BY MIKE CARTER Chetwynd Echo Reporter –––––––––––––– CHETWYND- School District 59 continues to develop a plan to find savings and efficiencies in its busing system in light of the $750,000 cut to the district’s transportation budget announced by the provincial government last month.

The cuts are equivalent to a 23 per cent reduction to the $3.3 million the district had received in the past.

Given the magnitude of the cuts, the district engaged a consultant to conduct a comprehensive review of its transportation services with a focus on identifying opportuni-

ties to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of services to realize savings in the operation.

The final report was submitted last week.

parents of students attending Chetwynd schools pay a fee of $20/month and $50 per family. “Based on the transportation review there will be fees implemented for the busing of Chetwynd students,�

School District 59 communications representative Candy Clouthier said. “The schedule on in-town busing won't change.�

Clouthier explained that currently, busing is provided for high school students from three locations in town from November 1 to March 31, and elementary school students are provided free busing between school locations for the full school year. “It won't be free [anymore],� she said. “But it won't change the service it's not going to increase or decrease the service that's currently being provided, there will just be a cost to it.�

Along with the fees, SD 59 announced that they would not be creating new routes for students attending schools outside of their catchment area. This means students attending Chetwynd’s two “schools of choice� – French immersion programs at Ecole Windrem Elementary and the recently approved Montessori school at Don Titus Elementary – will

have to find alternative transportation where existing routes do not exist. “There will be no route deviations for students not riding to their catcharea schools,� ment Clouthier said, “this will include French immersion students. There won't be any changes made for Montessori because it will [also] be a school of choice, same as French immersion is, and so the same rules would apply.�

Couthier went on to explain that if students attending Windrem or Don Titus Elementary were able to access an existing route to their school, they would be able to ride the bus. “If [there is] an existing route, obviously we would transport them. So we're not going to create new routes for students outside of the catchment areas. These students will

still be able to ride the bus, but will have to access the service on an existing route. No transportation assistance fund will be available to these students.�

As for the four-day school week, that is a big question mark at this point, Clouthier said. “We are deferring some of the proposed measures pending the outcome of the referendum in October 2014, the rural schools review and discussions with other partners. The idea of a four-day week was really only mentioned as a possibility. There actually is not a proposed four-day week anywhere; it was just given as one of the options that could be looked at in the rural areas. The way I remember it being talked about at the meeting was just to say that it is one thing [we] could look at in the rural schools.�

Run for Recovery wraps up today in FSJ

BY MIKE CARTER Chetwynd Echo Reporter –––––––––––––– CHETWYND- Long-distance runner Wendy Brown has a goal that she is not willing to give up: qualifying for the Boston marathon.

But in the meantime, she is helping others achieve their goals by running 327 kilometres in support of the Northern Lights Recovery Centre Society (NLRCS), raising awareness and funds for a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre for the Peace River region.

On Thursday last week, Brown spent the night in Chetwynd before sprinting off to Dawson Creek.

Today, Brown is on the home stretch.

After overnighting near the old Kiskatinaw Bridge and detouring through construction, she will run through the rain past Taylor and on into Fort St. John for the final welcome at the North Peace Cultural Centre.

While in Chetwynd last week, Brown sat down with the Chetwynd Echo for an interview in her support vehicle, an RV donated by Fort St. John electrical contractors,

12.5 and 15 miles. Those were my turnaround points; I called them my graduation levels. Once I got comfortable enough at the first marker, I would graduate to the next marker and then I would do the same up until 15 which is 30 km, and that was my goal was to run 30 kilometres a day.”

The run was supposed to take two weeks, “but it kind of looks like it might

take me between eleven or twelve days,” she said.

“I told myself yesterday, just accept that you can do this, quit trying to fight it and accept that the pace you are at is your pace, there is no way you can slow down, even though I have been trying for the past 5 days, I can't. I tried Please see "BROWN," page 6

he annual Fraser Institute Secondary School rankings were released over the weekend and to be honest, the numbers locally kinda freak me out.

Chetwynd Secondary School received the second lowest rank in the

province, a 1.7 out of 10.

CSS was followed in the Fraser Institute ranking by St. John's International in Vancouver, with a 0.4 ranking, and three other schools that did not provide enough data to be measured.

