Summer Fitness Program Continues to Turn Up the Heat for Weight Loss
08.08.11
By: Chey Parker, LARSS intern The 16-week "Summer Meltdown Challenge" is into week 12 and 18 NASA Langley participants are still working out and weighing in. "It's great," said Adrianne Flinn, challenge coordinator. "It's awesome to have 18 people still losing weight and achieving their goals." According to Flinn, the participants have lost about 90 pounds total. Cheryl Jones and Jennifer Keyes are leading the group in weight loss, tied at eight pounds each. "They do a very good job of exercising every day and following the nutritional advice we give them," Flinn said. "They have a lot of perseverance." Jones' goal for the year is to lose 50 pounds. She has already lost more than 25 pounds since January. "I made a lifetime change in eating and dieting," Jones said. "I knew I had to do this for myself. I wanted to be able to get on the floor and play with my grandchildren."

With the nutritional advice she receives from Flinn and the other Langley trainers, Jones and her husband eat mostly poultry, chicken and turkey and try to avoid frozen foods by eating fresh fruits and vegetables. "In the beginning, trying to fix two different meals was difficult," Jones explained. Flinn continues to send weekly emails with health tips to all of the participants. Every week, the tips have a new focus. Throughout the past few weeks, Flinn has sent emails with tips on avoiding careless snacking, portion control, exercising, interval strength training and eating more vegetables. "By the end of the challenge, they will have a tool box to refer to with all of these tips," explains Flinn. During the challenge, participants have a choice between cardio, strength or a mixed routine for their daily exercise. Over the past few weeks, the participants have been doing mostly cardio exercising or mixed routines.

"I rarely ever see just strength training for weight loss," says Adrianne. "But both strength and cardio routines are beneficial." Flinn plans to host the "Summer Meltdown Challenge" next year. "It would be nice to turn it into an annual challenge," says Flinn. "Everyone wants to get in shape for the summer."
