It is a place where local government, private citizens and businesses are partners, working together to provide innovative solutions for the challenges facing the city as it grows. The city council believes that you can live and work in the same community, while keeping a rural feel with economic vitality. Since Covington’s incorporation on August 31, 1997, the city has grown so rapidly from 12,500 to 17,575 today. Covington is developing as a new center for commerce. It is a great place for jobs and businesses along with residential property opportunities including a wide range of single family housing from affordable to luxury. While the council encourages economic development, it also believes that the participation of social service programs at a local level are the true soul of the city, recognizing that quality of life is a necessity rather than an unattainable goal. The Covington Parks and Recreation Department is proud to serve the residents of Covington by offering a wide range of quality activities and events for the entire family and well-maintained parks and trails. We understand that quality of life is vital to the residents of Covington. From Covington’s beginning, parks and recreational pursuits have been important to the community’s quality of life, and this tradition has endured. CEDAR CREEK PARK
30 acres of the 110 acre Cedar Creek Park were acquired by the City of Covington in 2003 with the assistance of a King County Conservation Futures Grant. The park features high quality wetlands, salmon bearing creek, trails and diverse habitat areas. The additional 80 acres of the park is currently owned by King County. CEDAR VALLEY NATURAL AREA - 26020 186th Place SE The 6.75 acre natural area was acquired from King County in 2002. COVINGTON AQUATIC CENTER- 18230 SE 240th The Covington Aquatic Center was acquired from King County in 2004. The facility contains a 25-meter indoor pool with water slide and room available for rentals. For scheduling and information call 425-413-POOL (7665). COVINGTON COMMUNITY PARK – formerly known as 180th/240th Street Park. This park is located at the southwest corner of 180th and 240th streets. The property features rolling pastures with mature forest and trails. The master plan for the park was adopted in February 2009. Design for the phase one soccer field is underway. Construction is planned for 2011. CRYSTAL VIEW PARK - 25412 170th Place SE Crystal View Park was Covington’s first park. The 2.2 acre parcel was acquired from King County in 2000 and constructed in 2003. It features a half basketball court, play equipment and picnic tables. EVERGREEN PARK - 19801 SE 262nd Street Evergreen Park was obtained from King County in 2000. When completed, the park will feature: Pre-school age appropriate play equipment, natural areas and a walking path. FRIENDSHIP PARK - 15808 SE 254th Place Friendship Park opened in 2004. The park is a converted storm water pond. The .6 acre park features a basketball court, picnic area, children’s play equipment, walking path and grassy area for informal play. 253.631.6117 www.covingtonchamber.org 9
GERRY CRICK SKATE PARK - 25064 164th Avenue SE The skate park opened in 2004. It features a 70 foot by 100 foot skating area with above ground ramps and a sani-can type rest room. The park is named in honor of a former member of the Parks and Recreation Commission who passed away in 2007. There is no on site parking available. JENKINS CREEK PARK - 18050 SE 267th Place Jenkins Creek Park was transferred from King County to the City of Covington in 2003. The 23 acre park features: Walking trails and natural areas. JENKINS CREEK REGIONAL TRAIL 18400 SE 267th Place - access from the west end of Timberlane Drive SE and from east end of SE 264th Place. This 23-acre park is centrally located in the city. Features include a spring fed pond, natural areas, walking trails, picnic tables and park benches. The upper meadow and park features on the east side of the park are open. The lower meadow on the west side of the park is currently closed to public access. The park was transferred from King County to the City in 2003. SOOS CREEK PARK AND TRAIL – King County Parks King County continues to operate the regional trail system through the park. The 183 acre park acts as an urban separator between Kent and Covington providing critical habitat areas. THE RESERVE The Reserve is a regional storm water facility. It has a maintenance access road surrounding the pond that also serves as a half-mile loop walking trail. There are benches and picnic tables along the trail. ADOPT A PARK The objective of the Adopt a Park program is to encourage community involvement, support, and pride for parks and the community. By working together, we can make a positive contribution to our community and strengthen the spirit of Covington. Flaming Geyser State Park
Winter: 8 a.m. to dusk. The park is open year round for camping and day use.

