California‐native has started five MLS matches for Dallas this season. He has a 1.2 GAA, 14 saves and an unbeaten, 3‐0‐2 record. MOST FOULED TEAM IN MLS FC Dallas is once again the most fouled team in MLS. Dallas finished the 2011 season having been fouled a league‐leading 456 times. FC Dallas finished second in the league in fouls suffered last season, with 504 fouls against, just six behind the Vancouver Whitecaps FC (510). This season FC Dallas (443) is leading the way by a large margin having suffered 27 more fouls than Sporting Kansas City (416). FC Dallas has suffered 54 more fouls than the league average of 389. CHASING FC DALLAS’ YOUNGEST ASSIST RECORD Kellyn Acosta became the fifth FC Dallas Homegrown player to start an MLS match on 8/11. During his first start, Acosta was deployed in three positions (left back, right back and center midfield) due to injuries that occurred during the match. The 18‐year‐old also led the team in actions during the 3‐3 draw with the LA Galaxy. Should he record an assist against Chicago this weekend, he would become the youngest FC Dallas player in history to do so. The record is currently held by Eddie Johnson, who recorded an assist at 18 years and 172 days. Acosta will be 18 years and 81 days old on 10/12. DALLAS ADDS PETER LUCCIN TO ACTIVE ROSTER Dallas added French midfielder Peter Luccin to its active roster on 9/13. Luccin, 34, started his career in the youth system of French club AS Cannes before playing 118 matches in the French Ligue 1 (Bordeaux, Marseille and PSG). He transferred into Spain’s La Liga in 2001, where he started a total of 215 matches (Celta de Vigo, Atlético Madrid, Real Zaragoza and Racing Santander). Luccin suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during FCD’s preseason and had surgery to repair the injury on 3/1. Luccin made his return to the pitch in a Reserve League match versus New York, scoring one of three FC Dallas goals in the contest on 9/3. Luccin made his first appearance in an MLS match last weekend when he st came on in place of Michel in the 61 minute. Luccin completed 0.83 passes per minute, finishing the game with 24 including two key passes. DIAZ’S PASS COMPLETION PERCENTAGE VERSUS COLORADO th Mauro Diaz came on in the 65 minute for FC Dallas in a 2‐1 loss to the Rapids on 9/14. The Argentine quickly changed the game in favor of Dallas, th th leading to a five‐minute portion of the match (80 ‐85 ) in which Dallas dominated the possession battle 93/7. Diaz completed 21 passes in 25 minutes – a passes‐per‐minute average of 0.84, which was by far the best of any play in the match (Colorado’s Hendry Thomas had the second‐best score in the match of .553 per minute). MLS ALL‐STARS: FERNANDEZ AND JOHN FC Dallas and Peruvian National Team goalkeeper Raul Fernandez played the opening half of the 2013 AT&T MLS All‐Star game vs. Roma on July 15. Dallas’ 27‐year old goalkeeper has 88 saves this season, 16 off the pace of Chivas USA’s Dan Kennedy (104). Center back George John was named to the MLS All‐Star Inactive Roster on 7/31. Per the CBA, MLS names 32 All‐Stars annually. The inactive roster is determined by the player vote. John started all 23 games he has played in 2013. He has scored twice. The second was a game‐winning goal in a 1‐0 win over the LA Galaxy on April 13. This was John’s first All‐Star selection. ERICK Signed on July 5, Erick joined FC Dallas looking to immediately fill the void left by a preseason injury to fellow defensive midfielder Peter Luccin. Erick had suffered a pair of hamstring injuries during July and was forced to wait until 8/11 to make his FC Dallas debut. The Brazilian did well, completing 91% of th his passes before being subbed out in favor of Kenny Cooper in the 67 minute. Erick started eight consecutive matches for FC Dallas before being left out of the top 18 last weekend against Real Salt Lake.

CLOSE RANGE Only five of Dallas’ 43 goals this season have been scored from outside of the area. Michel’s olimpico goal against Seattle on 5/18 was the first. The second was scored by Blas Perez on 6/1 versus Colorado. Perez netted the third on 8/21. Je‐Vaughn Watson and Jair Benitiez both scored from distance against Vancouver on 9/7. Benitez has recorded the most actions in a match nine times. TOYOTA STADIUM AND TOYOTA SOCCER CENTER FC Dallas has reached a long‐term agreement with Toyota to name the popular North Texas sports and entertainment venue Toyota Stadium, while the 17 professional‐grade soccer fields adjacent to the stadium will be called Toyota Soccer Center. 22 MLS GAMES MISSED TO INTERNATIONAL CALL UPS Of the 22 games in which FC Dallas has been missing players due to international call ups, 11 have come from youth internationals Richard Sanchez (6) and Kellyn Acosta (5). The Men in Red won last year’s matchup with a 2-1 victory at Toyota Park on May 23, 2012. FC Dallas enters the match after a 1-1 road draw against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 5. With the 3-0 road victory against D.C. United Friday evening, the Fire jumped to sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings, just two points behind the Philadelphia Union who occupy the fifth and final playoff spot. QUICK KICKS vs. FC Dallas The Men in Red are 12-20-4 all-time in regular season matches against FC Dallas, including a 3-12-2 record in matches played in Texas. The Fire have two victories in the last 10 meetings between the teams, a 2-1 victory May 23, 2012 and a 3-1 road win on March 21, 2009

