BONUS: Notre Dame School’s 2023 – 2024 ANNU AL REPORT starting on page 25
Notre Dame School of Manhattan offers a Catholic education for young women in the tradition of Anne de Xainctonge. Inspired by this 17th century pioneer in women’s education, Notre Dame promotes academic excellence for girls, an awareness of God in their lives and engagement in the world around them.
At Notre Dame in the 21st century, the school’s small, nurturing environment encourages each student to be open to personal and intellectual growth. The rich, cultural, racial, and ethnic mosaic of Notre Dame’s community and its urban location enhance global awareness. A challenging curriculum prepares talented young women for college and for lives of leadership and service.
Annual Fund Overview and Highlights
September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2024
All gifts to the Annual Fund go directly toward the education of our promising Notre Dame students. The Annual Fund helps bridge the $5,000 gap between the cost of educating each student, and the tuition paid. The Annual Fund also gives each student access to scholarship and financial assistance packages and helps maintain our fine facilities. It allows us to enhance the curriculum, to provide the latest technology, and to offer professional development for our teachers.
Here are some highlights from the past year:

We are grateful to you, our generous donors, who supported the mission of Notre Dame. Each one of you, regardless of the size of your gift, played a real and meaningful role in the education of our students.
Dear Notre Dame,
“Whether I see the girls in the classrooms, at play practice, or on one of our sports teams, what is clearly Chez Nous is that they care for and support one another.”
A Jesuit friend of mine, Brian O. McDermott, SJ, wrote in the July America Magazine about the real meaning behind the Jesuit motto AMDG: Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, “For the Greater Glory of God.” Fr. McDermott explained, “In other words, God’s greater glory is the increased thriving of any one of us and all of us together, in communion with God and with each other in God.” As you know, our founder, Anne de Xainctonge, lived this belief herself. Anne, through educating girls, wanted each of her students to come to know Jesus, to excel academically, and to be open to the world around them.
At Notre Dame, our theme for the year is “Belonging.” In a world marked by significant political turmoil, wars, racial and ethnic tensions, socioeconomic inequities, and climate challenges, where do we find our hope? For us, Chez Nous, we are inspired by Anne and Ignatius and look to God, whose love is super abundant and who creates and sustains each one and all the world. In God, we find our true sense of belonging and we are compelled to live the Gospel message, to love one another.
In this edition of Encore, we highlight some of our wonderful students and the work they are doing in and out of school. Whether I see the girls in the classrooms, at play practice, or on one of our sports teams, what is clearly Chez Nous is that they care for and support one another. Our students are engaged and joyful. They create a sense of belonging on and off campus.
During the past year, we conducted an alumnae survey, and we highlight some of the significant findings in the following pages. Reading the feedback of our alumnae, it is evident that the sense of belonging has been thriving at Notre Dame for decades. Here is one quote that reflects on the current relevance of our mission:
“We still need the same things for success in life... education, faith, and a sense of belonging.”
The very fact that you have opened Encore and are reading through our magazine means that you belong Chez Nous. As a community, we have reason to hope, having been chosen by God’s own self before the creation of the world. For each of us, God desires a future full of hope. During the upcoming school year, in a spirit of gratitude for all we have been given, let us work together to try to strengthen our sense of belonging, to fully support Notre Dame in all ways possible so it can continue to flourish, and do it all for the greater glory of God.
Warm regards,
Sr. Virginia O’Brien, S.U. President

“When students feel they belong, they are more engaged, confident, and willing to take risks in their learning. ”
Dear Chez Nous Family,
As we embark on a new school year at Notre Dame, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for your unwavering support. As a community guided by the light of Anne de Xainctonge, we have created an environment that inspires our students to reach their fullest potential.
I am excited to introduce our theme for the year: Belonging. The school will focus on fostering a sense of community, where every student feels valued, included, and connected. Belonging is fundamental to creating an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. When students feel they belong, they are more engaged, confident, and willing to take risks in their learning. Throughout the year, Notre Dame School will implement activities that promote inclusivity and celebrate the diverse backgrounds of our students. Your support is crucial in enhancing our programs, maintaining our facilities, and providing our students with opportunities that go beyond the classroom. Your contributions directly impact our ability to offer a robust curriculum, innovative resources, extracurricular activities, and essential support services. I hope you can continue to invest in our students’ futures. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference and helps us achieve our mission of excellence in education.
Thank you for your commitment to the Chez Nous family.
Gratefully,
Karina Vargas Principal
2023–2024 Sports Round Up
It was a great year of ND Athletics, and the fall 2024 season is in full swing! Here we hear from team captains and coaches on the Fall 2023–Spring 2024 highlights!
VARSITY SOCCER Fall 2023
After winning our 2022 season, the varsity soccer team moved up to Tier 1, the most competitive tier in the CHSAA (Catholic High School Athletic Association). Despite dealing with injuries and other obstacles, we stayed committed and dedicated to our team. With the continued support of our coaches and parents, we made it to the playoffs and closed out the season with a difficult but rewarding final game. Throughout, we forged strong relationships that continued off the field. We know that the bonds formed and lessons learned through ND soccer will ground us and help us through the next chapter at Notre Dame and beyond.

JV SOCCER Fall 2023
The Notre Dame JV soccer team had a very good season. There were lots of really strong incoming 9th grade new team members that mixed well with the experienced players. The team started off with some work to do, but as time went on and people started to warm up we created a skilled, successful team. We beat almost every opponent and made it to the playoffs. Everyone had lots of fun and is excited for next year.

CROSS COUNTRY Fall 2023
In the 2023 cross country season, our team was extremely successful. We started training in August in various Central Park locations. Our varsity and junior varsity teams shined at each meet. At our Sectional Championships, we were joined by Sr. Virginia, Ms. Vargas, and Ms. Brilliant. They cheered us on as our varsity team placed first, our junior varsity team placed second, and our freshmen scored second in our section (Manhattan, Bronx and Staten Island). The varsity team earned the opportunity to advance to states. This is our team’s third consecutive year advancing to the New York State Federation Championships. We placed 25th overall in New York State, which made us the second best Catholic high school team for girls. Overall, we had one of the best cross country seasons in our school’s history. I am so grateful to have been captain of such an extraordinary team.