The park’s most unique feature is its “geysers” (methane seeps). Park activities include whitewater rafting and model airplane flying. The park is open year round for day use only. Summer: 8 a.m. to dusk. Winter: 8 a.m. to dusk. Model airplane flying hours: Saturdays and Sundays - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or dusk (whichever is earliest); Mondays through Thursdays - 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. or dusk (whichever is earliest); Fridays - 10 a.m. to dusk, for electric or nonpowered flight only.
Kanaskat/Palmer State Park 32101 Kanaskat-Cumberland Rd., Ravensdale, WA 98051 360-902-8844 Kanaskat-Palmer State Park is a 320-acre camping park on a small, low plateau in a natural forest setting. The park has two miles of shorelines on the Green River. Boat and raft launching is by hand only. River rafting and kayaking down the Green River Gorge is for expert-level enthusiasts only. Shoreline activities include nature appreciation, trout fishing and picnicking. Summer: 8 a.m. to dusk.
Nolte State Park 36921 Veazie-Cumberland Rd. Enumclaw, WA 98022 360-825-4646 Nolte State Park is a 117-acre day-use park with 7,174 feet of freshwater shoreline on Deep Lake in the Green River Gorge. Covered with forests and blessed with water, the land was a resort for many years before it was donated to State Parks. Summer: 8 a.m. to dusk. Winter: Closed Oct. 1, reopens April 1.

Emergency Preparedness Where will you be when disaster strikes? In the Car • At School • At Home • At work How will you find each other? Will you know if your children are safe?
Your Family Disaster Plan
Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. It can force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services (water, gas, electricity or telephones) were cut off? Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone right away. Families can, and do, cope with disaster by preparing in advance and working together as a team. Follow the steps listed here to create your family’s disaster plan. Knowing what to do is your best protection and your responsibility.
4 Steps to Safety
1. Find out what could happen to you. Contact your local emergency management or civil defense office and American Red Cross chapter and be prepared to take notes: Ask what types of disasters are most likely to happen. Request information on how to prepare for each. Learn about your community’s warning signals: what they sound like and what you should do when you hear them. Ask about animal care after a disaster. Animals may not be allowed inside emergency shelters due to health regulations. Find out how to help elderly or disabled persons, if needed. Next, find out about the disaster plans at your workplace, your children’s school or day care center and other places where your family spends time. 2. Create a Disaster Plan Meet with your family and discuss why you need to prepare for a disaster. Explain the dangers of fire, severe weather and earthquakes to children. Plan to share responsibilities and work together as a team. Discuss the types of disasters that are most likely to happen. Explain what to do in each case. Pick two places to meet: • Right outside your home in case of a sudden emergency • Outside your neighborhood in case you can’t return home. Everyone must know the address and phone number. Ask an out-of-state friend to be your “family contact.” After a disaster, it’s often easier to call long distance. Other
family members should call this person and tell them where they are. Everyone must know your contact’s phone number. Discuss what to do in a evacuation. Plan how to take care of your pets.
3. Complete this checklist. Post emergency telephone numbers by the phones (fire, police, ambulance, etc.) Teach children how and when to call 911 or your local Emergency Medical Services number for emergency help. Show each family member how and when to turn off the water, gas, and electricity at the main switches. Check to determine if you have adequate insurance coverage. Teach each family member how to use the fire extinguisher (ABC type), and show them where it’s kept. Install smoke detectors on each level of your home, especially near bedrooms. Conduct a home hazard hunt. Stock emergency supplies and assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit. Take a Red Cross first aid and CPR class. Determine the best escape routes from your home. Find two ways out of each room. Find the safe spots in your home for each type of disaster. 4. Practice and maintain your plan. Quiz your kids every six months so they remember what to do. Conduct fire and emergency evacuation drills. Replace stored water every three months and stored food every six months. Test and recharge your fire extinguisher(s) according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Test your smoke detectors monthly and change the batteries at least once a year.
EARTHQUAKE: DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON!
Learn what to do during an earthquake, whether you’re at home, at work, at school or just out and about. Taking the proper actions, such as “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”, can save lives and reduce your risk of death or injury. During earthquakes, drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on to it firmly. Be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors
Working with neighbors can save lives and property. Meet with your neighbors to plan how the neighborhood could work together after a disaster until help arrives. If you’re a member of a neighborhood organization, introduce disaster preparedness as a new activity. Know your neighbors’ special needs (e.g. medical, technical) and consider how you could help neighbors who have special needs, such as disabled and elderly persons. Make plans for child care in case parents can’t get home.
