Lighting Ceremony Brightens Holiday Season in Chester By Josh Echt

Frosty may be a cold snowman, but even his heart would have been warmed by a community tree lighting ceremony Saturday. More than 10 0 Chester Township residents attended the second annual Winter Festival and Tree Lighting at Parkside Park’s gazebo, sponsored by the Chesterland Rotary Club. The 30-minute presentation featured speeches from officials of the Rotary, which was instrumental in the event’s planning, said Chester Township Park Board President Lance Yandell. Yandell, who oversees the three-member board, said the township’s park board is responsible for the community’s three parks, including Parkside and the famous gazebo. Participants and Christmas light enthusiasts were treated to approximately 25 displays lit up throughout the park.

Chesterland Rotary President Jay Jones spoke about the magic of Christmas and the planning that went into the Winter Festival. “A lot of effort was put into this,” Jones said. “I’d like to also thank the Boy and Girl Scout troops that showed up.” Various Boy Scouts helped light the walkway leading from the parking lot to the gazebo, while Girl Scouts, Brownies, Daisies and Cadettes from multiple troops sang Christmas carols after Jones spoke. The park board provided $5,500 in funding — $3,500 for decorations and $2,0 0 0 for lighting — to the Rotary. Yandell also said Peerless Electric helped wire and helped provide electric service to the displays. “They have done an amazing job,” Yandell said of the

Wolverines Reset and Rebuild With New Class By Jamie Ward The Wolverines boys basketball team has undergone many offseason changes. “It’s going to be different,” says John Cardiero, sitting in his athletic director’s office. After 16 wins a year ago, the Wolverines return just one starter. But football injuries have eliminated seniors Nick Rakich and Tory Palmer for the season. Others were banged up to start the season, like Cooper Stafford. He and Anthony Insana are the only two with any varsity experience. West Geauga stays positive,

though, under Cardiero, now in his fifth season as head coach. “They’re trying to find their comfort zone, and you can see it day by day,” Cardiero said. “We know it’s going to be rough at first, especially in the CVC.” Stafford is one of the seniors who will have to calm rough waters. “We are looked at to be leaders,” he said. “Last year that’s what the seniors did for us.” Cardiero said Stafford has “freakish athletic ability.” “We’ve preached to him to be confident,” he continued. “We have to keep him healthy.”

Owen Hester, who will play both guard spots, is one of many Wolverines forced to play junior varsity last season Cardiero because of the strong senior class. He is a shooter and suspects the team will have five shooters on the floor at all times. “He has a deadly shot,” Cardiero said. “There’s no doubt about that. We are getting him to play defense, too.” Cardiero wants West Geauga to run the floor and

Kirtland Nativity Exhibit Garners National Honor By Glen Miller

GLEN MILLER/KC

From left, Jennie Best and Jeri Norton carefully prepare a row of nativity scenes.

The Christmas nativity exhibit at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Historic Kirtland Visitors' Center has received national recognition as the best nativity scene exhibit in the United States. The Friends of Creche, a national organization that honors organizations displaying nativity scenes and is dedicated toward furthering their exhibit, presented the award in October. “It's an honor. We've been doing this for 11 years and each year it just gets better,” said

Elder Robert Sorenson, center director. “We've sponsored this for a long time and we get people who come from all over the world to see it, but mainly locally and Ohio.” This year, 620 different nativity scenes went on display following a Nov. 29 lighting ceremony of 50 trees surrounding the historical center at 780 0 Kirtland-Chardon Road. They remain on free display through Jan. 5 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Musical programs are also

being presented Fridays and Saturdays from 7-7:30 p.m. Each year the visitors' center is staffed by dozens of Latter-day Saints missionaries from throughout the country who maintain the center. They also provide tours for 50,000 to 60,000 visitors each year, as well as 5,000 to 6,000 people who view the nativity scenes. Sorenson, a retired university professor from Logan, Utah, is among them. Hundreds of nativity scenes made in Latin America, Europe,