VARSITY BASKETBALL
Fall 2023/Winter 2024
This season was truly a rollercoaster. Starting off, it was tough adjusting, having had 2 key seniors depart for college. As the season went on, we adapted and had a very successful 23 game season. It was a very long 5 months getting to the playoffs, with 5+ practices per week, including during vacations and holidays. But it was all worth it in the end because the bond we built with our teammates is so special. We capped off our regular season with a remarkable Senior Night game vs. St. Vincent Ferrer and won, scoring a high of 72 points! We went on to the playoffs, where our season got cut short after losing in the quarterfinals in a hard fought game vs. St. Catharine Academy. Our 2 starters, Kaitlyn McKiernan ’25 and Giulia Meier ’25, were awarded with All League Awards! It was a fantastic, extremely fun season filled with hard work and joy!

JV BASKETBALL
Fall 2023/Winter 2024
It was the first time for ND JV basketball to compete in the competitive CHSAA Tier 3. Though the team won only 2 games out of 10, it was a season of development and growth for our players, who look forward to taking to the courts this year!

INDOOR TRACK Winter 2024
Our indoor track JV and varsity teams have been very successful this year. Our JV runners improved their times and logged many successful relays. Our varsity team ended their season at the Nike Indoor Nationals. Excellent job, Maggie McCabe ’25, Dolores Maxwell ’25, Alivia Rokeach ’25, and Gigi Giancaspro ’25, who competed at Nationals. They placed third in their heat! Overall, the indoor track was a successful season setting us up for an amazing outdoor season!

OUTDOOR TRACK Spring 2024
The outdoor track season is always filled with the most excitement. Early on, select runners attended the prestigious Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania. Our team competed in the 4x100, 4x400, and the Distance Medley Relay (DMR). Each athlete worked extremely hard to qualify to compete in these relays. Great job to Julianna Lozito ’27, Sarah Figueroa ’24, Harper Small ’25, Megan Groo ’25, Madeleine Alderson ’25, Katherine Dempsey ’27, Ella Esparrago ’26, Dolores Maxwell ’25, Gigi Giancaspro ’25, Alivia Rokeach ’25, and Maggie McCabe ’25, who represented our team at the Penn Relays. Overall, our outdoor track team had a great competitive season and were proud to advance to states. It has been an honor to be a part of this group of runners for the last four years and to be captain of such an amazing team.

SOFTBALL Spring 2024
The Notre Dame varsity softball team completed the regular season by placing third overall in their division, CHSAA Tier 2. Led by Coach Grant and Ms. Vulcano, the team posted an impressive regular season record of 6-4, with their most notable win taking place on Senior Day against Dominican Academy. In the postseason, the team won their quarterfinal matchup against Holy Cross and made it to semifinals, before unfortunately falling to St. Vincent Ferrer. Throughout the course of the season, the team demonstrated remarkable defense and immense grit on the pitcher's mound. Led by captains Isabel Irwin ’24, Violet Love ’24, Sophie McElroy ’25 and Samantha Soto ’25, the team had a tremendous season and can’t wait to get back on the field next spring. Go Dragons!

ND’s First International Service Trip!
On February 16, 2024, a group of 34 Notre Dame students and 3 stalwart chaperones arrived at San Jose, Costa Rica to begin their community service work. The ND team traveled inland to Sarapiqui, where they worked on site improvements at a local school and also had the chance to interact with the children in attendance, a highlight for our group! Later in the week, ND students helped with reforestation, also in Sarapiqui, by planting native trees for sustainability.
It wasn’t all work, as the ND contingent also enjoyed sightseeing in the spectacular cloud forest of the Braulio Carrillo National Park, boating and hiking in the Tortuguero National Park, a group cooking class, a crafts project, and a visit to the Arenal Volcano in San Carlos. A morning spent at the La Fortuna Waterfall and swimming hole rounded out a wonderful, impactful visit to one of the world’s most beautiful countries. Next year, ND volunteers in South Africa!
It All Adds Up! ND Donors Support New Calculators for AP Students
In the winter of 2024, AP Calculus teacher Emily Fargo reached out to the ND Development team to ask if a grant might cover the cost of a class set of special calculators. Noted Ms. Fargo in her request, “The TI-NSPIRE calculator is able to perform more complex operations necessary for success on the AP Calculus AB exam. It also is the first color graphing calculator, which would make understanding and interpreting graphs and their derivatives much easier. It can also graph on the polar plane in addition to the cartesian plane.... Students who have this calculator have an advantage on the AP Calc AB Exam, so it will help boost AP scores.” A generous offer came in from loyal Notre Dame donors Zachary and Xiaoning Smith. Within a matter of weeks, the AP Calculus students had their new tools in hand! As Zac Smith put it, “Excelling in STEM requires amazing teachers,
motivated students... and the right tools! Xiaoning and I are excited to support Notre Dame and the students with these amazing graphing calculators.”
ND Drama takes Chez Nous INTO THE WOODS
For her last Spring Musical as Notre Dame’s beloved Music Director, Nicole Wakabayashi selected a play paradoxically simple and complex to highlight the theme of finding one’s path with the support and loyalty of others, even though the road may be fraught and far from straightfor ward. As dramatic director and longtime ND production partner Tyler Miclean puts it, “Into the Woods raises the stakes for... a young drama department,” noting the challenging nature of the music, script, and themes, “but the challenge was met in a joint effort.”
Certainly, full house audiences on April 25-26 can
attest to the show’s success and relevance and the stellar vocal and dramatic performances of the cast, led by narrator Natalie Grullon ’25, Angela Paolini ’25 as the Witch, Dana Aguirre ’25 as Cinderella, Isabella Cesaria ’27 as the Baker’s Wife, and Fiona Codd ’25 as Little Red Riding Hood. Every member of the cast, which included Xavier and LaGuardia high school students, along with a dedicated ND AV/Tech crew under the direction of Technology Coordinator Alaric Lejano and the guest musicians who created a dedicated orchestra, came together to make magic on stage as ND ventured Into the Woods!
Alumnae Survey 2023-2024
Asking Questions and Strengthening Connections
Notre Dame’s last comprehensive alumnae survey was in pre-pandemic 2017, so our Development and Alumnae Relations team thought the 2023-2024 school year was a good time to launch a new enquiry into how our cherished alums recall their time at ND, how they maintain connections with their alma mater, and what kind of new programming they would like to see. This latest survey also took place in the midst of the Heckscher Foundation Alumnae Matching Challenge Grant, making it extra important to hear more from our alums during a year we were asking them to contribute more. The school wanted to know how alums engage with the Notre Dame of today and how we can keep those connections strong.
We were heartened to learn from the survey results that the vast majority of our alumnae community do stay in touch with the school and with one another. There were differences among the generations in terms of how they stayed informed about all things Chez Nous, in terms of relying on our website, our email messages, or our social media posts, but just about every alumna respondent did, indeed, find a way to stay informed and be involved. The message about how close the bonds alumnae had established with their teachers during their high school years came through loud and clear— a signature aspect of the ND experience. Overwhelmingly, alums believed the Notre Dame mission was still as relevant today as it had been during their time at the school. We learned that ND alums seek ever more occasions to reunite with their alma mater, and our small but mighty staff has and and will continue to promote opportunities at the school, making sure everyone feels invited “home.”