According to the Fraser Institute, the report "collects a variety of relevant, objective indicators of school performance into one, easily accessible public document so that anyone can analyze and com-

I, however, disagree. I see it as a giant test for all schools. And just like real school tests, if you don't prepare, you score low or you fail. See what I'm getting at?

their noses to the grindstone - and they had better up that rank the following year. He treated the results the same ever time and his school has consistently been creeping up the list, now ranking high up the list in the 60's. In fact, they consistently rate in the top 50.

The point is, why argue the ratings? Why not use the information to try to better your school community and the education given and received?

Cosmetic pesticide use is stupid

To the Editor: Chetwynd has attracted the attention of L. Hepworth, president and lobbyist for various makers of Herbicides and Pesticides He misses the point as we are opposed to the spraying poisons on dandelions.

He must have reached a new high by stating spraying protects health and the invasion of rats. He goes on to say that Health Canada carries out 200 tests on a product. Not true.

Westcoast news article March 2013, heading: “Pesticides not worth the risk.”

Quote: "doctors and nurses want BC people to think about whether lawns and bug free plants are worth the risk of Cancer, birth defects or neurological disorders such as Parkinsons or Alzheimer diseases."

Gideon Forem, executive of Canadian Association of physicians stated that it is baffling why BC is not following six other provinces that banned lawn pesticides. He added that research on health risks is strong and that science is finding an ominous picture.

Dr. Oz , TV show, Prov. June 2013 stated that since 1997 an increase of 92 per cent in women and 66 per cent in men are dying from ALS, Parkinsons, Alzheimer and dementia in younger ages. He states among other causes, an increased petro-chemical industry, pollution, chemical additives and pesticides are at fault.

Canada has set higher allowable limits on Pesticides than the European union.

Many Pesticides are approved in Canada that are banned in other countries.

Letter May 30/07 from William King, Chief of Staff, Prime ministers office states "Pesticides are approved for registration or continued use by Health

Canada only when the use results in an acceptable level of risk to health and the environment and acceptable within the Canadian context." Lots of manouvering room here. There is no acceptable risk to Health or Environment especially when dealing with cosmetic spraying of lawns.

According to the book Cancer-Gate the incidence of cancer has exploded to epidemic proportions. The doctor author says people are now exposed to a wide range of industrial carcinogens in Air, Water, and Food.

Jack Layton and several other politicians tested for 50 chemicals and toxins in their bodies. He died from cancer.

Canada has one of the highest pollution rankings in the world… despite Health Canada.

To summarize: Sierra Club Canada, Dr. Oz, Gideon Forem-Canadian, ass. physicians. Cancer-Gate all state toxins, chemicals in food-, air, water have impacted health to an alarming degree.

Then we have; Lorne Hepworth, president of a lobby group on behalf of the chemical and manufacturing industry, who states cosmetic spraying is safe and will keep rats from invading.

In my opinion cosmetic spraying of dandelions in Chetwynd, if researched adequately, would be found to be stupid, jeopardizing health, particularly children. Time for Chetwynd Council to treat health above cosmetics and not cater to a few supporters. Chetwynd already has an alarming Cancer rate without adding to it. Council should be sophisticated enough not to accept the word of a lobbyist about the safety of herbicide companies that he is lobbying for.

and tried to slow down, I even told them that I was thinking about putting a bungee cord in front [of the RV] and have it hooked up to my back so that if I am going to fast, the driver can just pull me back.”

Brown runs between 30 and 33 kilometres a day without exception. She takes breaks in between and if she doesn’t quite make it into a town, she will rest for the night and begin back at the spot she left off.

This isn’t the first fundraising event she has done, Brown ran 61 kilometres last August, raising $11,000 for repairs at a bible camp in Burns Lake.

Following that run, she was stuck in Fort St. John when the Babine Forest Products mill in Burns Lake exploded and decided if she couldn’t get home, she would do what she could to help out.

“I couldn't go home, it wasn't safe to travel and I couldn't help and when I found out. I decided to do a 30 hours walk to raise funds for the victims and their families and I have had so many people come in and talk to me and ask me questions and I couldn't figure out where all these people were coming from when I was doing the walk. What it turned out to be was that the people that came in to talk to me had left the building and have gone to media.”

The projects keep finding her, she says. And there is no way she can turn down an offer to help.

