WHAT’S ON Autumn Winter 2018 www.stollerhall.com The Stoller Hall, Hunts Bank, Manchester M3 1DA

This brochure launches The Stoller Hall’s second full season, establishing it firmly as a home to some of the finest musical artists from Manchester and around the world. We’re delighted to continue our flourishing collaborations with the city’s most exciting ensembles. Manchester Camerata open the season with the first of two concerts continuing the rich artistic intimacy between Gábor Takács-Nagy, JeanEfflam Bavouzet and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Resident ensemble Manchester Collective give two performances cementing their reputation for provocative and theatrical interpretations of chamber music. Northern Chamber Orchestra, recently named as Orchestra in Association, also visit twice with soloists Freddy Kempf and Julian Bliss. This season we also introduce This Woman’s Work, a (centuries overdue) series of events championing and celebrating female composers. The Stoller Hall may be relatively new, but it’s only the latest chapter in Chetham’s long history. Approaching its 50th year as a specialist music school, Chetham’s students and alumni form, as ever, a core part of the season. Pianists Boris Berman and Leon McCawley begin a cycle of world class piano concerts, whilst the venue’s quality unlocks new opportunities for the School’s exceptional young players to perform alongside Manchester Chamber Choir, English Touring Opera and as part of the Woman to Woman tour. Don’t miss out. Richard Hartwell, General Manager

Critics were effusive about Manchester Camerata’s last recording with one of the greatest pianists of the decade. ‘Highlights are too many to list...’ said Gramophone Magazine, and BBC Music Magazine stated that this was ‘Mozart music-making of altogether superior quality’. This is due to the incredible synergy between old friends Gábor Takács-Nagy and Jean-Efflam Bavouzet – not forgetting ‘the wellbalanced Manchester Camerata…crisp and poised’.

After the interval is Suk’s Meditation, a politically charged work designed to ignite Czech Nationalist sentiments at the outbreak of WWI. This leads into a final work also written at a time of war and revolutionary fervour; Haydn’s Symphony No. 102, premiered during the French Revolutionary Wars. Its debut was suitably dramatic. fifty In September 1969, a small musical revolution took place in Manchester. A new intake of students was admitted to Chetham’s by musical audition, laying the foundations of the country’s first specialist music school. Many of them, for the first time in 300 years, were girls. Fifty years later, former Chetham’s students fill concert halls across the world - as performers, as influencers, and as audiences. Over half a century, that small revolution has rippled across the musical landscape, creating a step change in education, accessibility and ideals.