On the impact of an ND education
Chez Nous taught me about integrity and drive, whether it was in the classroom or in my extracurricular life. The academic and personal skills learned from Chez Nous helped me transition seamlessly into college, and ultimately into the professional world. A great foundation in critical thinking.
Not only did Notre Dame give me an excellent academic education, I truly learned how to study/research/work in an academic environment. Transition to college and graduate work was remarkably smooth due to this preparation. The values the school taught me guide me throughout my life with friends, family, and colleagues. It was a most amazing experience.
The education I received at ND is incomparable. The sense of the power and importance of a woman is invaluable. Notre Dame gave me a community I didn’t even know I needed. I am forever grateful for the nurturing educational environment that was provided to me.
The education I received at ND was most instrumental in developing me as a person. This includes my educational development and work ethic, preparing me for college and then law school. But more importantly it was a major factor in my development as a person and in my faith.
Notre Dame gave me direction and strengthened my desire to excel.
How connected do you feel to other Notre Dame alumnae?
How do you learn news about Notre Dame?
I am still in contact with my entire “lunch table.” I love my ND sisters.
On the importance of friendships formed at ND
I was lifted up by my ND sisters. We helped each other overcome any obstacle, a true sisterhood.
They are still my motivators to this day. I met my closest friends at ND, we have been able to stay in touch and be a part of each other's lives for the last 25 years. We have seen each other through weddings, the births of all of our children, and unfortunately the loss of parents and grandparents. It is a sisterhood I will forever be grateful for.
Oh, man! My Chez Nous sisters are amazing! I love catching up with them when I am able to; I love to see how well so many of them are doing now! My friends have lifted me up during hard times, and they are, of course, always around to laugh and celebrate with.
On the impact of attending an all-girls school
It provided freedom to be ourselves and empowered us to assume leadership positions in the school.
Attending an all-girls school helped me develop bonds and interpersonal skills that I otherwise would not have developed attending a co-ed school. The experience of attending an all-girls school has also created many friendships and professional relationships with other women who have attended all-girls schools in my post-Chez Nous life. I feel as though I would not have had such an academic focused high school experience had I not attended an all-girls school.
It was very important! I attended at a time when most girls had few choices... ND broadened my outlook.
Attending an all-girls school meant that I was able to be empowered and encouraged to pursue higher education and make an impact. It made me more confident to be in male dominated spaces.
Confidence probably sums up what it meant to attend an all-girls school. We were never in doubt that we could do whatever we set out to do, and it was a guiding principle in my career and life.
It empowered me to focus on issues important to women, then and now.
Attending an all-girls school taught me the power women have not only on their own but as a collective. I have worked solely for female operated companies since graduating as I enjoy celebrating the power in what women can achieve.
Attending an all-girls school helped me feel seen, respected, and intelligent. I went off to college knowing that women are smart, powerful, and worthy of being listened to. I'm grateful that I didn't have the experiences of some of my female peers who went to co-ed schools and unfortunately often felt silenced or as if they were never smart enough to speak up. Notre Dame taught me that my thoughts are always of value.
At te nding an all-girls school gave me the confidence to be my own woman and to never be afraid of using my own voice.
More than ever, academic excellence coupled with kindness is sorely needed in this world.
On
the relevance of the ND mission statement
today
Preparing women for leadership and service roles in our complicated and divisive political and social world has never been more important.
It's important in this day and age to be open to other people's opinions and opposing beliefs. ND teaches young women how to talk about such topics in a safe and understanding environment.
It is extremely relevant. The world is truly global and people are from all around the world. We need to educate our youth, teach them to treat all people with respect, and be great examples and leaders.
Being open to personal and intellectual growth is probably the most important thing any person can do. The world needs committed, well-educated young women who have a global perspective. Notre Dame offers this education.
HECKSCHER ALUMNAE CHALLENGE GRANT
CHALLENGE MET
Thank you to Our Alumnae Supporters!
We did it!
The Heckscher Foundation for Children is devoted to leveling the playing field for underserved youths. They do this by financially supporting non-profit organizations that align with their mission. During our 2023-2024 fiscal year, Notre Dame School was invited to partner with this esteemed foundation by accepting an Alumnae Challenge Grant. The Foundation believes in the mission of our school, and pledged to gift ND $100,000 if we secured this same amount of funding through new and increased gifts from our Chez Nous alumnae. The number of alumnae who support ND’s annual fund each year has remained flat at 8% (200) for the last 10 years. Therefore, the purpose for the grant was to create a catalytic change to help grow the number of alumnae giving annually to ND by 2% through our network of 2,500 Chez Nous alumnae.
The Heckscher Foundation for Children offered Notre Dame School an extraordinary opportunity, and we are beyond grateful to share that our alumnae met and exceeded the fundraising goals and unlocked a $100,000 gift from the Foundation!
The total amount raised through the support of 275 alumnae came to $370,346 for our 2023-2024 fiscal year. We were blessed to have 50 new alumnae donors, 61 alumnae increase the size of their annual gift, and 75 alumnae return as annual donors. Together, our alumnae grew their giving by $172,645. This total excludes 48 members of the Class of 2024 who were equally inspired by the Challenge Grant and made an Annual Fund gift before they graduated!
We are blessed to have the support of our alumnae, and we look forward to strengthening this community for continued growth, Chez Nous!
New Fundraising Record Set at the Chez Nous Benefit!
On March 23, 2024, the Chez Nous Benefit exceeded all previous fundraising records, raising over $765,000, to support our students through the Notre Dame Scholarship and Financial Aid programs. Former ND Board member, Elizabeth Roth, was honored with the Anne de Xainctonge Award at the event, and Catherine and Michael Halloran were presented with the Chez Nous Angels Award. Nick and Donna Marfino P’24 and Steve and Flora McKiernan P’25 received the Parent Awards. As Student Speakers, JanelleStephanie Pascual ’24 and Giavannina Putignano ’24 presented first hand accounts about the impact of an ND education and the importance of the scholarship program. Celebrating and Reminiscing at Graduation 2024
On June 6th, the Class of 2024 celebrated their Commencement Exercises at St. Patrick's Cathedral, cheered on by administrators, faculty, and proud family members. Theology teacher Kevin McDonald offered the benediction, and ND President Sr. Virginia O’Brien, SU welcomed the graduates and their guests. Led by Nicole Wakabayashi, the Notre Dame Glee Club sang the National Anthem and closed the ceremony with a touching rendition of the school’s alma mater. In her Address to the Graduates, Valedictorian Jillian Tresca spoke of the value of finding “kindred spirits” among classmates; while, during her Farewell Address, Student Council President Catrina Kellaghan highlighted the journey of this special class from its hybrid start during the 3rd year of the pandemic to its joyful finish as an extremely close knit group. There were plenty of smiles, tears, and shared memories as the Class of 2024 concluded their high school careers and became cherished Notre Dame alums!