“My heart won't let me say no. Especially for a really great cause, I can't say no. I never, ever expected myself to be doing anything like this.

But, it all boils down to my heart wouldn't let me say no.”

The Northern Lights Recovery Centre will provide 20 beds for men and women with a possible youth wing planned for the future. More than 450 persons dealing with drug an alcohol dependency are treated by Northern Health each year, wile organizations like the Salvation Army deal with an additional 200.

ood afternoon ladies and gentlemen, I am so incredibly proud to be up here representing the Class of 2013 on such a big day that we have all been waiting for.

I still remember my first day in kindergarten not wanting to let go of my dad as I left for school, I had to

hold my momʼs hand as I went into the classroom.

Never did they warn me that 2+2 would eventually lead into logarithms, or E=MC2, nor did I think that I would learn so many other lessons about life.

Luckily though, we had so much support to help us make it through. I'd like to thank the parents, family, friends and teachers who have been there to pick us up when we fall or push us that little bit extra out of our comfort zones. You have all touched so many lives up here on this stage, and without you none of this would possible.

At first I didn't really know what to write about when I thought of our class, I figured I could just write about how great it was that we

came together as one, and give a clichè Dr Suess quote, but it didn't seem honest to me. Not when our class has such a variety of people in it. They say it takes many people to make the world, and the same goes for a class; I've never seen so many talented, young people all in a single grade. From our athletes, such as the volleyball players going to provincials, and hockey players playing for the banner, to our artists and the beautiful expressions they create, our Einsteins of the grade, and our actors and musicians.

That doesn't even sum up half of what our class can do. So I can't say we came together as one, but more so branched out like a

tree into so many different areas of talent and interest.

I believe it is the individuality of our class, of our thoughts and of our values, that can make a sure impact today's world. This is because, like a tree, in order to grow and bloom it must branch in different directions to receive every angle of sunlight possible, thus having the greatest results.

Every student of this class is capable of achieving greatness in whatever they do, and reaching any goals they set for themselves. Grads, I hope you realize this and will push yourselves to fulfill your life desires, as well as do what will make you happy. I know when we first started out we had such big

dreams of what we wanted to be when we grew up.

Whether it was wanting to be doctors, firefighters, or maybe musicians, as we got older, the dreams disappeared with the reality of college, university and finances. This day today though, I want to tell you fellow grads, not to give up, but to follow your wildest dreams, live life to its fullest, and find happiness in everything you do.

The past 4 years have so many memories we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. From the good times and the bad, all of our experiences have helped to shape us. So many friends were made, so many people have come and gone in and out our lives, and I hope everyone can cherish

the precious moments made here at CSS, and in years from now they can look back and still smile or laugh at all that has happened.

Do not think that graduation is the end, for it is merely the beginning to the rest of your lives. So remember to “Live as if you were to die tomorrow.

Learn as if you were to live forever."to "Be the change you wish to see in the world" and most importantly " “You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching, Love like you'll never be hurt, Sing like there's nobody listening, And live like it's heaven on earth.”

And so proudly I present to you the Fabulous Grad Class of 2013, thank you, thank you very much.

Your family, your friends and your community are proud of your achievement. Graduation is the beginning of a new path in life, and we wish you much success as you move forward.

ell, naturally, I am going to say “Congratulations” and wish you the best in the months and years ahead. But there is much more I would like to say and hope that some of it will benefit you as you make decisions for life.

Having just passed a major hurdle, you can be justly proud of completing a grueling four years of study. And if you’re in the

top 10 per cent it took more than a little work. It is the work ethic that you nurture and use to advantage that will set you out ahead of the pack.

Some of you could be contemplating a little break from study. Be careful and don’t be seduced by the siren call of easy money. Money’s nice but if you choose immediate gratification in place of long-term preparation

there could be regrets in five or ten years. And if you do take that time off to work, don’t get sucked into buying a new pickup or dirt bike or quad or some other frivolous object. Make a deal with your parents to pay them rent and board and save your money. It’ll come in very handy when you finally settle on a career.

We gladly welcome you to our 2013 graduation ceremony.

Randy and I were voted by our peers to give this graduation speech on behalf of the class. Not going to lie, I donʼt really know what the logic is behind this was, because anyone that knows Randy and I know that…well we arenʼt exactly the smartest kids in the school, and that we are probably nowhere near capable of writing an inspiring long speech to read in front of hundreds of people, as some of the students in this class would have been. But we are winging it anyways.

