CHANCE THE RAPPER ANNOUNCES
WINNERS OF BUD BILLIKEN ROYAL COURT IN CHATHAM By Christopher Shuttlesworth
Residents of the Chatham community gathered at Studio Movie Grill (“SMG”), located on 210 W. 87th St. as they continued to celebrate the completion of its nearly $3 million recent remodeling project with a six-week lineup of special screenings and events. One of the theater’s special guests included three-time Grammy Winner Chance the Rapper, as he announced the winners of the 2017 Bud Billiken Royal Court after a private movie screening at the theatre on Mar. 25, 2017. “I want to congratulate everyone who was apart of the contest for your hard work and dedication in school and writing,”
Chance the Rapper said. “At the end of the day, we are all winners because we got to see Power Rangers.” The 2017 Bud Billiken Royal Court will consist of a king, queen, prince, princess, lord and a lady. But due to so many gifted and talented students, two more positions, which were a duke and a duchess, were added to the Royal Court for a total of eight winners, explained Chance the Rapper. The Royal Court will participate in the 88th Bud Billiken Parade where Chance the Rapper will serve as Grand Marshal. The parade will provide disadvantaged youth of Chicago the opportunity to shine bright
and highlight positivity within their local communities on Aug. 12, 2017, according to budbillikenparade.org. “The Bud Billiken Parade, which is the second largest parade in the United States, has grown into an institution with participation from across generations. The parade will be broadcasts live by ABC7 Chicago at 10 a.m., and will begin south on King Dr. from Oakwood Blvd. to 51st., and will continue on Ellsworth Dr. through Washington Park to 55th St.,” according to budbillikenparade.org. Chance the Rapper encouraged everyone to come out to support the children at the 2017 Bud Billiken Parade.
The Cook County Board recently approved a new Tax Incentive Ordinance that will work in tandem with the recently passed Workforce Ordinance for any tax incentives processed by the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development (BED). “This ordinance is a result of a major effort by municipalities, businesses and property owners throughout the County to reactivate vacant property,” said Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle. “It is designed to improve the business climate, stimulate job growth in Cook County and ensure that those who receive the incentives comply with their commitments.” Moving forward, tax incentive recipients processed through the County’s BED must enter into an agreement with the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership for the term of the tax incentive. Recipients will work directly with the Partnership to fill job openings and vacancies for a period of at least seven business days from the date job vacancies are opened. Working together, the newly amended Tax Incentive Ordinance and Workforce Ordinance will: Facilitate faster processing of incentive applications in Industrial Growth Zones and designated retail corridors. Make tax incentive recipients more accountable for upholding their end of the agreement with the County. Increase transparency by requiring tax incentive applicants to submit an Economic Disclosure Statement to their municipality. Create avenues for revoking tax incentives for businesses that do not comply with their development agreements. Clarify and expand the scope of the County’s Living Wage requirement to ensure that employees who work at properties that receive a tax incentive are paid a living wage regardless of ownership. These new standards primarily apply to tax incentives reviewed by the BED and sent through to the Assessor for approval, and will promote overall accountability for the tax incentive and job creation process in Cook County, Preckwinkle said.
