Josephine Poelinitz was born in Chicago Illinois, she attended the Chicago Public Elementary (Goodrich, Raymond and Doolittle) schools and Wendell Phillips and Englewood High Schools; received a Bachelor of Music Degree from DePaul University and a Master of Education National- Louis University1988. Ms. Poelinitz began work for CPS as a Remedial Reading and Choral Instructor in 1973. She Recorded her first successful album in 1978. During her time at CPS, Josephine Poelinitz rose to the position of Vocal Music Specialist for the all of the 600 plus Chicago Public Schools. In November of 1982 Poelinitz founded the award winning All-City Elementary Youth Chorus and its sub group, “Just Us Kids.” This group went on to perform globally, with annual performances at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, travels to the White House, Concerts at theme parks, from Great America to Canada, collaborations at Carnegie Hall with the Manhattan Symphony. The Chorus was often selected as a featured choir for Regional and National Conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and traveled as far as Vienna, Austria where Ms. Poelinitz served as the Principal Conductor of the International Advent Sing. Some of Ms Poelinitz awards include, the Creative Award from the Gospel Music Workshop of America for her arrangement of “City Called Heaven”

,“Outstanding Work Preserving, Promoting and Advancing the Tradition of African American Music”- National Association for the Study and Performance of African American Music”, “Outstanding expertise in Choral Music”-National Association of Negro Musicians.Poelinitz may be most well known as the arranger and composer of the spiritual, “City Called Heaven”, which is performed all over the world, including Russia and Hungary. Ms. Poelinitz currently resides in Indianapolis, IN where she remains active as an Arranger and Vocal and General Music Consultant.
