DEPARTMENT HEAD NOTE, GREER REED

Where did four years go? The class of ’22 began their journey the same year I was hired at ChiArts. This particular class holds a special place in my spirit. These young people are living proof that when you invest in their being and not just the work, possibilities are endless.

Covid came in like a hurricane and cut their sophomore year at the knees. Junior year forced them to be creative in their personal spaces and senior year they had to play catch up. The senior dancers are the definition of resilience & tenacity.

This year’s Senior Dance Concert is a mix of solos that were showcased during Connections Week and chosen by their peers that best represents their class. Group works by guest choreographers as well as our very own brilliant dance staff, and a few video surprises promise to bring a bit of joy, laughter, and at times a tear or two.

I congratulate them, honor them, and wish them only success as they begin their paths into the world!

Dancer and Choreographer: Nandipha DuBois Title of Piece: Of Evidence and Confessions Choreographer: Gary Abbott Restaged By: Imani English Music: Marvin Gaye, Dexter Baxter, and Aretha Franklin Program Notes: Of Evidence and Confessions explores the belief in what is unseen.

Dancer and Choreographer: Arden Goodwin Title of Piece: Freedom Choreographer: Tracey Franklin Music: Take All of Me by Ken J. Marvin Program Notes: Take All of Me explores the idea of what freedom really is. All while exploring empowerment, vulnerability and authenticity before the cruelties of the world changes one’s perception of what freedom is.

Title of Piece: “From: There, To: Now” Choreographers: Levizadik Buckins and Ted Seymour Rehearsal Assistant: Nivia Walker Music: Phillip Glass, Gidon Kremer, Neoclassical One, Taalbi Brothers Program Notes: Senior Rep A and B have come together this year to create a collaborative work, To:There From: Now. The goal of the project was to experience the creation process and performance of a “one act dance work”. Through full group brainstorms and the magic of the moment, we developed a piece that abstractly speaks toward all they have gone through in the past 4 years.

This fluid creation process really allowed for all the unique voices of the cast to have their ideas and dancing seen and heard.
