2014 - 2015

NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT As we begin our 2014-2015 concert season, the entire Board of Directors for the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra THANK YOU for being a part of the CSO. Whether you are a season subscriber or attending individual concerts, we are certain you will enjoy each and every performance of the Orchestra. Once again this year, Maestro William Intriligator will lead the Orchestra, and the music performed will come alive with a great energy and passion. We also have a number of outstanding guest artists who will perform for your listening pleasure. The high degree of dedication and skill that each orchestra member brings to every performance, along with the expertise of each guest artist, allows each of us to experience music in a manner that words cannot describe. For every moment they are on stage in front of you, there are hundreds and hundreds of hours of preparation, and many of our musicians come from many miles away to perform for you. In celebration of our Diamond Anniversary, we were inspired to showcase each section and each virtuosic principal player. (I invite you to listen for these musical moments throughout the season.) As part of our ongoing goal to deepen collaborations with local arts organizations and educational institutions, we will proudly showcase aspiring, young guest performers from the Cheyenne and Laramie communities as well as regional professional guest artists. This philosophy remains true to our mission to “act as a catalyst for other cultural and educational events contributing to the quality of life for residents of Cheyenne and the surrounding areas.” Most of all, we hope you enjoy the concerts! The Board of Directors is working diligently to ensure that the CSO remains a strong and vibrant community member. Music is the soul of our community and the Board is committed to the long term growth of the CSO. As you know, ticket sales cover only a portion of the overall expense of operating the orchestra. We are indebted to our sponsors and donors who love music and who realize the importance the CSO plays in the Community’s well-being. Thank you.

2014 - 2015

NOTE FROM THE MAESTRO Welcome to the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra! We have a long tradition of bringing outstanding musical performances to Cheyenne. In fact, this year we celebrate our 60th “Diamond” Anniversary with a terrific line up of musical masterpieces and spectacular guest artists. Whether this is your first time joining us or you’ve been with us since the beginning, we welcome you to tonight’s performance and thank you for supporting the orchestra. This season we have programmed music to inspire you, to uplift you, and to transport you. Music such as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and his “Emperor” Piano Concerto, Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony, Haydn’s “Oxford” Symphony, Respighi’s Pines of Rome, and Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony and Capriccio Italien. We also welcome world-class guest artists to join the orchestra. Virtuosos such as pianists Keenan Reesor and Antonio Pompa-Baldi, violinists Janet Sung and Michael Ludwig, as well as vocal soloists from the region and choruses from Cheyenne and Laramie. Don’t miss our Hausmusik home recitals, featuring pianists Keenan Reesor and Antonio Pompa-Baldi, and violinist Michael Ludwig performing short programs in intimate settings where you can visit with the artists and enjoy free refreshments as well. Let our holiday pops concert, Home for the Holidays, usher in the holiday season for every member of your family! There is something unique and majestic about hearing the full Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra performing music for the holidays. This year the orchestra is joined by vocal soloists, the Cheyenne All-City Children’s Chorus, and the En Avant Dance Studio. This program is sure to lift your spirits! Truly, the music we perform has the power to move us. It can bring us together. I believe it makes each of us better for hearing it and thereby makes the world a better place. The orchestra musicians and I have devoted our lives to the art of making music. Our goal is to take the great messages in these musical works and pass them on to you. The orchestra would be nothing without you, our audience. So, on behalf of the orchestra members, the CSO Board of Directors, and the CSO staff, let me thank you once again for joining us! Musically Yours,

MUSIC DIRECTOR “An exuberant and passionate force on the podium,” William Intriligator currently serves as Music Director and Conductor of both the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra in Wyoming and the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra in Iowa. As a guest conductor, he has led performances with many distinguished orchestras across the country, including those of Honolulu, Houston, Minnesota, Richmond, Saint Paul, Savannah, Syracuse, and Tulsa. Intriligator is a Music Director whose dedication and leadership is a catalyst for artistic growth and organizational success. He is recognized for his innovative programming, audience development, and community engagement. Originally from Santa Monica, California, Intriligator’s primary instrument was oboe. He also played clarinet, violin, and piano before turning to conducting. He graduated with highest honors in music from Princeton University, after which he studied conducting in France and Germany. He was also Assistant Conductor of the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra during that time. He returned to the U.S. to earn his masters and doctoral degrees in conducting at the University of Minnesota, where he conducted a full production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute at age 23. His doctoral thesis explored the influence of early German Romantic authors and philosophers on the orchestral works of Robert Schumann. During his years in Minnesota, Intriligator was on the conducting staff of the Minnesota Orchestra, where he led that orchestra in youth concerts and new music readings, as well as assisting with subscription concerts and national tours. He was also Assistant Conductor of the Minnesota Opera, Music Director of the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, and Music Director of the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra. A regular guest conductor of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) for five years, he led the SPCO in educational concerts, family concerts, regional tours, and concerts of new music. His principal conducting teachers were Charles Bruck, Keith Clark, Michael Gielen, Murry Sidlin, Claudio Spies, Christian Thielemann, and David Zinman. He was a conducting fellow at the Aspen Music Festival for two summers and attended the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors four summers. Intriligator believes that music is one of life’s greatest blessings. He believes that, in our own ways, we are all musicians and music-lovers. He also believes in the transformative power of a great orchestral performance. His professional and personal mission is to create such performances for increasing numbers of people, and, by doing so, to inspire others, to bring people together, and to make the world a better place. Intriligator resides in Dubuque with his wife Lisa and their four sons. 11