“Through college and beyond, I hope we all remember we can always lean on each other, whether we are 5 minutes or 5 hours apart. With the values we've grown to share I know we will go on to change the world in our special ways but always carrying a little of the Notre Dame touch; because while they can take us out of West 13th they can’t take the Chez Nous out of us.”

I started Notre Dame as a ninth grader during the hybrid year, and one of my goals even then was to be involved. Finding a community was something really important to me, and I was able to do so through the extracurriculars. I was most involved with the Drama Club, and the Cross Country and Track teams. With both activities, I found communities that uplift one another, whether it was in rehearsals or races, and I absolutely loved my time with both. I took multiple AP classes at ND, and while learning to balance my rigorous schoolwork with my activities was a challenge, I soon found myself able to budget my time well. As I continued with my busy schedule at ND, I was able to keep my grades high while staying involved with my extracurriculars; and with a strong resume, I got into Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and earned a generous scholarship. While I’m sad to leave the setting of my memories, I know I’ll hold the friendships and lessons I learned at ND close, and I can’t wait for what I’ll do next at RPI this fall.
Christina Johnson Fordham University
Transitioning from middle school to high school was a significant shift for me, as my short ten-minute walk to school was replaced by an hour-long train journey, sparking initial nervousness about making new friends. However, despite my shyness, sitting at our socially distanced lunch tables during the pandemic quickly led to my making three new friends, and my social circle at Notre Dame expanded rapidly from there. Securing an internship was one of my main goals at ND; and during my sophomore year, I diligently scoured the counselor's website for opportunities. That's when I stumbled upon the Garden Apprentice Program at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where I eventually completed over 400 community service hours and secured a position. This program pushed me beyond my comfort zone and exposed me to new learning experiences I never imagined. Thanks to the Garden Apprentice Program and my time at ND, I've grown as a leader in various aspects of my life. The lessons I've learned at both institutions equipped me with a solid foundation to apply to colleges with confidence. I'm immensely grateful for the opportunity to attend Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus on a full tuition scholarship. While I will genuinely miss my time at ND, I carry with me the memories of West 13th that will forever hold a special place in my heart.

In 9th grade, I attended a private school that was fully online due to COVID. It was extremely isolating, and the lack of social interaction affected my grades. Transferring to Notre Dame in sophomore year was the best decision I could make. At first, I was quiet and did not take full advantage of this fresh start, and I wish I’d had the confidence to put myself out there sooner. In junior year I joined the Step Team, which was a great way to make friends while expressing myself. One particularly fond academic memory I have is preparing for a Physics quiz with classmates. Several of us were confused, but that night we went on Facetime and helped one another through each problem. After that, every night before a quiz we would study as a group. Since Junior Year I participated in the ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering) Mentorship program that I first heard about through Notre Dame. At each meeting, we learned about different branches of engineering: mechanical, civil, architectural, and environmental. I had the opportunity to interact with other students of similar interests and create friendships that I still keep up with today. Through this program, I discovered my passion for interior design and computer science. My time at Notre Dame has encouraged me to be more confident in myself and my abilities, and I will attend Binghamton University on a full scholarship and major in computer science this fall. I plan to take all I have learned from ND and ACE into this new chapter of my life.
SCHOLARSHIP STORIES
Kristina Layos Fordham University
Throughout my years at Notre Dame, I have found that within these walls filled with laughter and shared dreams of young women, there lies a unique space where sisterhood is not just a phase, but rather a powerful narrative unfolding every day. It’s a narrative that is built on the foundation of friendship. Every individual has provided me with invaluable insights that have helped me to deepen relationships and further know myself. One important value I have attained from a Chez Nous sister at Notre Dame is the value of perseverance. It is partly due to my friends that I am able to have the success I have today. On the brink of giving up, encouraging words from my peers provided me with the determination to flourish. They’ve shown me what it’s like to truly be a leader and inspired me to try things out of my comfort zone. I was able to build the confidence to be the Vice President of both Anne’s Leaders and the Stock Market Association Club. I was also able to unlock my passion for helping my community. I will forever be grateful to my Chez Nous sisters for helping me to soar and reach my full potential. I am proud to announce that I will be attending Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business in the fall with a near-full scholarship.

