Standing in front of the IGNITE Sports & Enrichment Center are, from left, Executive Director Natalie Richley, Jim Filla and Ashley and Dominick Ambrose, the founder and CEO of the new indoor recreation center in Chardon.

New Indoor Rec Center to Open By Jamie Ward The idea may have come to Dominick Ambrose during a car ride, driving miles west so that his daughters, Alicia and Ashley, could participate in sports. Those indoor facilities were located west of Cleveland when the snow was piled high around Ambrose’s home in Munson Township, making outdoor athletics a summer dream. “I thought about the need of

having something in Chardon,“ Ambrose said. “We are nationally known for being in the snowbelt, and we have beautiful facilities — but we have nothing for the seven and eight months of horrible weather.“ Ambrose happened to own a large warehouse, formerly called the Eagle America Building, at 510 Center St. in Chardon. It was a woodworker’s outlet, storing tools and bits. Now Ambrose is converting

the facility into an indoor recreation center, called the IGNITE Sports and Enrichment Center. The center will include two multi-purpose courts, where basketball, volleyball and other sports can be played. And then there’s the batting cages, which should be popular for Northeast Ohio baseball and softball teams, where the weather does not usually cooperate in the springtime.

Several hours of service work a day is more than a way for Russell teen Matthew Amato to spend time with his friends. It’s a way to build character, learn skills and appreciate what he has. Matthew, along with his brothers, Noah and Gus, and their mother, Angie, formed the Wacky Wednesday service club earlier this year in order to gain appreciation of serving others. “We’re looking at helping tons of people out,” the incoming West Geauga sophomore said while helping out at Fellowship Bible Church in

Bainbridge Township last Wednesday. “I just love giving back to the county and am grateful for what I have.” Every Wednesday during this summer, they visit places around the county and volunteer their morning time to help with whatever is needed, Angie said. After their work is done, the boys all hang out and do something fun, such as visit the pool or play “octo-ball,” a variation of dodgeball in an octagon-like enclosure, at the Chagrin Valley Athletic Club in Bainbridge Township, Angie said.

A proposed site plan of the IGNITE Sports & Enrichment Center at 510 Center St. in Chardon. The bottom portion, which includes two multi-purpose courts, activity rooms and batting cages, is set to open soon. Everything above that is a projected expansion.

Rec Center from page 1 “I can’t tell you how many people have asked when the batting cages are going to be up,“ Ambrose said. “People got the flyer and are already calling and asking to use them.“ Ambrose has worked closely with the city of Chardon for a few years, and the park and recreation board has agreed to move the basketball programs to the IGNITE facility, said City Manager Randy Sharpe. The financial cost to the city is the same as what they’ve been paying, Sharpe said. “We’re looking forward to it and having additional space,“ he added. Work is still being done at the center. There will be no membership fees and programs will be pay as you go. But it’s not just about athletics, says IGNITE’s Executive Director Natalie Richley. IGNITE stands for Instilling Growth and Nurturing Individual Talents and Exceptionalities. Richley, who was born and raised in Chardon and has a degree in special education, has created adaptive programs that will focus on music, art and cooking therapy for children and adults with special needs. Her uncle, Jim Filla, has Down syndrome. “He has always needed a place to go,“

Richley said. “But for enrichment activities, something outside of work.“ She stresses that social interaction is important for people with special needs. “They can regress,“ she said. “We don’t want that. They thrive on other people to give them attention and to communicate. For them to be able to come out and utilize this facility enriches their lives and engages them.“ Added Ambrose, “Whatever you and I can do, they can do it, as well. But they need different kinds of equipment to do it.“ “So nobody will be turned away,“ Richley said. For Filla, only a basketball and hoop is needed. Playing basketball is one of his favorite things to do. Richley hopes to start an IGNITE Special Olympics one day. IGNITE is currently registering sixweek music classes for children while work continues. The cost of a 6-week program is $70, with supplemental funding available to offset fees. There is space behind the complex for expansion. As Ambrose opens the back door of IGNITE and looks at the open grass fields, he envisions a soccer field and running track. For more information you can visit IGNITE’s Facebook page by searching for IGNITE Sports & Enrichment Center. She said the various friends — including John and Matthew Huffaker — have other activities during different days of the week, such as football weightlifting at the high school, lacrosse training and marching band practice. But Wednesdays are theirs. “This adventure builds character and technical skills. They learn how to work as a team,” Angie said. The Amatos, along with Wacky Wednesday member Franklin SpelicDavis, are members of Fellowship Bible Church. The group’s activities dovetail with the church’s service-oriented mission, said Terry Klebes, the pastor of administration and global outreach. “The group provides us great service,” Klebes said as he watched the boys ready the church’s playground equipment for the summer season. “They’re serving the community and living the mission,” he said. “At

Executive Chef Sal LaPuma, pictured with his mother, Floreen LaPuma, who oversees operations, in front of their new restaurant, Salvatore’s, at 16250 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township.