ETIQUETTE Whether this is your first concert, or you are a seasoned veteran of the symphony, you may have questions concerning concert etiquette. Here are some frequently asked questions to help make your experience more enjoyable. What should I wear? Most concert-goers dress in business or business casual clothing. You might prefer to be a little more formal, particularly if it’s a special occasion, or you might prefer to be a little more casual; in other words, it’s your choice. When should I arrive? We try our best to begin all concerts on time. Therefore, we recommend that you try to arrive no later than fifteen minutes before the concert is scheduled to begin, which is 7:30 P.M. To help reduce distracting noises during the performances, there are designated pauses in each program when late arrivals will be seated. Unfortunately, some concerts have no late seating. If you have to leave a concert before its end, please do so between program works. When do I clap? Many works in classical music have three or more movements or sections. A short pause usually falls between each of them. It has become customary over time not to clap during these short pauses. To find out the number of movements and corresponding number of pauses in a piece, turn to the program page in your program book. After the last movement, applaud to your heart’s content. Still unsure? Don’t applaud until the Maestro faces the audience. What’s in the air? Perfume and colognes can be enchanting, but the person next to you may be asthmatic, allergic, or not enjoy the fragrance at all. It may be best to save those lovely aromas for less crowded areas, or go lightly with them. May I bring my cellular phone? Pagers, alarm watches and cellular phones should be turned off or set on vibrate before entering the theatre. Please contact the house manager before entering the theatre if emergency notification may be required. Please refrain from texting as it is distracting to other concert-goers. May I take pictures? No cell phones, cameras or recording devices are permitted at any CSO performance unless prior permission is obtained from the symphony. May I bring my children? This decision is yours to make and should be based on the individual child’s level of maturity. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Musical chairs? We have all noticed there are empty seats in the Civic Center during a symphony concert. However, these seats may well belong to someone, whether it be a season subscriber who could not make it to the concert, or someone arriving late. As a courtesy to these people and those around them, please do not sit in any seats that appear to be unoccupied. It is always best to enjoy the performance from the seat you purchased. Are there accommodations for disabled patrons? Handicapped parking is available in the parking garage next to the Civic Center and curb-to-seat assistance is available upon request at the box office. Handicapped seating is offered on the main floor, with tickets available in all price ranges. Patrons with oxygen tanks are urged to use quiet, continuous flow models if at all possible. Hearing impaired devices may be obtained at the box office. 15

E D U C AT I O N A L OUTREACH More than 20 years ago, as the only professional performing arts organization in southern Wyoming, the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra (CSO) seized the opportunity to help educate youth in the Cheyenne area. Today the CSO implements five unique educational programs to provide opportunities for students of all ages, in partnership with Laramie County School Districts #1 and #2. The “Giving the Gift of Music” program goals are three-fold: 1) expose students to the performance of professional musicians in classroom and concert settings; 2) provide engaging and unique musical programs that generate interest in music, history and relevant social issues; and 3) support the musical education being offered in the local school systems by bringing musical advancement to interested music students of all ages. In the 2014-2015 Season, our “Giving the Gift of Music” educational programs include: “It’s a GAS” (Guest Artists in the Schools)–Bringing professional guest artists into the classrooms motivates, inspires, and teaches the virtue of discipline to students. Listening to and interacting with a professional artist helps students develop criteria for evaluating and achieving successful performances. “YES!” (Youth Educational Symphony)–CSO’s annual YES! Concerts bring 5th and 6th grade students from Laramie County School District #1 and #2, parochial, private and home-schooled children to the Cheyenne Civic Center for two performances. Junior high and high school orchestra students also attend the concerts. This part of the program focuses on valuable connections between history, cultural literacy and music appreciation as well as basics about symphony orchestras and concert etiquette. “It’s COOL” (Conductor of the Orchestra Leads)–The CSO conductor makes visits to elementary, junior high, high school, and LCCC music, band, and orchestra classes. Teaching students the importance of choosing an instrument they love to play and making it fun has been the priority of Dr. Intriligator’s visits. The conductor conveys lessons learned from sticking with an instrument throughout the school years and the value of those skills later in life. In addition, when visiting established band and orchestra classes, the conductor provides professional feed-back on their performance, helping them to achieve greater musical results. 28