From the moment I walked up to the Notre Dame building and was greeted by the sight of beautiful flower pots on the windows, I knew that it was the school I wanted to go to. Along with its welcoming facade, Notre Dame is also filled with a vibrant spirit, an encouraging faculty, and an accepting student body. Notre Dame has allowed me to thrive, and I made the most of my time there by joining a multitude of different clubs like Anne’s Leaders, Retreat Leaders, and even becoming the President of the National Honor Society! Through these clubs, I learned what it truly takes to be a leader inside and outside of the classroom. Next year, I will focus my studies on Art History. Thanks to Notre Dame’s interesting and diverse curriculum, I was able to take AP Art History my junior year and quickly realized my passion for the subject. I met with my teacher who gave me a vast list of resources and encouraged me to apply to colleges with the best art programs. I will definitely remember the nurturing and supportive environment that Notre Dame provides. It has taught me true leadership skills and a strong work ethic that I will take with me next year in college. I am absolutely thrilled to be attending Vanderbilt University on a near full scholarship. Although I’m excited for Nashville, I know I will always have a home at Notre Dame.
Mia Pacor
Northeastern University
Starting high school during a global pandemic is an experience like no other. Coming from a suburban public school in Westchester, I had to adapt to the city environment. I owe so much to Notre Dame and my parents for being the incredible support systems that got me to where I am today. Chez Nous fostered talents I didn’t even know I possessed. The independence that had once isolated me from peers and dissuaded me from social interaction was found to be fundamental for the opportunities this school has granted me. ND builds the foundation for future leaders and innovators, as well as some of the most creative, artistic minds of our generation. As an Anne’s Leader, a member of the National Honor Society, the head of our musical’s A/V Crew, and President of Building Bridges Club, I have accomplished more than I would have anywhere else. Over the past four years, I have been able to explore a variety of subjects, interests, and areas of study, and have decided to go into behavioral analysis. I especially have to extend my gratitude to Mr. Lejano, who helped me discover my love for computer science and technology. I’ve decided on a combined major in Criminal Justice and Psychology, and will continue my love for computer science by pursuing it as a minor. Thanks to the support of Chez Nous I will be attending Northeastern University in Boston on a near-full I will never forget the memories I made, the people I met, and the things I learned inside the walls of Notre Dame.
Giavannina Putignano Skidmore College
Over the four years I have spent at Notre Dame, I have learned the true meaning of Anne’s Values that I will carry with me throughout my life. As a naive ninth grader, I picked up a general understanding of these values and how they were emphasized in all aspects of the Chez Nous experience. It was not until I saw my Chez Nous sisters practicing them daily that I really grasped their importance. I got to experience the value of Conversatio as I conversed with my friends at lunch about our common interests and shared classes; I saw the value of Service in action when my fellow NHS members and I volunteered at a school to help them pack up and organize their library; and I saw how students practiced Perseverance during AP and finals weeks preparing for multiple tests and projects. The spirit of Anne de Xainctonge is all around at Notre Dame, and practicing these values has played a significant role in making my time at ND some of the best 4 years of my life. I will attend Skidmore College on a near full-ride tuition scholarship. While I’ll no longer be a student of Notre Dame, I will carry the many valuable lessons I have learned with me to Skidmore and beyond.
The Class of 1984
Members of the Class of ’84 came out in force for the 2024 Chez Nous Benefit in March, and again for their 40th reunion at the school in May. A few members of the Class of ’84 kindly shared their reflections on their time at ND and why they believe in supporting the school today.
Carol DeGeorge
When I entered ND in 1980, I was so excited to be in a new school. ND on 79th Street really felt like a home away from home. It was easy to make friends because we were all sharing this new experience. My sophomore and junior years, however, were difficult. I dealt with family issues a 16 year old should never have, and my academics suffered tremendously. I should have been asked to leave ND because my grades did not meet the standards. But my teachers and administrators did not see the failures; they saw Carol. Sr. Mary Dolan, Sr. Isaac, and other teachers knew I was struggling. They stepped in and got me help. Every afternoon of my senior year, I headed to Sr. Mary Dolan’s office to do my homework and study. I worked hard, did very well and felt supported, no matter the challenges of my home life. ND offered social emotional learning before it became a part of the American Education System. They gave me the strength to move on to college. They believed in me when I was at my lowest. I have taken their kindness and support and have been able to pay it forward. I have been a teacher for the last 31 years. I make an effort to know my students and to help them in the same ways the sisters and staff at ND took the time to lend me a hand. I teach in a public school, but my Christian values are always present. I help my students regularly when they need advice or someone to listen. I guide them to get the help they need. I even share my own story so they know we can overcome problems in our daily lives. ND's lessons are in my classroom, I never give up on students. I always remind students you are not just grades, you are a person with special traits and those too are important.
I have over-achieved in my adult life: I have three master's degrees, have traveled to all 7 continents, and I currently hold the position of president of my teachers union. I help teachers overcome medical obstacles, get them the resources they need to be professionally successful, and more importantly fight for the respect they deserve.
None of this would have been possible without ND. They helped make me a strong, independent person, who is not afraid to stand up for what is right. I give to ND because I know I am not the only one who was helped in a time of need. I know ND uses those
donations to guarantee the message of helping those who can't help themselves never goes out of fashion. I will always give to ND because they have given so much to me. I honestly believe I am here today because they loved me unconditionally and guided me to be a dedicated educator. Together, we can continue to support, educate, and nurture the next generation of women who will lead this country into the future.
Christina Solarino-Leddy
I remember going to school in a brownstone on the Upper West Side with our class of approximately 49 girls. It was the perfect setting for me as I arrived at ND in 1980 as a shy, quiet and self-conscious young girl from Queens, not knowing one person; however, I graduated in 1984 as a confident and happy girl with the best friendships ever that I can proudly say still remain strong to this day! ND was the perfect place for me to grow personally, spiritually and academically.
The teachers at ND were not only smart and effective, but they were also caring and kind. Certain faculty members had a particularly strong impact on my academic development: Mr. Emmanuel (math), Sr. Mary Isaac (social studies) and Ms. McNamara (science). But there was also Ms. Cogar, who taught our Modern Woman class that I remember so well. She taught us so much about being a good, kind person with God in our lives, which goes hand in hand with being successful no matter what career path we chose. Always be kind. This stuck with me.
I support ND and its mission today to promote academic excellence in young girls with the shadow of God in their lives as they proceed through the world. I enjoy attending reunions with my friends and seeing how ND has grown and how much the students love their school. The world today is exciting and different, so to be able to attend a Catholic high school that provides students academic excellence and strong spiritual values is a privilege. This is why whoever can support Notre Dame—Chez Nous—whether through their time or financial resources, is a blessing.
Michele Flanagan
Some of my most cherished memories stem from my high school days at Notre Dame: Friday bagel breakfasts during TA, impromptu dance parties around the cafeteria jukebox, and the mad dash up the senior staircase – these moments still bring a smile to my face even after all these years. The spiritual retreats hold a truly special place in my heart. Each retreat helped me to make different connections that turned into lifelong friendships I hold dear to this day.
I love connecting with ND in any way that I can. I have the privilege of living close to NYC, which allows me to attend the luncheons—something that I look forward to. For me, the most special connection to ND are my high school friends. Back then, I never imagined how close we'd remain as adults. I’m incredibly grateful for this group in my life. We gather frequently, reminiscing about our time at Notre Dame, especially the laughter-filled memories we made in “Our” Chez Nous. For these lifelong friendships, I’ll be eternally grateful to Notre Dame.
ND played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. The foundation I received there instilled in me confidence and the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Notre Dame was a rare environment—a sisterhood of supportive classmates and teachers who genuinely cared for each student's well-being. The teachers' dedication made learning a joy, a feeling that continues to this day.
Lillian Migliorini
In the moment, I didn't truly realize or appreciate the confidence that Notre Dame instilled in me; nor was I aware how it would prepare me for a world in the logistics and transportation industry that men dominated. Notre Dame and the friends I made helped prepare me not only academically but also created an environment where I felt safe taking on leadership roles and challenging myself academically. While the school was competitive, you knew your friends and classmates celebrated your achievements.
I attribute my success in college, graduate school, and in the workplace to the confidence and leadership instilled in me during my 4 years at Notre Dame. Why I Give?......I just want to pay it forward.

