A profession is not the outcome of who I will become, but rather one of the processes toward becoming that person. The ideal person I pursue is a 'pi-shaped' individual. A 'pi-shaped' individual harmoniously combines deep expertise in two or more fields with a breadth of knowledge across different areas, allowing them to apply and collaborate in their specialized field. To grasp various fields beyond the specialized one, one must broaden their own world. To broaden this world, one needs to learn through diverse experiences to understand different fields. The field that best embodies this kind of individual is, in my view, architecture.

Architecture has the ability to convey various spaces to people.

In architecture, space is the place where specialized knowledge like design, structure, and construction, as well as diversity like art, humanities, and storytelling, are applied and collaborated.

To precisely convey these diverse spaces to users, architects need to expand their own world of communicable spaces through various experiences. An architect who can harmonize expertise in architecture with various other fields and collaborate well is the kind of individual I aspire to be. Therefore, in my pursuit of architecture, my intention is experience.

SITE ZONING The site is surrounded by three distinct zones with different characteristics. The commercial zone is to the west, the residential zone is to the north, and the manufacturing zone is to the south and east. This provides the site with the advantage of incorporating the features of all three zones.

City context and analysis This studio's project focuses on understanding and analyzing the urban context. The given site is an empty space located in the heart of Queens. The core of this studio lies in analyzing and understanding the urban context of this space, and subsequently proposing architectural analysis, programs, and zoning that align with it. The project consists of three phases. The first phase involves analysis and understanding of the site, the second phase includes conceptualization and program proposals, and the final phase involves shaping the form of the building and zoning.

The site, which has long been vacant, possesses three distinct characteristics. Firstly, it is situated right next to the subway, ensuring high accessibility. Secondly, it interfaces with residential, commercial, and industrial zones. The third feature is its distinct elevation compared to the flat surrounding areas, with a high train track immediately to the south.

Commercial C8 districts, bridging commercial and manufacturing uses, provide for automotive and other heavy commercial services that often require large amounts of land.

SITE ELEVATION The distinctive feature of this site is the 30-foot high train track to the south.

The presence of the train track and the elevated trajectory provide this site with higher visibility opportunities compared to other areas. The visibility created by the train track and the elevated height can showcase the site to people, offering a unique advantage.

Residence R5 districts are general residence districts that allow a variety of housing types, including low-rise attached houses, small multifamily apartment houses, and detached and semi-detached one- and two-family residence

Manufacturing M1 districts typically include light industrial uses, such as woodworking shops, repair shops, and wholesale service and storage facilities.

The concept of this project is to create a space where various users can collaborate with each other through a building that facilitates the exchange of functions and purposes among the three different zones.

The proposed program includes a market integrated with education and a space for artists. The spaces dedicated to the market and artists provide opportunities for participation from the residential, commercial, and manufacturing zones. In the contemporary context, markets serve not only as places to sell goods but also as spaces to exchange information and knowledge. Artists can find materials and equipment for their work in the manufacturing zone, which in turn offers these resources. Additionally, the manufacturing zone can provide educational opportunities for

02 SPIRITUAL, SACRED & SPACE Fall 2022

BUDDAHISM The main priciple of Buddhism can be seens as a process to achieve enlightenment. And this process is accomplished through the process of repeating life and death called Yoon-hwe. In summry, anyone can become a buddha throguth enlightment.

And the process of becoming a Buddha is a serios of circular cycles.

Spirituality of Community This project involves analyzing existing religious facilities, selecting a specific religion, and designing a religious space tailored to that religion. It encompasses case studies, religious research, pavilion design, and the creation of an integrated architectural structure for the community. These three processes are interconnected, with a focus on transforming data obtained from case studies and religious research into spatial elements through the design of small-scale pavilions and subsequently applying them to larger architectural structures. Importantly, the design aims not only to create religious spaces but also to ensure that both religious and non-religious community members can use the architectural space in the region.

PRECEDENT The selected case studies are Ando Tadao's Church of the Light and the Pantheon. Despite roughly a 2000-year temporal difference between these two architectures, they share similarities in the form of space and the process of entering sacred spaces.

The commonality between the Church of the Light and the Pantheon lies in their geometric spatial configurations.

These two spaces are composed using combinations of shapes such as circles, squares, and triangles.

Sequence of view scale

The Church of the Light and the Pantheon share a commonality in the sequence of perspectives before entering the sacred space. This similarity involves a gradual narrowing of the field of view leading up to the moment of entering the sacred space, after which the perspective expands.

