Believe it or not, state is looking out for hunters Voice hunter photo contest set

Andrew Benoit Sports Columnist A common complaint that I often hear among hunters is that the state of Michigan has an agenda against hunting. Many people thought the bait ban, which was implemented for the Lower Peninsula in 2008, would end up being permanent. They thought it was just another way to stick it to hunters. Looking back many of those same people must be eating their words. As they stated then, the natural resources commission made the decision to implement the temporary

It’s no secret; hunting is a big deal to many of you just as it is to me. With that in mind The Voice is asking you to share your passion with us in our first-ever hunting photo contest. Readers are asked to submit photos of their successful hunts by posting them on our Facebook page, sending them to us via Twitter (VoicenewsNB) or e-mailing them. Once the submission period ends on Dec. 9 we’ll post the photos on the wall of our Facebook page and readers can then vote for their favorite photo simply by hitting the ‘like’ button. Photos can be e-mailed to andrew.benoit@voicenews.com; please be sure to submit your name and address as well as the name of the hunter in the photo. A Visa gift card will be given to the person who submits the photo that receives the most ‘Likes.’ Good luck to all hunters who hit the field this season! ban to make sure our state’s deer herd was not at risk of a CWD epidemic. Thankfully, testing has proven the herd is safe for now and true to their word, the NRC has lifted the bait ban. Personally, I think

many of the decisions made recently that affect Michigan hunters have been in our best interest. The bait ban, and its subsequent removal, as well as the release of restrictions on the use of crossbows during the archery

season come to mind. Many people also complained crossbows would make harvesting deer too easy and would result in too many deer being taken during the archery season. With the results of last year’s deer harvest released earlier this summer that assumption couldn’t be less true. About 90,600 hunters used a crossbow during the 2010 archery season and harvested about 38,000 deer. That’s about a 36 percent success rate, well below the 44 percent success rate of all other hunters. Also currently being discussed is the antler point restrictions that have been implemented in certain areas of the state. The surveys returned to the DNR showed that statewide, the support for implementing antler point restrictions increased significantly from 2009 to 2010. My take on all of these

changes is that this is a good time to be a hunter in Michigan. Not only can you use bait if you choose to but you can also use a wider range of weapons to harvest a deer. If the

antler point restrictions are ever implemented more broadly throughout the state you’d also have a better chance to harvest a true trophy buck.

Anchor Bay’s Eddie Komph (above) placed 34th at Saturday’s state finals while Trevor Creagh of L’Anse Creuse North was 103rd.

The L’Anse Creuse North Crusaders also wrapped up their season by claiming both their division and dual meet titles in the MAC Blue Division. “I’m very happy with fact that we won the division meet. It was one of our team’s goals,” coach Mike Owensby said. Although LCN will graduate quite a few swimmers from this year’s team, Owensby said he’ll

Conference realignment will take place after the season is complete and, although Owensby may not like it, the Crusaders are pegged to move up a division due to their recent success.
