HELLO THERE. Hi, I am Chesney De Bondt, a 24 year old Product Designer located in Antwerp, Belgium. I am passionate about design and consumer electronics.

HACONN During my ten week internship at Studio Dos Santos I had the opportunity to work on a spin-off brand from Radiatherm. Haconn is a premium radiator valve designed to fit everyone’s tastebuds. Customization options are widely available in premium materials.

DESIGN BRIEF

To design a premium radiator valve, that suits the Radiatherm radiators was one of the projects I had the opportunity to work on during my internship. Customizability is an important factor in this design as well as complying with excisting components.

A series of sketches was made to determine the direction of the design.

CONTROL Haconn is a thermostatic valve, meaning that it will only heat your room when the temperature is not at ideal temperature. Haconn will help to keep your electric bills low, while adding an extra touch to your living space.

CUSTOMIZATION Haconn offers a multitude of color options. The basic range offers a one colour look while the more premium options use a dual colour option with high quality materials such as aluminium, copper, gold or silver plated. Haconn can be customized to fit your specific needs.

TELRAAM Telraam offers a smart solution that counts the number of passerbys on a daily basis. The task on hand was to design an easy to use mounting option and improve user exeperience during the whole installation process.

QUICK DESIGNS

CONCEPTS

Originating from the ideation, five concepts were distilled. Two concepts are made particularly for short therm iterations, while three other concepts are aiming towards the near future, when a complete redesign is done of the excisting components.

TELRAAM

The futuristic telraam concept utilises a wireless connection to the Telraam HUB located near an outlet.

Easy adjustment can be made using the dial on the side. A suction cup offers the flexibility and durability for multiple usages. The rubber lenshood reduces reflections from the window and accomodates the multiple possible angles of the camera with its flexibility.

TOASTER Designing a toaster with the qualities, characteristics and design language of Volvo.

A premium feeling toaster design that is not afraid of trying to be bold. Elements from the interior can be recognized as well as the iconic taillights of the Volvo XC90.

ANALYSIS

To understand Volvo’s design language a thurough analysis was needed to discover the design characteristics and determine how a new design can fit in with the Volvo brand.

DESIGN LANGUAGE

Volvo represents quality in every form. From the sound of the door closing to the many safety features implemented.

REFLECTION

Certain aspects of the Volvo design language were implemented in the toaster design. The design is mainly based on the shape of the iconic Volvo Taillight in a modern redesign.

BY A project with a focus on bees. BY is a mural art piece that shows the user when and where bee activity is located surrounding the house. The interactive art work blends beautifully with the surroundings in a non disturbing manner and maintain the peaceful environment.

EXPLORATION

Following the design brief, first a quick design was performed to do a primary exploration. BY is designed together with Stijn Kok and Joost Sokeel. Since the beginning of the exploration small mock ups were made to determine the viability of the concept.

MOCK UP

From low fidelity prototyping to high quality functional prototypes. During this project we started early on with experimenting how to present this concept. First with cardboard to get a better understanding of the design and working principle of the metal ring to transfer touch capacity. In the end a functional 3D printed model was presented.

APP DESIGN

Compatible with BY’s design a learning experience app was created.

At the end of the day the user can learn about the little visitors that crossed his garden during the day. User tests were performed with the high fidelity prototype to understand the shortcomings of the design and the application.

BUILD UP

With a prototype in mind a fully 3D printable model was created.

BY’s pulsating HUBs are constructed by two seperate pieces. The bottom layer is attached to the motor and contains the excentric disk that causes the wobbling. The top piece is the tangible product that the consumer can use to navigate through the app. A metal ring transfers the capacitive touch through the screws to the three soft shell feet on the bottom. The HUBs are connected via elestic wires.