28

2014 - 2015

E D U C AT I O N A L OUTREACH “Take a SEAT” (Students Enjoy a Ticket)–Approximately 600 free tickets are distributed throughout the season to area high-school and college students. CSO subsidizes concert admission for students so that they may attend for less than the cost of a movie. Holiday Pops concert tickets are subsidized even further to showcase CSO’s collaboration with local youth choirs and dancers. Attending youth experience performances by their peers and the accessible repertoire helps to nurture a new generation of concert-goers. “FUSE” (Fine Arts Unlocking Student Excellence)–Recent research shows that skills developed in the music classroom can help students to achieve in other areas. These programs reach students outside the music classroom and help them to make connections across the disciplines. • “Art in Music”–8th through12th graders are challenged to imagine and create works of art based on music performed by the CSO at the annual YES! Concerts. Student art is displayed each January at the Cheyenne Civic Center. CSO recruits volunteer adjudicators who select winners and present prizes on stage at the concert. These students and their family members receive vouchers to attend the concert at no cost. • “Music in Words”–CSO’s writing contest asks 3rd and 4th grade students, at LCSD #1 and #2 elementary schools to write a creative response to a selection from one of the season’s concerts. The submissions are displayed at the Cheyenne Civic Center during the concert for the audience to enjoy. Winners are acknowledged on stage and winning responses are printed in the program. Students and their family members receive vouchers to attend the concert at no cost. 29

ART IN MUSIC Wyoming Hereford Ranch Sloan and Anna Marie Hales of the Wyoming Hereford Ranch are generous corporate sponsors of the Symphony. In addition to providing significant financial assistance, they graciously open their home for several annual Symphony events, including Hausmusik and Baroque in the Barn. The Wyoming Hereford Ranch was established in 1883 by Alexander Swan. Utilizing capital from Scotland, he created a cattle empire, consisting of one million acres of land with over hundred thousand head of cattle. Experimentally, he imported Herefords from England and demonstrated the efficiency of the breed in the high plains of North America. Today, Wyoming Hereford Ranch is the oldest, continuous registered livestock operation in the United States. In spite of inclement weather, sparse grazing and the vagaries of the cattle market, WHR has not only survived, but has developed a worldwide reputation for excellence. The Hales family is the seventh owner of the WHR, and the first to reside on the premises. The ranch’s headquarters complex is the host site for over sixty events each year. The Hales welcome visitors to their home to reflect on the glories of yesteryear, and to envision the promise of the future. Sloan and Anna Marie’s generosity and commitment to enhancing all of our lives has been recognized by several organizations. In 2002, the Hales were honored by the Wyoming Arts Council for their contribution to the arts. They also have been honored by the Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce as the “Citizens of the Year.” They truly exemplify Winston Churchill’s observation that “We make a living by what we earn, but we make a life by what we give.”

McDonald's Restaurants McDonald’s of Cheyenne, Laramie and Rawlins are proud to continue their support of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra as an underwriter of the “Art in Music Program.” Exposing students to the music of the Masters, and helping them to express themselves through their artwork is our goal. A commitment of “giving back” to our communities has played a major role as business owners in Wyoming for 33 years. Helping develop young people in all aspects of life is an important part of our business environment. We applaud the Laramie County School District No. 1 Art Program for continuing to raise the level of quality art that is produced and displayed. Jack and Suzanne Preiss look forward to another season of outstanding symphony performances! Our best wishes to Maestro William Intriligator, Conductor and Music Director, and the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra. 30

SYMPHONY FOUNDATION Don’t wait until you get to Heaven to hear beautiful music! If you treasure the music of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, please join the efforts of those who are working to ensure the Symphony’s grand performances will continue to be heard now and into the future. Please consider making a gift to the Foundation’s Permanent Endowment Fund. The Foundation Board is seeking to create an Endowment totaling $2,000,000 or more to provide grant support for the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra. The earnings realized from the Endowment Fund are used to support Orchestra performances and its educational outreach programs. Since its reorganization in 1998, the Foundation’s Endowment has grown from $130,000 to more than $1.6 million. Only a portion of the Endowment earnings are distributed each year; the rest is reinvested for future growth. Because of the support of many caring donors, the growth of the Foundation’s Endowment has enabled the Foundation to grant critically needed funding. Such wonderful support is made possible solely through the generous gifts from those who love the Symphony’s music. Your gift, whether it be in the form of cash, stocks or bonds, through your will, living trust or other options, will help assure the viability of the Orchestra, and can help you realize significant tax savings. The Foundation will be pleased to work with you to set up the transfer of any asset you choose to gift. Gifts of $1,000 or more will be formally recognized on the Foundation’s “Sound Investment” donor recognition wall display located in the Cheyenne Civic Center lobby. At the time of publication, the following Foundation supporters, through their generous gifts, have helped provide a lasting musical and educational legacy now and in the future. The Foundation thanks these visionary individuals. For more information on how you can make a difference and help the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra by gifting to the Foundation, call the CSO office at 307-778-8561 or contact any Foundation Board member.

Cheyenne Symphony Foundation Mission The Cheyenne Symphony Foundation, a non-profit corporation, is operated exclusively for the benefit of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra. The Foundation’s purpose is to establish a permanent endowment to provide grant support to ensure the continuance of the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra.