01 - PAVILION The first project is to design a religious pavilion, and the chosen site is Central Park. The essence of Buddhism is to walk the path of repetitive and cyclical teachings to attain enlightenment. Central Park is a vast area with intricate roads and sidewalks, providing both complexity and a tranquil space for people. This pavilion aims to offer a serene space along the journey of walking in Central Park, aligning with the peaceful atmosphere of the surroundings.

02 - Community Spirit Shareing Time and Space According to research, individualism and the spread of COVID-10 are closely elated. In area where individualism is prevalent, the effect of policies to curb COVID-19 has been weak, and idvidualism is becoimg more prevalent as a result of social distancing. This site has various elements of conflict, including age, birthplace, race, and language usage. These conflics are not individual probelms, but are related to each other.

A community spirit is proposed to resolve these conflicts. Looking at the family, members beloing to varous generations and societies are living together, but they have a sense of coummnity. as a family. The reason is that they share the same space and time in house. Therefore, I propose that the space not only religious people but also ordinary people can share space and time and devlep a community spirit throught religion.

In this area, various races reside, and the languages they use are diverse. However, Americans are mainly aged 65 and older, while immigrants, including Hispanics, are distributed in the 18-64 age range, creating diversity in terms of race, language, and generation.

This region is not only place to diverse ethnicities but also characterized by a division of races across different age groups. To achieve integration both race and generation, there is a need to foster a sense of community by sharing space and time.

Reconnect High-Rise New York City is known to be the home of innovative and supertall residencial buildings in the world, yet these buildings are only financially accessible to a miniscule percentage of the population. This site is the economic center of New York. However, it was destroyed by 9/11 attack but is being rebuilt as the economic center of New York due to its symbolism and benefits. The project will research the socio-economic. In the past, if you simply piled up layers and cut off from other layers and focused on your own work, the future will quickly accept various information and establish an economic system related to industries in other fields.

01 - Reading This project is an interpretation of the space of the institution depicted in the book "The Palace of Dreams" by Ismail Kadaré. The institution is a highly restrictive and hierarchical space that monitors the dreams of citizens. The following is a part inspired by the space in the book.

The institution space from the reading

The space of "The Institution" is similar to the hierarchy of the Panopticon. Those responsible for liminal spaces are monitored by those above them, and in turn, they are also under surveillance by those above. They can only perceive the limited space they are in charge of.

Either side there was a long row of doors. He tried the handles of all of them until one opened, admitting him to another, less ice corridor. At last, beyond a glass parition, he saw some people. The corridor on the first floor was long and dark with dozens of doors opening off of it, tall and unnumbered.

“Selection.” He kept repeating the word in his mind, and now he was alone it struck him as sounding very odd. He caught a glimpse of a figure a long way away down the corridor, but couldn’t tell whether it was receding or approaching...He walked faster still, almost ready to break into a run, shout, do anything so as to overtake the man who now seemed to him to represent his only chance of salvation in this endless corridor. ...

Mark-Alem turned and saw a group of men marching along silently, carrying large files....the fourth corridor on the right would take him to the stairs leading up to the second floor.

After descending one flight they went down a long straight corridor, then down another lot of stairs. Mark-Alem noticed that the windows grew narrower on every landing.

3RD DIMENSION AND TIME

02 - Viewing

This project involves reinterpreting Brunelleschi's mirror, which demonstrated perspective, to create a device. Brunelleschi's mirror transformed three-dimensional objects into two dimensions, proving perspective. From the spacetime perspective, beings in three dimensions can comprehend all spacetime in two dimensions. Brunelleschi, recognizing that beings in three dimensions can grasp all spacetime in two dimensions, demonstrated perspective by transforming three-dimensional objects into two dimensions. I focused on reinterpreting it with an emphasis on the relationship of dimensions.

In 3D can perceive all time and space in 2D, beings in higher dimensions can simultaneously see all time and space in 3D. This device translates the perspective from higher dimensions into 2D, enabling beings in 3D to observe it.

Mirror Contorl Bar This device consists of a device, tesseract space, and a curved object. The object distorts the tesseract space through mirrors.

The control bar of this device can rotate and move forward and backward. Different angles and distances align with different tesseract perspective. Users can manipulate the control bar to distort their own spacetime and create a sequence.