Congratulations to our Upstanding Graduates Whether you’re continuing your education or embarking on a new career, we wish you much luck and success.

So anyone who hasnʼt dozed out of consciousness already, please stay awake and if you donʼt..well we donʼt blame you. The first thing we did while brainstorming ideas for this speech was of course You tube it, we looked to find some clues and ideas to include this speech. We noticed that most of the videos were in big schools in the United States, while we are here in the little town of Chetwynd with 55 grads.

Having a small grad class really impacts the kind of year we had. Itʼs hard to split everyone into different groups, for example: Jocks, nerds, athletes, goth, rednecks, and so on, we do have these people but for some reason they all end up hanging out and being friends with each other anyways.

Maybe itʼs the small town, or maybe we are all just really cool nice teenagers…thatʼs why this grad class is such an awesome group to be part of,

This all being said, Kristian and I have some thank youʼs and of course apologies to make to teachers and staff that stuck it out through our short five years of high school. First of all thank you to all the great teachers and staff from all parts of the school. I think it is difficult for our teachers and administration to not have developed a very tight bond with the students in our small school, and that is how it should be. Thanks to the parents

and guardians for putting up with everything us evil teens put you through.

Now we need to apologize, on behalf of the little grade eights we used to be, to our homeroom teachers, Mr. Joyce with the good majority of possessed boys, Mr. Haggarty with the extremely mouthy girls, and Mrs. Henry everyone knows you had a perfect bunch of angels so we arenʼt apologizing to you. We are sure there are a lot of more personal apologies specific people in this group of kids that we canʼt exactly talk about without getting in some trouble.

In conclusion we would like to congratulate all the people on this stage and thanks again to parents and staff for the help. We look forward to looking on facebook and other social websites in the next five or ten years, seeing how everyone is doing, and where in the world they have travelled. Peace out C.S.S

I would also like to thank Mrs. Helen Toppin, Mrs. Sherry Mounsey and Ms. Susan Dixie for their contributions toward getting the grads prepared for graduation and todayʼs celebration. I would like to

recognize Mrs. Wendy Fontaine for continuing her tradition of getting the grads ready and steadied to make their walk to the stage.

Mrs. Janna Warncke for assisting with the slideshow among other things. There are many other staff members who have worked and will continue to work behind the scenes throughout the weekend. Thank you all.

Mr. Rice needs to be recognized for all the work setting up and running the sound for the ceremony, and dance. We also need to thank the grade 11 student and parent volunteers who are assisting us in making today and tonight a safe and memorable experience for all.

Grads I promised you that I would keep my closing remarks brief and I will. We are here to share a very special day with our grad class, or as I have been referring to them recently “the cardiac crew” and the reason my bald spot continues to grow. Right from the start of the school year, this class moved at their own pace and as much as you

Quintette Mine set to reopen in 2014

BY MIKE CARTER Chetwynd Echo Reporter –––––––––––––– TUMBLER RIDGE – Teck Resources Ltd. (Teck) has been granted an amendment to its previous Mines Act permit last Thursday, clearing the way for the reopening of the Quintette coal mine, 20 kilometres southeast of Tumbler Ridge.

The project is still subject to a final sanction decision by Teck. A statement on the company’s website says that production is expected to begin in the first half of 2014.

“I can’t speculate on the final sanction decision,” Chris Stannell, Senior Communications Specialist for Teck said.

“Early works activities, such as procurement of long-lead equipment, engineering and some recruitment have been underway.

Any major works are pending [that] final sanction decision.”

The mine was previously in operation from 1982 to 2000.

The capital cost of reopening the mine is estimated at $869 million. The project will provide 500 new full-time jobs in the area, according to South Peace MLA Mike Bernier.

“Projects like this help support families and promote continued economic growth, bringing lasting benefits to the region,” Bernier said.

The company has been working on reopening the mine for a few years. A feasibility study was started in June 2010. Teck then applied in 2012to have their Mines Act permit

amended to allow for the reopening of the mine.

In March 2011, Teck community liaison Rick Prolux spoke to the District of Chetwynd council about the project, saying that the company was looking to increase its exports to 30 million tons of steel-making coal, with the majority of that coal “hopefully” coming from the Quintette mine.

