NOTE FR O M T H E PRE SI D E NT On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors for the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, I welcome you to our 20152016 concert season. It is my privilege to serve as the President of the Board of Directors and to extend a THANK YOU for supporting the CSO. Whether you are a season subscriber or attending individual concerts, we are certain you will enjoy each and every performance of your Orchestra. We are honored to have Maestro William Intriligator continuing to lead the Orchestra, and to be a part of his enthusiasm and passion for classical music. We hope you are looking forward to the outstanding selection of guest artists who will help bring these performances to life. We cannot say enough about the professionalism and dedication of our orchestra members. As we have highlighted from time to time, there are countless hours of preparation and hundreds of miles travelled to bring this music to you. Please don’t hesitate to share your appreciation of their effort with them. The CSO continues to present the highest quality musical performances and world-class guest artists, and we also strive to collaborate with local arts organizations and educational institutions by showcasing aspiring, young, local and regional artists. By providing opportunities to work with our professional musicians, we hope to foster other cultural and educational events in the community, and thereby contribute to the quality of life for residents of Cheyenne. Music is the soul of our community and the Board of Directors continues its commitment to the long term growth of the CSO to ensure that we remain a strong and vibrant community member. Your support through ticket sales and donations, along with our concert sponsors help make this possible. We will, of course, continue to express our gratitude to our sponsors and donors, whose love of music and understanding of the importance of the CSO keeps us going. Thank you.

NOTE FR O M T H E MA E ST R O Welcome to the 2015-2016 Concert Season of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra! This orchestra is dedicated to bringing you thrilling live performances of great musical masterpieces that will inspire and move you. In addition, we regularly feature world-class musical soloists. I hope you will agree with me that there is something unique and special about experiencing a live orchestral concert with the CSO at the Cheyenne Civic Center. This season we have programmed wonderful music such as Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, Schubert’s “Great” C Major Symphony, Stravinsky’s “Firebird,” Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, Handel’s Messiah, Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. We will also feature familiar favorites ranging from Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate to Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. You will be treated to awe-inspiring virtuosity and musical poetry from our guest artists, including pianists Alpin Hong and Thomas Pandolfi, violinist Arnaud Sussmann, and soprano Esther Heidemann. You will also experience the En Avant Dance Studio performing with the orchestra on our January 2015 Masterpiece program. Don’t miss our Hausmusik home recitals, featuring guest pianists Alpin Hong and Thomas Pandolfi performing short programs in intimate settings where you can experience their musicality up close, visit with the artists, and enjoy free refreshments as well. Let our holiday pops concert, Home for the Holidays, usher in the holiday season for every member of your family! There is something unique and majestic about hearing the full Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, joined by many local guest performers, performing music for the holidays. This program is sure to lift your spirits! In March, the orchestra and the Cheyenne Chamber Singers, along with four superb vocal soloists, will present Handel’s complete Messiah. This musical masterpiece will be presented to the community as a Sacred Easter Concert, free of charge, through the generosity of the Eleni Demos Robinson Foundation, and we are very grateful for their support. In May, members of the orchestra and I will present Baroque in the Barn at the Sale Barn of the Wyoming Hereford Ranch. A Cheyenne tradition that is unique in the classical music world, this evening includes live performance of Baroque music in western wear as well as a chuckwagon-style dinner. Don’t miss it! We are also very grateful to the Wyoming Hereford Ranch for their support. And we are most grateful for you, our loyal audience. Your being here means a lot to us! On behalf of the orchestra musicians, Board of Directors, and staff, I want to thank you for joining us for tonight’s performance. Musically Yours,

