A Screen-Free Activity to Do on a Rainy Day Schools Out!!!

What You Do:

The kids are whooping with delight and you are looking forward to weeks of not having to get up, make lunches and get the kids out of the door and on their way to school with all their books, their lunch and some vaguely weather-appropriate clothing.

STEP ONE Pour oil into the empty bottle so that it fills it up 75% of the way. Pour water to fill up the rest of the bottle.

Then the truth will suddenly strike you. You now have to keep them busy for the whole of the summer holidays!

Homemade Lava Lamp Looking for some retro decorations? Make your own homemade lava lamp with this fun science project. Your child will learn about water and oil and their different densities with this hands-on project.

What You Need: Food colouring Water Vegetable oil Clean plastic bottle with cap Effervescent tablet Flashlight (optional)

STEP TWO Put 10 food colouring drops in the mix.

STEP THREE Separate the tablet into 8 parts, and put just one piece into the bottle. The liquids should bubble!

STEP FOUR When the bubbles have settled down, put in a tablet piece again. Keep doing this until there are no more tablet pieces left and there are no more bubbles.

STEP FIVE Put the cap onto the bottle, and gently move the bottle back and forth. "Lava" forms!

How does it work? The little liquid bits come together to form one bigger droplet! The oil and water separate because oil has a bigger density than water. For added excitement, shine a light below the bottle to see some awesome colours!

The medieval market town of Keswick makes for a blissful staycation spent exploring the Lake District.

Just ten minutes on foot from the town centre, Derwentwater is a lake dotted with islets and possessing a real sense of drama thanks to its silvery surface sheen and bordering misty mountains (aka fells). Spend a half-day hiking the eight-mile perimeter path, hop on a Derwent Launch for a cruise across the water, or climb up the slopes of t he nearby Skiddaw.

GOAL! Yes, it’s footie time again, the Euros (2020), and don’t worry, you haven’t entered a time warp, it’s the delayed competition from last year.

Although they played well, winning 15 games they lost 3 out of 4 tests-the ones that matter, injuries being a major cause.

Whereas today, both football and rugby teams are supported by a decent entourage to look after and manage every facet of their lives, not just injuries and recuperation, but whole lifestyle, physical through diet, exercise and training, and mental health through group and individual sessions with coaches, hypnotherapists, stress counsellors, psychotherapists, and more.

Preparation: the initial planning, through understanding what the ideal outcome looks like, the current situation, the gap in knowledge or skills, what is required to fill the gap, and available resources.

Next Level BBQ Chicken

Ingredients

2 red chillies , tops removed and reserved for the smoke mix 8 spring onions , roughly chopped thumb-sized piece of ginger , peeled and roughly chopped 8 garlic cloves , roughly chopped 2 tbsp chopped thyme 1 bay leaf 1 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp paprika 3 tbsp dark brown soft sugar 4 tbsp soy sauce 4 limes , 2 juiced, plus 2 halved to serve 1.5kg mix of chicken drumsticks and wings, lightly scored 200ml ketchup handful of thyme sprigs handful of bay leaves 1 tsp ground allspice reserved chilli tops

Discover how to cook BBQ chicken like a pro. The meat falls off the bone, and the marinade has a lovely balance of sweet, salty and spicy flavours

Method

1. To prepare the meat, tip all the ingredients, except for the chicken and ketchup, into a blender or mini processor. Add a pinch of salt and blitz to a rough paste. Tip two-thirds of the paste into a large bowl with the chicken, and massage the marinade into the meat. Cover and leave for at least 1 hr at room temperature, or up to 48 hrs in the fridge.

2. Meanwhile, make the barbecue sauce. Tip the remaining paste into a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Cook for 5 mins until it thickens and becomes darker, then add the ketchup and cook for 5 mins until sticky. Tip into a container and set aside.

3. Light the barbecue, ensuring the coals are piled up at one end and leaving only a couple of coals on the other side. Lay the chicken on the emptier side. If you’re making the smoke mix, carefully scatter all of the ingredients directly onto the piled-up coals. Cover the barbecue (with the vents open) and cook the chicken for 20 mins. Remove the lid and turn the chicken, then cover again and cook for a further 20 mins.

4. Remove the lid and move the chicken across the grill so it’s above the piled-up coals, then baste with some of the barbecue sauce, keeping enough aside, in a separate container, to serve later.

Cook for 10 mins, adding a few more coals if you need to and turning often, until nicely charred and cooked through – a digital thermometer inserted through the thickest part of the meat should read at least 65C. 5. Put the lime halves on the grill, over the coals, cut-side down for 3-4 mins until charred. Serve the chicken with the lime for squeezing over and reserved barbecue sauce for dipping.

Guilden Sutton Parish Council Newsletter Round-up of local news, July 2021 New Parish Clerk, Chair and Vice-Chair.

Mike Roberts is now parish clerk. Trish Paterson was elected Chair at the Annual Meeting. Vice-chair is Mel Littlewood. Six members of the public spoke on screen about improving the environment, awareness of Climate Change, Sustainability, and noise nuisance in Wicker Lane. Appreciation was expressed for the leading role taken by former clerk Lisa Tiplady in organising voluntary help during Covid. The June meeting did take place at the Village Hall, albeit under restricted circumstances. Items discussed since March:Bus shelter Insurers have at last agreed to pay for a replacement for the bus-shelter near Wildings Yard, and it will be installed very soon but there is a £400 excess for the Parish to pay.

Dog Muck Complaints resulted in the purchase of new signs for problem areas. There are plenty of bins around so no excuse for those dog owners who don’t clear up.