The Quintette mine was at one time, the largest coalmine in Canada.

Once reopened, the mine will be significantly smaller than the previous operation both in terms of footprint and output. It is expected to yield three million metric tonnes of “clean” steel making (or metallurgical) coal per year using an open pit mining-method.

Six First Nations were involved in consultations during the review of the Quintette project, including the Mcleod Lake Indian Band, the West Moberly First Nations and the Saulteau First Nation.

“With respect to the Quintette project, we have established work plans that address the interests of Indigenous Peoples in the areas of wildlife management, culturally signif-

icant plants, water management and land reclamation. We plan to have ongoing dialogue with Indigenous Peoples throughout the course of the project,” Stannell said.

Teck Resources was involved in the founding of Tumbler Ridge, when in 1981, a group of Japanese steel mills agreed to purchase 100

million tonnes of coal over 15 years for US$7.5 billion from Teck and Denison Mines Inc. Declining global prices forced the mine to close in 2000, with the town losing about half of its population.

Since 2000, rising coal prices have led to new mines popping up in the Peace region. In 2012, more than 30,000 people were employed in mining and mineral related sectors, more than double the number employed in these sectors in 2001.

The BC Liberal government’s BC Jobs plan committed the province to the opening of eight new mines and the expansion of a further nine mine by 2015.

pipeline project wrapped up on Monday the federal government made a last ditch effort to slip in evidence about the safety of the proposed project, despite the panel having already rejecting their argument the Canadian Press reports.

The panel, which began its hearings on the project in May 2011, will produce its final report to the federal government by the end of this year, panel chairwoman Shelia Leggett said.

Enbridge has come up against strong environmental and First Nations that claim the pipeline, and the resulting tanker traffic in the Prince Rupert area threaten a disastrous spill that could devastate the area.

Last week, Jim Shaw, a Department of Justice lawyer quoted a March 18 news release when making his oral argument to the panel, stating new measures would be put in place to protect the coast including a “world class” tanker system that mandated a double reinforced steel wall for each tanker.

Rosanne Kyle, who represents the Gitxaala First Nation near Prince Rupert, told the panel that such arguments should be rejected.

“Give no weight to the press releases,” Kyle told the panel, also noting that Northern Gateway president John Carruthers has already told the panel he “could not attest to the accuracy” of the information in the news releases on the Department of

The panel ruled the evidence inadmissible.

Christopher Jones, representing the province of British Columbia, echoed Kyle’s arguments saying there was no evidence before the panel about the federal tanker safety program.

He urged the panel to base its decision solely on “evidence and not anything else.”

Cheryl Brown, who represents the environmental group Douglas Channel Watch, noted that the federal government has not released any details of its safety plans and nothing has been passed by Parliament.

Brown said that the reference to the federal government’s safety plans was “only rhetoric to gain social licence.”

On Monday, Enbridge continued work with aboriginal groups along the proposed pipeline route to clarify their offers.

One offer obtained by the Canadian Press indicated First Nations along the route would receive as little as $70,000 a year for same

bands, but the company said late Sunday that is not the average offer and that the average range would be about three times that amount.

A 10-per-cent equity stake in the pipeline has been offered to some aboriginal groups.

The Canadian Press also obtained a legal assessment for one of the bands compiled in 2011, which stated the anticipated annual average net income for First Nations would be $70,500.

That assessment expressed concern that the bands would have to borrow the money to buy into the agreement from the company, but an Enbridge spokesman said the offer to borrow the funds was made at the request of aboriginal groups, which might not be able to obtain as low a rate of interest as the pipeline company could.

Enbridge spokesman Paul Stanway said the $70,500 would be on the lower end of the scale and would be for a band located some distance from the pipeline.

Six new wildfires in the Prince George Fire Centre

CHETWYND ECHO STAFF –––––––––––––– PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Fire Centre responded to six new fire starts this week in the Fort Nelson Zone.

One of the fires is suspected to be human-caused, and the rest all appear to be the result of a lightning system that moved through the region over the weekend. The largest fire is in the Tsea Lakes area, approximately 75 kilometres northeast of Fort Nelson, and is estimated at about 240 hectares in size. None of the fires are threatening any structures or infrastructure at this time.

