Lawrence Appointed to Park Board First Female Judge in County Shares Story By Rose Nemunaitis

SUBMITTED

Geauga County Probate Court Judge Tim Grendell, right, adminsters the oath of office to former Chester Township Trustee Clay Lawrence, who was appointed last month to the township’s Park Board.

By John Karlovec Former Chester Township Trustee Clay Lawrence was sworn in last month as Chester Township Park Board commissioner. Geauga County Probate Judge Tim Grendell administered the oath of office to Lawrence on Dec. 27. He joins Lance Yandell and Joe Weiss on the board.

Lawrence has resided in Chester for almost 43 years and will bring to the job over three decades of public service to the residents of Chester Township, including various community service and school organizations, Grendell said. Lawrence served two terms as a township trustee, from 1988-1992 and, more recently,

2008-2012. In addition to serving the residents, Lawrence and his wife, Conni, are local business people. They have owned Summer Wind Stables, Tack and Gift Shoppe on Chillicothe Road for 23 years. Lawrence will serve a threeyear term commencing on Jan. 1, 2014.

The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as October lunch-goers talked legalese inside the Beans Coffee Shop on the Square. Conversations paused as the front door swung open and a familiar public official sauntered inside followed by a stream of hellos and nods. “I absolutely love my job,” Chardon Municipal Court Judge Terri Stupica said. “At the municipal court level, and only the municipal court level, do you see many people on a daily basis; you really have the ability to help people, to make a difference.” She added, “That’s what drives me. You give people a rope; they either build a bridge or hang themselves. I like to help people build bridges.” Stupica is the first female trial court judge in the 207 year history of Geauga County presiding over Chardon Municipal Court since January 2012. She talked about what it takes to win a judge’s seat. “Don’t let anyone tell you that it’s impossible,” Stupica said. “Everything is possible. I know that sounds trite, but it’s true. Also, be goal oriented, have a

plan and always be prepared. It takes hard work and dedication; you cannot take the easy road. “I remember someone Stupica involved heavily in politics told my husband during my campaign that ‘Terri is campaigning hard, doing a great job, but she won’t win, not in this county.’ My husband replied, ‘you obviously don’t know my wife very well.’” Stupica has the support of Chardon Mayor Phil King, who has been observing her since she took the bench. “In my opinion, as a lawyer and mayor of Chardon, Judge Stupica has done a great job while sitting on the municipal court bench,” he said. “Judge Stupica has demonstrated her concern with compassion to those needing help while at the same time taking a hard stand against individuals who do not respect the law.” Diners set down forkfuls of Romaine lettuce and spoons of homemade soup to share greet-

For 2014, Center Yourself at Awaken Yoga in Mentor By Josh Echt Awaken Yoga Studio & Healing Arts Center in Mentor is based in a perfect location from a yoga standpoint — a quiet section of aptly named Center Street, sandwiched between two busy freeways. And, with a new year starting, what better way than to center oneself after holiday stress than with yoga? The studio, at 7312 Center Street, offers various classes and opportunities for Mentor, Kirtland and other east side residents to find inner peace. Two yogis — or, rather, practitioners of yoga — Jennifer Langsdale and Lisa Fleming, created the business 18 months ago.

How It Began Langsdale, yoga teacher trainer, first began Awaken Yoga School in an unlikely location for a yoga facility — local parks. At first, she held teacher trainings at various parks in the greater Cleveland area. Eventually, she opened a space next door to another yoga studio, OneTree Yoga in Euclid, located in the Shore Cultural Center.

She told her friend, Lisa Fleming, who took Langsdale’s teacher training in 2008, about an opportunity to purchase OneTree Yoga. Fleming purchased the facility and still runs it to this day, Langsdale said. An opportunity presented itself about 18 months ago and the two women opened Awaken Yoga at its current Center Street location. At one time, it was a florist and housed Mentor Public Library, according to the practice’s website. Some of the unique features include the hardwood floor and multicolored studios, including a green studio, a brown studio and a stairwell leading to upstairs rooms that is purple. Also, the store features a retail section containing books, music, candles and gifts related to the tradition of yoga and the chakras. The heart of Awaken Yoga beats through its classes, which range from restorative, chair, deep stretch, slow flow and vinyasa up to core-based classes. “We usually have up to 14

students at most per class,” added instructor Caryl Church.

‘There’s Love Everywhere’ In addition to yoga, healing disciplines such as massage, Thai massage, Reiki and yoga therapy are available. Awaken Yoga also offers free mats for students and even hosts candlelit classes. In the future, instructors, including Danny Arguetty, who studied at the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in western Massachusetts, may host workshops later this month and in February, Church said. Church, who started taking yoga in 2001 to help curb her anxiety and stress, completed teacher training at Awaken Yoga last year. In addition to teaching yoga, she also is a Reiki master and teaches kindergarten through 12th grade art in the Newbury Schools system. “I view the mat as a transformative space that connects us to ourselves, one another and the subtle vibrations of the universe,” she said.

From left, Cathy Picozzi and Caryl Church are all smiles after displaying the gifts in the Awaken Yoga Studio gift shop and giving a tour of the facility, which includes several classrooms and a healing room.