M U SIC D I RECT O R An exuberant and passionate force on the podium, William Intriligator currently serves as Music Director and Conductor of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra and the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra in Iowa. Both these organizations have experienced tremendous growth during his tenure, as his musicianship, dedication, and leadership are catalysts for artistic excellence, audience development, and community engagement. As a guest conductor, Intriligator has led performances with many distinguished orchestras across the country, including those of Honolulu, Houston, Minnesota, Richmond, Saint Paul, Savannah, Syracuse, and Tulsa. Intriligator believes in the transformative power of a great orchestral performance, and he conducts in a variety of genres, including symphony, opera, choral, new music, and ballet. He is particularly gifted leading educational concerts and pops concerts. In 2013 he led the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra in a nationally syndicated PBS television concert special, “The Power of Music, featuring musical prodigy Ethan Bortnick. This program aired over 1,500 times on Public Television and is continuing to air nationally. Originally from Santa Monica, California, Intriligator graduated with highest honors in music from Princeton University. He then studied conducting in France and Germany and was Assistant Conductor of the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra. He returned to the U.S. to earn his masters and doctoral degrees in orchestral conducting at the University of Minnesota, where he conducted a full production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute at age 23. During his years training in Minnesota, Intriligator was on the conducting staff of the Minnesota Orchestra, where he led that orchestra in youth concerts and new music readings, as well as assisting with subscription concerts and national tours. He was also an Assistant Conductor of the Minnesota Opera and a guest conductor of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, leading that orchestra for five seasons in educational concerts, family concerts, regional tours, and concerts of new music. Intriligator was a conducting fellow at the Aspen Music Festival for two summers and also attended the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors. Intriligator resides in Dubuque with his wife Lisa and their four sons.

E T IQU ET T E Whether this is your first concert, or you are a seasoned veteran of the symphony, you may have questions concerning concert etiquette. Here are some frequently asked questions to help make your experience more enjoyable. What should I wear? Most concert-goers dress in business or business casual clothing. You might prefer to be a little more formal, particularly if it’s a special occasion, or you might prefer to be a little more casual; in other words, it’s your choice. When should I arrive? We try our best to begin all concerts on time. Therefore, we recommend that you try to arrive no later than fifteen minutes before the concert is scheduled to begin, which is 7:30 P.M. To help reduce distracting noises during the performances, there are designated pauses in each program when late arrivals will be seated. Unfortunately, some concerts have no late seating. If you have to leave a concert before its end, please do so between program works. When do I clap? If nobody claps when the piece is over, it probably isn’t. Many works in classical music have three or more movements or sections. A short pause usually falls between each of them. It has become customary over time not to clap during these short pauses. To find out the number of movements and corresponding number of pauses in a piece, turn to the program page in your program book. You will find that each work is subdivided by movement. After the last movement, applaud to your heart’s content. Still unsure? Don’t applaud until the Maestro faces the audience. What’s in the air? Perfume and colognes can be enchanting, but the person next to you may be asthmatic, allergic, or not enjoy the fragrance at all. It may be best to save those lovely aromas for less crowded areas, or go lightly with them. May I bring my cellular phone? Pagers, alarm watches and cellular phones should be turned off or set on vibrate before entering the theatre. Please contact the house manager before entering the theatre if emergency notification may be required. Please refrain from texting as it is distracting to other concert-goers. May I take pictures? No still cameras, video cameras or tape recorders are permitted at any CSO performance unless prior permission is obtained from the symphony. May I bring my children? This decision is yours to make and should be based on the individual child’s level of maturity. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. Musical chairs? We have all noticed there are empty seats in the Civic Center during a symphony concert. However, these seats may well belong to someone, whether it be a season subscriber who could not make it to the concert, or someone arriving late. As a courtesy to these people and those around them, please do not sit in any seats that appear to be unoccupied. It is always best to enjoy the performance from the seat you purchased. Are there accommodations for disabled patrons? Handicapped parking is available in the parking garage next to the Civic Center and curb-to-seat assistance is available upon request at the box office. Handicapped seating is offered on the main floor, with tickets available in all price ranges. Patrons with oxygen tanks are urged to use quiet, continuous flow models if at all possible. Hearing impaired devices may be obtained at the box office.

E XPERIEN CE A N D EX P L OR E Classic Conversations—Enhancing Your Concert Experience One hour before each Masterpiece Series concert Maestro Intriligator presents Classic Conversations, a unique musical experience in which he shares insights about the evening’s performance. The conductor may be joined by the guest artist. The maestro plays recorded excerpts from the music that will be performed that evening and points out what the audience should listen for, the historical context in which the music was composed, and the meaning behind the music. This information greatly adds to one’s appreciation and understanding of the performance. The audience is encouraged to ask questions and make comments about the performance. We also encourage you to read the program notes, which contain relevant biographical information about the composer and other historical information about the music. Classic Conversations is a very popular event, which is demonstrated by the fact that the number of attendees has greatly increased through the years. Many concert-goers are convinced they enjoy the programs more by attending these sessions. We are grateful to our Gold Business Partners for being the generous sponsors of Classic Conversations. An additional presentation, which takes place at noon on the Friday before each concert at Laramie County Library, is sponsored by all our Business Partners. Maestro Intriligator presents Tuna Fish & Peanut Butter Classic Conversations, an informal and informative hour of conversation. This program is free and open to everyone, whether or not they have a concert ticket. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about the music being played and have any questions answered. All are encouraged to bring lunch and a friend.

