2024 Priorities for Caprock Home Health Services

As promised from the end of the year 2023 State of the Company address, here are my 2024 priorities for Caprock Home Health. The future of healthcare, as far as we can see, is complicated but I know we are ready to navigate the unexpected as a company. The priorities on this list will bring us closer together as a team and make us stronger as a company to position ourselves as a key player in the future of home healthcare, and healthcare as an industry.

As I’ve stated repeatedly, please do not hesitate to reach out to me to discuss any aspects of these priorities and our future as a company. Email, call, text, request some time on the calendar - I am excited to have this conversation. My vision goes well beyond the words on this paper and I’m excited to see these priorities play out in 2024. This task will take a Team effort and I appreciate each of you pitching in to help us accomplish our 2024 Priorities!

Made For This

This year, we are embracing the theme of “Made for This...Celebrating the Past While Building the Future.”

“Made For This” implies that you are doing what you are made to do and that you see your job as more than a job, but also as a meaningful calling to take care of the wonderful clients and patients we daily have the privilege to serve.

Whether you’ve been at Caprock 1 day or 30+ years, we want you to know that our mission to keep people safe, comfortable, and independent in their home is as important now as ever before. And each of YOU plays a vital role in fulfilling this mission!

While we celebrate the past 40 years, we cannot hang our hat on what used to work. We must also seek to build the future and man, we have quite the opportunity to do just that. And you know what? It’s going to take YOU being of part of it to build the future we want.

Stay tuned throughout the year for activities, events, and more information related to our 2024 theme!

Caprock Leadership Summit & Town Halls

In late January, we hosted our first annual Caprock Leadership Summit. We had leadership from each office represented with over 40 people attending our 2-day offsite event. Alliance Credit Union in Lubbock was gracious enough to host us at their beautiful building. We held a 4-hour Core Values refresh session with Texas Tech University’s Vice Provost for Leadership and Culture Development, Steve Sosland. He facilitated us as we took our current Core Values, and we did almost a complete overhaul based on the input from everyone at the Summit. This was fun and mentally taxing at the same time. We also had the Chief People Officer of our local Chick-Fil-A’s come in and share on CFA’s philosophy of “heart of service” and going the “second mile” in your service to others. We wrapped the Summit with some fun teambuilding activities that allowed leaders from across our company to get to know one another better and we left as a leadership group that is aligned around our culture and priorities for 2024.

Since not everyone could attend the 2-day Caprock Leadership Summit, we are bringing a condensed version to your parent office in the form of a Town Hall format over the coming weeks. This time will be filled with a lot of the same activities we did at the Summit, just in a shortened manner. We will be refreshing our Core Values further and the first hour of the Town Hall will be to allow you to weigh-in on our Core Values so that you can go “all in” on them! We look forward to seeing each of you soon as we visit our Caprock parent offices across Texas.

Fun Engagement Opportunities

We’ve added a lot of new faces since rolling out some fun, company-wide engagement opportunities. A few ways to engage that you may not be aware of include:

Our Internal Facebook Group for Employees – If you’d like to join, simply find us, request to join the group, and we will let you in! This group has weekly posts of fun things happening all across Caprock.

Wordle Challenge Teams Channel – Join us in competing each day to see who can get the lowest Wordle score. Wordle is a fun, 3–5 minute daily game that you can play on your phone or computer. Click HERE to play. Once you play, you can share you results to our Teams Wordle channel and cheer on your fellow co-workers. See if you can beat the boss! If wanting to join this group and not already in or needing assistance on how to share your score after you play, please reach out.

Culture Calendar Explained

Monday Motivation Minute – Take 3-5 minutes to start your Monday (and week) off right with a video, thought, and quote centered around a topic to make us all better leaders. Leadership is not about a formal title or position, it’s about influence, and the reality is, you can lead from wherever you are. Join us on Teams to grow in your leadership abilities and to conquer the week ahead with a positive mindset!