Results reported on a cash basis.
The Notre Dame Annual Report is an opportunity to recognize those who have made a significant difference in the lives of our students through their generous contributions of time, talents, and treasure. If your name was omitted or improperly listed, please accept our apologies. If you have detected an error, please notify Elizabeth Bixenman, Director of Development and Alumnae Relations, at bixenmane@cheznous.org so we may correct our records.
With love and gratitude to all who are mentioned herein, including alumnae, parents, alumnae parents, grandparents, friends, and current students.
Ways to Give
The generosity of the alumnae, parents, alumnae parents, grandparents, Board, and friends of Notre Dame makes a tremendous difference in the lives of each student Chez Nous. Your gift to the Notre Dame Annual Fund and support of the Chez Nous Benefit helps to bridge the gap between tuition and the significantly higher cost of educating each student. Each gift, regardless of size, directly supports our students through tuition assistance, scholarships and access to the programs and opportunities that enhance their experience. Thank you for your generosity!
To Make a Gift By Mail
All donations to the Annual Fund are most welcome. Please mail your check or money order made payable to Notre Dame School.

Individuals who have reached the age of 70½ may donate up to $100,000 to charitable organizations directly from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA) without treating the distribution as taxable income. Please contact your IRA administrator for more information.
Planned Giving/Bequests
Chez Nous Angels are a group of visionary donors who have made gifts through bequests and have thus assured the continuation of the mission of Notre Dame. Constance WILDER Wokoun called to marvel at how much has changed at the Notre Dame of today, after receiving the Summer Chez News in the mail. Yet, she also knows the values and spirit of the school she loved remain.
“Connie” shared this photo of her own graduating class, noting she is “to the right of the statue. I have a big grin on my face.” Connie wonders about her classmates: “Where are they now or what do they remember about our Notre Dame? We were such a small group, I'll bet there are others that are curious.” She also welcomes “anything they could say as a thank you to ‘votre mere’ for all the sisters did for us.” Certainly ND would love to hear more from the Class of 1950!
1954
Sheila LEWIS Houde was delighted the school recently chose Friendship as its theme of the year. Writes Sheila, “Friends ! I first met Mary Werthman in Mother Catherine Mary’s magical classroom in 1946! We have been friends since then and still talk regularly on the phone. May I add that Mother Catherine Mary was more than a teacher? MCM was also a precious friend, not only to me, also to my mother. My dad was also a great fan of MCM!” Sheila came to Québec City after college, with the intention of studying French for six weeks. She fell in love with the city of Québec and then with a Québécois, Pierre Houde. Six weeks turned into sixty years! She is still happy to live in their old, but comfortable home. She
will be 88 next month and is in excellent health (Deo Gratias). Her daughter Michèle and son Rémi live nearby; her daughter Marie-Andrée visits regularly from Ohio. Her happiest news is that she is a Great Grandmother! Twice in the same month. Oliver, in the USA, and Ellie in Montréal. Double joy! Concludes Sheila, “The eight years that I spent at Notre Dame are among my happiest. May ND continue to guide young women on a path of joy, accomplishment, and yes, FRIENDSHIP!”
1959
Toni LEQUIRE-Schott sent a wonderful photo of a get-together with classmates: “Here we are: 3 little maids from the class of ‘59–Marilyn, Toni, and Liz” (Marilyn GRAMAS, Antoinette (Toni) LeQUIRE-Schott, and Elizabeth DiTOLLA).

Maria RIVERA
Trudeau writes, “What a pleasant surprise I had when my neighbor’s granddaughter came for a visit to Palm City, Florida at Thanksgiving! She is a member of the Notre Dame Class of 2016.” Attached is a photo of Maria with Regan BURKE ’16.

Louise POCIECH Toth has undergone 12 surgeries in 10 years. Most recently, she had her right knee replaced for the second time and is recovering very well. She can even drive. She and her husband are celebrating their 60th anniversary in September. Her daughter on the East Coast is planning on coming, and she is feeling so blessed. Louise can’t believe it’s so long ago that she attended Notre Dame school, one of the happiest moments in her lifetime, writing, “I will never forget the wonderful time I had.”
1966
Patricia CONNERS Daver retired this year after 40 years as an aesthetician. She is turning the room that she has been working in from home into an art room for her painting that she has been doing for the last 10 years. Patricia has missed meeting her friends from the Class of 1960, whom she saw when she was in NY. She has not been to the States since she sold her house and sends Best Wishes to everyone in her year.
Carol GOSE DeVine and her husband had a wonderfully hectic summer with visits from their children and grandchildren. The photo is of what they called the “Milk Bar.” From left to right, husband, Fra, granddaughter, Lucy (9 months), Lucy’s cousin and The DeVines’s granddaughter, Rowan (11 months), and Rowan's brother, Tobin (4 1/2 years). The DeVine “children” were also there, some of them for an entire month!
Carol continues to be involved on the Governing Board of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, as well as chairing
the Southwest Friends of the VSO. She has temporarily taken over as Chair of the Steering Committee for the Vermont Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America, and also continues to offer her help to her local community association. Carol writes, “Who said retirement wasn't fun?!?! However, my garden is where my heart is, and I spend as much time as I can outdoors in my rather extensive gardens. The second photo is just a glimpse of a small part of what keeps me so busy!”
Thelma MILLIKEN Negley enjoyed lunch and a show with ND’s Major Gifts Officer this past summer. Prior to the show, Thelma paid a visit to Notre Dame’s old home on 79th Street.
Kathleen WALSH D’Arcy organizes the Annual St. Pat’s for All Parade in Queens. Kathleen notes that this year the most diverse, progressive, inclusive St. Patrick’s Parade welcomed everyone to their 25th Anniversary, especially children and families, “to celebrate all of the children of the nation and the world, fulfilling the promise of the 1916
Irish Proclamation.” Kathleen writes that St. Pat’s for All was founded to respond to bigotry and homophobia. Each year the parade has been honored by special participants: Senators, Congress members, New York Mayors, Queens Borough President, the NY City Council, representatives of the NY Assembly, members of The Irish Historical Society, and even the President of Ireland. Says Kathy, “I was very proud to be joined on stage this year by the Irish Consul General and U.S. elected officials, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, all calling for peace and a CEASEFIRE in Gaza,” All are welcome to join the parade next year on Sunday, March 2, 2025.

