Howard University, Five Other Nursing Institutions to Launch Clinical Training Programs in Rwanda WASHINGTON -- Howard University Division of Nursing in the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences will be joining five nursing schools from across the nation to provide training and help to Rwandan schools of nursing. Beginning in the fall, Howard University and nursing schools at the University of Maryland, University of Texas, New York University, Duke University and the University of Illinois at Chicago will be sending health professionals to the African nation to provide training in the Rwandan schools. The clinicians will serve 11-month to seven-year stints providing education, clinical training, mentorship, training in nursing and midwifery, research experience and opportunities for advanced specialized study to Rwandan students and faculty. The schools will be working through the Rwanda Human Resources Health Program and the Clinton Health Initiative. Mary Hill, Ph.D., dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, is in Rwanda this week along with health representatives from the other schools to help plan the program. The schools are helping the African nation because Rwanda severely lacks highly qualified health professionals who can provide care and training. The institutions involved in the program will recruit for several open positions, including infection control nurse educator, clinical mentor and curriculum development advisor. Anne Brenner, coordinator of the Office of Global Health at the University of Maryland, said the program is still in the early planning stages and will be recruiting health professionals that have worked extensively in the field. “The majority of the positions are for high-level deans or experienced faculty,” Brenner said. Each institution has committed to providing a certain number of people for the positions in Rwanda. According to the University of Maryland’s School of Nursing’s website, the United States Nursing Academic Consortium for the Rwanda Human Resources for Health Program has been invited by the Rwanda Ministry of Health to assist in strengthening nursing education, faculty development, and professionalization of Rwandan nursing.