Office Power Up – There’s a saying that sitting is the new smoking, and those of us that spend our days at a desk or driving around seeing clients in a car, often feel the negative effects of lack of movement. Join us each Tuesday for a 5-minute office power-up, a mini-workout designed to get you up and moving. All fitness levels welcome and encouraged in these sessions. Consider taking 5 minutes to take a stand for your health.

I-N-S-P-I-R-E – Between the busyness of work and the craziness of the world, we can all use a little mid-week inspiration, and this 5-minute faith fueled session will help put things in perspective and encourage you in your daily life. Join us on Wednesday mornings!

These are just a few of the many ways we hope to engage with you at Caprock. Throughout the year, stay tuned for other activities including StepBet walking challenges, basketball brackets and football pick-ems, and fun games with giveaways attached.

Our rule for success at Caprock is simple: Work Hard and Be Nice. We believe you can do these two AND have fun at work. So, work hard, be nice, and have fun. We hope you’ll join us in the fun!

Stories You Can’t Make Up In Home Health

I’ve been with Caprock for over 9 years now and I’ve seen just about everything imaginable as a home health nurse. As a nurse, we get a company car and I’ve had two interesting encounters with my company cars, neither of which was my fault!

The first incident happened right after I started at Caprock. I had a company car that Caprock had purchased from the home health agency that I came over from when they closed. I was outside the patient’s home I was going to see, my car was parked on the street, and right before my eyes, a drunk man comes flying down the street at probably 40 miles per hour. He smashed directly into the back of my company car and moved it forward roughly 5-10 feet! The man was clearly dazed with his head down, but then, came to and was somehow okay. He looked up at me, we made eye contact, and he attempted to drive off. I hopped the bushes in front of my patient’s home and was able to head down the street quickly enough to get his license plate and report the whole incident to the police. I’m very thankful that I was not in the car at the time.

More recently, Caprock was in the process of trading out old company vehicles, and I was given one of our new cars…less than two weeks old, bright, and shiny, with less than 500 miles on it. I parked across the street from my patient’s home because there was no room in their driveway. As I’m on the front porch knocking on my patient’s door to go into the home, I look back to see a car back out of a nearby driveway and back straight into the front bumper of my car. Luckily this time, the driver was kind and honest enough to ask me if the car they just hit was my Caprock car and of course, I said yes. I was in disbelief that the car was less than two weeks old and already had gotten hit. Talk about a stroke of bad luck! Luckily, no injuries here either and I’m glad they were honest and nice about the whole accident.

These are just two reminders to a) be careful out there as you drive around serving our patients, and that b) you never know what you’ll see while you’re doing home health. There’s never a dull moment in this business!

Janie Vega: Celebrating 31 Years of Service & Loyalty at Caprock

An interview with Janie Vega by Brad

Q: In what year did you start at Caprock and what do you remember it being like then?

A: Nov 1992. I worked part-time for a month and then went full-time. It was different and much smaller. I had a small desk with a typewriter right outside Marciano’s office, over off Knoxville.

Q: What made you decide to come work at Caprock?

A: I had been working at Casa Ole restaurant and I scaled back to 1-2 days/week when my daughter had her baby. I was helping her with her baby at the time. I heard from a friend, Rosa Palomo, who previously worked at Caprock, that CHHS was hiring. I applied, got the part-time job, and then, Dec. 16th of that year, I went full-time.

Q: Have you held different positions at Caprock over the years or been in the role you are currently in?

A: I started as a Clerk. I’ve been a Print Clerk now for 10 years. I’ve done a little bit of everything. They put me in a medical transcriptionist role because our nurses used voice recorders. I’d type it all out. They eventually moved to professional transcriptionists. I then became a Medicare Clerk, sent out MD orders, fixed charts, etc. I then went to Payroll for a few years, and then CBA Clerk, where I ordered medical supplies. Then, to Receptionist, then Payroll again. Then, I’ve done provider work, also. I’d take care of clients when the provider didn’t show up, especially the priority clients that couldn’t miss having someone there with them. Then, I became an Attendant Recruiter and moved from the Knoxville store to our current corporate office location. I’ve seen all the Morales children grown. I’ve also gone to several of our branch offices to help with moving and set-up, along with filing.

Q: What do you currently do at Caprock?