One unit crew, eight initial attack crews, and three helicopters are currently responding to the fires in the Fort Nelson Zone, and will be joined by three additional unit crews over the next 24 hours. Airtankers were utilized yesterday to support ground crews and could be deployed again if necessary.

The fire danger rating throughout the Prince George Fire Centre’s jurisdiction is moderate to high with an area of extreme fire danger to the North East of Fort Nelson.

Since April 1, fire crews have responded to 79 wildfires in the Prince George Fire Centre, with a provincial total of 281 wildfires.

There are currently no burning restrictions in place in the Prince George Fire Centre.

Site C legacy in place for those who live in Peace The Mayor’s Report with Merlin Nichols Now you know, or you should know, because the news has been released.

For months the Peace River Regional District and the area municipalities have been quietly working with BC Hydro to create a Legacy springing from the construction of the Site C Dam. Not that the dam is already interrupting the natural flow of the Peace, or even that it’s construction is assured, but if the project receives the nod, the Legacy is in place for us who live in the Peace.

Question one: What’s in it for us? Commencing with the first month of power production, the Legacy will be realized in real, unfettered Canadian dollars over a 70-year period. Weighted 60% on population and 40% on regional percentage of the perceived project impacts, the formula allocates 5.49 % of the total funding to Chetwynd. With a base annual allocation of 2.4 million indexed to the average CPI after the first payment, you can do the math to answer the question.

Question two: Does the agreement treat all communities and rural areas fairly? Reaching agreement on how to disperse a Legacy fund can never be easy – because there is

never enough. Coming to eye-to-eye consensus on major points of difference probably will never happen. Ultimately, a compromise that achieves even part of what we hoped to achieve is the best we can achieve.

That’s the world we live in. So be it! Yes, I believe it is a fair agreement, as

fair as is possible given that we are all human beings, but I sympathize with many of the concerns expressed by those whose lives will be more affected by the construction of the dam than is our life in Chetwynd. To lose one’s land; to have to move; to experience an unwanted change of

lifestyle; these are traumatic experiences that leave lasting hurts. But these are not the major focus of the Legacy fund.

These community-specific circumstances have to be addressed through mitigation measures derived from negotiation with BC Hydro.

Question three: How will we use the Legacy funds? Wisely, I trust. I won’t be around long enough to see if the community uses them wisely.

But here is my opinion of what wise will still look like in twenty or forty years: wise will not use Legacy funds for routine operational expenses otherwise covered by the tax base; wise will use them for funding needs like sewer and water and road

repairs. Perhaps they will fund those extras that make a community special. But don’t forget that most of those extras come with operational costs that will have to be funded from the tax base.

Wise could even choose to forego spending for a few years to build a fund for something very special. I hardly dare to dream what those very special uses might be, but I have a vision of a community that is kind to the aged, that cares for its young, and provides for the providers.

Chetwynd’s Canada Day Celebrations are ready to go: parade route changed

BY MIKE CARTER Chetwynd Echo Reporter –––––––––––––– C H E T W Y N D Preparations for Canada Day celebrations in Chetwynd have been under way for three months and with the day drawing near, fill-in event coordinator Leo Sabulsky says things are finalized and ready to roll.

The parade route will be altered this year. It will not end at the recreation centre like in past years, but instead will detour to Spirit Park because of the construction that will begin on the “rightin/right-out” project.

“They may be starting work at the rec. centre so

it’s going to be a mess. In the past we did not affect Highway 97 but this year we are. So it’s going to be a fun day. If all goes as planned we will have a very wet and safe day,” Sabulsky said.

“We are going to use Spirit Park as much as possible for our activities.

The RCMP is on board and will lead the parade.

We’ve been working on [the planning] for probably three months and we wanted to involved the fire department.”

The parade will begin at 11 a.m., proceeding from the District of Chetwynd office on the North Access road, turning up 51st Street, across on 50th

In conjunction with the Canada Day celebrations, the Chetwynd Volunteer Fire Department is holding its 50th anniversary celebration. Following the parade, they will be putting on games for children in Spirit Park. Kids and parents can take part in a boot throw and try their hand at hitting a target with the firehouse.

Face painting, zumba demonstrations and an introduction to Pickleball will also go on at Spirit Park.

Ice cream bars, cake and

refreshments will be given out.

A 5 kilometre fun run will begin at 8 a.m. at the Rec. Centre, participants are asked to wear red and white.