Irene UHNAK Messina sent this lovely report: “The Class of ’69 got together in June to Celebrate their 55th Reunion. Unfortunately, this year kept many away due to varying circumstances. Barbara Bono’s travel plans were upended by a bus cancellation and so she was unable to make it to the Long Island Railroad that morning. However, it did not deter a few of us from getting together.
Diane COGEN, Lorraine RICCOBONO Mahoney, Kathleen DUNNE Carberry and I had a nice luncheon in Syosset, Long Island. Desserts and fun times reminiscing about our days at Notre Dame were continued at my home in Laurel Hollow, which overlooks Cold Spring Harbor. It was a pleasant if not warm day, and it seemed as though much time had not passed between us. We were able to catch up with our classmates through each other. It was a day well spent and hopefully in 5 years’ time we will be able to do it again!” In individual news, the Messina family welcomed grandbaby Number 11 to the family.
Stevie Marie was born on July 12th, weighing 8lbs,10 oz to first time parents Steven and Camille Messina. She is not only precious but a good baby, too, and will bring much joy to their growing family. The Messinas are also looking forward to December, when their next granddaughter is due to arrive. It is certainly going to be a happy and festive Holiday season this year!
Alina PINELLI Green says, “Hola from La Capital del Sol!” Alina recently finished filming a documentary about the celebrities interred in two memorial gardens (Vista Memorial and Graceland North,) where she serves as a volunteer photographer for the website, “Find a Grave.” She submitted her film to the YouTube channel “Hollywood Graveyard” with the hope it gets selected as part of a call for viewer submissions and is keeping her fingers crossed! This fall she is off to Paris to do research for a future art project. The photo was taken during a visit to the Miami ISKCON New Naimisharanya Temple in Coconut Grove. Alina concludes, “Stay blessed, Class of 1969 (the Class that’s really fine!)”

Ambar PAGAN, a student leader for the group, Dominicans at Columbia, hosted the first-ever Dominican Culture Day with U.S. Congressman Adriano Espaillat at Columbia University celebrating the 180th anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s independence. The event made visible Dominican representation, including music, food, and tri-colored flags throughout the hallways of Columbia University. Ambar is also representing Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs at the White House National Security Council and the Office of the Federal Chief Information Security Officer—a unique opportunity to learn about the impact of national security policy and the pivotal role of cybersecurity. Her specialization is International Organizations and United Nations Studies at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. The Director of the Specialization, Daniel Naujoks, selected Ambar to help plan a workshop on the role of the youth in the future development of the United Nations. Ambar also writes that on September 18, 2023, President Luis Abinader from the Dominican Republic attended the World Leaders Forum at Columbia University. It was a great honor for Ambar to lead the Dominicans at Columbia student group and together request from political leaders more seats at the government table for talented and skilled youth to contribute to the human capital and development of the Dominican Republic. As a daughter of
immigrants from DR, it was a unique opportunity for Ambar to speak on behalf of the student collective and voice hopes and desires to build a better future for the Dominican community. Serving as a policy advisor intern for the United Nations Mission to the Dominican Republic offered a unique opportunity for her to be a young advocate of change on global issues, such as women's rights, sustainability, and world peace. All of these opportunities have prepared Ambar for a career in the foreign service. Ambar is now attending Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, pursuing a master's in international affairs with a concentration in human rights and a double-specialization in United Nations studies, and Technology, Media, and Communications.
Rianne Pyle ’17
As a Production Manager at Our Time Projects, an independent film company, Rianne Pyle ’17 has a range of responsibilities, from managing the office during non-production periods to assisting lead producers during active filmmaking. Rianne sources equipment, handles paperwork and logistics for travel and lodging, and hires production assistants, among other tasks. Rianne believes her “core function is to facilitate smooth operations and provide crucial support to ensure productions run efficiently.”
Rianne’s path is a testament to keeping one’s options open, especially as a young student: “Initially, I was fascinated by the works of forensics and aspired to be a medical examiner or forensic anthropologist, fueled by shows like Castle and Bones. Yet, in her senior year at Notre Dame, her mother enrolled her in a pre-college screenwriting course at the nearby School of Visual Arts. Notes, Rianne, “After my first class with Joan Brooker, who remains a mentor to this day, I knew filmmaking was my true calling.”
After graduation from ND, Rianne attended SVA’s filmmaking school full-time and gained a solid foundation in cinema, a valuable network, and plenty of hands-on experience. The creative environment of SVA allowed her to experiment and learn from failures, while working on music videos and professional sets gave her real-world exposure. This combination of formal education and practical training laid the groundwork for her journey, ultimately leading her to her first full-time job in the industry.
Rianne enjoys the challenge of having to pivot quickly and find creative solutions to problems as they arrive, sometimes even putting together shoots at the last moment. The spontaneity of her job makes it both exciting and satisfying. “When the film is finally released and audiences connect with the story we’ve painstakingly woven together, that feeling is unparalleled. The ability to transform complexity into compelling narratives that resonate with viewers makes the challenges worthwhile and deeply gratifying.”
Looking back at her time Chez Nous, Rianne especially values the emphasis on forming strong friendships. In her work today, networking and personal connections are crucial.
“The friendships I forged during those formative years have not only stood the test of time but have also facilitated remarkable opportunities, from working on music videos with millions of views to collaborating on commercial sets and live events like the VMAs.”
For current ND students who might be interested in following a similar career path, Rianne recommends starting early and immersing themselves in the craft. Students can embrace the technology at their fingertips by using their phone cameras to capture footage, experiment with visual storytelling, and honing skills. They should seek out high school programs or resources like No Film School that support and nurture young filmmakers. “Embrace the journey wholeheartedly, and don’t be afraid to create, fail, and learn.”
Rianne sincerely hopes that Notre Dame continues to be a beacon of inspiration and education, empowering the next generations of women across all disciplines, from STEM fields to the arts. “Just as Notre Dame has nurtured future lawyers, doctors, and engineers, I hope it will also cultivate the growth of aspiring graphic designers, animators, and filmmakers. Notre Dame should remain an institution that encourages young women to fearlessly explore the breadth of their interests and passion, without limitation or boundaries.”