Events The village fete has been cancelled. A picnic may be held if possible but is likely to be at short notice. See usual places for info. An Apple Festival will be held on Sunday 3rd October. Save the Date - Evening Thursday 2nd June 2022 Beacon Lighting to celebrate Her Majesty’s Sapphire Jubilee Greenspace About 70 volunteers planted thousands of trees at Hook’s Wood and thanks were given to Sarah Jessop and the Greenspace group for their amazing effort. The Parish Council would like to secure the purchase of the adjacent field for community use with suitable provision for privacy for neighbouring homes.

Hedges Several residents have reported overhanging hedges creating hazards for people walking past. Please keep hedges trimmed and safe for passers-by.

Neighbourhood Plan is nearing completion.

Residents will be asked to approve it so watch out for more details of how and when.

Play Area The safety surface has been made safe and repairs have been carried out to some play equipment. Closure of the play area during term-time will continue while infections are rising and will be reviewed on a daily basis after 21st June.

Resilience Planning The Parish Council is preparing a Resilience Plan for use in an emergency. The public will be involved later in the year. Please let us know if you can offer suitable experience or equipment in an emergency such as floods or fallen trees.

Village Green Group A group representing residents, parish councillors and the Community Association would like to improve the area around the Village Hall carpark. The dilapidated fence at the rear of Hilltop was the group’s first project. Thanks to CW&C Cllrs Parker & Heatley who each promised £250 from their Community budgets for a new fence. The Community Association has agreed to pay the balance. Residents will be consulted on any significant proposals. Volunteers were due to tackle the overgrown footpath between the school and Oaklands on Saturday 19th June.

Well done Ivan (and all informal litter pickers): The parish lengths-man’s hard work has prompted compliments about his work throughout the parish. His 3 hours work a week are well-spent.

Ivan often reports fly-tipping and it is usually removed by CW&C.

Five myths of socially responsible investing Climate change was a major discussion point at the recent G7 summit in Cornwall and I thought I’d look at how the investment industry is moving forward in the area of socially responsible investing, by debunking some of the old myths and prejudices that still exist.

Myth 1: You sacrifice performance A common objection to socially responsible investing is that you must sacrifice performance.

This isn’t necessarily the case. Companies managing environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks well should avoid major pitfalls or controversies. In addition, those that are improving could boost their value in the eyes of shareholders as they come to be perceived as higher quality. Any investor assessing a business should find that considering these risks is helpful and potentially beneficial to long term returns.

At certain times stringent ethical or sustainability considerations may have a detrimental impact on performance, though. Any process that drastically reduces the number of available investments, for instance by screening out whole sectors and industries, does reduce the opportunity set, and this might lead to periods of underperformance, although it can equally work the other way.

Myth 2: It’s a niche area Socially responsible investing is not a fad, nor is it a niche area. All investors can benefit from the principles behind ESG, which represent a myriad of factors affecting the potential of, and the risks surrounding, any investment. Indeed, there is increasingly an expectation that such issues must be taken account of in any analysis of an investment.

In fact, this type of investment is now very much mainstream. Increasingly, the question is not why use ESG but why not use it – both from the perspective of managing the risks to investment performance and in terms of social conscience. In addition, the Covid-19 pandemic has only served to increase scrutiny of companies on responsible business matters.

Myth 3: It doesn’t make much difference to society or the environment Socially responsible investing is one way we can all make a difference. Most businesses are now aware there is increasing emphasis on transparency and high standards that go beyond the traditional financial variables that investors have historically focussed on.

Ultimately, this affects the extent to which they can attract capital and the rates at which they can borrow, so they have a vested interest in improving.

The more people that invest responsibly the greater pressure there is on companies to improve, helping drive the pace of change.

Backing companies that address solutions to global issues such as carbon emissions or waste can help combat these problems. Meanwhile, avoiding the worst offenders can make it more difficult for these businesses to raise capital, meaning it’s more difficult for them to undertake new projects or to expand, which should help influence future direction and policies.

Myth 4: It costs more If you buy organic produce at your local supermarket it tends to cost a bit more than regular items, often because there are not the same economies of scale.

This doesn’t necessarily apply to socially responsible funds, though. Although integrating ESG factors into an investment process can take a bit more work, the cost is broadly similar to equivalent funds without an explicit ESG policy. An exception is funds investing in more specialist areas or according to certain themes, which can be more expensive.

Myth 5: There is not much choice In the past, the range of socially responsible funds available wasn’t particularly appealing. The original ethical funds developed in the 1980s applied simple ‘screening’ to a universe of shares in order to exclude certain sectors and activities. There wasn’t much choice and the level of talent and resource dedicated to the area was more limited. Nowadays there is increasing quality and breadth.

Driving this trend is greater demand owing to the growing public consciousness on issues such as climate change, plastic pollution and social inequality.

Fund managers are starting to emphasise the ESG elements of their processes across many funds and as it becomes more and more mainstream I believe this can only increase.

As with any area of investing I would always advocate speaking with an independent adviser before making any decisions. Well I would say that, wouldn’t I?

The Garden July is often the hottest month of the year, but if it is anything like the rest of this year we could expect anything.

When you get the opportunity to sit out and enjoy your garden, do so!

Keep your plants looking good by dead-heading regularly; those blooms should then just keep coming. Brighten up your borders with some new plants but make sure you keep them well watered. On the subject of watering it really is essential at this time of year, use grey water where you can and leave watering until it is a little cooler of an evening.

Keep mowing the lawns regularly, in hot weather set the mower at a slightly higher level than normal this may prevent the lawn drying in very hot weather. July would be the last time to apply a liquid summer lawn fertiliser, especially if you missed giving it a Spring feed.

You will need to look out for Aphids, Mildew and Caterpillars and treat them fast before they cause too much damage.