Emergency Supplies
Keep enough supplies in your home to meet your needs for at least five days. Assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit with items you may need in an evacuation. Store these supplies in sturdy, easy-to-carry containers such as backpacks, duffle bags or covered trash containers. Water (one gallon per person per day) and chlorine bleach to purify it. Store water in sealed, unbreakable containers. Mark the storage dates and replace every six months. Emergency food and beverage supply (nonperishable food and juices.). A hand can opener, cooking equipment, fuel for alternate cooking and heating devices. A change of clothing for each person in the family, rain gear, sturdy shoes. First aid kit, prescription medicine, and extra pair of eye glasses. Flashlights, portable radio with batteries, matches, candles. Credit cards, cash and an extra set of car keys. A list of important family information including the style & serial number of medical devices such as pacemakers. Special needs for infants, the elderly, and disabled. Sanitation supplies (plastic trash bags, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, toilet paper, newspaper, a camp shovel.) Keep important family documents in a waterproof container. Keep a smaller kit in the trunk of your car.
Evacuation
Evacuate immediately if told to do so: Listen to your battery-powered radio and follow the instructions of local emergency officials. Wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes. Take your Disaster Supplies Kit. Lock your home. Use travel routes specified by local authorities – don’t use shortcuts because certain areas may be impassable or dangerous. Home Hazard Hunt
During a disaster, ordinary objects in your home can cause injury or damage. Anything that can move, fall, break or cause a fire is a home hazard. For example, a hot water heater or a bookshelf can fall. Inspect your home at least once a year and fix potential hazards. Contact your local fire department to learn about home fire hazards.
Food and Water
Be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for up to five days. Take emergency drinking water from ice cubes, water heater, and canned fruits and vegetables. Don’t drink unbottled water (including municipal tap water) until it has been strained with a clean cloth and treated. To treat water add ten drops of chlorine bleach to each gallon of water, mix well, and let stand for about 30 minutes. Frozen foods will last from 48 to 72 hours if the freezer is full and the door stays closed. Eat perishable foods first. Discard all open food and beverages that may have been contaminated. Cook on portable grills, but only outdoors.
Utilities
Electricity Turn off electric ONLY if you see sparks or a fallen wire. Find the main circuit box, usually on the outside of the house. Locate the main circuit breaker or fuse. Switch the circuit breaker to the off position, or pull out the fuse. Have electrical service restored by a local supplier or contractor. Gas If you smell gas, evacuate the house. Don’t use the phone, light switches, or electrical appliances, or do anything that will cause sparks. Go to a phone booth or neighbors house and report the leak to the gas company. Let the gas company repair the leak and turn the gas back on. Water Find the water shut-off valve inside the house (located where the water line enters the building). Turn the valve in the direction of the arrow, usually clockwise. If necessary (and possible), shut off the main water valve outside your home. It may be next to the meter in a concrete box in the sidewalk. When the danger has passed, have water service restored by a local supplier.

Tahoma National Cemetery Tahoma is the first national cemetery in Washington, comprised of 160 acres, adjacent to Tahoma High School. The name “Tahoma” was used by the Klickitat indians as their name for Mt. Rainier, the highest peak in Washington. Tahoma provides a dignified burial place for vetarans and dependents and serves as a national shrine. It is managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Memorial walkway containing 28 memorials that commemorate soldiers of various 20th century wars, donated by various service organizations is located at the northeast corner of the walkway by the POW-MIA flag. A Blue Star Memorial is located north of the Public Information Center. The marker was originally part of a banner that families displayed in their homes during the 1940s to signify that they had a loved one fighting in World War II. Today, the marker honors all veterans.

Sergeant Chapman was a communications specialist with the 1st Special Forces Group at Fort Lewis, Wash. (Section 6, Grave 33). Francis Agnes -- former POW (1941 to 1945), survivor of the Bataan Death March, founder of the Tahoma National Cemetery Support Group (Section 24, Grave 717).