Eileen MURRAY finished her undergraduate program at the University of Toronto, where she majored in Health Studies and double minored in Urban Studies and Indigenous Studies. During her time at U of T, she worked as a geography & planning research assistant under Dr. Nidhi Subramanyam, had two articles published in Juxtaposition Global Health Magazine, and published a research article in Health Perspectives. Eileen writes that she has been able to make great friends, meet amazing mentors, and make valuable connections. Her time at U of T has allowed her to explore the intersections of urban planning, the environment, and public health. Her studies fostered her desire to become an epidemiologist, and she wants to study disease spread as it relates to the urban environment, which led her to apply to Masters in Public Health (MPH) programs in epidemiology. She is excited to share that she accepted a spot at the City University of New York's School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH)'s MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Furthermore, she is honored to be selected as a CUNY SPH Dean’s scholarship recipient. While she is sad to leave her friends and colleagues in Toronto, she is excited to start working towards her career as an epidemiologist in New York City.

Lillian Ji writes that her first year at Purdue University as an engineering major went by really fast. She received an award for First Time Researcher. With this award she earned a stipend and class credits. As for her research, she is currently working on creating lithium batteries, a project she started in January. Lillian presented her research at Purdue's Undergraduate Research Expo. The school year was amazing for Lillian, and in the summer of 2024 she continued her research. She is entering her major, Mechanical Engineering, this semester.

Notre Dame joins family and friends in mourning the loss of Joseph Licciardi, who passed away on February 2, 2024. Joe’s daughters Stephanie ‘15 and Natalie ‘19 attended ND; and his wife, Catherine Pino, is an extremely dedicated volunteer at the school, putting in long hours each year helping to organize the Chez Nous Benefit. Founder and owner of the IT strategy and management company Pure Logic, Joe helped Notre Dame secure and run its computer network with a great deal of hands-on support. The school still appreciates and enjoys the smooth workings of Pure Logic network management but misses terribly the presence and guidance of Joe Licciardi, a family man who was a model of generosity and kindness.
Notre Dame remembers fondly Eileen Duffel Lugano, who passed away on December 21, 2023. A devoted wife and mother, Eileen sent her twin daughters Stephanie (McCuin) and Kristin (Brennan) to ND, where they were proud members of the Class of 1993. Eileen taught ESL and GED programs for the NYC Department of Education for 47 years. Even after her daughters’ graduation, Eileen continued to support Notre Dame and was an active volunteer. She also brought her many gifts to bear at The Epiphany School, Xavier High School, and the 9/11 Tribute Museum. Her life was centered around faith, education, and family; and we at ND are so very grateful for all the time and effort she dedicated to Chez Nous.
The School honors the life and profound contribution of former Notre Dame Science Teacher Theodore Povinelli, who passed away on February 29, 2024. “Mr. Povinelli” especially helped our students to fully understand and enjoy physics, along with coaching them toward confidence in all math and science subjects so that they were prepared to explore careers in the STEM fields. A true Renaissance Man, Ted brought enthusiasm, passion, and humor to his teaching Chez Nous from 1982–2010. Decades of students and colleagues remember him with love and gratitude.

Catherine and Michael Halloran
It was the early 1990s. We had a table for an Inner City Scholarship Fund benefit supporting NYC Catholic schools. Seven of our friends agreed to attend. We had one empty seat. We received a call from the gala organizers asking if we would host a school principal at our table. Of course, we couldn’t decline, so now our table was complete. In deference to the school principal, our pals all agreed to be on their best behavior. To our surprise and delight, Sr. Mary Dolan, S.U. was not a principal, but the very personable President of Notre Dame School. All it took was a few minutes of time together and we all relaxed.
None of us at the table were familiar with Notre Dame. After a lively round of introductions and securing beverages, we asked Sr. Mary about the school. It was (and continues to be) a wonderful story about a four year all-girls high school dedicated to teaching and developing each student intellectually, socially, and spiritually. By the end of the evening, all nine of us began, in various ways, to support Notre Dame. Growing up in Milwaukee (Mike) and Cleveland (Cathy), we were both educated in Catholic Schools, continuing through graduate school. Cathy is one of five sisters educated at an all-girls high school, which helped her find her voice and footing. Mike likes to joke that any character flaws he may possess are a result of his being educated by the Dominican Sisters, The Norbertine Fathers, and the Jesuits.
However, we did understand it takes money to provide the scholarships. We could help with financial assistance, and began supporting Notre Dame through the Partners Program. We continue to this day, and brag we are one of the few 72 year old couples with a child still in high school. This opportunity has allowed us to meet wonderful young women on their journey at Notre Dame. To see them blossom through their four years, gain confidence, learn how to surmount obstacles, and find their voice has been pure joy.
Over the years we both found time to get more involved. Cathy served on the Notre Dame Board of Trustees for 14 years. Going in, she did not know much about what the role would require, but through the wisdom, grace, patience, sharing, and thoughtfulness of her fellow Board members, she got her “sea-legs,” sort of like the students! Mike supplemented the role of Sr. Mary and Bob Grote and became a fundraiser and also the Chez Nous Benefit luncheon master of ceremonies. During Mike’s tenure as emcee, the benefit raised $100K for the first time. Thanks to Sr. Virginia O’Brien, S.U. and Director of Development Elizabeth Bixenman, Notre Dame’s fundraising has increased dramatically since that time.
“ We hope readers will consider supporting Notre Dame through the Partners Program, as we do. For us, it has been a 30+ year investment providing very satisfying returns. ”
We moved to NYC in the mid 1980s. Finding Notre Dame allowed us to give back, knowing we were helping young women. During the 1990s and the early 2000s, our life, careers, and travel compromised the amount of time we could devote to Notre Dame.
In 2016 we moved to Durham, North Carolina, and still enjoy returning in the spring for the benefit. We are always welcomed by Sr. Mary and Sr. Virginia with the Chez Nous spirit. We are humbled to have played a small part in the ongoing success of this wonderful institution. We hope readers will consider supporting Notre Dame through the Partners Program, as we do. For us, it has been a 30+ year investment providing very satisfying returns.
“ Finding Notre Dame allowed us to give back, knowing we were helping young women. ”