E DU C AT I O N A L O U T R E AC H “Giving the Gift of Music” Programs At the CSO, we believe in the power of music to transform communities in many ways. Early music education means students are learning skills that will prove beneficial for the rest of their lives- critical thinking skills, creativity, innovation, socialization and more. “It’s a GAS” (Guest Artists in the Schools) Bringing professional guest artists into K-12 music classrooms motivates, inspires, and teaches the virtue of discipline to students. Listening to and interacting with a professional artist helps students develop criteria for evaluating and achieving successful performances. “YES!” (Youth Educational Symphony) CSO’s annual YES! Concerts bring 5th and 6th grade students from Laramie County School District #1 and #2, parochial, private and home-schooled children to the Cheyenne Civic Center for two performances. Junior high and high school orchestra students also attend the concerts. “It’s COOL” (Conductor of the Orchestra Leads) The CSO conductor makes visits to elementary, junior high, high school, and college music classes. Presenting music as fun and rewarding has been the priority of Dr. Intriligator’s visits. 24

2 0 15 - 2016

E DU C AT I O N A L O U T R E AC H “Take a SEAT” (Students Enjoy a Ticket) With support from the CSO Foundation, approximately 600 free tickets are distributed throughout the season to area high school and college students enrolled in music programs. Concert admission is reduced for students so that they may attend live concerts for less than the cost of a movie. “FUSE” (Fine Arts Unlocking Student Excellence) • Art in Music—8-12th graders are challenged to imagine and create works of art based on music to be performed by the CSO at the annual YES! Concerts. Student art is displayed at the Cheyenne Civic Center and judged by a panel of experts. Awards are presented at the January Masterpiece concert. Participants and their families are invited to attend free of charge.

• Music in Words—CSO’s writing contest asks 3rd and 4th grade students, at LCSD #1 elementary schools to write a creative response to a selection from one of the season’s concerts. The submissions will be displayed at the Cheyenne Civic Center during the February Masterpiece concert for the audience to enjoy. Winners are acknowledged on stage and winning responses are printed in the concert program. Participants and their families are invited to attend free of charge. • Instrument Petting Zoo—Children of all ages can touch, play and hear the instruments of the orchestra up-close at instrument petting zoo events. Musicians and skilled volunteers are on hand to teach basic techniques and allow individuals to explore the many instruments that make up each family of the orchestra: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. 25

C SO FOU N DA T I O N Don’t wait until you get to Heaven to hear beautiful music! If you treasure the music of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, please join the efforts of those who are working to ensure the Symphony’s grand performances will continue to be heard now and into the future. Please consider making a gift to the Foundation’s Permanent Endowment Fund. The Foundation Board is seeking to create an Endowment totaling $2,000,000 or more to provide grant support for the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra. The earnings realized from the Endowment Fund are used to support Orchestra performances and its educational outreach programs. Since its reorganization in 1998, the Foundation’s Endowment has grown from $130,000 to more than $1.6 million. Only a portion of the Endowment earnings are distributed each year; the rest is reinvested for future growth. Because of the support of many caring donors, the growth of the Foundation’s Endowment has enabled the Foundation to grant critically needed funding. Such wonderful support is made possible solely through the generous gifts from those who love the Symphony’s music. Your gift, whether it be in the form of cash, stocks or bonds, through your will, living trust or other options, will help assure the viability of the Orchestra, and can help you realize significant tax savings. The Foundation will be pleased to work with you to set up the transfer of any asset you choose to gift. Gifts of $1,000 or more will be formally recognized on the Foundation’s “Sound Investment” donor recognition wall display located in the Cheyenne Civic Center lobby. At the time of publication, the following Foundation supporters, through their generous gifts, have helped provide a lasting musical and educational legacy now and in the future. The Foundation thanks these visionary individuals. For more information on how you can make a difference and help the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra by gifting to the Foundation, call the CSO office at 307-778-8561 or contact any Foundation Board member.

Cheyenne Symphony Foundation Mission The Cheyenne Symphony Foundation, a non-profit corporation, is operated exclusively for the benefit of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra. The Foundation’s purpose is to establish a permanent endowment to provide grant support to ensure the continuance of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra.