A free swim will also be held at the Rec. Centre between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Preparations for the fireworks will start at 10 p.m. with the show expected to go on at around midnight, Sabulsky said.

Participants in the parade should head ot the District Office at 10 a.m.

Fatal Williams Lake crash has Chetwynd connection featured Job Opportunities

cle fatal accident in the early morning hours of June 24th on Chimney Lake Road in Williams Lake.

Upon responding to the initial report of the acciCHETWYND ECHO STAFF dent, Williams Lake RCMP –––––––––––––– determined that the Dodge WILLIAMS LAKE More Ram pickup truck was details have come to light stolen from Grand Prairie, following the single vehi- Alberta. The suspects had

replaced the truck’s license plate with a stolen one from Chetwynd, BC. It is believed that alcohol and excessive speed were factors in this accident.

A 22-year-old male from Williams Lake was found deceased at the scene of the accident and a 21-yearold passenger sustained serious injuries and is cur-

rently in critical condition.

A third passenger was arrested at the scene without incident.

The 21 year-old driver and one of the passengers fled on foot and stole another vehicle, a Toyota Tundra, from a nearby residence. After a brief pursuit and with assistance from Police Dog Services,

both males were apprehended and taken into custody. After learning of their real identities, it was further determined that both males are from Alberta and the driver had outstanding warrants from that province.

Seven arrested in Dawson drug bust featured Job Opportunities

SUBMITTED –––––––––––––– DAWSON CREEK - An undercover operation by the Dawson Creek RCMP has led to several arrests in connection with cocaine dealing in the city. The

busts took place over two weekends back in February and March, which resulted in seven arrests and 19 criminal charges.

The local undercover operation was named

Project EPARLOUS, and was aimed at street level cocaine traffickers, based on consultation with the community. The focus was on the bar scene in Dawson Creek, as well as “dial-a-dope” dealers who R E A D MO R E .

They each face two counts of trafficking cocaine, while Damian Rice has also been charged one count of robbery, Robert Burr an additional two counts of failing to comply

with bail conditions, and Charles Calahasen also faces two counts of failing to comply with probation.

The others have been released with strict bail conditions.

Mine Supervisor

Huckleberry Mines is seeking a Mine Supervisor. Reporting to the Mine General Foreman, this position is responsible for the direction supervision of an operation team to meet daily production targets and accomplish assigned tasks in a safe and efficient manner. Applicants require a current B.C. Shiftboss Certificate with a current first aid ticket and a minimum of five years experience as a Mine Supervisor. A B.C. Mine Rescue ticket and Surface Blasting ticket would be considered an asset. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills as direction must be clearly understood by team members. This position also requires excellent time management and organizational skills, competent computer skills and familiarization with Microsoft Word and Excel.

After a decade of careful planning, our application is now before the regulatory authorities.

But that doesn’t mean we are finished in making the case for Northern Gateway to British Columbians and all Canadians.

Critical questions, affirmative answers.

It all boils down to two questions the JRP must address in their report to the Governor-in-Council. One is whether Gateway is in the Canadian public interest, and the second is the Project’s likelihood of causing significant adverse environmental impacts. The answers are clear. Gateway is urgently needed, meets all requirements for approval under the National Energy Board Act and is definitely in Canada’s interest. Given the commitments and safety measures we have proposed, the Project is not likely to cause significant adverse effects on the environment.

Northern Gateway’s written and oral JPR evidence was prepared and presented by many of Canada’s and the world’s foremost experts on the related subjects. Each had thorough knowledge of the Project and the relevant scientific and engineering studies completed in support of the Project. Their evidence in favour of Gateway was comprehensive, conclusive and compelling.

Unprecedented in scope, detail and potential.

Our application was defended by answering thousands of Information Requests and presenting a series of nine witness panels.

Together with our partners, we will have spent approximately $500 million on this Project, before receiving approval, including environmental assessments, traditional land use studies, detailed engineering and consultation with communities and First Nations—all over the course of a decade.

Our application details the enormous value of connecting Canadian resources to markets that need those resources for their own economic and social development.

We are completely confident that Gateway can be designed, constructed and operated in a safe and responsible manner—first and foremost. Flowing from this, there are the enormous benefits in terms of jobs and dollars to support schools, hospitals and social programs that define this country and this province.