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (12-12-7, 43 pts.) enter their 16th season of MLS play after posting a 17-11-6 record, earning 57 points, tied with the 2000 season for the highest point total in club history. Continuity is key for head coach Frank Klopas this season as the team returns 19 players from the 2012 squad that qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2009, including veterans Logan Pause, Patrick Nyarko and Gonzalo Segares. Offseason acquisitions Jeff Larentowicz, Joel Lindpere, Maicon Santos and Dilly Duka bolster the roster for the Men in Red. Sean Johnson returns for his fourth campaign with the Fire. Reigning MLS Rookie of the Year Austin Berry will anchor the back line. The strike tandem of Mike Magee and 2012 Fire MVP and Golden Boot winner Chris Rolfe will serve as the scoring force for the Fire in 2013. EASTERN CONFERENCE PLAYOFF RACE With the 3-0 road victory against D.C. United Friday evening, the Fire jumped to sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings, just two points behind the Philadelphia Union who occupy the fifth and final playoff spot. The Men in Red have three matches remaining on the regular season schedule: Oct. 12 at FC Dallas, Oct. 19 vs. Toronto FC and Oct. 27 at New York Red Bulls. The Fire have a maximum possible point total of 52. BRIMSTONE CUP BATTLE The two clubs play for the Brimstone Cup – awarded by the supporters of the two teams so named when it matched the Fire and the Burn (Dallas’ name until 2005). The winner is determined by whoever comes away with more points from the two clubs’ Regular Season meetings. If the teams are tied on points, potential MLS Cup playoff and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup meetings can serve as the tiebreaker. If the teams remain tied, the previous year’s winner retains the trophy. As Saturday night’s clash is the only regular season match between the two sides in 2013, the winner of the game will take the Brimstone Cup outright. The Men in Red currently hold the Brimstone Cup after winning the only match between the sides in 2012, a 2-1 victory on May 23. Dallas has won the cup nine of the last ten seasons. The Fire won the first series in 2001, the Burn then claiming it in 2002, retaining it in 2003 when the teams leveled the series, then winning both league meetings in 2004. In 2005, the teams split their league meetings, but the FCD won the cup when they won the U.S. Open Cup semifinal. Dallas won the season series from 2006-08 and in 2010 and 2011; retaining possession when the teams split in ‘09. CHICAGO FIRE SOCCCER CLUB AND QUAKER OATS ANNOUNCE #cf97ThirdKit DESIGN CONTEST WINNER The Chicago Fire Soccer Club and The Quaker Oats Company, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, Inc., announced that Freddy Christiano’s municipal-themed, “Heart on Your Sleeve” third kit design is the winner of the #cf97ThirdKit design contest. A Chicago-based architect, Christiano incorporated the city flag as well as the iconic Chicago skyline into his winning third kit design. “Congratulations to Freddy and his unique take on incorporating the city into his design,” said Chicago Fire Chief Operation Officer Atul Khosla. “Our goal throughout this process was to collaborate with our supporters and I want to thank all who participated – the number of designs, votes and overall response far exceeded our expectations.” The club partnered with iconic jersey sponsor The Quaker Oats Company in July to launch the #cf97ThirdKit design contest, asking Fire supporters to submit designs for the jersey the Fire plans to unveil at the club’s Anniversary game in 2014. After a judging panel of Fire and Quaker representatives narrowed the entries down to five designs, fans ultimately had the final say in determining the winning kit via a fan vote. Tens of thousands of votes were cast, and Christiano’s design emerged as the majority winner. Christiano’s design will become a part of Fire history and is scheduled to make its debut for the Anniversary game in 2014, in addition to other future matchday opportunities. Christiano will also receive round trip airfare and accommodations for two to attend the Fire’s match against the Portland Timbers in 2014, including a private tour of the adidas campus in Portland, an opportunity to meet with adidas jersey designers and $500.00 to spend at the adidas employee store. Chicago Fire Midfielders Joel Lindpere and Arevalo Rios Called Up for Upcoming World Cup Qualifying Matches Fire midfielders Joel Lindpere (Estonia) and Arevalo Rios (Uruguay) have been called up by their national teams for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Lindpere has been selected by Estonian Men’s National Team manager Tarmo Rüütli to represent Estonia against Turkey Oct. 11 at A. Le Coq Arena in Tallinn, Estonia and against Romania Oct. 15 at Arena Națională in Bucharest, Romania. A product of Tallinn, Estonia, Lindpere made his international debut on Nov. 1, 1999 in a friendly against the United Arab Emirates. He scored his first international goal on Feb. 18, 2004 in a 1-0 win over Moldova, and has since scored six goals in 91 total appearances for his country. Estonia has been eliminated from 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying contention. Head coach Óscar Tabárez has called in Rios, the Paysandú native, to represent Uruguay against Ecuador Oct. 11 at Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa in Quito, Ecuador and against Argentina at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay. A veteran international who has earned 48 caps for his country, Rios made seven appearances in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, helping Uruguay to a fourth place finish. Named one of the three players over the age of 23-years-old for the 2012 London Olympics, Rios also recently competed in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup where he made three appearances. The Ecuador fixture is crucial match for Uruguay’s World Cup Qualifying chances. La Celeste currently sit in fifth place in CONMEBOL and are tied for points with Ecuador. The top four CONMEBOL nations receive automatic berths for the FIFA 2014 World Cup. The fifth place side faces a playoff match with a nation from the Asian confederation. Lindpere and Rios departed for international duty on Saturday, Oct. 5. Both players are expected to miss the Fire’s Oct. 12 road match against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas at 7:30 p.m. CT (My50/107.9 La Ley).
