HANNLIS

Cardie Oma Hannlis was featured in many a Cardie Newsletter and catazines over the years as she was such an amazing inspiration for cards as well as LIFE. More than a dozen designs were inspired by the 98-year-old force of nature! Each birthday, she received as many cards from cardies and our retail partners as she had candles on her cake. Sadly for us, we lost her the night of May 14th, 2022. But leave it to her to inspire this gorgeous new condolence card as part of her loving legacy. Here’s the story of how the new design titled The Cloud that Carried Hannlis came to be.

Having learned that Hannlis had entered home hospice, several friends and fellow H-fans and I sat for hours that night telling our favorite H-tales over dinner at the shore here on Miami Beach. We knew that, had Hannlis been with us, she would have been oohing and aahing over the amazing cloud formations; friend Marianne Meischeid and I both took the exact same shot around eight. Then, as we were leaving the beach about 10, the full moon had risen high and was breaking through the clouds in just one spot, shining down on the shimmering sea like from a big klieg light in the sky.

I said, “Look, Marianne, it’s like ‘Beam me up, Scotty!’ Maybe that’s what Hannlis will say tonight.” Marianne laughed her hearty laugh and said, “Maay Beee! We know that’s what she wants. She’s ready.” Then, looking to the sky, Marianne said quietly, “Please, beam her up, Scotty.” The next day we learned that, indeed, Hannlis’s spirit was finally free. As the daughter Hannlis never had, friend Naomi Patterson, reminded us when she gave us the sad news, “H never feared death. She feared not fully living life. It was time.”

At least a year ago, Contributing Cardie Sarah Ashley Posch had sent us the beautiful message for consideration.

When I read it again after H’s passing, I felt all our hearts were so full from having loved Hannlis that I quick went in search of an image to pair with that perfect message for this summer release. I looked and looked around photographers’ sites for just the right pic until, hmm, I thought to scroll back through those on my phone from that night when H went peacefully and painlessly to sleep with the angels. Of course the fullness of the cloud did it for me, climbing right up to the heavens, no less. The number of condolence cards we’ve received from cardies and retail partners who share our loss tells us just how much this amazing friend and mentor will be missed. Long live the amazing spirit of Cardie Oma Hannlis!

This past February, Mary emailed us after leaving an appointment with the yummy home furnishings store design a la mode in historic Suamico, WI. “Card Buyer Jessica Nuss proposes a Meanings of Life grief support card featuring pennies from heaven.”

Jess herself explained, “When I suddenly lost my dad, my mom told me the legend about pennies from heaven. She said that Dad would leave pennies around for me to see if I was ever feeling down or he wanted to let me know he was thinking of me.

“I have a jar at home just for these special coins and it is now so very full! It has been eight years and I still ‘find’ Dad’s pennies from heaven, just when I need them the most!”

LITTLE REMINDERS

She submitted the picture of little Grace just prior to the pandemic. “It was taken at the 4th of July parade held in Door County,” Mary explained. We loved the image but, given the subsequent social distancing, we all agreed the card should wait until the world was out and about again. Imagine how Grace, now three years older and three years parade-deprived, will tear into her cotton candy this summer!