A Study of Pasta, Persistence and a Plan at Salvatore’s By Josh Echt A concept born in culinary school decades ago and spurred by a passion of fine cuisine finally came to fruition in Chester Township. Salvatore’s, which held a soft opening May 2, serves classic Italian cuisine. The grand opening will take place in the fall. However, Salvatore’s has not set a date. The conceptual idea of the restaurant was based on a culinary school final project created years ago by Executive Chef Salvatore LaPuma. LaPuma discussed the history of the restaurant and explained why food is his passion.

A Providential Project Idea LaPuma started working in his father’s bakery, LaPuma’s Bakery, in Mayfield Heights at age 10. He graduated from West Geauga High School in 1985 and then headed to the East Coast. He received a double-

major at Johnson and Wales Culinary School in Providence, R.I., in both baking science/technology and in culinary arts. Upon his return to Cleveland, he began working again in his father’s bakery, helping out with mixing, running the ovens and decorating cakes. But, in the back of his mind, LaPuma wanted to own his own restaurant someday. While in culinary school, he had to design a model of a restaurant, complete with a menu and business plan as a final project. “Ninety percent of that plan was in my head and it was something I eventually wanted to accomplish,” he said. In 2001, his father sold the Mayfield Heights bakery and LaPuma — an avid hunter, fisherman and guide — worked in the outdoors business. At the end of the decade, his family purchased the former Grendell’s Bakery in 2009.

Radtke said he was not aware of the status of Temple’s complaint. Open House

On June 26, the Chester Township Trustees held a regular meeting, approving various financial items and purchase orders, including aggregate, fuel and the purchase of firefighter protective gear. A motion was approved for two trustees, the fiscal officer and assistant fiscal officer to attend the July 9 Geauga Township Association Dinner. An addition to the policy manual was approved addressing “Attendance at Conferences, Institutes, Schools, Conventions, Meetings.“ The focus of this meeting was to review and discuss each department’s 2015 budget. Total planned expenditures are: General fund ($883,244); fire department and EMS (combined-$1,216,800); police department ($1,734,661); road department including gas, motor vehicle and road (combined $1,390,329). Total appropriations for the township in 2015, including some smaller funds, is currently at $5,540,723. The general fund advanced $125,000 to the road department because according to law, budgets cannot have a negative balance. Even with this advance, the road department lacks sufficient funding for any asphalt resurfacing in 2015. A financial analysis is in development, and a presentation at the July 24 trustees meeting is likely. A resident raised his concerns regarding flooding onto his property from work being done by the township on Herrick Drive. The township is working with the resident to address the issue. A motion was approved setting a public hearing for 7 p.m. July 10 at Chester Town Hall for the proposed fiscal year 2015 budget.

A copy of the draft budget is available at town hall. Chester’s final 2015 budget is due at the county by July 20 and a public meeting with the county budget commission has been set for 9 a.m. on Aug. 13 at the auditor’s office for review. A motion was approved setting a public hearing for Aug. 7 for zoning amendment Z-2014-1. After the fact, the board learned that a public hearing must be held within 30 days of receipt of the documentation from the zoning commission. To correct this, on June 30, a special public meeting was held, establishing the public hearing for Z-2014-1 at 7:02 pm on July 24. An executive session to discuss legal matters with our assistant county prosecutor, Bridey Matheney, was also part of this special meeting. In January, the Chester Township Trustees established a regular public meeting schedule and that schedule was published early in the year. Because of the FY2015 budget review, the June 26 board meeting began at 3 p.m., lasting more than five hours. The meeting concluded at 8:07 p.m. followed by elected officials signing checks and other official documents. Township officials were therefore unable to attend the park board meeting. Township officials have received statements of concern and inquiries that Parkside Park may shut down or not be funded in FY2015. Those statements are incorrect. The Chester Township Trustees have every intent to provide ample funding to support our township park and funding has already been established as part of the 2015 budget discussions. If you have any questions regarding this or any other matter, you can contact any Trustee, 440-729-7058. Submitted by Chester Township officials