A: Clerk. I go and check my e-mails and have forms printed using two different machines, look at budget requests including processing them to be sent onto accounting. I check and re-stock the coke machine. I order and get all the supplies in the kitchen and refill/re-stock as needed.

Q: What would you say is your favorite core value of Caprock and why?

Hint: Our core values are: Compassion, Empowerment, Engagement, Quality, Adaptability, and Teamwork.

A: Compassion. Caprock is like my second family. They have shown me loyalty and care, especially in this last year.

Q: Share with us something fun that you enjoy doing outside of work or something we may not know about you?

A: I do a lot of crocheting and knitting, I love reading novels, especially Nora Roberts books. I enjoy listening to music… rock including Five Finger Death Punch. My favorite country song is “How do you like me now?” by Toby Keith.

Janie, we are so honored to have you as part of the Caprock family and we deeply appreciate your 31 Years of service and loyalty to Caprock!

Tribute to Perla Vasquez

Oct 23, 1985 - Dec 17, 2023

A Special Tribute by Birdie Perez, Coordinator for LHH&PAS in El Paso

Perla graced us with her smile and presence since 2015 at Caprock. She worked in the role of Client Care Supervisor. We will always hold Perla in our minds and hearts here at Caprock.

Since the day I lost you, I wake up every day with an image of you. That image is of you and your beautiful smile and that great spirt you brought. I think to myself, “It’s not true that I won’t hear your voice but most of all your laughter”. I go to work and there is a sense of emptiness as I walk in. I think to myself, “no it can’t be true”. I remember your laughter and your commotion with Alex. So many memories – thank you for them. I walk by your desk and think you are still there. You left us with so many beautiful memories that I will treasure forever. I will miss those late text from you, “Birdie, what are you doing up so late?” I miss your hugs because you are the best hugger ever. I say “are” because I still don’t want to accept that you left. It is hard to say you are gone. I see your company car approaching the building and think “oh, she’s coming”. LOL, who has your car?

You were a wonderful, loving, and kind friend and I will always love you. You are an inspiration, a beautiful example of how wonderful you were as a Mother – you knew love my friend. I thank the Heavenly father for bringing you into my life. Thank you for all the beautiful memories, lunch is not the same anymore, we talk about you and remember all the good times. “Gross, Nasty” are what we remember when we are trying to decide where to go, lol. I sent you messages! I pray going home and ask our heavenly Father to give you a hug and let you know that I (we) are thinking about you. I love you forever my Beautiful Friend!!!

In Our Hearts,

We thought of you today.

But that is nothing new, we thought about you yesterday, And days before that too.

We think of you in silence, We often speak you name.

Now all we have are memories, And your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake

With which we’ll never part.

God has you in his keeping. We have you in our heart.

Caprock in the News

Our very own JR Morales, Fleet and Special Projects Manager, made the Kansas City Star newspaper. Unfortunately, unless you're a subscriber, the article is paywalled. However, here's a brief snippet of him featured in the article. The KC Star recently sent journalists on a road trip to Las Vegas, and they passed through Lubbock earlier this week to pay tribute to Texas Tech and Patrick Mahomes. JR was able to meet up with them and share a little bit of his history and memories of the KC Chiefs. Really cool!

Fun Facts About Caprock

We give each full-time employee 8 VTO Hours (volunteering time off) per year. Find a charity or non-profit you’re passionate about and go use your VTO Hours in 2024!

Think Soup Kitchen, Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Animal Shelter, Church Project, etc. There are endless possibilities right in your community.

120 Days: This is the new amount of time to use your Holiday Exchange hours (up from 90 days). We hope this update enables you to use these hours before they expire! Remember, when taking time off, be sure to use your available Holiday Exchange Hours first before your PTO.

Referral and Recruiting Bonus: You can make $1,500 just for referring someone to Caprock who gets hired on. Currently, we are offering this referral and recruiting bonus for open Registered Nurse (RN) positions across the company.

So, consider being a mini recruiter for us and talk to your family, friends, neighbors, and people at the grocery store. Pretty sweet deal! #whodoyouknow?
