There are many disparities that need our voice AND our vote. Mat thew 22:20-22 states, “They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Cae sar’s; and unto God the things that areInGod’s.”theory, this is what we should do but what happens when Caesar (the government) is doing some thing that goes against what one believes is correct? There are times throughout history that individuals or groups have stood up for their rights that were being violated.
It appears that our recent discus sions about the importance of each of us becoming Registered Voters and using our right to vote has been taken by some as an endorsement of a political party preference, as a necessity to voting. For the record, there is no constitutional require ment of a political party affiliation as a condition of voting. One only has to declare a party affiliation in states requiring such affiliation for voting Democratic or Republican in primary races. While the Democratic and Republican parties are dominant political entities, in the State of Cal ifornia there are more Independent registered voters than Republicans.
Those who are in office make pol icy, as we have seen with the remov al of ballot boxes, the elimination of Voting Precincts so as to make lines longer and to create more difficulty for voters, the passing of laws pro hibiting giving people in voting lines food or water while they wait to vote, and in some places the elimination of Sunday voting. When Charles Diggs, Jr. won election to Congress in Michigan’s 13th District in 1954, he launched nearly seven decades in which the city of Detroit had at least one Black member of Congress. That’s likely to change this year. Because of redistricting, Detroit no longer has majority-Black con gressional districts. And in the first prima ry election with newly drawn district lines, a Black candidate did not win the Demo cratic contest in the heavily Democratic 13th. That means the city is likely to lack Black representation in Congress for the first time in Redistrictingdecades.isrobbing Black candi dates and voters of years of hard fought for opportunities. Rayshard Brooks was the 27-year-old Black man shot and killed in an Atlanta Wendy’s parking lot af ter an altercation with police in June 2020, two weeks after the murder of George Floyd. I was more pained about the results of the investigation than I was sur prised. Like me, critical observers have come to expect decisions favoring police in cases involving Black men, and, increasingly, Black women. Despite assertions by law enforcement executives that there is a reformation in policing, evidence suggests that the reformation is principally administrative and has little consequence on the street.

I know that a lot of media coverage of this summer’s primaries has focused on one big question: will Trump-style, MAGA candidates win or lose? But there’s anoth er question that needs to be asked: how harmful are the impacts of redistricting on our communities in this year’s elec tions and those to come? The current reality dictates that we do not sit out any election. We need to resolutely register, educate, motivate and turn out voters. In every election. Every time.

For approximately 41 minutes of questioning, the encounter was civil and Mr. Brooks complied with the officers’ requests. It was only after he failed a breath alyzer test and was threatened with arrest for drunk driving that the encounter became hostile.
