Wouldn’t you love to have been with amazing travel photographer David Lazar when he spotted the little band of brothers now playing their way across our cover? From his home base in Australia, David shared with us that it was three years ago, early morning on the coast of Vietnam, when he saw the kids on a sand dune. As he described, “With basic housing and toys being simple things such as the bike tires you see in this shot, they live life mostly outdoors, playing and enjoying the natural world.”

Knowing our Big Books are referenced again and again throughout the year, we choose cover photos that make us feel good every time we look at them.

We loved this one for its sense of calm, and how it shows us that we can each be in our own thoughts, yet together enjoy the simple promise of a new day.

Through the joys and challenges of 2020, let's remember that we can access this same sense of peace and promise any time just by quieting our minds and honoring our emotions (and how much easier that is to write than to do!) Inside each of us is a younger us wondering ~

As Cardthartic’s South Carolina Rep, it’s been gratifying to help Wild Birds Unlimited co-owners Abbie Pressley and Melanie Moore-Shaw offer cards their customers really love ... and help the mother/daughter team grow their business. The two had discovered Cardthartic on their own in July 2012 at the annual supplier show WBU hosts for its 340 store franchisees. Cardthartic loves to exhibit there, as we’ve found WBU owner/operators to be such nice, passionate, nature-loving folks. Melanie originally ordered just enough cards to fill a little 16-pocket counter spinner — half-dozens of 16 different designs — but could soon tell that offering a larger selection would increase sales.

In the years since, customer demand for Cardthartic has only continued to grow — some customers come to the store just to purchase the cards alone. We tried a 64-pocket floor spinner for awhile and, two years ago, Melanie agreed it was time for a 96. Promising to take the 64-pocket spinner back on my next visit, when I went to pick it up, Melanie asked if she could hold on to it instead, in the event they’d need it in the future.

As it turns out, with the 96-pocket spinner in place, this Wild Birds store really, really started selling cards! Melanie brought the 64-pocket out of storage and added corner pockets to it and the 96 both so, now — taking up just four-square feet of valuable retail space — her customers have the choice of 224 Cardthartic designs! And have I mentioned she also carries magnets? :)

One of my favorite cards is the Rocking Chair birthday because it’s perfect for the group of friends I went to church camp with. From 6th-12th grade, we were best friends — and then came college, weddings, kids. While I still sent them cards for birthdays and anniversaries, we had not seen each other for 25 years.

I wrote each of them about returning to the church camp for a little reunion, and they all thought it was a great idea. We had a wonderful time, and now get together every other year at a different location. One evening during the initial reunion, they all remarked that, if it hadn’t been for me keeping in touch with them all those years, the reunion would never have happened.

Especially in this day and time when people are feeling so disconnected and isolated, cards say, “Someone is thinking about me! I am special to that person.” It was very gratifying to recently hear from a friend, “I was having an awful time and walked out to the mailbox and there sat your card. I use a lot of sympathy cards because I am a trust and estate lawyer and so always looking at final moments, and giving comfort and solace and tissues.

It is a privilege to be able to do this – an honor really.

Generally, when I buy your cards, I don’t necessarily have anyone in mind … I have past experiences that will become future moments of need. Those needs are squarely in mind as I look through all you offer. Last week I bought many cards and, among them, was the Adirondack Loveseat with the words: “Some people are missed more than words can say.” So heartfelt …

That very card was face-up on my desk this morning when a client’s daughter walked into my office. She is successor trustee for her parents, a couple that I worked with over the years, a couple I loved though only knew through the work I did for them.

When the daughter told me that Mom had died on June 26th, I told her how sorry I was — I knew Mom had been ailing in memory, but Dad was taking good care of her. I asked about the funeral and how Dad was taking it after 70 years of marriage, and was told the funeral was very touching. “It was held on July 2nd,” she said, “and Dad died July 3rd.”

(Sharp intake of breath on my part.) “Dad just couldn’t live without Mom and, after her death, he just lost the air that he breathed.”

Wow … what does that say about the power of love?! That couple loved to the absolute fullest, and I wanted a way to let their children know that all of us saw that love and celebrated it. So it seemed meant for me to send them the Adirondack Loveseat, now empty but so recently full of life. In truth, it expressed my feelings far better than I possibly could have. He handed me a small bronze statue of an owl that he bought for a dime at the Salvation Army, where he always stopped on his way home from work. As I reached out to take it, he grabbed my hand and said, “This is for you, and I want you to put it somewhere in your bedroom so you will see it every night before you go to sleep. Louise Oxendale is Director of Gifts and Cards, and also serves as the company’s CFO. She proudly tells customers, “Oxendale is a true example of what ‘local’ means. We live here, shop here and are dedicated to these neighborhoods we call home.”

As part of meeting her customers’ needs, Louise ensures that the stores’ greeting card aisles are well-stocked. “We have such a variety of customers, that we really need to offer a variety of lines.

“Cards help our customers convey their feelings — love, humor, and joy — and those customers consistently tell us they’re grateful for the wonderful selection we carry.