Church was accompanied by Cathy Picozzi, who started yoga a little more than a year ago at the advice of her chiropractor. Although she started off elsewhere, she quickly discovered

Awaken Yoga last June and fell in love with the practice. “I love the healing energy. There’s love everywhere. It’s

Post Office Accident Charges Out of PD Jurisdiction By Josh Echt

CHESTERLAND NEWS

Area residents have recently asked why the elderly female driver who ran into the Chesterland Post Office on Dec. 20 was not charged, especially given the damage done. The Mercury Mountaineer sport-utility vehicle was the second vehicle to hit the post office last year and third in the last two years. Police Chief Mark Purchase said last Friday the police department does not have jurisdiction on private property regarding motor vehicle accidents. “Unless it is a moving violation such as OVI, reckless operation or driving under suspension, we do not have the ability to charge them criminally,” Purchase said. “We only have authority over public roadways.”

amazing,” Picozzi said. Both Church and Picozzi said yoga is more than physical exercise. Although that is a benefit of the discipline, yoga is combined mind-body discipline that strengthens the practitioner as a whole, they added. “It’s good for you, but you also have to understand more than the physical aspect. You have to understand the spiritual aspect, too, the essence of yoga,” Picozzi said. “Both Jennifer and Lisa want to offer things that go beyond the mat.” For more information and to sign up for classes, visit www.awakentoyoga.com or call 440-789-6226.

ings as the judge zigzagged from table to table en route to order her own lunch. Moments later, Stupica greeted more lunch-goers as she took her turn in back of the line. “She visits often,” Colleen Lear said, owner of Beans Coffee Shop. “She knows everyone and their names, and makes a point to hug and, at the very least, to say hello.” Her familiarity with the patrons, and others who might be surprised that she remembers them, is partly due to her talents as well as a real interest in everybody she meets. “I am blessed to have a photographic memory, that’s how I remember names, etc.,” Stupica said. “But, when I meet people, because every person you meet is important and counts, I try to

remember something unique about him or her, so that the next time I see him or her, I can comment about something personal to them, in a kind way.” Stupica took a sip of Chai tea and shared another hello below the decorative quote “Not Just the Same Old Grind” and chose a table to enjoy her usual tomato soup and thoughts on timing. “In 20 03, then-Municipal Court Judge Craig Albert resigned from the bench, creating an opening in which then Gov. (Bob) Taft had to appoint a replacement,” Stupica said. “I put my hat in the ring then, having always wanted to pursue becoming a judge. As it turned out, timing is everything. It would not have been the right time. “My children were only 8 and 9, and as a single parent, I could not have continued to be involved with them had I been appointed. The time was right

when I ran in 2011, as they were finishing up with high school, knowing that if I was fortunate to win, they were young adults and capable of taking care of themselves for an hour or two after school.” Speaking at schools or other forums, and meeting with other community leaders is part of the community work the judge includes on her schedule, if time allows, “because there is no such thing as a typical week.” “When the Opiate Task Force first met, Judge Stupica immediately became involved and helped move the group forward,” King said. The task force was created to address a substantial increase in illegal use of heroin, opiates and prescription drugs in the county and neighboring areas. “Her passion for helping the community as judge from the personal perspective and legal are self evident.” King said. Stupica left Beans, and seconds later greeted someone new outside. “She is very influential, but takes the time to ask you about you,” Lear said. “She is very sincere. She does it because she wants to do it. She has a very nice aura.” Although she was born in Cuyahoga County and lived part of her life in Lake County, Stupica sees Geauga as her home. “I believe Geauga County is the best county (in which) to raise a family, which is why I chose to stay here,” Stupica said. “I am here to stay.”

community events Horse Racing “For Others” During the holiday season, most people think of those in need and feel compelled to contribute in their own way. Oftentimes, after the season passes and the decorations are removed, people go back to their crazy, hectic lives and lose sight of those in need until they are filled with the warmth and generosity of the next holiday season. Care For Others, a Geauga County-based organization, dedicates its entire year to prevent hardworking individuals and families from potentially entering the cycle of poverty by providing them with financial assistance during a particularly difficult time. The Chesterland Chamber of Commerce believes in the mission of Care For Others and is proud to announce that a portion of the proceeds from their sixth annual Night at the Races will benefit this important cause and they are asking for the community’s help. All tickets are $50 each and include two drink tickets (beer, wine, top-shelf liquor and nonalcoholic selections), dinner buffet stations, complementary valet parking and an entry into a $500 cash drawing.

Consider donating an item for the Chinese, silent or live auctions. All donors will be highlighted in the Chesterland Chamber of Commerce Night at the Races program. Sponsorship is available for races ($100 each) or a horse(s) ($20). All horse and race sponsors will be listed in the racing program along with the name of their horse/race. Corporate Sponsorships are available at every level. Visit the chamber’s website, www.chesterlandchamber.com, for more information. Night at the Races 2014 will be held on Feb. 22 at the newly owned and renovated Berkshire Hills Party Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. and racing begins at 7 p.m. Call the chamber of commerce to purchase tickets, donate auction items and/or sponsor, 440-729-7297.

Christmas Tree Recycling Chester Township has received a grant from the Geauga Trumbull Solid Waste District to fund the recycling of Christmas trees. Residents will be able to take their Christmas trees to the township-owned property at 8565 Herrick Drive and leave them for recycling at any time during the day through Jan. 20.