Nativity from page 1 Africa, Asia and elsewhere around the world are on display in a reconstructed 1800s school house adjacent to the center’s two-story main building, where those made in the U.S. are being shown. Included in the school house exhibit are two nativity scenes made by a married couple serving as missionaries at the visitors' center. One scene includes a large flat rock pulled from a stream near to the visitors' center while another is made from wood found in the area, Sorenson said. “We have some very creative and talented people here. This couple wanted to contribute by making something for us,” he said. Among the international collection is a nativity scene secretly carved by a Chinese man in communist China, where Jennie Best, a Latter-day Saints Church member and longtime nativity project volunteer from Perry, said Christianity is forbidden to be practiced. A Florida couple that is lending it to the nativity exhibit somehow obtained it, she said. One foreign-made exception is a large nativity scene made in Bethlehem, Israel, the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Made by Merton Bartelmay, an Israeli, the exquisitely and meticulously carved olive wood nativity scene sits in the lobby of the center’s main building along with a tall Christmas tree. “This wood is special because you can't carve olive wood unless it has dried for 14 years,” Sorenson said. Among the donated nativity scenes in the main building is a “Nativity in a Tomb.” Even though its name doesn't lend itself to the birth of Christ, the nativity scene by German Norbert Kohen was among those made by wood carving craftsmen in Oberammergau, Germany, at the close of World War II. Built with hinges, it resembles a bomb or bullet when closed. When opened, a carefully carved nativity scene was found inside. American soliders were given these unique nativity creations as thanks for sparing the town from destruction by U.S. bombers, Sorenson said. Oberammergau could have been blown off the face of the earth. It was adjacent to the site of an underground research complex where Messerschmitt jet engines were developed for German fighter aircraft. Also in the building is a nativity scene consisting of midsize modern metal statues, most of which roughly resemble Star Wars villain Darth Vader. “That's why we called it our Darth Vader nativity scene,” Sorenson joked. Started with only a few dozen nativity scenes, the exhibit has grown over the years to become one of the largest in the country, Sorenson said. About half the nativity scenes have been donated permanently to the annual nativity project, including 200 by one woman.

This year, 320 temporarily have been lent to the center, some by local people and others from as far away as Rochester, N.Y., Best said. “We've become well known for what we do. It's one way of honoring and worshiping our Savior Jesus Christ,” Sorenson said. Each year, Latter-day Saints missionaries wait until the day after Halloween to begin setting up the exhibit, a meticulous project that usually takes about two months.

The permanently donated nativity scenes are carefully unpacked from storage boxes as are those personally dropped off at the center to be used in the exhibit. The dismantling of scenes begins Jan. 6 and usually takes two or three weeks, Best said. “When you look over everything here — these nativity sets, after things are set up — you see beauty and love,” Sorenson said. He added, “There was a lot of love in making these and they show the love of Christmas, and the love He has for us.”

The president said he estimated the tree lighting has taken place for at least 20 years, adding planning for the festival took several months. Yandell credited local realtor and Rotarian Reena Kanner for her efforts. “The tree lighting’s gone on at least as long as the 17 years I have been in the Rotary Club,” Kanner said. Although the lighting has become a township tradition for years, last week’s event was only the second year of the festival, which included food vendors selling hot chocolate and popcorn. Yandell said Kanner bought all of the displays needed for the event, which included winter- and Christmas-themed decorations like snowmen and Santa Claus displays. About 12 to 15 volunteers worked over a multi-weekend period to install the displays. Yandell also said “the worker bees have been at it not just weekends, but a few days during the week and on Saturday mornings.” Additionally, West Geauga Schools technology education teacher Jeff Novy and his wood shop class made various chimneys on top of the pavilions that dot the park. Complementing the chimneys was a cutout of St. Nick, ready to take the plunge down the chimney and deposit his gifts, Yandell added. “I just enjoy this event every year and I love giving back to the community,” said Rotary member and emcee Bob Somrak Jr. Patricia DeChellis, a Girl Scout troop leader at St. Anselm School nearby, was in charge of overseeing the Girl Scout choir. She said she was proud of the girls that participated. Pam and Matt Pudelski, of Russell Township, came with their children — Kyle, 6, and Kaitlin, 8. Kaitlin sang in the choir. Kyle was especially appreciative of the festivities going on around him. “I loved the singing,” Kyle said. For more information on the Rotary, visit at www.chesterlandrotary.org.

I am compelled to write about the outpouring support from Jeff Wiseman of Danny Boys Restaurant in Chester Township. He is our sponsor for our 13U Travel Baseball team, "The Danny Boys Bandits." Danny Boys hosted our allyou-can-eat pizza, spaghetti, bread, salad and beverages dinner on Nov. 16. In addition to all his regular business, Jeff and his crew supplied over 112 people a wonderful meal. Jeff's support of West Geauga sports goes above and beyond what we expected. Our 12 local families raved about the fresh food and service provided in the four hours we spent in the restaurant. I hope you can find the space to give Danny Boy's a Big "Thank You." If organizations or teams need a place to meet and eat, this is the place to go. Because we live in a township, there is no city recreation director to help organize fields or practice facilities. Support from Danny Boys is helping us put that in place. Dave Luciano Chester Township

news Search for Children With Disabilities In accordance with the Individual’s with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) of 20 04, The West Geauga Local School District is participating in Child Find efforts to locate, evaluate and identify all children with disabilities, from birth through 21 years of age, who may be entitled to receive special education and related aides and services, regardless of their situations. A disability, in this instance, means such conditions as autism, deaf/blindness, multiple disabilities, deafness/hearing impairment, orthopedic impairment, visual impairment/blindness, specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, cognitive disabilities, speech and language impairments, other health impairments or traumatic brain injury. Although many school aged children with disabilities are identified and currently being served by the West Geauga Local School District, preschool children ages 3-5 with disabilities may not yet be identified because parents may not be aware that programs and services are available through the public school.
